Excerpt: Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Portuguese pronunciation: ; born 27 October 1945), known popularly as Lula is the thirty-fifth and current President of Brazil. A founding member of the Workers' Party (PT - Partido dos Trabalhadores), he ran for President three times unsuccessfully, first in the 1989 election. Lula achieved victory in 2002, and was inaugurated as President on 1 January 2003. In the 2006 election he was re-elected, extending his term as President until 1 January 2011. Luiz Inácio da Silva was born on 27 October 1945 in Caetés (then a district of Garanhuns), located 155 miles (250 km) from Recife, capital of Pernambuco, a Brazilian state. He was the seventh of eight children of Aristides Inácio da Silva and Eurídice Ferreira de Melo. Two weeks after Lula's birth, his father moved to Santos with Valdomira Ferreira de Góis, a cousin of Eurídice. In December, 1952, when Lula was only seven years old, his mother decided to migrate to São Paulo with her children to rejoin her husband. After a journey of thirteen days in a pau-de-arara (the open cargo area of a truck), they arrived in Guarujá and discovered that Aristides had formed a second family with Valdomira. Aristides' two families lived in the same house for some time, but they didn't get along very well, and four years later, Eurídice moved with her children to a small room in the back area of a bar in the city of São Paulo. After that, Lula rarely saw his father, who became an alcoholic and died in 1978. Lula was married twice. In 1969 he married Maria de Lourdes, who died of hepatitis in 1971, when she was pregnant with their first son, who also died. Lula and Miriam...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=99328 ... Read more

Excerpt: Frames is the third studio album by British alternative rock band Oceansize, released on October 1, 2007 on Superball Music. The album marks the first appearance of bassist Steven Hodson, following the departure of Jon Ellis in 2005. In May 2008, the band re-released the album with an accompanying DVD, featuring a full performance of the album, a documentary focusing on the making of the album, and various live tracks. The package also includes an Oceansize sticker. The band played the album in full on October 18, 2008 in Manchester as part of a trilogy of shows that celebrated the band's ten year anniversary. Vocalist/guitarist Mike Vennart states that: Lead singer, Mike Vennart, notes that the title: evokes strength and structure, and kind of a sense of time as well every second is like a frame of your life thats ticking away and then its gone. You can try and remember to try and look at it. But youll probably only remember it as a snapshot, you wont remember the whole movement of the thing. Mike Vennart states that "Commemorative ____ T-Shirt" - originally entitled "Commemorative 9/11 T-Shirt" - doesn't have "anything to do with 9/11. I was sold a t-shirt by the singer of the Cardiacs. On the label it read 'For ages 9-11', and when he sold it to me he said "oh, here's one of our commemorative 9/11 teeshirts," so I got thinking about what sort of person would wear a 9/11 teeshirt. Someone who's not really looking to the future. The ink drawings, featured in the album's artwork, are by Nine Inch Nails and Guns N' Roses guitarist Robin Finc...http://booksllc.net/?id=12488420 ... Excerpt: Paul Wittgenstein (November 5, 1887 March 3, 1961) was an Austrian-born concert pianist, who became known for his ability to play with just his left hand, after he lost his right arm during the First World War. He devised novel techniques, including pedal and hand-movement combinations, that allowed him to play chords previously regarded as impossible for a five-fingered pianist. He commissioned several pieces for the left hand from prominent composers, including Richard Strauss, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Paul Hindemith, Sergei Prokofiev, Maurice Ravel and, later, Benjamin Britten. He was the older brother of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. Wittgenstein was born in Vienna to the industrialist Karl Wittgenstein. His brother Ludwig was born two years later. The household was frequently visited by prominent cultural figures, among them the composers Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler, Josef Labor and Richard Strauss, with whom the young Paul played duets. His grandmother, Fanny Wittgenstein, was a distant cousin of the violinist Joseph Joachim, whom she adopted and took to Leipzig to study with Felix Mendelssohn. He studied with Malvine Bree and later with a much better known figure, the Polish virtuoso Theodor Leschetizky. He made his public debut in 1913 and some favourable reviews were written about him. The following year, however, World War I broke out, and he was called up for military service. He was shot in the elbow and captured by the Russians during an assault on Poland, and his right arm had to be amputated. During his recovery in a prisoner-of-war camp in Omsk in Siberia, he resolved to continue his career using only his left hand...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=88961 ... Read more

Excerpt: Alessandro "Alex" Zanardi (born October 23, 1966) is an Italian racing driver. He won two CART championship titles in North America during the late 1990s. He also had a less successful career as a Formula One driver. More recently, he has attracted widespread praise for his return to competition in the aftermath of a crash in 2001 that resulted in the amputation of his legs. He returned to racing less than two years after the accident, competing in the FIA World Touring Car Championship for BMW Team Italy-Spain between 2003 and 2009. Alex Zanardi was born in Bologna, Italy and moved with his family to the village of Castel Maggiore on the outskirts of the city when he was four. His sister was a promising swimmer until her death in an automobile collision. Zanardi began racing karts at the age of 13. In 1988, he joined the Italian Formula 3 series, becoming a championship contender by 1990. In 1991, he moved up to the Formula 3000 series with the Il Barone Rampante team, who were themselves newcomers to the series. Winning on his F3000 debut, he went on to score two more wins that season, en route to second in the championship. By the end of 1991 he had commenced his career in Formula One. Excerpt: Maharana Sangram Singh (commonly known as Rana Sanga) (April 12, 1484 March 17, 1527) was the ruler of Mewar state, a region lying within the present-day Indian state of Rajasthan, a desert region, between 1509 and 1527. He was a scion of the Sisodia clan of Suryavanshi Rajputs. He became king after slaying all his brothers and who stood up against the invaders and was able to unite many Rajput states to fight against the foreigners. He was a Rajput in a true sense, a valiant fighter and a king who is legendary for his chivalry and generosity. He lost the battle to Babur due to a traitor but his gallantry inspired many others. Rana Sanga succeeded his father Rana Raimal as the king of the Mewar in 1509. He defended his kingdom bravely from repeated invasions from the Muslim rulers of Delhi, Gujarat and Malwa. He was the most powerful of the Hindu kings of that time. During his rule, Mewar touched the pinnacle of prosperity and as an exemplary king he protected and developed his empire. He was a man with indomitable spirit and despite losing one arm, one eye and numerous other grave injuries he carried on with great valor. His chivalry was reflected when he treated Sultan Mahmud of Mandu with generosity and restored his kingdom even when he was defeated and taken as a prisoner by Rana. Sanga had to face a new and powerful invader in the Moghul Babur, a descendant of Timur the Turk. In 1526 Babar invaded India and defeated Ibrahim Lodhi, Sultan of Delhi. In the face of this threat the Rajput clans united under Rana Sanga in a Rajput confederacy but the superior artillery of the Moghul prevailed against the cavalry charges of the Rajputs.
