Product Description
Anxiety-Free Kids offers parents strategies that help children become happy and worry free, methods that relieve a child’s excessive anxieties and phobias, and tools for fostering interaction and family-oriented solutions. Using a unique companion approach that offers two books in one—a practical, reader-friendly book for parents and a fun workbook for kids—this solutions-oriented guide utilizes the cognitive-behavioral approach to therapy by integrating the parent in the child’s self-help process.

Research has shown that if left untreated, children with anxiety disorders are at higher risk to perform poorly in school, to have less developed social skills, and to be more vulnerable to substance abuse. The author employs cognitive-behavioral therapy, the most empirically supported treatment of anxiety disorders, along with a family approach to build a supportive team to help kids with anxiety successfully overcome their worries.

Covering the six most commonly occurring anxiety disorders in childhood—generalized anxiety, separation anxiety, specific phobias, social phobias, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder—this book gives kids and their parents successful strategies for achieving relaxation, conquering worries, challenging faulty thinking patterns, developing positive self-talk, and facing one’s fears. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Anxiety Book for Parents and Kids Both!
Dr. Bonnie Zucker is one of the brightest young therapists I know. Her book reflects this fact. It is a "must have" for parents as well as for therapists treating anxiety, and the principles of CBT are useful for adults as well. This book will open communication between parent and child and fortify children as they face the challenges of growing up.

It is clearly written, encouraging, and will calm parents and assure them they are on the right track using this approach. Especially important since anxious children make anxious parents even more anxious and need a way to break the cycle.

5-0 out of 5 stars A parent's guide to dealing with their child's anxieties and phobias
Anxiety does not have to be a constant state. "Anxiety-Free Kids: An Interactive Guide for Parents and Children" is a parent's guide to dealing with their child's anxieties and phobias, so that they can face them now before they develop into lifelong problems. Doubling as an advice guide for parents and an activity book for younger readers in dealing with their fears, "Anxiety-Free Kids" is a unique approach to childhood phobia, highly recommended.

Product Description

Learning to deal with anxiety is an important step in a child's healthy emotional growth. Conquering fears, and not avoiding them, is the lesson imparted in this story. David could not stop thinking about the basket he had missed at the end of the big game. He was worried that he might do it again. He was worried that his team mates would be angry with him. He was worried that his parents would not be proud of him. He was also worried about an upcoming math test. In fact, David was worried a lot. "Should I quit the team?" he asked himself. "Should I be sick tomorrow and miss the math test?" Luckily, David finally confided in his parents and school nurse, both of whom gave him support and techniques for controlling the "worry beast" within him. Delightfully illustrated, it focuses on a very real and essential topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I was concerned this book might be a little long and involved for a newly six year old. It's not a quick read, like "Is a worry worrying you" (also good), but it works. My daughter asks me to read it to her and she really enjoys it.The concepts are presented gently and appropriately, and are well-received.It also opens the door for further discussions. All good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book, Fabulous Man
This book has been an incredible awakening to something I've battled with most of my life: depression and anxiety. What Dr. Joe teaches you is so simple but so profound in dismantling the mystery that is depression and anxiety. His basic premise is that insecurity hits you with doubts, fears, and negatives. You try to control these doubts, fears, and negatives with a vast array of strategies like avoidance, anger, etc.Eventually these strategies wear you down and you get hit with anxiety and/or depression. These, however, are just habits. Insecurity comes from a lack of trust in ourselves and the world. This lack of trust could have come from numerous factors but that's in the past.On top of this, Dr. Joe gives you many real-life examples that really brings things to light.I got his book in 2007 and have been reading it every day.He also maintains a website: [...] and answers questions, including mine. The man has over 30 years experience and a PHD.Highly recommend the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for anyone who is struggling.
An excellent resource for anyone who is suffering depression or anxiety. As someone who has personally struggled with the grip of depression and anxiety for a number or years I would highly recommend it. It really does open your eyes to a lot of things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-Coaching
A very important self-help tool for self-navigation of self as a part of community. Luciani presents to us, in a simple format, a very complex and potentially self-debilitating life struggle of being a healthy self-skeptic.

5-0 out of 5 stars You CAN coach yourself from anxiety and depression
I just ordered this book and was so eager to read it that I upgraded so I could read it online.I have not read the whole book but have read some chapters and skimmed others.

One major fact the author points out is that depression and anxiety are habitual reactions to habitual ways of thinking. He does explain the difference between the two and how those suffering from each are different from one another.

The author is extremely convincing, so I am sure that if a person persists in following the author's coaching, there will be immense improvement. Even if you are depressed and feel you have little energy, buy the book and ask an acquaintance to help you train.

Much of the technique he is basing his ideas on is called Cognitive Behavior Therapy, (CBT).One of CBT's major in-depth proponents is Davis Burns, M.D. whose books "Feeling Good," and "The Feeling Good Handbook" are very popular. Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy Revised and Updated The Feeling Good Handbook Burns' books are more hefty and are daunting.

HOWEVER this book very quickly and directly gets to the heart of matters, and his concept of self COACHING really is easy to grasp. He goes from convincing the reader to showing the difference between depression and anxiety and to the coaching techniques. He does not want to fool anyone into thinking it is easy or instant, but compares the program to athletic training using a coach.

I highly recommend this book for sufferers and persons caring about sufferers of depression and anxiety.Even the caring persons can coach themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a fascinating book!
Do you wanna know why you feel depressed?

Do you wanna know where all the crazy ideas are being formed in your brain?

Do you know what part of your brain is responsible for certain feelings?

Do you know how to self diagnose your own depression?

This book is all scientific, factual yet still easy to understand. I self-diagnosed myself, I have been on Zoloft and I kind of think my doctor did not prescribe me the right medication according to this book but overall, its all about understanding the game our brains playing against us when it comes to depression and anxiety. Once you understand whats going on in YOUR brain. it is easier to deal with that. GREAT book! a Must read to understand depression/anxiety in depth and change your thinking patterns according to your own depression style.

3-0 out of 5 stars wrote a song about it, wanna hear it?Here it go
This book constantly points to seeking professional help and/or evaluation ... brain scans and whatnot.I thought the book was going to be something along the lines of self-help.NOT.Unless you want the book for research and/or academic purposes, save the dough for a `head shrinker fund'.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wrongly Marketed Product
The information it provides is great for Psychiatrists and professionals, but not for regular people. In no way does it teach to hear anxiety or depression, it only talks about it and how it relates to MRI and other imaging results. This product isn't for the "people" in any way.

However, true recovery requires something more: understanding the meaning of anxiety symptoms and going deeper to face their underlying sources in a holistic and life-changing way. Beyond Anxiety and Phobia provides an array of alternative strategies for entering this long-term healing mode; describes alternative therapies such as herbs, yoga, massage, acupuncture, and homeopathy; and addresses the impact of perfectionism and other personality issues. ... Nice book that breaks things down well. It is like a school text book and not a self help read. Give you some other good books to read. If you have mild anxiety I would rec it. Also has a lot of good natural ways to help with anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I , along with his Doctors, am assisting my Husband in overcoming his Anxiety and Panic Disorders. This book has been a blessing for us both.He is getting a first hand look at how his environment and nutrition play a huge part in his recovery.

Since we began following the guidelines in the book, he has had significantly less episodes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A compassionate, comprehensive book on anxiety
This is a wonderful book. It doesn't provide a quick fix for anxiety, but if you are willing (and desperate enough) to take the time to think through the issues raised and try some of the technique suggested, it can be life-changing.

The author shares his clients' and his own personal experiences in a compassionate, caring way, and I found that healing in itself.
The assumption is that all of us who are dealing with anxiety have a hard time accepting and loving ourselves just as we are. Dr. Bourne provides some powerful tools to start doing just that.

The chapters I found most useful and/or thought-provoking were those onmeditation and spirituality, but the whole book is great.
Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly "Beyond Anxiety and Phobia..."
This book is aptly titled, as it truly goes beyond the typical anxiety management techniques. There are many lifestyle and philosophical approaches offered for consideration. The author freely shares his personal experiences and how he himself was helped by these ways. A very good book, even for anyone without anxiety disorders. Kate

Product Description
A former anxiety sufferer shows you how to overcome your anxiety problems

Do you have a tremendous fear of public speaking, flying, or other social situations? Do you live in fear of having another panic attack? Do you depend on antidepressants, alcohol, or other medications to calm you down or help you sleep? If so, you're not alone. Tens of millions of Americans are affected by anxiety disorders and many more worldwide. I personally struggled for five years with extreme social anxiety and panic attacks, constantly battling my own scary and seemingly uncontrollable thoughts.

I finally found the path to freedom from excessive worry, medication, and fear. I have overcome these problems and now live my life with a greater sense of inner peace and calmness. I'm not a medical doctor, psychiatrist, or therapist of any sort. I am simply a normal guy whose life was once overrun with constant worry, fear, and depression. With great determination, research, and trial and error, I have returned to a healthy state of wholeness and optimism.

My book details many of the problems I encountered daily, struggles that anyone suffering from anxiety can certainly relate to. I expand in detail upon my journey towards personal freedom, the valuable lessons I learned along the way, and how to apply them to your own life. I discuss why I had several severe relapses with my progress, and how you can avoid the same pitfalls.

Book highlights include:

Education - Explanations of what anxiety is, and how it affects your body and mind.
Strategy - How to formulate a plan to overcome your own fears and self-created limitations.
Techniques - Discussions of the various physical and mental techniques I found most helpful in my recovery and still practice today, including meditation.
Inspiration - I show you how to gain a sense of urgency and inspiration to change your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Solutions to a Real Problem
The author does an excellent job illustrating a problem that everyone has to some degree, but never discusses.Whether you are struggling through the hardest of times that the author describes so vividly or just need help controlling daily things that stress you out, the author provides a steady dose of hope (with lots of humor) that you will find a way to manage the anxiety and live a happy, fulfilling life. The very personal experiences the author shares provide a solid base for all of the tips and advice on how to control the anxiety because you know he has experienced it and overcome it.The advice in this book would benefit anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honesty about Anxiety and Hope!
Brutal honesty revealed in specific examples no one else would dare to share, validating we are not alone dealing with anxiety. The various modalities given are a breath of fresh air and are simple to try- experience one or try them all to see what works best for you. It's nice to be given all these choices. This book gives so much hope that anxiety can be beat without medication. It is a must read for all anxiety sufferers, no matter what level you suffer. The suffering can end!

3-0 out of 5 stars Book has some helpful tips/advice, but I disagree with medication viewpoint
I thought this book had some great tips and advice for overcoming anxiety and fears. It also helped me see life in a more positive way.The problem I had was the negative view of medication.I just don't want people to read the book and think medication is not an alternative. One of the problems the author had was he mixed alcohol and SSRI antidepressants/anxiety medication. You cannot mix these 2 drugs! The SSRI's medication will not be effective! It also sounds like the author had an alcohol problem which can cause anxiety too.His first panic attack came after he drank heavily the night before and was badly hungover and dehydrated the next day(pages 3-4).
I personally completely stopped drinking alcohol and also take anxiety medication that has done wonders for my life.My Doctor says he thinks my biggest change is due to not drinking alcohol.Anyhow, just wanted to mention that.I do carry around the list of 10 things from this book (page 152) in my wallet along with another list from a book called "The Easy Way to Stop Drinking".Find your right combination. But you have to cut out the alcohol if you take medication or want to improve your life.I also have cut back on my medication with no side effects or issue.I plan to cut out completely soon. Thanks and Good Luck to all.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Will Put You in Touch with Your Inner Warrior Again.
It's hard to write all the ways this book has comforted me in one small review. I started experiencing panic attacks during a very stressful and unhealthy time in my life -- like so many others. Before panic, I felt like I could go anywhere and do anything. I couldn't name one thing I was afraid of if I tried. But anxiety made me utterly lost, and for many days, I was a shaky, nervous, and total wreck. This book's cover alone told me two things that I needed to be told so badly throughout my darkest times: I'm not crazy, and there is hope. (Look at all these reviews! Obviously, you are not alone.) I found hope after all; this book helped lead me to it. The author's revealing encounters with anxiety were told with such honesty and humility that I found myself sometimes laughing and other times crying while reading. Pavalanis is brutally honest in detail about his experiences and speaks straight from his heart. He isn't a doctor throwing around medical terms in a patronizing tone because he has seen a patient or two with anxiety issues. He's been there. He walked through the darkness, and he'll walk you through it, too. I highly, highly, highly recommend this read for anyone suffering from anxiety. And I thank the author right from my heart for being so awesome to share his story with all of us!

5-0 out of 5 stars So candid!
The author was completely forthcoming with his problems with anxiety. I, on the other hand, have always been a bit embarrassed to tell people about mine. This book has served as an inspiration. The second half of the book speaks a lot about different practical techniques the author has used to combat his problems, and it sounds like he is pretty much over it.So if you purchase this book, you'll read a first-hand account of someone who had anxiety problems to a very severe degree, and what he did to cure himself. If nothing else, you'll see that you are not alone. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Anxiety and AS
Easy to read and informative. This is a good buy if you suffer from these two conditions.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Handy Little Guide.
I've never been diagnosed with any sort of personality or learning disorder. My family and I have suspected it for some time, however. One suspect is Asperger's Syndrome--while I don't want to condition myself to believe I am an "Aspie" without proffessional assessment, I can assess some Vine books. The first for consideration is Nick Dubin's "Asperger Syndrome and Anxiety." Sorry it took so long--I've been reviewing a lot of interesting stuff!

The writing is sound. The author mostly avoids being a "little professor" with unnecessary jargon or excessively formal grammar. Yet he doesn't shy from some basic counseling and psychiatric terms. I estimate a 9th or 10th grade reading level. The book also appears to carry over ideas from Asperger Syndrome and Bullying, providing a continuity and transition for the familiar reader.

As slim as the volume already is, wordiness does detract from the read. It's okay to use contractions, and to replace "medical science has proven" with "medicine proves" or "medicine proved". Also, repetition of key points is a fundamental of exposition, but it can also be annoying. Please don't confuse repetition with the "action points" at the end of each chapter--I think those are a good idea.

The idea of this book is more introduction than a therapeutic course. It summarizes the original research, opinions, or treatments of various doctors in the field. The author lends weight to what he feels is going to be the most useful to his audience, as opposed to bogging down the text with an objective history or index of treatment. Dubin periodically admits his personal bias, and recommends deeper reading. The value of Dubin's own experience is that readers can compare and contrast it to the anecdotes of other writers, forming whatever opinion will be helpful to you. That said, I feel the book should further explore its source theories and the author's own conclusions. As short as the book is, plenty of room lies for growth.

The most helpful idea off the bat is the sort of thing building off my own science reading. I have long empowered my obstacles. Something as simple as navigating to a new house or business continues to fill me with anxiety, even if less than I used to feel when I was learning to drive. Dubin has even beat me to publishing books despite being the same age, because I've attached too much clutter in my head to the challenge. Do not give unnecessary power to your problems--so simple, and yet so easy to miss without an outsider to point it out for me.

I only have one big problem with this book as therapy. I'm fascinated by blendings of rational and irrational thought. Our minds veer from science to magic to lunacy and back without missing a beat. Keeping in mind that I reviewed a pre-publication proof, this is the problem with "Anxiety and Spirituality".

I agree some people think and fear and fret until the idea of Death hems them inside. So I'm pleased the actual spiritualism and philosophy tries to open folks up while keeping them on planet Earth. Such as the examples of Victor Frankl and Kierkegaard, or lessons from the Koran and Buddhism. Such psychological tools do not necessarily put the patient into a collision course with science.

My concern lies with the feel-good, New Age pseudoscience from the 1970s and early `80s.Including Near Death Experiences by Raymond Moody and Elizabeth Ross, or Rupert Sheldake's version of morphogenetic fields. Dubin does not inform his readers that these are fringe concepts, but reframes them as appealing to the independent spirit of an Aspie. He also plays loose with Chaos Theory and Quantum Mechanics, assigning soul or God-like traits to them in an attempt to illustrate that the patient need not fear the death of identity.

But in doing so, the author commits the age-old sin of imposing fancy upon the mundane. And a grave sin indeed; as the target audience suffers a syndrome, often co-morbid with various personality disorders, feeding delusions might only cause more harm.Chaos theory, for example, does not say that the flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil will cause a tornado in Texas, but almost the opposite--that a butterfly is dampened and dispersed by its environment so that we can't predict any long term, long-distance effects. This very uncertainty is part of what is so upsetting to many people, not just Aspies, so imagine what will happen emotionally if somebody stumbles upon a contrary view.

Of course, psychologists and psychiatrists are as human as their patients, with conclusions as likely to slide from medicine to voodoo. As an antidote, I recommend Occum's Razor: "Do not multiply entities unnecessarily." A nice dovetail to Dubin's own advice, do not give power to ideas that have not earned it.

Dubin's power isn't to shrill for religion or pseudoscience--it is to empower the patient. And for that I give him all credit. Writing books will not cure his syndrome, so much as manage it while earning an income and educating society. "Asperger's Syndrome and Anxiety" cannot be considered a comprehensive text, but it is an accessible introduction to some popular therapies and personal advice, and on that level it has promise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable information, personal, easy to read.
This book, in my opinion, was extensively researched and carefully crafted. The author offers a lot of practical advice and hope without romanticising.I found it very helpful in both understanding Aspergers and coping with it.Thanks, Mr. Dubin, we ARE capable of empathy.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good resource for Asperger's Syndrome folks
My son has Asperger's and some books we have found are useful and some are duds. this is a good book, with practical advice for the person with Asperger's and the one who loves them.
My son has had panic attacks from time to time and with Asperger's people treat you differant. You know you are differant.. and see and hear things in another way than others do.
Good resource, wise council.. worth buying.

4-0 out of 5 stars worth reading -- starts great, falls apart at the end
This book is definately worth reading by people with Aspergers and those close to them. The first part is very insightful. It offers lots of info on how Aspies think and view things, and how these common viewpoints can lead to anxiety. The author, who has Aspergers, discusses how Aspies may try to overcompensate for the "deficiencies" of Aspergers and how the way that this is done can lead to anxiety. The trauma of growing up with Aspergers, and the effects this has on peoples' psyche is covered at length. Also discussed, with great insight, is:hypersensitivity, perfectionism, difficulty transistioning, monotropism, problems with nonverbal cues, auditory processing difficulties, and depression. This are not discussed clinically, thought there is much scientific evidence mentioned, but are discussed as they actually feel to the person experiencing them.Again, great insights into thought processes that lead to or further these issues. The second half of the book covers what to do about these issues. Here I found the book to be lacking. When the book ventured into "new age" things like morphogenic fields in its chapter on spirituality, it lost my respect.Still, the first half of the book has insights worth reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book with biblical wisdom
I haven't finished the whole book yet, but so far it's been helpful to give insight into why people experience these emotions. It also gives advice on eating healthy, sleeping well and learning to trust God.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
As a Christian it is very hard to struggle with anxiety. There are so many scriptures that tell us not to be anxious but the anxiety still comes. This book has helped me tremedously to find the root of my anxiety.
It is scripture based and Elyse Fitzpatrick does an amazing job referencing Biblical truth. I would highly recommend this book for anyone suffering from anxiety or has a loved one that is. Until we understand the soverign Lord we serve we can never be free of fear or worries. I still have my bouts of anxiety and even had a few panic attacks but I always know they pass and I always know that there is no real fear behind them. As long as I completely trust and rely on Christ as my provider and comfortor there is nothing to fear. This is something I have to tell myself daily! Trust and rely on Christ. Get this book you will love it. I read it daily!

Product Description
Therese Borchard may be one of the frankest, funniest people on the planet. That, combined with her keen writing abilities has made her Beliefnet blog, Beyond Blue, one of the most trafficked blogs on the site.

BEYOND BLUE, the book, is part memoir/part self-help.It describes Borchard's experience of living with manic depression as well as providing cutting-edge research and information on dealing with mood disorders.By exposing her vulnerability, she endears herself immediately to the reader and then reduces even the most depressed to laughter as she provides a companion on the journey to recovery and the knowledge that the reader is not alone.

Comprised of four sections and twenty-one chapters, BEYOND BLUE covers a wide range of topics from codependency to addiction, poor body image to postpartum depression, from alternative medicine to psychopharmacology, managing anxiety to applying lessons from therapy.Because of her laser wit and Erma Bombeck sense of humor, every chapter is entertaining as well as serious.

5-0 out of 5 stars A voice that rings true
This book made me feel hopeful not only for myself, but also for other mentally ill family members.I refer to it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful suggestions for living with depression
I enjoyed Beyond Blue very much.In a witty way she addresses issues that many of us deal with daily and are ashamed to admit. It is nice to know that you aren't alone in the world that doesn't always make sense or fit into the proper niche.

The suggestions as to how to keep life between the ditches though not new, are excellent reminders that staying sane and managing your illness is a full time job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
I've just started reading "Beyond Blue" and checking out the author's blog and I can't believe there is another person out there like me!I've never fit in ANYWHERE and yet here she is writing down my life and my feelings in her words...I can't believe it!

I'm really glad this author has the balls to do what she's doing. She's already helped me through her "confessions" - just knowing there is someone else who gets it (whatever that means), isn't perfect but is more "normal" than what most "normal" people seem to be and who can put these things into words makes me feel less alone on this planet.

I gave up on self help books, 99% of therapists and 12 step meetings a long time ago. This book helps me in a whole different way.I'm relatively stable and very very sober but there's always that niggling feeling inside which has the danger of turning into something more sinister. But I see that I'm not alone and that makes a huge difference.

Love this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Honest, Raw, Real
What if you were afflicted by major depression, AND obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), AND manic-depressive tendencies, AND anxiety issues - what would you be?

Well, Therese Borchard, I guess!

I just finished reading her story in her book Beyond Blue (Surviving Depression and Anxiety and Making the Most of Bad Genes), which grew out of her Beyond Blue blog.

Why would I care about such a book? Well, because of my own history with depression. There's a unique window of understanding that fellow sufferers have, and I found it fascinating to trace Therese's thoughts and experiences in this volume.

And, I also felt immensely grateful that I did not experience the cocktail of disorders she seeks to survive daily!

Now I'll come right out and say that unless you are suffering with one of these disorders, or seeking to help someone else who is, you might find it to be heavy weather navigating Beyond Blue. However, for those with skewed brain chemistry, this is a valuable resource, for one overriding reason: You're not alone.

The greatest value of Terese's writing is that she very transparently, and often humorously, describes the day-to-day travails of living with a mind that refuses to stay within "normal" bounds. For those suffering with these afflictions, it can be tremendously lonely to experience the guilt, the confusion, the hopelessness that cannot be controlled by force of will. When she describes considering suicide 20 times a day, you cringe - but that's a silent and hideous reality for many folks, and Therese forthrightly lays it all out there.

Her writing style reflects her thought patterns, so there is an interesting "jumpiness" and spontaneity in the the book. This is not a highly structured medical treatise, but almost a train-of-thought account of living with multiple conditions. That humanity, that surprising candor, is what makes this Terese's story in a unique way. As a wife and mother, she is very open about how mental illness impacts her relationships. She's a very lovable nutcase (yes, she refers to herself in such language!) and I'd love to stroll around Annapolis and talk with her further!

I found the book moving, not because of its literary style, but because of its raw humanity. It's not easy to admit to struggles with mental illness. People don't understand why you walk under a dark cloud, why you feel like the most worthless person to walk the planet, why drugs (and other interventions) may be an absolute necessity to achieve day-to-day sanity. Therese is providing a valuable service to many just by being herself and hanging it all out there, dirty laundry and all.

And so I will take this opportunity to thank her, not just for sending the book, but for being Therese. There's a whole bunch of folks out there who need help getting beyond blue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes you there. Shows you hope.
Borchard takes you all the way into the Hell that is depression and bipolar disorder and highlights both faith and the importance of finding the right therapist and combination of medications for each individual as effective lifelines in the rough process so many people endure as they work to feel better. Loaded with smart research and inspiration. And humor. Truly amazing. ... Read more

Product Description
Harold Bloom's The Anxiety of Influence has cast its long shadow of influence since it was first published in 1973. Through an insightful study of Romantic poets, Bloom puts forth his central vision of the relations between tradition and the individual artist. His argument that all literary texts are a strong misreading of thise that precede them had an enormous impact on the practice of deconstruction and poststructuralist literary theory. The book remains a central work of criticism for all students of literature.

Written in a moving personal style, anchored by concrete examples, and memorable quotes, this second edition of Bloom's classic work maintains that the anxiety of influence cannot be evaded--neither by poets nor by responsible readers and critics. A new Introduction, centering upon Shakespeare and Marlowe, explains the genesis of Bloom's thinking, and the subsequent influence of the book on literary criticism of the past twenty years Here, Bloom asserts that the anxiety of influence comes out of a complex act of strong misreading, a creative interpretation he calls "poetic misprision." The influence-anxiety does not su much concern the forerunner but rather is an anxiety achieved in and by the story, novel, play, poem, or essay. In other words, without Keats's reading of Shakespeare, Milton, and Wordsworth, we could not have Keats's odes and sonnets and his two Hyperions.

This new edition is certain to find a responsive audience among the new generation of scholars, students, and layreaders interested in the Bloom canon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Fun
No, Bloom's book is not fun in the traditional sense of the word; rather, it is a fun way to peer into the psychological tropes that govern poetic composition and an enjoyable method to use when analyzing poetic texts. I used the book as a foundation for writing a paper about John Milton's influence on 18th-century English poet Thomas Gray, and each stage of poetic growth that Bloom discusses provides endless possibilities for explicating the meta-textual meanings of any poem when placed in context to its predecessors. Bloom's writing style is highly erudite and may seem dauntingly academic at first, but his ideas are often very clear and proceed in a highly logical manner (despite various tangents about the origins of Bloom's chosen terms).

The book may require more than one close reading to fully understand Bloom's dense and complex theory, but in each read, one finds more passages fulfill the book's overarching thesis. The book may not be of much use to someone who is not interested in poetry or literary studies, but worth a read if you're into studying poetry or literary critical theory of any type. Bloom is also one of our century's most important (if debated) critics, and should be required reading for all interested in English literature and theory.

3-0 out of 5 stars philosophy of influence in poetry and the arts
David Bloom is probably the leading proponent of literary influence theory, and his thoughts have even spilled over into other arts (specifically into music -- see Mark Evan Bonds's AFTER BEETHOVEN and Joseph Straus's REMAKING THE PAST, for example); but his four books on influence are esoteric, to say the least.References require such a vast knowledge of poetry, literature, mythology, et al that his writings are beyond the casual reader. If you want to sink your teeth into something substantial, even controversial, start here!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the hysterical detractors
People such as Camper-Mann simply don't understand Bloom's ground-breaking book. It is not a typical academic piece of theorizing. Bloom begins with his own aesthetic responses, and discovers that writers who came later in a tradition have a real difficulty finding an original vision or creating original work. Bloom then tries to work out a theory to account for this.

At no point does Bloom suggest that a deterministic process is at work here. The great poets defy determinism and struggle against it. It was not pre-ordained that John Milton would appear in the 2nd generation after Shakespeare. Milton's own creative will carved out a place for him among the great poets. However, Milton appeared after the greatest poet in the language, and his attempt to stand up to the Shakespearean achievement had a massive impact on his poetry. In the same way, Wordsworth and Shelley wrote differently for having read and absorbed Milton. These are historical facts that Bloom tries to account for.

As for T.S. Eliot, he was profoundly influenced by Walt Whitman's poetry, but turned back to Christian ideas in a way that Whitman and other modern poets had refused to do. That is what's wrong with Eliot's work. Christianity is not a very profound source for poetic inspiration in the modern age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes and no
Yes Bloom is a great and inspiring critic, a great creator himself. Yes, Bloom's work is filled with tremendously interesting insights into Literature, remarkable unexpected connections between creators who seemed so distant from each other.
No, Literature does not follow the simple law of progression, or the simple Law of a creator's strong reaction to the strong creators before. There are figures in Literature who in some way seem to be reacting to no one( Hopkins is one good example) and figures whose whole discourse is in absorbing the creation of others not to transcend them but to celebrate them.( Borges) There are also creators who however they may be influenced by others, as Kafka was influenced by Dickens and perhaps Kierkegaard, have such a unique way of seeing the world that they seem to be born of themselves. In Literature it is not necessary always to stand on the shoulders of Giants much less knock the Giant down if one is to move forward.
The laws of literary creation are as mysterious and individual as the next new voice whichcomes to the world. Quixote may over- ride the romantic chivalrous literature Cervantes parodies but he does this in a comically humane way that no one before or since has or could surpass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greater than, you know? a book for people who read poetry.
I have previously described myself in a review as the most spaced-out poet on the planet, without describing the awful legal context in which such a view of myself is absolutely necessary. This book makes the context clear, but a general reader still might not understand how concrete this difficulty is because THE ANXIETY OF INFLUENCE is overtly a book about poetry, and hardly at all about exercising judgment. The page of the book where I left it open the longest, and where the book subsequently opened most easily, and which I read most often in the five weeks in which I was interested in this book, was page 58, which describes a poet who "experiences anxiety necessarily towards any danger that might end him as a poet." Without dwelling on the personalities of the people involved, it seems to me that the anxiety which this book is about is clearest in the case of the presidential election of 2000, in which the ability of the Florida Supreme Court to act as the ultimate judges of that opportunity to count ballots was subject to the power of the United States Supreme Court to judge the election in some way which would produce a result which would be opposite to what a majority of the Florida Supreme Court desired. (...)and poets can be much more open about what they are doing than judges, so it isn't too surprising that this book is about poets.

Freud and Nietzsche form a nice frame of reference for what is happening in this book. I kept looking for mentions of Rilke, which wasn't fruitful until page 99, the first page on "Daemonization or The Counter-Sublime." There it says, "History, to Rilke, was the index of men born too soon, but as a strong poet Rilke would not let himself know that art is the index of men born too late. . . . the dialectic between art and art, or what Rank was to call the artist's struggle against art . . . governed even Rilke, who outlasted most of his blocking agents, for in him the revisionary ratio of daemonization was stronger than in any other poet of our century." There is a page just before page 99 which quotes Emerson on the highest truth about all things going well, "long intervals of time, years, centuries, are of no account." (p. 98). Emerson shows up again on page 138, with the idea, "Who seem to die live," to precede the final section of the book, "Apophrates or The Return of the Dead." This part doesn't relate well to law, particularly for a system which keeps thinking that a judgment like the death penalty might be considered final at some point. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium relieved my anxiety as described in this review
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the same old same old
I have read other Albert Ellis books and there are some things that are the same but there are different self talk suggestions for anxiety. The book is set up so that the important ideas and suggestions are easy to find they are numbered and listed together.

I have found that his books are very helpful he speaks of how a person thinks when they make themselves anxious he lays out what you are saying to yourself and what thoughts you need to change to be less anxious. Most other books I have read have case histories where people who used the author's formula and got better, there are some examples of that in this book but Dr. Ellis isn't offering pie in the sky answers he is very practical in his expectations of success.

I used Dr. Ellis' books in conjunction with therapy and found it to be very helpful to change how I see life and I think that is why I am having less problems with depression these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Remedy for Anxiety
This is the single best self-help book I've ever read. Before beginning it, anxiety had crippled me. Why? I had been taught or learned to think irrationally. Ellis' method is nothing more or less than a way of teaching you how to think rationally in a world that encourages us to think irrationally. Ellis gives you a thousand weapons with which to attack the irrationality that creates anxiety and anxiety attacks, and it works, and it works fast. But you have to use it. Thanks to this book and Ellis' REBT theory, I was also led to SMART Recovery, which has a Facebook fan page here [...]
At long last, rational solutions for substance abuse, too, nased on REBT. I recommend anyone experiencing anxiety buy this book immediately and at the expense of any and all others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing
This book has certainly helped me overcome my anxiety.A must read for anyone suffering with anxiety disorders but do not want to succumb to medications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing
When I started college I was a complete and utter anxious ship-wreck. I couldn't sleep, think straight, and felt like I was going to lose my mind. Basic daily tasks suddenly became terrifying or anxiety provoking. It was a scary and exhausting time for me.

On the edge, I went to see my school counselor. She recommended I read Ellis's books and his Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy style. I have to admit, I expected very little. Honestly, I felt like she had passed the buck and gave me a book instead of helping me. However, I was desperate and would have tried anything short of an exorcism to feel better. I read his first book, "A new guide to rational living." (I would recommend reading that book before this one, it gives more background. This book is still good, too.) I was astonished. Within a few weeks, I legitimately felt noticeably better. Nearly two years later, I can honestly say his books changed my life and multiple friends and family members who have borrowed my books.

It takes time and won't happen all at once. As Ellis would say, you spent a life time learning how to be anxious, and can't undo that in a day. It took me about a year to get much better, two years to completely change my life, and three to be an entirely new person. I am deeply saddened that Ellis died recently. I would have loved to thank him for completely overhauling my life and making me a much happier, outgoing, and less anxious person. Now, I plan to study abroad in a foreign country. This is something the old me could have never handled.

PS. Dr Ellis is in fact a well respected psychologist. Even the great Beck recognizes his work.Ellis' work is based on his empirical studies with real patients he counseled throughout his long career. His stuff is not Dr.Phil style non-sense like "You're like a shoe with no strings," or the ever classic Dr.Phil statement "get over it!" I hate when people tease psychological books because Dr. Phil (and others like him) poisoned the entire genre. "Those" people are first and foremost entertainers. Dr.Ellis is real, and his work actually helps, but it takes time!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can change your life
I have used this book to supplement the work I'm doing with a good therapist.I learn something important about myself every time I read it, and I feel like I am reading a book that is written about me.It has been so valuable in my work towards treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and depression. For me, this is the most valuable book I have read in my entire life. For the first time, I have hope that I can overcome the debilitating anxiety I have lived with for years.I am learning skills that will help me from relapsing into old ineffective behaviors.I will reference this book for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Flight Book on the subject
This is the most complete, easiest to read and comprehensive book I have read on the subject. Chock full of information that will help therapists and clients deal with whatever comes their way via anxiety. A winner.Reading Thomas Merton: A Guide to His Life and Work

5-0 out of 5 stars For the anxious and frustrated.. a book that understands
I first read this book in New Zealand.. and soon became hooked. Mainly as I suffer from anxiety and depression. I found it insiteful and cathartic. It helped me to understand more fully my idiosyncracies and attitudes, and gave me more peace of mind. It offers good advice on how to help combat these debilitating conditions and gain your life back. I would highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from these conditions, or lives with anyone who has them, to better understand what feelings are involved, and that no one ever chooses to suffer; for many reasons, it is simply how our brain reacts to difficult situations, and no one is to blame. An empathetic, yet highly practical book.

5-0 out of 5 stars copies to family and friends
I have had a copy for many years and have given copies to a grandchild and one child, since anxiety can be inherited (my father had it, and we also have hypoglycemia). I have also given the order forms in the back to friends. I first became aware of panic attacks as an eight year old, but I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my forties, and only after many counseling sessions for panic which didn't help.I found this book and it meant the end of Xanax for me.One doesn't have to read it all at once. The first things to learn are distraction and breathing exercises. Then move on to magnification and other thought control processes.

Trusted parenting author Elizabeth Pantley brings you another winning no-cry formula that helps you solve these common separation issues. 5-0 out of 5 stars No Cry Separation Anxiety - A Book for All Parents
I liked the fact that the author looks at separation anxiety and how to deal with it as a way to bring families closer together instead of splitting it apart.

If you are having any issues dealing with separation anxiety, I would highly recommend this book!

This book had great advice and information on how to help your child deal with issues of separation anxiety. Our yungest has had some issues with this in the past and in reading this book I tended to learn quite a bit, including ways in which I was feeding her anxiety. The more that I ead, the more that I found that it was more me then her that was causing the anxiety that I was seeing. After reading this book, I feel more confident about leaving our youngest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner from Elizabeth Pantley
First we are introduced to separation anxiety and it's basics. Then we are given tips for babies and toddlers. Then we meet the Magic Bracelet idea. Full instructions with different ideas for use are included. A magic bracelet is included with the book but you can choose to make your own or buy your own.

Following that is specific tips for preschool and school age children. The section after than addresses certain separation anxiety issues such as babysitters, daycare, going to work, starting school, new baby, going to bed alone, playdates and parties, overnights, travel, military duty, divorce, business travel and siblings going to school. Finally parent separation anxiety is addressed and there is a short chapter on Separation Anxiety Disorder.

The magic bracelet is a great idea. It's for your child to keep you close when they are away. She suggests having two identical bracelets so that if one is lost, there is a second one. The included bracelet is a simple orange woven bracelet with the word "Magic" on it and velcro clasp.

My kids cry sometimes when I leave but it doesn't last long and they don't have too many problems. However my eldest is starting school this September so I will try the bracelet with her.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide to help parents and children
Another great addition to the "No-Cry" series, this book helps parents recognize that separation anxiety is common and normal for children at various ages and stages, and helps them decide what gentle, respectful steps to take to help ease a child's separation anxiety. I love that the book offers a balanced set of ideas that allows each family to choose the right mix of techniques for that family and the temperament and age of the particular child. It is wonderful how Pantley respects the close bond between parent and child, and still manages to present a variety of helpful techniques to prevent or eliminate separation anxiety. The Magic Bracelet included with the book is a creative solution that can work its "magic" with children of many ages. My 22-month-old was thrilled when I gave her her very own bracelet filled with my kisses and love.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for My Client Families
As a Baby Planner in North Carolina, my specialty is assisting moms returning to work after having a baby. After baby sleep concerns, separation anxiety is the most common concern from my clients. For baby sleep issues, the no-cry sleep solution by Elizabeth Pantley is my #1 go-to resource. So of course I was excited about the publication of the no-cry separation anxiety solution by Elizabeth Pantley.
This is a very easy to read book and one where in a moment of frustration, you can flip quickly to reference a topic. The author explains the origin of separation anxiety - ensuring that you will never feel embarrassed, ashamed or apologetic for your child's emotions. This book doesn't only address leaving a child at day-care - it addresses bedtime fears, babysitter scenarios and even those short gym child watch drop-offs. The book is full of practical, easy to implement suggestions. You can pick and choose from many ideas to implement. The book even includes a "magic bracelet" to use when separating with instructions on how to introduce and use the bracelet to help comfort your child. My copy of this book is already highlighted, dog-eared and well appreciated.Stephanie Keel-Sweet Pea Baby Planners of Charlotte

Product Description
A revolutionary, proven-effective model that shows you how to:
· Identify symptoms of mixed anxiety and depression
· Cope with negative and painful emotions
· Calm your anxious mind
· Regulate dramatic mood shifts
· Learn how to soothe yourself
· energy and enthusiasm

Imagine feeling depressed and drained of energy and initiative while also being overwhelmed with feelings of dread and anxiety about the future. The consequence of this intolerable state of mind amounts to behavioral paralysis, a profound loss of control and quality of life. Therapist call this condition co-occuring depression and anxiety. Clinical research suggests that 60 percent of depression sufferers concurrently experience some kind of anxiety disorder. This book, the first written to general readers about this condition, uses the powerful techniques of dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, to help readers control both conditions.

DBT begins with the assumption that psychological problems are the result of feeling or emotional responses that are in conflict. It integrates a range of theraputic techniques to "tease apart" and resolve the competing internal needs and urges that generate anger, depression, and anxiety. By recognizing these conflicting emotions and forming new expectations, readers alleviate the symptoms generated by these conflicts. The book begins by having readers identify their most painful inner conflict. Then they develop compromises that acknowledge the issue but limit its ability to interfere with their lives—effectively reducing the extent to which their emotions govern who they are or what that are capable of. Exercises focus on assisting readers to become more responsive to uplifitng aspects of their enviroment and tolerant of unavoidable emotions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Depressed and Anxious: The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Workbook for Overcoming Depression & Anxiety
When I first purchased this book I thought it looked good. When I began to read it I was overwhelmed with the 200+ pages of the book, the many exercises in the workbook, and the many suggestions. But I have been depressed and anxious for many years, so I thought I would give it a try.The book describes my condition well. The exercises are specific, thought provoking, and made me question why I do the things I do.Each chapter unfolds a new piece of the puzzle of my depression.I stopped allowing my experiences to be experienced (what he calls mindfulness), stopped doing things that used to bring me pleasure (emotion regulation), had lost meaning in my life, and was not leading my life strategically. This workbook walked me through the process.I would highly recommend this workbook to anyone who is depressed or anxious. It is not an easy process going through this workbook. It took patience and I had to pace myself. But the results have been great.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Books Is Very Helpful So Far - Great Addition to My Therapy
Recently, I wrote to Dr. Marra and shared the following sentiments: I have been using [this book] for about 6 weeks along with guidance and medication therapy from psychiatrist Dr. James Reich, M.D. to treat my Depression & Anxiety due to PTSD from a traumatic experience years ago...

I have found this workbook to be very helpful so far, as well as completely understanding of the symptoms and cycles... Plus, the language is easy to understand and relate with, unlike some other books on the subject matter that seem written for an audience of physicians or scientists only.

Especially, I like that the material is presented in small sections that are easy to digest, and that you can do it at your own pace, or keep going back to exercises that resonated or were extra challenging.

What else I really like about it is the great encouragement to be very involved, and responsive to the text. You can make notes and diagrams in the book, which may help identify and express what's going on with you if finding other ways is difficult.

Some "lightbulb" moments have taken place for me thanks to this book. I look forward to continuing to work through the book now (and - no offense - hopefully never again - let's hope I do the work now so I don't need the book again)."

Different people have written different types of reviews. To each his own. If you really want to get better you will find whatever help works for you. For me, this book has been a great addition to my therapy. Reading it gave me the feeling that somebody out there really "got it" - what I was going through, and that in itself was huge because to have these two disorders at the same time is really confusing and complex, especially to the person suffering.

Best of luck to all those in sincere search for resources to improve and enhance their lives. All the best...

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
I'd gotten a crash course on DBT at a seminar, and needed more information. Well, you will get it here, without falling asleep. This book is not too dry, but informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars DBT in a Nutshell ~ Working it Through
Dr. Marra has spent years in private practice utilizing the tools of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy to assist clients in overcoming depression and anxiety. His expertise is in every page.It is concise and clearly written and explains how anxiety and depression go hand in hand in our stressful lives along a continuum of being well. Working the workbook pages ensures the reader the capacity to understand the complexities of dialectics in behavior and how to observe our behavior without emotional disturbances that get "out of control" or aka emotional "dysregulation".Well written for the interested consumer of mental health services for empowering themselves in a world that feels topsy turvey with emotions going in two directions at once.I highly recommend this workbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little more
What I like about this workbook is that it does offer a little more text and science and I like that cognitive aspect of it.Behavioral therapy feels like I'm trying to trick myself and feels more manipulative. If I know what behavior I'm trying to change, and here are some good ways to go about it, and then here's some things I can try in the heat of the moment, then it's a choice I am making. The cognitive approaches of behavioral therapy are what work for me.There are other simpler workbooks (and good too) for a different audience like Don't Let Your Emotions Run Your Life. ... Product Description
Read by the author

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, panic and anxiety attacks affect tens of millions of Americans. One of the first people who studied and wrote about anxiety and panic disorders was Dr. Claire Weekes.

Pass Through Panic gives the listener simple methods needed to pass through the web of fear, anxiety and panic that has imprisoned them. Weekes gives the sufferer hope that there is an end in sight to the cycle in which they are trapped. Her techniques of acceptance and surrender show that by passing through panic, rather than trying to stop it, you find yourself in a place of strength and optimism, rather than one of fear and frustration.

After listening to this audio, one will come away confident that Dr. Weekes truly understands the mind and feelings of the sufferer. This understanding lays the foundation for acceptance of the simple, four-step method that effectively deals with this disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best resource on the subject available...
The author has since passed away, and it's too bad... because I imagine there are endless scores of people that want to thank her for her books and tapes. There is SO much garbage out there on the subject, it'sdistressing. Not only that, but your average doctor doesn't have a clue when it comes to dealing with anxiety, outside of reaching into the cabinet for the latest drug samples the sales reps gave them.

This audio-book is for people who want to not just understand, but work on curing their problem. It's all about the approach... and in all the doctors I've visited, none ever made it so simple to understand. Probably because they really don't understand it themselves. Dr. Weekes herself says at one point in the book... "it's not the mystery that a nervously ill person thinks it is."Well, she's right. That doesn't mean it's easy to solve, but it really is simple. Once you realize that, you're half-way to a solution.

If you truly want to improve your situation and are ready to change your outlook and do a little work... this is an excellent resource. There aren't loads of lists to keep and charts to keep. It's just information to ingest and then put into play in your daily life. No BS.

Some people have a little problem with her "delivery." To that I say... get over it. She's from a different era and I actually find her delivery to be charming, if not even amusing at times.
It's a little stern, but you can hear the conviction in her voice. You can hear in her tone... that this is from experience. (As I recall, she was a sufferer herself at one point.)
Some of her terminology is a little dated, but the information she conveys is invaluable.

Every student going through med school should be made to listen to and understand this book, in my opinion... and if you're an anxiety sufferer, you must own this and give it a chance.
No magic pills, just the truth.
