5-0 out of 5 stars Quality and Quantity of Life is looking up
This text provided my family and I an alternative treatment outlook for the future of an RA suffer. At my age, 28 the toxic medication on offer from my specialist wasn't appealing. We were able to read and understand the disease better, it's long term impact on our lives and hopefully have found a safe effective alternative treatment. We have nothing to loose.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Got My Life Back, Too!
I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at 33 years old. I grew up very healthy and active. In September 2005, I had my second child, a girl. I was 32 years old. During both pregnancies I had hyperemesis gravidarum, which means extreme nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. In October and November of 2005, I had two root canals (I ruined my teeth from vomiting during pregnancy). My immune system was down because I had just had a baby (the immune system lowers as to not reject the fetus), I was getting very little sleep with a newborn, and I had just had two root canals, the perfect entrance for bacteria. In December 2005, the balls of my feet began to ache. By the beginning of January 2006, I knew something was wrong. I did some investigating later and found out I had a great aunt with Scleroderma and three second cousins with RA. There are also a lot of allergies and asthma in my family, indicating a pattern of hypersensitive immune systems. (I always thought I was the lucky one in the family who didn't get allergies. It seems my allergies have just manifested themselves in a different manner.) About a week later, I was in extreme pain and I had read a lot about RA and knew that my symptoms matched. I referred myself to a local rheumatologist. My pain had spread to over 35 joints. I was having trouble lifting my newborn baby, opening jars, turning car keys, fastening infant seats, putting on my 4-year-old's socks, brushing my teeth, washing my hair, etc. I required at least 12 hours of sleep at night, and was still tired during the day. I was very depressed. I would cry every day, usually out of frustration because I could not undo my seat belt or put on my son's socks for school. Everything that I read said this disease was progressive, degenerative and crippling. I could not imagine it getting any worse than it was! I was referred to [...] by other RA patients. I read and read. I contacted my local area contact. I told him I was considering starting Enbrel the following week. He e-mailed back that I had a choice to make. I could give antibiotics a try and possibly go into remission or get significantly better; or I could go on potentially harmful immune suppressors, which would usually eventually wear off and I would have to jump from one drug to the next. And what would happen if I ran out of drugs to try? He said there is hope in AP. With AP, I had the hope of getting better. With the other drugs, I was merely suppressing the symptoms, not getting to the root cause of the illness. I ordered the book The New Arthritis Breakthrough and started posting on the roadback board. It made much more sense than the conventional autoimmune wisdom which stated that: One random day my immune system just up and decided to attack my joints for no reason at all. I finally came to the conclusion that I did not want to just suppress my pain and symptoms. I wanted my life back. I knew that in the past I always tended to get side effects of medications and I thought I would probably be one of the 1% of people who got lymphoma, TB, or severe infection from the biologics. I knew I wanted to be alive to watch my kids grow up. It was not like I was NOT going to be treating my RA; I would be treating my RA with an American College of Rheumatology approved DMARD. I decided to try the antibiotic protocol. It was the best decision I have ever made. Within 1-2 months of being on Zithromax, the depression and fatigue had disappeared. Within 3 months, I felt 60% better. After 10 months, I was 98% back to my normal self. 18 months later, and I have only one finger that will not bend all the way into a fist (it is about an inch away). My rheumatoid factor has dropped from 282 to 28 and my CCP has dropped from it's all-time high of 153 to 55. My sed rate is 1.0 and my CRP is .3. I walk two miles a day. My feet, neck, knees, ankles, and shoulders do not hurt at all! I thank God, Dr. Thomas McPherson Brown, Henry Scammell,and The Road Back Foundation for giving me my life back!

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Arthritis Breakthrough: etc. by Henry Scammel
This book gives a very clear and concise description of the Marshall Protocol, an anti-biotic based relief program for Auto-Immune disease.

I have given it to my family Doctor to read and he is convinced.

I am starting the protocol as soon as I have a couple of tests undertaken to check for suitability.

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Arthritis Breakthrough: The Only Medical Therapy Clinically Proven to Produce Long-term Improvement and Remission ...
An excellent book for newly diagnosed people with RA who are unaware of alternative treatment available using anti-biotics, instead of current medications perscribed by mainstream doctors, which I believe are destructive to the human body.

Unfortunately doctors do not feel free to administer anti-biotic treatment because it is not approved, yet they can administer drugs that have destructive side effects. I did not feel I could survive the strong drugs being used as the standard of care due to my age. Luckily I found this alternative that has given me hope. Although I have just begun treatment I am experiencing improvement.

The book also has information on The Road Back Foundation, a resource for people affected by arthritis and other diseases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information on Dr. Brown's protocol and beyond
Great information on using tetracyclines for what seems to be "auto-immune" disorders but in reality are mycoplasma infestations. Addresses hard to find topics like whether using tetracyclines for extended periods of times is harmful (it's not) and why, the role of inflammation in the rheumatoid arthritis and why the use of anti-inflammatory drugs doesn't work in a long run, also describes a new approach to very serious cases of arthritis in which corticosteroids are given for a limited time to help lift the walls of inflammation and let tetracycline in for a rapid improvement.

The book doesn't talk much about other auto-immune diseases even though Lupus is mentioned in the title. The book is very readable but does have a bit too much water in it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK FOR THE HEALTH CONSCIOUS IN GENERAL!!!!
Thanks so much for writing your book and making yourself accessible to people all over the world who are seeking help and answers with regard to arthritis.You really helped someone I know both through your book and through your phone consultation with her.

I have read your book and the way you have met adversity in your life is so admirable and inspiring. You, to my eye, are like the phoenix who flew through the ashes.Although I do not have arthritis, I have made a lot positive changes in my diet in large measure due to your book.

I also got tested for food allergies in keeping with the recommendation in your book and now know to avoid peanuts and realize the signs of inflammation that I was experiencing and ignoring every time I ate them.However, since the testing that I had done was not extensive, I will at some point purchase and benefit from the results of the alcat which you recommend in your book and on your website.My understanding is that the alcat tests one not only for antibodies, but also for sensitivities to 150 foods.

Barbara, your book is such a comprehensive guide for people about all of the kinds of things they should know and can do to heal themselves physically, emotionally and spiritually.

I know someone with rheumatoid arthritis and someone with osteoarthritis.Have recommended your book to both of them.

Your book is a blessing to arthritis sufferers and it is so useful as well to those who just want to nurture themselves in the best, most health conscious ways.It contains proactive health tips for any health conscious individual who wants to be sure to consume healthy foods and avoid foods that cause inflammation in their bodies.

Gratefully, Grace

This author has figured out what causes many cases of arthritis.I have osteoarthritis and have been following her recommendations for about a month now.I can already tell a difference in the way I feel.If I cheat, I can really tell the difference the next day.I recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Using The Book
Book was very organized and as a result was clear.The format of explanation and then giving a plan of action was excellent.The only thing it needed to be a 5 Star was a little more humor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
A different theory at what causes arthritis, written by someone who generally cured herself.Talks a lot about food sensitivities that cause arthritis and how to figure out what your food sensitivity so you can avoid or reduce your expose thus feel better.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Type of Arthritis the Author Has Should Be Revealed!
I think this is a good book, but unfortunately, the author's type of arthritis (allergic) is not related to rheumatoid arthritis, which is what my husband has.So, basically, I wasted my money on a book we cannot use. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good useful information, wanders a bit though.
The author has this chatty style of writing,a bit disorganzied, if you ask me, but the information is very useful, and I read and re read many parts of the book.I have had frequent flarups of my psoratic arthritis lately, and the advise in the book has lead me to treatments that have helped me onto the road to recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gout is a form of Arthritis too!!
This book is amazing. I followed the plan and my Gout, the constant pain in my legs and tendonitus all went away within a month. I highly recommend this book no matter what form of Arthritus you have. JUST DO IT! It will not only change your life but give you your life back.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Eat Away Arthritis
I think this is a great book as it has a lot of good information regardingfood intolerances that results in Arthritis and Pain, which I suspected certain foods as a contributing factor and then found this book which confirmed it for me. I liked it so much, I bought three copies to give to my ailing Arthritic Brothers.

4-0 out of 5 stars eat for arthritis
My wife started right away to eliminate some of the triggers that were mentioned in the book. She thought it was a quick read and gave good information.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good contents but not well laid out
The book has excellent information on how to eat, how to fast your way to health, etc.

It's just a pity that the author didn't get assistance with the layout of the book. I really struggled my way through it and also struggle to find information that I want to refer back to. The layout needs to be a whole lot more systematic and logical. ... Read more

From what I have read so far I am finding this book very informative, it is a very good read so far.

The Estrogen Alternative: Natural Hormone Therapy with Botanical Progesterone and Preventing & Reversing Arthritis Naturally: The Untold Story As an educator in the holistic health field who teaches 200-300 new students each year, I try to keep abreast of the vast number of new books that are constantly barraging the health arena. Every year my students ask me to recommend titles in various areas of holistic health and I need to know which select few in each field are the good ones. As both a Naturopath and Board Certified Clinical Nutritionist in private practice, I like to suggest books to my patients which are both informative, accurate, easy to read, and comprehensively cover their topic. Ever since I first discovered Raquel's book The Estrogen alternative , it has been my first choice for books to educate both students and patients on the topic of alternatives to prescription hormone replacement therapy. Well she's done it again. Her new book on natural therapies for arthritis is fantastic. Somehow, Raquel and her co-author, Dr. Karen Romano, have managed to supply the reader with a very useable amount of information in just about every single subject area related to arthritis. This book is an astounding encyclopedia of useable information and it succeeds in making every other book I have read on arthritis unnecessary. This one book has it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural Alternatives
Preventing & Reversing Arthritis Naturally: The Untold Story by Raquel Martin and Dr. Karen Romano explain for us the basic ingredients necessary not only for good health in general, but specifically, for achieving freedom from arthritis.

In the fast-paced, and frequently artificial, lifestyles we live these days, most of us have lost or forgotten the peace, stamina and exuberance of truly healthy bodies and minds. Those "vehicles of the spirit" have become congested, sluggish, and often painful.

Her fascinating description of nutrients, herbs (phytonutrients), exercise, body therapies, stress management and sunlight is thorough, and well documented and referenced. But perhaps her most valuable contribution is the call for courage, personal responsibility and discipline; qualities innate in all of us, that must be nurtured and developed.Her personal experience and example attests to that, and these qualities combined with knowledge can lead any of us back naturally to our birthright of vibrant health.

The concept of natural hormone replacement explained in this book is "an idea whose time has come". It is a vital path to improving health and well-being.

Mrs Martin and Dr. Romano also outlines strategies for making the most of our present medical-pharmaceutical-insurance-system and suggests ideas for compassionately making it better.

I enthusiastically recommend this book, not only for people with arthritis, but for anyone who wishes to explore new ways to achieve optimum health.I also recommend it to my colleagues who would like to learn more about nutrition, phytonutrients and alternative/complementary medicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars title is misleading, but advice is great
The title is unwisely chosen, close to a cheap shot, designed to get the attention of people in pain. This is unfair,and diminishes the total effect of the book, which is well researched and documented for a book for a lay audience. It is very helpful to have all the information on glucosamine and condroitin together, with an exact plan. Very useful is the attention paid to the lack of quality control in choosing nutritional supplements. Dr. Theo provides excellent advice on how to choose wisely, and how to avoid poor or deceptive formulations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me (so far)
Three months ago I was as skeptical as John (below).I have OA in both knees and was contemplating knee replacement surgery.I decided to give this guy's recommendations a chance as a last resort, since my meds weren't helping much.I've been on fairly large doses of glucosamine/chondroitin, ASU, SAMe, and Omega 3-6-9 since around last Thanksgiving.My knee pain has reduced by, I would guess, about 75%.I don't want to over-hype this regimen, and I don't have any idea how long the relief will last.But it's real, and it's substantial.Note that you have to allow a couple of months for it to fully kick in.[...]

The above review was originally written on 2/14/07.As of 6/7/07, I've added the supplement MSM, and the "cocktail" continues to work.I'm still off pain meds except for the occasional ibuprofen.The supplements aren't magic, my knees continue to hurt, but I'm still much closer to pain-free than before I began the regimen.And most importantly, I'm still avoiding the surgeon's knife.~CPW

3-0 out of 5 stars I have doubts about glucosamine + chondroitin
Put it this way, I have joint pain, and I take glucosamine and chondroitin for the pain. But I have my doubts about them, too, especially with regard to the claim that they "rebuild cartilage" (note: I am not a doctor, and I am just a layperson and reader of average knowledge, who has done some reading on this).

Here is what the Mayo Clinic site states about glucosamine and chondroitin (Mayo has one of the top-5 arthritis departments in the country):

"Many manufacturers market dietary supplements that they claim can rebuild cartilage. But little scientific evidence supports this claim. The most studied of these supplements is glucosamine sulfate.

Glucosamine is a natural compound in your body that helps make your cartilage strong and rigid. Osteoarthritis causes the breakdown of joint cartilage and can affect any joint, including the elbow, ankle, wrist and knee. Although there is insufficient evidence that glucosamine rebuilds cartilage, there is some evidence that a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate may relieve moderate to severe pain in some people with osteoarthritis of the knee. The mechanism by which it does this isn't clear."

Some doctors state that glucosamine mimics aspirin and Tylenol, i.e. it is a pain reliever, not a rebuilder of joints.

The book is still good in that it shows the current scientific ideas on how to heal and feel better; but let's not let our hopes of a "holistic cure" get in the way of evidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Theo's glucosamine/chondroitin cure works
I have been investigating health issues for almost 30 years, and Dr. Theo's book is the best one I have read concerning the solution to arthritis.I am also one of the victims of arthritis because I have literally walked or run for thousands of miles in my lifetime.So, my knees and hips need constant attention, and I can personally confirm that glucosamine and chondroitin supplements work.The doctor is right that different brands vary a lot in quality, and I am glad he listed some good brands in his book.He also tells the exact amount of each supplement that you must take in order to get effective results.Although I did not see the GNC brand mentioned in the book, I have found that the GNC chewable Tri-Flex candy supplements work for me.You'll be glad you bought this very informative book if you have arthritis or know someone who does.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have arthritis this book can help
The idea is so simple it is amazing no one thought of it sooner.

Your joints are made up of bones and cartilage. When the cartilage wears down you start getting pain and inflamation.

So when people take the basic building blocks that make up the cartilage, either in supplements or their diet, they body is often able to heal the cartilage. Simple.

Glucosamine, Chondroitin and SAMe are the supplements that Dr. Theo recommends. That is essentially "the cure".

Knox gelatin, that you can find in almost every grocery store in the canning aisle, is also a really great cheap alternative. Knox gelatin is basically ground up cartilage. So it contains everything your body needs to re-build the cartilage.

Many people who take one small package a day and increase their water consumption notice significant decreases in the pain they experience from arthritis pain with in weeks.

Another great book to help you increase your health in other areas of your life is The Creator's Manual for Your Body. It teaches how to know for yourself what is going to make you healty. Everyone is different and this book takes that into account. Plus all the raving 5 star reviews point to the fact that it really does make a difference for people. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really truly helpful!
I suffered for 8 months with inflammatory arthritis in my knees. I saw doctor after doctor, had test after test. The only solution was Celebrex which gave me chest pain. I got this book at our library out of desperation; I felt too young to lose my mobility. I'm thrilled to say these exercises were outstanding and really DO help.
Best of all, the are at least half a dozen helpful exercises for every joint area in the body starting at the top and going down - even the jaw is covered.
My husband started the exercises for back & jaw (he's got TMJ) and they helped him as well.
I can't thank the authors enough for compiling such an honestly helpful book. How refreshing to actually find something that does what it says it does. THANK YOU. I have some relief in life finally.

After checking ARTHRITIS:WHAT EXERCISES WORK out of the library for the third time in a year, I broke down and bought it.It's terrific.The exercises are tied to specific joints, ranging from the small, fingers and toes, on to shoulders, hips, knees, etc.Some you can even do in bed, but many are much more challenging--there is a range.Doing these for just a couple of weeks increased my flexibility tremendously--washing my back, tieing my shoes, and so forth much easier.And I'm a 53 year old professional female who is in "good shape" with aerobics and strength training--but the targeted flexibility/joint exercises here were new to me.I highly, highly recommend. ... Exercise, particularly strength training, can restore function and reduce the pain of arthritis, as Tufts research scientists have discovered. In Strong Women and Men Beat Arthritis, the team of researchers, headed by Miriam Nelson, Ph.D., presents a home exercise program based on a study of 46 people with severe osteoarthritis of the knee. In four months, the group--who exercised in their homes with easy-to-find equipment--reported 43 percent less pain, 44 percent improved function, and 71 percent increased muscle strength.

The 16-week exercise program starts with a daily half-hour of core exercises and adds intensity and additional exercises after the first month. The program combines strength, aerobic, and flexibility exercises, with the main focus on strength training. You'll need dumbbells, ankle weights, and an exercise step (or staircase). Even newcomers to exercise will find the illustrated instructions simple enough and the level low enough to start immediately.

The program includes a nutritional plan to reduce stiffness and inflammation, emphasizing water, fruits, vegetables, and the right fatty acid ratios. The authors also discuss medications (they work best in combination with exercise and nutrition) and sort through alternative treatments.

Nelson is the well-known author of Strong Women Eat Well, Strong Women Stay Young, Strong Women Stay Slim, and Strong Women, Strong Bones. This title is highly recommended for arthritis sufferers who want to improve their quality of life. --Joan Price Book Description

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong Men and Women Beat Arthritis by Dr. Nelson
This is an excellent work on the alternative medicinal and
conventional medicine protocols for arthritis. Dr. Nelson
mentions various Vit C dietary combinations utilizing
orange juice, strawberries or grapefruit to provide Vit. C.
Next, the authors cite important anti-inflammatory combos;
such as, Omega 3 fish oil and flaxseed oil. Sunflower oil
has the requisite Omega 6 ingredients. Sulfasalazine and
methotrexate are important protocols for treating seronegative
spondylarthropathies. In addition, the lungs, heart and eyes
may be impacted by ankylosing spondylitis and related diseases.
For instance, Iritis may impact the eyes. Calcification of
the heart valves and electronic problems with the heart have
been noted. Decreased lung capacity is another important
resultant of ankylosing spondylitis.

The authors point out that Chronic Juvenile Arthritis stunts
growth. In addition, the SED RATE (sedimentation rate) and
rhematoid factor are the gold standard for blood tests to
detect arthritis. In my own experience, the MOST- micro-oxidative
stress test may be helpful in articulating the yeast component
as an aggravating factor in arthritic conditions.

The authors provide an important series of exercises which
may be helpful for arthritic patients. The physical therapy
training consists of moderate squatting, toe stand
(standing erect on your toes), moderate push-ups by pressing
the wall, back extensions by facing the floor and raising the
head, modified sit-ups, knee extension flexing, full range
motion employing light weights in torque motion, face flat on
the floor raising the back legs, the lunge stretch,
cross-over hips, placing one knee on the chair and standing
upright or erect, shoulder stretches and a host of others.
Dr. Nelson indicates that excess joint fluid is a sign of
inflammation. In addition, surgical intervention can be
helpful. For instance, an artificial joint may last 15-20 years.
Acupuncture helps to stimulate endomorphins and change blood
flow patterns. There is evidence that acupuncture relieves
arthritis, although there is less evidence for Chiropractic.
This book is worth the price. It provides important alternative
medicinal protocols for arthritis as well as classic physical
therapy exercises aimed at preserving joint mobility and
elasticity. I would supplement the exercises with Alpha
Lipoic Acid to enhance bodily elasticity. In my own experience,
Northern Polar magnets may be helpful if strategically placed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really seems to help!
I was recently diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis, and I started following the nutritional suggestions in this book. I think it's already starting to help! Plus it tells you how to perform strengthening exercises for your aching joints. I am a big fan of Dr. Nelson's other works. I like how she explains the science and the applications. I plan to share this with my mom, who also has osteoarthritis.

5-0 out of 5 stars No hype, just good, sound information.
I am the kind of person that is not going to buy or "buy into" a book unless it is supported by some reasonable evidence.If you're like me, then you'll love this book.It is based on a study recently conducted at the Tufts University.In short, the study used a program of exercise and nutrition to combat arthritis.The results? Pain was reduced by a whopping 43%!

Key to their program was strengthening exercises which have been shown in other studies as well as being extremely beneficial for arthritis patients.I am very pleased with books like these that offer sound treatments based on research.If you like these kind of books too and also suffer from back pain, I can recommend "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution" (available here at amazon.ca too) that is based on randomized controlled trials and involves only one exercise you do at home that strengthens your multifidus muscles found to be abnormal in many people with back pain.So start reading, start exercising, and start getting better!

5-0 out of 5 stars exercise + diet = controlled arthritis...
...Extremely informative for all, regardless of your health.Miriam Nelson has done it again not only with her easy reading style, but with very educational and informative text. I'm going to send as a gift to a friend. ... Read more

Book Description

A trusted guide and an invaluable resource, Living with Rheumatoid Arthritis offers practical advice for the millions of people coping with this painful disease. Now thoroughly revised and expanded, in a second edition, this book brings readers up to date with the latest methods of diagnosis and treatment.

Building on their accessible explanation of the disease and its causes, the authors describe the essential components of care: medication, joint protection, physical activity, and good nutrition. They provide a wealth of new information on medications, including biologic response--modifiers, alternative and complementary approaches, and treatments for osteoporosis (which often accompanies rheumatoid arthritis), and they describe safe and effective ways to cope with pain, stiffness, and fatigue. The book helps readers understand their own emotional responses, as well as those of family and friends, and, because the disease often entails lifestyle changes, it provides practical advice for achieving as normal a life as possible.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too narrow-minded in its approach
This book provides excellent information about what rheumatoid arthritis is, how to distinguish it from osteoarthritis, etc.

However, I don't want to live with RA, I want to recover from it. As such, this book offers no help in this regard. It tells me about drugs that I can take and splints that I can wear to help me from becoming completely disabled, but offers me no hope of recovery.

In contrast, the book "Conquering Arthritis" by Barbara Allan, is the well-researched account of someone who took charge of their health and fought to recover from the disease, to get their life back. And succeeded! I'm well on the road to recovery myself by applying the principles in her book. Now that's a book well worth spending your money on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction to this disease
I was diagnosed with RA in December and picked this book up soon after.It gives lots of information about the course of the disease, medications, exercises and diet.I've loaned it to family members and reference it whenever I have a question about what my body is doing.The only drawback is that medications are developing at such a fast rate, that the book is already a bit outdated after only 3 years.However, it is still a great starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a work of superb medical scholarship
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Living With Rheumatoid Arthritis by Tammi L. Shlotzhauer (Clinical Instructor of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center and Practicing Rheumatologist at Rheumatology Associates of Rochester) and James L. McGuire (Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, Massachusetts) is a large print compendium of the latest information on Rheumatoid Arthritis concerning the diagnosis, treatment, and daily life (from special diets to possible alternative therapies and more) with this troublesome and painful disease. Living With Rheumatoid Arthritis informatively presents its facts in terms and text ideal for the non-specialist general reader, yet without glossing over specific issues, problems, medicines, or other challenges facing rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. Simply put -- this is a work of superb medical scholarship and Living With Rheumatoid Arthritis should be on the shelves and available to the patrons of every community library system in this country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!
This book gives a lot of layman explanations to medical technical jargon that the doctors throw at new patients. At times the reading was a bit dry, but this book serves as a daily reference to me with the many challenges I face as a newly diagnosed RA patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete guide to Rheumatoid Arthritis
This book covers all aspects of this disease and is written by a practicing Rheumatologist.RA is considered one of the "inflammatory" forms of arthritis and is now generally consideredan autoimmune disease.Topics covered in depth include what joints arecommonly affected, other organs that may also be involved and some of theother complications that may be experienced.The testing commonlyperformed by Physicians is discussed at length and explained in lay terms. The general progression of the disease differs in different individuals andthis is discussed as well. The treatments such as medications, therapy,surgery are discussed individually and in depth in lay terms.Exercise isalso covered.Some other aspects that are discussed are emotional issuesand disability.This book actually presents a solid in depth knowledge ofthe diease and contains a lot of information that many family practionersand generalist may not be aware of as they are not specialists in thisdisease process.This book should be read and owned by anyone with thisdisease or a loved one with this disease.All of the information ispresented in lay terms that are easy to understand.There are numerousillustrations as well. ... This is one of the best books on rheumatoid arthritis that I've seen.I usually scan a few pages to get a feel for how the information is presented, and more times than not, I find it's either over my head, poorly organized, or both.Not the case with this book!There's an absolute wealth of information in this book that's both well-presented and easy to understand. A revolutionary three-part approach, the Arthritis Rx plan details:

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but I still have my doubts
First off let me say that this is the most optimistic book on this "disease" that I know of. The author seems highly qualified and really knows his subject.

I have joint pain (hip and knee), and I take glucosamine and chondroitin for the pain. It seems to help. However, I have my doubts that these things "build" or "rebuild" cartilage. One orthopedic surgeon in L.A. wrote that there is no evidence that they build or rebuild it, and that from what he read, glucosamine only "mimics" Tylenol on a molecular level, so if you take it, the pain is less, but it is the same as taking an aspirin. Trust me, I would love to believe that these things actually rebuild my knees and restore cartilage, but like I said, I have real doubts about that now. Chondroitin - I have read and heard from doctors - cannot penetrate the stomach wall, and there is no way it can reach the joints, from what I read. Most Glucosamine studies are either too limited, or are from Europe from long ago, so it is highly doubtful if they are good studies. I looked up ginger on the Mayo clinic website, and it stated that ginger is not proven as a cure for arthritis, but some limited trials suggest it might help (Mayo has one of the best rheumatology and arthritis departments in the world). It gave the studies that show ginger helps against joint inflamation/pain only a "B", i.e., there is some evidence, but it is not iron-clad, that it works (but there is no evidence that it does any harm, either).

But I want to make it very clear that I am not a doctor or scientist, and so what I am relating here should be viewed as that of a moderately-well informed reader who is not a doctor. All I am doing is relating some doubts that I have read from doctors in this field, after doing some research into this.

I like the exercises and the general discussion of arthritis in this book. I would still highly recommend this book. It is one of the more optimist books on the subject, too. I like the book. I even bought the pills the doctor sells, Zingerflex, and I take them every day. They DO reduce my subjective pain, too. I have almost no knee issues now. However, like I said, I would treat glucosamine and ginger as pain reducers that are safer than other pain reducers, but I don't think chondroitin works, from my layman's reading on that, and I think ginger might work, or might not. Most doctors view glucosamine as effective at reducing pain.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK if you ignore some parts
I thought the majority of the book was very helpful.However, I was very upset that the authors decided to include some of their political views in the book - in particular I am referring to the statement that individuals consuming more than a certain amount of healthcare are unethical - ie: using biological response modifiers such as Enbrel.I hope that readers will recognize that this is just the authors' opinion - not a fact.Many people in the healthcare industry, including myself disagree with this statement.If you need biologicals, take them!

******************************

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE CONSULTING YOUR DOCTOR!

******************************

A research scientist and former arthritis sufferer outlines a proven treatment that could banish your arthritis pain forever. This well-documented study presents evidence that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other chronic illnesses are caused by microbial infection. When the infection triggers allergic reactions, it appears that the body's immune system has turned on itself. Once the cause of the infection and allergies are identified and removed, arthritis symptoms will decrease and likely disappear as long as the body's collective systems remain in balance.

********************************

IN THIS BOOK YOU WILL DISCOVER:

-- Actions of microorganisms that cause RA-mycoplasmas, mycobacteria, molds, spirochetes (e.g., Lyme), viruses, bacteria and their L-forms;
-- Their role in other chronic illnesses with arthritis-like symptoms such as Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome;
-- Online authoritative medical information and support organizations;
-- The best Internet sites to research health, drugs, treatments, and disease;
-- What diagnostic tests are available and where to get them;

AND LEARN WAYS TO:
-- Recognize and suppress pathogenic microorganisms;
-- Destroy or eliminate the toxins they produce;
-- Control the allergies that trigger RA reactions;
-- Strengthen the immune system using natural, non-toxic methods;
-- Locate a health care professional to work with you.

*********************************

Conventional RA treatments include toxic drugs that reduce painful symptoms but do not treat the root cause, namely, bacterial infection. An immune system weakened by drugs (e.g., antidepressants or antihistamines), improper diet, stress, and multiple infections is unable to produce the quantity and quality of natural antibodies to stave off new attacks. This book describes the steps necessary to:

-- Identify, attack, and remove the cause(s) of the infection(s);
-- Neutralize pathogen-generated wastes (toxins and harmful enzymes);
-- Flush these wastes from the body; and
-- Restore the body's systems to normal, healthy function.

*******************************

Until recently, testing methods to identify these microorganisms precisely and to prescribe effective treatments have not been available. Traditional treatments with immunosuppressing drugs often breed stronger, more resistant bacterial organisms, which mutate and grow, overwhelming the immune system's resources. Undiagnosed food and chemical allergies can also amplify the severity of arthritis symptoms. In this book, both the lay reader and physician will find an effective course of treatment possibly leading to a cure for RA and other chronic illnesses with arthritis-like symptoms. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of valuable information
In this excellent book, Dr. Poehlmann explains how germs trigger the so-called autoimmune diseases where our immune systems seem to be attacking us. She focuses on rheumatoid arthritis, but the book also covers related illnesses such as fibromyalgia, lupus, Lyme disease, multiple sclerosis, reactive arthritis, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Rheumatoid Arthritis discusses many pathogens, especially cell-wall deficient bacteria such as Mycoplasma. An appendix written by Dr. Joseph Mercola describes a protocol for eradicating the germs associated with rheumatic diseases. Other appendices discuss supplements, nutrition for patients with chronic illnesses, and websites where more information can be found.
If I have a complaint about Rheumatoid Arthritis, it is that there is so much good information in it that I had to highlight or dog-ear nearly every page in my copy. Russ Farris, co-author of The Potbelly Syndrome: How Common Germs Cause Obesity, Diabetes, And Heart Disease

Very usefull for people who need to know about those subjects. Easy to understand!

It did help me a lot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for the authors and this book!
I was given this book by one of its authors (Dr. Stulberg) as part of the pre-op regimen. I was 45 when my hip was replaced by Dr. Stulberg. I was back to work in about 6 weeks and still feel great today, 5 years later, praise God; (I even cycle/commute over 20 miles)...while some ortho docs didn't offer me any hope of regaining my 100% of normal; only a lot of limitations, S. D. Stulberg gave me hope; the Lord gave me healing!

I credit this book with giving me the knowledge I needed to face this surgery with the right attitude. I'm a big coward and this book helped me alot. Need a hip?...go to a surgeon who won't give you a lot of heavy MD lingo and instead listens to and answers your questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I bought this book prior to hip surgery.It saw me all the way through the process, and I'm now doing the recommended exercises.I've had a super fast recovery, and credit the book so much that I purchased two more for my hippy friends.

2-0 out of 5 stars alternative to hip replacement surgery
I was looking for a book to guide me in postponing or avoiding hip replacement surgery.The title "The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge"prompted me to buy this book, but I was disappointed in the book because so little of it was devoted to really taking charge of your physical situation so that you can strengthen your hip and achieve its maximum flexability.A better choice for those wishing to do everything in their power to avoid or postone surgery would be Dr. Klapper's book, "Heal Your Hips", which is also available from Amazon.com

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have
if you have arthitis of the knee or hip, this book is a must have. i had a total hip replacement four weeks ago, and this book was my pre and post op bible. the o.t. at the hospital saw me reading it and asked to borrow it. it will now be standard reading for all of her patients.
there are advances in joint surgery that have occurred since the book was published, but the general information is excellent. my new hip is ceramic on ceramic through an "anterior approach". at the time of publication, the author mentions both as future improvements. however, the pre and post op preparation, the patient experiences, and the overall handling of the subject are worth the price of admission. ... I like the book, even though there are things I dont agree with.I'm trying this treatment and hope it wil work.What I ask myself if they're still in use or they proved wrong presently.

This book saved my life! I highly reccomend it! 20 yrs ago when I was 30 I could barely walk. I was always in so much pain... every dang joint in my body! Now I am totally healthy at 50!!! The book does talk about exercise...not to do it unless your joints are oiled!! It would be like starting a car without oil...the moving parts would be damaged. Exercise when you're healed! Follow the guidelines in this book & your joints will be oiled! It worked for me! I just wonder where I would be today without my dad giving me this book 20 yrs ago.

Whether or not his theories are scientifically correct, the advice in this book produces great results.

When my grandfather wrote this book, my mother was just two years old.I know a lot has changed in the world of medicine and scientific discovery has improved all of our lives, but one constant remains, nothing is better for preventing a problem or solving one than good common sense.My grandfather was well ahead of his time, his theories teach people that a simple solution is often times the best solution.Now almost 50 years later, evidence and testimonials have proven him to be right, and because it is in all of our best interests to protect our joints and our bodies, take this book home and read through it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Old and In the Way!
I'm not sure the text has been updated since the original copyright in 1954. Certainly the current nutritional advice is at odds with much of what this simplistic book recommends. And it doesn't even mention exercise! Common sense tells me to take advantage of more recent scientific studies of arthritis. ... Read more
