Book Description
Since its first edition in 1990, The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook has sold more than 600,000 copies. Its engaging exercises and worksheets have helped millions of readers make real progress in overcoming problems with anxiety and phobic disorders. The Authoritative Guide to Self-Help Resources in Mental Health (Norcross, et al., 2003) gave the book its highest rating and praised it as "a highly regarded and widely known resource." Thousands of mental health and medical professionals recommend this book to their clients and patients every year. Simply put, it is the single finest source of self-help information on its topic available anywhere.

The text of this fourth edition has been fully revised and expanded and includes two new chapters: a discussion of physical conditions that can aggravate anxiety and an overview of the use of mindfulness practice in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and some forms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. As in previous editions, the book offers the most up-to-date information on medications, natural supplements, and complementary strategies that can alleviate anxiety symptoms. The sections on relaxation, nutrition, and exercise have all been updated and broadened. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
This is an incredible resource with anyone dealing with anxiety. The workbook covers the likly causes of anxiety, provides numerous coping techniques and excercises and discusses new various treatments availible.

The workbook is easy to read and written with compassion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive; however use caution re: meds
This book provides an excellent and comprehensive look at anxiety disorders. The worksheets are helpful, and there are many specific coping strategies outlined in detail, enabling the reader to implement them. This book provides a road map to work through anxieties and find a more rewarding life. I would advise, however, to read the information on medications (which is a small part of the book) with caution. Valium (Diazepam) should not be used for more than 4 weeks or dependency results. A family member who was incorrectly diagnosed and put on Valium for one year has been off work for three months as she tapers off this substance. The withdrawal has been a very difficult road. I recommend focusing on all the other techniques covered in this book to deal with anxiety.

4-0 out of 5 stars understanding
Have to give anyone an A+ for using this book, taking action, understanding and resolving their problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful reading
This workbook on anxiety and phobias helps to shed light on several disorders in an easy to read book.I felt I was getting an in depth look at not just my own concerns, but the concerns of other patients and therapists. The book not only presents the reader with the basic need-to-know scientific knowledge but goes beyond that to give the reader options for self-help.It helped me to realize I was not alone and living with anxiety did not mean an end to living life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freeing Your Child From Anxiety
this book is very informational and organized well.i like that you can just go to the sections you are interested in.they also have very good techniques for the kids (and adults) to try.highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book!
I really enjoyed this book.It was very user friendly, and showed how to help your child, by giving you the appropriate language to use to explain feelings of anxiety/fear and how to take charge of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars sleep problems
my daughter has not slept n her bed alone for 8 years. she was always scared of the dark. We have tried everything and nothing worked. I bought the book and taught her the how to handle things using the books ideas and she now has slept in her bed all night allnight by herself for 1 month. The book is wonderful and can imply to all types of anxiety problems and is a great book for parents. Praise God for this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Freedom
Any parent who has the unfortunate circumstance to pick-up this book and learn how to cope with their child's anxiety will find it very informative and helpful.More importantly it will help your family down the road towards freedom.Freedom for your child to understand their feelings of anxiety and begin to relax and enjoy their childhood experiences. Freedom is also attainable for the parents, and other siblings, to have more productive days without dealing with the amazing stress of altering daily actives to meet the needs of your anxious child.

Dr. Chansky does a great job at explaining anxiety in simple terms that a parent can use to help explain to the child and re-assure him/her that the problem is not their fault. There are practical steps outlined that helps the child understand the differences between "good" thoughts and "anxious" thoughts.Dr. Chansky then breaks down different anxieties that are most common in children and provides exercises for the parents to break the anxieties down and build a foundation to change the child's thinking patterns that lead to the anxiety.

While the book is laid out in a very easy to follow format, and devotes sections to your child's particular problems, I think the book should be combined with some professional help depending on the severity of your child's issues. It is a great tool to be used when working with your child to begin removing anxious thoughts, but as a non-professional I found certain exercise (although very helpful) opened the door to larger discussions that I was less prepared to help with.

A good book that will prepare parents and children towards successful freedom

5-0 out of 5 stars Grateful
Best help yet for dealing with our son's anxiety. It was like learning another language and I use the dialogue daily.Especially for a parent who does not have an anxiety issue, it really helped me to understand what a struggle it is to be in a state of constant worry and how to quit saying "there's nothing to worry about".For this book I will be eternally grateful as it is helping to change our son's life back into what a nine year life should be; birhtday parties, sleepovers and play dates, not hanging out with mom worried about the next separartion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you are committed to curing yourself get this workbook...
Hi.
I've suffered on and off from acute generalized anxiety and panic attacks for the last 7 years.

After 4 weeks of following this workbook I am now feeling better than I have for quite some time and am making definite confident inroads into a freeing myself from this debilitating condition.

Let me first point out that this is NOT a "magic pill" (I've searched years for such and they don't exist). This workbook will take time and effort on your part. The end result however will be a life free of anxiety and panic and a trail back to feeling, thinking and acting "normal" again.

This workbook is much more simple to understand and follow compared to other CBT books I've read (and there are many). The steps are very easy to follow and the principles have been reduced down to their bare elements which I found helped enormously when dealing with issues amid panic andanxiety. Most importantly though, through constant practice and "homework" it en grains the thinking and ultimately bends our irrational beliefs/fears back to where they should be. Normal!

I've been following the program through with a psychologist who practices CBT and have found this beneficial. That said though, I'm also of the firm belief that it's been 90% my own work which has made the difference so if you aren't able to afford or have problems seeing someone I'm still convinced this workbook will work wonders for you.

In short this is a fantastic workbook which has changed life for me and will for you if you have the guts to make a commitment, accept some changes and start living again to your full potential.

If I can so can you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver!
This book was just what our family needed. My seven year old couldn't get enough of it. We saw a difference almost immediately. It helped her gain control of what she thought were impossible situations. We still re-read the book as needed. She was diagnosed with OCD recently, but because of the book, she already had a firm foundation for fighting her "worry bullies", and responded dramatically to therapy. I would recommend this book forall kids - from the ones that have just run of the mill anxieties to sudden on-set anxiety caused by a traumatic change to kids that have serious anxiety related disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for kids with anxiety
This is a terrific book -- I use it with my 6-year-old, who really engages with it.It addresses the origins of worries & strategies for controlling worries, all in a very kid-approachable way. Each chapter ends with a space for the child to draw a picture of something related to his/her worries. The book has helped me talk more concretely and openly with my child about worrying.

5-0 out of 5 stars worry
I used this book with my 8 year old. It was simple enough so that he could follow along while I read yet specific enough so that he could relate and get a sense that he was not alone in being anxious and how to go about feeling better. It had enough humor to keep a child interested yet not so much humor that the child felt like his worries were being made fun of. It helped me to learn new ways to help my child when he was worried. Before I would say that things would be ok. That didn't help. With new tools, I can help him calm down and build skills he can use for the rest of his life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book was recommended by our guidance counselor at school...it was a great book to read together with my 7 year old, who recently began worrying excessively! The book was interesting enough to him that some nights he requested to read a chapter to "see what was next" in managing his worries! We still look back when the worries get too big, to see what is recommended. What a great resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for helping your anxious child understand him/herself
This is an excellent little book that I bought for my oldest child, who really seems to get carried away with his worries and anxieties. He was diagnosed with ASD when he was 3, and, while greatly improved, still has some residual issues, worries and anxieties being some of them. This book has helped him so much, in part because he believes me now that OTHER kids worry too, not just him, and in part because it provides good strategies for dealing with worries.

When I have trouble with anxieties, rather than fight off negative thoughts, I kind of visualize them entering my mind, where I drop them on a leaf in a river and they float off into the distance.I tried to teach this to my son, but it wasn't particularly effective for him.

The ideas in the book worked much better with him.The idea of being strong against your worries, of treating them like a bully and defending yourself against them, is actually quite empowering. The idea that HE gives his worries power by tending them, like a tomato plant, makes him feel stronger each time he chooses NOT to spend time on a worry.

Anyway, I am so glad I came across this book, because it, in conjunction with a wave CD I purchased, has really reduced his anxiety about falling asleep. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Huge help to my daughter with OCD
My daughter (now 12) was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive disorder at age 9.Given that OCD is an anxiety-type disorder, and my daughter had always had fears and anxieties around certain things, I bought this book.We found it even more helpful than the OCD-specifcbooks.The etiology of anxiety and OCD are similar, and this book helps the child evoke the power of their own though process.By becoming the "boss" of their thoughts, they can reduce the power of their anxieties/obsessions.Basically, it takes the foundation of cognitive-behavior therapy and puts it into a kid-friendly context.Read the opening "Letter to Kids with Anxiety" to your kid. That's what I did, and she was hooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I can attest first-hand that the authors' methods of dealing with situational or specific anxiety in children works. My oldest son, now 14, had many fears, including thunderstorms and severe separation anxiety. We tried traditional "talk" therapy for many years with several different therapists, with no success. We finally found a cognitive therapist who was able to work with him with great success. My middle son has recently been in therapy with Elizabeth Spencer to handle anxiety about sleeping away from home, a problem he continued to have despite talk therapy with three different therapists.Elizabeth was able to get to the meat of my son's anxiety, help him understand why his brain was reacting the way it was, and what to do to overcome it.I'm please to report we had our last appointment today, and my son has had a summer of successful sleepovers and a week-long vacation, all without any anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must read for Parents helping their child deal with Anxiet
I have read many books on anxiety as I have a 12 year old who has suffered with Anxiety for years. This book was by far the most useful, and well thought out. It gives you detailed information on what causes anxiety. It also gives you lots of infomation on the different solutions: When to seek professional help, what different medicines do. It includes specific tips to help your child. The use of the Dragon (Your Anxieties) and the Wizard (the smart guy that can help you overcome them)helped explain in my son's terms the feelings he as been having. Its like the light bulb went off for him. The journal keeping has been a huge help to him as he tackles his dragon. This book is a must have for parents of children suffering from Anxiety.

Anxiety happens. It's not a choice. And attempts to "manage" your thoughts or "get rid" of worry, fear, and panic can leave you feeling frustrated and powerless. This book will get you started, using a revolutionary new approach called acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT.

The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Anxiety has one purpose: to help you live better, more fully, more richly. 2-0 out of 5 stars Too much hype and one serious printing error
Let's start with the printing error (page 6):
"Each audio exercise comes in female - and - male voice versions. Choose the version that works best for you".

There is NO male version. And this is a problem because I find the female voice to lack authenticity. I contacted Harbinger about this and they claim it's a printing error. A product that lacks a promised feature is worse than a printing error.

The material is solid enough. As a follower (client and professional) of psychodynamic psychotherapy, I'm open to alternative approaches to healing, and this workbook does provide practical approaches to human suffering as well as living a "life of quality". However the constant "poo poo'ing" of past methods to control/soothe anxiety/worry/fears grows tiring. Worse, their grandiose claims that their workbook will provide "the answer" is a claim refuted by clinical practice.

In the end, all self-help books provide a kernel of truth towards "living well". It's a shame the CBT folks are exhibiting the same arrogance that psychoanalytic practitioners did 15-20 years ago. Alas, my clinical experience supports the notion that most folks benefit from practical tools (this workbook) AND insight (psychodynamic psychotherapy). To ignore one or the other is to practice an inferior therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT JUST FOR ANXIOUS FOLKS!
First off, I usually hate workbooks. I can't stand to pay money for a bunch of pages filled with lines that I'm supposed to fill in, as if I am writing the book myself. THIS BOOK IS NOT LIKE THAT AT ALL. It's brief but thorough, with great ideas on every page. It takes you by the hand and explains in detail, but does it in a way that you don't feel talked down to.

Second, about half the people out there touting acceptance these days don't have any idea what they're talking about. There are a bunch of psychobabblers who go to one Steve Hayes workshop and think that since they read some Zen twenty years ago they know the whole ACT paradigm. John and Georg are really immersed in this work, and it shows up in the gentle way that they explain the key concepts. The subtle way they frame examples also shows their deep understanding of what this framework is all about. Because they understand it so well, the exercises flow from the central themes, so you can see how they build to an understanding ofemotion. Readers will find themselves more forgiving of themselves and their own feelings. It's not a bunch of cognitive hoop-jumping that you see from other books that don't really understand this paradigm. Instead, you finish with the sense that this is really a way of life.

Last, you don't have to be anxious to benefit from reading this book! Much as I would love to pretend that I picked it up just to help clients and supervisees, I get wound up and freaked out like the next person. This book helps me identify moments of willingness, however brief and infrequent, and gets me to cultivate mindfulness throughout the day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Effective for anxious individuals
I am a psychologist specializing in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety. I found this to be a highly effective program for my anxious teens and adults. For many, it is life changing, liberating, and results in a level of peace they have not accessed before. I especially welcomed alternative ways of addressing and conceptualizing anxiety. I have found the approaches and philosophies outlined in this program to be well-received by patients. It is a great stand-alone program but is also a great adjunct to more traditional CBT approaches. The book is well written and easy to read, the illustrations are powerful, and the CD allows forms to be printed and contains excellent guided meditation exercises. What a great addition to the field of workbooks for anxious individuals! ... Read more

It's conscise, but offers practical suggestions. It dosent really go into depth with any one topic, but gives enough information so you can have something to work with.

2-0 out of 5 stars This Book is really "Old School"
I've been an anxiety sufferer for a few years now.I've had PTSD (from active combat in the army), OCD and panic attacks.Bournes two books (this book and his workbook) help manage the anxiety, but don't fix it.This book may be good for a psychologists repeat business, but is little use for a person who suffers from anxiety.Bourne was the leader in anxiety related problems about ten years ago, but hasn't moved on with the new discoveries that have been made. For my anxiety problems I found The Linden Method or Panic Away method to be greatly superior.Neither of these concepts are even covered in this book, so I would not recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Common sense information for a good price
Very common sense approach to dealing with anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bridge to recovery
I've danced around with generalized anxiety disorder and panic attacks off and on for several years. So, I've read many, many books. After my symptoms restarted recently, I found this book. This is a great book to read after you understand the various mental and physical sources and symptoms of anxiety disorders.
This book helps you put your knowledge to use and create your own healing program.
It's simple, yet comprehensive, covering diet problems that can exacerbate anxiety, thinking patterns that cause anxiety and relaxation techniques to use when you're experiencing anxiety or when you're just taking relaxing time for long-term healing. But, you still have to decide which techniques will work for you and use them every day. This gives you many options in a simple, straightforward format.

Much of anxiety therapy is designed as quick, focused intervention, treating a specific syndrome without looking at the possibility of long- term healing. However, true recovery requires something more: understanding the meaning of anxiety symptoms and going deeper to face their underlying sources in a holistic and life-changing way. Beyond Anxiety and Phobia provides an array of alternative strategies for entering this long-term healing mode; describes alternative therapies such as herbs, yoga, massage, acupuncture, and homeopathy; and addresses the impact of perfectionism and other personality issues. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Anxiety and Phobia: A Step-by-Step Guide to Lifetime Recovery
Goes along with the workbook by the same author. It is easy to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps learn about yourself and others
I never look to books to give me the ultimate answer. If I learn something from it and can apply it in some way to my life, and if it's writen well enough to keep me interested, it's worth it.This book was very good that way, at least for someone who likes philosopical/psychological stuff.

I've been diagnosed with a general anxiety disorder, and had a bout of depression last year.A very good therapist recommended this to me.In fact, she said that I HAD TO buy it. I did, and learned a lot about various types and triggers for anxiety. The more I learn about it, the easier for me to deal with it.It became a familiar, known side of me, and when I can separate the rest of me from it and look at it, and study it, it becomes less and less relevant.Which is what we all want, right?

And, it helped me understand other types of psychological issues.I don't suffer from all of those, thankfully, but it is sure interesting to learn how those work.Anyway, it's a good read. Enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not sure
This sems like it could be a great help for someone suffering with anxiety, however it can also be very overwhelming. It is definately not a quick fix. This is more like a study guide, kinda like taking a class. If you need immediate help, I suggest seeing a professional as apposed to buying this book. If you have plenty of time on your hands and your anxiety os already under control, then this book can be helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Anxiety and Phobia: A Step-by-Step Guide to Lifetime Recovery
This book was very helpful. My psychologist recommended it to help with my counsleing treatment. The author breaks things down for you and makes you realize many things that you can do to live a better, healthier life. It has truly changed my life for the better! I would recommend this to anyone who has anxiety, phobias, even stress. ... Read more

Book Description

A bold new view of anxiety from an unerringly smart and funny writer who has suffered from it her whole life.

The millions of Americans who silently cope with anxiety at last have a witty, articulate champion in Patricia Pearson, who shows that the anxious are hardly “nervous nellies” with “weak characters” who just need medicine and a pat on the head. Instead, Pearson questions what it is about twenty-first century American culture that is making people anxious, and offers some surprising answers—as well as some inspiring solutions based on her own fierce battle to drive the beast away.

Drawing on personal episodes of incapacitating dread as a vivid, often hilarious guide to her quest to understand this most ancient of human emotions, Pearson delves into the history and geography of anxiety. Why are North Americans so much more likely to suffer than Latin Americans? Why did Darwin treat hypochondria with sprays from a hose? Why have we forgotten the insights of some of our greatest philosophers, theologians, and psychologists in favor of prescribing addictive drugs? In this blend of fascinating reportage and poignant memoir, Pearson ends with her struggle to withdraw from antidepressants and to find more self-aware and philosophically grounded ways to strengthen the soul.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cognitive thinking
This is the first Cognitive thinking book I've read I found it very helpful and it really works. You have to do your part. You can't JUST read it. Its very interesting book too. If you'd like to just become more self-aware. There are other reasons why people seem rude or what not.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful
This book can be used toghether with therapy (I recommend Dr Richards selp help series that you can buy on line). The book does not teach you how to change your negative thinking, it only teaches you how to create a hierachy for social situations to work with. It is only helpful if combined with other books/therapies.

2-0 out of 5 stars this book is so self explanatory
This book was really a waste of time. When I was done reading, I was no better off than when I started. The beginning is really interesting in that it describes what kind of feelings go on inside the mind of a shy person. I thought I was the only one in the world who felt these things, and it was interesting to see them expressed by someone else in a book. So I continued to read on to the parts where they tell you how to get better. It said to try stuff like writing in a journal every day and to "think positive", "be assertive", and "practice making small talk". Like I didn't consider that on my own! This book really did not need to be written. What they could have done was just take the beginning of the book and sell it on its own as a short story or something, since it is the only useful or interesting part. After the first part of the book, it's basically telling you to go see a psychiatrist or get medication or both. It starts to get repetitive and is basically filled with the same useless suggestions that any person could have thought of, but they keep re-wording them throughout the book. So save yourself some money and don't buy this book. If you're interested in reading the opening part of the book, see if you can find it in a library.

3-0 out of 5 stars I had social anxiety, now completely cured with these books
I was trying to think of a way to help everyone out there who has been dealing with the same feelings that I have been.I have tried everything that people recommend for social anxiety, many exposures, going to programs, numerous therapists. If I had known even two months ago that today I would feel at ease in many situations I never would have believed it.The two books that will change you noticably and permanently are both "Feeling Good", and "Psycho-cybernetics".I had tried everything out there I could get my hands on, and then these two books were a godsend. After a week into "Feeling Good" you will actually start feeling like the person you want to be, and a month into it you will feel SO much better.I recommend that after that go directly into "Psycho-Cybernetics".The introduction says that he thought his book would never sell because nobody would believe his claims that he can give you the personality you want through visualization, and I thought it was hype. Then after doing it for a few days I was amazed.I have only used this book a week, and am already very much better. You dont need the therapists, drugs, alcohol or the bible to feel better, just get these two books, be committed to them.Give them a month, and if you change half as much as I have you will be very glad you did.You dont need to sit inside worried, these books will make you the person you want to be. ... Book Description
Anyone who’s ever lost sleep over an unreturned phone call or the neighbor’s Lexus had better read Alain de Botton’s irresistibly clear-headed new book, immediately. For in its pages, a master explicator of our civilization and its discontents turns his attention to the insatiable quest for status, a quest that has less to do with material comfort than with love. To demonstrate his thesis, de Botton ranges through Western history and thought from St. Augustineto Andrew Carnegie and Machiavelli to Anthony Robbins.

Whether it’s assessing the class-consciousness of Christianity or the convulsions of consumer capitalism, dueling or home-furnishing, Status Anxiety is infallibly entertaining. And when it examines the virtues of informed misanthropy, art appreciation, or walking a lobster on a leash, it is not only wise but helpful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars two different audio versions
My mother enjoyed Alain de Botton's book Status Anxiety on cd, read by the author- so she suggested I listen to it on a road trip I took recently. So I did, and I liked it well enough, but found the author's voice very cool and uninteresting, inflectionless. I was surprised, looking at the label of the cd to find that it was abridged, so I bought a copy of the book at a local bookshop and there was so much in it that was not on the cd, not to mention all the pictures (of course). This abridged cd version left out the entire section on Humor, for one thing, and many interesting details- I have not had time to comb through and discover how many.
I got her the audio book because she cannot read anymore, because of her bad eyesight. Now I see there is a new, unabridged version- what a pity that she had to listen to the abridged one instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good way of avoiding misery
Status Anxiety sets out to use philosophy, art, history and economics to describe and understand what drives us to seek status and why we become envious of the success of those around us. This book is not a philosophy text and, like Alain's other books, is written in an easy to read style and tackles the question in an interesting and thoughtful way.

The book is written in two parts, with the first covering the causes of status anxiety, which Alain De Botton sets out as being lovelessness, snobbery, expectation, meritocracy and dependence. In each case he sets out to explore what is the driver of each form of status anxiety, delving into numerous historical examples to explain his case.

The second section of the book details what he believes could be solutions of the afore mentioned problems. These solutions include and examination of status within philosophy, art, politics, Christianity and Bohemia culture and concludes that while each of these groups did not do away with status, they attempted to remould what status was. This therefore allows those who do not quite fit into what their generation's idea of status is, to comfortably find their place in society and to have status somewhere within society.

Alain writes in an easy to read style and fills his books with interesting and appropriate pictures, diagrams and draws on a wide variety of sources to make his point. Thought easy to read, each chapter has, none the less, a depth to each discussion and are in no way intellectually floppy.

While this book is not in anyway a philosophy text book, the ideas it raises and the thoughts it generates are complex in their nature and Alain has used many non-philosophical arguments and examples to back up his case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Satire
Status Anxiety as coined by Alain de Botton, is probably one of the most important aspects of modern western life, as it is propably one of the greatest causes for unhappiness in us modern supermarket folk.

His book dives deep into this issue, and shows how the lack of Status Anxiety can bring one much more happiness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Status Anxiety
The author provides a wide breath of historical and cultural information. The book is an invaluable resource for anyone who is not caught up in the pursuit of high status. The tone is straight forward and sympathetic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Anti-capitalist and PC, but good history lesson
One reviewer mentioned that the book is good for people who want to write a paper, and I would agree wholeheartedly. The book gives you a good overview of the concept and history of status anxiety from a historical perspective, and this makes the book worth reading (particularly the first half). However, I was disappointed with the shallowness and lack of insight into the psychology of status anxiety. I was also thoroughly disgusted in a few places by the author's politically correct language and themes as well as his obvious dislike for capitalism. It is also correct that the second half of the book is far less valuable; his solution to the problem of envy (the core of status anxiety) is basically to eliminate the things people are envious of (such as luxury items, or the types of economic incentives that are naturally available to industrious people in free-market capitalism)--instead of getting to the root of what psychologically causes envy in the first place. The author acknowledges the fact that culture has the greatest impact on the level of envy in society but believes that economic freedom and industrial development naturally create these cultural conditions. I believe that instead, a society is more prone to envy when its moral fabric has corroded--a condition not necessarily related to that society's economic system. Culture of Narcissism by Lasch is a much deeper analysis which comes to this conclusion (although Lasch himself may not have been a poster child for capitalism either). However, if you can look past the problems I have indicated and you have an unbiased, independent mind (or, for that matter, you love reading anti-capitalist, anti-white male propaganda and you don't think enough of that exists already) and would like to know more about the history of status anxiety, you will find the book valuable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I love the dummies series.Despite thier name they are typically a well written, well researched and balanced resource. The authors of this one included a comprehensive look at anxiety with a wide variety of interventions to suit many people.Helpful without being dry or preachy, it's great for clinician and self-helper alike.A must-have for your bookshelf if you work with people with anxiety or have anxiety yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference book for suffers and those who loves him/her
This is NOT a self-help Book. If you want a Self-Help Book, do your research and buy one. This book is a REFERENCE book about anxiety disorder. and is a GOOD ONE~!

3-0 out of 5 stars If you have anxiety...
If you have anxiety, 360 pages of info is overwhelming. Usually anxiety is not that complicated. Start with something simple that gets right to the point of reducing your anxiety (I did the program at selftherapy.org and loved it). Then if you want to become an expert, read a book like this.. highly informational, but not all that practical.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized
Abolsutely one of the worst self-help books I have read. There isn't any structure, and it's not simplistic. The advice given is helpful but the authors then reverse the whole deal. Its like one chapter says this will be helpful, and then another chapter says it wont. It just goes all over the place and you cant really follow what the authors are trying to get at.

A book I highly reccemend for anxiety and depressive related disorders is "Feel the fear and do it anyway" Much more simplistic, easier to read and get thru. And much more cheerful.

I also dont like that these authors have seperated anxiety and depression from one another. I guess they do have a new book coming out that combines them both. It will be interesting to see if they have learned anything from their last two failures.

But for someone that wants quick and easy advice, this book is certainly not for them. I'm afraid that this book of jargon will make it more confusing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars medication is not your only treatment option
When I was diagnosed with anxiety, the psychiatrist led me to believe that my only treatment options were medication and therapy. For various reasons, I was strongly opposed to the idea of medication so before taking his advice, I decided to get on amazon and find some books that might offer some other alternatives.

This book has definitely been the MOST HELPFUL for me. The book is divided into chapters based on different approaches - such as Nutrition, Herbs, Alternative treatments. What I really like is the fact that the author provides dozens of different treatment options and explains them in a way that you can kind of pick and choose what you think will work best for you.

When I got this book I was almost entirely overwhelmed by anxiety and depression.I dreaded leaving my apartment or making phone calls, and I often spent days on the couch, drinking virtually every night. My school work severely suffered, and I felt like a complete failure at life. After a couple months of suffering, I ended up starting acupuncture treatment (one of the methods suggested in this book), and I have made an amazing recovery. As well, I have been taking several supplements, and I have been working to improve my sleeping and eating habits. But the best part is that I have been able to gain control over my anxiety WITHOUT the use of prescription drugs!

If you are feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, I would STRONGLY recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holistic Help for those with Anxiety
Living Well with Anxiety is a concise, well written book that offers easy to follow ways to deal with anxiety using a combination of traditional and complementary health interventions. The addition of complementary self-help interventions makes this book different from most books on anxiety and includes information on nutrition, exercise, herbs, environmental factors, stress reduction, and relationship aspects as they influence anxiety. The comprehensive section on resources includes related websites, audio- cassettes and CD's, and brief outlines of relevant literature. This book should be valuable to anyone who experiences anxiety, and wants a better understanding of the condition. It provides a wide range of interventions that will be useful to anyone who wants to assume more responsibility for their own care.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a keeper
Many people will find Carolyn Chambers Clark's book to be an indispensable support. If you've been accumulating a shelf of books on the subject, Living Well with Anxiety is the keeper; it's a comprehensive guide to every angle of approach.
The book is in part a tool for exploring cause and effect; Clark writes that some lucky individuals, for instance, may find their symptoms alleviated by addressing environmental factors that may not have occurred to them (such as indoor pollutants) or even by changing a prescription they've taken for granted (perhaps an oral contraceptive).

For some, her pg. 87, #5 strategy for quitting smoking alone will be worth the cover price!

For those tormented by more complex issues, Clark discusses the connection between muscle tension and heartbeat, adrenaline and exercise, relaxation and breathing. She cautions against looking for a miracle in a pill bottle, but holds out the hope that it is possible to discover the source of any condition and, armed with that knowledge, to create a treatment program based on what the sufferer knows, or comes to know, to be true about himself.

Self-healers will find a plethora of practical anxiety-reducing measures with which to experiment.

There are also valuable sections on psychiatric drugs and on the variety of professional practitioners and treatments available.

The advice here will be perfect for those who already have a good support system of family and friends, a good job, and decent health care; these people will gather confidence from the author's firsthand knowledge as a professional in the field who has herself struggled to overcome the paralyzing symptoms of anxiety. They can easily apply everything they learn to their own situations.

Those in less favorable circumstances may be put off by some of the suggestions involving, for instance, time management skills, and calling meetings. But, skipping those items, they will find much of substance remains.

Likewise the references to a "Higher Power (or God)" and a "life's purpose" will annoy many people; but the chapter which covers the benefits and dangers of spiritual belief also contains much food for thought about interpersonal relationships, including strategies for dealing with the sorts of people whose attitudes cause stress in their associates.

The author's voice will please most of her readers; in every authoritative statement there is also a sense of empathetic camaraderie.

Whether you're reading on your own account, or on someone else's behalf, you'll findClark's optimism contagious, because it's genuine--the author, with full knowledge of the realities involved, promises that in time you CAN learn to control your anxiety; you can even make your sensitivity work FOR you. With fifteen pages of further resources at the back of the book, this is the volume to get you started, keep you motivated, and help you get there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read this!
In her introduction, Clark states: Anxiety conditions are the No. 1 mental health problem among American women and are second only to alcohol and drug abuse among men.... Frequency of anxiety is also increasing in children."

Wow! That's scary, considering that 10 percent of our population suffers from anxiety--and only a small proportion receive treatment.

Living Well With Anxiety is in three parts:

1. Anxiety and Medical Treatment: Included is cause and effect; self-diagnosis; types; and your brain and medication.
2. Holistic Approaches: Includes nutrition, herbs, environmental changes and exercise.
3. Creating Your Anxiety Plan: Includes finding the right practitioner.

With many drugs having disturbing side affects, traditional medicine's approach may not be enough. Only the symptoms are treated. You may never learn the source--and fear of the unknown being one of the worst kinds of anxiety.

If it has to do with feelings of anxiety, Clark has it in her book. Food that affects your body's chemistry is explained. Antidepressants and their side affects are detailed, including the abuse of anti-anxiety drugs.

If you have anxiety or panic attacks or live with someone who does, this book clearly explains so many concerns and what to do about them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium relieved my anxiety as described in this review
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

I've studied and read a lot about worrying/anxiety, but had never before thought of some of the ideas in this book.....they were very, very helpful to me in my battle against anxiety.

This book is amazing... I feel like it was written for me. I highly recommend it, whether you have anxiety or are trying to understand someone who does. I even gave it to several people as gifts. A friend suggested that I read it, and said it is the best book on the subject. I agree!

5-0 out of 5 stars I no longer feel guilty for having anxiety
I suffer from depression and anxiety. Like most Christians, I kept this problem to myself and acted as if everything was OK. That was until I crashed and became so full of anxiety and fear that I could no longer function in normal daily life. I could not sleep, could barely eat and could no longer take care of my kids or go to work. Thank God that my pastor counselled me and told me that it was OK to take medication. We went through some intense counseling to get at the root of my fear. It turns out that I have a lot of abandonment issues from childhood that I had never dealt with. However, I could not have gone through that painful self-analysis and healing of past hurts if I had not been on medication. Plus, I needed to get back to work and get my kids back. Even on medication, I am still dealing with daily anxiety. When I picked up Dr. Hart's book, I could hardly put it down. He is right when he says that Christians suffer needlessly from anxiety disorders because "worry" is viewed as a sin. However, he goes through scripture and shows how the bible is talking about normal worry and "what if's". When the bible was written, people didn't suffer from anxiety disorders. Life was about the pace of a camel and today people are living at the speed of a jet plane. Anxiety disorders are a recent phenomenom that has resulted from the great stress that has been placed on our lives. We need to get rid of a lot of this stress and this book tells you how. Dr. Hart believes that counseling and medication work together. A person can't make difficult life changes if they're always on the verge of a panic attack and can barely function. Medication is a temporary solution to get your "happy hormones" back in balance while you make changes in your life. I no longer feel guilty for taking Xanax. He even has a whole chapter on how to get off Xanax without going through major anxiety. God Bless Dr. Hart! I finally have hope that I can be healed of this anxiety.

1-0 out of 5 stars THANKS FOR THE WARNINGS!
This "review" is to thank the others who've read and reviewed the book.If "Arch" recommends medications for anxiety, then his title has no credibility. Most medications for anxiety are highly addictive, and the one or two that aren't, don't really work very well. But most importantly, these pills AREN'T CURES for anxiety. They're TREATMENTS.When you stop the pills the anxiety comes right back. And as for the Christian perspective -- don't get me started. All I can say is thanks for the warnings! ...
