5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of a trending subject
A most comprehensive and very informative text concerning a subject all of us baby boomers should read. It is written primarily for the health care professional, but the editors did an excellent jobwhen explaining topics currently problematic -- when considering atrial fib treatmentoptions.I wish they wouldwrite volume two!The charts and drawings for illustrations could be cleaned up,but this is written so well, one willhardly notice. The book is referenced in extremelywell written fashion, and should be recommendedas an excellent source for AF in any library on the subject. They (the authors) go into great detail explaining results and possibilities of virtually every known study done, offering suggestions which for the most part are excellent. The general lay population can read this and appreciate the task they accomplished by writing on such a topic so difficult, yet lowering the diction to explain concepts which might seem a little selective. This is done by them correctly seeking the "rate" method of correcting the AFib in question which is much easier, yet of course, not a simple undergoing.Although, not a pleasant subject to discuss, atrial fibrillation is coming to the forefront of problems that anyone over 50 should consider as a subject one should know just a little more about. This book can do just that for all of us . guyairey ... Product Description
Abstract: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia, especially in elderly persons. Current recommendations outline pharmacologic and interventional therapies designed to minimize the risk of stroke and other morbidities that can accompany this condition. In this article, Drs Basu Ray and Heist review treatment options for cardioversion and control of rate and rhythm and make suggestions for best management in patients with chronic or intermittent AF.

Atrial fibrillation is the most prevalent sustained arrhythmia encountered in clinical practice. Chronic or intermittent AF is found in about 0.4% of persons in the general US population, and the prevalence increases to greater than 8% in persons older than 80 years (1). AF can result in significant morbidity, including congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, and stroke.

In recent years, management strategies for AF have expanded significantly and include new drugs for rhythm conversion (2) as well as interventional methods that can potentially cure this disorder (3). Physicians who encounter AF in clinical practice face the challenge of staying current with recommendations on heart rate control, antiarrhythmic drug therapy, cardioversion, and antithrombotic therapy. Curative treatment by catheter ablation or surgical maze procedure shows promise, but appropriate use in AF awaits results of randomized trials. ... Read more

Product Description
The attack of atrial fibrillation experienced by President Bushof the United States attracted more attention from the general publicto atrial fibrillation than ever before. Also, there is a growing bodyof knowledge of the pathophysiologic mechanism, the pathology andepidemiology, and especially of the thrombo-embolic complications ofthis arrhythmia, which is responsible for a renewed interest of theclinician in this very common human arrhythmia. These new perspectiveson atrial fibrillation were presented during a conference on `AtrialFibrillation, a Treatable Disease?', organized on May 7, 1992, inAmsterdam, the Netherlands.
Atrial fibrillation is not the prerogative of the cardiologist only. Many practitioners from other areas in health care, in particulargeneral physicians, internists and neurologists, are faced with thisarrhythmia and its untoward consequences. This book bridges the gapbetween theory, experiment and the clinic. Emphasis is therefore onthe selection of the optimal approach, including pharmacotherapy, catheter ablation, pacemaker and surgical therapy, based on thecurrent scientific insights in the mechanism and prevention of atrialfibrillation.

Product Description

Written and edited by expert electrophysiologists, this book is a practical, well-illustrated guide to the most successful techniques for catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation. While other texts address ablation of different arrhythmias, this is the first book to focus specifically on atrial fibrillation.

Chapters explain how to establish programs and laboratories for treating atrial fibrillation; use complex imaging modalities and guidance systems; implement a variety of catheter-based ablation strategies, either isolated or in tandem; monitor the ablated patient's course for complications and arrhythmia recurrence; and manage these problems should they arise. The chapters on lab staffing and equipment, pre-procedure preparation, and post-procedure care will be of special interest to paraprofessionals such as lab nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. More than 200 diagrams, photographs, and other illustrations demonstrate the techniques.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new
I'm off to the 2009 Boston AF symposium next week. I have been performing ablations for 9 years. I was looking for a book that summarizes where we are in the process in a single tome. Obviously a difficult task in a changing field, but progress has stagnated recently, so it is an appropriate time to start writing textbooks.
This one does reasonably well and is up to date. However, if you are already proficient in ablation for AF it doesn't really offer any new insights and if you are just starting it is probably a little misleading. For instance, in some chapters it still allows some of the less forthcoming practitioners in the field regarding potential of the success to continue their obviously inaccurate exaggeration. This harms the field in general and I think these people need to be audited - the authors know of whom I speak. So if a newer operator quotes from Chapter 10 a 90% success rate from the procedure described (presumably a single procedure - not mentioned), he or she is grossly misleading the patients, as we know from every other study.
Overall, I think the book achieves its goal of summarizing what is known about AF ablation now and where the field is likely headed with only minimal need for grains of salt when reading certain authors. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A little Out Of Date
Mr. E.A. Butler's book "My Heart the Doctors and Me".Is a wonderful tome about the authors journey thru afib at a time when much less information was available. That has all changed now along with knowledge and the drugs available for the treatment of Atrial Fibrillation.Unfortunately the journey for most of us is not over.

Mr. Butler might up date this good work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Personal
I am an A-Fib sufferer and am always in search of more information on this condition to help me make good decisions about my care. Despite the title of the book which informs one that it is a first-person narrative, I was hopeful that it would also offer very current information on research and make medical and lifestyle management suggestions, maybe with a few personal notes so that I could share the experience of someone who has the same condition that I do. But the book was almost entirely about the mundane details of this man's experience with A-fib, with nothing about the science or medicine of the condition that I couldn't find by searching the Web. Perhaps I have had the condition too long and know too much, and it would be more helpful to a newly diagnosed person. But truly I didn't need to know exactly what his doctor said to him at every appointment, what his wife said, what he said, what hospitals he went to and how many hours he sat in the waiting room, etc. The book seemed to be a highly personal account written to help the author process the stress and specifics of his condition, which is fine, but usually that stuff goes into a private journal and isn't offered for sale as a medical treatise. I returned the book as it was just not useful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY- SOMETHING THAT MAKES SENSE!!!
I've just completed reading My Heart, the Doctors and Me by E.A. Butler and am pleased to write this review. This book has been extremely helpful to me.While it covers the author's experiences with his own atrial fibrillation and is thoroughly researched, it also covers many, many other subjects concerning the heart.I believe every person who has any kind of palpitations, skipped beats, atrial or ventricular fibrillation should read this.My cardiologist originally alerted me to the availability of the book because he believes, as I do , that is a great assist to patients who have these problems.I also agree with International Heath News that is a " must read."

2-0 out of 5 stars So What Else is New?
The book covered just about what every A-fib patient has or will go through once diagnosed. It reads like a journal with dates and personal experiences but if one is looking for insight or guidance, it just isn't here. I think one could get the same information and arrive a similar conclusions by reading the heart disease summaries on the internet.

Product Description
Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been called the arrhythmia of the millennium.Millions of Americans suffer from paroxysmal or lone atrial fibrillation (AF without underlying heart disease), and many don’t even know they have it.There is no universally effective pharmacological treatment for lone atrial fibrillation (LAF) and relevant surgical procedures are expensive and not always successful.Lone Atrial Fibrillation: Towards a Cure is the result of my years of research into this debilitating disorder that has dogged me for 13 years.

The book is a useful manual for novice and veteran afibber alike; it debunks the mystery, myths and confusion surrounding LAF by providing the facts about the disorder liberally interspersed with personal "journeys" of fellow afibbers.Lone Atrial Fibrillation: Towards a Cure clearly describes the mechanism and known and potential causes of LAF; it discusses and assesses the various medical treatment options, both drug-based and surgical, and also covers alternative ways of dealing with LAF.It delves into the vital importance of diet in controlling episode severity and provides a detailed 10-step plan for managing LAF. ...
