5-0 out of 5 stars A Source for Comprehensive Assessment
Barkley & Murphy offer a superb resource for the beginning and seasoned clinician who seeks to provide thorough screening for the cluster of potential psychiatric issues surrounding the 'ADHD' phenomenon.

This resource is based on the findings of ongoing best practices research. It offers multiple refereces. And it offers many suggestions for ongoing assessment.

This resource is particularly useful for those clinicians who communicate regularly with primary care providers as a means of documenting progress or raising questions about modifying treatment strategies.

Finally, it serves to discover behavioral data which is so vital when considering medication as a therapeutic strategy.

4-0 out of 5 stars it's ok
This is what I wanted. I don't really know how valid this is but it is a nice checklist to measure add in adults. It certainly is better than the computer tests. It is nice to have somthing objective for adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Text on ADHD
The first edition of "Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder : A Handbook for Diagnosis and Treatment" was generally considered a must-read for all Clinical Child Psychologists and other practitioners who worked or planned to work with children with behavior disorders. The second edition is even better, as it should be. This edition clarifies how we have learned much about ADHD in the past decade. The book's coverage of relevant literature, findings, and data-based theories and treatments makes it one of the very best books on ADHD available on the market. I recommend it to all who plan to work with behavior-disordered children. Also, this text should be in most public libraries to allow parents the opportunity to read accurate writings about ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Assessing Co-Morbid Emotional Factors
Dr. Barkley has contributed an extremely beneficial companion to his handbook for diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. The rating forms are very useful for the clinician assessing ADHD and comorbid features. Dr.Barkley's discussion offers extremely helpful guidelines for assessment andtreatment of ADHD and various emotional-behavioral issues which mayaccompany or mimic ADHD. This volume is a must for any practicing health oreducational professional involved in the assessment and treatment of ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative reference text for study, review and treatment
I found this text to be a most useful resource for ADHD from a bio-psychosocial point of view. It included an exhaustive literature review of studies, of both children and adults, with ADHD. I also appreciated thediscussions on cause/ effect relationships. I highly recommend this textfor Physicians and Psychologists/Therapists working together and being onthe same page with patients suffering from and living with ADHD. ... Read more

This clear and valuable book dispels a variety of myths about attention deficit disorder (ADD). Since both authors have ADD themselves, and both are successful medical professionals, perhaps there's no surprise that the two myths they attack most persistently are: (a) that ADD is an issue only for children; and (b) that ADD corresponds simply to limited intelligence or limited self-discipline. "The word disorder puts the syndrome entirely in the domain of pathology, where it should not entirely be. Although ADD can generate a host of problems, there are also advantages to having it, advantages that this book will stress, such as high energy, intuitiveness, creativity, and enthusiasm, and they are completely overlooked by the 'disorder' model."The authors go on to cite Mozart and Einstein as examples of probable ADD sufferers. (The problem as they see it is not so much attention deficit but attention inconsistency: "Most of us with ADD can in fact hyperfocus at times.") Although they warn against overdiagnosis, they also do a convincing job of answering the criticism that "everybody, and therefore nobody" has ADD. Using numerous case studies and a discussion of the way ADD intersects with other conditions (e.g., depression, substance abuse, and obsessive-compulsive disorder), they paint a concrete picture of the syndrome's realities. Especially helpful are the lists of tips for dealing with ADD in a child, a partner, or a family member.--Richard Farr Book Description
Through vivid stories of the experiences of their patients (both adults and children), Drs. Hallowell and Ratey show the varied forms ADD takes -- from the hyperactive search for high stimulation to the floating inattention of daydreaming -- and the transforming impact of precise diagnosis and treatment. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Read this years ago as a teen and it helped a lot
Someone commented that it doesn't help coping, it does because recognizing is the first step to coping. Also, different people's ADD manifests differently as people have different interests which they hyperfocus on or jump between and ignore everything else. It takes years of discipline and effort to cope or get it to work to your advantage instead of disadvantage. There is no simple answer, and this book won't give you that, but it will help you understand the nature of the problem which in turn will help you come up with a strategy that works for you. After all, most people with ADD are very intelligent, they can usually find what works for them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Driven to... find help elsewhere
The book reviewed is "Driven to Distraction: Recognizing and Coping with ADD from Childhood through Adulthood." I bought this book after reading so many glowing reviews, maybe I should have paid attention to the negative reviews.

My main reason for buying the book is for finding helpful advice for coping with ADD - in my logic, that meant a little self-help and management of this situation. How can I limit the distractions? What can I do to keep on track throughout the day?

Instead, what I found in this book was plenty of information on recognizing ADD. The book starts off with case study after case study after endless case study, showing quite obvious ADD behavior. There is no solution or even attempt to curtail these activities in the case studies, it just shows the various examples. One of the guiding principles of this book is to recognize your own behavior, see where you fit in the pattern and then get tested. What I want to know is: what's next?

To be fair, there is good information on how to talk to friends and family about ADD if you do in fact have it. That's about as much as I can be fair. One must patiently read through some 240+ pages to get to the "how do I make the best of it" part.

Around p.244, we are introduced to "Practical Tips on the Management and Treatment of ADD". There are good points here on using calendars, notes, etc. to keep in line. But with all the cases mentioned in the book, I found it quite an oversight not to mention if these tips worked with any other earlier cases, or just examples of how they fit in with person X or Y.

All in all, there is good information on the early stages: self-detection, getting tested, looking for patterns in children, introducing this to family and friends, but little in the way of actually finding solutions to work through the ADD in personal or business/school life. Because of this extreme oversight, I cannot find it within myself to give this book more then 2/5 stars. I do not recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars DRIVEN TO DISTRACTION:Recognizing and Coping.......
Thanks to the writers of this book I found them talking about me as it they knew me all my life.

Never knew why I was so easily hostile and exceedingly agressive when pushed around by my larger peers.I had no idea what ADHD, (Distractability Syndroms) was about me to the "T".

The writers both have ADHD; who better to write the book????

Excellent book.Very informative and encouraging for those who struggle with these issues.A serious look at the differences of the individuals who have this diagnosis--and the various ways that they are affected (so much more than just behavior).A book to help you understand the truth about the subject rather than stereotypes or judgements based on the limited awareness of this condition. This book is very reassuring for parents who have children who have been diagnosed with or are wondering if their child could possibly have this condition. It will also help define the condition and the complexity of it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for all clinicians
Thsi revision of Barkley's book is outstanding. The book is easier to read than past revisions, yet like the previous ones provides up-to-date research findings on ADHD.The chapters on school supports are matchless compared to other books by ADHD researchers/writers.Parents will probably find the book "heady", but no clinician should practice without having read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but challenging.
This is the most complete explanation I've read on ADHD. It has been a challenging process but worth every minute and frustration. If you become familiar with this book you will be familiar with ADHD and will have a great reference at hand. If you have a child with ADHD or suspect the same you will get invaluable information if you can stick to it. This is definitely not "ADHD For Idiots"! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Overview And Ideas For Coping
Grown-ups have ADD too. Lynn Weiss was the first to tell us so, and she brought the concept to national awareness.

Her title, "Attention Deficit Disorder In Adults" mises the pizzazz enjoyed by flashier titled books, but the content is succinct and superb. The much larger "Driven to Distraction" is more thorough, by far, but it also has 100 more pages. Weiss' gives the reader just enough to start the reader exploring ADD seriously for the first time.

Kenneth A. Bonnet Ph. D. is promoted with her, as he penned the introduction. Feel free to skip it; there is nothing useful there.

Just as anecdotal as any other psychology-related popularly written book, the reader will see several case studies to which he or she might relate.

Weiss lists and describes the emotional pain felt by most ADD sufferers, from self-esteem to anger and more.

She presents the positives of ADD, and how having it isn't a condemnation to a life of rags and sad frustrations.

Unlike some other books, Weiss isn't playing the game that ADD is a blessing, but she objectively acknowledges what it is, and what can be done about it. She discusses with candor romantic relationships. There is an excellent question-answer section for friends and family.

The best value comes from the chapter on restructuring. At a certain point, someone with ADD knows what's going on, but what they want to know is how to deal with it. Weiss shows the way with example charts that can realistically applied.

The singular drawback to this book is its need for an update. Research has been exploding with new ideas in medication, diagnoses and management. Weiss tackles all of this in a 60+ page Appendices section, with contact information for support groups, organizations, and sample official letters to interested parties. Year to year, these lists can quickly become out of date.

I'm a big fan of Weiss for the reason that through every one of her books, she's a pragmatist. No silly games of "I think I can, I think I can," but good old-fashioned how-tos.

Other helpful books in the ADD reader's library will be "Driven to Distraction" by Hallowell and Ratey, "Uncommon Gifts" by James Evans (very encouraging, especially for men), and "Managing Attention & Learning Disorders: Super Survival Strategies" by Elaine K. McEwan.

I fully recommend "Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults" by Lynn Weiss.

5-0 out of 5 stars My ADHD "bible"
This book was great for me!It was as though the author had been living inside my brain. Some of the issues in this particular book did not particularly pertain to me, but most of them did.I have purchased several of these books and given them to people who have been diagnosed adult ADD or ADHD telling them to return it if they did not like it.If they did like it then they could reimburse me for it.So far 6 of 6 people have sent me a thank you note with a check for repayment.I have just ordered another copy of this book for my fiance to have for his own referance since this book does a much better job of explaining how I think, feel, act etc than I can!

Another book that I read just after being diagnosed and medicated for ADHD is "Safe People" by Cloud and Townsend. It helped me to re-set limits, re-define boundaries, and fine tune my interactions. It is also available on audio!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I bought this book, suspecting that I might have Adult ADD.I was hoping to get a book that presented a general overview of the condition, with an emphasis on adults.Though the book focuses on adults, I was disappointed because like previous reviewers of this book, I found that it's geared toward those with the hyperactivity vs. inattentive type.Although I could empathize, I couldn't related to many of the stories about extremely dysfunctional relationships and coping styles, so the book wasn't very helpful to me.

I believe that I've never been diagnosed with the condition precisely because of the lack of the hyperactivity symptoms (e.g. acting out behavior in class) that the book focused on.I overcompensated in various areas to function & "succeed" the best I could.I was disappointed that the book didn't really get into this aspect of Adult ADD (overcompensation), and seemed to focus on adults who had "failure after failure" and experienced a great deal of verbal and/or physical abuse as a result, as well.

There were some helpful tips in managing ADD symptoms such as distractability. e.g. She suggested working on pacing of tasks and creating a conducive environment. However, she presented some of the ideas as if all those with ADD would benefit.e.g. She wrote "Sound screens are important," explaining that "white noise" like TV or the radio could help an individual focus on a task.Perhaps, but personally, white noise doesn't work for me, and distracts rather than focuses my attention.I need complete silence, and must wear earplugs to concentrate.I appreciated her inclusion of the white noise idea, but I think it would've been better if she presented it as one option, not a suggestion for everyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars This primarily deals with hyperactive type adhd
This book would probably be helpful in dealing with adhd that is hyperactive but if you have the primarily inattentive type...pass on this book.As a matter of fact, there is a quiz to "self-test" yourself. If you are primarily inattentive this test will not be accurate. In fact, as I re-call the author even says something to the effect if you don't have a positive on this test...you aren't adhd. Now, I know the field of adhd has changed and grown... and maybe the book just hasnt caught up.If you are adhd-hyperactive, I can see this book being helpful. If you arent hyperactive I cant see any help at all... in fact someone telling you you don't have something your doctor says you do have is only confusing. If you are a woman...."woman and add" is the best book i have read...and there is alot about inattentive type adhd.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good info for starting out...
This was the first book that I read on the subject of adults with ADD, anda lot of the info in there was, for me, an awakening. Upon reading throughthe various chapters and coming across traits in others, I could point toit and go "Hey! So I'm not just wierd, that's normal for beingADD!" I also liked her attitude that ADD didn't actually mean one hada disorder or a deficit, as every individual who I'd told up to that pointthat I'd had it had relayed to me just how sorry they were for me that mybrain was "that way".She did go a bit heavily on the emotionaldamage caused by being "differently brained", but her spiel isobviously on the damage done to self-esteem because of this inability tooperate "normally". All in all it was a wonderful introductorybook, and a wonderful gateway in to further reading and researching onadults with ADD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Drugs Are Not The Answer!
Drugs are effective for some people with ADD. Or so I've been told. I tried Ritalin, Welbutrin, Adderall, Zoloft, Lexapro, Neurontin and others in various combinations. My ADD did not improve but I experienced a host of side effects including dizziness, insomnia, headache, increased irritability, loss of physical abilities and back pain.

Getting Rid Of Ritalin explains how neurofeedback works as an alternative to drugs. Neurofeedback trains the brain to regulate itself. The book is easy to read and filled with common sense. The author uses a scientific approach and shows a personal concern for those who suffer from ADD. There are insights that help to explain symptoms and how they can be improved. One of the best things about this treatment regimen (neurofeedback) is that it has virtually NO side effects!

Neurofeedback has helped me. I am in a better mood, more organized and less irritable. According to Robert Hill- drugs, even when they work, are only a temporary solution. After a while they lose their effectiveness. And I can testify to how expensive they are. Before you spend thousand on brain scans and psycho-active drugs try letting your brain heal itself with neurofeedback.

5-0 out of 5 stars readable and well informed
I picked this book up because I was seeking to learn more about neurofeedback, and now it is one of my favourite works on ADD and brain care.I appreciated the background given by the authors on how they arrived at their current position; their range of experience is reassuring.

Neurofeedback is only a fraction of this book.I enjoyed the introduction to "low-arousal hypothesis" in the chapter on what causes ADD.The authors address forms of ADD both with and without the hyperactivity component. The chapters on nutrition and toxins were thorough, although it's always a little disappointing to read those lists of "Things to Not Eat."I felt the chapter on television and video games was important as well -- documentation that that stuff _slows down your brain_.

My biggest complaint, if you can even call it that, was that I skipped over some parts I felt I already knew. But the book is clearly organized so that it's pretty easy to figure out which parts you do (or don't) need to read.

Overall, I think this book is very well-informed and very readable. They provide more references to back up their statements than many books I've read.I'll definately recommend it to anyone who expresses an interested in reading more about ADD, and it will stay on my list of neurofeedback resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Should Be a Bestseller!
There are so many books about ADD but this is by far the best and most helpful one I've read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book with a Wealth of Information on ADD!
For any parent considering Ritalin, this book is a must-read.It not only addresses the benefits of Neurofeedback but gives the reader a better understanding of Attention Deficit Disorder. The authors offer a holistic approach to treating ADD which unlike Ritalin, has no negative side effects!Thank you Dr. Castro and Dr. Hill!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Big Book ý Not Much Content
I found that only a very small part of the book is about Neurofeedback. All the rest is about issues surrounding ADD. The author writes as if he is explaining the material to a 5-year-old child. I found that this book did not increase my knowledge (gathered on the net) of Neurofeedback ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Larry Silver's Advice to Parents on ADHD
This was one of the first books that I read after discovering that my daughter had ADHD and also LD.I found Dr. Silver's book very thorough and very readable.I particularly liked and appreciated the chapter on dealing with ADHD in the family. So many of the other books seem to focus solely on school and homework issues when ADHD effects all aspects of a child's life.

I bought Dr. Silver's book on the recommendation of my daughter's pediatrician.I found it to be quite detailed and well-researched, but it was excruciatingly dry and clinical.I am usually a voracious reader, but I had trouble getting through this book. It's an important reference book if you are doing detailed research, but it's probably not the first book you should tackle after you learn your child has ADD.In my opinion, a better "first book" would be "Driven to Distraction" by Edward Hallowell et al. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I give it 5 stars just for Chapter 18 alone
Actually, I only read chapter 18, by Stephen Mcdermott. He describes the struggle of having ADHD so dead on, I had a catharsis.Mcdermott does a case study of a fellow named Jack as he goes through high-school and college.Jack notices that he has to study much harder than his peers, and uses such specific information about specific aspects of himself to make generalizations about himself as a person.

My only problem with this chapter is that it wasn't copyedited well (does anyone know how to get in touch with Thomas Brown or American Psychiatric Press?)

On the last line of page 584 it reads: "The agenda can prevent the therapy from becoming focused on a "crisis du jour," whereby therapists deal only with the crises and catastrophes that patients bring into the session to-week continuity they need to solidly acquire a set of skills."

Then a little further down before and after page 587: To set the stage for other techniques to work, the activation of the beliefs attention needs to be interrupted in order to decrease the stimulation of the activated belief.

Even with these two glaring errors, the chapter is still worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Glad to see this book is back in print.
Best available book so far, to help you start a support group in your area for adults with ADD. Based on the Twelve Steps of AA, this book adapts those steps to address typical ADD issues. Offers detailed guidance for each step, and includes suggested readings and topics for your group meeting. The appendix includes a copy of AA's Twelve Traditions.

Whether you call your group Airheads Anonymous, ADDitude Adjustment, Swiss Cheese ADDs, or Knapsack Full of Bricks Group, you'll need more than a catchy name to get your group underway. This book won't do all the work for you, but it is a very useful resource. Good luck!

It would be nice if the Amazon website made some reference to the fact that this book takes an approach that is fundamentally faith-based (religious).

5-0 out of 5 stars This book provides both the hope and the tools.
I'm in a step study group using this book as our main text. It is powerful, simple, straight ahead, informative and encouraging.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pharmaceutical propaganda
Be careful to do research on social story books concerning children with special needs. This one is written for and published by a Pharmaceutical company. On the very first page "special medicines" are mentioned that can "help us feel better", and that is truly the focus of the book.

The child in the story is written to not do well in school, not liked by peers, and always in trouble until his family finally takes him to the doctor to get his very "special medicines", and then the world makes sense again. Not saying that medicines are not helpful, but this book does little to break the belief that "all ADD kids need are medicine".As many of us know, even children who have well-suited medication still experience difficulties and could benefit from the understanding of those around them.

This book also implies that a child with ADD is incapable of doing anything productive and accurate unless on medication. That is simply untrue, and down-right dangerous to imply.

5-0 out of 5 stars ADD Kids are Just Like Everybody Else
Being a parent isn't easy, and learning that your child has an attention problem compounds your job. But Taking A.D.D to School introduces the topic of ADD and ADHD to parents along with their children. All children want tobe a part of the group and be just like everybody else; having specialneeds or being singled out makes that pretty difficult.

I encourage youto read this book with your children, and perhaps pick up a copy for yourchild's classroom as well. Armed with the assurance that ADD kids are justthe same as the rest of the group, your child will learn tolerance andunderstanding. Knowledge is power, and the more we can give our kids, thebetter prepared they will be to face the temptation to tease or scoff atothers who are different than they are.

Reading Taking A.D.D to Schoolto your children or students is a wonderful gift you can share. Buy one foryourself and another for a special parent or teacher in your life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic career and work book!
Do not let the title of this book fool you. Although it is designed to help people with specific types of disabilities choose a career, and find and keep a job, it is an excellent work with a wealth of sound advice of us all. Carefully researched and written in a clear and concise style, it is one of the best books on career and employment issues I have ever read.
The book consists of an introduction, 15 chapters, a bibliography, and an index. The book is a treasure trove of information and techniques that should be useful to everyone, not just people with the specific disabilities described in the title.
The book is well organized and written in a clear an easy to understand style that helps the reader to analyze and deal with the various issues faced by people with learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and Dyslexia.
However, as I read through the book I realized that these are issues that everyone faces when they are looking for a job, dealing with school, and handling workplace problems. The author's advice is applicable to all of us. Her thoughtful counsel about advancing in the work place, dealing with co workers, looking for a job, and all the other things she addresses, is good solid advice for all.
I highly recommend this book to everyone, disabled or not. I would call this book "Universal Design for Finding and Keeping the Job of your Choice!" Everyone should buy and read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical help in a readable format
This book provides high school students and adults with a variety of strategies to help them explore career options, find a jobs and keep the jobs. It encourages flexible, positive thinking about job options.

The book is formatted in a way that makes it accessible to its intended audience. The print is large, the and the goals of each section are clearly stated.

The author gives excellent information about asking for accommodations, but she does not lose sight of the individual's need for self-knowledge and personal responsibility.

Carol E. Watkins, M.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great resource for physicians involved in counseling
This wonderful book is a great resource for all of those professionals who have occasion to counsel people with learning disabilities. Easy to understand advice on issues such as education and career are presented. Interestingly, I believe that the information in this book is also helpful to non learning disabled young people who need a common sense and practical approach to "learning a living". As a physician, this book has been a helpful resource on many occasions.

5-0 out of 5 stars a non learning disabled reader benefits from this book
Learning a Living is a helpful career and educational guide aimed primarily for those with learning disability. However, its common sense approach and pragmatic ideas are helpful for those of us who are also non learning disabled. A wonderful resource for learning disabled, those who live or work with the learning disabled, and those who are beginning to make educational/career decisions. Thank you, Dale Brown

Book Description
This groundbreaking volume, written by pioneering clinicians and researchers firmly convinced of the neurobiological underpinnings of ADD in adults, is the first to provide broad coverage of this burgeoning field. Written for professionals who diagnose and treat adults with ADD, it provides information from psychologists and physicians on the most current research and treatment issues regarding our understanding of ADD as a neurobiological disorder. According to the contributors, ADD in adults may be responsible for difficulties ranging from minor attention, memory, and organization problems in well-functioning adults to drug abuse and criminal behavior. A Comprehensive Guide to Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults begins by addressing the history of ADD and the evolution of our understanding of the disorder. The neurobiology of ADD is examined, laying a solid foundation for the clinician to develop a scientific understanding of this complex syndrome. The assessment and differential diagnosis of ADD isexplored from the perspectives of a variety of specialists in the field. This includes an exploration of the interrelationships between attention deficit disorder and other neurodevelopmental disabilities that may interact with ADD to affect cognitive functioning, and an examination of the connections between ADD and a host of psychiatric conditions. Also covered is the process of differential diagnosis from a neurological perspective, which will help the non-medically trained clinician better to determine when a complete neurological evaluation seems warranted in the assessment process. Authors examine ADD with and without hyperactivity and describe a wide range of assessment tools that can be useful in developing a full diagnostic picture of different conditions that must be addressed in treating adults with the disorder. A wealth of experience, highly practical suggestions, and an optimistic outlook are the hallmark of the section on treatment. The authors strongly recommend a multifaceted treatment plan combining medication, psychotherapy, and addressing the pervasive self-esteem issues which typically haunt the adult whose condition has gone untreated. Specific treatment issues for Adults with ADD are also discussed. These include:-
* the development of practical life management skills
* the difficulties in relationships
* ADD within the context of marriage and family
* and higher education and the workplace. The volume concludes with a discussion of the legal implications of the diagnosis of ADD in adults as it pertains to education and employment, the important role of support groups for adults with ADD, and a thought-provoking examination of current and future research including the need for increased public recognition of ADD in adults. A Comprehensive Guide to Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults is a pioneering volume that will bring the most current information available to the attention of those able to help adult ADD sufferers...vocation and rehabilitation counselors, and numerous psychotherapists who recognize symptoms of depression and anxiety, but perhaps overlook the underlying attention deficit disorder. It will stimulate the interdisciplinary research that is the key to increasing knowledge and educate those who can truly make a difference. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A first rate handbook for professionals
While six years have passed since Ms. Nadeau publishedthe "comprehensive guide" it's thorough, relevant coverage of the basic topics/issues in the assessment and treatment of adults with ADD compares favorably to recent works by P. Wender M.d. and T. Brown, Ph.D. Despite a growing list of titles on the bookshelf this book stands out as one of few that offers well researched and systematic reviews of basic etiologic and developmental factors. Several chapters discuss the array of differential diagnostic and treatment issues faced by men and women with ADD and/or multiple disorders.Other chapters provide thoughtful analysis and treatment guidelines for dealing with college and graduate students, while other sections offer thorough coverage of assessment issues and strategies. For those seeking a broad-based, well-researched and accessable reference for treating adults with ADD, Nadeau's "comprehensive Guide" remains one of the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR THE PROFESSIONAL

My only complaint is thatthis book was published in 1995.I'm sure a second addition would be evenmore useful to both the adult with ADD and the practicioners treating it. Still, this is a book you will read enthousiastically, and reference often. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant place to start your fact finding.
One evening when a coworker was studying for a CEU course on ADHD, I happened to peruse the text she was using for her course. It contained a lengthy list of behavioral symptoms for the sufferers of ADHD, and I suddenly realized that an acquaintance exhibited nearly all of them. When I mentioned it to the individual, they replied that they'd always thought that they had the disorder, but that it had never been diagnosed.Since it was obviously very disruptive of their life, I decided to do a little research to see if I could find out anything that might conceivably help.

Although "Nature's Ritalin for the Marathon Mind" was my first book (chosen since it dealt with the use of physical exercise in helping focus the sufferer) the book "Beyond Ritalin" by Garber, Garber, and Spizman was my second. What I found especially impressive was that the authors did not espouse any given method of treatment. They were not "all for' or "completely against" medication as a method of approach, and they were up-front with what medication could and could not do for the sufferer of ADHD.

More than anything the authors made it obvious that ADHD is a DIAGNOSIS and NOT AN EXCUSE.It is not an excuse for the sufferer to "drop out" of the world or give up because it's "hopeless" and certainly not an excuse for parents to give up on parenting the child with ADHD just because he/she is "on medication" or "impossible."

The discussion of the various types of medications available was very honest, describing potential side effects, variation in individual response, and effective limitations. Most importantly, as they point out in some of their section headings: "Medication does not teach socially acceptable behavior (p. 130),""Medication does not help ADHD youth or adults feel happier (p. 130)," "Medication does not teach reflective thinking (p. 144)," "Medication does not teach you how to control where to focus attention (p. 145)," "Medication does not make the individual organized (p. 161)," "Medication doesn't improve self-esteem or self-confidence (p. 206)," etc.In short, both the sufferers and their families have a lot of work to do, and it's hard work. However, not to do that work is to spend the rest of ones life spinning ones wheels.

Among the suggestions for treatment of the disorder are those that the authors have found effective in their clinical practice.Their observations about complications arising from learning disorders and skills deficits were very cogent.Certainly the individual suffering already from ADHD is beat before they start until learning problems are addressed and missed skills are remedied possibly with the aid of special tutors.

Suggestions for behavioral training (with respect to remembering things, completing projects, organizing the environment and ones day) were all very helpful as were the social skills training for individuals who have difficulty making friends and "fitting in."The problems with task commitment and test taking were especially informative. The authors' point out that many individuals can do the work but may find testing situations frustrating and overwhelming.I especially found the hints about limiting and defining the task, sometimes even visually (by covering part of a page with a piece of paper) were helpful, as were those offered for developing organizational skills. As they write with respect to the latter, "Most people find getting organized difficult. The difference is that whereas most people can get away with being disorganized, those with ADHD cannot.Since ADHD people are easily distracted, disorganization can 'do them in (p.173).'"

The authors also point out that living with ADHD can be very stressful and irritating.Their chapter "Taming the Tiger Within" points out that medication can be somewhat lumpy in its effects throughout the day.It also may make the person look and act calmer, but may leave them actually feeling just as they always do.They can listen better, accomplish more, get better grades, but still not feel calm or relaxed. The authors suggest some progressive relaxation training, or imagery:"Relaxation exercises remain one of the best ways to manage symptoms of ADHD and to permit the individual to acquire feelings of control (p. 186)."

The last chapter pertains to ADHD among adults. Here the authors note that ADHD is not a disorder that the sufferer just "grows out of with time" but continues to effect the individual into adulthood. Most significant are the findings that in adulthood the outcomes of the disorder do not seem to be distinguishable between those individuals treated with medication as children and those who were not.It seems that multidimensional treatment modalities have a greater chance of improving outcomes and that it's never too late to get help.

5-0 out of 5 stars A balanced approach
This is an excellent, well-balanced book for parents, or anyone else who works or lives with a child with ADHD.
What I found particularly helpful in this book were some of the excercises the author described to help children with ADHD compensate for their restlessness, impulsiveness and distractability.
They recommends the children's game "statues" to help a child stay still longer. A stopwatch is used in most of the activities, and the goal is to "beat the clock". With statues the goal is to see how long the child can hold their "statue" position. While playing a game, the child is also practising standing still.
There is a lot of good information about medication in this book. The author is neither for or against medication, but instead provides good information on what medication can and can't do.
As a parent of a child with ADHD, I found this a very useful book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped for.
I had great expectations for this book.Unfortunately, it was not what I had hoped for.It is very dry, and doesn't come across as in language appropriate for the general public.I found myself disagreeing with the author throughout the book.I respect those who try alternate methods of treating ADD/ADHD.However, I think that most parents have tried everything, and that for some Ritalin has been a godsend.Of course there are many other medications now on the market, but putting my child on Ritalin three years ago made all the difference. He has his confidence back, and I believe that it will lead to a successful future. No parent wants to medicate their child, but for those who do it is not a negative thing.I found myself feeling guilty while reading this book that I had done something wrong. The last thing a parent needs is more guilt.I think the author could have been more politically correct in writing this.

5-0 out of 5 stars please readbefore you consider ritalin
If we had put our daughter on ritalin she would have gone into a full blown manic attack. She was diagnosed with depression with ADD as a side-effect. If you look carefully at the DSM-IV criteria for eitherdepression or a BiPolar disorder it is easy to see how the classic symptomsof mania or depression can be misdiagnosed as ADHD/ADD. There is a currentstudy out that shows that nearly most of the children diagnosed as bipolarhave ADHD/ADD as a co-existing condition and if mistreated with a stimulantlike ritalin, can further push a child into mania.

5-0 out of 5 stars The one and only honest book about all aspects of Ritalin.
After months of searching for information on the subject of Ritalin, I found this book.Beyond Ritalin is the only book I've found that presents the facts of Ritalin and not the myths.Someone very dear in my life has struggled with the stigmatism of having Attention Deficit Disorder his whole life. Many people look badly upon him for taking Ritalin, but as the book points out you have to find what works for you. This book helped us sort through all the stories, you hear from both sides of the issue and for once lets the reader decide for themselves.I recommend this book to anyone who has ADD or loves someone with ADD.It will give you the facts and help you make an educated decision of your course of treatment for ADD. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed for what I thought I was getting
When I first looked at this book at the bookstore I thought, Great,,my son has ADHD and was looking for a change in his diet to help. However the book just barely skims any one topic with a paragraph or two if you're lucky on anyone subject and has no depth to it at all.If you're just looking for the tip of the iceburg this is it.There is nothing more than an overview to any subject when it comes to amounts, dosages for supplements or nutrients and the amount needed.About half way through I quit reading it since it was of no help other than a broad spectrum overview. The Myth of Learning Disabilities..etc..by Robin Pauc I think, was much better at first glance and actually had dosages for supplements to know where to start and why this or that would help brain function etc.Hope this helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource
**** I went through this book marking sections to go back over and re-read. Much of the book is geared toward explaining what A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. is, the symptoms, and possible contributing factors. I could not help but wonder WHY? Anyone looking up information on A.D.D. and/or A.D.H.D. already knows what it is. Chances are they have talked, in depth, to their doctor(s) already.

A.D.D. stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. The "H" stands for someone with A.D.D. and has hyperactivity with it. If you are looking for something with A.D.L.D. ("L" stands for a problem with "Learning" instead of a problem with "Hyperactivity".) Then this book is NOT for you. Nothing in this book even remotely touches A.D.L.D.

This book is put together to give an idea of how to treat the symptoms of A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. naturally. That does not mean you will successfully treat the disorder by what is in this book. But what parent would not want to read everything they can find on the subject and gain an idea of what else they could possibly do? This book will have you parents saying "Yeah! That is exactly what my child is like! I know exactly what you mean!" I may be a "reviewer" but I only agreed to review this book because my own son is A.D.H.D. Whether you give medication or not, this book is for you! The concerned parent! The one who does not want to miss a chance of helping your child have a better life, now and in the future!

This book has been a best seller for a long time. It is revised often, as all good medical non-fictions are. After all, scientists and doctors are learning new things every single day. The public needs to be educated. Here is your chance to BE educated. Do not let it pass!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE Resource for Parents and Educators
A must-have resource for parents and educators of children with ADHD.

I have been an educator for over ten years, and have been exposed to countless books and resources about ADHD.Most of them, I have found, either bore you with excessive neuropsychological jargon, shower you with unpractical strategies, or both.I have yet to read a book about ADHD that I would recommend to parents and colleagues.Until now, that is!

I was delighted to read "100 Questions & Answers About Your Child's Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder."Dr. Nass and Dr. Leventhal have penned an informative, well-written book that is both comprehensive and concise. The format is extremely reader-friendly, and makes it possible, with a straightforward table of contents and complete index, to return to the book for a quick reference. The authors left no stone unturned in their efforts to produce a thoroughly researched, carefully presented resource that is replete with current findings and practical (yes, practical!) strategies to help children with ADHD improve their academic performance.I was particularly impressed with the "Medication and ADHD" section; Dr. Nass and Dr. Leventhal provide more than enough information to help parents make informed decisions about ADHD medications.

I HIGHLY recommend this book!My grade: 100 percent for "100 Questions and Answers About Your Child's ADHD."

You can easily skip those Q&As that are not germane to your interests. The book is fact oriented with no longwinded technical discussions. One of the co-authors is a practicing neurologist which is not the norm for authors of such books (no offense to PhDs). I consider this book the most authoritative in ADHD literature. It's my best find this year. jw ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have
There are three books about ADD you ought to own (four, if you're a woman.)This is most definetely one of them. Many, if not most books about ADD are helpful but the information is all the same.If you've read one "all about ADD" book, you're probably read them all. This one is very different and is equally helpful for ADD adults and parents/teachers of ADD kids and teens. It's worth every penny and then some.
(The other books I found to be extremely helpful and way above-average in useful content are:
"Driven To Distraction" & "Delivered From Distraction" by Dr. John Ratey and "ADD & Women" by Sari Solden.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on a very confusing condition
Personally speaking, I can't understand why this book is not utilized by more clinicians. Being diagnosed with ADD myself, I've read a lot of the ADD literature. The only other book that compares to this one is the book by Dr. Daniel Amen which uses SPECT brain scans in order to demonstrate that their are real physical abnormalities associated with ADD and ADHD. This book by Fisher and Beckley does the same thing except from a clinical / neuropsychological perspective.

In addition, I feel that this book makes a valuable contribution that is ignored by other leading researchers such as Dr. Russell Barkley. This contribution is the distinction between the hyperactive and non-hyperactive forms of ADD. This is a widely ignored fact which is crucial in deciding what is the best course of treatment, and I can't understand why most researchers in the field ignore it. After reading this book, I only wish that more clinicians had an understanding of the different subtypes described here, and that the psychiatrists who compose the DSM-IV would pay more attention to it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Source of Information on ADD
This book has taught me more about ADD than all the other books I have read combined. For anyone diagnosed with ADD, thinks they have ADD, or is close to someone with ADD, this book will deepen your understanding for what is really going on in the brain of an ADD individual. This book armed me with the information to understand myself better and to better inform my doctor so that he can understand me better. The authors explain the scientific reasons for ADD in its complex detail in a way that can be easily comprehended by any reader. The authors also address a subdivision of ADD that most books ignore and continue to address the vast differences that individuals within different groupings may experience. This is a great book to keep handy as a resource on ADD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful information for those who know they need the info!
Useful information for ADD folks and those who love them. The challenge, of course, is getting the ADD folks to focus on the timely info before they get involved with life: jobs, marriages, interpersonalrelationships......Book is a good baseline from which the non-ADD personcan coach loved ones. ...
