5-0 out of 5 stars For Every Speech Pathologist!
When I started school, my instructor made us buy the book for class. I am so very thankful she did because I have since placed tabs throughout the entire book. There are listings for formal tests, informal tests/screeners, and good examples for data sheets. I love this book and have seen many colleagues with this book as well. I would definitely suggest to speech pathologists at any level of your career to consider purchasing this book. Very helpful!

The book is very detailed with information about the diff types of aphasias and other neurogenic disorders. It is a must have for an SLP student or SLP!
I gave it four stars just because it isn't the easiest textbook to read. The way the material is presented is very complex.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful workbook
We are finding this book very helpful as my husband recovers from a brain tumor and stroke. He has expressive aphasia, and our insurance isn't paying for any therapy. This gives us some exercises to do, and helps me see what areas he is having more problems with.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good workbook !!
The author is a forerunner in aphasia. My speech therapist have me the exercises, just like the workbook.

Aphasia results from a stroke. My aphasia is different (did not a result from stroke). The workbook is very simple for me. But another friend who has her husband had a stroke, said that the exercises really help him.

4-0 out of 5 stars Be Your Own Speech Therapist with This Book
Around my little Texas town, speech therapists are scarce as hen's teeth. But my mother is recovering from a massive stroke, and she needed the speech therapy we couldn't find for months.

Workbook for Aphasia was and is my solution. We've used it for almost two months, and her progress has been better with this workbook than with the speech therapist we finally found. In fact, the workbook is so comprehensive that the therapist uses it in addition to her own materials.

What would I improve?Very little, except to include more intermediate materials. It seems to go very quickly from easy to very sophisticated, but we need more exercises in the middle or not-quite-so-easy range.

I'm glad we had this book available for the two months when we had no speech therapist to help. It's been effective!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Workbook for Aphasia
My husband suffered a stroke on October 1st and initially received speech therapy, however upon returning to our small city we found there were no speech therapists available within a 200 mile radius.
We ordered the Workbook for Aphasia and were delighted with the quantity and quality of the exercises in the book. The Workbook for Aphasia: Exercises for Expressive And Receptive Language Functioning (William Beaumont Hospital has been a tremendous help to my husband and he can now carry on a normal conversation with very little problem finding words.
The exercises in this book are of equal or greater quality than those of a professional speech therapist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Resource Book
I am a speech/language pathologist who has used many sections of this book during therapy sessions. There are verbal expressive sections as well as written exercises.I have adapted sections to use in group therapy sessions.I find this book very useful and would recommend it to any working SLP or family member working at home with a person recovering from stroke and aphasia. ... Product Description
A Mind of My Own is a dramatic true story of one woman''s recovery from traumatic brain damage following a motorcycle accident in Greece. Facing far more than broken bones and physical impairments, this classical antiquity professor had lost what was most important to her: her ability to successfully use language. This insightful and moving memoir begins with her awakening from a coma and not recognizing family members and follows her journey of recovery. Using journal entries, medical records, letters, and more, she tells her story from multiple perspectives. In a process reminiscent of the literary ascent in Flowers for Algernon, her journal entries illustrate her remarkable journey and provide an intimate narrative of what it takes to become a whole person again after severe brain damage. Her successful step-by-step struggle to return to a normal life is a reminder of what the human spirit is capable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mind of My Own
An excellent book to understand Aphasia, one that an individual might not think is interesting, yet is fascinating.Aphasia was a word I did not know. Strokes and brain injuriesoccur too often for us not to understand them, both from the point of view of the caretaker and the caregiver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indomitable Will by Elmer West
I'm posting this review of my daughter's book for my friend Elmer West, who has no email: This book is the detailed, personal account of Harrianne Mills' recovery from serious physical injuries and devastating brain damage following a motorcycle accident in Greece in May 1985. She was rushed to the hospital, quickly examined, declared to be dead and sent to the morgue. Only then was it discovered that she was in a coma. The coma lasted only 12 hours but her recovery took an agonizing year as she slowly began to recognize family members, remember her own identity and learn again how to walk, talk, think and read. Harrianne's recovery was the result of good medical help, much of it related to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, and the loving care of her mother through most of that staggering journey toward normalcy. Beyond everything else, it was due to her indomitable will to get well. She tells her own story in stark detail, buttressed by medical records and input from family and friends. For twelve years before the accident she was a college professor of classical languages. Now she is on the staff of the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology. This story has the thrust of a beyond belief novel; except that it is the true story of an amazingly bright, free spirited woman who never gave up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Remembrance of things past
Harrianne Mills' book, A Mind of My Own, is a gem.It is a moving, enlightening account of a Classics Professor's recovery from aphasia.Ms. Mills is, indeed,a gifted and engaging writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving Memoirs
Ms. Mills provides insights into how her mind functioned (and failed to function) during her long recovery from a severe brain injury. As the reader follows the author's mental re-"connections" to her bodily functions, her family, her friends, her work, her social interactions, her emotions, and her views on life itself, the reader can assess and reassess his or her own "connections."

Product Description

This book provides both a theoretical and practical reference to cognitive neuropsychological approaches to speech and language therapists working with people with aphasia. Having evolved from the activity of a group of clinicians working with people with aphasia, it is a highly practical guide that aims to interpret the theoretical literature as it relates to aphasia and link it directly to available assessment tools and therapy techniques.

The opening section of the book provides an overview of the theory underpinning the approach and how it can be applied to the assessment and interpretation of language-processing impairments. The second section offers a working explanation of different components of language processing, outlining the deficits that may arise from impairment to each component. In addition, the clinician is guided to available assessments to test out clinical hypotheses and offered interpretations of performance patterns. The final section provides a comprehensive overview of the therapy literature with systematic summaries of the therapies undertaken and a synthesis of the findings to date.

This book has been written by clinicians with hands-on experience. It will be an invaluable resource for clinicians and students of speech and language therapy and related disciplines.

Product Description
Spreen and Risser present a comprehensive, critical review of available methods for the assessmentof aphasia and related disorders in adults and children. The authors explore test instruments and approaches that have been used traditionally for the diagnosis of aphasia, ranging from bedside screening and ratings, to tests of specific aspects of language, and to comprehensive and psychometrically standardized aphasia batteries.Coverage of other methods reflects newer trends, including the areas of functional communication, testing of bilingual patients, psycholinguistic approaches, and pragmatic and discourse-related aspects of language in everyday life. The authors also examine the expansion of language assessment to individuals with non-aphasic neurological disorders, such as patients with traumatic brain injury, lesions of the right hemisphere, the healthy elderly, and invidulas with dimentia.Taking a flexible and empirical approach to the assessment process in their own clinical practice, Spreen and Risser review numerous test instruments and their source for professionals and students-in-training to choose from in their own use.The introductory chapters cover the history of aphasia assessment, a basic outline of subtypes of aphasia- both neuro-anatomically and psycholinguistically-, and the basic psychometric requirements for assessment instruments. The final part discusses issues in general clinical pracitce, specifically questions of test selection and interpretation.L The book is a thorough and practical resource for speech and language pathologists, neuropsychologists, and their students and trainees. ... Product Description
As a consequence of the disability movement, the thinking generated by the World Health Organization's classification of disability and functioning, and an upturn in concern for the long-term consequences of aphasia, it has become apparent that two distinctive pathways for the treatment of aphasia have emerged over the past decade. The first (and most traditional) involves assessment and management directed toward lessening the effects of the impairment of aphasia, while the second pathway focuses less on specific language than on the psychosocial consequences of aphasia. This unique text specifically contrasts impairment- and consequences-focused treatment with the aim of providing clinicians with a level playing field that permits them to evaluate for themselves the relative contributions that each approach provides, to evaluate their relative strengths and weaknesses, and finally to seek common ground. An opening chapter sets the scene, while the heart of the book, based on real cases, concerns five meticulously described, yet hypothetical individuals with aphasia. In each of the cases, detailed descriptions and assessment results are provided and clinical management plans, representing each approach, are presented internationally by recognized expert clinicians. ... Product Description
This is the first single-authored book to attempt to bridge the gap between aphasia research and the rehabilitation of patients with this language disorder.Studies of the deficits underlying aphasia and the practice of aphasia rehabilitation have often diverged, and the relationship between theory and practice in aphasiology is loose. The goal of this book is to help close this gap by making explicit the relationship between what is to be rehabilitated and how to rehabilitate it.L Early chapters cover the history of aphasia and its therapy from Broca's discoveries to the 1970's, and provide a description of the classic aphasia syndromes. The middle section describes the contribution of cognition neuropsychology and the treatment models it has inspired. It includes discussion of the relationship between the treatment approach and the functional model upon which it is based. The final chapters deal with aphasia therapy. After providing a sketch of a working theory of aphasia, Basso describes intervention procedures for disorders resulting from damage at the lexical and sentence levels as well as a more general conversation-based intervention for severe aphasics.L Anna Basso has run an aphasia rehabilitation unit for more than thirty years. In this book she draws on her considerable experience to provide researchers, clinicians, and their students and trainees with comprehensive coverage of the evolution and state of the art of aphasia research and therapy. ... Product Description
Aphasia is a language disorder in which there is an impairment (but not loss) of speech and of comprehension of speech. Depending on the area and extent of the damage, someone suffering from aphasia may be able to speak but not write, or vice versa, or display any of a wide variety of other deficiencies in language comprehension and production. This book will review grammatical world class processing by aphasic individuals and bilingual aphasia, each of which is essential to an understanding of the topic. This book will also examine the role of the right hemisphere for language processing and successful therapeutic interventions in aphasic patients. Furthermore, new findings for the understanding of neural processes involved in the recovery of language functions in aphasic subjects are discussed. This book also expands and improves upon the currently accepted methodology used in the diagnosis of dementia, particularly when aphasia is a core symptom. Finally, dual-route models and right-hemispheric accounts are examined to predict comprehension of figurative language in healthy speakers as well as in patients with language disorders. ... This book in file format is designed as a practical resource for speech and language therapists to disseminate, encourage and facilitate writing about therapy interventions for aphasia by the practitioners themselves. This provides an opportunity for clinicians to contribute to the evidence base for practice. The description of the rationale for the therapy, the intervention itself and evaluation of outcomes are of paramount importance. Each contributor guides the reader through the thinking that they engaged in as they decided what to do, often with considerable frankness about the difficulties involved. These thought processes will be of interest to experienced therapists and students alike, offering ideas for further development of therapy tasks or reorienting familiar ones. Many of the studies demonstrate the complex interaction between combining work on the language impairment and the disabling impacts of becoming aphasic. The social, psychological, cultural, and logistical constraints on offering therapy are also explored. ... Read more
