Product Description

The title says it all: Your Child Does Not Have Bipolar Disorder: How Bad Science and Good Public Relations Created the Diagnosis. In this provocative book, child psychiatrist Stuart Kaplan offers a challenge to parents, mental health professionals, the drug industry, the research community, and the general public. He asserts that the soaring incidence of bipolar disorder diagnoses among children and adolescents is based on incorrect, newly created definitions of the disorder, and he marshals the evidence to back up his claim.

Chronicling the enormous growth of the bipolar diagnosis in children since 1995, Dr. Kaplan vigorously disputes the clinical and scientific bases (the "bad science") behind the diagnoses and explains the catastrophic clinical consequences. At the same time, he exposes the social and cultural dynamics that underlie this clinical fad. The second section of the book discusses medications used to treat bipolar disorder and the biases that currently undermined their assessment. The book concludes with specific advice for parents about managing symptoms commonly mistaken as bipolar disorder.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Helpful
A mom who lost her Bipolar son to suicide wrote this book based on her personal experience. It definately does not do what the subtitle says it does--give parents and professionals everything they need to know!I found that a new book, "If Your Child is Bipolar" gives great information on what parents need to do to take care of their Bipolar child and does a much, much better job."The Bipolar Child" should also be on the bookshelf of every parent with a child who is or might be Bipolar.

3-0 out of 5 stars too personal
This book has some good info, but is a very personal perspective of one person's experience--and her child committed suicide!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but very personal
While this book addresses many important topics related to childhood-onset Bipolar Disorder, it is also very closely tied to the author's personal experience of losing a child to the disorder. It provides one parent's perspective on medical treatment and suicide. It's can be a helpful resource, but could also be somewhat depressing for parents looking for solutions to their daily challenges.--Sheryl Gurrentz, co-author of "If Your Child is Bipolar--a parent to parent guide to living with and loving a Bipolar child"

4-0 out of 5 stars an impressive source of info about childhood bipolar
This book is a thorough guide to childhood bipolar disorder. It rivals "The Bipolar Child" in that it is an attempt to provide a comprehensive picture of the disorder to parents and doctors.I don't think it's quite as well written or well organized as "The Bipolar Child", but I still recommend that it be read since I think a number of sources of information should be used when approaching a complex subject like bipolar disorder.Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

1-0 out of 5 stars Where is the editor?
This book is very short on organization and is written in a manner that is a bit hard to follow. Unimportant details are thrown in frequently; important parts of the story are worked in too late. I was having trouble understanding why ideas were misplaced in this book and I was nagged by thoughts like: "Why did the editor of this book not clean up the story sequence?".

The author does not cite that she possesses any particular training, and yet, she throws around all kinds of "facts" and figures about depression and other illnesses and does not bother to give the first clue about where she is getting specific bits of information (although there are references in the back). I know that some of the information is on the money, because I have read it elsewhere. But other items are surprising to me. I keep thinking "Where is the EDITOR of this book! "

I keep thinking "I wonder how many of these figures I should believe, if any?" When she sticks to her own experiences, the book is quite valuable, but when the author turns the thing into more of a textbook about half way through, I get frustrated. I am plagued by how and why the editor would allow so much academic-type information from someone with no apparent academic credentials in this area.

And then it strikes me, as you have probably already figured out. This is a self-published book. There IS no editor. No publisher at all is listed on the cover, but when you look inside, you see that it is printed by Benline Press--the first syllable being the name of the son.

I feel betrayed by the bookseller. I am not sure I would have ordered this book had I known that its publication was not supervised by a disinterested party. There is very little on the market about bipolar disorder in children, and I would like to see other attempts made. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helps with understanding what your child is going through
If you are looking for a book that helps with understanding what exactly a bipolar child is going through and what/how they are thinking, then this is the book for you. It was wonderful to read this book both alone and with our child. We often read passages to our child to see if he was feeling similar things, or going through similar experiences. Through the words of other children, it helped us to understand our child better, get to know him more and become more familiar and versed in what he was going thorugh. It gave us a significantly greater understanding of his experience. It also helped substanially to know that he is not alone, and we are not alone, with various thoughts and feelings we all have and go through with this disorder- that we are not alone in our experiences. We have given this book to our child's classroom teacher each year, and to any speacial ed teachers or counselors that he may be working with. Each time they comment on how unique and useful the book's perspective is- that it really helps them to understand this illness and to be able to look at it and understand it from the child's eyes, perspective, and to hear about it in their words... excellent resource and tool for anyone working with a bipolar child, an absolute must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and helpful
Intense minds was helpful and informative. For those who know someone with Bipolar disorder, it's insights help you see into a young bipolar mind.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good basic information
This book takes the unique perspective of kids who are dealing with mental illness. It is comforting to read the stories of these children.

However, as a parent newly coping with Bipolar disorder in my home, it was frustrating to have just the cause and affect of the disorder discussed. There is nothing out there for parents. I was hoping for guidance on how to cope myself, how to handle discipline, how to help my other children through the rages and how to keep my relationships with my bipolar child intact. This book provided none of these things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intense Minds - Extraordinary
This book examines the minds of young people with Bipolar Disorder. The author's presentation is so much more than a description of symptoms often used to make a diagnosis. Anglada delves into the minds, thoughts, and feelings of these kids through interviews where the children provide honest, unfiltered accounts of the way they experience the world.

The individual descriptions of such intense childhood experiences, each originating from a child's mind, left me with a deeper and more profound understanding of what these children go through in their day to day lives.

This is book is a gift to anyone seeking to understand Bipolar Disorder from the perspective of the sufferer. Five Stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for School Psychologists to recommend
Through their own words about growing up with Bipolar Disorder, children, teens, and adults offer an opportunity for others to empathize and act to support children with whom they may work in the classroom, at home, and in a medical or therapeutic setting. This is a quick read which includes descriptions of the illness and suggestions for helping young people successfully cope with their disorder. ... The Definitive Resource on How to Identify, Treat, and Live with a Bipolar Child

More than three million American children suffer from some form of bipolar disorder, a life-impairing illness that can cause wild mood swings and even episodes of rage. But as a parent, can you tell the difference between a tempermental, moody child and one facing serious mental illness? Where do you turn if your child’s tantrums and meltdowns are wreaking havoc? For families as well as professionals, here is the only book on early- onset bipolar disorder written by pediatric specialists who combine clinical care and research.

Health experts once thought bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, did not exist in children and teens. However, leading experts like Janet Wozniak and Mary Ann McDonnell have shown that the illness may appear even before age six, with many cases either undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Now, in the most complete and authoritative guide yet, Janet Wozniak, M.D., and psychiatric nurse Mary Ann McDonnell offer their unmatched expertise along with the latest information on this difficult condition.

Drawing from their professional experience and sharing stories of families in their practices, the authors guide you in how to:
•Navigate the “diagnosis tangle” to ensure accurate identification of the disorder
•Communicate effectively with doctors, teachers, and counselors
•Find allies and choose a treatment team
•Help your family cope

In a rapidly changing field, The Bipolar Disorder clearly explains what researchers know, what they suspect, and where studies now point. From medication to coping strategies, this accessible book offers inspiration, encouragement, and invaluable wisdom for all involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Someone who understands my child
I found this book to be absolutely amazing.I kept finding myself with my mouth hanging open in shock at the fact that what was being written about in the book was EXACTLY what it is like to live in my house.Truly an amazing read.It is an absolute must read for families that deal with this issue. There is a huge feeling of "at least I am no longer alone in this".

I found the scientific information to be interesting and very useful.I have used this to help explain bipolar to my youngest son (10 years old). His older brother is the one with the disease, but it is the family who suffers from it.

After reading it I bought multiple copies to send to my mother and sisters so that they can understand what life is like for my oldest son.

This is a must read for anyone who has a child with this illness, and for teachers, relatives and friends who will be spending a lot of time with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive Parenting for Bipolar Kids
I have been extremely pleased with this book - thurs/friday/saturday - I have already read 1/2 way through it - it has great information - a lot of what is in here I have heard from other parents who have the same issues and from her therapist - and a lot of things I hadn't known about the disease - I can't wait to finisht the book - I hope other parents out there that are struggling with (Adolescent Bipolar) especially in the early stage (which is where I am) read this book - It is written on a level that any one can understand - it is on the common persons level - and it is easy reading - If you have a child who has recently been diagnosed with Bipolar (as I have, since the end of March 2010) I highly recommend this book - the Appendix is full of great contact information and where to seek more information - my advise is to get all the information you can and learn from it - This is heartbreaking when it is your own child - I can not recommend this book enough to those of you struggling out there looking, reaching for answers - It hasn't answered all of my questions (not sure anyone can) but it is a great comfort - and the copyright date is 2009 - so the information is fairly current - and the authors are very knowledgeable and compassionate to the reader - please if you are looking for help with Bipolar for your child (mine is 13) purchase this book - you'll be glad you did - I am!! And thank you to the authors of this book - It is greatly appreciated by me and my daughter - We have a long road ahead of us - all we as parents can do is educate ourselves and the ones around us as much as possible - and hope that one day they will find a cure so other children do not have to suffer - DH

How does an intelligent, beautiful young woman come to this end?

Kassi Visage-Lowe was born Kassi Lee Schlangen in Spokane, Washington, January 9, 1959. She was happy and excited about life, a little girl with promise for the future. Kassi was talented; she loved to sing and draw and express herself. As she grew up, she found that school was easy for her. Social contacts were not.

Kassi would speak up when challenged and fight you when wronged. She became combative and defensive—she made her opinion known. For that she was beaten time and time again. Kassi fought back, alienating herself from family...at least in her mind.

Soon Kassi would trust no adult. She separated herself from friends and family and spent more time alone. She prayed to Jesus but there was no one else in her life.

Love Me is the story of a girl with high hopes never realized. Kassi’s confused adulthood was the end result of childhood sexual, physical and mental abuse — leading to bipolar disorder and a life of drug use, prostitution and self-destruction. Her story is also a lesson about the indifference of our society.

How many other Kassis will we turn our backs on?

Product Description
Most individuals that suffer from bipolar have one goal. That goal is to live a life that is as normal as can be. To get through today without having any emotional problems, to make it through the big meeting at work without having people wonder what is wrong with you and to simply be able to enjoy your daughter’s graduation are all additional goals that you may have.

Before you can fully learn to cope with bipolar, you need to fully understand your condition. You need to know what things happen, as best that you can, so that you can then trigger your coping mechanisms to work for you.

There is no 100 percent sure way of stopping these things from happening to you. But, there are countless things you can learn to do to help you to improve your outlook.

To get to that point, we will start by giving you all of the information you need about your condition so that you can better understand what is happening to you. If you are a family member who just wants to help someone that has bipolar, then by all means, you too can learn all that you need to in order to deliver the help that you can give to them.

Bipolar is a condition in which there are extremes in moods and life experiences. There is no doubt that bipolar is a health condition that is serious and disabling to those that have it. It is a mental illness and it does require necessary treatment.

You may have heard bipolar called Manic Depression or that a person suffering from it has a manic depressive condition. But, what scientists have come to learn is that manic style behavior is only one extreme of this condition. The other part of it is that of depression. Both of these conditions are vitally serious to your well being and even to your life span and must be treated.

While doctors do not have a cause for bipolar, they are working on finding one. Along with that, you can be sure that there are many scientists looking for a way to cure the condition. Yet, until that happens, we need to examine what we do know about bipolar and what it does to the person that you are.

For most people bipolar starts when they are just in their teens. Some believe that it is triggered by puberty. Others will not develop this condition until they are in their early adult years. Bipolar can last your life time, too.

For most individuals, bipolar is a condition that doesn’t happen all of the time. You don’t go in and out of moods ore other experiences within seconds and you don’t do this all of the time either. For example, some people will have bouts that last for several weeks. Others will have them for a few months at a time. Although it is possible to have bipolar in which your symptoms flare all of the time, this is really the rare case.

If you don’t get help for bipolar, your condition is likely to continue to worsen. There is no doubt that depression itself is a killer. Therefore, not getting help is simply not an option. But, the good news is that there are medications, treatments and therapies that can help to reduce the symptoms and help you to cope with your condition.

"Every seventeen minutes in America someone commits suicide." ~ Pg. 34

Joann Jovinelly has written and especially helpful book about bipolar disorder. This book helps you to identify which type of bipolar disorder you have and then it explains the best medications for your condition. Because this book seems to have been written for children it may be overlooked by adults. It is definitely more advanced than for age 9-12 and I wouldn't recommend it for children unless they are very mature and have been diagnosed with the illness. This book emphasizes the need to stay on medication even when you are feeling well enough not to take it.

What I found most enjoyable about this book was the short quotes from people who have bipolar disorder. It was interesting to see how they viewed their illness. Since over 2 million people suffer from bipolar disorder in the United States this book is needed and appreciated.

Of all the books I've read on bipolar disorder this one seemed the most informative and detailed. It helped me understand the different types of mania experienced and the types of depression that are typical. I would recommend this book to anyone who suspects they may be bipolar or to anyone who knows someone who is bipolar. This book could help you get a better diagnosis and there is also information on how to choose a doctor.
