Product Description
Whether your child has been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome or troubling symptoms are just becoming apparent, this book will guide you in the right direction.

AS manifests itself in an array of characteristics, including average to high intelligence, obsessive behavior, intense special interests, and difficulty dealing with everyday social situations. Children with AS often have trouble processing and expressing emotions appropriately; they may be physically awkward or have unique learning styles. This can lead to isolation, inappropriate educational placement, misdiagnosis, and high risk for anxiety, depression, and even suicide.

As a parent of a boy diagnosed with AS in 1994, Barbara Kirby found scant resources and support. She developed the award-winning OASIS (Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support) Web site in l995 to help other parents find the information they need. She teamed up with Patricia Romanowski Bashe, now co-owner of OASIS and herself the mother of a son with AS, to write The OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome, the most complete resource for parents and teachers of children with AS.

Romanowski Bashe and Kirby have gathered the most up-to-date information from leading AS authorities, including Dr. Tony Attwood, who wrote the foreword. They know firsthand the joys and frustrations of raising children with AS, and they share their own experiences as well as those of dozens of parents facing the same challenges. You’ll learn what AS looks like and how it is diagnosed; how parents can accept and work with the diagnosis; what interventions, therapies, and medications are available; how to navigate through the school system, including the ins and outs of special ed; how parents can raise their unique child, guiding him or her through the social, emotional, and intellectual challenges on the way to adulthood. The authors’ surveys of thousands of parents of kids with AS spotlight and address concerns you doubtless share. This practical, sympathetic guide will help you face the particular challenges of loving and raising a child with AS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I saw my daughter so clearly!!!
From the first page I couldn't believe that she was describing my daughter to a tee. All of the other information and books on Asperger's was so rigid that my daughter did not fit their ideal of Asperger's, yet she fit most of it. But, because of this book I could see my daughter completely. I am about to re-read it. It's a library book but I will be soon ordering my own copy and telling her therapist who have no clue about Asperger's about it as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved Our Family
This isn't a book, it is a "good deed" (no, make that GREAT deed). And even that isn't high enough praise.Page by page, we have found answers to dozens of questions that we have been asking, but previously finding no answers. We went to therapists, psychiatrists & psychologists, but until Barbara & Patricia came along with this book, our family was sinking fast.
We are buying additional copies to give to family members and for the staff where our kid goes to school.

5-0 out of 5 stars We wouldn't have had a diagnosis if it weren't for this book
What an eye-opening experience it was for me to finally find an explaination to my son's behaviors!Wow, we would have been stuck with an AS child being treated for ADHD and still having no success in the social adjustments.

The first night we recieved our book, my husband and I stayed up half the night screeming, "Look at this . . . This is my son"!It set us on our way to see a specialist that knew something more than our family pediatrician did about this neurological complex.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, AND THANKS AGAIN!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars the bestAsperger's book I've read!
My son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome two years ago. Of the 5-6 books devoted to Asperger's which I have read, this book is by far the BEST! It is very readable and easy for the layperson to understand and digest. Issues that were barely mentioned in other AS reference books were given time and space in the OASIS book. ... Read more

Product Description
Kenneth Hall was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the age of eight. His early school years had been difficult, as although he is bright and articulate, his behavior could be challenging and easily misread. After his diagnosis, the Local Education Board intervened and provided him with a laptop computer, to encourage him to express himself. This book is the result. Kenneth is in a unique position to describe some of the inner experiences and perceptions of autism in childhood. He has a warm and positive attitude to Asperger's Syndrome which other children will find inspiring. Insights, struggles and joys are recounted vividly in a frank and humorous way. His book is for anyone interested in understanding more about autism, including parents, siblings, teachers and professionals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Helps with understanding how a child with Aspergers or autism thinks.May help with another form of discipline/encouragement that may help motivate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kenneth - Incredibly Smart Guy
Actually, I have never seen such a smart boy who could write about his own autism/Asperger's(a/A). In those days He still had difficulties in what society had expected of him such as handwriting, fussy eating habit, poor sleeping, and so on. Brenda Boyd, Kenneth's mother tried harder to raise her a/A kid than most parents raised kids.

However, I must admit he has some splendid talents most NT's might miss. - computer skills, maths, reading books, and playing the guitar! And those are valuable ones he should be proud of, where I found he is not a dropout! Since Kenneth could write about himself and his published book turned out to sell well, I bet even NT's must have been surprised at Kenneth's writing skills and so am I!

Now Kenneth Hall is around 20, I guess he has gotten over most of his negative a/A traits by ABA(=Applied Behavior Analysis) thanks to Brenda and other carers. Autism/Asperger's themselves will never end for the rest of our lives, though.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing
I am the parent of a 10 year old son with Asperger's syndrome, and purchased this book in the hope that my son could read it and identify with the author and know that there are other kids out there "like him".While I knew going into it that this was written by a 10 year old, I really expected that more substantial editorial or at least parental guidance had gone into the final product. The book is basically stream-of-consciousness writing from a child who tends to perseverate on several favorite topics (as children with Asperger's are prone to do!) So- while it's a fine effort from a child- it was a lot like reading a kid's "Write an essay about who you are" report for 5th grade Language Arts class. Also, the fact that the author is Irish led to some vocabulary differences and cultural references that would be difficult for my literal-minded son to decode. So, by the end of the book I was disappointed that it didn't offer our family what I hoped it would, but also had the impression and Kenneth and his family are remarkable people and wish them the very best.

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter will now talk about Asperger's with me.
Before reading this book, my daughter would never discuss her Asperger's with me.She would talk about it with my husband, but not me.Now she will. When she was 3 years old, I met with her teacher to discuss her 'quirks' and began to realize that she fit the Aspie profile. After my initial shock and grief, I realized that the labels are only as damaging as we let them be, and they can be helpful, as we found many resources for parenting a quirky kid.We weren't alone; other parents had done this. This book helped my daughter come to that same realization. She knows she's different, but putting a name to the difference and knowing that she's not alone in the difference makes it easier to deal with.

Kenneth Hall is her hero, and she wants to write a book just like he did when she reaches the ripe old age of ten.

Only 4 stars because since Kenneth lives in England, many of the resources available to him are not applicable to people in the US, and it is challenging for my daughter to understand that fact.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
This book was a tremendous disapointment.Ridiculous.A waste of the short time it takes to read - unless you are an ABA teacher and need to read something to build your ego.Other than that - save your money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars realistic help for many
I borrowed this book from the library and had to get my own copy. There was so much helpful advice that was offered in manageable pieces.A sometimes overwhelming situation was presented with real step-by-step solutions to help put an anxious mind at ease.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great attempt
I bought this book to try to help a family member with AS.I have developed quite a library of these books over the past few years, and this is one of the better ones.

The book does a nice job of laying out the spectrum, and gives a good jumping off point to start thinking about a specific action plan for an individual. As some other reviewers have commented, the book is probably not going to be much use for the affected person, but is aimed at caregivers and support troops.

Someone suffering from AS once explained to me that "If you have met one Aspie, then you have met one Aspie", and it took me a while to finally realize what that meant. There is no one book or strategy that will help with a particular person, and unfortunately this book is no exception.

However, it is a useful guide in seeing some specific ideas for dealing with individual aspects of the syndrome, and how to coach around individual problems. It was certainly a great attempt to compile a helpful list of what issues others have dealt with, and how they managed those issues.

I am not a trained professional, but IMHO the problem is that AS symptoms are not independent, but rather combobulated into a total package. What works for a specific problem with one person may or may not work with someone else. Therefore, I found the book most useful as a list of techniques to try rather than a blueprint for success.

Having said that, this book as good as any book I have read on the subject, and I would recommend it as part of the toolkit for anyone dealing with the late teen AS person.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book "Works"!
I found this book to be exceptional in that it provided me with a few new ideas for workforce strategies for individuals with Asperger as well as some individuals on the Autism Spectrum. It also contained guidelines for approaching training that are very clear and helpful to employment specialists or job developers. In the future, I would like to see some literature that addresses specific challenges for individuals with Autism who might have more significant barriers, as opposed to practices that address high-functioning individuals with Asperger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very positive and encouraging!
I found this book very positive and encouraging! After I read this book, I was very pleased to see that there is somebody out there who realizes that people with Asperger's Syndrome are capable of learning the skills they need to become successful members of society, if they are given all the help that they need.I wish that there were a lot more people who realized this!I hope that there will be in the not-too-distant future!

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but for a limited audience
This book is addressed to the person working on finding work for someone with Asperger's Syndrome (AS), assuming that is someone different than the person with AS (Aspie).Hawkins has a relatively modest definition for "work that works."She just means "a job that someone can get and keep," which would be a very nice thing indeed for a lot of Aspies. This book doesn't really address the subjects of work as mission and vocation, finding work where one's deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet.

What's good about this book?It addresses some issues that might predicably arise within the family of the Aspie. It talks about how a "job coach" could be use to help an Aspie at a job.It gives some good nuts-and-bolts advice on how a consultant might assess an Aspie for jobs they could do successfully. It gives some tools to help an Aspie negotiate their predictable difficulties. It gives some tips on conducting an interview.

What's not so good about this book?It gives the impression that it would be a good book for the Aspie, as opposed to being addressed to the consultant.I propose the title should be something like "Putting People with Asperger's Syndrome to Work (And Keeping Them There)"An Aspie would look at the cover and wonder "Why are those two women holding that man down? And why doesn't the woman on the right have her shirt tucked in, if they go on and on about Aspies dressing like slobs?"The book could say more about leveraging the obsessive-compulsive aspect of AS in preparing for an interview, acquiring knowledge about the employer, etc.

There is a issue brewing as to whether AS should be considered a disability under the terms of the Americans with Disabilities Act.This book doesn't address that, but I'm not expecting it to.However, the next book on this subject should.

Knowledge of AS is growing significantly, so to call anything about AS "ultimate" isn't accurate. All the material in this book is valid, and the only reason I don't give it five stars have to do with the comments above. ... Read more

Product Description
The poignant, funny, and truly unique observations of a young writer diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.

"Please be forewarned that you are about to read the observations and life lessons of someone who entertains himself by farting in public and conversing in gibberish with his cats."

Thus begins the charming, insightful, and memorable story of Jesse Saperstein. Diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, a mild form of autism, Jesse has struggled since childhood with many of the hallmark challenges of his condition-from social awkwardness and self-doubt to extreme difficulty with change and managing his emotions.

He has also worked hard to understand and make the most of his AS- developing his keen curiosity and sense of humor, closely observing the world around him, and most of all, helping others with AS to better cope and even thrive. Told with endearing and unflinching honesty, Jesse brings his unique perspective to the circumstances of his life and his condition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended
A life in awkwardness is a life unique. "Atypical: Life With Asperger's in 20 1/3 Chapters" is a reflection from Jesse A. Saperstein on facing his aspergers and the challenges he has faced in life tied to his disorder. Awkwardness for a longer period, the strange fascinations, the challenges of a sex life, bonding with others, and more, "Atypical" is an intriguing look into the soul of aspergers afflicted individuals, very highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I have a loved one with Asperger's, so I've been reading everything I can get my hands on about the subject.I was looking forward to this book based on other reviews here, but I was disappointed. The book loses 1 star for bad editing...Jesse's prose could definitely have used some professional clean-up, at very least copy editing. The book also loses 1 star for not having any sort of narrative arc at all.It jumps around between times, between subjects, between moods.Perhaps both these flaws are supposed to capture part of the Aspie experience, but I felt they detracted from the book.

On the plus side, this was an interesting counterpoint to Parallel Play and Look Me In the Eye, being written by a younger person who actually was diagnosed during his childhood, as opposed to only discovering there was a reason for the differences late in life.

On a purely personal note (and not losing any stars for it), I found this book uncomfortable to read because the "protagonist" is not particularly likable. Given my own situation, I like to read stories of people who have moved through and past some of the difficulties a young Aspie faces, whereas Jesse appears to be held prisoner by the syndrome, compelled to act in ways he now knows and understands to be socially unacceptable (stalking women who "ignore" him, sending long letters to distant acquaintances, etc.)This is NOT a "feel good" book about Asperger's!

5-0 out of 5 stars Honesty is the Best Policy
Jesse Sapirstein is a genius. It's as simple as that.

In reading this masterpiece of an autobiography, I felt that I "got" Jesse.Diagnosed with Asperger's, he appears to fit the classic profile of a high functioning "aspie."I loved his honesty and found it delightful and refreshing.

I had to laugh in recognition at how he bluntly told some prosletyzer that he would no doubt throw away the pamphlet he had been handed.I smiled in recognition because that is exactly the kind of response I would have made.In fact, on a personal note, I did tell a pair of prosletyzers who were knocking on peoples' doors in my building point blank that I was not interested and to go away; they were wasting their time; any materials they left would end up in the recycle bin and that I was not going to convert from Catholicism. In most cases, I would just lay low and ignore the knocking, but in this case they heard the television on from the hallway and figured they'd try their luck.

In reading Jesse Sapirstein's masterpiece, I cheered his natural expression and feel he is an Ambassador of Goodwill on behalf of all who are on the spectrum. His book will bring smiles and laughter and cheers to many!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very honest, I liked it and recommend it
I've been grabbing and reading books on AS. I enjoy books on or related abnormal psych and AS obviously qualifies. A family member also has it which drives a particular interest... Jesse's writings is so honest and almost "pure". This is a good book, different from other AS memoirs I've read. If you enjoy memoirs or books on psych or such, get this. The book also touches on Jesse's work in the AIDs community which I found added charm to the life story.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fresh Perspective
If you have a student or a family member with AS and are sick of ready boring, textbook-like info about the disease, this is the book to read. It's bittersweet to read about what were certainly agonizing experiences for him, portrayed with such an admirable writing style and a sense of humor. You keep asking yourself is it really okay to laugh (especially if you have first hand experience with AS), but you have to laugh. And then there is the message of hope. Wonder if your kid is going to live at home forever and never be able to succeed at anything...look at Jesse. He's an inspiration.
Hate to drudge up "Running with Scissors" but I couldn't help but put it in that league. ... Read more

Great book on Asperger Syndrome. I read it for a class, but very helpful to identify behaviors. Also suggested strategies that could be used for children with this disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
The techniques described in this book can be helpful for many students, not just those with asperger or autism. It covers a wide range of helpful strategies, and the descriptions help the reader understand the child with asperger better as well. This is a must-read for educators. It focuses on school-related skills and strategies; parents should read it so they can help guide their child's teachers, but they will need to seek additional resources to help with home issues.

The book is clearly written and well-designed, with very helpful illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars So good that I donated a copy to the school!
"Children and Youth With Asperger Syndrome" (by Brenda Smith Myles) is the best book that I've purchased yet for addressing an AS child's educational needs in school.I have her other books, and Tony Attwood's, etc, etc, but I found this one to be the most helpful for understanding what accommodations & modifications would be most beneficial to my son in an inclusion setting. It helped me put together a wish list of accommodations & modifications for my son's IEP and we wound up getting the majority of them.Quite frankly, the school should have known that these things were needed and we shouldn't have been struggling with them for the past 5 years to get them to assess and help him, but at least he's getting the help now.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a child with Asperger's Syndrome in a public school. It's well worth the $. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beacon of Hope for Asperger Syndrome(Aspies) and NTs
Connecting With Your Asperger Partner: Negotiating the Maze of Intimacy, is a BEACON of HOPE!!!! I have read the book in great detail. It is down-to-earth, practical, insightful and offers the Aspie's partner (NT), hope for the here and now and also for the future. So often today we are told if it is too hard, to just walk away. This book is not a book for quitters. It is a book for those who really believe it is worth working at relationships. It is for those who really believe in themselves...or want to. The charts and diagrams are easy to follow and are plain common sense. It is great to photocopy them and hang them where you can see them. The book congratulates the reader for things they are doing well, and does not berate them for mistakes, but gives helpful suggestions on how to make things better and encouragement to persevere. This book could easily be adapted for children and teenagers where applicable. As a health professional, I believe it is an invaluable resource also for health and counselling professionals also. It will transform the way we treat Aspies and their families. Weston has written a goldmine here and she has the foreword written by an internationally reknowned expert on Aspergers Syndrome. If Prof Tony Attwood is prepared to put his professional reputation at stake to endorse such a book, then so will I!!!!! It is worth visiting her site at [...] ... Read more

The number of adults with Asperger Syndrome retaining full-time employment is extremely low in comparison to those who may be considered to have more limiting conditions and disabilities. This book identifies why this is the case by asking the individuals concerned what they find difficult about working.

Looking at expectations, motivations, working conditions and other factors, Sarah Hendrickx explores the reasons why work just doesn't work for many people with Asperger Syndrome and how to resolve these issues. Featuring personal stories from those with AS, the book highlights successful scenarios and provides suggestions for both employers and those in search of work on how to improve employment for the benefit of everyone.

Asperger Syndrome and Employment provides essential information for those making the decisions and acknowledges what people with AS really want from a job so they can make employment work for them. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Short on Advice
I purchased this book thinking it would provide advice on suitable careers for those with AS and where to start. There's a bit of that, but that's not the focus. The author clearly has considerable experience dealing with those on the AS spectrum, but most of this book is page after page of testimony given by people the author has interviewed.Examples are always useful in getting the point across, but I found them too numerous and they often rambled on and on.One other point, the author is British and the book is aimed at those living in the UK.Some of it still applies if you live elsewhere, but many of the support agencies and offices mentioned are unique to the UK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genuine Godsend
This is one of the best books for and about adults with Asperger's that I have ever come across. This author truly gets it!

If you have Asperger's or work with somebody who does, then make this book your best friend. This along with Tony Attwood's stellar books about Asperger's are the keys to tolerance.

Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is the sensori-neurobiological partner to autism. This gifted author gives good descriptions of "Aspie" behaviors and tendencies.Neurotypicals (NT) and people with AS alike will come away with a greater level of understanding and tolerance for people on the spectrum, and for those who are, for being on the spectrum. It is a real eye opener in how very challenging it is for people with AS to navigate social terrain and the large amount of effort that goes into getting through a work day.

This author provides invaluable information on helping people with AS find and secure employment. To make a good thing even better, I like the way coping strategies and sensory and language issues often impact on Aspies. This book is clear, logical and extremely well organized. For people with AS, it is just this logic and order that makes the information ready, accessible and applicable.

I would like to propose a toast to this author and add a deep and heartfelt thanks for this important book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellently Written & Down-to-earth!
This is exactly what I have wanted! The author reveals what Aspergians(people with Asperger Syndrome) want. 90% of the opinions of them in this book impact on me a great deal because it makes me realize how hard they struggle in order to survive at work or find their suitable jobs. Even today many Aspergians remain chronically unemployed or underachieved at work mainly because of social misfits they face. In this respect, I suppose the author meet the Aspergians' needs. Moreover, the author shows us how to get a suitable job as well as understandings of the reality Aspergians face. That's completely different from typical job hunting guides that really tire me a lot! Overall, I'm satisfied with her well-organized and practical approach to employment.

I know some Aspergians have never lost their jobs, but I believe this book is instructive even for them. And they might find some traits indicated there could apply to them. If they grasp what is written, they could realize what they hadn't before! ... Read more

Childhood and adult experiences of individuals with Asperger Syndrome (AS) are becoming increasingly well documented, yet the crucial formative teenage years have, so far, been neglected. Reflecting the views of parents, professionals and those with AS themselves, this book tackles issues that are pertinent to all teenagers, such as sexuality, depression and friendship, as well as discussing topics like disclosure and therapeutic alternatives that are more specific to those with AS. One of my sons is seeing a therapist & she has stated that she feels he has some traits of AS.Well, after looking into it more, it would seem that both of my sons do.They are 15 & 20 and both of them enjoyed this book & seeing their own traits along with the traits of other family members being pointed out.The good thing is that it also gave them insight into why other people respond to them the way they do.I think this book will help them both in relating to other people. This has been a very handy book for them.Well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Special Education Teacher Review
An insightful resource! I found this book to be very informative. The author's explanation of the syndrome was clear and very easy to understand. To read the preface by Luke Jackson, a student identified with Asperger's, was also very moving and validating. I am in the process of referring a high school student for Asperger's screening. This book was my number 1 resource in my own exposure to this disability and its place on the Autistic spectrum. The author covers such innovative topics as; cognitive behavior therapy, exploring friendships, the sexuality of Asperger teens, the importance of occupational therapy, safety issues, diagnosis, parenting, interventions strategies, educational concerns and disclosure & self-advocacy. One would hope a child with Asperger's would be diagnosed at the elementary level. However, with such a new awakening to the topic, I feel there are probably hundreds of misdiagnosed adolescents out there waiting for help and insight. Parents, I urge you to approach your child's teachers if you suspect Asperger-like characteristics in your own child. Then, I recommend you all read this book! ... Read more

Product Description
Girls with Asperger's Syndrome are less frequently diagnosed than boys, and even once symptoms have been recognised, help is often not readily available. The image of coping well presented by AS females of any age can often mask difficulties, deficits, challenges, and loneliness. This is a must-have handbook written by an Aspergirl for Aspergirls, young and old. Rudy Simone guides you through every aspect of both personal and professional life, from early recollections of blame, guilt, and savant skills, to friendships, romance and marriage. Employment, career, rituals and routines are also covered, along with depression, meltdowns and being misunderstood. Including the reflections of over thirty-five women diagnosed as on the spectrum, as well as some partners and parents, Rudy identifies recurring struggles and areas where Aspergirls need validation, information and advice. As they recount their stories, anecdotes, and wisdom, she highlights how differences between males and females on the spectrum are mostly a matter of perception, rejecting negative views of Aspergirls and empowering them to lead happy and fulfilled lives. This book will be essential reading for females of any age diagnosed with AS, and those who think they might be on the spectrum. It will also be of interest to partners and loved ones of Aspergirls, and anybody interested either professionally or academically in Asperger's Syndrome. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for all women, on the spectrum or not
This is a beautifully written book by Rudy Simone, a woman with Asperger's Syndrome. She interviews women of all ages and shares their stories. There are a variety of topics discussed in the book every woman goes through in life, the she provides a section that gives advice to the Aspergirl on how to cope, and finally advice to the Aspergirl's parents. It's a book every woman can relate to, Aspergian or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am so happy to have found this book.
I've tried many times to review it, and I'm having trouble finding the words. If it makes sense, this book has been a great comfort to me. I've read it and re-read it several times. I'm forty-five, and all my life I've struggled with the fact that I'm different and just don't fit in socially, but I never really knew for sure what the problem was.I wear myself out trying to fit in (it's exhausting!) and this book describes how and why that happens. It describes so many things that I do, and many that I didn't even realize I did until this book made me aware of them. One of my children also has aspie traits, and after reading this book, I've decided to have her evaluated by a professional.I want to be able to advocate for her so that she doesn't have to go through the same difficulties that I did in school.I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who thinks they may have Aspergers Syndrome or knows someone who does.

3-0 out of 5 stars Likely to be outdated within ten years
All spectrum disorders manifest differently, and as a consequence, everyone on the spectrum ultimately has their own journeys to make. This is especially true now, when our understanding of the spectrum and its treatment is evolving so rapidly.

On the one hand, Ms. Simone may be doing some teens and adults a favor by trying to present a collective vision of how intelligent women have navigated the spectrum, how they've been successful, and what can be learned from their failures.Ms. Simone is a good story-teller, and some of her anecdotes are quite compelling. She also has quite a bit of insight and a gift for describing what it's like to live with sensory and emotional coping mechanisms gone awry.

On the other hand, this book has quite a narrow audience. In particular, parents of young girls on the spectrum may want to hold off on finding this book relevant for a bit longer. This book may only begin to present a useful picture of how a young woman or girl with aspergers can proceed once she's reached the limits of therapy. And every passing month, the limits of therapy and intervention for many kids on the spectrum stretch and expand dramatically.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for families with asperger's daughters
Really an eye opening book, as a parent of a child with asperger's, it really helped me understand her world just a little bit more. I wish this book had existed 5 years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a Pat Benetar girl-power anthem...
But in book form and specifically for Aspergirl...

Seriously, it is *that* honest, empowering, and inspiring.

Give Aspergirls wings that they can use, and watch them soar!

This book is not intended as a "maybe my female child falls somewhere on the spectrum" or a tool to identify where on the spectrum a person may fall.

It is delightfully specific.I think the best audience for this book is well, Aspergirls of all ages, women who suspect they have as-of-yet-undiagnosed Asperger's Syndrome. It is a good book for parents of girls, young women, and even grown women with Asperger's Syndrome. It is a book that would be helpful for any loved one of a female with Asperger's Syndrome. It is definitely mostly for Aspergirls of all ages, or parents of Aspergirls (or suspected Aspergirls) of all ages.

If my parents took an interest in knowing the real me (an Aspergirl raising a son with Asperger's) instead of lamenting in how I failed in meeting their expectations for the past 34 years, then they would learn so much about why I was the way that I was growing up, and why I am the way I am now.

Simone finds a careful balance in addressing all of the audiences- she gives wonderful and a wide variety of examples of experiences in each chapter/topic, and then summarizes them into a couple of paragraphs directly addressed to the female with Asperger's and then refocuses into a summary directly addressed to the parents of an Aspergirl.

I am grateful for Simone's insight into the remarkable differences between boys and girls with Asperger's.I am hopeful that this book helps to change professional opinion and help more girls and women get the support they need to succeed as themselves, in all aspects of life.

So many women (actually females of all ages) are mislabeled as freaks and have their self-esteem and their futures destroyed because people (parents, teachers, employers) who don't get it try to remold them into what they think is "normal and acceptable".This book increases understanding so we (the Aspergirls) can stop spending all of our energy trying to blend in as normal, and instead put that energy into actually living in this strange, alien world we were born into.

Employment is an important part of a healthy, balanced and fulfilling life but less than 20 per cent of people with Asperger Syndrome (AS) are in work at any one time. The adults with AS in this book explore the issues surrounding employment, providing advice and insights for others with AS, as well as their employers and colleagues.Drawing on personal experience and lessons learned, "Asperger Syndrome and Employment" looks at: the transition from education to employment; the importance of matching skills to career choices; practical coping strategies for employees with AS in the workplace; advice for employers, including the need to make 'reasonable adjustments' to avoid discrimination; and, ways in which employment services ought to work for people with AS.This is essential reading for adults with AS, their family and friends, employment services and career advisers, and companies needing to know how, in practical terms, to accommodate employees with AS. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Aspies Need More Chances to Get Ahead!
Retrospectively, adults with Asperger Syndrome have been through harder times than I would expect in the United Kingdom. I must say the adult Aspies in this book are a lot happier than before they were diagnosed, because they have found how to cope with both their pros and cons in order to get employed. I can see many of them have felt different and/or distant from other people not only at school but at work, which often causes frequent job changes, alienation, and other negative effects. Actually, I still have the same experiences and am between jobs right now.
According to Professor Tony Attwood, one of the most famous specialists on AS, only 10% of adults with AS are diagnosed in Australia! How devastating! After all, Aspies need more support and understanding from other people. Recently more people have come to know developmental disabilities. But we must accept the fact that it will still take time to improve the situation to help developmentally challenged people. ... Read more

New York Times Bestseller

“As sweet and funny and sad and true and heartfelt a memoir as one could find.”
—from the foreword by Augusten Burroughs

Ever since he was young, John Robison longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habits—an inclination to blurt out non sequiturs, avoid eye contact, dismantle radios, and dig five-foot holes (and stick his younger brother, Augusten Burroughs, in them)—had earned him the label “social deviant.” It was not until he was forty that he was diagnosed with a form of autism called Asperger’s syndrome. That understanding transformed the way he saw himself—and the world. A born storyteller, Robison has written a moving, darkly funny memoir about a life that has taken him from developing exploding guitars for KISS to building a family of his own. It’s a strange, sly, indelible account—sometimes alien yet always deeply human. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
To be fair, I can not expect this author to write just like Augusten and I did keep that in mind. But the title is a bit misleading in that I felt like he touched here and there on Asperger's and the bulk of the book was about his time with Kiss, electronics, and machines. He went into great detail on these things and I lost interest at times because I had no idea what he was talking about. There are a few tender moments, a few memorable moments, and a few helpful insights about Asperger's. I felt like the book jumped all over the place with very little flow to the story. It read more like an essay than a book. I wish he would have included more personal situations throughout the book so that his readers could better relate to him. He would refer to these personal situation towards the end of the book, ever so briefly, and I would think, when did that happen? Did I miss something? But he just never got into it. I do give the author credit for sharing his story and I also do believe that since he has a special way of thinking because of Asperger's, his writing would reflect the same and it did.

2-0 out of 5 stars Half OK, half not so much
I enjoyed the first half of this book where the author talks about his life as a little boy and his dysfunctional family.I didn't really like the way he seemed to be proud of the "tricks" that he played on people, some of which were downright mean and senseless. The middle section where he recounts his days on the concert trail with KISS and other groups was pretty interesting too.But as he gets older in the book, the author seems to become more in-your-face about his problem, as if he is not responsible for his own behavior and really can't help it, but at the same time he is proud of it.It left me with a negative feeling about the whole book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book was an incredible read! I learned so much more about Aspergers from this book.Plus, it was enjoyable to hear the other side of the Burrough's story.

5-0 out of 5 stars FASCINATING!
Excellent book, well-written and amazing, if for no other reason, that the author, a person with Asperger's, wrote the book. What made it even more meaningful is that I had already read the book by his brother, Augusten Burroughs, called Running With Scissors.Astonishing that kids with such a dysfunctional background were able to figure things out, become successful human beings in every way, and still maintain a sense of humor. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's
This is not a book about Asperger's autism written by the professionals
who work with this condition, but rather the recollections of a person who
has the condition, and relates personal incidents he lived through before there
was a name for his condition. He tells of being sent for counseling because he
was "different" but seemed to gain little from this therapy.Over time he
learned to assimilate more effectively to others in his environment by trying
to immitate their emotional responses. He writes well and makes the reader
understand that there is no relationship of this condition to low intelligence.
This book held my attention throughout.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your GPS if You Have AS (Asperger's Syndrome)
"If you don't know where you're going, any road'll take you there."-- George Harrison, 1997, released 2002

If you are an adult with Asperger's Syndrome (AS), then make this book a very close friend. This book has some excellent strategies on how to navigate on tricky social terrain. It is your GPS in getting around and getting along in the NT world.

I love the way this author pinpoints behaviors and reactions that are not limited to the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum.Neurotypicals (NT) also have their share of quirks. They drum their fingers, which is very irritating, and engage in self stimming behaviors that are never called that unless observed in someone on the spectrum. This book shows how a/A and NT have more commonalities than differences.

The world is for everyone and not just NTs.This excellent book does an excellent job of trying to create a more even playing field, all the while taking into consideration the need for making accomodations on both sides.

For any adult on the spectrum, especially someone who has been recently diagnosed, this book will offer hope and provide explanations for lifelong undefined differences.Readers will appreciate this objective, yet compassionate view of AS, which is the spectrum partner to autism.People on the spectrum will feel empowered, justified and validated."Imagine," John Lennon's 1971 magum opus says it so well -- "I hope someday you'll join us and the world will be as one."

This author is a Goodwill Ambassador, speaking on behalf of people on the spectrum and is someone who truly "gets" it.I think everyone, NT and a/A alike will benefit immeasurably from reading this stellar book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Collection of Useful Tips To Cope With Asperger Traits
This book sure helps you to strengthen not only your knowledge but strategies of how to cope with your Asperger Syndrome and social lives. So I'd like to recommend this especially to those who remain undiagnosed as AS and bogged down in cruel reality; they may find their unexpected AS symptoms they had never recognized before! It is as if they could finally get out of a long tunnel. And they will get a chance to know themselves objectively.
Certainly, AS itself won't disappear for the rest of Aspies' lives, where they may feel distant and different from society. However, I'm sure they will make the best use of their own pros of AS! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource- Not just for teachers
What a great resource guide. The description of AS is easy to read and understand, making it good for family members and friends who want to know more about why your child is "different". Most importantly, it ischock full of practical strategies that will help you to help your childnavigate the "mainstream" with less difficulty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, easy-to-read
A busy teacher or parent can benefit tremendously from this book. My favourite part, which I now stress to every person who interacts with my son, is the use of the "Asperger Lens". The books shows manyexamples of a child's behaviour as it appears to others, then reviews the*same* behaviour through the "Asperger Lens", which is soilluminating! I highly recommend this book. Other AS books are alsowonderful, but especially for teachers, this is specialized information, organized to be easy to read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as other books on this subject.
Although the information given about identifying and diagnosing Asperger's Syndrome was excellent, I feel that other references, such as that written by Tony Attwood, were much more helpful with the nuts and bolts of teachingtechniques. In my opinion, the limited usefulness of the book certainlydid not justify the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Parents & Teachers!
This book, although written in the UK and therefore referring to UK schoolstructure, is a fantastic source of info for parents and teachers. I havegiven it to my 5-yr-old son's aides at preschool and day camp to read, andI'm ordering a copy to give his Kindergarten teacher in the fall! It's fullof great examples and explanations of why AS kids behave as they do, how tohelp them succeed rather than fail, and really illustrates the kinds ofthings that can trigger outbursts that we caregivers may not notice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to educating children with Asperger Syndrome
This is the most concise source of information foreducational modifications and strategies for those with Asperger Syndrome. It clearly addresses the strengths and weaknesses of these students, especially in the area of social difficulties. It shows people how to see problems from the point of view of people with this syndrome, and gives good classroom strategies. It makes good use of case histories to illustrate its points. It is a bit costly for its size, but every page counts. It is one of two books I consider essential for teachers of children with Asperger Syndrome to read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very good resource..recommended
this book is a good reseource for those who have Asperger's Syndrome and easy to use. Helpful chapters on how to navigate the the whole college scene. Alot of books on Asperger's deal with younger kids and the coping skills needed but this book deals with the older young people.
Very good resource..highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars very informative
As a parent of two children with Asperger's syndrome, I was very interested in reading this book. They are both very smart and are interested in higher education. In the book there is a very concise description of where our kids could have deficits in the college setting, and how to help them to overcome those. I really liked that there is some advice both for early and late preparation for most skills. I wouldn't guess there are so many important skills, with this book I hope to get better start for my kids.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in places but not a comprehensive resource
I picked up this book to see if it would serve as a good resource for parents who are attempting to prepare their 'on-the-spectrum' children for college.
My major peeve with the book is that the author seems to have not made up her mind if she is writing for parents or therapists. As a parent, I expected lists of skills to work on with instructions or ideas for how to accomplish this. While these were present in some cases, often the author seemed to be writing for someone who would know how to teach the skills to the child (i.e a therapist). While skills needed were definitely covered well, there was not always an explanation for how to teach the child these skills.
In my opinion this book is a good tool if you are preparing a child on the spectrum for college but it is only a starting point. Armed with it as a checklist you can probably determine which areas you need to work on. However, you may need other books or the help of a professional to figure out how exactly to teach the skills that are needed

4-0 out of 5 stars College? Autism? Yes.
The whole idea of eventually sending my 9 year old daughter who has autism off to college is scary. I keep thinking that I still have 9 more years of school left to think about that. But honestly, I feel like we're already behind in developing the skills she is going to need in order to go off on her own, live independently and succeed in college. Now is the time to start laying the foundation for future success. What she does now will affect what she will be able to do later. I hope that in 9 years time, I'll be able to look back and laugh at my today worries.

Sarita Freedman's book is useful not only in that the necessary skills are laid out, but the building blocks for achieving those skills are presented too. I'm already finding this useful even though my child is still in elementary school.

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete primer for success
I loved this book. This book, Developing College Skills... meticulously outlines every key skill needed to succeed in academic and social scenarios and establishes a bulwark of methods in order to overcome shortcomings which may hinder that success. The book is very orderly too. Almost every chapter identifies a skill set and offers insightful ideas and sound solutions to those who are below the curve in performing that particular skill. Many of the social skills and academic skill discussed are those well known as deficient to those with the Spectral disorder. Still, this book should be read by every parent and instructor, not just of those diagnosed or thought to be on the autismic spectrum, for many skills that are left to typical children to learn alone, such as how to not be taken advantage of in a supposed friendship or dating scenario, are perhaps not really mastered as automatically as most parents and instructors assume.

If I were to play devil's advocate and hope for one change in future additions, that would be for the author to expand a bit more on the already creative solutions to the many problems that are needed in order to succeed. If a role playing solution is offered, it would be nice to expand and detail how best to establish that role playing scenario and boundaries not to be crossed, etc. This is nitpicking, and it doesn't disract from the core success of this book.

Anyone interested in indentifying core skills necessary for children to succeed in social settings (and school and eventually academia as a subset of that) should consider having this book on stock. While several areas in the book are definatly aimed at those on a more extreme end of the spectrum, parents and instructors soon learn and zero in on which skill set their child or student needs help with and bypass the rest. In addition to satisfying expertly the title's mandate, an astute reader soon realizes that this book is not as specialized (just for those children and students diagnosed on the Spectrum) as the title suggests if one keeps an open mind when reading this vital work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This is an excellent resource book regarding Asperger's Syndrome. It gives clear, precise explanations both to the child with Asperger's Syndrome and the parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars top of the list of asperger books to get
I learnt a lot from this book - not from the bits intended for adults although they were useful for those that work with my 10 year old child - but from the bits she filled in.She enjoyed highlighting and we sat together while she did it so she could explain stuff to me as she went along.I even got an inkling that she has an unusual form of OCD that was not really apparent day to day but was worrying her enough for us then to seek help with. Each chapter has a part for the child in workbook style - they can either write or highlight the bits that are pertinent to them - and then a more detailed part intended for older kids , carers and parents which is more to do with what you can do to help.

I like the way that that Aspergers is presented in a matter of fact way - very suitable for someone with a new diagnosis. It does not "label" but explains strengths and weaknesses along with many suggestions about things that might help.My child could have used this from about age 6 or 7 but she is very literary - maybe more like 9 or 10 for most AS kids?

Whilst the timetables, check lists, single step tasks, home office, what finished means etc is very basic for those of us who have lived with ASit is very poorly understood at mainstream schools in our experience. The education chapter should be compulsory reading for all teachers with an AS kid in the class. It is a bit irritating to use the word Aspergers in the title and then go for autism all the way through the book but as long as you explain that Aspergers is part of an autism spectrum so your child knows why I don't see it as a major issue. In my opinion, the only real difference between HFA and AS if someone with HFA becmes fully verbal is the age at which speech is acquired. They then look indistinguishable.

The only problem is the length of it - it is off-putting to all but the most dedicated mainstream teacher. Can I tell you about Asperger syndrome by Jude Welton is a tiny little thing and although not nearly as good as this bookteachers seem more inclined to glance at in my experience (sadly).

4-0 out of 5 stars Autism Book
I am so overwhelmed right now, I started to look at the book and then lost track of doing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful
Brilliant for working through an Aspergers diagnosis with children - helps to answer many questions for these children and gives them opportunity to understand what it means to have Aspergers. I have used it several times very successfully. Easy to adapt if necessary to individual differences.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool
The most important thing for children with Asperger's is to work through lots of teaching moments. My son has a behavioral therapist part time but every day, all day has teaching moments. This book is a great guide to help with almost anything that either has or will need to be one of those moments. This is a great tool for us parents to help us use the right words and examples to be effective as part of our children's ongoing therapy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Asperger moms and others
As the mom of a son with Asperger's Syndrome, I found this excellent book to be helpful and informative.Unlike other books on the subject by so called experts who seem to put themselves above the condition they are describing, Ms. Rosaler makes it clear that the obsessive preoccupations and social difficulties of this disorder are shared by many of us and it is really only a matter of the degree of the behavior. When I first read this book my son had been recently diagnosed, and I was overcome with worry. Many of the books I read about Asperger's at the time just made me more fearful, which only made it more difficult to work with my son.It was such a relief to find a book that was simply and clearly written and almost soothing in tone and where I could totally relate to the anecdotes she described. Yet she did not gloss over the problems that this condition creates and offered many practical suggestions. I would recommend this book to parents, teachers and other people who work with individuals with Asperger's.And it is one of the few books on the subject that I was happy to show to my son when he was in his teens.

5-0 out of 5 stars great introduction to this baffling disorder
First--I don't know what that Patty person was talking about!Sounds like it might be a personal vendetta! This is a great book.Very well written, well organized, with a definite point of view:that is, an advocacy point of view.Very comprehensive as well--covers everything from the theories about autism to practical advice for educating children with this disorder.I greatly appreciated the tone of the book as well. Not cute or condescending or boring like so many books of this ilk.The only drawback is the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't throw away your money
The book is unfocused.Ms. Rosaler never settled on what her primary point was.Part of it was story telling, part of it was Aspergers, part of it was stigma, part of it was special education and school, etc.It lacked focus and staying power. She drifted all over.

It was clear that all of her "statements of fact," were not factually supported -- in fact they often were wrong -- but were statements of her opinion without supporting facts.

She uses politically incorrect language about people with disabilities at many points in the book.

She identifies what she considers to be multiple problems but she offers no solution to the problems, nor does she offer any practical advice to the reader to help guide the reader through or around the problems she identifies.

I didn't find the book informative, well written or helpful. It isn't worth the price. There are many more books that would be more helpful to parents/families living with Asperger's. I encourage readers to save your money and pass on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for frustrated families
Although written very simply, this book allows the whole family to connect with the issue of aspergers. This book allows Aspergers Syndrome to be talked about, and not be a pink elephant in the living room.A little over priced, though... ... Read more

Product Description
It isn't easy being eight years old and having an older brother who other children often misunderstand. They don't realize that when he doesn't laugh at their jokes it's because he doesn't understand them. They don't know that when he doesn't speak to them or look at them it's because he doesn't know what to say or how to make eye contact. They don't realize that he behaves this way because he has something called Asperger's Syndrome. Sam knows that his brother Eric is different from him because his brain works differently. So, when the other children bully Eric, it makes Sam feel protective of him. But sometimes, when Eric behaves oddly, Sam feels embarrassed too. Sometimes, when Eric gets lots of attention, it makes Sam feel resentful - then, when he considers that Eric needs a lot of help and attention, it makes Sam feel guilty for feeling resentful. There are so many different feelings Sam experiences! "Brotherly Feelings" explores the emotions that siblings of children with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) commonly experience. With illustrations throughout, this book will help siblings to understand that their emotional responses - whatever they are - are natural and OK.It is the ideal book for parents and professionals to use with siblings to discuss their emotional experiences, and will also help children with AS to form an understanding of the feelings of other family members. ... Excellent book. Our family related to this well.My 10 yr old son loved it and realized he wasn't alone in his "adventure" with his 16 yr old brother w/ AS. Very easy reading. He read it all in the first day. Wonderful!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT Book!!!!
I recently purchased this book because I have Asperger's.I found the book to be very insightful and well written.Even though I do not have any brothers or sisters, it was nice to realize that I am not the only one who has these problems. My mother also enjoyed reading the book and too could identify with the characters in the book. For people who have Aspergers or who are growing up with a brother/sister with Aspergers I strongly recommend this book! For people in the medical field this book is ideal. It will give you a better insight on how siblings relate to one another when one or the other has Aspergers. This is a great book and I hope that its writers will consider publishing more books on this subjest. Please, BUY THIS BOOK! ...
