Product Description
Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disease associated with significant morbidity and use of health care resources. Therapy with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices has low risk and a potentially large benefit in treating this disease. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently issued a memo revising their earlier position that authorized payment for CPAP only if formal polysomnography (PSG) was performed and was diagnostic for OSA. The revised memo states that CMS will be pay for CPAP therapy for 12 weeks (and subsequently if OSA improves) for adults diagnosed with either PSG or with unattended home sleep monitoring devices. The use of portable home monitoring devices can greatly increase access to diagnosis and treatment of OSA. However, these devices must be used as part of a comprehensive sleep evaluation program that includes access to board-certified sleep specialists, PSG facilities, and therapists experienced in fitting and troubleshooting CPAP devices.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of 30 minutes and my money!
What a joke of a so-called "book" that took me 30 minutes to read cover-to-cover. It's one of those books that you can buy in volume and re-sell as an "informational guide". It says basically, get diagnosed by a doctor, and get medical treatments of an airway machine or surgery. Very mis-leading. Don't buy! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars sleep apnea
I have been diagnosed with apnea and use a CPAP. I bought four books to gain a deeper insight into my condition. While informative this book does not cover the subject nearly as well as Sleep Apnea - Phantom of the Night. I would not recommend purchase of this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?
This book includes just about everything one needs to know to learn about sleep disorders. It allows you to test yourself at home and explains all of the different "treatments" available. However, none of those treatments boasted any substantial cure rate. The subtitle of the book "A Proven program for conquering snoring and sleep apnea" makes me ask the question "What is the program? Did I miss something?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful.
Thank goodness we were able to stop my husband's snoring.

1-0 out of 5 stars nothing new here
Lose weight, stop smoking, drinking, coffee, become a veggie, yadda yadda. Nothing interesting or new here. I wish I hadn't wasted the money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate Information on Oral Appliance Therapy
Victor Hoffstein, MD, PhD, is truly one of the most respected international authorities in the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. His book "No More Snoring," coauthored with distinguished medical writer Shirley Linde, PhD,covers all that a layman need know about the subject. It is well organized and written to be an easy read. It is accurate and reliable in all areas except treatment with oral appliances.

The information on oral appliances is inaccurate and misleading. For example they classify the Nocturnal Airway Patency Appliance (NAPA) as a tongue retaining device (TRD), which tugs on the tongue all night, and many patients find uncomfortable. The NAPA is definitely not a TRD. It is a mandibular advancement appliance (MAA), which most patients find much more comfortable to wear and more effective.

Then they say the first MAA was used in Germany in 1986.A 1985 report in the New England Journal of Medicine described how a NAPA had reduced the number of stopped-breathing episodes in a middle aged man from 79 per hour to 5 per hour.

As a very important aside, the above mentioned patient received his first NAPA in Honolulu in 1983 and has been wearing one nearly every night for over 17 years. ... Read more

Product Description
Snoring is the effect of strange breathing noises that takes place as you sleep. These noises are due to a difficulty in breathing which is caused when there is blockage to the airways. People who have mild snoring problems do not have sleep disturbances at all. They can snore all through the night while asleep and feel completely rested the next day. Sleep apnea, on the other hand, is a serious health condition, that causes sleep interruption.Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that's closely related to snoring. In sleep apnea, there is a blockage to the throat. The airways completely closed off while you sleep and so the lack of oxygen to the lungs causes you to wake up. If left untreated, sleep apnea can cause serious oxygen deprivation to the body and affect energy levels significantly. People who snore or have sleep apnea may have these signs and symptoms in common:* Snorting or gasping sounds during sleep* Low energy, tiredness, sluggishness* Concentration problems * Difficulties with memory retention* Irritability or being short-temperedIf snoring or sleep apnea is affecting your health and lifestyle to a great extent, then it is best to consult with a doctor to get the right evaluation and treatment immediately. For mild cases, it may only require a few simple changes like losing weight and improving sleeping habits. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars will help you find out the link between snoring and sleep apnea
Through this book I found out that snoring can be an indication of sleep apnea, which can be a life-threatening sleep disorder. It is a good basic guide about the link between the two sleep conditions. It gives information on causes and remedies and cures so you can discover a treatment method that can be effective for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gave me a plan of action to follow as a guide
I found the book full of details on snoring causes and treatment options. I especially like the discussion on the trigger factors because I was made aware of my own actions and lifestyle habits that may be the cause of my snoring. With this book's help, I went into the process of reviewing my lifestyle, jotting down my sequence of actions everyday for a week, established patterns and removed trigger factors. I still snore but not as consistently as before. My wife actually said there was one night I didn't snore at all.It is becoming more irregular as each night progresses. It is no longer straight snoring all throughout the night.I credit this book for providing me with an effective self-help plan of action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner Book!

But the content was easy to understand and was varied in the subject matter enough to know the basics. Excerpt: Sleep apnea (or sleep apnoea in British English) is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. Each episode, called an apnea (Greek: (ápnoia), from - (a-), privative, (pnéein), to breathe), lasts long enough so that one or more breaths are missed, and such episodes occur repeatedly throughout sleep. The standard definition of any apneic event includes a minimum 10-second interval between breaths, with either a neurological arousal (a 3-second or greater shift in EEG frequency, measured at C3, C4, O1, or O2) or a blood oxygen desaturation of 34% or greater, or both arousal and desaturation. Sleep apnea is diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called a polysomnogram, or a "sleep study". Clinically significant levels of sleep apnea are defined as five or more episodes per hour of any type of apnea (from the polysomnogram). There are three distinct forms of sleep apnea: central, obstructive, and complex (i.e., a combination of central and obstructive) constituting 0.4%, 84% and 15% of cases respectively. Breathing is interrupted by the lack of respiratory effort in central sleep apnea; in obstructive sleep apnea, breathing is interrupted by a physical block to ai...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=28445 ... Product Description
Abstract:Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common and debilitating condition characterized by recurrent episodes of upper airway obstruction, resulting in intermittent occurrence of apnea–hypopnea. Clinical features include snoring or disturbed sleep, reduced concentration and memory, mood disorders, and excessive sleepiness (ES). Left undiagnosed and untreated, OSA may have detrimental consequences, including cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality, decreased health-related quality of life, and increased incidence of motor vehicle accidents. As most individuals affected by OSA will initially present in the primary care setting, primary care physicians have the opportunity to recognize the condition and refer patients for treatment when necessary. Management of the condition should include lifestyle changes and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment if required. Wakefulness-promoting agents may be considered if ES persists despite CPAP. Effective intervention for OSA not only provides symptomatic benefits, but also improves hypertension and reduces the risk for fatal and nonfatal CV events associated with the condition.
