Product Description
My Enemy, Myself is a personal journey through the recovery from Borderline Personality Disorder, depression and Posttraumatic Stress Syndrome. Told with a balance of poetry and prose, the author recalls her journey through chaos, realization, therapy, and recovery. Whether you have been through similar trauma in your life or know someone who has, My Enemy, Myself was written for the reader to identify with the emotions, thought patterns, and self-actualizations. Labeled as a "highly functioning borderline," the author was able to mask many of her symptoms and issues from those around her for decades. It is now her turn to do the unthinkable...tell all that happened to her. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars True inspiration
Meri Kennedy is a true inspiration to us all.The way she describes her childhood and all the trauma is phenomenal. She is a gifted writer. Each one of her poems was like an introduction to each chapter. Each chapter seemed to be a chapter of her life.Survivors need someone to turn to and this was a great book to turn to.I know many people will benefit from her book and become inspired themselves.I would encourage anyone to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars PHENOMENAL Book - It Should Be Made Into a Movie!
This is an absolutely phenomenal book. It's as suspenseful as the best of novels on the one hand, and it includes the author's poetry on the other. It is also a crime story told from the victim's perspective, and from that angle it's heartbreaking. The author was sexually assaulted by her own older brother, as sadistic and manipulative a creature as any found in the annals of literature, for many, many years, starting before she even started kindergarten. How the author, Meri Kennedy, was able to emerge from all of this is a triumph, and it makes for great reading too! There is a universality to this story whether the reader has ever experienced abuse or not. I've heard it said that evil can only exist in the darkness whenever someone sheds a light on evil, it's illuminated and stopped in its tracks. The fact that Ms. Kennedy had the guts to shine a light on the evil that she was forced to endure in her own home, while the unpunished perpetrator is still alive, is nothing short of amazing. It reminds me of all the sayings about how lotus flowers only get the chance to bloom after rising above the mud.I highly recommend this incredible book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meri Kennedy's Book is Great - Her Same Abuser Had Threatened Me Too
I wanted to say just how relieved I was to read this book - if it is possible to be relieved by reading a book concerning the rape of a child - by Meri Kennedy. It was a relief to me, though, because at one time I knew one of Ms. Kennedy's abusers, and he threatened me, too -and later made up all kinds of mindless, ludicrous lies to try to cover himself and his hideous actions. The man is a rampaging sadist. It is with remarkable, stunning courage that Ms. Kennedy has sat down and written this book, and I applaud her efforts wholeheartedly. The more people can read and find out about the minds of the kinds of people like this decent, gutsy woman's abusers, the better. Thank you for writing this, Ms. Kennedy, and I wish all the very best to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
As a counselor for women that have experienced abuse, I am always in search of clarity and understanding for the serious problems that are often consequences of trauma. I found that reading this book has helped me approach the subject of borderline personality disorder and trauma due to child abuse with a greater and deeper understanding and by doing so, will help to empower those women that are working so strongly on their own persoanl growth.
I encourage professionals and anyone interested in learning to feel about this subject to read My Enemy, myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done! "My Enemy, Myself" should be required reading for health care professionals... and ...
Well done! "My Enemy, Myself" should be required reading for health care professionals...and...anyone in the human race.Thank you Ms. Kennedy for sharing your story and affirming that good triumphs over evil.

Product Description
Borderline Personality Disorder is a complex and perplexing psychiatric disorder. Because the behaviours displayed by individuals with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder demand a lot of attention from mental health professionals there has been much interest recently in the aetiology of Borderline Personality Disorder. This book reviews the recent empirical evidence in terms of the possible childhood antecedents of Borderline Personality Disorder. In particular the book examines the link between childhood trauma, childhood family environments and the development of Borderline Personality Disorder during adulthood. An empricial study exploring the link between Borderline Personality Disorder and reports of childhood events is reported. The book also examines the possible mediating effects of core beliefs and schemas in the relationship between childhood environment and Borderline Personality Disorder. This book hence examines a possible explanation for the link between Borderline Personality Disorder and childhood environments. The book is ideal for researchers, students and health practitioners within the mental health field ... Read more

Product Description
For decades a pervasive therapeutic pessimism has surrounded attempts to work with clients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) with this population viewed as ¿too difficult¿ or ¿impossible to work with¿. Treatments such as dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) for BPD have provided a basis for therapy for which there is increasing evidence of successful outcomes.Despite this, the pervasive pessimism has been slow to lift. While providing training and supervision for mental health professionals in rural New South Wales, Australia, the author noted anecdotal evidence that DBT may facilitate a positive change in clinician responses. This book explores the experience of mental health clinicians undertaking training in DBT and practicing as DBT therapists. Clinicians described an enhanced capacity for self-awareness and ¿living life to the full¿ that translates into a more optimistic and humanistic approach to people diagnosed with BPD. This book provides a challenge to prevailing mental health discourse and practice associated with BPD and will be of interest to clinicians, educators and those planning and managing mental health services. ... Description:
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) was initially developed and evaluated as an outpatient treatment program for chronically suicidal individuals meeting criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD). Within the last few years, several adaptations to specific settings have been developed. This study aims to evaluate a three-month DBT inpatient treatment program. Clinical outcomes, including changes on measures of psychopathology and frequency of self-mutilating acts, were assessed for 50 female patients meeting criteria for BPD. Thirty-one patients had participated in a DBT inpatient program, and 19 patients had been placed on a waiting list and received treatment as usual in the community. Post-testing was conducted four months after the initial assessment (i.e. four weeks after discharge for the DBT group). Pre-post-comparison showed significant changes for the DBT group on 10 of 11 psychopathological variables and significant reductions in self-injurious behavior. The waiting list group did not show any significant changes at the four-months point. The DBT group improved significantly more than participants on the waiting list on seven of the nine variables analyzed, including depression, anxiety, interpersonal functioning, social adjustment, global psychopathology and self-mutilation. Analyses based on Jacobson's criteria for clinically relevant change indicated that 42% of those receiving DBT had clinically recovered on a general measure of psychopathology. The data suggest that three months of inpatient DBT treatment is significantly superior to non-specific outpatient treatment. Within a relatively short time frame, improvement was found across a broad range of psychopathological features. Stability of the recovery after one month following discharge, however, was not evaluated and requires further study. ... Read more

Description:
The current study examined the relationships among biological predisposition, social environment, emotion regulation, and features characteristic of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Using an analogue sample, we examined whether thought suppression mediated the relationship of negative affective intensity/reactivity and perceived parental criticism with a composite of BPD features including impulsivity, interpersonal sensitivity, and aggression. Results indicated that thought suppression fully mediated the relationship between negative affect intensity/reactivity and BPD features and partially mediated the relationship between BPD features and perceived parental criticism. Clinical implications, directions for further research, and limitations of the present study are discussed. ... Read more

Description:
The present study investigated the consistency of self-reports of childhood traumatic events in a sample of 50 patients with a borderline personality disorder (BPD) before and after 27 months of intensive treatment with schema focused therapy or transference focused psychotherapy. The mean number of reported sexual, physical and emotional traumatic events did not change following treatment. Test-retest correlations of the trauma-interview also indicated high stability of the total number of sexual, physical and emotional events reported. The majority of the patients, however, did no longer report at least one of the 33 listed events after psychotherapy, and the majority reported at least one event that they had not mentioned before the start of treatment. These findings were not related to type of treatment or changes in suppression, intrusions, avoidance of intrusions, dissociative symptoms, depressive symptoms, and borderline symptoms. ... Description:
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is considered one of the most promising treatments for borderline personality disorder (BPD). Recently, we reported significantly positive effects of 12 months DBT on parasuicidal behaviour and impulsivity in a mixed group of female BPD patients with and without substance abuse. Fifty-eight women with BPD were randomly assigned to either 52 weeks of DBT or treatment as usual (TAU). Follow-up assessment took place at 78 weeks, i.e., 6 months after discontinuation of DBT. Participants were clinical referrals from addiction treatment and psychiatric services. Outcome measures included parasuicidal behaviour, impulsivity and substance abuse. Six months after treatment discontinuation, the benefits of DBT over TAU in terms of lower levels of parasuicidal and impulsive behaviours, and in alcohol use, sustained. No differences between the treatment conditions were found for drug abuse. In conclusion, DBT seems to have a sustained effect on some of the core symptoms of BPD and on alcohol problems in a mixed population of female borderline patients with and without substance abuse problems. ...
