Robert Goldman holds a Ph.D. in steroid biochemistry, founded the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and is an adviser to the Journal of Longevity Research. In Brain Fitness, he makes a valid point that's been proven by recent studies: your brainpower, like the muscles of your body, can be expanded through exercise. And with the life expectancy of humans nearly doubling in the past century, he says, paying attention to your cognitive skills and taking steps to ward off Alzheimer's is becoming more and more vital.

Through various self-quizzes, charts, and self-tests, Brain Fitness helps you determine what state your brain is in now--and helps you boost your memory power accordingly. Some of the information is surprising (such as that over-the-counter painkillers like ibuprofen have been shown to inhibit brain function and memory with long-term use). Some other parts, such as the section on how chronic stress can inhibit your health, has shown up in all of the numerous anti-aging books of late. But for baby boomers interested in learning about what the aging process is doing to their memories--and what they can do to boost their brain power--Brain Fitness is a good place to start.Book Description
As medicine continues to increase longevity, it becomes more and more vital for us all to keep the mind healthy and vigorous.

As a cofounder and director of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, Dr. Robert Goldman has at his fingertips all of the latest scientific research on what each of us can do not only to retain all our mental powers as long as we live but also to actually strengthen and improve our mind-power as we age.

Now he shares that information, in a layperson's terms, with numerous self-tests, information charts, and quizzes, so that we all can improve memory, sharpen concentration, reduce stress, learn to sleep better, and--above all--ward off the devastation of Alzheimer's disease.

Goldman discusses the many nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, and medications that have been proved to enhance mental fitness, providing specific doses and regimens. But beyond that, he also describes particular exercises and lifestyle techniques designed to sharpen mental acuity.

As medicine continues to increase longevity, and it becomes more vital for us all to keep the mind healthy and vigorous, Brain Fitness is destined to become our bible for the new millennium. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference book on the subject
The book quality is somewhat erratic from chapter to chapter. But, there is a lot of valuable information in it.This is especially true regarding all the micro nutrients, vitamins, herbal supplements that are good to maintain your cognitive skills.Through the years I find myself referring to this book very often.Although the book was written a few years ago, it appears very current.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fellow physician/"brain-author" agrees with premise of this.
As more and more research suggests, there are ways that, by altering your lifestyle and intake, as well as your basic brain activity, you can possibly curtail what we traditionally think of as an"inevitable" aging process of the brain and its function. Dr.Goldman reviews many of these tools available, a number of which in fact,(despite other reviewer comments to the contrary), DO have peer-reviewedscientific studies to back them up.May I suggest "The Care andFeeding of Your Brain" as a companion guide to Goldman's book toprovide another perspective on how you can affect brain aging, and for amore general view of brain optimization right now, before aging...Mycongratulations to Dr. Goldman and colleagues on a book well done and easyto read!...All the best...Kenneth Giuffre'MD, author, "The Care andFeeding of Your Brain"

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, discouraging, and mildly offensive
The author needs to determine who his audience is.The book seems to be aimed at young people seeking to achieve and maintain 'super mind power'.The title (anti-aging) appeals to those of us who are experiencing 'brainfog' and want it to stop. While the tests will confirm or rebut oursuspicions that something is wrong, the author suggests only the same-oldhome remedies - diet, vitamins and herbs, destress - that I have been usingfor years already. The mental excersizes are a bad joke - things I used tolove doing when my mind was functional are now proposed as excersizes -which I couldn't do if my life depended upon it. There is nothingsuggested in the way of medical treatment or what to tell a doctor toconvince them that 'something is wrong'.Many things I have read about, found to be helpful and consider somewhat more cutting-edge - like oxygentherapy or the debate regarding the danger in dental fillings - are noteven mentioned.Human growth hormone is dismissed in one sentance. If Ibelieved this book, I would give up all hope.

1-0 out of 5 stars You need cognitive enhancement if you accept this.
This book has value. It will test your IQ. If you accept it as authoritative on cognition and memory, then you may need cognitive enhancement. It appears to be more for ego enhancement. Look for theauthror's contributions to the field in peer-reviewed journals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely educational and informational!
This book completely changed the way I looked at nutrition for the brain. It really makes you re-think your view on your personal self and lets you know that you are capable of so much more than what you're doing. Dr.Goldman did an outstanding job relating his personal goals and the goals ofother prominent people is society. He brings to life the realities of"famous people are just like ordinary people." This bookdefinitely changed the way I look at growing old.Age is inevitable, butaging is not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, Chronic pain is real and hurts you in many ways, how to cope.
There comes a time in many people's lives where chronic pain happens for many reasons. It is depressing. You have pain, a lot. No one wants to listen to you talk about it. Your complications from the chronic pain are very real, yet no one wants to discuss this with you. They are real. You must accept yourself where you are, do what you can to help yourself and be assertive, yet accept you may be a bit different than you were when well. You will win in the end. This book will help you.Help with the side effects of chronic pain

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing Pain
Despite the title, Healing Pain does not focus on relieving physical pain. This book looks beyond the physical aspects of pain into the often hidden aspects of emotional suffering associated with chronic pain. The author, a pain management specialist, reflects that chronic pain, be it from cancer, fibromyalgia, or an acute injury that never fully healed, have some very specific things in common. The most significant of these aspects is the overall emotional toll that it takes on the individual and his or her family. The nature of chronic pain, depression, guilt, and concerns over potential addictions to pain medicines are just a few of the very important topics discussed in this book. Exercises, topics for journaling, and step by step programs to alleviate emotional pain are also dispersed throughout this important groundbreaking text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful , helpful and a gripping read.
"Healing Pain" delivers.I'm ordering copies for a family member who has MS; an attorney friend specializing in elder law, many of whose clients deal with chronic pain; and a friend studying for the Episcopal priesthood who has already served as a hospital chaplain, meeting many patients coping with pain. These friends don't have time or energy for reading books that come up empty. This one looked promising, based on the author's credentials as an oncologist specializing in pain management. It turns out that she's had cancer herself. On many levels, and in the most personal way, she knows what she's talking about. There are real answers here.

3-0 out of 5 stars fine, but not enough detail
i got this book for my then-3yo daughter, who asked a ton about how germs work and how our bodies fight them. it was "kinda" enough for her, but then we got cell wars, and that is really a fantastic book. where this book can be hand-wavy, that one is much more detailed and really left her feeling like she understood what was happening in her body. she's 4 now and still rattles off information from cell wars, but we haven't read this book but once or twice since we got the other.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!
Germs Make Me Sick by Melvin Berger is one of the best books I've seen to educate primary grade children about viruses and bacteria and how they can make you sick -- and how you can make yourself well again. Sometimes, your Doctor will have to send a swab or a drop of your blood to a lab to see just the right way to make you well if your illness is caused by a bacteria or protect you from some diseases caused by a virus.

I am amazed at how well this scientific information is presented for young readers, and the follow-up with a section on The Rules for Good Health make this a must buy for parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the cartoons, and I learned something too
Every illustration in this book is a cartoon, and in many of the illustrations a cat, dog, lion, or some other animal will make some kind of random comment. This was pretty funny, but not quite as funny as the cartoons in another Lets-Read-and-Find-Out Science book called Digging Up Dinosaurs.

According to this book, the sticky saliva in your mouth catches germs and prevents them from going inside your body to cause further damage.I didn't know that.Hope all the information is correct.

5-0 out of 5 stars When my kids were sick, this was one of two books we always read...
My children, now 19 and 17, loved this book.I guess they were about 6 and 4 when I got it.Whenever they were sick, we read this book and a Sesame Street book called "It's No Fun to be Sick."Reading these books became a comforting ritual, as well as an easy way to learn some basic science.

3-0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity to teach about hygiene
Although this book is thorough in describing the differences between viruses and bacteria, I think it misses an important opportunity to reinforce hygiene...wash your hands, cover your mouth etc. These are given a cursory review on the last page, with no accompanying illustration.I had hoped that this book would help my almost-4-year-old to understand how people get sick, how they get well, and how they can help prevent communicable disease to reinforce what I teach at home.I do not think that the authors did a very good job of meeting those expectations. ... Book Description
Geology and Health is an integration of papers from geo-bio-chemical scientists on health issues of concern to humankind worldwide, demonstrating how the health and well-being of populations now and in the future can benefit through coordinated scientific efforts. International examples on dusts, coal, arsenic, fluorine, lead, mercury, and water borne chemicals, that lead to health effects are documented and explored. They were selected to illustrate how hazards and potential hazards may be from natural materials and processes and how anthropomorphic changes may have contributed to disease and debilitation instead of solutions.Introductory essays by the editors highlight some of the progress toward scientific integration that could be applied to other geographic sites and research efforts. A global purview and integration of earth and health sciences expertise could benefit the future of populations from many countries. Effective solutions to combat present and future hazards will arise when the full scope of human interactions with the total environment is appreciated by the wide range of people in positions to make important and probably expensive decisions. A case to illustrate the point of necessary crossover between Geology and Health was the drilling of shallow tube wells in Bangladesh to provide non-contaminated ground water. This "good" solution unfortunatelymobilized arsenic from rocks into the aquifer and created an unforeseen or 'silent' hazard: arsenic.Geologists produce maps of earth materials and are concerned with natural processes inthe environment with long time-frame horizons. The health effects encountered through changing the water source might have been avoided if the hydrological characteristics of the Bangladesh delta had been known and any chemical hazards had been investigated anddocumented.A recurrence of this type of oversight should be avoidable when responsible parties, often governmentofficials, appreciate the necessity ofsuch integrated efforts. The book extols the virtues of cooperation between the earth, life and health sciences, as the most practical approach to better public health worldwide. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The New Field of Geomedicine
The Editorsof 'Geology and Health' have produced a collection of papers that will be of great interest to medical specialists, biologists, and geologists. Interdisciplinary studies on natural hazzards such as arsenic in groundwater and geochemical concentrations of toxic heavy metals in soils are required to understand the origins and pathways of some diseases. This new interest in geomedicine has been stimulated by EPA regulations and by advanced laboratory intstruments that produce extremely accurate chemical data on toxic concentrations in water, soil, and air. If allergies make you wheeze, sneeze, drip, itch, puff, or droop, or if asthma makes you feel like an elephant is standing on your chest, you'll want to read Allergies and Asthma for Dummies. Author William Berger, M.D., M.B.A., knows his stuff. He is a practicing allergist, a member of the task force that developed national guidelines for treating allergic diseases, and a former staff allergist for the U.S. Olympic Swim Team.

You get much more than the basics here. You learn how to prevent and treat the common types of allergies, with extensive information on hay fever and skin rashes, and short but helpful sections on allergic reactions to food, drugs, and insects. The asthma section is especially comprehensive, with instructions for recognizing and managing asthma triggers, monitoring air flow, selecting the best medications for both short-term and long-term relief, and special considerations for pregnant women and children. The book covers both self-help and pharmacological treatment methods in depth, but not alternative treatments.

One of the most helpful chapters is "Relieving Your Rhinitis," which will appeal especially to the 45 million Americans who suffer from hay fever. Allergic rhinitis (the medical term) is not a fever and is caused not by hay, but rather by airborne pollen from grasses, trees, and weeds. The commonly used over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays may not be your best choice, says Berger. He describes the uses and advantages of recommended prescription drugs, and advises a medical evaluation to choose the right one for you.

The book's style, though still easy to understand, is not as casual or humorous as the typical For Dummies book. This may be because Berger is more intent on packing a bundle of helpful medical information into the book than being witty. --Joan PriceBook Description
Sneezing. Sniffling. Hives. Rashes. Burning eyes. Runny nose. Sinus headache. Scratchy throat. Asthma attacks.... Whether you’re reacting to pollen or peanuts, your boyfriend’s cat or your girlfriend’s pooch, your husband’s aftershave, or your neighbor’s barbecue, allergies are definitely a drag. And if left untreated, the symptoms can lead to bigger health problems down the road. Sadly, there is no cure for hypersensitivity disorders, as doctors call them. But you can minimize your risk of having allergic reactions and you can live symptom-free. And Allergies and Asthma For Dummies tells you how.

If you suffer from some type of allergic condition and/or asthma, this complete, down-to-earth guide can be your first big step toward feeling better than you’ve felt in years. I got this book about two weeks after my 9-year-old son suffered his first asthma attack. After reading it, I feel much better prepared to cope with his condition. The author's tone is reassuring without being condescending. And there is an enormous amount of information, everything from how to choose a specialist to charts describing the effects and usual dosages of the most common medications. Since I have been suffering from allergies and sinus problems myself this spring, it was especially useful. I think this might be the best investment in our family's health I ever made!

In her eighth year, Torrey began receiving the best treatment conventional medicine could offer for her illness. This treatment did not offer a long range prognosis of life or a good quality of living through it.The author and her husband made an agonizing choice to change treatment. The choice was Immuno-Augmentative Therapy, an almost unknown alternative method of treating cancer.

In the midst of this trial the author realized "that life is a journey, and this journey is toward God."The family learned that trust in God and knowledge of his love are essential.

This is a true story of an ordinary family's triumph over a fatal illness, and of love over fear. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars real-life inspiration
CHOICES tells a down-to-earth inspirational story and provides an eye opening education, as well.As a mother of two small children, I found myself thinking it would be as difficult to see my children endure chemotherapy or radiation cancer treatment as it would the disease. The parents in this story made the difficult and risky decision to stop commonly prescribed treatments, then chose an alternative therapy. It was new and virtually unaccepted in this country, but it made sense. The therapy, called IAT, was easy, non-toxic, and treated the root of the disease; the weak immune system.Anyone who has cancer or who knows someone with cancer should read this book and learn that there are other treatments available for this disease. The faith and courage of this family made this book more than a cancer treatment text.It made me think about something that could happen to anyone in our family.

4-0 out of 5 stars From one of Torrey's doctors
At the time that Torrey was diagnosed, patients with her form of lymphoma received a lengthy course of chemotherapy. About three months into treatment, Torrey's parents chose to stop chemotherapy and take her to the Bahamas for alternative medical treatment. They also continued to pray for her healing. Several years after Torrey started her journey, clinical trials of the type of chemo she received demonstrated that a child with Torrey's stage of disease needed no more than three months of treatment.

Did the short course of chemo cure Torrey? Or Dr. Burton's treatment? Or was it divine intervention? I'll vote for #1 and #3, including the divine wisdom given a doctor to allow the Morses' to discontinue Torrey's medical treatment against the medical wisdom of the day. At that same era in history, colleagues at a nearby hospital were taking parents to court for stopping chemotherapy in favor of Laetrile for a child.

Today I can no more endorse Dr. Burton's immunoaugmentive treatment than I could after careful study twenty-odd years ago. But I've learned not to reject alternative/complementary out of hand. Instead I've chosen to investigate the evidence that a particular regimen is useful or at least harmless. It is far better to open up communication between patient and doctor rather than letting a wall build up between you.

"Choices" is yet another lesson that we can live through the same set of historical events and yet see it and interpret events in very different ways. Clearly, the most important thing is not interpretation but that today Torrey is a beautiful and healthy young woman and her mother had I have become friends. Sometimes mothers just KNOW things. It's well worth reading their story to ponder how you are going to write your own story and talk to your own doctor--and your God.

5-0 out of 5 stars What can I do?
This book was helpful to several friends who had cancer and did not know where to turn when the doctor said chemo was the only way to go.Pneumonia is not a better way to go when chemo breaks down the immune system. This book gives alternate choices. It is short. It is easy to read.It gives names and phone numbers andinformation on how to find aternative treatment. Don't give up! READ THIS BOOK!Have your friends buy it, read it and keep it for reference. It is not too late. You can call IAT.You can discuss your type of cancer. You can fax your records.DO IT NOW! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars IT'S AN EXCELENT BOOK
... Read more
