Description:
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders account for the largest single category of lost-time occupational injury or disease episodes in industrialized countries. In this study we analyzed the impact of the psychosocial work environment, conceptualized by the demand-control-support model, on the incidence of low back and neck injury in a cohort of 1221 public transit operators followed for 7 years and 6 months. The two main exposure variables were ''job strain'' (mismatch of high psychological demands and low decision latitude) and ''iso-strain'' (job strain plus exposure to low social support at work). Analyses controlled for demographic factors, physical workload, and pain at baseline. For low back injuries, increased hazard rates were found for job strain and iso-strain based on tertiles, with hazard ratios (HR) of 1.30 (95% CI=0.96-1.75) and 1.41 (95% CI=0.98-2.01), respectively. Job strain and iso-strain based on median split or analyzed as continuous variables were not associated with low back injuries. For neck injuries, job strain and iso-strain based on median split showed HRs of 1.27 (95% CI=0.99-1.63) and 1.33 (95% CI=1.01-1.77), respectively. Job strain and iso-strain based on tertiles had HRs of 1.52 (95% CI=1.13-2.05) and 1.73 (95% CI=1.21-2.45), respectively. When analyzed as continuous variables, a one-point increase on the job strain and iso-strain scales led to an 8% (95% CI=0.98-1.19) and 14% (95% CI=1.02-1.27) increased hazard of neck injuries, respectively. This study shows the importance of the psychosocial work environment in the etiology of musculoskeletal injuries among transit operators. Since reviews have shown that psychosocial workplace conditions in this occupational group can be changed, these findings indicate a potential for prevention at the workplace. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Really good support
I have had an anxiety disorder on and off for the past 3 years. I have been to many different doctors, therapists, etc. I really felt connected with Lee's story as I am in my 20's right now, and feel as though I am a bit lost at times. My only difficulty was that he stated that he "beat" it and knows how to avoid it from coming back. To me, mine has gone away twice already, but it keeps coming back. I'm having trouble understanding how to truly beat it. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who is suffering...it really feels like you are talking with a friend who understands. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life!!!
This book changed my life!!! It opened my eyes to BPD and what I had been living with for almost 5 years with my wife. I always knew something was wrong, but never knew what. It didn't save my marriage, but nothing could have done that. It allowed me to get free with a clear conscience and know that I wasn't at fault, that it wasn't me that was broken and that had destroyed the marriage.

4-0 out of 5 stars i liked the book because it was insightful.
I have a much better understanding of BPD as well as the loved-one who has it.It helps you empathize because of the additional knowledge gained and be able to better understand where the BPD person is coming from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book was amazing. It was exactly what I needed to hear about how to communicate with someone with BPD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop Walking on Eggshells

This is an incredibly well written book in easy to understand language. Everything in it is useful from understanding yourself to understanding the person that is inflicted with a behavioral disorder and causing the emotional abuse. If nothing else, this book will provide anyone that is a victim of emotional abuse some sence of direction and self worth, but it does provide so much more.Stop Walking on Eggshells: Taking Your Life Back When Someone You Care About Has Borderline Personality Disorder

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps me understand
I married a BPD person and had two children, divorced after 24 yrs of marriage. After reading this book, it has opened my eyes to the person I was married to, his mother, and now my daughter. How people can operate without a conscience has been beyond my comprehension. Then to justify their behavior, they twist the truth and blame others. To readStop Walking on Eggshells: Taking Your Life Back When Someone You Care About Has Borderline Personality Disorder that this behavior is really a mental illness, even in high functioning persons, helps me understand what I must do to have a (hopefully) decent relationship with my daughter and keep my sanity.I recommend this book highly to anyone who is living with or has lived with someone who shows signs of borderline personality disorder. It is well written and advises non-BPD's how to take care of themselves. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent pick for those who don't want to be defined by an event
Letting one's life be controlled by one traumatic event is no way to live. "Conquering Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: The Newest Techniques for Overcoming Symptoms, Regaining Hope, and Getting Your Life Back" is a guide for the afflicted in dealing with the anxieties related to such things so that they can get their life back on track. With much advice on improving one's mood, building supportive relationships, and getting over the event, "Conquering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder" is an excellent pick for those who don't want to be defined by an event.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conquering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
This is an excellent book. Post Traumatic Stress can have many crippling effects on the way one socialized and lived. If you have been through one
or a series of violent events, or seen them. There are exercises to help you cope and either rid yourself of them or know how to deal with them if they have really gotten into your inner being, and can be tapped into a lifetime.
Even many troubling events we hear about (9/11) can get inside us. I feel
sorry for what our Iraq soldiers go through when they come home, and hope they get the awareness or techniques to help. This is best to work with
in conjunction with a therapist. Many are very aware of this problem and how to help you work through it...plus other techniques. Friends as support systems to are greatly helpful. Very very good activities that help!

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for everyone
Perceptive, insightful and well-written.I would recommend this book to
anyone who has any contact with PTSD issues. It should be obligatory to anyone who has experienced trauma on any level.Dr. Lemle Beckner is a gifted writer and original thinker.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!! This amazing book gave me the inspiration & strength that I needed.
My Son was recently diagnosed with Bipolar 1, and I have been through many, many books, and other informational sources regarding this illness, but none helped me more than this book by B.C. Levinson. It is truly an amazing and inspirational accounting of a Mother's love, determination, and devotion to her Daughter when she learns that she has been diagnosed with Bipolar 1. It is a story of courage and determination that gave me the hope and strength I needed to confront this illness with my Son. For anyone or any Family effected by this disease it is a must read!! For that matter, it really is a story of devotion and love that would be beneficial for anyone to read. God Bless this Author for sharing her and her Daughter's story. It gave me strength when I needed most.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable Insight into Bipolar 1 - Powerfull and Deeply Moving
`I Just Want My Daughter Back' is indeed a highly personal account of emotions when Bipolar 1 enters your otherwise `normal' life. The authors' daughter, Steph is a wonderful, caring and intelligent teenager providing love and strength to the family.

All is soon about to change. The onset of mental illness arrives taking Steph and her mom on a harrowing journey in search of information to treat this highly dangerous condition. The tale is written with undeviating love and compassion that a parent has for their child when faced with dire circumstances.

Highly recommended for all who have been touched by this insidious condition--Bipolar 1.
