5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most useful tools in my parent/prof toolbox!
As a parent of two ADHD kids (now grown) and an ADD Coach, I found this book to be a wonderful resource and help to plan various behavioral stratagies. There are 46 different behaviors listed that are common to those kids with ADD/ADHD. Each behavior is broken down into step by step pratical stratagies. The Appendix also includes sample schedules, reward menus, recordkeeping charts, behavior contracts, etc.

It covers in detail SIMPLE stratagies (but not always EASY as DEALING with kids of ADD/ADHD is not always easy) of the 3 basic characteristics of ADHD: Inattentive, Impulsive, and Hyperacitve. A virtual recipe book of parenting skills.

Some of the behaviors this book give stratagies for are:

Does not listen to what others are saying.
Needs questions and directions repeated.
Is disorganized with possessions.
Has difficulty concentrating.
Does not remain on task to do homework.
"Forgets" to do things.
Starts but does not complete homework.
Will not independently perform chores.
Cannot organize responsibilities.
Refuses to do what he/she is told, goes on doing what he/she was doing, does the opposite of what he/she is told, etc.
Interrups others.
Is impulsive.
Is easily frustrated.
Intrudes on others.
Is easily angered, annoyed, or upset.
Ignores consequences of behavior.
Fidgets, squirms, etc.
Appears restless.
Cannot adjust behavior to different situations.
Runs in the mall, pushes and makes noises in line, yess in stores, etc.

I frequently used the information from this book over the years as a parent and as an ADD Coach. Hawthorne also puts out similar format of book for adolescents and adults with ADD/ADHD. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Explains why Attention Deficit Disordered people self medicate, with Alcohol and Substance Abuse
Overload: Attention Deficit Disorder and the Addictive Brain allows readers to "listen" to the overstimulated, chaos occurring inside the brain of David Miller, coauthor of the book.We are also provided an enlightening, revealing look at the chaos, other Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder sufferers are confronted with. Alcohol helped David Miller become more focused and calm, initially correctinglow dopamine and GABA neurotransmitter levels, but eventually created more problems than it solved. Mr. Miller provides an excellent description of the heightened anxiety and overstimulation occurring in the newly abstinent alcoholic.

The special gifts and strengths attention deficits convey are also discussed along with the importance of using these gifts. Niches where individuals thrive and excel, after years of inappropriate, ineffective compulsory public education are described. The ordeal of intense emotional pain, failure and rejection students endure in our public schools, receives a voice in this book. Overload increases empathetic understanding and admiration for our fellow journeyers, who live with the disabilities and gifts, which attention deficits bestow.

If public school students and teachers comprehended this book, they might treat Attention Deficit Disordered students more kindly. As Bill Gates (widely considered to have an Attention Deficit Disorder)advised, "Be nice to nerds-You might end up working for one."Overload mentions some famous Attention Deficit sufferers, including Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison who became very successful, despite their failures in public schools. Our most successful patients, at Florida Detox, are generally Attention Deficit Disorder Hyperactivity sufferers.
Their creativity, innovative ideas, people reading skills and ability to "think out of the box," often helps them become very successful inventors, business owners or sales people.

Dr. Blum discusses the neurochemistry of attention deficits and alcoholism, with less depth than he did in Alcohol and the Addicted Brain, but effectively communicates the evidence for Reward Deficiency Syndrome, dopamine type 2 receptor deficiency, and their connection to Attention Deficit Disorders.Discussions of neurofeedback, cranial electrical stimulation, neuronutrient supplementation, psychostimulant medication, acupuncture and other treatments for attention deficits provide a brief overview of treatment possibilities.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Was Really Ahead Of It's Time!!
It was sad for me to see that this book is currently out of print.

I am researching the connection between alcoholism and ADD. This book is revolutionary but due to the fact that it was published several years ago - I feel that it did not recieve the attention that it deserved. There is much new research regarding this disorder especially concerning the adult population that this book if had been published now would fly off of the shelves.
Most books on ADD (I've read over twelve) merely suggest that there is a link between ADD and addiction - this book focuses on that connection!!

I was hoping to pick up a copy for myself and a friend but I guess that I will have keep looking for a copy of my own and incur library fines until I do!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For All Substance Abuse & ADHD Treating Clinicia
I have found an either/or philosophy amongst my colleagues regarding the treatment of these disorders. While Substance Abuse Clinicians treat symptoms of ADHD as Relapse Symptoms AND ADHD Clinicians treat the ADHDassuming the substance abuse problem will automatically disappear, thisbook shows why those illusions are not only inacurate but dangeroustreatment approaches. This book bridges that gap more thoroughly than anyother text I have seen on the subject. ALL clinicians dealing with clientsfrom either realm need to add this very well written and researchedbookto their library! In short, I HEARTILY Recomend this book! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars it was published in 1993!
This might've been a very helpful book 12 years ago, but a lot has happened since.Heaps of researches have made their debuts since then that seriously outdates this book... by 12 years.

For example, the author's list of ADD symptoms only covers the hyperactivity element and neglects the symptoms of a child with inattentive type ADD (without hyperactivity). An inattentive type wouldn't necessarily have a hard time sitting down.Contrary to many of the items on the list, a child with inattentive type ADD would more likely be day-dreaming (similar to being hyperactive in one's own mind.. as I'd like to think of it).

Try to stay away from this one.. (unless if you're writing a paper or something and need to comepare differences/similarities between what we USED think and what we know/think NOW.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent info, effectively cautions against pseudoscience
Ingersoll and Goldstein give an excellent overview regarding what is known, and what is not known regarding Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder. For me, the most important part of this book is the way in which the authors show how wild claims for untested treatments should be analyzed.Too much pseudoscience pretends to be real science, and parents waste time and money that could be spent on proven treatments. An essential book for everyone involved with AD(H)D.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to understanding ADD/Learning Disabilities
This is an easy-to-understand book on all aspects of understanding, diagnosing and treating those with ADD and other learning disabilities.I am going to order three copies of this book to pass out to our localschools with instructions that all teachers read it.If our teachers knewmore about these disorders I'm sure my son would have received help BEFOREhe was 16 years old and my questions to them would not have been so easilydismissed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even if your partner with ADHD isn't an avid reader, he/she might read this book
Do you think your partner might have ADHD, but he or she either resists the idea or you don't know how to broach the subject?Buy this book.

Rather than telling someone, "I think you have ADHD," it's usually better to first empathize with and validate the person's experience. This book does that and more, opening the door to the reader wanting to learn more about ADHD. The title immediately appeals to anyone with ADHD who has never understood why his or her best intentions to make friends and fit in social groups haven't always worked out.

In my seven years of leading support groups for the partners of adults with ADHD, I've heard repeatedly that this book is one most likely to catch the ADHD partners' attention--and keep it. Even men with ADHD who seldom sit down to read become absorbed by this book -- because it so closely describes their experience. Finally, they feel understood and, typically, they feel great relief that they're not the only ones who somehow didn't learn "what everyone else knows". This alone goes a long way towards dissolving ego defenses around the idea of having ADHD.

Dr. Novotni knows this subject intimately, having been a national lecturer on ADHD for years and a pioneer in creating awareness about adult ADHD.Her tone throughout this book is both matter-of-fact and compassionate, never condescending. To get a sense of her approach, you can read articles at her website: http://michelenovotni.com/

A person with ADHD could spend a year in therapy talking about their feelings of social awkwardness and never gain the lessons found in this book.Highly, highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars What Does Everybody Else Know That I Don't?: Social Skills Help for Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
I wonder how many people WITH ADD have actually sat through and read this WHOLE book... just pondering...

3-0 out of 5 stars Might be useful
This unique book attempts to explain how ADD symptoms affect other peoples' feelings and view of the person with ADD, and how to adjust behavior to improve relationships. There's probably some valuable information in this book for anyone whose ADD has created friction, but it's not always easy to pick out what applies. It's occasionally condescending and a bit wordy. Other than that, the intro contains some really important basics, and the rest of the book is divided into specific problem areas.

3-0 out of 5 stars "What Does Everybody Else Know That I Don't?"
The title is too long, especially for anyone with AD/HD. The book is helpful but focus is difficult to maintain....which may not be the author's fault as much as the target demographic's inherent problem set. Still it is a worthwhile addition for anyone with AD/HD seeking to understand why simple social events are so often filled with anxiety and disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much or not enough?
I am diagnosed Asperger's/HFA, and I found the book to be useful in some ways, although it did not address issues caused by sensory integration dysfunction, which can also be found in many people with ADHD (not to mention DSI being misdiagnosed as ADHD).From the viewpoint of many people with ADHD, the information in this book is too basic. From the viewpoint of someone further onto the autism spectrum, the information is not basic enough.

The author assumes that the person with ADHD or other diagnosis who is reading the book can see the body language, and can interpret it if s/he pays attention to it.This is not necessarily the case - I did not start to notice body language or facial expression until I was over thirty, and just because I can now see it does not mean that I can read it - I'm missing over thirty years of ingrained knowledge that most other people have been gathering since they were a couple months old, or earlier (depending up the theorist you wish to believe).

If you have a child on the autism spectrum, the books on Relationship Development Intervention by Guttstein and Sheely may be more useful.A warning, though: RDI significantly changes the personality of the person who goes through it.In a young child, this may not be noticeable or unwanted, but in an older child or adult, you may wish to ask their permission before putting them through this very thorough and intrusive therapy. As an adult, I am uncomfortable with the changes I saw produced in people who have gone through it, and would not consider it myself.

It may be a very useful resource book for the parents of children with ADHD, or a child who is on the autism spectrum who has gone through RDI and thus has some of the basic knowledge to make this book more useful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Through and comprehensive
There's certainly no dearth of information or misinformation on ADHD available to the public. However, compiling a comprehensive knowledge base for the newly initiated is a challenge.I came across this book after reading nearly everything the public library had to offer on ADHD.In this book Dr. Flick succinctly puts together an excellent resource on all the evidence-based information on ADHD.He also includes sections on "alternative" treatments that will appeal to some but is careful to indicate where science meets the marketting.

If you're new to ADHD this tome may be a little intimidating. The writing is here is a bit more dry than some other good sources on the subject like Barkley, Rosenthal, Phelan or Hallowell. Also as with all books on ADHD published before 2000-2002 some of the details on medication are out of date. The only serious omission is an explicit section on choosing good professionals to help you manage ADHD.But if you read and assimilate all the information in this book you should become a good judge of whether or not every member of your treatment team is functioning well.

If you are only buying one book on ADHD to keep on your shelf at home this is it.

2-0 out of 5 stars ADD parent not satisfied!
I purchased this *kit* based on the fact it had ideas, activities ... etc.Maybe me having ADD I missed some info on it?When I got it I was surprised to find it was a book! Not a *kit* at all.So I will probably never use it ... unless I was to purchase a copier machine and print off items as needed. I have read some of it and it had good ideas and info.Just not what I had purchased it for at all!=(

5-0 out of 5 stars what a great resourse
this book is an excellent resource.I used it in a class I took and scored an A...

Highly organized and lots of great ideas and methods to get started.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Parents with ADHD kids
This book is an excellent reference for any parent with children having ADHD. It covers so much information, and provides actual ideas and behavior modification plans to start on immediately. Going through the exercises is also very helpful in helping parents understand more clearly the difficulties they are experiencing with their children, and what behaviors they should try to eliminate, which need to be ignored, etc. The book was fairly objective in regards to providing the different treatment options available for ADHD. It should be read by parents of children both on and/or off medication, so that a good solid behavior modification plan get get into place.

2-0 out of 5 stars not helpful
I guess I ordered this book thinking it would help with a pretty normal ADD kid; instead it focuses on kids who are severely disabled, is very dry reading, and not helpful unless you have a child with a true disability.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but too many colleges are not included; none are rated
This is one of very few large directories available which deal with LD programs/services forcollege students. However, it combines 2-year and 4-year colleges so the number of colleges included is misleading.I wantedto see more about 4-year colleges.Additionally, there were no HBCUsincluded at all. Finally, I would have appreciated some kind of rating of"quality."

Book Description
Explore effective alternative approaches to improving the lives of those diagnosed with attention deficit disorder!

This remarkable new book offers fresh perspectives on ADD/ADHD. Even more important, it provides new direction for sufferers, introducing an ecologically based lifestyle that focuses on hands-on interactive learning. Fragments: Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder shows how to use environmental education and activities such as organic farming, community service, mission work, art, yoga, meditation, and spirituality to bring about positive change in people diagnosed with ADD or ADHD.

From author Amy E. Stein: “This book is about life. It is written for those who think they have no hope, who struggle with life, with decisions, with addiction, and in search of themselves. I do not believe traditional psychotherapy or medication are solutions for those of us who fall under the label of ADD or ADHD.”

Candidly written by a woman who, at age 25, was diagnosed as “a textbook case for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,” this insightful book examines:

  • the pitfalls of traditional psychotherapy and medication for those diagnosed with ADD/ADHD
  • how an interactive hands-on learning environment can markedly improve the educational experience of ADD/ADHD kids
  • how an organic, holistic approach can benefit those diagnosed with ADD/ADHD
  • the correlation between agriculture and ADD/ADHD and the impact of eliminating pesticides and increasing fatty acid intake in the diets of sufferers
  • how incorporating spirituality and faith into ADD/ADHD sufferers’ lives can help to add discipline and bring greater satisfaction
  • and much more!
Five helpful appendices give you easy access to environmental education resources, agricultural resources, a sample agricultural curriculum, a sample ecology curriculum, and an environmental art curriculum. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A novel and medical journal rolled into one incredible book
Ms. Stein's publication, being an outstanding balance of informative, personal and scientific material, provided me with a fresh outlook on how to perceive and deal with my ADD. For years I suffered through the many negative effects that ADD had on my adult life.Being personally averse to resorting to medication whenever possible I often dealt with the ups-and-downs, as well as with the well-wishers telling me to take the pills, take the pills, take the pills. Ms. Stein's painfully personal accounts of her own dealings with ADD are a relief to the fellow sufferer. Her book reads like a novel, informs like a textbook, and cites studies like a medical journal. It is indeed a highly recommended read for anyone who comes into personal or professional contact with, or those who have, ADD.

Finally, a book that really explains ADD in teenagers and how it affects their abilites and lives....As a mother of a 13 year old boy with ADHD, I was lost.We were able to help him manage his ADHD until puberty hit.Suddenly, it was a whole new ballgame.None of our discipline techniques worked anymore. After reading this book, I have a much better understanding of the disease and how it really impairs people in certain aspects of daily functioning. Some of the behviors I thought were defiant, I now realize are part of the ADHD make up.This book provides explainations of how ADD affects teens depending on their personality type and which behaviors are normal teen behaviors and which are related to the ADD.It gives practical advice on how to handle discipline issues, how to deal with schools to help them better educate your teen and how to help your teen learn to function within the limits of his/her ADD.I am so glad I found this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to parenting an ADD teen.
Recently two of my four children were diagnosed with ADD.I began reading everything I could on the subject.Often the information was confusing, or presented in such a technical way as to be of little help. Giving Your ADD Teen a Chance is presented clearly and with great warmth.I felt good about my children's life.Ms. Weiss gives helpful, relevant advice, loaded with common sense.I have recommended this book to anyone I can find, including several mental health professionals. If your child is diagnosed with ADD, whether or not they have reached their teenage years, this is a MUST read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Much easier to use than Peterson's
This book has more information and is much easier to use than Peterson's. I found Peterson's useless, and I am purchasing this (I tried them both first at the library).

2-0 out of 5 stars Big but less than useful
There is a lot of info in this book, but I live in Washington and it only had info on 2 schools. A much better book is Peterson's Colleges for Students with Learning Disabilities or ADD.It separates into 2 & 4 year schools and also direct or self-directed programs. The purpose of these books should be to give you some direction as to which schools have something, and ways to contact them for more info.Tons of data about fewer schools is not that helpful, which is how I see this book. All of these books would be even more useful if they included a CD or online search capability so you didn't have to try to scour thru a large written book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very basic information re: only a relatively few colleges
I had hoped that _The K&W Guide to Colleges: For Students with Learning Disabilities or ADD_ would be useful in selecting an appropriate college for an LD kid. Unfortunately, it was not.

On the plus side, it contains basic information in an easy-to-use format. However, that positive is outweighed by the negative: it seems to only sample a few of the many colleges and universities in the US. E.g., UC-Berkeley is included but UC-Davis is not. (Most UC campuses, like most colleges and universities, are not.) However, the services provided at UCD are similar to those at UCB. Similarly, USF and USC are included but Mills College and Stanford are not, although the schools that are excluded seem to have the same kinds of services as those that are included. The same pattern occurs among two-year colleges.

I could find no explanation of why any given college was included or excluded. Without such understanding, the book seems like a random collection of colleges with very basic information about what types of services each provides. I don't see how it is helpful in selecting a college for someone with an LD or ADD unless you've already determined which colleges you'd like to attend and are fortunate enough to have all those colleges included in this book. Even then, most the information in this book would be readily available on most colleges' web sites, along with a wealth of useful information about accommodation that's not included. Therefore, I think that for most LD or ADD students, this book is not very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Parents of LD kids
I found this guide to be just what I was looking for.By reviewing the admissions procedures for LD kids, and seeing the number of staff a university devotes to assisting students with disabilities I am able to direct my son to schools that can best help him.I was very encouraged to find the University of Arizona and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill among major colleges with strong programs.I bought a second copy to give to our high school. ... Book Description
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects approximately 5 percent of American school-age children. In a classroom of thirty, it is likely that at least one child will have ADHD. Symptoms include extreme levels of hyperactivity, inattention, and disruptive behavior. A Harvard University study published in September 2004 reported that students with ADHD are less likely than their non-ADHD peers to complete high school and less likely to attend college. The study found that on average those adults with ADHD have household incomes that are about $10,000 lower for high school graduates and $4,300 lower for college graduates, compared with those who do not have ADHD.

Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a concise, clearly written overview of the condition's symptoms and the range of possible treatments.

Chapters explain:--- How certain behavioral patterns can be misdiagnosed as ADHD --- How early diagnosis and treatment of the condition is critical --- How the various forms of the condition affect a child's psychology and socialization --- How parents can help to address the condition effectively

Understanding ADHD provides useful, up-to-date information on a condition that can be treated with early diagnosis and intervention. The book will prove useful to professionals and parents seeking a better understanding of children and childhood development. ... Read more
