Product Description
The skin provides the major protective barrier between the internal milieu of the body and the external environment. Moreover, the skin, together with its various components and appendages, mediates many kinds of dynamic interactions with the outside world, including thermoregulation, camouflage, behavioural displays, and flight. The mechanisms behind these interactions are all regulated by autonomic motor pathways, though some cases are better understood than others. This book reviews current knowledge regarding the structure and function of autonomic nerves and associated sensory nerves in the skin in a range of vertebrates, including the function of cutaneous autonomic nerves in humans in physiological and pathophysiological states.
With eminent contributors from around the world, this volume forms an essential and comprehensive reference work for the area and is an important addition to this acclaimed series. ... Read more

Product Description
With the remarkable increase in life expectancy in recent years, overall numbers of older individuals living with disability and functional dependence are likely to increase. Age-related changes and diseases involving the peripheral nervous system, particularly its autonomic elements, frequently play determining roles in late life health and functional independence. While basal sympathetic activity increases with normative aging, there is evidence of considerable dysregulation of the ability of the aging sympathetic nervous system to respond to a variety of challenges. In this book, investigators from several different disciplines discuss aging of the autonomic nervous system from a variety of perspectives. Given the fact that aging of the parasympathetic elements of the autonomic nervous system is not nearly as well understood as that of its sympathetic portions, greater emphasis has been placed on the latter. The topics of this volume provide an excellent overview. ... Read more

47. The autonomic nervous system;: An introduction to basic and clinical concepts
by Otto Appenzeller

Editorial Review

Product Description
The autonomic nervous system innervates every organ in the body. An understanding of autonomic function requires expertise in many basic disciplines that are beyond practical use to clinicians. In this fourth edition of The Autonomic Nervous System Professor Appenzeller has selected basic findings of clinical relevance and put them into perspective with autonomic dysfunction. New concepts of psychoneuroendocrinology and the discovery of numerous definitive and putative neurotransmitters centrally and in the periphery have led to a reappraisal of previous views and to the increasing complexity of autonomic nervous system regulation. There has been a steady increase in the size of this volume since it was first published in 1970. This reflects in part the change from an assessment of autonomic clinical deficits largely based on anecdotal accounts to objective measurements increasingly done with noninvasive methods of measuring autonomic function. The need for the application of basic knowledge of autonomic function to the clinical aspects of active lifestyles has brought together a host of specialists working in the areas of pain, sports medicine, and behavioral abnormalities. ... Excerpt: The autonomic nervous system (ANS or visceral nervous system) is the part of the peripheral nervous system that acts as a control system functioning largely below the level of consciousness, and controls visceral functions. The ANS affects heart rate, digestion, respiration rate, salivation, perspiration, diameter of the pupils, micturition (urination), and sexual arousal. Whereas most of its actions are involuntary, some, such as breathing, work in tandem with the conscious mind. It is classically divided into two subsystems: the parasympathetic nervous system and sympathetic nervous system. Relatively recently, a third subsystem of neurons that have been named 'non-adrenergic and non-cholinergic' neurons (because they use nitric oxide as a neurotransmitter) have been described and found to be integral in autonomic function, particularly in the gut and the lungs. With regard to function, the ANS is usually divided into sensory (afferent) and motor (efferent) subsystems. Within these systems, however, there are inhibitory and excitatory synapses between neurones. The enteric nervous system is sometimes considered part of the autonomic nervous system, and sometimes considered an independent system. The sympathetic nervous trunk consists of sympathetic ganglia running directly adjacent to the spinal column. The adrenal medulla can be considered a sympathetic ganglion; although separate from the main trunk, the sympathetic fibers run through the sympathetic trunk before synapsing in...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=166189 ... Product Description
The long tube that makes up the gastrointestinal tract is composed of a variety of tissue types and is the largest internal organ of the body. Its main function is to digest food and absorb the released nutrients. Furthermore, it is subdivided into functionally distinct regions that each mediate one of a variety of actions upon the food consumed, including ingestion, propulsion, secretion, digestion, absorption and expulsion. Autonomic neuronal circuitry is intimately involved in controlling many of these multiple functions of the gut, making it an appealing subject for the study of neuroscientists.
This book reviews the state of current knowledge on the innervation of the gut by the enteric nervous system, and its interface with the extrinsic innervation, from a number of different perspectives, with the aim of providing a comprehensive and accessible account of the subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book was worth the money! I have previous experience with strain counterstrain which may influence my review. This book was both readable and immediately applicable to my work as an Occupational Therapist. The techniques I have used have worked well with my neuro and pain patients.

2-0 out of 5 stars By the title, a little bit pretentious
There's no bibliagrafic references, end obviously the author did not visit the work of Alain Lignon: Schématisation neuro-vegetative en ostéopathie, Editions de Verlaque;And Le Systeme neuro-vegetatif et ses troubles functionnels, Roger Caporossi, Editions de Verlaque;

Product Description
Autonomic-Endocrine Interactions presents the first comprehensive account of the structure, physiology and chemistry of autonomic neuroendocrine interactions. The book introduces the evolution of the neuronal and endocrine systems and makes a detailed study of the receptors involved in signal transduction. It goes on to detail the autonomic innervation of each of the endocrine glands. It then switches viewpoint and examines the effects of the endocrine system on the autonomic nervous system, through the action of various hormones. ... Read more
