Book Description
The only arthritis guide you'll ever need-from the author of the landmark health classic Sinus Survival.

Arthritis can be healed. But the healing will not arise from adopting a single miracle treatment or taking a magical herb or pill. Living successfully with arthritis can be achieved by the simple, committed lifestyle changes and combination of healthful natural and traditional treatments explored in easy-to-understand detail in Robert S. Ivker's Arthritis Survival.

The twenty-one million Americans who suffer from osteoarthritis are often also suffering from unhealthy nutritional, physical, and even emotional lifestyles. Yet too frequently they are told simply to reach into their medicine cabinet for a cure. While conventional medicine plays an invaluable role in alleviating the symptoms of this disease, the Arthritis Survival program will help readers truly relieve their pain and replace it with a feeling of wellness and hope.

In meticulous and easily understood detail, Arthritis Survival begins with a "quick fix" guide that outlines the herbs, vitamins, and other substances that can begin to relieve pain right away. Dr. Ivker then lays out a program of lifestyle changes-from exercise, to eating choices, to emotional factors-that will help readers to gain mastery over arthritis. He provides specific recipes for healthful eating, a wellness self-test, and an extensive guide to resources that will allow readers to further shape their own arthritis survival program. Resource guide. Index. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terribly written book with no basis in scientific fact.
I have finished reading half of this book...so far.It is NOT well-written by any means. She does not give you a solid plan to follow, just a very rough idea of what she did, but without any back-up to why the things that helped her worked. She basically expects you to become a vegetarian, and even suggests eating tomatoes, potatoes, and other well-known trigger foods that cause arthritis sufferers a lot of pain!

Other than telling you to eat a bunch of fruits and vegetables, all she says about eating any other foods is exactly the following, "Dairy foods and meats are the culprits, stay away."It's not even a proper sentence! She doesn't even say anything more about this, such as WHY dairy foods are bad, WHICH meats are bad and why, and what does she have to back this up?She later states she has an ALLERGY to beef. From what I've read in other books on arthritis, food intolerances make-up a large part of the problem for arthritis sufferers. This is the case with my husband, who has NO allergies to any foods or anything else (we had him do the full allergy prick test along with allergy blood tests - they came up with nothing). But he absolutely has food intolerances, which are completely different than food allergies (what I have).

She also writes as if she is talking at you - she tells you, "Read about vitamins, try to find a doctor who treats with Orthomolecular method."Again, not a proper sentence. Also, instead of telling us what vitamins help with arthritis sufferers and what vitamins may harm them, she has us pay good money for HER book so that she can tell us to go read some other book.Ridiculous! And she doesn't mention ANYTHING about "Orthomolecular method" prior to or after the aforementioned sentence.

I don't think I will bother reading the rest of the book, as nothing in it thus far has been based on any form of scientific fact, has nothing / no research to back it up, and is really all hearsay.I may finish reading it on the slim chance it could have something useful in it that could help my husband. But that's also because I already bought it.I bought it used for about $3 and paid the $3.50 shipping, and I STILL feel like I've been ripped off!If you ARE going to try it, don't you DARE pay the $29.95 price tag I've seen.I also bought, "Conquering Arthritis - What Doctors Won't Tell You Because They Don't Know!" by Barbara Allen.Although her "reviews" for her book on Amazon need to be deleted since they are NOT reviews, but are in fact written by a bunch of people who know her personally telling you how great she is rather than by people who actually read AND used her book, after finishing Chapter 1 I am already impressed.Of course, I haven't gotten that far, but it is already obviously a well-written book filled with research, facts, and proof to back up the statements she gives.Nothing like this stupid book's lines like, "Eat at least two salads daily, two helpings of steamed vegetables, brown rice, or potatoes. (They are not fattening.) Lentils or Chinese vegetables, grains and fruits."My!!! What a feast.""And no, I did not change the punctuation. She actually puts random sentences inside parenthesis and says condescending phrases like, "My!!! What a feast."Lines like these are all over this book. And since when are potatoes, particularly regular brown, Russett potatoes, not fattening and good for you?!These are well-known to raise your blood sugar levels much the same as when you eat white bread!

Anyway, I could go on and on with quoting and bashing this book, but I think I'll instead just read the OTHER book I bought by Barbara Allen. For this book I paid the Amazon price of about $24, and it is SO MUCH BETTER than the $3 I threw out on this piece of garbage!

1-0 out of 5 stars It's ok, but...
Not at all what I expected.A very OLD book. The date of it should be more prominent when advertising it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding presentation and great ideas. It works!!
This is an outstanding book with practical ideas and suggestions for curing, or substantially easing, the pain and stiffness from arthritis. I have suffered from arthritis for 20 years, taking many pain medications which only controlled, not eliminated the pain. After 4 months of following the instructions and diet, I realized the pain was virtually gone! It was a slow easing that was nothing short of a miracle. My doctor was skeptical that it would work, but said why not try it. It does work. Give it a try. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Approach with Caution!
There is a seed of truth in the claims made in this book,
but a wise consumer should know a few things about flax and
particularly flax seed oil before adopting the suggestions
made here.

Flax seeds are a pretty good addition to a diet. They have
a wonderfully nutty taste that adds character to baked goods
and hot cereal. They are very high in soluble fibre and can
be toasted in a skillet or incorporated in the crust of breads.

* flax seed meal goes rancid easily. you can tell if rancidity
has set in by a slightly bitter taste to the meal. The best
way to incorporate flaxin your diet is to buy fresh whole
seeds from a source that turns them over frequently and grind
them yourself.(a small electric coffee grinder that you can buy
on Amazon will do the trick.) Flax seed oil is even more
perishable.

* the fatty acids in flax are no substitute for the EFA's in
fish or fish oil. The ratio of 3's to 6's is way too low and
research has established that most of us do not convert one to
the other.

* when you first start to add flax to your diet, be sure to
drink a lot of water.

the forthcoming novel bang BANG from Kunati Books.ISBN

4-0 out of 5 stars To the point
This book cuts through a lot of the nonsense making flax and it's benefits clearly understood. I like the fact that I could open the book at any page and just begin reading. I'm certainly a Flax fan now!!

This book is great. Hard to believe from a nutrition book, but this one becomes a pager turner. Once I started reading about all the great benefits of flax, I just wanted to find out about everything it has to offer. This book is full of great research, but you don't have to be a doctor to read it.
The best part is, once you decide to started using flax, there are a bunch of great recipes right at your fingertips. I've tried several of the salad dressings and so far I love them all. ... Read more
