Product Description
An internationally respected psychiatrist offers the most practical, up-to-date resource available on bipolar disorder.

For Dr. Wes Burgess, the diagnosis of bipolar disorder means hope-hope for the estimated ten million people who will develop the disorder during their lifetimes, and hope for the families and friends of people who suffer from it. Drawing upon the real questions asked by patients and families during his nearly twenty years as a bipolar specialist, The Bipolar Handbook comprehensively tackles every area of the disorder, from its causes to medical treatment and psychotherapy, to strategies for creating a healthy lifestyle, to the prevention of, coping with, and treatment of bipolar episodes. From the more than five hundred questions and answers, you'll learn:

- what to expect when pursuing a diagnosis
- how to choose the right doctor or specialist
- how to get the disorder under control
- what treatments and medication protocols are best for you
- how to reduce stress to prevent manic and depressive episodes
- what family members and friends can do to support you, and more

Dr. Burgess also addresses unique lifestyle concerns facing bipolar individuals. Special chapters on practical strategies for career success, building healthy relationships, issues that specifically affect bipolar women, and coping techniques for families and friends further explore the impact of the disorder on daily life.

The Bipolar Handbook's easy-to-access format and full chapter of resources, as well as diagnostic criteria from the American Psychiatric Association and the National Institute for Mental Health, make this a versatile guide-perfect for quick reference and in-depth discovery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life Changing Book
This book transformed my understanding of myself. It is just absolutely incredible, the best bipolar intro ever.

In answer to some of the critiques, it's true the book is very general, but that is its purpose: to provide a broad overview and allow the reader to explore further. It is also true that the info can readily be found elsewhere, but the genius of the book is that it allows you to use the scientific knowledge to sum up your own life. When Burgess says that bipolars have a tendency to associate themselves with powerful people, the insight just strikes you with blunt force, and forces you to reassess all your relationships.

I particularly appreciated his insight into the potential dangers of hypnosis on people who can't control their emotions. Indeed, I hope he goes further in the future and discusses the whole range of therapies and techniques (Gestalt, guided imagery, deep trance meditation, etc.) that can tip vulnerable bipolars into manic and psychotic states. With particular reference to Gestalt, I would not that challenging, confrontational types of New Age and other therapies are often bullying and deadly to people just learning to defend themselves against abuse.

What a great book. I can't recommend it enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bipolar Handbook
Best book yet that I have read on the subject and I wished I had read it years ago.Very simple but exact explanations of everything covering all aspects of the illness and more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative.
Very informative and easy to read. Must have reading for anyone living with someone that has bipolar.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bipolar Handbook: Real-Life Questions with Up-to-Date Answers
This book is very easy to read and to the point. The format with questions and answers makes it so that you can jump to any page and read different parts, which is good for a person with Bipolar that would not necessarily want to sit down and read page by page.It has helped us a lot.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Once in a While Something New Comes Along.
Every once in a while something new comes along.
As a psychotherapist and an individual with bipolar disorder, I have read my share of book on this subject. There are many which are helpful; however, "The Bipolar Handbook," is like no other. What Dr. Burgess, a psychiatrist and longtime practitioner, has created is something highly accessible to the patient and professional alike. "The Bipolar Handbook," is written in a question and answer format.Divided into several sections, each part poses questions highly relevant to the reader. His answers are informative due to his years specializing in bipolar disorder, combined with a pragmatic, common sense sort of advice not often found in a self-help book of this type.
Along with the usual information and topics you will find discussed elsewhere, Dr. Burgess answers questions on issues not normally found, like career success strategies, personal relationship maintainance, and issues relevant to the unique needs of women. All of these topics are addressed in an open, casual manner,as if one were seated in his office, and he was speaking to you personally. The book can stand on its own or be used along with other books on the subject written in a more conventional style. It is easy to read and holds one's attention.
Most of all, Dr. Burgess writes in a way that is upbeat and optimistic about the ability of those with bipolar disorder to get a handle on controlling the symptoms and lead a productive, enriched life. The idea that medication and psychotherapy are the best manner of treatments echoes through his book and has been shown to be true through study after study.
Dr. Burgess is to be commended for his contribution to the literature on the subject of mental illness. If you want to be informed on the topic of bipolar illness by a doctor who knows his stuff, "The Bipolar Handbook," is the book to get. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All that and a bag of chips
The book does exactly what it claims, it provides new hope in the form of practical and useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars best bipolar book on sheveles
This is by far one of the most informative books on Bipolar Disorder. It's straight and to the point with tib bids of information for the family too.I highly recommend it to those who are seeking as much information as you can get and use it as a tool to educate your love ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different perspective
This book takes a different perspective on bipolar disorder. The book, while it has clinical elements, is not so cut and dried as many other books are on bipolar disorder. There is more discussion of the human impact of bipolar disorder, both on the patient and on their families and friends.I wish there were more books that really got into how this disease affects the people around the patient; most of them tend to concentrate on the patient, which is important, but bipolar disorder has an enormous impact on the families, friends and communities in which the patient lives.I really wish that the medical community would take that more into account and provide treatment plans that can involve the family and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pearl
I am bipolar & highly recommend this book. It's one of the few that actually offer some hope. While reading the reviews, I've noticed most of the 4-5 star reviews are by people such as myself, who are also bipolar. Others who give it low ratings seem to use anonymous names & refer to the bipolar co-author as "loopy" and "illogical." These terms strike me as common, but ignorant, stereotypes. The pharmaceutical companies are obviously going to be unhappy with this book.
This is one of the few books I won't give away. However, I will buy it for friends & give it as a gift.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overly Explanatory with Examples by an Annoying Patient Recounted Throughout
This book includes basic information on mood disorders, including major depression, mania, and hypomania, all components of what used to be called manic-depression and is now known as bipolar disorder.

I found other books more helpful as far as scientific knowledge and explication.I found Kay Redfield Jamison's books insightful, inspiring, as well as incredibly knowledgeable.I found this book annoying, and it relied too heavily on the double whammy of an explanation or point made by one of the medical authors with a lay person follow-up by Nancy, a patient with bipolar disorder whose experiences and anecdotes are leaned on heavily throughout the book. In trying to warm up what they perhaps feared might be an overly objective, medical reference book, which it is far, far from being anyway, the authors used Nancy as a device to humanize the condition.

I got very tired of Nancy and her loopy examples. When not preening over the authors' attention as the pet subject of the book, she was just illogical and somewhat strident or annoying. She had a very definite "voice," which to me was loud and probably possessing a strong New York accent.I feel for Nancy and her experiences with this disorder, but her examples had no resonance for me and detracted from any actual information.

Go for Jamison definitely and browse through some other newer sources.Skip this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Author's Review
Yes, I am the author and I wanted to give you a little bit more about this book. I am my own worst critic, so I thought I would rate the book once I read it. Yes, I wrote it, but didn't get a chance to read it in it's entirety. The Alpha editors did a good job. I am trained and educated in medication, but I am not a medical doctor. The info about the medications comes from feedback from the 25,000 mental health professionals I have trained, and mostly from the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH). I have researched the natural remedies, but haven't found any that will do the job 100%. See Dr. O'Connell's website in the book for more info. The most natural medication that works seems to be lithium. Rita Warner did a great job in bringing the tech data down to a simple understanding. My other associates in the book were excellent and the editors blended their work in nicely. For more info and a little humor, see [...]. Wishing you the best. Dr. Jay ... Read more

Learn how religion can help in treating those suffering from bipolar disorder

The Treatment of Bipolar Disorder in Pastoral Counseling introduces a new treatment model based on Quaker ideas and practices that can be used in conjunction with medical and psychological practice for treating manic-depressive illness. This unique book examines the interplay between religion and psychoanalysis, using the latest research on the importance of silence, prayer, and meditation in psychotherapy, the role of community in healing, and the problem of God and suffering. The book includes clinical examples from the author’s counseling practice, case studies of bipolar clients, and an extensive bibliography of materials on this crippling disorder that affects more than two million American adults.

With its multidisciplinary approach, pastoral counseling may be the most effective psychotherapy for use with medical and pharmacological treatments. Pastoral counselors can gain valuable insights from psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, learning, and family systems theories for a more complete understanding of their clients. The Treatment of Bipolar Disorder in Pastoral Counseling examines current understandings of the disorder, including the effects, advantages, and disadvantages of medications, genetic factors, and the search for a "mood gene," and looks at current treatment approaches, including object relations, psychoeducational, and narrative psychology.

The Treatment of Bipolar Disorder in Pastoral Counseling examines:

the writings of Quaker reformers, their methods of treatment, and the philosophies behind them

key theological ideas of Quakerism that are helpful to pastoral counselors

the ethical implications of pastoral counseling

self-emptying as a way toward health

the client’s right to privacy and individuality

the nature of suffering

the public perception of mental illness

theological reflections of mental illness

and much more

The Treatment of Bipolar Disorder in Pastoral Counseling also includes case studies of bipolar clients and an extensive bibliography of books, journal articles, and Internet resources. 2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Organized
This book rambled, stumbled over itself, and was filled with grammatical errors. It was hard to determine where the authors were trying to go, and it seemed that once they got there, they offered little, if any, information that was actually useful. I learned perhaps two new things from this book, and they really aren't things that will help me to help my Aspergian son.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource...a "must have"
If you have a child with ADHD, an Autism spectrum disorder/Pervasive Development Disorder, or sensory integrative issues then this book will be an excellent read!! I love that it has entire chapters/sections devoted to the interaction between a specific disorder/diagnosis/cluster, and sensory response/reactions...the book is well-written, is readily understandable to lay-persons, yet it is as useful to therapists as many other books on the market...my son's therapist copied almost the entire book when she borrowed it from me!!!
In a nutshell, this book gives you certain behaviors that may manifest, gives ideas on how to resolve...yet is never preachy...love this book

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
This book has important wisdom for parents and teachers. The authors write very compassionately and very professionally about the process of helping kids with a number of disorders that can interfere with learning. They are very helpful, and always respectful of the children whose learning patterns they are describing. This is a great book!! LO in New York

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice on dealing with your child's SI dysfunction
Authors Emmons and Anderson are both special education teachers, as well as moms of children with sensory integration difficulties, and it shows. A Clinically-Oriented, Prescriptive Guide to Diagnosing and Treating Mood Disorders

Depression is very common in chronic medical illness, hindering recovery, increasing functional impairment, contributing to the costs of treating disease, and worsening prognosis. In addition, symptoms of depression are often indistinguishable from symptoms of co-occurring illnesses. It is imperative that clinicians acquire a more precise understanding of how depression and other chronic medical conditions impact each other, and how the treatments for each may influence the other.

This book describes the epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of comorbid depression and bipolar disorder with specific illnesses. It informs physicians about what patients need for optimum outcomes, and gives practical ideas on communicating with patients and instilling hope.

This wealth of practical information on treating mood disorders and comorbid physical illness over the long term and avoiding relapses can be immediately utilized to enrich patient care.

This is the first step-by-step mood disorder guidebook designed specifically for physician use:

  • Helps physicians detect, diagnose, and treat depression and bipolar disorders in a concise, results-oriented way. Also helps physicians understand the issues and concerns of their patients for more effective and patient-centered care.

  • Provides a clinically rigorous method for quickly and accurately linking symptoms to each disorder.

  • Offers clear, up-to-date information on psychotropic drugs--with definitive instructions on the use of these antidepressants and mood stabilizers in the treatment of disorders, including dosage guidelines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book for children and parents
This book was a key player in dealing with my son's initial diagnosis. When he read the book it made him realize he is not alone. It also helped his brother's (4 of them) realize that my son has a mental illness that prevents him from being able to regulate his emotions. I recommend this book for any family with a child who is or has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Any age is appropriate because it is written in such a way that it "explains" Bipolar.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book!

I bought this book last year when my 8 year old was diagnosed with Bipolar. I was hoping it would help me explain to him what in the world was causing him the termoil his body was given him on the inside.
To my suprise it not only helped him understand, it helped me as well. He keeps it by his bed side (still to this day) and reads it either to himself or to me, when he is having and off day.

I am very thankfull I got this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful 6 Stars
Bipolar disorder in children can manifest itself in many ways. This book helps children to understand what is happening in a non-clinical way.Having children with this illness, I have found this to be a valuable resource to let them know that they are not alone in what they are feeling.I have found that it helps open a line of communication between my wife and I and our girls. They are no longer embarrassed by the difficulties they face, because they understand that they are not the only ones to have this health condition. Also, it helps them to express their experiences to me in their own words.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unsatisfied
I am both a mental health care professional, and a mother of a child with Bipolar II. Although Bipolar I, Bipolar II, and Cyclothalmia, differ greatly; there are many similarities. Unfortunately, none of them were connected in this book. When my child read it, the comment was, "I could never relate to this book. It's not me!". Nothing of the racing thoughts; the obsessiveness; the disruptive sleep patterns, etc. I shared the book with many of the families I work with, almost all had similar responses.I am happy to see the topic come up and be published for children. I just wish it could have been something that more of them and their parents could actually relate to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for personal library
Stahl has produced another terrific book that explains Bipolar and Depression in terms that non-clinicians can understand.

I bought this book based on my desire for relevant information on BP. I have found the images of neuronal/brain activity that accompany most topics in the book to be extremely helpful and germaine to a full comprehension. The major pharmaceuticals used to treat the disorders are explained in detail, as well as their mechanism of action.

I would recommend this book to people affected with BP and Depression that have a faily high reading level ability.

I wanted to return the book because it was not what I expected. I sent emails, but no one ever responded to say that it could be returned or not returned.

Before purchasing the book, I wished I had known that the customer service would be poor or even that the purchase would be considered a "FINAL SALE".

Product Description
Who's Crazy Here? is a concise guide for people seeking options to psychiatric drugs. Author Gracelyn Guyol ended her bipolar disorder in 2002 by addressing its underlying causes instead of treating the symptoms forever with drugs. When readers of her first book confessed difficulty "wading through" the length and science in most health books, Gracelyn created this 113 page guide to recovery fromADD/ADHD, Addiction, Eating Disorders, Anxiety, PTSD, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, and Autism.Part I covers remedies for the most frequent causes of mental dysfunction: inadequate brain fuel, nutrient imbalances, disruptive substances, four "genetic quirks," flawed digestion, food allergies/sensitivities, environmental toxins, and emotional trauma. Chapters in Part II focus on a specific diagnosis and its unique causes. Innovative practitioners are introduced who have developed effective, drug-free treatments. Each chapter concludes with bulleted Steps to Recovery to discuss with your holistic practitioner.Since it can be difficult to locate doctors trained to treat mental illness without drugs, Chapter 1 provides key words, web sites, and tips for finding one using the Internet. For readers who want more scientific data and details, DVDs, books, and web sites are recommended throughout.Learn about practitioners using methods developed by the late Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD, who enabled 75% of his schizophrenic patients to live "normal" lives. Discover the clinic that ended Gracelyn's bipolar mania in just four months, which has been helping mental patients for two decades. Most addiction programs achieve long-term abstinence for only 3-10%. The approach Gracelyn recommends that addresses the physical causes of addiction enjoys 60-74% success.Even children with autism, the most complex disorder, frequently recover.Explore how holistic treatments can help you or a loved one restore mental health. ... Who's Crazy Here?
Steps to Recovery Without Drugs
by Gracelyn Guyol,
Ajoite Publishing, Stonington, Connecticut, 2010.
124 pages, ISBN 9780578061764

Recovery from mental illness without drugs? In today's high-stress world, many people experience episodes of anxiety, depression or psychosis. Everybody knows that modern psychiatrists prescribe pills while psychoanalysts prefer talk therapy. Until people develop a mental illness, they don't learn about the complications, the problems and the difficulties that many vulnerable patients experience during episodes, just when they need quality care. The author of this book asks an important question - Who's Crazy Here?

Author Gracelyn Guyol, herself a recovered patient, healed her bipolar disorder in 2002. She remains mentally balanced by taking a daily regimen of vitamins, minerals and other nutritional supplements, avoiding toxins that cause her brain to malfunction and not eating gluten. Her book shares several steps which helped her recover from a serious mental illness.

Part 1 gently outlines Sherlock's Process, a practical approach for identifying mood disruptors, medical conditions and trigger factors. Without analyzing brain chemistry or psychiatry, Guyol politely but firmly encourages readers to consider the causes of their symptoms and find competent health professionals who treat patients safely and effectively.

Part 2 has step-by-step programs for recovering from ADD, addiction, eating disorders, anxiety, autism, depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Each chapter suggests steps for recovery, offers helpful advice and lists reference books and web sites with patient-friendly information.

Who's Crazy Here? explains that mental patients are not crazy to hope for recovery. Even if their psychiatrists only prescribe drugs, Gracelyn Guyol encourages patients to use Sherlock's Process to find health professionals who know how to diagnose and treat the root causes of mental illness, without relying on zombifying doses of prescription medications. The author does not overload readers with biochemistry, research reports or medical terms. Gracelyn knows that patients and families have to start with the basics. Her book presents the facts, concisely, clearly and persuasively. The tone is encouraging, supportive and respectful.

The author introduces two little-known psychiatrists, Dr. A. Hoffer and Dr. H. Osmond, who met in the 1950s in Saskatchewan, Canada. With hundreds of psychotic patients to care for and few effective treatments, they teamed up with medical scientists and clinical professionals to research the metabolic causes of schizophrenia and develop restorative treatments. They used healing doses of vitamins, minerals and other nutritional supplements to complement other treatments. Many of their patients recovered on an orthomolecular program.

Gracelyn Guyol wrote this informative book to help patients, families and caregivers find quality care and recover from a mental illness. Even busy psychiatrists can use this book to understand how a restorative program can complement other treatments. Guyol's book inspires patients to hope, learn and recover, even patients with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia.
