Product Description

The potential for creating and using biological weapons to wreak havoc is an urgent concern not just in America, but worldwide. In fact, many security experts believe that the next act of widespread terrorism will likely come from a weapon of biochemical means.

In Anthrax: Bioterror as Fact and Fantasy, Philipp Sarasin explores the real threats of biological weapons--in contrast to the idea of biological substances as nebulous agents of terror--by analyzing the famous anthrax scares that occurred in the United States in 2001. Basing his analysis on government documents and media coverage between the events of September 11, 2001, and the beginning of the Iraq War in March 2003, he shows that the anthrax letters became the necessary fantasy-link between the 9/11 attacks and Saddam Hussein's "weapons of mass destruction." While many bioterrorism experts agree that it would be difficult to use anthrax effectively as a weapon in a large-scale attack, the anthrax scares that occurred in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks amplified the American public's fear and uncertainty about what might come next. In effect, these incidents infected the American psyche and created an increased sense of vulnerability that shaped the public's understanding of the War on Terror.

Sarasin, in offering a European's view of the U.S. reaction to the anthrax scare, argues that while threats of bioterrorism are real, they are disproportionate to the fantasmal fears and illusions that now permeate American politics and culture. In short, fear of bioterror has contaminated modern American life.

Product Description

This book uses the 2001 anthrax attacks as its point of departure for an analysis of the past, present, and future of America's preparedness to deal with major challenges to public health, including bioterrorism and pandemic flu. The study identified the strength and weaknesses of the system while making recommendations for improvements. This allows the U.S. to be better prepared if faced with a larger or different biological threat. This book looks for linkages not only between bioterrorists and pandemic defenses, but also between public health security and the wider field of homeland security. Johnstone highlights some key foundation plans and strategies that are to serve as a basis for public health security. Failure to address these crucial issues not only creates unfounded mandates but also inhibits priority setting, leadership, and accountablity.

Bioterror: Anthrax, Influenza, and the Future of Public Health Security utilizes a large number of sources from within both the public health and public policy communities to document how each sector responded to the anthrax attacks and re-emergent infectious diseases, and how those responses have evolved to the present day, As with other areas of homeland security, sustained progress in public health security is not likely until basic questions about funding priorities and leadership are successfully addressed. In the response to the only mass casualty event in the United States since 2001, Hurricane Katrina, and in various emergency simulation exercises such as TOPOFF series, major performance deficiencies have been observed. This book brings together a variety of sources, the best available evidence on the status of the public health security system at three distinct points: before 2001; during and immediately after the anthrax attacks; and in the period from 2004 to the present.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bioterror Review
I had a research paper to write on Anthrax and this book was a very useful resource. It was very helpful and seemed the information was current with the other resources I used.

5-0 out of 5 stars we still do not know the truth about the anthrax attacks
The more truth we learn about the anthrax attacks and the failed FBI investigation, the more we will be disgusted with the continuing failure to solve a case of mass murder that terrorized America.

I have posted a link to Bioterror on my author blog (caseclosedbylewweinstein), which has become a forum for many who doubt the FBI has solved the anthrax case and some who agree with the FBI's conclusions.

Sometimes fiction can be as powerful a means of informing and influencing as non-fiction.

I deal with the failed FBI investigation of the 2001 anthrax attack in my novel Case Closed, revealing stunning abuses of power at the highest levels of government.

Does my novel tell what actually happened? Of course not. It's a novel!

But many readers, including one well place source in the Intelligence Community, have told me my story of conspiracy and murder is, unfortunately, "all too plausible." ... Read more

Product Description
In the late 19th century deadly diseases such as tuberculosis and anthrax were unstoppable killers. Doctors were helpless to prevent or effectively treat their patients because nobody knew what caused the disease in the first place. It wasn’t until German scientist Robert Koch showed anthrax and other scourges were caused by specific types of bacteria that mankind began to win the war on disease. In addition to being a renowned researcher, Koch was also an important technical innovator. He was the first to develop an effective system for staining and photographing the microbes he studied under the microscope, the first to establish a scientific protocol to isolate and identify pathogens, and the first to use agar as a medium to grow bacterial cultures in the lab. Koch’s lifelong dedication to eradicating disease earned him the 1905 Nobel Prize for Medicine and ensured his legacy as the founder of modern bacteriology. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best of Anthrax (Recorded Guitar Version)
As with most Hal Leonard Recorded Guitar Versions, this one is no exception in terms of accuracy. Goodclean tabs, fingerings, chord inversions. This book is especially helpful when it comes to figuring out the guitar leads. On some of the older Anthrax recordings, Dan Spitz would multi-track or use a harmonizer on some parts of his leads. This made transcribing certain parts very difficult because of the layered guitar harmonies. One further note. As with all transcriptions, you must listen to the recording to pick up all of the little guitar nuances. My only gripe with this book is the song selection. In my opinion some songs included should have never made this book, while others should have been i.e. Time, In my World, etc... ... Read more

Product Description

Biological warfare has, unfortunately, in the post 9/11 world become a significant topic of discussion in both the medical and lay presses. In the wake of the biological "letter bombs" containing anthrax spores, the possibility of biologic and/or toxic attacks on civilians in any part of the world became no longer a possibility. It is now part of common discussion and consciousness.

This book presents the history of the topics and clinically relevant discussions on those high risk (Category A) diseases beyond anthrax as well as a number of infections and toxins at the Category B level. Importantly, in addition, the text includes sections on Public Health Infrastructure, Public Health Law, Surveillance, Mental Health Management and Media Role all of which relate to epidemics of any sort, not just intentional biological events.

Beyond Anthrax: The Weaponization of Infectious Diseases is a product that should serve as a reference point for clinicians, epidemiologists and public health personnel to understand in practical detail many of the aspects of weapons of biowarfare as well as the appropriate responses to them.

Product Description
Living Under The Patriot Act: Educating A Society details the monumental struggle to bring the most powerful law in the war on terror since September 11, 2001 to fruition. The combatants included Republicans and Democrats from the 108th Congress and the "Coalition of Opposition" which emerged during the 109th Congress. The highly controversial Coalition's efforts threatened the renewal of the Patriot Act far beyond what the general public has been told. Living Under The Patriot Act: Educating A Society also includes the platforms and perceptions of individuals, as well as special interest groups, on many sides of the Patriot Act argument. These special interest groups range from groups as diverse as the ACLU to the Gun Owners of America. This book will appeal to all readers who are concerned about terrorism and the future of America. With this in mind, Living Under The Patriot Act: Educating A Society was written for the average everyday American, as well as the academic. In fact, due to ambiguous nature of the Patriot Act's construction, coupled with the growing threat of terrorism, the need for a comprehensive book on this law has never been greater. Regardless of where you stand on the Patriot Act debate, readers of this book will benefit from a superior knowledge which will strengthen any discussion on this unique law. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Information
Book is a non-biased book looking at the Patriot Act. Gives all sides of the for and against about the law. Book is very good for doing research.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Diamond - The Rise of America
Paul Ibbetson has written "Living Under The Patriot Act: Educating A Society" in a very clear manner which those of us who do not have a formal background in law can understand. I believe that the American people needs topay much more attention to the Patriot Act and the possibility of it misuse in the near future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This book is very informative. The author does not take a stance on right or wrong but rather presents the act in a clear and concise way that is understandable.Definitely worth the read if you want to know what is going on in our world today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Info for those new to the Patriot Act
I thought this book was inviting from the start. My favorite aspect of this book is that it covers the basics right at the beginning so if you are new to the patriot act or governmental issues in general then you won't get lost. It's good for beginners!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review, from Alan Caruba, bookviews.com
Shortly after 9-11 in 2001, a bill was introduced in Congress and passed despite the fact that most members had not even had an opportunity to read it. It is popularly known as the Patriot Act. In his new book, Living Under The Patriot Act: Educating a Society ($17.99, Author House, available from Amazon.com), Paul A. Ibbetson, a former police chief currently studying for his PhD in sociology, shares his three years of research on what he calls "one of the most powerful laws of modern day." Those of both liberal and conservative political orientation have expressed serious concerns because, while it expands the government's ability to find and jail terrorists, it also portends the possibility of its misuse by a government less attentive to the dictates of the Constitution. The FBI admitted to such abuses just last month. The author's purpose, as the title notes, is to educate the reader to the various aspects of the bill, from its passage to its current status. The bill is due for reauthorization and this timely book permits for a thorough review of the way it works. This is not light reading because it rather intensively looks at the bill section by section. Nor is the book a polemic taking sides. Those of a legal bent of mind will find it a masterful piece of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars i owe my aches and pains tothe anthrax club
So here we have it a book i have waited for ,for years... and yes we want a movie.... i didnt want this book to end just as the same as the venue...not much to say if you were there buy this book, and if not get a history lesson in my opinion of the best venue ever to have existed....better than cbs in my opinion...

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for any Underground Music Fan!
Amazing documentation of Connecticut's most known underground music club! The owners lay out the conception behind the venue from initial thought to opening day and everything in between. I attended the Norwalk, CT location regularly and knew many of the people involved with the club and the book taught me things I was not aware of at the time. Includes insight and stories from many of the club's attendees, staff, club owners and the bands that graced the stage. As well as tons of recently unpublished photos and a complete gig-ography of EVERY show from day one until the last night! I highly recommend this book to any and all fans of underground DIY music, Hardcore, Punk, Crossover, and Indie Rock! This book is a flashback to the 1980's when it truly was DIY or DIE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Growing up in the Eighties
The Anthrax wasn't part of my childhood, nor did I ever hear of it -- but the book interested me because of the music of that era and a friend of mine wrote it.While I was listening to the mainstream stuff like the Psychedelic Furs, and Softcell, Chris and company were listening to the underground music with much more punch and excitement. But what really hit home in the book, was what an entire generation of Connecticut kids contented themselves with in their leisure time.Their parents knew where they were and what they were doing and the bulk of the kids were NOT getting in trouble.I hope the book inspires someone to make a "scene" for today's kids to hangout, grow-up, and remember the good ole' days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everybody's Scene: The Story of Connecticut's Anthrax Club
Excellent read, feels like I'm back in the parking lot again in Norwalk.
The book has amazing photos i have never scene before.
Lots of fun to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars mind awakening
i found this book to be fascinating.while i always agreed the government and its agencies have always "covered" their actions, this book really makes you stop and think that there could be another answer to the anthrax killings.it happens every day; how many people do you read about that are in prison for a crime they did not commit?how many times do they remain in prison so that the governing agency saves face?

this book made you think and leaves you with the thought that perhaps someone else could really have been accountable for this horrendous crime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author's real world role in furthering public understanding

Weinstein has provided us with fast-paced beach reading.Separately, through his website, hehas played a key role in promoting public efforts to understand the Amerithrax investigation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too Believable
Case Closed
My biggest problem with CASE CLOSED is it is too believable. I would not be at all disappointed if Lewis Weinstein's fictionalized novel about the FBI's anthrax investigation turned out to be more truth than fiction. This predisposition sometimes would get in my way while reading, and I would have to remind myself that "this is just a novel."

Lew's 144-page story is a quick read. In July 2008 a physician employee of the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases dies. The FBI immediately not only declares the death a suicide, but also announces that the doctor had been their prime suspect in the 2001 anthrax murders by mail. "I don't @#$%ing think so!" says the director of the nation's Defense intelligence Agency (DIA) and a covert investigation of the FBI itself begins.

The trail leads to where some of us always thought it would lead -- but it's best to let you follow the discoveries yourself. It is a well-written, well-developed investigation.

It has been interesting to follow Mr. Weinstein's modern promotional techniques. His blogs and utilization of online resources other have been inspirational for authors looking for unique ways in which to get the word out regarding their writing.

If one follows Mr. Weinstein's blog, it becomes clear that the CASE is far from CLOSED for a number of his readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Couragous Novel- A must read for political junkies
This is not just a good book, but an important one.

In the forward, author Lew Weinstien admits that he bacame obsessed with the FBI's stunningly abrupt conclusion to the nearly 7 year old Anthrax investigation in 2008 wherein the alleged perpetrator Bruce Ivins was posthumously tried in the court of public opinion by the FBI and found guilty. Weinstein knew there were demons embedded in this story, and they haunted him. For weeks he could not rest until he'd put pen to paper in a cathartic purge. This novel is the result.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I'll admit, that I had much the same reaction to the FBI announcement that spring. So moved was I that I did my own research and concluded beyond any reasonable doubt that Bruce Ivins was murdered by powerful forces that had strong political motives. Author Weinstein does a terriffic job telling this fictionalized account of an inter agency post-mortem investigation of the (real) failed FBI investigation. Yes, make no mistake this is fiction, and the names have been changed to prevent law suits, but the conclusion the author reaches is exactly the one I reached last year after exhaustive research. Ivins, it turns out, is just the tip of a very menacing real-world iceberg.
Any American who came to mistrust the ambitions of the previous administration, and feared that our constitution was being undermined by overzelous ideological politicians who had a cosy relationship with "the dark side" will find this book intellectually stimulating, and perhaps even vindicating, as I did.I reccomend you buy it, read it, and pass it on to someone who will benefit from a deeper understanding of the dangers posed by authoritarian politicians, who are, even as I write this, champing at the bit for their chance to regain power. It's that important.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Truth Be Known
Case Closed provides a solid background of the 2001 anthrax case which could not have been attained through the news media. It was concise and informative and offered credibility to the events which in my opinion could have very likely occurred. A well-known scientist accused of this hideous crime seven years after his death when the case is still unsolved and no other person brought forward, is a crime in itself. ... Read more
