Book Description
One of the premier clinical dermatology references since 1930, this classic text covers clinical presentation and therapy for a full range of common and rare skin diseases. Its concise, clinically focused, user-friendly approach has made it a favorite through nine best-selling editions. The authors, all well-respected clinicians, balance evidence-based treatment guidelines with valuable anecdotal advice validated by many years of clinical experience. Now appearing in full color for the first time, over 1,500 brand-new photographs depict diseases exactly the way they present in real life. And, a new, consistent organization makes information even easier to find than ever before. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This is a must have for all dermatologists. This book is small in size, but massive in content.I have always said, "If it ain't in Andrews', it ain't worth knowing." and this is still true of this version. This edition has great color pictures (although I always thought that the B&W photos in the previous editions were so terrific that you could still "see" the color in them.).This is another book that you really shouldn't be without whether you are a resident or practicing dermatologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Dermatology Text
This is a must have book for non-dermatologists and dermatologists alike. This text has replaced Habif as the traditional textbook for non-dermatologists, because of its concise straightforward approach to dermatology, making it easily understood by the non-dermatologist.For the dermatologist, it is simple to read, but not lacking in depth, such that it can serve as the main textbook for refreshing the information learned during residency without getting bogged down with useless minutia.I use this as the textbook of choice on a daily basis.

4-0 out of 5 stars alex em dept
one of the best dermo books i've read but.... a little gap: the work lacking a chapter concerning burn care. i think this items it's very importantfor a modern dermatology.
so, I regret to give only 4 stars, taking in account that the chapters of the book are concise, well done, showing the best practical approach, in comparison to other dermo text bks.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT NEW EDITION
Forget the hype about Bolognia, this is the best book on clinical dermatology out there today. Written by three of the top clinical dermatologists in the country, there is a unity of writing and approach and and a consistent high quality level that you don't get with texts with hundreds of co-authors (many of whom are in training themselves). There is also a refreshing aspect that this book is written for practicing dermatologists and avoids much of the incomprehensibility of so-called academic dermatology texts. Andrews is much improved over the last edition with color photos and the input from Dirk Elston, one of the most prolific dermatogists in the country. This is the one book EVERY dermatologist should have on his desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars nice addition to any traveler's bookshelf
As an expatriate and frequent traveler in the tropics, I'm interested in some of the more obscure diseases I might encounter. This book is aimed at physicians and healthcare workers, but would be a nice addition to any traveler's bookshelf. It's an excellent compendium of all (105 to be exact) the human parasites out there, some of which can be acquired in surprising ways (detailed in one of the many lists). Forty-two are distributed worldwide, and for a few others, the exact geographic distribution is unknown. The particularly scary thing about some is that they may not manifest for months, and then in some strange and mysterious form. Like the oriental lung fluke (Paragonimus), for example, which can migrate to the brain. A lot of this information is not otherwise available except in fat medical tomes, which are often outdated. In addition to useful medical information on diagnosis and treatment, the authors provide a lot of interesting "factoids," including descriptions of actual cases and outbreaks. More pictures might be nice, but that would add to the weight (it does contain many parasite life cycle drawings borrowed from the CDC). The ring-bound small format makes it easy to carry and use. I'm headed to Southeast Asia again in a couple of months and plan to pack it along with Dr. Berger's "Exotic Viral Diseases." And I won't forget to wash my hands. ... Read more

Product Description
The sample chapter succinctly outlines what is currently known about the SARS virus. The coverage includes: agent, reservoir, vehicle, incubation period, clinical hints, typical therapy, disease distribution, extensive notes, clinical presentation, specimens for diagnostic study, patient isolation precautions, suggested assays for virus detection, serodiagnosis, and additional readings and Web sites for further information. The world is becoming smaller, and health care workers are increasingly confronted with heretoforeexoticandrarediseases contracted in or otherwise introduced from distant countries. Exotic Viral Disease: A Global Guide is written for the clinician, and deals with the epidemiology, signs, symptoms, and treatment of all unusual viral infections of man. The authors are among the leading opinion makers in the field of Geographic Medicine, and have collected a wealth of important, practical, and up-to-date information that would otherwise be unavailable in one source to physicians. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for the ID groupie or world traveler
This book is a must-have for theID groupie as well as expert, or anyone with a morbid fascination for bioterrorism. A notation with each monograph indicates whether the agent is a potential bioweapon and includes BSL classification.. Notes at the beginning of each monograph explain the origin of viral names (O'nyong nyong fever means "weakening of the joints in the Acholi dialect of Uganda, Nipah virus is named after Baru Sungai Nipa village in Malaysia, etc). World travelers, especially those going "off the beaten track," will find it or the accompanying CD, handy to carry along, a great way to impress or scare the daylights out of fellow travelers. Though intended for physicians, others will find it concisely written and easy to follow, with a little help a medical dictionary at times. Finding this info from another source, even on the web, might be difficult.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for non-epidemiologists
I was first introduced to the writing of Stephen Berger through his work with ProMed, the infectious disease e-mail newsletter, and he and the other two editors are certainly among the best qualified to write this guide.

For the 55 diseases that were chosen, and well presented in an average 4-page/disease format, this non-epidemiologist found just about everything he could wish for: clear understandable prose, complete up-to-date notes with web-links,means of transmission, and so-far effective diagnostic tests, vaccines, and treatments (and their side effects).

For anyone slightly medically inclined with an interest in communicable/viral disease who wants to be knowledgeable about what's "out there", this is a first rate contribution and should not be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect companion to the CCDM
This compact paperback is smaller (4x6x1/2") than The Control of Communicable Diseases Manual (CCDM). But Exotic Viral Diseases begins where the latter leaves off. Arranged in alphabetical order, fifty-five individual viral diseases are each discussed over an average of four pages using a similar format to the CCDM. But there is much more: Telegraphic "clinical hints", geographical distributions and typical therapy are listed for each disease. An occasional table leavens the text, and a complete list of nearly 150 really obscure viral agents is included at the end. Four tables summarize all the diseases by arthropod vector and non-arthropod modes of transmission, usual and unusual animal reservoirs, and major syndrome complexes. Three appendices discuss sample collection/shipping, diagnostic tests, and drugs/vaccines/adverse effects. An introduction explaining the rationale and need for the book and an index sandwich a tremendous amount of information into 252 pages. Up to date references and web addresses for additional reading end the discussion of the fifty-five diseases.
An exciting bonus is a three inch CD that contains the book's complete text and illustrations in searchable PDF files. (Publisher, BC Decker, Inc, [Hamilton, Ontario] refers to this format as BcD [Book cum Disc]). The book and text are sold as a package, which might explain the price (which is the same as the CCDM).
The three editors should be well known the Infectious Disease Community. Stephen A. Berger is also a familiar name to those have visited ProMed, or used GIDEON. He is a regular contributor to ProMED and one of its annual early award winners. He invented the idea of GIDEON a decade ago, and continues to update this valuable source of infectious disease epidemiology. Charles H. Calisher is an internationally known arbovirologist, and master charientist. Jay S. Keystone is a noted Canadian infectious disease expert.
Limitations? There are no ICD-9 or 10 codings for the diseases, but this minor, unless you're a coder. Monkeypox is discussed, but the coronavirus implicated in SARS is not. Both have become less than exotic, and may not need to be listed here. Zoonotic viral diseases are largely omitted except those that have been transmitted to humans. If and when they are, they'll be in the next edition of this book. My favorite orphan zoonosis, Bornavirus, was also neglected.
Exotic Viral Diseases belongs next to the CCDM. Unlike the new edition of the Redbook that cannot be easily carried in one's pocket, Exotic Viral Diseases fits nicely into a pocket and supplements the CCDM in a number of settings. It's worth the price!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book to Learn General Dermatology
I will go ahead and be completely candid and truthful with my review on this book. This I know will go very unfavorable with everyone out there and the universal notion that this is the greatest book to ever come out on Dermatology. I'll be the leper of that group.

The book, which covers the major aspects of most if not every dermatological disease is very thorough in scope though extremely and poorly organized. This is the downfall of this book which for completion purposes just scans over the major point in an extremely wide part of medicine, Dermatology. You have the book mention something in passing and then for no reason in a later section would go back to what it covered with more details. I have no idea why that happens a lot in this book. I admit there are excellent chapters out there, but their poor organization and lack of reasonable trend just puts the book off. The book may have the right wording and the ease in language, but simply fails to put things together in a coherent way. Another major problem is that the book's pictures are B&W. In a time where color images are ubiquituous, this is not acceptable.A lot of people I know have mentioned these negative features, though they still like the book because it's the only book out there that they can carry around and still look through between clinics or grand rounds.

I believe that for residents out there, that books like Ftizpatrick, the critically-acclaimed Bolognia and the bible Rook should be required reading for all residents to build the basis of sound, strong and a lasting base for their Dermatology education. Andrew's could be used for a fast quick reference, but not the one that should be counted on making life and death decisions in dermatological care. Andrew's is good, but not that great and certainly not even closest to being the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different way to look at dermatology specialty
Ialways find myself reading andrews' dermatology textbook when I want something fast, accurate, but unique about any dermatology theme on my dermatology practice. I think this book a must among derm textbooks. The references are clear and the authors go right to the point when explaining any dermatology condition. It doesn't go further as Fitzpatrik or Rook, but I like the authors point of view about therapy of any condition. I consider it a "cult" book. Perhaps it should not be a reference book, but it addssomething more, with short texts, tothe traditional textbooks, though photos could bein colors.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolute must
can't emphasize it enough--plenty of derm boards fodder contained in this text.extremely high yield.a much easier read than fitzpatrick.

I just read this new edition from cover-to-cover in preparation for the dermatology boards and I am very impressed! The new edition is updated not only in therapeutics but also in the latest in genetic defects underlying the genodermatoses that the boards love so much. It concisely covers clinical dermatology in a very readable format. One thing it lacks is an organized chapter on therapeutics. ... Read more
