Product Description
Cardiac surgery is performed on hundreds of thousands ofpatients a year, and can have an important beneficial impact on theoutcomes of patients with coronary and valvular heart diseases.Despite the favorable recovery of most patients, some will have theirpost-operative period interrupted by the development of atrialfibrillation, with a host of potential complications including stroke.High risk subgroups may develop atrial fibrillation in more than halfof cases, and often despite aggressive prophylactic measures.Treatment of atrial fibrillation and its aftermath can also add daysto the hospital stay of the cardiac surgical patient. In an era ofaggressive cost cutting and optimization of utilization of health careresources, the financial impact of this arrhythmic complication may beenormous.
Experimental studies have led to a greater understanding of themechanism of atrial fibrillation and potential precipitating factorsin the cardiac surgical patient. Prophylactic efforts withbeta-blockers, antiarrhythmic drugs and atrial pacing are being used,or are being investigated in clinical trials. New methods of achievingprompt cardioversion with minimal disruption of patient care, andprevention of the thromboembolic complications of atrial fibrillation, are also important therapeutic initiatives. This text is designed toaid health care professionals in the treatment of their patients inthe recovery period after cardiac surgery, and to instigate additionalresearch efforts to limit the occurrence of, and the complicationsfollowing, this tenacious postoperative arrhythmia. ... Product Description
Atrial fibrillation is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia, which is most prominent in the elderly. Today's drug options available for the treatment of atrial fibrillation are restricted due to insufficient efficacy, but even more so due to unwanted side effects, especially proarrhythmogenicity. This book focuses on atrial fibrillation and reviews different aspects of this increasingly common disorder including its pathophysiology, epidemiology and current therapy. It evaluates progress achieved by molecular biology over recent years in identifying ion channel proteins and genetic defects related to this disease. It also highlights new avenues of current research aiming to discover more effective and safer medicines for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. ... Read more

Product Description
In recent years, a myriad of surgical protocols have been developed to manage atrial fibrillation, increasing the confusion over which are the most effective approaches. This timely book presents a multidisciplinary, international team of authorities who have reviewed the evidence in order to establish which surgical approaches should be used under which circumstances.

Divided into five parts, the book not only explores surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation, it also offers a complete understanding of its underlying causes:

  • Anatomy, Pathophysiology, and Electrophysiologic Basis of Atrial Fibrillation
  • Surgical Approach to Atrial Fibrillation: The Cox-Maze Procedure
  • Modifications of the Cox-Maze, Use of Alternative Surgical Patterns, and Energy Sources
  • The Invasive Cardiologist Approach
  • Perioperative Complications, Reporting Results, and Statistical Analysis

With its clear presentation and analysis of the current findings in surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation, this book points the way towards a scientific approach for the surgical cure of atrial fibrillation and is essential reading for all cardiac surgeons. ... Read more

A 62-year-old man with no significant medical history presented to the emergency department, reporting a first episode of light-headedness upon standing up that morning. An ECG showed atrial fibrillation with a heart rate of 150 beats/min. He was treated aggressively with IV digoxin and verapamil, and while he was still in the emergency department, his sinus rhythm spontaneously converted to normal and his heart rate slowed to 42 beats/min. Focusing on anatomy and procedural strategy for atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia, this atlas uses pictures and schematic diagrams to show how to use intracardiac echo (ICE) to assess anatomy, guide ablation, and prevent complications during interventional procedures, pulmonary vein stenosis, and embolic events. The authors review the state of the art and background support in the use of ICE in interventional electrophysiology procedures and the anatomy of both the atrial and ventricular chambers. They discuss innovative indications in the EP laboratory, future technologies such as 3-D echocardiography, and the integration of ICE with other types of imaging technology. ... Read more

Product Description
Atrial fibrosis has been shown to concur with the persistence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and is only incompletely reversible thus counteracting attempts to restore and maintain sinus rhythm (SR). Besides the angiotensin system, the transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) pathway and the matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) play a major role in the pathogenesis of fibrosis. The present study investigated changes of the TGF-ß and MMP system during the development of human AF. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Antiarrhythmic agents are a group of pharmaceuticals that are used to suppress fast rhythms of the heart (cardiac arrhythmias), such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia, and ventricular fibrillation. While the use of antiarrhythmic agents to suppress atrial arrhythmias (atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter) is still in practice, it is unclear whether suppression of atrial arrhythmias will prolong life. In the past, it was believed that following myocardial infarction (heart attack), suppression of ventricular arrhythmias would prolong life. However, large clinical trials found that suppression of these arrhythmias would ironically increase mortality, which may happen due to the proarrhythmic effect these drugs may have (CAST trial). In individuals with atrial fibrillation, antiarrhythmics are still used to suppress arrhythmias. This is often done to relieve the symptoms that may be associated with the loss of the atrial component to ventricular filling (atrial kick) that is due to atrial fibrillation or flutter. ...
