Product Description
This is a "must have" reference book for patients, parents, caregivers, and libraries with medical collections. This sourcebook is organized into three parts. Part I explores basic techniques to researching alpers' disease (e.g. finding guidelines on diagnosis, treatments, and prognosis), followed by a number of topics, including information on how to get in touch with organizations, associations, or other patient networks dedicated to alpers' disease. It also gives you sources of information that can help you find a doctor in your local area specializing in treating alpers' disease. Collectively, the material presented in Part I is a complete primer on basic research topics for patients with alpers' disease. Part II moves on to advanced research dedicated to alpers' disease. Part II is intended for those willing to invest many hours of hard work and study. It is here that we direct you to the latest scientific and applied research on alpers' disease. When possible, contact names, links via the Internet, and summaries are provided. In general, every attempt is made to recommend "free-to-use" options. Part III provides appendices of useful background reading for all patients with alpers' disease or related disorders. The appendices are dedicated to more pragmatic issues faced by many patients with alpers' disease. Accessing materials via medical libraries may be the only option for some readers, so a guide is provided for finding local medical libraries which are open to the public. Part III, therefore, focuses on advice that goes beyond the biological and scientific issues facing patients with alpers' disease. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized, Rambling
I know Yamada is considered good, but I just didn't like his style or this book.

Rambling, no pictures, just very dry & doesn't cut to the chase, so to speak.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Excellent book for both medicine and Gi specialty.
Wish to have an ebook version, such as Palm version.

Product Description
A Concise, Symptom-Based Textbook for Diagnosis and Decision Making in Clinical Practice

Over the past twenty years, thousands of physicians have come to depend on Yamada’s Textbook of Gastroenterology. Its encyclopaedic discussion of the basic science underlying gastrointestinal and liver diseases as well as the many diagnostic and therapeutic modalities available to the patients who suffer from them was—and still is—beyond compare. This new textbook, Principles of Clinical Gastroenterology, is designed to inform practitioners on the features of the major clinical disorders in gastroenterology and hepatology from the point of view of the clinician observing signs and symptoms of a patient under care and management.

It is a practical guide to diagnosis and decision making in clinical practice and provides a rich source of information on diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Covering the full range of examinations in gastroenterology and hepatology, with extremely timely chapters on patients with dyspepsia, eating disorders, jaundice, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and on screening, Principles of Clinical Gastroenterology gives you easy access to approaches that a clinician might take to common symptoms and signs presented by patients with such disorders. The chapters include the epidemiology, history, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of the most commonly encountered disorders in gastroenterology and hepatology.

This textbook will be an invaluable resource whether you are a gastroenterologist, internist, surgeon, or other clinician who sees patients with gastrointestinal and liver disorders. It should be kept close at hand for frequent consultation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Neurology by Bernard Jacob Alpers
The audience for this book is quite extensive. Medical students,
neurologists, general practitioners, internists, diagnosticians
and a whole host of medical people will benefit from the
rendition set forth by Dr. Alpers MD. He has an extensive
coverage of the cerebellar system, the motor system, electrical
reactions, disturbances of gait, cerebrospinal fluid, lesions of the motor neurons, pain symptomatology, peripheral nerve injury,
diseases of the spinal cord and the meninges, vascular diseases
of the brain, tumors and abscess, cranial trauma, epilepsy,
extrapyramidal diseases, multiple sclerosis, poisons and their
impact on the nervous system, endocrine disorders, the nuclear
amyotrophies, degenerative diseases (cerebellar degenerations),
brain and spinal cord disorders and diseases of the skull.
The work has full diagrams of the peripheral nerve distributions
of the upper and lower limbs. There is a pictorial representation
of electroencephalogram rhythms in the frontal, parietal and
occipital areas of the cortex. This section has a clear analysis
of the electrical potentials of the brain. Dr. Alpers MD
has an instructive section on permanent cure for trigeminal
neuralgia.

"Permanent cure of the pain in trigeminal neuralgia is offered
by operation. Section of the sensory root adjacent to the pons
has many advocates and in skilled hands is extremely safe.
Partial section of the root is performed.... Relief lasts from
6-12 months. Injection of the Gasserian ganglion is advised by
some in preference to operation."

The author has a classic description of ankylosing spondylitis.
He describes the etiology, pathology, symptoms, diagnosis,
prognosis and treatment for the disease together with the
related diseases- Marie-Strumpell, Bechterew versions of the
same disease type. A preview of the author's description
follows together with some classic quotations:

"The diagnosis is made without difficulty, the stiff spine

and back pain being quite distinctive in the early stages and
the root pains later... TREATMENT:Adequate physical mental
rest and a high vitamin diet are important. Warm climates are
better than cold. Salicylates help keep the patient comfortable and if used should be employed generously. Anemia is sometimes
present and should be treated with iron. Vaccines are of doubtful value. Infected foci should be removed. Local heat
is extremely important, as infrared, and gives great comfort.

Paravertebral injections or rhizotomy may be necessary
for the relief of pain. X-ray treatment offers real help and
should always be used."

The author depicts classic cerebellar degenerations; such as,
Olivopontocerebellar atrophy,Parenchymatous atrophy and
Primary Degeneration of the Corpus Callosum (Marchiafava's Disease).

This book has a wealth of information on neurology. The work
is titled "Clinical Neurology".It is depicted in an easy-to-
read form with many illustrations and both major and minor
variations of numerous disease processes, classifications,
sub-classications and genres. ... Read more
