5-0 out of 5 stars Most helpful, proactice book on BPD!
By far the most helpful, pro-active book and infomation on BPD I've yet to come across. At first I was skeptical about this book, I think it would just be a lot of hippie jargon from reading the website, but as I read on I was pleasently surprised!Paxton's book, unlike any of the other BPD books out there, actually gives concrete, simple advice on how to deal with the painful, daily struggles of Borderline Personality Disorder. She doesn't merely inform the readers about the disorder, but instead also gives solid, helpful, and very intuitive advice on how to get over BPD.Anouther great and very powerful aspect of this book is the hope Paxton gives to those living with BPD actions.Paxton suggest the the same energy used to destroy with BPD, can be channeled in a different diretion that leads to not only recovery, but creative, active happiness.I really think if you are looking for a book on BPD, this is the only one to buy at this point in time-as not much is really known on how to effectively treat this disorder. All of the other books on the topic just seem to touch the surface of what Laura Paxton acually understands and has changed.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thumbs up and a good helper book for BPD clients
For those just starting to accept the BPD self and are willing to take responsibility for moving towards wellness, this book is definitely one to keep close by.I have personally found it a self-soothing tool, even before I started attending a DBT - based therapy group. The simply presented, easy to understand exercises, along with the mid-level BPD information and positive affirmations from the author make this book a nice stand-alone for those frustrating nights when you need a gentle reminder, or as an adjunct to DBT.Definitely worth the modest investment. There is also a workbook available separately that can be helpful as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Book?
While it is possible to find information that I have not found in other publications, and while it is very helpful since it apparently was written by someone who has been through all this, calling it a "book" is just a little misleading. It has been published with a plastic spiral, no harder covers or nylon for the endsheets, there are pages to fill in that have been reprinted as many as 30 times (the journal page for example) with statements such as e "Bare your soul" with four lines to do it in...

3-0 out of 5 stars Borderline and Beyond - Somewhat Helpful, But...
I ordered this workbook after having read the glowing reviews for it here at Amazon. If you've been looking for books on BPD, you realize how few there are, and even fewer that offer concrete suggestions and exercises. After reading through the workbook, however, I was very disappointed in the amount of actual information in it. Without counting the exact number of pages, I would estimate that a good 2/3 of the book is filled with copy after copy of worksheets to fill out. In my opinion this book would have been far more helpful if it had been filled with information and the reader was given the opportunity to make their own copies of worksheets. Also, it is not a "book" but rather a stack of paper copies bound with a plastic ring. While I believe that every piece of information available about BPD is useful, I was disappointed in the amount of information relative to the cost of this workbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings grounding in an unstable life!
Having suffered with this disorder for so many years I am always on the look out for new information and ideas. Borderline and Beyond, is filled with refreshingly simple ideas to help the Borderline ground him/herself during episodes. The book is set up in a way that readers can implement the ideas both during a crisis as well as on an everyday basis in our journey to healing. Paxton has writen words that touch at the very core of our lives, but doesnt just leave the reader saying "yeah thats how I feel", she gives follow-up work so we can learn to cope with those feelings and move towards healing. Paxton is quick to point out that the book is not to stand on its own but rather goes hand in hand with psycotherapy, a reminder for both the borderline and the therapist. This is a wonderful book. ... Read more

Product Description
Description

In the UK today approximately 1.6 million people awoke to the same problem (that's if they'd managed to sleep) - how to survive another day alongside the torrid and turbulent emotions associated with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Although you'd struggle to find a room big enough to house them all at once, it's not a 'popular' mental health problem and has received little publicity. The fact that you've heard of it at all probably means you have it or somebody close at hand does. In the immense isolating pain and confusion that BPD can bring with it, this book is here to remind you that you are not alone - there are at least 1,599,999 others who feel their own personal version of your suffering. This unique anthology brings you some of their voices.

The included poetry and prose features not only pieces by people with BPD, but also the viewpoint of carers and treatment providers. This book won't teach you the facts and figures about BPD or the latest theories as to what causes or treats it, but it will provide the aspect of BPD that is almost always missed - how it feels.

About the Authors

The authors who have contributed to this work have one thing in common - they all have a lived experience of BPD. Whether they are struggling with the day to day challenges of how to manage the rollercoaster of emotions and behaviours for themselves, or looking on as a loving carer or concerned professional, BPD permeates their daily existence. Yet despite this, there are moments for reflection, insight, and beauty - where they can find the time, the space and the words to convey their experience to others who will recognise it all too well and to those who may be struggling to understand what is happening in the internal worlds of those they care about. The authors are of all ages, from all walks of life, and all professions. BPD has no regard for boundaries of age, gender or social status. Here are the words of your lovers, your sons, daughters...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for clients!
I bought this for a client with Borderline Personality Disorder. It is a great little handbook to give out to clients so they can read, very quickly, about BPD and how it affects their lives. Of course the author being someone who has recovered from the negative affects of BPD is also a great way to get your clients motivated!Great buy!

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth the money
This "book" is more like a pamphlet. It looks like it was assembled in someones home. The information is ok, but I would recommend spending the money for a real book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Big name for little book
I was disappointed by this book, or should I call it pamphlet. Yes, it does have some very good self-help suggestions and descriptions of the DSM-IV criteria. There is not much else to it. My copy is not even stapled together straight!
One good thing is though, I can carry it in my purse to help me sxplain what Borderline Personality Disorder is if I am discussing it with people who don't have a clue as to what this disorder entails.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight to the point
At first I thought "how could there be any helpful information in a booklet this small?"
Don't let the size fool you! Tami's been there and fills the pages with concrete, thought-filled, and beneficial insights and tools for anybody with traits of BPD. It puts the power tools of recovery in the hands of the one who wants to be better (but doesn't take the place of therapy or medicinal intervention, by any means). She offers "nuts and bolts" activities and new ways of thinking that empower the BP. Something I can pick up several times for a check up. Great supportive tool written by someone who has been there. ... Read more

Product Description
The most common personality disorder here and abroad, borderline personality disorder is often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed. Left untreated, it causes marked distress and impairment in social, occupational, and role functioning, with high rates of self-destructive behavior (attempted and completed suicide). Its pervasive pattern of impulsivity and instability of interpersonal relationships, affects, and self-image begins in early adulthood and presents in a variety of contexts.

Developed primarily by psychiatrists in active clinical practice, the revised edition of this popular work offers an updated synthesis of current scientific knowledge and rational clinical practice for patients with borderline personality disorder—with the important caveat that clinicians should consider, but not limit themselves to, the treatments recommended here. The summary of treatment recommendations is keyed according to the level of confidence with which each recommendation is made and coded to show the nature of its supporting evidence.

Highly informative and easy to use, this eminently practical volume is organized into three major parts: Part A contains treatment recommendations (Section I, treatment summaries; Section II, treatment plans; Section III, special clinical considerations; and Section IV, risk management issues during treatment), Part B presents the evidence underlying these treatment recommendations (Section V, an overview of DSM-IV-TR criteria, prevalence rates, and natural history and course; and Section VI, a review of existing treatment literature), and Part C summarizes those areas in which better research data are needed.

Remarkably concise and comprehensive, this practice guideline continues to be an indispensable reference for every clinician who treats patients with this heterogeneous and complex disorder. ... Read more

Product Description
"Everyone expects me to have goals for the future. I'm just struggling to survive each day." - Client with BPD

Such is the struggle of persons with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) who are plagued by chronic urges to harm themselves, overwhelming emotions, impulsivity, and problematic relationships. For these individuals every day, and sometimes, every moment, can be a struggle to get through. The tasks of daily life which most people seem to handle with minimal discomfort, leave the Borderline client feeling confused, overwhelmed, and inadequate. Further, chronic urges to mutilate or kill themselves place them at high risk of hospitalization or even death.

Borderline Personality Disorder: Struggling, Understanding, Succeeding is an easy to understand must read for clinicians of all backgrounds. The title not only describes the process of recovering, but also the process care providers must go through to live with and treat BPD. The struggling client with BPD must learn to understand her behavior in order to change it. Likewise, the struggling clinician must learn to understand the Borderline client before they will be able to provide successful interventions.

Struggling, Understanding, Succeeding describes the struggles facing clients with Borderline Personality Disorder as well as the professionals and loved ones caring for them. Dr. Warner argues that by understanding these individual’s behaviors and changing our negative ways of thinking about them, we can become more satisfied and successful in our work. In down to earth language with practical examples, this book provides an overview of the current knowledge base regarding Borderline Personality Disorder and an introduction to the concepts of Dialectic Behavioral Therapy. Concrete strategies are described for assessing and intervening with clients who self injure along with a list of "Things to Try Instead of Hurting Yourself."

If you don’t have hours to pour over research articles and textbooks, this book will summarize them for you and translate them into real world strategies. ... Read more

Product Description
Dr. Gerald Faris, clinical psychologist, lecturer and former assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine and Dr. Ralph Faris, professor of sociology and Director of the Honors Program at the College of Philadelphia explain their findings about the lives of two icons of 1960s music and how each suffered from a little known, complicated condition now clinically defined as “borderline personality disorder.” Living in the Dead Zone: Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison -Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder describes the torment of these two personalities–Joplin, the top female blues artist and Morrison, the influential rocker and lead singer of The Doors.

The most captivating aspects of the book are the simulated psychotherapy sessions between Janis and then Jim, and an experienced, psychoanalytic psychotherapist. The sessions are riveting and reveal the devastating and relentless nature of the disorder. To those who are irresistibly drawn to the powerful music of these two personalities, Living in the Dead Zone provides insights into their behaviors that are both accessible and provocative. The authors have presented an account of the two performers that has broader applications to the many in our society who suffer from a borderline condition.

This book is designed to increase public awareness of the disorder and to assist mental health workers to recognize patients so afflicted.Living in the Dead Zone may also help readers distinguish between the social and the psychological, between cultural trends allowing for easy acceptance of individual idiosyncrasies and the common recognition of emotional imbalance.

Product Description
There are many approaches to the treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder. In this volume, the editors interview the major proponents of these approaches. The book contains fourteen interviews with a diverse range of therapists. The questions are the same, but the answers are as different as the personalities of the respondents. They discuss the major principles of their treatment, their professional development, and their differences. The interviews also reveal the people behind the theories. What personal motives made them want to work with patients so often considered _difficult_? Why did they choose or develop the specific methods that they use? ... Read more

Product Description
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex condition whose severity is compounded by the heterogeneous psychological functioning of those who suffer from the disorder. These differences have made the identification of a unified treatment difficult. Attempts have been made to reduce the effect of this variation within the disorder by investigating subtypes of BPD. However, the clinical utility of this approach has not been examined. This book investigates the presence of subgroups of BPD and examines whether treatment effectiveness varies as a function of subtype.Using variables that are central to cognitive behavioural models of BPD, subgroups are identified and defined on the basis of whether participants attribute the causes of negative events as being themselves or other people. The findings of this research suggest that not only can theoretically valid subgroups of BPD be identified, but that these subgroups have clinical utility in understanding sufferers? responses to intervention. These analyses should be useful to both researchers and professionals seeking to better understand the complex nature of the borderline personality diagnosis. ... Read more
