5-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium can save your life.
Although it is not commonly known, deficiency of magnesium is a significant risk factor for various forms of heart disease. One of the major causes of heart attacks -- which can occur even in people with ideal cholesterol levels and virtually no arterial blockage -- is a spasm of the muscles surrounding a coronary artery. Deficiency of magnesium is the most common cause of such arterial spasms, and approximately 80% of Americans suffer from some degree of magnesium deficiency. Magnesium deficiency can also contribute to cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. And magnesium deficiency is also a major cause of heart irregular heart beats and heart palpitations. (Another deficiency which can cause these symptoms is deficiency of potassium, but magnesium deficiency is generally the more common cause.) Doctors can temporarily stabilize irregular heart beats with injections of a magnesium compound, but they rarely do so except in emergency situations. However, people with an irregular heart beat caused by magnesium deficiency can generally cure the problem simply by taking 500 mg to 1,000 mg of a magnesium supplement daily -- and, in doing so they also help protect themselves from heart attacks and congestive heart failure, as mentioned above.

The preferred form of supplemental magnesium is chelated magnesium because it is readily absorbed by the body and also because other forms of supplemental magnesium may cause diarrhea.

Although the emphasis in this book is on the role of magnesium in maintaining a healthy heart, it should be noted that magnesium can also help prevent headaches and muscular cramps and is a natural relaxant which can help relieve anxiety disorders and counteract stress. Please read this book and be sure that you are getting enough magnesium -- one of the most frequently overlooked nutrients.

4-0 out of 5 stars A shocking, well-researched expose of how the gov't made hiv
EMERGING VIRUSES, AIDS AND EBOLA: Nature, Accident or Intentional? by Leonard G. Horowitz, D.M.D. Horowitz is a dentist who got drawn into AIDS research when investigating the Acer/Bergalis AIDS contamination case several years ago. His conclusion: Dr. Acer intentionally infected his dental patients because he felt that the U.S. government had maliciously created HIV. Like a determined blood hound, Horowitz kept after this story, nailing down every lead, every paper, every person. He interviewed, he delved into cartons of old files, he compared medical research articles, he looked at corporate/government collusions. The result- -combining Horowitz's story of the research with the research itself--is well worth the price. A key piece of evidence is a 1970 government document budgeting money for a biological weapon for which there is no known cure nor natural immunity. HIV, according to Horowitz, was probably spread with the early Hepatitis B vaccine trials in the gay community in the late '70s. Population control, CIA biological warfare tests on the general public, widespread contamination of polio and other vaccines, and Nazi influence in public policy are just a few of the topics Horowitz weaves together to illustrate this wedding of bad intentions and medical technology. Now that I've read this shocking book, I wonder: Now what? Will this groundbreaking, gutsy book make a difference?

5-0 out of 5 stars Malthusianism and Higher Forms of Killing, Cattle Mutilation
This book will shock you and make you research more about the consequences of biologicals manufactured and unleashed. The author has gathered a lot of material and evidence indicating that "AIDS" and Gulf War Syndrome have been deliberately unleashed, with "AIDS" appearing first and introduced into select communtities of White educated young gay men, beginning in New York and New Jersey in 1978, supported by documentations presented by Dr. Alan Cantwell Jr., MD, ally of Dr. Horowitz. You can do further research by reading Dr. Cantwell's books, 'Aids And the Doctors of Death' and 'Queer Blood'. Dr. Horowitz does not mince words when he points to the direction of our very own military "adventures" which have sought to develop biologicals which would be refractory to the human auto-immune system, eg., "AIDS"$$, or as Dr. Eva Sneed puts it, 'Some Call It AIDS, I call It Murder', see book! Well, if this review is not censored, then consider yourself lucky to have this vital info regarding the "NEW ORDER" and its most hidden objectives, which is Malthusian in scope, to drastically and severely reduce human populations on planet Earth. You donot hve to wait to hear any of this seemingly "outlandish" stuff on the Art Bell show, just BUY THIS BOOK right now, and order several for your friends, too, and they won't ever think of being complacent in light of Horowitz's incredible book! Isn't this what "glasnost" should be about in this Democratic Republic, and getting truth revealed......eventually!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to know why the goverment does this read on...
I applaud the courage of Leonard Horowitz in exposing the truth about what the government has been up to for a long time. As a researcher I have uncovered many things that are almost too ugly to be believed. There are many out there wondering why anyone inside the government or out would do such hideous things. I strongly recommend the readers of this review to read the book "Bringers of the Dawn" by Barbara Marciniak. This book may also be hard to believe but the pieces of the puzzle will come together when you read this book. But hang on to your seats. If you also purchase the book "Power vs. Force" by Dr. David Hawkins, you will find a technique that will show you how to prove or disprove anything in either of the above books (or anything else for that matter). The answers are out there. We just have to keep searching. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating comparative analysis of a tragic set of events
This trenchant edited volume dissects a series of critical events that, while prominent in the public realm, have yet to receive adequate attention from students of social and political affairs -- the explosive scandals that rocked many nations after public health officials became aware of HIV contamination of domestic and international blood supplies. These events represent not only a fascinating and tragic historical episode in their own right, but also provide a revealing window into the response of national leaders to symbolically and politically potent crises under conditions of uncertainty, anxiety, and fear.

The essays in this volume, all written by country experts and notable social scientists, examine the comparative response to the tainted blood crisis in eight advanced industrial democracies: Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States. The questions asked in the case studies, in the fine opening chapter by Bayer and Feldman, and in the excellent concluding chapter by Marmor, Dillon, and Scher include:

* Should national leaders have responded more quickly to the evidence that hemophiliacs and other blood transfusion recipients were becoming infected with HIV?

* What accounts for the differences and similarities among nations in the speed and character of the eventual response?

* Why did the tainted blood crisis become high political scandal in some nations -- such as France -- and not others, especially since the severity of the scandals does not seem to correlate directly with the speed and effectiveness of national leaders' responses?

* What does this historical episode tell us about the influence of political institutions on policy outcomes? And what does it say about the relative performance of different national blood products regimes? Did it matter, for example, whether donors were paid or not, or whether nations were self-sufficient with regard to blood products rather than importing them from abroad?

* What was the process through which hemophiliac groups and other affected parties came to see their greivances as legal and political claims against their governments and, at times, against the very organizations that had once represented them?

* How can such tragedies be prevented in the future?

This is, in short, a vital book for all those interested in this important chapter in the history of the AIDs tragedy, as well as for those who wish to learn more about how nations with very different cultures and political institutions respond to a common medical disaster. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A First Person Picture Book
This book is an illustrated compilation of brief (1-4 paragraph), first-person narratives by victims, family, and workers in the HIV/AIDS epidemic in southern Africa. There are more pages of photos than of text. Photos are well-done and powerful. The book does much to give the reader an insider's view of the AIDS tragedy and its impact at the personal and family level. It does not address the problem analytically at all; you'll need other books for that. This one is like sitting in the waiting room of the HIV clinic, or on the floor of the hut, and talking to the people about their stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Thorough Debunking of the Virus/AIDS Hypothesis
Shenton's book is the best work I've read yet that questions the link between HIV (or ANY virus, for that matter)and AIDS. Anyone who reads this book will be utterly transfixed by it. It is both fascinating and frightening to read about the unanswered questions that continue to vex scientists, researchers and the like about the supposed link between HIV and AIDS. What is more frightening, however, is the extent to which these individuals will go to prevent these gaps in AIDS theory from becoming public knowledge, and how they refuse even to entertain any other possible explanation(s) for AIDS other than their precious "virus." Meanwhile, people continue dying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives intelligent reader the knowledge to choose sides
Shenton's telling of a decade of investigation is a complementary part of the AIDS puzzle in main started and mostly filled in by scientists Robert Root-Bernstein and Peter Duesberg; - and Shenton journalistic comrades such as Jad Adams and Michael Fumento. Deductive, objective analysis of all the medical "reporting" of the AIDS statistics have always led to the realization that "you can't get there from here" in trying to understand what the establishment (NIH, CDC, WHO, etc.) has almost successfully rammed down the throats of Americans, and in doing so has killed tens to hundreds of thousands of patients decades before their time. The immense value of Shenton's work is that it is a lifesaving read for those who want to make their own decisions when confronted by a blood test that comes back "positive" for HIV antibodies as one can then refuse to be a fatal victim of the toxic therapy that is currently in vogue, and in fact one can then proceed to take the proper steps to fully recovered health as pointed to by this book and the other authors cited above. ... Editorial Review

In the first major book on AIDS, San Francisco Chronicle reporter Randy Shilts examines the making of an epidemic. Shilts researched and reported the book exhaustively, chronicling almost day-by-day the first five years of AIDS. His work is critical of the medical and scientific communities' initial response and particularly harsh on the Reagan Administration, who he claims cut funding, ignored calls for action and deliberately misled Congress. Shilts doesn't stop there, wondering why more people in the gay community, the mass media and the country at large didn't stand up in anger more quickly. The AIDS pandemic is one of the most striking developments of the late 20th century and this is the definitive story of its beginnings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Encouraged me to Ride My Bike 350 Miles
I read this book several years ago, and the effect of that reading is still making an impact on my life.

Randy Shilts blends science, sexuality, politics and humanity into a gripping and emotion-provoking story detailing the rise of the AIDS Epidemic. By drawing the readers into the lives of individuals and communities at the core of the epidemic, Shilts gives them the opportunity to see how the epidemic developed and spread, and the ways in which it was allowed to spread further, thru apathy, inaction, ignorance (both deliberate and not), fear, and even egotism.

When I listen to the news in today's world, and I hear accounts of the post-9/11 Anthrax scares, or the recent pneumonia illness that has now affected some 1,500 people -- my heart aches. Not to discount the reality of these illnesses, but all I can remember is how angered and saddened I felt as I read "And the Band Played On" and realized that hundreds of thousands of people were infected before the word AIDS was ever mentioned in the media. I was a sophmore in college when I first remember hearing about AIDS. That was in 1987. How many people had died from the disease before I even knew what it was????

I feel everyone should read this book. It doesn't just apply to people in high-risk populations. I happen to be a young heterosexual female, and this book made such an impression on me, that last summer, I found myself joining a 350-mile bike marathon to raise money and awareness for people living with HIV and AIDS. When people asked me why I was doing the ride, I told them about "And the Band Played On."

Randy Shilts' book is haunting and most of all, REAL. The only bad thing is that the book ends -- AIDS doesn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A horribly cruel and insidious virus"
Randy Shilts masterpiece, "And The Band Played On", reads like a detective story; from the discovery of an unusual new organism that was killing a few people slowly and inexorably in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and multiplied exponentially underground until it exploded into the number one health catastrophe on the planet. The fact that AIDS at first took its heaviest toll among gay men, and then among intravenous drug users, guaranteed that its early victims would become outcasts. The AIDS panic seems unbelievable in retrospect but was all too real in the 80s; people were forced off their jobs, children were barred from schools, and anyone who belonged to the "4-H club" (homosexuals, hard-drug users, hemophiliacs, and -- incredibly -- Haitians)were treated like pariahs. The secrecy and denial in dealing with the crisis helped it to spread unabated. Shilts pulls no punches in writing this book. He is equally angry at the Reagan administration which preached pious platitudes while withholding desperately needed funds for medical research; the radical gay community which refused to acknowledge its own responsibility for the sexually promiscuous behavior that helped spread the disease like wildfire, and those in the medical community who played grandstanding politics and plain old-fashioned spite while patients were dying all around them. And then of course there was the media, which treated this puzzling, terrifying new disease, which for two years after its discovery didn't even have a name, as something the "general public" didn't have to be concerned about -- until heterosexual men and women began to be infected. But there were also the heroes -- the physicians who devoted their days and nights to treating their patients, gay men like Larry Kramer who refused to let the gay community sweep the problem under the rug, Rock Hudson, whose up-front candor and admission of his illness shocked the American public and helped to bring AIDS out of the closet once and for all, and C. Everett Koop, Reagan's Surgeon General, who refused to play politics and demonstrated the leadership his boss lacked in his common-sense and compassionate approach to meeting the crisis, to the horror of his right-wing constituency. Shilts wrote his story with such compelling urgency that it wraps the reader up like a whodunit you don't want to put down. One shares his disgust at the doctors who cared more about their own self-promotion than about their patients; the right-wing politicians who treated the victims of a devastating and deadly disease as if they were sinners who had earned the wrath of God; the gay men who didn't care how many people they infected as long as they could enjoy the promiscuous atmosphere of the bath houses, and most incredibly, the for-profit blood banks, which refused to admit their product was carrying a deadly virus and fought against blood testing for three years while the number of people who died from transfusions of infected blood grew by the thousands. And in a heartbreaking coda to this story, Shilts deliberately put off having his own blood tested while he was writing this book because he didn't want his judgement biased if he turned out to be HIV positive. It was only after he finished the book that he learned that he was infected with the virus that had killed so many and in a few years would also kill him. Shilts' death from AIDS was a tragedy, but he left us this magnificent book as his legacy. After reading his book, we are the richer and the wiser for his information, his insight and his understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars if you've made it this far...buy it!
i generally refrain from rating books, but without doubt, this book is worth much more than what they're charging. I have no complaints. this was the perfect mix of politics, medicine, and sociology. ive read a few books concerned with this subject matter that were too detached. they focused on the big picture, and certainly had some staggering stats to make you think, but shilts made it personal, and never strayed. I wish their were more books like this one. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If you are not made of wood, tears will stain most every page of your copy of this book.Elaine DePrince is a housewife and mother of five, two of whom died of AIDS when they were young boys. They were hemophiliacs who were exposed to HIV via their use of contaminated blood-clotting products. This is the story of their brief lives and of their mother's fight against a health care cum legal system that allows pharmaceutical companies to rush their blood products to market without fear of product liability lawsuits, a system that made their unnecessary deaths possible. What makes the story all the more affecting is that the two boys were very bright and well aware of the whole awfulness of their tragedy. Just try reading the eleven-year-old Cubby DePrince's "64 Reasons Why You Do Not Want to Get AIDS" (Reason #64: "You wonder if people will still remember you after you are dead.") while holding to the belief that the FDA and the state legislatures and the blood banks and the drug companies are doing a good job. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Your worst fears confirmed
The only book on the subject availible, and long overdue. Elaine DePrince writes from the heart, with a sharp eye for contradictions. Though it is a personal story of pain and loss, anyone who reads it can not come away without a sense of outrage. It is a story that should have been writen ten years ago about a forgotten group forced into the battle against HIV?AIDS unarmed and unprepared, but continues to fight back to the last man and woman if necessary. Every health care worker, doctor, and politician should read this, and if it doesn't scare them silly, they are not paying attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars What the media hasn't told you about transfusion-AIDS.
This book serves well as both the intimate story of a family whose lives have been profoundly altered by AIDS, and an expose of the events that allowed this deadly disease to invade them.

While the average American probably believes, as I did until recently, that the infection of thousands of hemophiliacs with the AIDS virus was an unavoidable tragedy, DePrince uncovers the awful truth that for many, if not most, hemophiliacs, infection with AIDS and the deadly hepatitis C virus was not only avoidable, but that the government and hemophilia profiteers (like Bayer "The Aspirin People") chose not to act to produce a safer product in favor of bigger profits.

DePrince also reminds us that the tragedy experienced by the hemophilia community isn't an isolated incident. Many millions of Americans are exposed to blood products each year, sometimes unknowingly, which means anyone at anytime could find themselves facing infection with HIV, HCV, or perhaps some unknown virus making its way into the blood supply today. Blood safety is an important issue to everyone - not just those who rely on blood products regularly. DePrince also advocates for the passage of the Ricky Ray Hemophilia Relief Fund Act which provides compassionate payments to victims of this disaster along with important improvements to blood safety.

Read this book as if your life depended on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking...even after all these years.
I must have read this book 4-5 years ago. And it left such an impression that after all these years...I realise that I have to reread the book and write this review. For everyone who have read ths review, my advice is to read the book, I will not give away the suspense. But the interactions of the characters, the emotions protrayed and the reality of it all will definitely strike a chord in everybody's hearts. For once, I am so disappointed that the book is out of print, because, it should be shared by all readers young and old. It not only opens your mind, it makes you see things in a perspective you never knew existed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply beyond words

5-0 out of 5 stars A global look at how individuals impact each other.
My father gave me a copy oth this book about six year ago. I was captivated by the way individuals around the world had a positive impact on each other. i am thinking of the young priest who was gravely injured, but found that he could connect to others through praying for them. The work of Mother Theresas sisters, the scientists studying AIDS, it was truly a human mosaic. The intertwining of people who may never have met! Truly, "No man is an island." ... Read more
