Product Description
With special attention to the most common forms of arthritis--osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout--The Arthritis Healthy Exchanges Cookbook offers sound advice and recipes that will help anyone suffering from arthritis to get the maximum benefits from a nutritional program.

Because there is no one diet prescription that is right for every person with arthritis, the most important aspect of the Healthy Exchanges approach is to achieve a well-balanced diet that encourages variety and moderation. The Healthy Exchanges program recognizes that certain kinds of foods (and food allergies in some people) may heighten symptoms and that the inclusion of appropriate levels of vitamins and minerals in the diet will promote overall health, so all the recipes are designed with these factors in mind. From tasty appetizers to hearty main dishes to delicious desserts, this collection carries all the hallmarks of JoAnna Lund's recipes that her fans have come to expect: quick and easy to prepare using easy-to-find ingredients, guaranteed to be low in fat, calories and cholesterol and high in taste.Along with recommendations for regular exercise and other reasonable lifestyle changes, the Healthy Exchanges program can help anyone take an active and positive role in their own well-being. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kept secret for Arthritis
This book helped me so much.My Rheumatologist prescribed hydroxycholoroquine for my arthritis about 5 years ago.I had it so bad I could hardly walk.I could not bend my wrists or ankles.I was in so much pain. But the drug required that I see an opthomologist twice a year because there was a rare chance it could blind me!I didn't like the sound of that, so I sought alternatives.I found this book and followed the instructions the best I could. Now I am nearly pain free- have been for about 5 years - and I take absolutely no drugs for my arthritis! This book is a Godsend!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have arthritis you need this book....
I was given this book at 18 years of age. I had been suffering from RA for the previous 7 years. At that point in my life I thought everything was hopeless, I'd never be able to work, no one would ever want to marry me and I would end up alone and in pain for the rest of my life.

Needles to say none of this happened. This book changed my life.
I put put heart and soul into following the recommendations and within a couple of weeks I went off the meds (much to my dr's disapproval mind you!) and have not looked back since. I have not had a flare up in 15 years.

This is my fifth time ordering this book (though up till now I have had to get it from AMazon UK)Not for myself but to give to others.I have even bought a copy for my doctor! No one should have to suffer needlessly and I really believe if there is anything you can do toimprove things you owe it to yourself to give it your best shot.I cringe everytime I hear someone say there is no cure for arthritis because it is simply not true.

I cannot recommend this book high enough, it is well written and simply makes sense.I hope that it helps you as much as it did me.

Best of luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars Tasty Recipes
Overall this book was very helpful. Most of the recipes are quite tasty, (something that other arthritis cookbooks often lack.) As a beginner arthritis-friendly cook, I found that some of the ingredients called for are a bit obscure, and occasionally pricey, but in general it was a worthwhile investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good General Guide to RA
So far this book has been very helpful, especially with various issues that affect people with RA.It is up-to-date on the pharmaceutical options for the treatment of RA.A good general guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book out there.
I've been very disappointed in the quality of books out on the market about inflammation disesases such as RA. This is the only one I would recommend. It has all the info you need, neatly laid out with great, easy-to-read graphics. Definately 5 stars! Also look for their book on Alternative Therapies. Buy extra copies for your family/friends so they understand what you're going through.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must
If you or a family member or a close friend has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, this is the book to read. It explains the various aspects of the disease, what one can expect to happen, how to cope with the pain and how to organize your life in order to minimize the stress the disease can cause. The book does not candy-coat the disease, but does show how it can be managed. It explains the different drugs that are available to help and it explains their side-effects, also. There are helpful hints to diet and exercise, as well. I found this to be a very important book for me because it gave me the ground-work for dialog with my doctor. I am glad I found this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kids with Arthritis
Arthritis is a debilitating, painful and progressive disease.Juvenile forms of arthritis are just as virile, often stunting growth and robbing youngsters of their childhood physicality. The effect on families is often devastating. No one seems to know that arthritis so profoundly affects over 300,000 children in America alone.

Kelly Rouba has written a book to give young people and their families the skills and information they need to more effectively deal with their arthritis. This book should be automatic reading for every family with a child diagnosed with juvenile arthritis. The author, herself a victim of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis since the age of 2, gives families hope with her thorough discussion of arthritis research underway.Ms. Rouba is a national spokesperson for the Arthritis National Research Foundation, advocating for young arthritis patients, to increase public awareness of juvenile arthritis and the critical need for research.I applaud Kelly's wonderful gift of this book -- families across the country will benefit immensely. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for the Arthritic Dog Owner
This is a great book for the arthritic dog owner. It is very thorough and investigates ALL of the solutions for dogs with arthritis and other diseases, such as Canine Hip Dysplasia. It talks about maintaining the dog's quality of health by holostic means, rather than the ever popular NSAIDS such as Rimadyl/Estogesic, which have been known to have a lot of side effects. But it also investigates the NSAIDS.The book is not one-sided, but gives open information about all possible routes that can be taken to maintain a dog with arthritis.I have read a lot of books about this topic, but this is one of my top picks. It delivers a lot of information in a clear manner, then lets the reader decide for her/his self what are the best solutions for their individual dog.I enjoyed this book most because of its thoroughness.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is facing anytype of joint complications with their dog. ... This is a thorough, complete guide of the most-usedunconventional therapies and the scientific research that supports ordispels any claims, myths or hype associated with them. You can learnthe latest about herbs, acupuncture, diet, exercise, tai chi, magnets, movement therapies, spiritual healing, mind/body therapies, and more. You'll also learn what to expect from these treatments, how much theycost and how to find a qualified practitioner.Amazon.com Review
More than 43 million people of all ages in the U.S. sufferfrom arthritis, an often disabling disease for which conventionalmedicine offers only limited relief from pain--and no cure. Arthritispatients are increasingly seeking alternative therapies, yet thesehave their drawbacks, too: though some have proven benefits, manyothers are expensive and work for only some, others are useless, and some are dangerous. This book aims to be a"common-sense guide through the maze of the most-used complementarytherapies for arthritis, to help you choose wisely among the manyoptions available," and it succeeds beautifully. The book lists 22complementary therapies, from familiar ones like acupuncture, meditation, tai chi, and yoga, to less accepted treatments like copperbracelets, magnets, and bee stings (don't worry, the book isn'trecommending this, only providing information). The "Nature'sMedicines" section discusses more than 40 herbs and supplements.

The book describes each therapy and how it is used, presentsscientific evidence and expert opinion, and gives tips on how to finda practitioner and information on costs, advice, cautions, andresources in a helpful and reader-friendly style. There are alsoguidelines for working with your doctor, choosing a therapist, andavoiding rip-offs. Author Judith Horstman, a two-time FulbrightScholar and award-winning editor of Arthritis Today magazine, makes the point that complementary therapies cannot "cure" arthritisor replace proven medical treatments. They can, however, ease symptomsand improve your outlook, and may even enhance the effects of yourconventional treatment. This is an extremely useful and beautifullyillustrated book for arthritis sufferers seeking to expand theirtreatment as informed consumers. --Joan Price ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice overview of all the alternative therapies.
Nice graphics and type. Treats all therapies evenly. Basic info across all spectrums, including what to expect at your first acupuncture session, what naturopathy is, and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Separates hype from hope, again and again
When this book was first released, I gave a copy to my 75-year-old mother, who has osteoarthritis. Over and over, she's told me about consulting this book when trying to decide whether or not to try some remedy that a friend has suggested. She feels that it has kept her from spending a fortune on snake oil, and has made her bold enough to try alternative approaches that have been helpful, such as glucosamine-chondroitin supplements. Obviously it was the perfect gift.

Your complete guide to understanding and living well with rheumatoid arthritis

If you or someone close to you suffers from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), this book is a powerful tool you don’t want to be without. Two of the authors are physicians at the Hospital for Special Surgery, one of the nation’s oldest and best orthopedic research hospitals. Its purpose is to arm you with the information you need to take charge of your disease management and work with your doctors to develop a treatment program that’s right for your lifestyle and life goals.

In plain English, the authors demystify rheumatoid arthritis–its causes, progression, and various effects on the human body–and decode the often perplexing language that doctors use to describe RA and its diagnosis and treatment. They explain the various treatment and pain management options available to you and ways to discuss them with your doctor. The authors also include the true stories of RA patients whose tales offer encouragement and powerful insights for dealing with the difficult psychological and lifestyle issues RA sufferers face. Their expert advice and guidance covers a range of topics of vital concern to people affected by RA, including:

  • Old, new, and emerging drug therapies, including gold, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants
  • Analgesics and anti-inflammatories
  • Alternative treatment strategies
  • Nutrition, diet, and exercise for RA
  • Vitamins and supplements, including glucosamine and Evening Primrose oil
  • Managing crucial lifestyle issues such as sports, travel, and sex
  • Pregnancy and RA
  • Alleviating depression and pain
  • Surgical options, including joint replacement therapy

5-0 out of 5 stars Rheumatism ArthritisHandbook by Paget et al.
This is an excellent reference work for the arthritic ailments.
The authors indicate some basic principles for patients to
follow in pursuing a successful treatment regimen:
1- be well informed about the disease and the process of disease
2- have a good rapor with the respective physicians on the case
3- assemble a medical team
4- select team members of physicians carefully

There are some supportive therapies for the arthritic diseases.
These are exercise, heat and cold application, as well as,
acupuncture. Surgery may be a good resort for hip, knee or
hand repair. Stretching exercises are helpful in achieving
a wider range of motion in the disease process. A good diet
consists of approximately 55% carbs; 20% protein and 25% fats.
Fish oil-particularly omega 3 can be helpful in dealing with
physical fatigue and joint tenderness. The work is written
for the layperson. It is easy to understand and apply.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Comprehensive Book on RA
I was diagnosed with RA recently after suffering with its symptoms for probably 8 years. I knew nothing about Rheumatoid Arthritis before this and never even considered it a cause of my pains. I am currently under the care of a Rheumatologist at the Hosiptal for Special Surgery. This book has been a tremdous help in conjunction with my doctor in understanding the problem.

The book takes a very thorough look at the Rheumatoid Arthritis - diagnosing it, what kind of questions to ask, causes, treatments, therapy, useful outside resources, and examples of others with RA.

A very helpful book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just a Reader but a Patient
I BEG anyone with any autoimmune disease to read this book!I was swollen beyond control.Taking preds, metho, napro, plaqu, and many other drugs. This therapy is slowly giving me my life back!!! I STILL can't find a doctor in Chicago who will do this. They want to kill me first with drugs, but Dr. Brown, and Dr. Scammel have changed my life with these books. Thank you for helping us to live even while passed on...... READ, TAKE ACTION, BELIEVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real breakthrough about arthritis and it works
This is an interesting book with chapters interleaved with thoery and reallife cases studies.Doctor Thomas Mc Pherson explain the causes of thearthritis and it's mode of treatement. He also talks about the actualresearch approches of the treatement of the disease. His approch isdifferent. If we summarize, arthritis is an infection related disease, that can be cured by a simple antibiotic (monocyclin) a derivative oftetracyclin. Both antibiotics can be used for the treatment. He explainsthat a common bacteria (mycoplasm) that live in everybody may outgrownormal levels and trigger immune reaction that is misinterpreted as anautoimmune disease. He give also many evidences for its theory.Duringhis years of pratice doctor Thomas McPherson Brown cured thousands ofpatients of this terrible disease.

I wanted to submit this review becausewe convinced an arthritis specialist to apply this approch to a relative atan advanced stage of arthritis. This relative was illed since many years. Within an year the disease completly disappear from the body of thisperson.Blood tests show today that there is no more arthritis.

Manyinterests are reluctant to caution this approch. In some way this an idealdisease for a pharmaceutics company.A disease that is considereduncurable, and for which you are condamned to take forever drugs that aremore expensive as the disease progress. Many searchers who investigate theautoimmune theory and worked in that direction for years are reluctant toconsider that there is a such easy solution to this problem.

I wouldheartily recommend this book to anyone who has this disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book in its field.
Not only have I read this book, I have used its remedy. In July, 1996 Iwas diagnosed with Lyme Disease, then later with rheumatoid arthritis.Iwas treated for Lyme Disease for about 45 days (which has similarsymptoms). Then my husband found The Arthritis Breakthrough book at ourlocal Waldenbooks.Once I read the book, it was just a matter of findingsomeone who would try the treatment according to the book.I couldn'tbelieve how difficult this was!Rheumatologists are not conditioned tothink "cure", they think "symptomatic".Therefore, even though the treatment is so low risk, nobody I called wanted to listen. Depending on the severity of the disease, the book recommends a beginninglow dose of minocycline and anti-inflammatory.Since I was diagnosedearly, I began 50mg, 3X per week and and anti-inflammatory daily. After 3mos., I discontinued the anti-inflammatory and began taking Aleve as Ineeded it.Over the span of the last 18 mos., the minocyline has beenincreased gradually to the dose I take now of 200mg, 4X a week.I expectto be cured by this November. Before this book, I could barely walk. Now Iam back to a normal life of golf, gardening, swimming, etc.If I couldgive this book 10 stars, it certainly deserves it!It has changed my life. ... Product Description
The only arthritis guide you'll ever need-from the author of the landmark health classic Sinus Survival.

Arthritis can be healed. But the healing will not arise from adopting a single miracle treatment or taking a magical herb or pill. Living successfully with arthritis can be achieved by the simple, committed lifestyle changes and combination of healthful natural and traditional treatments explored in easy-to-understand detail in Robert S. Ivker's Arthritis Survival.

The twenty-one million Americans who suffer from osteoarthritis are often also suffering from unhealthy nutritional, physical, and even emotional lifestyles. Yet too frequently they are told simply to reach into their medicine cabinet for a cure. While conventional medicine plays an invaluable role in alleviating the symptoms of this disease, the Arthritis Survival program will help readers truly relieve their pain and replace it with a feeling of wellness and hope.

In meticulous and easily understood detail, Arthritis Survival begins with a "quick fix" guide that outlines the herbs, vitamins, and other substances that can begin to relieve pain right away. Dr. Ivker then lays out a program of lifestyle changes-from exercise, to eating choices, to emotional factors-that will help readers to gain mastery over arthritis. He provides specific recipes for healthful eating, a wellness self-test, and an extensive guide to resources that will allow readers to further shape their own arthritis survival program.
