5-0 out of 5 stars Phantom of the Night
Great book.....very informative, answers most of your questions on this involved subject, especially if you are newly diagnosed and confused. Most information is dead on, and worth a read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sleep Apnea- Phantom.....Excellent Information
A must-have book for anyone who has been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. All of the questions that you will forget to ask your doctor will be answered somewhere in this informative volume. Also great if someone close to you has apnea. This book should be included with every CPAP machine at delivery.

1-0 out of 5 stars SLEEP APNEA: THE PHANTOM OF THE NIGHT
I was so happy when I found this book online, after many weeks of researching. However, the book was a real disappointment.I am an educator at the college level, and believe me, this is nothing more than a textbook.
For whom, I am not sure since the subject of sleep apnea is not taught in mainstream classes in colleges or universities. It is misrepresented in the synopsis/summary of what to expect. If I would have wanted a "textboook" I would have gone to the college bookstore. It was money wasted because any of the "medical" and "technical" info included in it can be easily accessed on the internet. It provided no alternative ideas, information or treatments.I wish I could send it back for a refund!

5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of sleep apnea
I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and use CPAP. In order to be more involved with my own treatment I purchased four books on the subject to gain as much insight as possible. This is without a doubt the most informative. It describes the condition, compares it to normal sleep patterns and gives nearly encyclopedic information on treatments and what you can do to help yourself. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY useful book
Lots of good information, presented in clear language. One of the authors is a patient, and I found his comments particularly helpful - especially his notes about how we ALL hate the CPAP equipment, but there are good reasons to continue to struggle with it, to explore better options, etc.... because the tradeoff for better sleep, better quality of life, and better prognosis for longterm wellness, make it worth while.Lots of pictures, excellent explanations throughout.Highly recommended. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars apnea
I have been diagnosed with apnea and use a CPAP. I bought four books to gain a deeper insight into my condition. While informative this book does not cover the subject nearly as well as Sleep Apnea - Phantom of the Night. I would not recommend purchase of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great info - where did they get the pictures?!
Great information, well conveyed. One of the authors is a sufferer; the other is the spouse of a snorer so they know of what they speak. Couldn't help but marvel at the grainy, awful, poor resolution pictures that look like they came from a 1960 science book. I guess the small circulation / audience doesn't justify using current technolgy.

Very helpful and I would buy it again.

1-0 out of 5 stars not what I needed
I bought this book because it purported to have a chapter on alternative therapies. The chapter was absolutely useless and insulting to those of us who consider acupuncture and other complimentary medicine before jumping into prescriptions and invasive medical devises. The book was worthless to me.I threw it away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
Snoring and Sleep Apnea provides a thorough coverage of sleep studies and the use of the CPAP machine. It even offers drugs that can make sleep apnea worse - something not usually mentioned.Chapter 16 offers ideas on Alternative Medicine and Sleep Apnea which is also a topic that is rarely addressed. It discusses alternative medicine in a positive way while still warning the reader and suggesting some basic "rules of thumb" when investigating different treatments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doctor, patient's wife team up to create `great resource'
If you're struggling to stay awake during the day and find yourself nodding off if you are not actively doing something -- you should read this book.

If you are the bed partner of someone who snores loud enough to
keep you up at night -- this book is a must read.

If you have recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea you should
read this book.

"Snoring and Sleep Apnea" guides you down the path from the first realization that something might be wrong through the
diagnostic process and possible treatment options available to people with apnea.

The authors are sleep specialist Ralph Pascualy, paired with the wife of one of his patients, Sally Warren Soest.

This writing team may seem to be a little different at first look, but they do an excellent job of presenting the medical
information in clear, easy-to-understand language.

Pascualy and Soest take the reader through recognizing the symptoms of a sleep apnea, what to expect during a sleep study, how to locate a board-certified sleep specialist, and why you want to be treated by one.

The writing team provide real world examples of the various treatment options, and go on to explain who might benefit from each procedure or device -- and why.

The 272-page book includes pictures and descriptions of various masks and xPAP machines. It also provides a general overview of the features that can be found on these devices, and theproblems that are solved by those features.

Although the information is slightly dated because it has been in print since 2002, most of the general information remains
constant and practical today.

The duo also discuss various surgical options available to people with sleep apnea, including the additional hazards general anesthesia poses on people with sleep apnea. They explore why a procedure that will help a 10-year-old child with apnea is useless to an adult.

The use of short case studies helps the reader to grasp the importance of understanding pros and cons of the treatment options before selecting one.

I cannot praise the frankness with which they discuss dealing with durable medical equipment suppliers. This area often proves to be the weakest link in the patient's chain of treatment. Frequently patients don't understand they have the right to demand better service, that they have the right to select another home health care company if necessary to get the proper level of customer service, as well as patient care, that should be expected.

A home health care company is the company that you will be dealing with if you need replacement parts or technical assistance at 2 a.m. because your machine has malfunctioned.

The authors demonstrate how proper follow-up, coupled with good communication with the home health care company is critical.

Unlike many books, especially books that deal with medical issues, this one can be read from front to back -- or you can bounce around from one chapter to another -- totally out of sequence, finding the information that interests you most.

I wish I had known such a high quality resource was available in the early days of my family coping with sleep apnea and contending with some of the issues it presented. Instead, we walked the narrow road, learning as we went, and often getting bits of conflicting, often inaccurate, information about the disorder.

The authors show compassion to patients and their families coping with this strange condition that has stolen the productive person they used to know and love and guide them along the path back to a productive life. ... Read more

Book Description
Are your doctors doing all that they can to keep you in good health? Have they ever investigated the possibility that you may have sleep apnea, a condition whose incidence has reached epidemic proportions? Probably not, because most doctors don't do that screening routinely, although they certainly should. The long-term consequences from sleep apnea are wide-ranging and very serious, even life-threatening. And resolving sleep apnea can greatly reduce your risk of their occurrence. If your doctor doesn't take steps to protect you from sleep apnea, then you need to take those steps yourself.

This is the book that lays out for you what to look for, what to do, and why it's so important. It's easy to read, and so informative. You will learn what to do to protect yourself and your loved ones from the perils of the sleep apnea epidemic, a necessity for maintaining good health.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking addition to the basic research
I agree with the other reviewer that this book doesn't cover everything about sleep apnea. For me, it makes a connection to all kinds of other medical problems I never knew about and encouraged me to check them out.

If you want to learn all about sleep apnea and how it works, buy something else. But if you want to learn more than the standard "sleep doctor" story, or you are worried about someone who may have sleep apnea, buy this book too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth The Money
I was recently diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and bought this book to find out all that I could about it.This book was very short and had very little information on the subject.

I would not recommend that anyone purchase this because it was defiantely not worth the money infact it wasn't even really a book it was more like a pamphlet that was missing alot and told you nothing. ... Read more

Book Description

As technology advances, practicing or training otolaryngologists register in educational courses to refresh their surgical skills and stay abreast of these changes. While information is becoming available in several journals, there is a definite need for a single surgical atlas-like book that contains precise descriptions of the surgical techniques used in rhinology and sleep apnea surgery. Each chapter was written by surgeons with extensive experience in each topic who have already published on the specific procedure described. Each chapter contains diagrammatic or illustrative descriptions of surgical techniques and provides tips and pearls of wisdom to avoid complications when the procedures are performed. This comprehensive work of surgical information serves as a valuable resource for otolaryngologists in training to augment their surgical education and for practicing otolaryngologists as a review source to best approach the surgical pathologies they encounter in their practice of rhinology and treatment of sleep apnea.

5-0 out of 5 stars lower your eye pressures
I have had high eye pressures for my whole life. Having high eye pressure can contibute to glacoma. My eye doctor has suggested laser eye surgery more than once.(not the fun kind either!)I had searched the internet for anything that could help me out and this was the only reference that came up.
I bought the book 6 months ago and worked the simple "solution" to my eye issues. My pressures were close to 30(29.5) after 4 months the left is down to 20 and the right 26.I am extremly happy to avoid and surgery or medication. Its also helped me with another problem listed in the book.

BUY THIS BOOK if you have any of these medical problems issues. Its a cheap easy solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing difference
i had a migraine for a month. i bought the book. by using a 14 inch wedge under my pillow and sleeping with my head raised--the headaches have almost completely stopped, immediately. the book explains the whys behind it, cranial pressure etc. it certainly worked quickly for me and i was at the point of desperation and prescription painkillers were not working. (i am not a kid but i like my privacy)

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it works
My initial skepticism about this theory did not survive after reading the first few chapters.Disguised as a ridiculously simple lifestyle change, this is a major medical breakthrough.

Like an overwatered houseplant, the brain can suffocate if it's constantly bathed in too much blood and lymph. The connection to Alzheimer's disease and strokes is powerfully suggestive (but will take many years to prove conclusively.)

I'm not going to wait and see.I've been sleeping with my head elevated for a few weeks now and I'm delighted with the results. No more headaches in the morning!I used to get them often and they would last all day.

And when I take a nap now, the transition back to wakefulness is smooth and serene - unlike the sudden shock it used to be.Friends I've suggested this to have had similar results.

Finally, I'd like to commend the authors for their honesty in confronting the medical establishment. Many doctors have known for a long time about the benefits of head elevation to reduce brain edema, but there's no profit in teaching patients how to heal themselves. Simple remedies like this one could put many unscrupulous physicians out of business.

This discovery, combined with the one the authors have made linking bras to breast cancer, make them (at least in my mind) worthy of the Nobel Prize.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny Title - Serious Book
I read this book in connection with my sleep apnea, but also had in mind as I read a friend with migranes. The basic premise is that migranes may be caused by increased pressure in the head that is due to sleeping position (level or single pillow) and that it may be remediable by sleeping with an 8" - 12" wedge under the head-side of the bed.Sounds simple and perhaps too simple but the authors do a good job of explaining their position and showing their rationale, and they also cite a small study they have done that showed very positive results. For persons suffering from migranes that are not well-treated by conventional means, I would certainly recommend this book. The treatment approach is simple and inexpensive, and will not cause any harm if ineffective; if I had migranes I would certainly try it, and I will mention the book to my friend. ... I have been diagnosed with apnea and use a CPAP. I bought four books to gain a deeper insight into my condition. While informative this book does not cover the subject nearly as well as Sleep Apnea - Phantom of the Night. I would not recommend purchase of this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?
This book includes just about everything one needs to know to learn about sleep disorders. It allows you to test yourself at home and explains all of the different "treatments" available. However, none of those treatments boasted any substantial cure rate. The subtitle of the book "A Proven program for conquering snoring and sleep apnea" makes me ask the question "What is the program? Did I miss something?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful.
Thank goodness we were able to stop my husband's snoring.

1-0 out of 5 stars nothing new here
Lose weight, stop smoking, drinking, coffee, become a veggie, yadda yadda. Nothing interesting or new here. I wish I hadn't wasted the money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate Information on Oral Appliance Therapy
Victor Hoffstein, MD, PhD, is truly one of the most respected international authorities in the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. His book "No More Snoring," coauthored with distinguished medical writer Shirley Linde, PhD,covers all that a layman need know about the subject. It is well organized and written to be an easy read. It is accurate and reliable in all areas except treatment with oral appliances.

The information on oral appliances is inaccurate and misleading. For example they classify the Nocturnal Airway Patency Appliance (NAPA) as a tongue retaining device (TRD), which tugs on the tongue all night, and many patients find uncomfortable. The NAPA is definitely not a TRD. It is a mandibular advancement appliance (MAA), which most patients find much more comfortable to wear and more effective.

Then they say the first MAA was used in Germany in 1986.A 1985 report in the New England Journal of Medicine described how a NAPA had reduced the number of stopped-breathing episodes in a middle aged man from 79 per hour to 5 per hour.

As a very important aside, the above mentioned patient received his first NAPA in Honolulu in 1983 and has been wearing one nearly every night for over 17 years. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Was Looking For

Like his earlier book, The Enchanted World of Sleep, (which I found also a captivating read), Restless Nights explains the science of the syndrome, the most current research, implications for public health (such as its impact on transportation safety, work and general quality of life), and proposals for reform of treatment approaches. Most importantly, Lavie discusses the syndrome in the larger context of its impact on general health, particularly cardiovascular disease.
The layperson will find this book readable and engrossing-Lavie's style interweaves scientific information with practical examples, including his historical and literary survey of sleep apnea.Remember Joe from Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers?
The medical professional will also find this book must reading.Recent research-some of it performed and published by Lavie and his Technion colleagues-is beginning to shed light on the connections between sleep apnea and general health.
Lavie is particularly well-qualified to write this book.According to the book, he has helped establish and administer sleep research and treatment centers on several continents, including a group of clinics at major hospitals affiliated with Harvard. He is the past Dean of the Medical Faculty of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.I also know from my past reading that Lavie has also been among the pioneers and leading researchers in sleep medicine for the past quarter century.
I recommend this book highly. ... Read more
