Product Description

From the author of Seven Loves comes this austere, passionately shaped collection of stories that courageously explores the dynamic nature of modern marriage, the life-shattering heartbreak that often accompanies its collapse, and the fickle way in which the boundaries between us can be broken, erased, and newly defined.

At her daughter’s wedding, an alcoholic widow finds a new beginning when she is swept off her feet by the bride’s former secret lover. A man finds himself in a position of terrible power when he discovers his ex-wife’s boyfriend with another woman. A woman who killed her policeman husband in a rage struggles to reconcile feelings of emotional worthlessness and a longing for human affection after two decades in prison. A widower of twenty-three years introduces his wary daughters to his new love, a woman whom he has decided to marry one week after meeting, and who once took an axe to a bear to save her husband.

Trueblood unites past and present through her characters’ complex personalities as she skillfully unravels their tumultuous relationships, giving readers a glimpse into marital circumstances that, though often tragic, will surely ring familiar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marry or Burn - Can you only read it once?
When you read a MARRY OR BURN story, you enter a world -a world where you may actually meet yourself. Each story peels back experience the way our own memory does. You will encounter a bear attack, prison time, on-line dating, death, addiction, children, happiness, weddings, infidelities, even redemption. These characters, relationships, choices, and trajectories of life events are ultimately our own. How do we become who we are - change, fail, succeed, persist?

Trueblood has an astonishing and groundbreaking command of her craft and of the short story as a form. Her language is simultaneously lush and spare.Nothing is extraneous. What she omits is as eloquent and integral as what she includes.

I emerged from the book feeling more mindful, more engaged, happier, sadder, and more alive. Everything Trueblood speaks of is deeply significant to our one short lifetime together.

I am already rereading the book. These stories will draw you back time and again.

Product Description

“Florey writes with verve.”—Slate.com

“Florey . . . rattles off crackling prose in a no-nonsense voice.”—The San Diego Union-Tribune

Steeped in the Palmer Method of handwriting she learned in Catholic school, Kitty Burns Florey is a self-confessed “penmanship nut” who loves the act of taking pen to paper. So when she discovered that schools today forego handwriting drills in favor of teaching something called keyboarding, it gave her pause: “There is a widespread belief that, in a digital world, forming letters on paper with a pen is pointless and obsolete,” she says, “and anyone who thinks otherwise is right up there with folks who still have fallout shelters in their backyards.”

Florey tackles the importance of writing by hand and its place in our increasingly electronic society in this fascinating exploration of the history of handwriting. Weaving together the evolution of writing implements and scripts, pen collecting societies, the golden age of American penmanship, the growth in popularity of handwriting analysis, and the pockets of aficionados who still prefer scribbling on paper to tapping on keys, she poses the question: Is writing by hand really no longer necessary in today’s busy world?

Kitty Burns Florey is the author of Sister Bernadette’s Barking Dog: The Quirky History and Lost Art of Diagramming Sentences. A veteran copy editor, she has also written nine novels and many short stories and essays. She lives in central Connecticut with her husband, Ron Savage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Readable Book About a Lovable Endangered Species
Full disclosure---when I bought this book, shortly after it came out, I was so taken with it I wrote the author a fan letter. She immediately filed a restraining order against me, and I was legally constrained from sending her any more mail. No, no, no, just kidding! She wrote back---a handwritten letter, needless to say---and we have corresponded since, But she does not have any idea I'm posting this review.Certainly she did not ask me to write it, nor would she have.

Will handwriting survive? It is not hard to imagine a day in the not-overly-distant future, when penilliteracy--I made that term up---will be rampant across the land.As it is today, I suspect lots of people use handwriting only when they are required to sign a legal document. They don't write checks anymore, because of debit cards and online banking. So, for a lot of people, handwritinghas become analogous to singing. A century ago, people sang a lot more---in church, in community gatherings, or around the piano at home with family and friends. But now we tend much more to associate music with recorded music, and the participatory element has diminished. And because people don't sing much, they get out of practice, and on about the only remaining occasion on which we still do---a birthday party---people often sound dreadful, and very self-conscious. ( I know I do.)And people are that way about their handwriting. They don't have to use a pen, so their handwriting deteriorates, to the point where they are terribly embarrassed when other people see their ungainly scrawl. That embarrassment is a hopeful sign to me, because it signifies that people still feel having good, legible penmanship is something to be valued.

Next time you go into an antique store, thumb through the boxfuls of old postcards. You'll discover that beautiful penmanship eighty and ninety years ago was not a gift bestowed upon the few. You'll see lovely script on every card. And they had to contend with quirky nibs and bottles of ink!I believe anybody who wishes to improve his or her handwriting is capable of doing it, with help from a class in calligraphy, or perhaps a software program. The question is whether the interest in having good handwriting skills will ever resurge; maybe it will not.Few people are nostalgic today for the days when you had to make your own soap, and maybe in time handwriting will fade altogether.

Kitty Burns Florey is a graceful writer, and frequently funny, and her book is hardly a starchy schoolmarmish finger-wagger.She makes good handwriting sound very cool, and very desirable.Which I certainly have long felt.If you've read this review this far you are probably going to enjoy this spirited and informative book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleasant Read
This is really a very short work on the subject lasting some 190pp including the credits.

The writer is humorous and displays a wealth of knowledge on the subject and makes you want to read on while talking about subject matter that many would find only boring; yet I found interesting UNTIL the last chapter. It is as if another person wrote that or some editor suggested that this short volume be lengthened to give it more meat or a broader point in keeping with the subject matter. I saw little if any point to the last chapter and would liken it to a name dropper at a cocktail party.Lots of names, light fluff and very little substance to the conversation. But I would still buy the book, for its free flowing manner, less the last chapter. One can easily finish it in two evenings as I did.I would say the book contains little of anything you NEED to know, but A LOT OF THINGS that are fun to know and contemplate. And yes it will be more beneficial to those of an age to have benefited from the Palmerian school of handwriting.I doubt that any of the millenial generation would find it that enthralling, even though it does have a myriad of pictures and drawings to help sustain their interest.Buy the book and enjoy it, simply skip the last chapter.Your life will still feel just as fulfilled as before!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Write Stuff
Dr. Izzie Stevens on Grey's Anatomy says penmanship saves lives. "Is that a 7 or a 9? If I have to ask myself that in the middle of an emergency, your patient is dead. You killed him with your handwriting." The most deadly medical instrument is a pen.

The author says penmanship used to be taught for two hours a week in elementary school. Now it is down to 45 minutes. Only 12 percent of teachers feel their education courses prepared them for teaching handwriting. If people who can't count were teaching math, it would be on 60 Minutes. No one suggested calculators mean we don't have to teach kids to add. Why should typewriters/computers cease teaching writing?
What happened to pen pals?

Like snowflakes, fingerprints and faces, no two hands are alike. Writing is a form of self presentation, uniqueness and creativity.

Try to go a day without writing anything down. You can't sit down and reread a phone call.

Journaling is recommended for healing, grieving, recovering, spirituality, stress management, fun, discipline and publication. How will people learn to do this anymore?

Whoever thought there were this many types of pens that she mentions: ballpoints, fountain, rollerballs, fine and superfine and bold points, micro points, needle points, gel pens, felt-tips, highlighters, comfort grips, non-slip grips, rubber grips, precision grips, classic grips, airplane-safe pens (won't leak), water-resistant pens, fade-resistant pens, pens specially formulated to prevent fraud, latex-free pens, go-anywhere pens (clip it, hang it, wear it), erasable pens, expandable pens, pens with built-in highlighters, won't bleed through paper pens, permanent markers, washable markers, china markers, click pencils, pencils that support breast cancer research, refillable pens, never-need-sharpening pencils, drafting pencils, anti-microbial pencils, scented pencils...

There is even a pen that can be used to sign autographs at a distance.

Let's celebrate on Jan. 23--National Handwriting Day. Write a recipe or a letter.

Thank you for the reminder!

5-0 out of 5 stars Light, Learned and a Delight to Read
By Bill Marsano. In the New York Times' daily crossword puzzle of July 3, the clue for 37 Across (seven letters) was "Calligraphy, some say." It was one of the last answers I filled in: "Lost Art." I hate to admit it, but it's true. And now here's Kitty Burns Florey to tell us some marvelous things about well, not calligraphy, exactly, but the plain and simple act of writing by hand with pen or pencil. Like me, she grew up in Catholic schools and was schooled in a writing style called the Palmer Method (she remains loyal; I have defected long since), so the subject is personal to her. To that she has added research and her own grace as a writer. The result is this absorbing, captivating and anecdotal book.

Along the nicely illustrated way we learn plenty of interesting things. Who'd have thought that in early 18th Century London a clerk or a contractor would write so fine a hand that his bill "for work and materials" on a house in Tower Hill would be a thing of beauty in itself, preserved and admired to this day? Who'd have thought that the beautiful writing by commoners would spark a backlash amongst the upper crust, who would distinguish themselves from lesser folk by scribbling as sloppily as possible? That Copperplate, Spencerian and Palmer method were all "scientific" styles, distinct and replete with rules, rules, rules not only about the shapes of letters but proper posture for the writer and whence must come the light source?

As a professional writer I am bound to my computer--even as I compose this review--as once I was to the typewriter, but still I write with a fountain pen every day (Parker Duofold, italic nib) and have a dozen other back-up pens. I use them all from time to time, to sign checks and letters, and especially to address envelopes. Here's why: everybody gets junk mail, and it'sobviously junk. But suppose that in your daily stack you were to see an envelope that was just as obviously addressed by hand, by a real person? You'd open it first, of course. Lost art though it may be, calligraphy still counts in some places. Thank-you and sympathy notes must be hand-written. Some people even hire calligraphers to address invitations because the touch of a human hand means so much. (There are numerous computer typefaces that mimic handwriting. don't even dream of them. They are pathetic. )

And so I recommend this book even as I forgive Ms. Florey for being a copy editor and for paying insufficient attention to Chancery Cursive, even as I recommend that you but this book and invest ten bucks more in a Sheaffer Mini Calligraphy Kit (also available from Amazon) so you can, after just a little practice, see what PERSONAL expression looks like.--Bill Marsano is an award-winning writer on travel, wine and spirits.

5-0 out of 5 stars History, art, and self-expression at your fingertips
If you lament the decline of handwriting, //Script & Scribble// provides thoughtful validity to your concerns. But it's also a celebration of the artistry and intellect in handwriting. Florey covers the evolution of handwriting from the Sumerians to the ubiquitous urban graffiti. She includes the historical development of writing implements from the ancient stylus to the ballpoint pen. She takes what some consider a boring topic on an ailing craft and makes it respectable, creative, and lighthearted. To get the most from this book, you need at least a mild interest in history, art, or trivia. I found it fascinating, but then, I would sit enthralled through a Ben Stein lecture on the history of almost anything.

Right or wrong, there was a time when people were judged harshly by their handwriting. Many believed the mind was trained through the discipline of the hand. Florey shares the styles and beliefs of handwriting masters whose patience and creativity were esteemed. But as civilization advanced, the tension between flashy and functional writing increased. I agree with Florey that receiving a handwritten note is a pleasure; for handwriting is near the heart. I am also grateful for the book's demonstrations that helped improve my handwriting.

Product Description
The companion volume to the PBS television series, with more than 500 full-color and black-and-white illustrations

This lavish and handsomely produced book captures all the beauty, complexity, and power of New York -- the city that seems the very embodiment of ambition, aspiration, romance, desire; the city that has epitomized the entire parade of modern life, with all its possibilities and problems. Chronicling the story of New York from its establishment as a Dutch trading post in 1624 to its global preeminence today, the book is at once the biography of a great city and a vivid exploration of the myriad forces -- commercial, cultural, demographic -- that converged in New York to usher in the contemporary world.

Weaving the strands of the city's sweeping history into a single compelling narrative, New York carries us through nearly four centuries of turbulent growth and change -- from the first settlement on the tip of "Manna-hata" Island to the destruction wrought by the Revolutionary War; to the city's stunning emergence in the nineteenth century as the nation's premier industrial metropolis; to the waves of early-twentieth-century immigration that forever transformed the city and the nation; to New York's transfiguration as the world's first modern city -- pioneering skyscrapers, apartment houses, subways, and highways -- and its role as the birthplace of so much of American popular culture. Along the way, we witness the building of the city's celebrated landmarks and neighborhoods, from the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building and the United Nations; from Wall Street and Times Square to the Lower East Side, Harlem, and SoHo.

The book brims with vibrant illustrations, including hundreds of rare photographs, paintings, lithographs, prints, and period maps. The narrative incorporates the voices and stories of men and women -- statesmen, entrepreneurs, artists, and visionaries -- who have lived in and built the city: an extraordinary cast of characters that includes Peter Stuyvesant, Alexander Hamilton, John Jacob Astor, Walt Whitman, Boss Tweed, Jacob Riis, Emma Lazarus, J. P. Morgan, Al Smith, F. Scott Fitzgerald, George Gershwin, Fiorello La Guardia, Robert Moses, and Jane Jacobs.

Accompanying the book's narrative are interviews with Robert A. Caro, David Levering Lewis, and Robert A. M. Stern, and essays by a group of distinguished New York historians and critics -- Kenneth T. Jackson, Mike Wallace, Marshall Berman, Phillip Lopate, Carol Berkin, and Daniel Czitrom -- who add their insights about the city to this splendid history.

From the Hardcover edition.Amazon.com Review
There are a million stories in the wicked city, and NewYork: An Illustrated History contains hundreds of them. From its17th-century beginnings as a small Dutch colony on the far edge of anempire to its late-20th-century status as one of the world's greatestcities, New York has been home to millions of fascinatingpeople. Take, for example, Edward Hyde, royal governor of New Yorkfrom 1702 to 1708. Hyde, cousin of Queen Anne, was heartily dislikedby the colonists--in part because he was reputed to dress in women'sclothing ("I represent a woman, and ought in all respects to resembleher as faithfully as I can," Hyde was reported to have said). Or AlSmith, son of immigrants, a day laborer, who worked his way up thepolitical ladder and eventually became Governor of New York. Or RosieSafran, a seamstress who survived the horrible fire that claimed 146of her coworkers at the Triangle shirtwaist factory.

PBS darling RicBurns (brother of Ken) teamed up withJamesSanders and LisaAdes to produce this spectacular volume and the accompanying12-hour series. Some 500 illustrations enhance the narrative, whileessays by and interviews with prominent New Yorkers--RobertA. Caro, Carol Berkin, and DavidLevering Lewis among them--highlight their visions of themetropolis, past and present. New Yorkers or not, readers will enjoystories of how the city grew and changed over time--such as in 1699,when the old Dutch city wall was torn down and a later-to-be-famousstreet laid out in its place; or in a 10-day period in 1930, when 14new floors of the Empire State Building were erected. Along the way,the authors debunk a few myths: the Dutch didn't really pay only $24for Manhattan, and no immigrant's name was known to have been changedby the Ellis Island inspectors--though the ships' manifests they wereconsulting may have been incorrect.

Burns and company are clearly enamored of New York, seeing it as "theultimate city of dreaming and desire, a place of passage andtransformation, of possibility and exchange, of mingled cultures andidentities." They also see New York, with all its ups, downs, problems, and triumphs, as a microcosm of the modern world. Lavish, thorough, and pleasantly warm, New York: An Illustrated Historyreminds us that, yes, it's a wonderful town. --Sunny Delaney ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Epic
Washington, D.C. may be the capitol of the United States, but New York is the capitol of America. Throughout American history, New York has been the country's trailblazer, pioneering methods of transportation, communications, and commerce, spawning new forms of popular culture, experimenting with radical politics, and most importantly, establishing itself as the very essence of the capitalistic, democratic melting pot America has come to symbolize. This beautifully illustrated tome is part mesmerizing coffee table book and part in-depth history text, detailing nearly four centuries of life in the nation's most dynamic city.

The book contains a wealth of information on the city's unique dynamics, including the turbulent relationships between wealthy elites, poor immigrants from every corner of the Earth, and the African American population that forms the city's second oldest demographic group. Social upheaval has been a frequent feature of New York life, which is unsurprising in light of the city's extremes of wealth and poverty. "An Illustrated History" tells the stories of many of these conflicts: the Civil War draft riots, the Triangle shirtwaist fire and the labor reforms that came in its wake, the devastation of the Great Depression, and much more. It also tells a story of social change, including the efforts of reformers such as Al Smith and Fiorello La Guardia and the struggle of each ethnic group to find its own version of the American dream.

500 full color and black-and-white photographs and illustrations make for a visual feast, from charming illustrations of New York in its early rural state to iconic photographs of daring workers atop skyscraper frames to Jacob Riis' groundbreaking images of life in the city's poorest tenements. I did find myself wishing, however, that the book included some modern maps.

This epic book spans such a wide arc of history--and includes so many facets of that history-- that it is impossible to sum up in a single review. It's a good thing there is so much to devour, because you won't want to put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make this you first choice.
For a city like New York one book can never really fit the whole history. But if you're looking for the place to start then this is it.
It has good research on all periods of development and culture, with great images that come up a treat on the large format quality stock paper. the editing and design are nice too.
It draws from the PBS series from the late ninties, but this version has an extra update at the end to accomodate 9/11.
I remember seeing the TV series on air, but cannot find it in region 4 DVD format, so the book was the only way I could get the information from it.
As mentioned above you can never fit all of NYC in one book; either you cut all the bits down too much or focus on certain parts; there is a focus, as is common, on Manhatten.
But whenever you come across parts where you want to know more this book provides enough threads for research to go on and find out.
Curiously, there are periods of the book that use particular writers of NYC as themes to contextualize its history such as Walt Whitman and F Scott Fitzgerald.
A great way to begin learning about the greatest city on earth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, great, great
For anyone wanting a history of New York City, for whatever reason, this companion book to the DVD series is superior. There is very little left out, yet it is succinct and readable.Highly recommended.

As an upper-elementary school teacher, I have used the activities in this book to supplement the regular math textbook with students in grades 4, 5, and even 6.The lessons are all constructivist in theory, so they are all highly engaging for the students, and most of them do not require expensive materials to implement. The students loved the math games and hands-on activities, and I believe that they have helped the students to grasp a greater understanding of the concepts underlying multiplication! The lessons are pretty easy to follow and to assess the students' understanding. Please check out this book, as well as the many other titles by Marilyn Burns and/or Maryann Wickett... you and your students won't regret it!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars very bad delivery time
I ordered this item on 9/24 and received it on 10/19. I think this is very unacceptable. I ordered a book the same week i received this one from amazon and received it before i did this book. This the first time it has ever taken this long for me or my friends that order off of here to receive any book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Nursing Research:Building an Evidence-Based Practice
I bought this book on the advice of my professor. It was not the book that the college sent for our class. This book is so much better for nursing research than the one that came with our class. I have pretty much read the book from front to back already and the course isn't even half over. I have also been able to utilize the book in my Nursing Capstone. It has been extremely useful. Recommend it highly to anyone taking Nursing Research who gets a different book for class. It was well worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Book About Cool Stuff!
A great book!Been meaning to get it for years!Bob Burns=cool stuff.I just wish there were a few more photos from this amazing collection of props, masks, and costumes!

4-0 out of 5 stars I only have old paint cans in my basement
If you've enjoyed the scifi and monster movies of the 50s and 60s, you may enjoy this book as much as I did. Bob Burns obvious enthusiasm for his work and the love and appreciation he shows for his friend, the often unheralded Paul Blaisdell, is truly heartwarming. Sincere, informative and some times funny, this is a delightful read packed with cool photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not big enough
This is a great book. I collect toy robots and other sci fi toys and souveniers. But Bob Burns is the ultimate, and my only complaint is, this book isn't big enough. I know Mr. Burns has a lot more than what made it in this book, and would love to see a sequel to it. With digital model making, the stuff Mr. Burns has will soon be non existant, so thank God there is a guy like this to preseve some great historic movie memorobelia.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE DREAM HOUSE OF BOB BURNS!
Bob Burns is the foremost collector of sci-fi and horror memorabilia, and it's all kept in his basement. This book is a guided tour through Bob's remarkable collection of props, costumes and other items that Bob has collected for nearly 50 years with anecdotal stories by Bob about how he acquired the items, as well as Bob's life long experiences both in front of and behind the cameras of Hollywood.

There's a pair of Frankenstein's boots worn by Glenn Steele, the Captain America costume worn by Dick Purcell in the Captain America serial, costumes from Flash Gordon...There's models of the rockets from George Pal's "Destination Moon" and a replica of The Time Machine.Latex props from Alien and The Terminator..space helmets and laster blasters from 50's era TV and films.A marvelous collection and the object of envy of baby boomers everywhere.

in addition we'll learn of Bob's background as a makeup artist and the films he worked on as well as his short-lived career as a horror magazine publisher who went head-to-head with Famous Monsters of Filmland. We'll see Bob's long career playing a gorilla in appearances on shows like The Lucy Show as well as the short-lived Saturday morning show Ghostbusters.

From there Bob takes us through the many years of putting on some of the most elaborate Halloween displays and shows to ever show up in suburban America with help from guys who would go onto become some of the most famous special effects gurus in Hollywood like Dennis Muren.

This is a fun and utterly engrossing travel through time as we tour Bob's collection and see items that he saved from the garbage heap.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Alot of fun for the Monster Kids

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the concept book I was looking for
After I read the reviews for this book, I immediately checked it out of our local library. My son loves anything that has to do with math, and we are always looking for books about the subject.I have to say I was disappointed in the book, and my son was bored with it.It is rare that he is not glued to a math concept book, but this one just did not do it for him.The repetitve verse, "...I am Amanda Bean and I count everything..." started to grate on his nerves to the point he said, "why does she keep saying that?"I am not sure exactly how this introduces children to multiplication because you never actually see Amanda figure out a problem that shows how to compute that type of problem. It would have been nice if the author had shown at least one problem being solved using multiplication so that it tied her "concept" to real world math. Much better books on the subject are Math Curse by Jon Sciezska (I have reviewed that one as well) or books by Greg Teng.My advice is go to your library and get the book before you make the investment in your own copy.I just can't imagine a child wanting to read the story over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is an excellent book.It is a wonderful way to introduce multiplication to children. As a 1st year teacher I used this book to introduce a lesson on multiplication with my 3rd grade class. They loved it and it was very interactive. We stopped to talk about and solve the various problems throughout the book.Every teacher needs a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable and educational
I try to teach my six year old daugher math through children's literature, and this book rates highly in that area. She loves the story and I love how it introduces multiplication in a fun and easy to understand manner. The explanation of a "fast way to count" really clicked with my daugher. She asks me to read this book over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amanda Bean's Amazing Dream: A Mathematical Story
This is one of a genre of books wherein the beauty and elegance of a mathematical concept is revealed to the main character in a dream (others notables inlude MATH CURSE by Jon Scieszka and THE NUMBER DEVIL by Hans Magnus Enzensberger). This book is a marvelous way to integrate literature with mathematics and I have found it useful to aid in the introduction ofmultiplication to students in my 3rd grade. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Meatball the Pirate
Once upon a time many years ago I watched my daughter Emma play with her cousin Brian, whom Emma lovingly referred to as Meatball, and I wondered how long it would take before he began to cry. At eight years old Meatball looked like a smaller version of Rhett Butler, he talked with a squeaky voice that was struggling to mature, and his blondish hair oddly matched the color of his skin. Every game between the two kids eventually turned sour--a bump of the head, a twisted arm or even harsh words would send the boy reeling into the kitchen looking for comfort. While I admired his theatrics, I did not acknowledge them. Emma, on the other hand, like to pretend he was her plaything, a doll she collected. Take, for example, the afternoon she dressed him up like a pirate and sent him out into the yard with a steak knife searching for the neighborhood tabby cat. Florence, the woman that lived across the street and spent most of her days with her nose between the blinds of her front window, knocked on my door and demanded that I do something. I invited her in for coffee but she ranted and raved, cluck-clucking about manners and responsibilities and child-rearing, none of which I particularly cared to hear about. Meatball ran inside and tugged at Florence's blue polyester pants. "Don't worry," he said. "I buried the knife in the backyard." Florence grabbed his wrist and told him that he needed to dig it back up. He sighed heavily, stared at the ground and then began to cry. I pulled the cigarettes from the pocket of my robe, lit it, and waved him inside.

Charlotte, Meatball's mother, picked him up every day at 5 o'clock. She sat on the couch with Meatball on her lap and listened as he recounted his day. She disregarded any of Emma's attempts to defend herself when Meatball claimed she had harmed him. But who would believe an eight-year-old boy that said his cousin had instructed him to hunt for prey and bring back souvenirs?

BANNED IN THE UNITED STATES AND ENGLAND FOR NEARLY 200 YEARS: Scotland's celebrated national poet and bad-boy, Robert Burns, was born on January 25, 1759 and died in the summer of 1796 at the tender age of thirty-seven. In between those two dates, he did a lot of loving. He also wrote a lot of poetry and sang a lot of songs about it, some of which were never intended for public consumption. From Burns' secret collection, here are thirty-seven of his finest, in a highly readable, new, English translation, including favorites like "The Fornicator" "Our Goodwife's So Modest" and "No Hair On It". 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
Being a fan of all things film, I was naturally overjoyed when my girlfriend recently presented me with this book. Having seen the three great films featured in it, I approached the text with high expectationsand was most definately not let down. My favourite part of the book is theintroduction by Burns, wherein he writes openly of how he came to be afilm-maker and also how he eventually made his debut feature and finallygot it distributed. The standout of the three scripts is 'The BrothersMcMullen', which presents an amusing look into family life andrelationships that just about everyone can identify with. The film, whichwon the Best Picture Prize at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, is equallyamusing to read as it is to watch, as are the other two scripts, 'She's theOne' and 'No Looking Back'. As a film student myself, I found this book tobe great reading and count it as one of my favourite script compilations(along with 'Clerks & Chasing Amy : Two Screenplays' by Kevin Smith). Ithoroughly recommend it for anyone who has any kind of interest in film, asit certainly a great read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting romantic suspense story!!!
Slow Burn by Heather Graham is an exciting romantic suspense story!!! I enjoyed reading it, couldn't put it down. Spencer's husband has been killed, and she is looking for his killer. Ex-cop and ex-lover David Delgado has been hired to watch over Spencer because someone is threatening her. Spencer and David have feelings for each other that have never died (great backstory on their relationship), but Spencer finds it hard to move on without knowing who killed her husband and allowing him to rest in peace. Truly one of the best contemporary romantic suspense stories that I've read. Lots of characters and possible suspects in this one. 5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome read
Slow burn is an excellent read.I have read of all of Heather Graham's bboks and once again, this is top notch.David's love for Spencer is for all time. Graham makes him come to life and he is very realistic.what you would expect of a virile Latin male.I could fall in love with him.Spencer is feisty and has gumption.although it is a bit sad, the ending makes it all worthwhile. If you're into romantic suspense, the villian is not too hard to figure out.

it's a definite must read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but doesn't quite live up to the title
I love Heather Graham books, but this wasn't my favorite. It's good, but not quite a keeper.Read if you love trying to figure out who-done-it continuously.Too sad of a plot and head spinning with the suspicious actions of everyone around the main characters for me.I felt like I was being jerked around a little bit, led this way and that.Mainly, it just wasn't passionate enough and detailed enough for me in the romance part and that's why I read these books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Slow Burn Burns Up the Pages!!!
Wow!I haven't read a Graham book in a long time and I thought I would try out one of her contemporaries and boy was I shocked!I had only read her historicals all these years. This was excellent! The characters were so real and complex, I loved them!Especially the male lead of David Delgado.Whew, does he burn up the pages!!!

~Spencer Huntington just lost her husband, a police detective, to a brutal murder and now she is faced with the possibilty that the crime wasn't random at all.She needs help and only the trusted help of her husband's best friend and her former lover and ex-cop David Delgado. But, can she do it?She has to.She has to swallow her pride and put the past aside and get to the bottom of this heinous act.

David is from the wrong side of the tracks, being a former Cuban refugee as a child and struggling through life with nothing until his best friend Danny Huntington saved him.Danny made his friends David's too and they both fell in love with the same girl, a petite blonde rich girl named Spencer Montgomery.Ten years later, David is faced with his friend's murder and his widow, the only woman David ever loved.
...
Can their long lost love hinder their efforts for the truth or spur them on to the end?A killer awaits...

Gritty and very well written. As I would expect from Ms. Graham.David is very real and deep.Spencer is no 'rich girl' to be put on a shelf. These two make a real 'slow burn' on the pages and you will wish for more! The only complaint is that the killer is a little farfetched, but all in all, the story make up for it by far!Definate hot romance to read on a hot summer night even though I read it in March, lol.

Selected for the 2009 National Poetry Series by Natasha Trethewey

Set in southern New Mexico, where her family's multicultural history is deeply rooted, the poems in Carrie Fountain's first collection explore issues of progress, history, violence, sexuality, and the self. Burn Lake weaves together the experience of life in the rapidly changing American Southwest with the peculiar journey of Don Juan de Oñate, who was dispatched from Mexico City in the late sixteenth- century by Spanish royalty to settle the so-called New Mexico Province, of which little was known. A letter that was sent to Oñate by the Viceroy of New Spain, asking that should he come upon the North Sea in New Mexico, he should give a detailed report of "the configuration of the coast and the capacity of each harbor" becomes the inspiration for many of the poems in this artfully composed debut. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Sexy and suspenseful
Constance Athelston is a widow with a young son. She also has a gift that she dare not reveal - she can see the dead. After a night of shared passion, she is determined to win the heart of Lucien Blakemore, the Earl of Lyndham. Lucien, however, believes he is cursed - which means that falling in love is too dangerous. But he can't get Constance out of his mind, or his heart. Will these two be able to set aside the obstacles and take hold of true love? Constance struggles because of her gift. She sees visions and can talk to the dead and most people shun her if they find out. Lucien doesn't believe in anything supernatural, which makes a relationship between the two of them difficult to say the least. I thought Constance's ability to love Lucien in the face of almost overwhelming odds was amazing. She is strong and independent, but also has a heart for others.
Lucien is the kind of hero that gets your blood racing. He's a bad boy on the outside, but inside wanting to love and be loved. From the moment he first appeared, to the last scene, I was hooked!
Ms. Burns has an amazing talent. She is able to write an edge-of-your-seat suspense tale that is also an erotic, emotional love story. The love scenes were sensual and passionate with a little bit of naughty mixed in. I loved the secondary characters. Constance's son Jamie, the earl's grandmother, his niece Imogene. And the villain was scary, so evil, yet able to mask his true nature. Dangerous is a passionate tale of love and intrigue, with supernatural elements. You won't want to miss this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous
Constance Athelson doesn't flaunt the fact she can talk to spirits. Left a widow after her husband died on an expedition in Egypt, she allows her friend to talk her into attending the Black Widow's Ball dressed as Isis, the Egyptian goddess. There she has a passionate encounter with a masked man. The vision she has afterward, though, frightens her and she runs from her lover, despite the fact she feels drawn to him.

Lucien Blakemore, Earl of Lyndham, has searched high and low for Isis. When he can't find her he decides to retreat to his home to talk with the man he recently hired to catalogue his Egyptian artifacts. When he arrives he finds his new employee is not a man, but a woman. And she's also his Isis.

Despite the attraction, though, Lucien battles against something permanent. The curse on the Blakemore men means his attraction to Constance can only end in tragedy. Can Constance's love save him from his eventual spiral into madness that has caused death in the last generations of Blakemores, or will Constance help Lucien to get to the bottom of the curse, so they can be together forever?

Hot and erotic, Dangerous pulls at the reader's heartstrings. I fell in love with Constance and Lucien from their first encounter. Both of them face demons of their own, and are strong-willed. The way they battled them, and came to the eventual conclusion, kept me turning the pages and rooting for their happily ever after.

Dangerous is full of interesting side characters who added to the mix. I enjoyed the way Ms. Burns kept me guessing right until the end. I adore things with Egyptian mythology, and a good ghost story always pulls me in. Dangerous has both of those elements, and is sure to charm readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love story with absorbing plot.
This is a story which contains elements of romance, suspence and well rounded realistic characters, making thebook hard to put down. It is also refreshing as it deals with a different storyline from most romance books which cannot escape from the common cliches.

Constance Athelson has a gift which allows her to communicate with the dead and see into the future. Relying on her intuition she attends The Black Widow's Ball dressed as Isis in the hope of meeting Lucien Blackmore, Earl of Blackmore. She wants to be employed by him in cataloguing his collection of egyptian art and antiquities.Constance has had vast experience in this area having worked with her husband prior to his death. She is aware that being a woman will not work in her favour so her application will most likely be rejected due to her gender.

On arriving at the ball however, she begins to regret her decision as this is no place for a widowed viscountess, and neither will her revealing outfitpersuade her prospective employer of her suitability for the position of 'Antiquities Cataloguer'. Concealed behind her mask, she flees to the safety of a room only to find herself in the arms of a stranger who believes she is the goddess Isis incarnate. They share passionate, consuming sex but Constance escapes without revealing her identity to her lover and without seeing the man she hoped would employ her.

Constance succeds in getting employed by cleverly avoiding to reveal her sex in her application and without signing her full name. When she arrives at Lyndham's Keep her boss is conveniently away so she has a few weeks to work before he becomes aware of her trickery. She hopes that her thorough work will persuade the earl to overlook her gender.Imagine her surprise when the Earl turns out to be none other than the man at the ball!He , in turn, is infuriated by her presence but cannot avoid the strong sexual attraction he feels for her.He recognises her as the woman he has been searching for since that fateful encounter, but there is a family curse that has been haunting the family for two generations. The males in the family murder the women they love and then they suicide. Can Lucien take a risk with the woman he loves to destraction? Can he trust her and believe that she communicates with the dead?

Well, itdefinitely kept meengrossed though I did find Lucien's mistrust of Constance frustrating and aggravating to the point where I would have loved to give him a slap across the face for being so short sighted and stubborn. Great read with a difference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love, love, LOVE this Author!
Constance Athelson, Viscountess Westbury has both an obsession and a secret. Her obsession is to be taken seriously as an Egyptian art cataloger and secure the open position to catalog the extensive and priceless collection of the Earl of Lyndham.Masked as the Egyptian goddess Isis Constance had heard the earl would be attending this evening's Black Widow masquerade ball otherwise, she never would be attending. Her secret was a visionary gift that allowed her to both see and communicate with spirits, including visions of upcoming events.

Lucien Blakemore, Earl of Lyndham couldn't believe his good fortune, or his intense reaction to the masked goddess that slipped into the room he was occupying. In a surreal moment it seemed as if destiny had delivered Isis into his arms, but the fervor of their passion was real until she fled into the night without him discovering who she was. Like a dying man in the desert he knew he could never love a woman but the sensual eroticism he'd experienced with this mysterious lady was something he longed to repeat.

*** Monica Burns has an extraordinary talent in writing sensual historical tales that will singe you from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Not only has she succeeded in making this story boil over with steamy and beautifully orchestrated sexual encounters, but she imparts a fabulous paranormal element and mystery with Constance's gift of visions and ability to communicate with ghosts.

Lucien is fleshed out as an arrogantly and masterful lover who believes that because of the Blakemore Curse, love is an impossible and dangerous dream. The frequency of physical sex as Lucien tries to believe his passion for Constance is lust rather than love gets increasingly intense and plays out perfectly along with mystery and ghostly encounters.

The fast pace, as the plot and mystery thickens surrounding thirty years of bloody murder and suicides, is supported and enhanced by a superb cast of secondary characters which culminated into a surprise ending this reviewer never saw coming.

Bottom line: This is a powerful sensually driven historical paranormal that is a testament to Ms. Burns gift of keeping her readers spell-bound.Highly Recommended Reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What the Doctor Ordered!
I teach students who struggle with math and have found the activities in this book to be just what they need. My students love the hands-on activities that have helped them develop a real understanding of theconcept of multiplication. The journal activities have expanded theircommunication skills, and they have learned to express their thoughtsbetter as a result of the prescribed instruction. They are more tuned intopatterns in math and think they're "cool!" They are amazed whenothers solve a problem using a different strategy than theirs. The"Circles and Stars" game is a favorite. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars !!!!----Beware Used Sellers Selling Older Editions--w/o CDs--!!!
I should have looked more closely.Great book but now I have to order the CDs from somewhere else.Don't let it happen to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Collection, folksy teaching commentary
This book has 75 tunes, arranged in Jethro Burns' special style, a jazzy and upbeat bluegrass. Not only does the CD play about 35 of the tunes, but there is always an interesting commentary/dialog between Jethro and Ken explaining the nuances of the tune, some special technique, or just a bit about themselves. They also demonstrate techniques, licks, chord exercises, and all sorts of interesting tricks, for example "Split-String Technique", "Flying Fingers Exercise", "Around the Horn Exercise", "Special Pull-String Technique".The book has 233 pages, but the CD and dialogue end on page 87.Listening to the CD is a must because there are so many nuances in the style that cannot be described by writing. For example, Jethro does a triplet grace note pull-off, and also adds a swing to most songs, with jazzy pickup strums on longer notes.I wish the CD could have covered more of the book, but I suspect it was limited to the original cassette tape length that was included in the first editions. In any case, the 75 tunes and 46 exercises can last you a lifetime.

Some hope for the pinkie challenged is that Jethro believes that you only need to use 3 finger chords, which leaves the pinkie free to do some special trick or just rest.He said he got some flack for it, but then it doesn't bother him.And listening to his music, you would not miss them.He does teach 4 finger standard chords in the advanced section of the book. But the chord charts at the end are all 3 finger, and you can pretty much cover the repretoire with those. It steps you from easier beginner/intermediate tunes and techniques to high positions, 4 note chord progressions, and all of the jazzy blues rhythm that you can handle.

There is so much packed in this book that you'll be using it for a very long time. The photos of Jethro, Homer, Ken and funny comics interspersed throughout the book add to its charm.I love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard To Read
Great content, but if you are slightly vision impaired as I am you may find the TTT (Teensy Tiny Tablature) very hard to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Want To Be Great On The Mandolin - Copy Jethro
For the uninformed Jethro Burns was half of the country comedy team Homer & Jethro. More importantly he was the most inovative mandolin player of our times. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Glorified Clip Art
This was a used acquisition.

It may be helpful to possess the images.

My desire was for something a little more substantive in its discussion of texture aesthetics.

What you get is 120 gray stock photos of objects with interesting textures.

Uninspiring, but a convenient resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing textures
There are a lot of great textures out there to be had, many of them even free, but I've never run across such a large and consistently amazing collection of them in one place before. Keep 'em coming, Von!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning
Just a joy to hold and thumb through. This is professional all the way through. The paper and illustrations are art book quality. As others have said this is not a how to book.It is an inspiration book - something to get you going. With your good knowledge of photoshop (which is not the topic of this book!)and some fresh inspiration you too can see things anew and start creating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
Yes, it is true that Von Glitschka does not explain how to use these textures. But that information can be had elsewhere. (Hint: Turn them into Alpha Channels and fill or knock out to your heart's delight. This is just one way. God bless Adobe. See Creative Photoshop, chapter seven by Derek Lea for further instruction.)

Also, Von Glitschka is incredibly generous on his blog. Thanks, dude!

Buy this book.
