5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read and It Worked
Dr. Irwin's approach to arthritis is just what I was looking for.He starts out recommending a natural approach, diet. This includes: identifying food allergies and adding vitamins, minerals, and supplements like fish oils or condroitin. If that doesn't work he recommends a more and more "medical" approach starting with hormones (which are already found in the body). If hormones don't work he has a new drug concept that nobody seems to have though of.What I like about this approach is that Dr. Irwin recommends the "natural" treatment first, diet. I also liked the way he wrote. I felt he was speaking directly to me and revealing much about himself in the process. This made his book very readable and helped me embrace the changes I needed to make.By following his diet recommendation, I have greatly reduced my arthritis pain. Previously, I often had sharp pain when I stepped on my clutch (good thing I have a motorcycle for those days) or used certain shoes. Now it is only mild discomfort and that is on the bad days. Yepeee!Perhaps, someday, I will have to try Dr. Irwin's more aggressive approaches, but I'm already very happy with my current results.

Book Description
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease, which affects 1% of the world's population. Patients with RA not only have a progressive and debilitating disease and severe functional impairment, but can also experience a reduced life expectancy due to frequent involvement of the major organ systems. This new edition of Rheumatoid Arthritis charts the profound changes in research and patientmanagement that have taken place over the last 5 years. Developments in molecular biology have dramatically increased insight into the inflammatory and destructive pathways of this complex disease. Over half a million patients have been successfully treated with biologic therapy and advances in imaging techniques have allowed increasingly early detection of disease onset. Rheumatoid factor is no longer the unchallenged gold standard autoantibody but has competition from the anti-citrulline antibodies. Environmental factors influencing both susceptibility and progression have been sought, and smoking has emerged as a powerful factor. Steady progress in genetics is finally being made and one day it may be possible to predict RA before onset of symptomatic disease. It is against this backdrop of dynamic developments that the new edition of Rheumatoid Arthritis publishes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Real breakthrough about arthritis and it works
This is an interesting book with chapters interleaved with thoery and reallife cases studies.Doctor Thomas Mc Pherson explain the causes of thearthritis and it's mode of treatement. He also talks about the actualresearch approches of the treatement of the disease. His approch isdifferent. If we summarize, arthritis is an infection related disease, that can be cured by a simple antibiotic (monocyclin) a derivative oftetracyclin. Both antibiotics can be used for the treatment. He explainsthat a common bacteria (mycoplasm) that live in everybody may outgrownormal levels and trigger immune reaction that is misinterpreted as anautoimmune disease. He give also many evidences for its theory.Duringhis years of pratice doctor Thomas McPherson Brown cured thousands ofpatients of this terrible disease.

I wanted to submit this review becausewe convinced an arthritis specialist to apply this approch to a relative atan advanced stage of arthritis. This relative was illed since many years. Within an year the disease completly disappear from the body of thisperson.Blood tests show today that there is no more arthritis.

Manyinterests are reluctant to caution this approch. In some way this an idealdisease for a pharmaceutics company.A disease that is considereduncurable, and for which you are condamned to take forever drugs that aremore expensive as the disease progress. Many searchers who investigate theautoimmune theory and worked in that direction for years are reluctant toconsider that there is a such easy solution to this problem.

I wouldheartily recommend this book to anyone who has this disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book in its field.
Not only have I read this book, I have used its remedy. In July, 1996 Iwas diagnosed with Lyme Disease, then later with rheumatoid arthritis.Iwas treated for Lyme Disease for about 45 days (which has similarsymptoms). Then my husband found The Arthritis Breakthrough book at ourlocal Waldenbooks.Once I read the book, it was just a matter of findingsomeone who would try the treatment according to the book.I couldn'tbelieve how difficult this was!Rheumatologists are not conditioned tothink "cure", they think "symptomatic".Therefore, even though the treatment is so low risk, nobody I called wanted to listen. Depending on the severity of the disease, the book recommends a beginninglow dose of minocycline and anti-inflammatory.Since I was diagnosedearly, I began 50mg, 3X per week and and anti-inflammatory daily. After 3mos., I discontinued the anti-inflammatory and began taking Aleve as Ineeded it.Over the span of the last 18 mos., the minocyline has beenincreased gradually to the dose I take now of 200mg, 4X a week.I expectto be cured by this November. Before this book, I could barely walk. Now Iam back to a normal life of golf, gardening, swimming, etc.If I couldgive this book 10 stars, it certainly deserves it!It has changed my life. ... Amazon.com
More than 43 million people of all ages in the U.S. suffer from arthritis, an often disabling disease for which conventional medicine offers only limited relief from pain--and no cure. Arthritis patients are increasingly seeking alternative therapies, yet these have their drawbacks, too: though some have proven benefits, many others are expensive and work for only some, others are useless, and some are dangerous. This book aims to be a "common-sense guide through the maze of the most-used complementary therapies for arthritis, to help you choose wisely among the many options available," and it succeeds beautifully. The book lists 22 complementary therapies, from familiar ones like acupuncture, meditation, tai chi, and yoga, to less accepted treatments like copper bracelets, magnets, and bee stings (don't worry, the book isn't recommending this, only providing information). The "Nature's Medicines" section discusses more than 40 herbs and supplements.

The book describes each therapy and how it is used, presents scientific evidence and expert opinion, and gives tips on how to find a practitioner and information on costs, advice, cautions, and resources in a helpful and reader-friendly style. There are also guidelines for working with your doctor, choosing a therapist, and avoiding rip-offs. Author Judith Horstman, a two-time Fulbright Scholar and award-winning editor of Arthritis Today magazine, makes the point that complementary therapies cannot "cure" arthritis or replace proven medical treatments. They can, however, ease symptoms and improve your outlook, and may even enhance the effects of your conventional treatment. This is an extremely useful and beautifully illustrated book for arthritis sufferers seeking to expand their treatment as informed consumers. --Joan Price Book Description

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice overview of all the alternative therapies.
Nice graphics and type. Treats all therapies evenly. Basic info across all spectrums, including what to expect at your first acupuncture session, what naturopathy is, and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Separates hype from hope, again and again
When this book was first released, I gave a copy to my 75-year-old mother, who has osteoarthritis. Over and over, she's told me about consulting this book when trying to decide whether or not to try some remedy that a friend has suggested. She feels that it has kept her from spending a fortune on snake oil, and has made her bold enough to try alternative approaches that have been helpful, such as glucosamine-chondroitin supplements. Obviously it was the perfect gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide For Anyone, Traditional or Nontraditional
I found this book very helpful in making sense out of the confusing array of alternative therapiesout there these days.Ms. Horstman provides a no-nonsense overview of many traditional healing techniques, together with a comprehensive bibliography and medical references. The organization of the book makes it very easy to use, too. Overall, this book shows a high level of qualityon all levels, and is a valuable resource for thoseof us in search of health and healing!

Book Description
"This splendid volume is easily understandable, uses real-life situations as examples and is far more up-to-the-minute than other such books. From sexuality to surgery, it offers practical and science-based advice."--Charles M. Plotz, M.D., Editor-in-Chief, Rheuma21st.com

Your complete guide to understanding and living well with rheumatoid arthritis

If you or someone close to you suffers from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), this book is a powerful tool you don't want to be without. Two of the authors are physicians at the Hospital for Special Surgery, one of the nation's oldest and best orthopedic research hospitals. Its purpose is to arm you with the information you need to take charge of your disease management and work with your doctors to develop a treatment program that's right for your lifestyle and life goals.

In plain English, the authors demystify rheumatoid arthritis-its causes, progression, and various effects on the human body-and decode the often perplexing language that doctors use to describe RA and its diagnosis and treatment. They explain the various treatment and pain management options available to you and ways to discuss them with your doctor. The authors also include the true stories of RA patients whose tales offer encouragement and powerful insights for dealing with the difficult psychological and lifestyle issues RA sufferers face. Their expert advice and guidance covers a range of topics of vital concern to people affected by RA, including:

  • Old, new, and emerging drug therapies, including gold, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants
  • Analgesics and anti-inflammatories
  • Alternative treatment strategies
  • Nutrition, diet, and exercise for RA

5-0 out of 5 stars Rheumatism ArthritisHandbook by Paget et al.
This is an excellent reference work for the arthritic ailments.
The authors indicate some basic principles for patients to
follow in pursuing a successful treatment regimen:
1- be well informed about the disease and the process of disease
2- have a good rapor with the respective physicians on the case
3- assemble a medical team
4- select team members of physicians carefully

There are some supportive therapies for the arthritic diseases.
These are exercise, heat and cold application, as well as,
acupuncture. Surgery may be a good resort for hip, knee or
hand repair. Stretching exercises are helpful in achieving
a wider range of motion in the disease process. A good diet
consists of approximately 55% carbs; 20% protein and 25% fats.
Fish oil-particularly omega 3 can be helpful in dealing with
physical fatigue and joint tenderness. The work is written
for the layperson. It is easy to understand and apply.

I was diagnosed with RA recently after suffering with its symptoms for probably 8 years. I knew nothing about Rheumatoid Arthritis before this and never even considered it a cause of my pains. I am currently under the care of a Rheumatologist at the Hosiptal for Special Surgery. This book has been a tremdous help in conjunction with my doctor in understanding the problem.

The book takes a very thorough look at the Rheumatoid Arthritis - diagnosing it, what kind of questions to ask, causes, treatments, therapy, useful outside resources, and examples of others with RA.

So far this book has been very helpful, especially with various issues that affect people with RA.It is up-to-date on the pharmaceutical options for the treatment of RA.A good general guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book out there.
I've been very disappointed in the quality of books out on the market about inflammation disesases such as RA. This is the only one I would recommend. It has all the info you need, neatly laid out with great, easy-to-read graphics. Definately 5 stars! Also look for their book on Alternative Therapies. Buy extra copies for your family/friends so they understand what you're going through.

If you or a family member or a close friend has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, this is the book to read. It explains the various aspects of the disease, what one can expect to happen, how to cope with the pain and how to organize your life in order to minimize the stress the disease can cause. The book does not candy-coat the disease, but does show how it can be managed. It explains the different drugs that are available to help and it explains their side-effects, also. 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This book is a large-scale study of arthritis which can serve as a catalog of arthritis treatments available. For each treatment, the book states what percentage of patients got better, showed no improvement, or felt worse. Also shows symptoms for each type of treatment.Ironically, exercise turned out to be one of the safest and most effective way to deal with arthritis. This book discusses drugs, surgery, various categories of medical professionals, and traditional and some alternative approaches.A great gift for friends who have arthritis but don't know what to do about it.
