Book Description

Actress and photographer Kris Carr thought she had a hangover, but a Jivamukti yoga class didn’t provide its usual kick-ass cure. A visit to her doctor confirmed her “liver looked like Swiss cheese,” covered with cancerous tumors. She entered trench warfare (wearing cowboy boots into the MRI machine, no less), vowing, “Cancer needed a makeover and I was just the gal to do it!” She began writing and filming her journey, documenting her interactions with friends, doctors, alternative “quacks,” blind dates, and other women with cancer—sadly a growing group. These include hip, young women such as illustrator-author Marisa Acocella Marchetto (Cancer Vixen), Glamour writer-editor Erin Zammett (My So-Called Normal Life), MTV personality Diem Brown (Real World/Road Rules Challenge), model Sharon Blynn (founder, Bald Is Beautiful), and music manager Jackie Farry, among others.
The Learning Channel broadcast the premiere of Carr’s unforgettable documentary, Crazy Sexy Cancer on August 29, 2007.

CRAZY SEXY CANCER TIPS gathers the lessons learned and advice offered from Carr’s own journey, as well as the experiences of her cancer posse. Full-color photos accompany personal stories and candid revelations in this scrapbook of advice, warnings, and resources for the cancer patient. Chapters cover your changing social life, dating, sex, and appearance; essential health tips on how to boost your immune system; recipes; medical and holistic resources; and information on young survivor support groups. The resulting book is a warm, yet informative tool for any woman newly diagnosed with the disease and for those who love them.

5-0 out of 5 stars My MIL's favorite book!
I bought this book for my MIL when she was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. This book had her laughing so much. She thanked me for the gift of good medicine, laughter. All of the contributors of this book touched parts of my mother in law that really related to how she felt in an uncanny and sarcastic way. This book also offers inspiration as well. Definitely not a boring book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
This fabulous book offers an enlightening and soul inspiring look into what people with cancer are going through. This is not just for people who have cancer, I'd recommend it to anyone searching for insight into what people are going through when they have any type of serious illness. It's honest, real, and empowering. This book is for everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Crazy Sexy Kris!
This is, hands down, the best cancer book you can buy. I not only bought this for myself, but I also have bought it and recommended it for everyone I know who has been affected by cancer. This book should (and did in my case) give many people hope. Unlike much of the initial reading I did on cancer, this made me laugh - a good laugh, the kind I needed, just like many need.

Kris is an inspiration to so many people and she will continue to be. I highly recommend anyone interested in this book to also check out her website and stay on the edge of their seats to catch her film (which I believe stopped showing in order to go to DVD) which is called Crazy Sexy Cancer. She has her own website using the same title as well as a blog on blogspot (same title).

Men also would enjoy this book, it's not just for ladies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Canser !!!!
LIFE CHANGING !! This book is not only for canser patients, you can just put your challenge in for the word canser. I put in Lupus and most of the book applied. Kris opens her heart and shares everything with you, mind, body, and spirit to help you heal completely ! She encourages you to become a crazy sexy cowgirl or chap and take charge of your life and health with 77 healing tips. For example, tip no. 3 Create A Sacred Space, Kris writes " It may sound like total tree-hugging hippie new-age crap, but it helps to have a corner of your home that feels sacred. " kris goes on to tell you about her alter made from a wooden bed tray. tip no. 16 Incurable Is Not A Declaration But A Dare ! tip no. 22 Create And Maintain A Medical Binder. Great info on how to put together your own or were to order. Then my favorite, all of chapter six, "Eat your veggies and shake your a**." This chapter is full of tips on diet, moving your body, cleansing your body and juicing those greens ! I am very new into this life style and already am seeing positive results in all areas ! not to mention i've lost 16 pounds ! Kris ends the book with alot of her favs, recipes, books, web sites, posse blogs ,I visit Kris's everyday to check in with all the crazysexy cowgirls and chaps, they are all inspiring, loving people, alot of young people, but also some older ones, such as myself ( fourty-something ) and Kris drops in often to offer help, support and guidance !

1-0 out of 5 stars Cancer is so UNSEXY
From a cancer survivor's perspective, the book's name is so inappropriate and a marketing ploy to get people to buy and from the "great" reviews here, it worked. Now, people who DON'T have cancer are going to believe that cancer is sexy. As a two-time cancer survivor, I could not relate to the book or its tips and NEVER felt sexy at one time.Maybe it was the two years of chemo and a stem cell transplant that did it.I also could not fly around the world and dance or shop like Kris.I had too many medical bills for that. Please understand that cancer should NOT be glorified. It's neither sexy, fun or easy. I know that Kris has a terminal cancer, but I am afraid she is sending the wrong message about cancer and is self-promoting. The great reviews seem to be by people who DON'T have cancer and who DON'T know how terrible this treatment can be, its harsh effects and the effects on families and loved ones. Kris Carr is sending the wrong message about cancer and in that respect, doing a lot of harm.If you are looking for a serious book, this book is not it.Kris makes cancer seem way too fun. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you have cancer, you MUST buy and read this book!
My name is Dr. Douglas Husbands ([...]) and I've been practicing holistic health care for about 2 decades. As a Certified Clinical Nutritionist, Chiropractor and Functional Medicine health practitioner, I have many patients who seek my help for multiple health problems including cancer.I always recommend that any patient who has cancer purchase, read and immediately begin to implement the recommendationsDr. Quillin makes in his book. This is THE most excellent, straightforward, easy to read self-help book with practical, scientifically-supported and valid information designed for anyone with cancer and no prior background in nutrition or health care.It should even be standard reading for many medical oncologists, which would result in many people's lives being saved!

I recently found out I have a relative with cancer who lives too far away from me to provide adequate care for. Besides referring them to a holistic health care colleague closer to where they live, I've advised them to immediately purchase, read and implement the advise outlined by Dr. Quillin in Beating Cancer With Nutrition. If you have cancer, or want to prevent it, buy this book and take the steps outlined NOW!

Lastly, I get no financial benefit from recommending this book, but I feel so strongly about this that I wholeheartedly urge anyone with cancerto benefit from the recommendations provided in the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Typical of American bad eating
The book was a big disappointment for me.It is a typical happy book about the awful way that Americans eat and encouraging more of the same..
Bad advise on diet and eating.

5-0 out of 5 stars beating cancer with nitrition
Good review of pre-1999 literature.Well written and easy to follow.Needs updating badly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful
This book felt like something written in the style of the 1890s.It doesn't address the need to eat whatever will stay down. There are so many points of view on nutrition but the bottom line is to eat what one can eat.

Book Description
From the National Book Award finalist, author of When Smoke Ran Like Water, a searing, haunting and deeply personal account of the War on Cancer.

The War on Cancer set out to find, treat, and cure a disease. Left untouched were many of the things known to cause cancer, including tobacco, the workplace, radiation, or the global environment. Proof of how the world in which we live and work affects whether we get cancer was either overlooked or suppressed.

This has been no accident.

The War on Cancer was run by leaders of industries that made cancer-causing products, and sometimes also profited from drugs and technologies for finding and treating the disease. Filled with compelling personalities and never-before-revealed information, The Secret History of the War on Cancer shows how we began fighting the wrong war, with the wrong weapons, against the wrong enemies--a legacy that persists to this day.

This is the gripping story of a major public health effort diverted and distorted for private gain.

A portion of the profits from this book will go to support research on cancer prevention. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money! Read Cancer Wars instead!
Instead of Davis's book, I recommend "Cancer Wars- How politics Shapes What We Know and Don't Know
About Cancer" by Stanford Professor, Robert Proctor.Proctor analyzes the different types of respose to
cancer. Davis's book is a classic illustration of left-wing, environmental causation beliefs.Proctor also
analyzed industry response to cancer which is trade association science, otherwise known as junk
science.Proctor notes that doubt is the desired end product for junk science. With significant public
doubt, policy and regulation can not go forward.
It seems to me that Davis's desired product is belief- belief in environmental causation of many cancers.
It is not likely that you will find a discussion of natural carcinogens in Davis's work.Proctor discusses
natural carcinogens in "Cancer Wars".Natural carcinogens occur in natural environment and are not caused by industry.Radon, a naturally occuring gas is a natural carcinogen.Lung cancer is a "life-style" cancer caused mainly by cigarette smoking.Viruses such as Human Papilloma Viruscause cancer.Molds (afloxins) cause cancer.Hepatitus C is associated with cervical cancer.Helicobacter pylori bacteria are associated with stomach cancer. Breast cancer was known as "The Nun's Disease" by Bernadino Ramazzini (1633-1714)
long before the current rise of breast cancer, most of which is attributed to "life-style". Too much sunlight causes cancer.
The New York Review of Books (March 6, 2008) has a long review of Davis's book by Richard Horton, M. D. He
is an editor at Lancet , the British medical journal and a professor at University College -London. He
discusses many of Davis's allegations and beliefs. He concludes with the following statements:

"But taken together, Davis's argument's are little more than a collection of vague exhortations to do some
thing based upon a distorted reading of the cancer literature. Her loose speculations weaken her
entirely reasonable claim that the war on cancer has been little more than an erraticskirmish......
.. she builds her arguments into towering yet brittle threats, out of all proportion to the real and more
robust dangers that face us every day."

Is one cancer more deserving or our compassion or regulation or funding than another?Does a woman
who develops cervical cancer because of multiple sexual partners who have infected her with Human
Papilloma virus deserve less of our concern than someone with an industry-linked cancer?

There are better and more informed sources that Devra Davis and her products.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Brave Book that Needs Wider Attention
Devra Davis has combined history, personal anecdote and experience, and deep scientific knowledge and research to provide readers with a sometimes chilling view of where we stand in the "war against cancer." She is not afraid to name names of both individuals and corporations who have too often put profit above people. The frightening thing as one reads this is how current the continuing coverups and dissembling are; this is not the story of past misdeeds alone.

There is a lot of information here that needs to be much more widely disseminated and discussed. As we look to a new administration in 2009, this book will be a good one for voters and policy makers alike to read and use for beginning new ways of approaching some of the environmental health issues Dr. Davis raises. As she points out over and over, we need not only to work for better treatments for cancer cases; we need to work to eliminate those carcinogenic factors we can control. As long as factions pit tobacco against pollution against other chemicals, always pointing the finger away from their own actions, the "war on cancer" will continue to be too weakly fought.

Dr. Davis has provided a great service, but I have given this only 4 stars due to the need to tighten the writing of the book. Her history lessons were superb, but too many chapters jumped from one subject to the next without cohesiveness; sometimes I found myself having to go back a couple of pages to review the thread of a topic that she suddenly brought back into her narrative. A little more editing and this would be a standout five star book.

Nonetheless, read the book, buy a copy or two and pass it on to all those you know who are in or outside the field of medicine, whose family members have already been touched by cancer or, as is more and more likely, will be in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Miss!
What Ms Davis speaks of in this book comes as no surprise to me. As a PharmD who has two parents who are Physicians I have known this info all along. It is so important for everyone to read so we can try to change the way the "War on Cancer" is being fought. Yes, it would affect my job as an Pharmacist but I see the pain and suffering in my patient's and their family's eyes every day. Devra uncovers why these families are still suffering after all these years and it all starts with the mighty $.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opening, well-researched book
As a young person and as a scientist, I was incredibly impressed by Davis' book. It makes two important claims - that environmental sources of cancer dominate genetic causes, and that we as a nation have embraced diagnosis and treatment and ignored prevention in our war on cancer. The book is a thrilling read, written like a mystery novel, that weaves science and history together into a comprehensive tale. Because of this book, I am more aware of what I eat, what I breathe, and where I live. I recommend Davis' book to any person who is interested in how to prevent cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The war on cancer is like the war on science
The purpose of this book was not to document how many people have died of cancer or any other ailment. This book shows that even when epidemiology and animal studies clearly demonstrated the carcinogenic properties of various chemicals that in many cases this data was conveniently forgotten (at best) and actively buried (at worst).Mr. Kaufman says that the war on cancer has always been about finding ways to treat cancer.Perhaps, but anyone who has watched someone suffer from cancer (and who hasn't) would likely agree that preventing cancer would be a much better way to fight cancer than to solely focus on treatment.

Why isn't prevention the focus of the war on cancer? The short version is because industry and government are working together to make sure the money keeps rolling in at the expense of everyone else.Davis cites examples of doctors and others who smoked and were in denial for decades about the fact that cigarette smoking causes cancer. Why?Because they either worked in the industry (and made money) or they simply didn't want to believe it.Just because you don't want to believe something doesn't negate overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

This book shows how industry and government buried information or failed to act to prevent thousands of cancer deaths. What is even more frightening is that this is still occurring.Very few chemicals are tested by EPA before being approved for the market.Phthalates and BPA are in numerous products that we all use every day.Not only are these chemicals possible carcinogens, but as is becoming increasingly observed in both animal studies and also in humans, they disrupt hormone signaling. This is particularly disturbing in developing male fetuses inwhich they can have feminizing effects that can result in male deformities and eventual reproductive difficulties. The government wants iron-clad proof before banning these chemicals, but I believe that in the face of current data, reasonable doubt should be the criterion used.As Davis' book makes clear, government will not act unless it is financially advantageous to do so.As products containing banned (in the EU) chemicals continue to be sold in the US, we and our children are becoming the guinea pigs in one of the largest chemical experiments ever conducted. The more the government censors scientists, alters reports and refuses to believe ever-increasing scientific data on the dangers of chemicals we slather on our skin every day (among other things) the less safe we will be and we can expect the cancer rate to continue to increase. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bio of cancer
This was a good purchase. It was shipped on time and in the right condition. The book itself is good.

5-0 out of 5 stars great diagrams, interesting history
This book takes the complicated history of cancer and cancer discovery and transforms these topics into easy-to-read chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars great intro textbook
We adopted this text as soon as it was available for a senior level college course on Cancer Biology. The text is appropriate for those with a good basis in biology but does not presuppose additional knowledge of cancer. The focus is biased somewhat towards signal transduction and oncogenes. This is great in the course we run as we focus on the molecular basis of cancer.

There are a large number of pathology figures that are not always well integrated with the text, but could serve well in a more medically focused course. There are a few significant omissions that I expect will be filled in future revisions of the book.

Despite these minor criticisms, this is the best textbook I have found for a senior college level or early graduate level cancer biology course. It is well written, nicely illustrated and remarkably comprehensive for a first edition. The poster that accompanies it is a handy reference for basic cell signaling and is a staple on the walls of many labs.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the view of a senior chemistry major
This book is a good book for anyone who is new to the cancer field; provided you have taken cell biology, maybe with a year of biochemistry.Having taken those classes myself, this book was still a bit much concerning the amount of information in it.This book can become complex at times, but cancer is no easy subject. This book comes with a CD with videos, mp3 lectures, power point slides, and a poster outlining some of the pathways of cancer formation.I really enjoyed the amount of supporting evidence and references that author gave for anyone interested in a particular sub topic within the chapters. Also the "cartoon" drawings that are common in biochem or biology books (protein structure, etc) are accompanied with a lot of "experimental" pictures such as those from an electron micrograph.I recommend this book for anyone in the biology, biochem, or chem fields that are interested in the cancer field.Oh and I'm not taking a class with this book (I wish said class was offered), I purchased it on my own to see if this is something I'd want to do in graduate school.

5-0 out of 5 stars a comprehensive introduction to cancer
The Biology of Cancer is a timely book on a subject which by its very nature attracts the attention of scientists from many different fields. It manages to gather all the relevant information in a learned yet accessible and very well illustrated text. The book is thus very useful to scientists who are considering cancer as an area of research, to medics and pathologists as a means to better understand molecular oncology and to all of those who only wish to be better informed about this vast area. It is a must buy in every laboratory whether directly or marginally involved in cancer.I hope that it finds a long lasting niche in the cancer literature and that along the years it gets to be periodically revised and updated. ... Great book, lots of self-help advice for overall well-being, not just cancer. The included websites allow further research (so many I don't think I'll ever get through them all) on excellent sites. This book has greatly increased my understanding of cancer and the resources we can all use to combat this and many other diseases.A wonderful addition to any Wellness Library.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is no more important book to read on this planet other than the Bible
Given 1 out of every 2 men, and 1 out of every 3 women, in the U.S. will get a cancer diagnosis in their lifetimes, this book is a must read for every one of us.If we don't have cancer, we know 10 or more people who have it or have died from it. I was stage 3 almost 6 years ago, and refused all conventional treatment other than the initial operation. Bill's first book caught my eye midway through my struggle to beat down the metastaces (so far, successfully). He offers a compendium of solutions, some of which I had become aware of through other books, and some entirely new. This second book offers even more insight on the causes of cancer, and the logic that vastly changed lefestyle, mainly diet, is the path to remission. I have corresponded with Bill numerous times and he is a very compassionate and sensible person.I believe if we wanted to reduce medical costs for cancer in this country, we should direct all cancer patients to this book and close all cancer centers. The death rate would decrease, and far fewer people would spend their remaining months after chemo and radiation in total misery.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a treasure!!!Buy this book ASAP!!!
For anyone battling Cancer, you need to become informed. As Bill points out, you need to become smarter than your Oncologist, and believe me, after reading this book, you will be.What Bill so convincingly illustrates is that Oncologists all have horse blinders on with their primary goal to "poison, cut, or burn" cancer patients by peddling money-making drugs or procedures without understanding the human body and how it works (or outright disregarding how it works), and, ignoring simpler, gentler, more economical procedures that he so convincingly reports will help the cancer patient.

There is no better way to educate yourself on the topic of cancer than this book.I started doing research on Cancer when a family member was diagnosed and was always trying to find sources I could trust. This book takes care of all that. It has all the trustworthy links, websites, books,... you could ever imagine finding. In fact if there is one bad thing about this book, it is that it presents so much useful information that you feel overwhelmed in your effort to absorb it all, seek it out, and do your own additional research as he suggests. Additionally, with the purchase of this book you can subscribe to his newsletter for FREE, which serves to update you on changes since this edition was published.

What are you waiting for, order it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cancer-Free by Bill Henderson, (Second Edition)
If you want to know anything about ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS FOR CANCER, Bill Henderson has done all the work for you.He has read, studied and in many cases interviewed the authors of every gentle, non-toxic treatment method that has been proposed over the last half century. He writes for the layman in an easy to read and understand style and he is not afraid to give you his honest opinion about the various methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive list of all alternative and orthodox treatments for cancer
Having been recently diagnosed with colon cancer (removed by operation) and liver cancer (secondary) I needed to know some answers regarding future treatments. Having heard and seen the results of the 'orthodox' route I wanted none of that! This book informed me of all of the alternatives on offer and covered each protocol very thoroughly. I highly recommend this book to every cancer sufferer. You will not be disappointed. Incidentally I chose the Budwig route.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful read
I found this book to be very insightful and I took alot of the information and worked it into my life.It shows a lot of ways to improve our health on a daily basis that could make an impact on our future health.Great book for anyone who has a loved one with cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastico!
I am an 18-year LIVER, not "survivor," of a diagnosis of low-grade, Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I have lived 8-10 years LONGER than the "average" person lives with such a diagnosis. I have done that by doing as much alternative treatment---diet, psychology, exercise, supplementation, etc---as possible, and by using mainstream medicine as little as possible.

That said, I will say, about this book, that in my 18 years of researching cancer treatments, this is one of the best, if not THE BEST, books on cancer I have ever had the pleasure to read. It is concise and easy to understand. It is encouraging---it gives the reader real hope. And it is for BOTH those diagnosed with cancer, and for those who have not yet been diagnosed with cancer. I say "not yet diagnosed with cancer" because the statistics, in the United States, at least, say that ONE out of every TWO men will be diagnosed with cancer, and TWO out of every THREE women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in his or her life. So if you do not yet have cancer, get busy and read this book! If you do have a diagnosis of cancer, get busy and read this book! It is literally a LIFE-SAVER! Even if you were to spend $40 dollars on this book, that is less than you would spend on one visit to an oncologist, and this book will give you 4,000 times MORE GOOD INFORMATION on how to prevent or how to heal from cancer than an oncologist EVER will!

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Fight Cancer & Win -- Saving Lives
The book was purchased for a friend undergoing radiation for lymphnoma cancer in chest (following lung cancer surgery and chemo). She was not very excited that I brought home a book. Eventually, she opened the book and begin to read.

The book has facts about cancer that she had never been told by her doctors. The natural resources, like wheatgrass, for healthy nutrition has made an enormous change in her body and how she has been able to handle the radiation. The doctor keeps asking her, "Are you sure you don't hurt?" Her answer is "No, I feel fine".

3-0 out of 5 stars Adding to the list of books....
I'm somewhat disappointed in the content. The best anti-cancer approach is to eat foods that alkalinize the body. The blood pH must be 7.35 - 7.5 to actually beat cancer, depending on the type of cancer and the stage of cancer. Max Gerson's plan leads you to beat whatever disease you have, not just cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information!
I first found this book at the library and liked it so much that I brought 2, one for a friend. It is one of the best books on diet and cancer I have read!!It is very helpful, especially if you are getting chemotherapy or radiation, because it tells how to deal with the side effects.

5-0 out of 5 stars What to Eat If you Have Cancer
This is a book that I would have liked to have known about whn I started undergoing treatment for Breast cancer.Have been going through Chemo treatments since September of 2005.Has been hard to find just what I should be eating to keep my energy level up and keep me going. This is a great book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Repetitious
I have two other books that echo much of the information in this book, so I found the entire book rather repetitious, and the other books I have are much better, more organized and more entertaining.

4-0 out of 5 stars Please add selenium as discussed below
The cancer-fighting nutrient most proven to date is selenium. A daily supplement of 200 microgram of selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to cut the death rate from cancer in half.

Specifically, a large group of people who were given each day a yeast tablet enriched with 200 micrograms (mcg) of selenium had only half the number of deaths from cancer over a seven year period as a similarly large control group who were given a daily yeast tablet containing no selenium. Yeast tablets enriched with 200 mcg of selenium are readily available at pharmacies as well as health stores across the U.S. for about $5 or so for a bottle of 50 to 100 tablets -- only 10 cents or less per day -- I do.

The results of this dramatic study were published in the medical profession's own journal: The Journal of the American Medical Association. Nevertheless, most doctors pay no attention to the results. Think about that, selenium (at 10 cents per day or less) has been shown in a large clinical study to cut the death rate from cancer in half and nobody tells the public about it. Incredible! In my opinion, as a research chemist, everybody in the U.S. should take supplemental selenium every day.

Other nutrients which help prevent cancer include vitamin C, vitamin E, CoQ10, and lycopene. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped my father
My father had surgery for stomach cancer in December 2006. Since he's 87 years old, he decided not to have radiation or chemotherapy. He wanted to try an alternative treatment so I gave him this book. It mentions a flaxseed oil and cottage cheese mixture that my father eats twice a day, in addition to his regular meals. He went from 149 lbs to 165 lbs. He seems to be doing well. His cat scan showed the cancer hasn't spread. Thanks for writing this book Ms. Pierce!

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down
I have seen other books about cancer but this book explained the processes without technical jargon. It was easy to follow, easy to read and easy to understand.I bought another 20 copies to give my friends and families for Christmas.I think it is a topic we should all be informed about!I feel empowered for having read it and am not afraid of the word cancer anymore.I now know there are many strategies for getting rid of it.This book is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gave to a friend
I sent this book to a friend of mine who has ovarian cancer. She has had bad luck with chemo and all the other mainstream pharmaceuticals that doctors have been prescribing. She said the book was very interesting and she was going to try some of the stuff in the book. Unfortunately she does not have the money to allow her to own a computer or internet access, so I try to help her out when I can. I chose this book for her because I actually read all of the reviews first before purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book could save your Life
I can truly recommend this book to anyone, not just people who have cancer. Not only is it a very interesting read but his book is a real eye opener into the world of traditional and alternative cancer treatments. We no longer have to accept western medicine's limitations and toxic cancer treatments that do more harm than good but we can take our health into our own hands starting with the information in this book. After reading the book and consequently researching further some of the information contained within it I stopped chemotherapy and went on to one of the non-toxic alternatives outlined in the book and so far am cancer free. I am so convinced that the information in this book can save many lives I regularly buy copies to give out to people I know with cancer because for them it may mean the difference between life an death.

5-0 out of 5 stars If nothing else, you learn a heck of a lot about cancer
Most people who read this book either have cancer or know someone with it. If they're reading this book they must already have some idea that the conventional treatments (slash, burn and poison) have limited success and significant risk of doing more harm than good.

Ms. Pierce is especially good at explaining how statistics are skewed to make products look good when they are backed by "Big Pharma". Patients are apparently told to take a toxic chemical because of a good "tumor response rate", when the truth is that you often cannot kill all the cancer cells before you kill too many normal cells. Then the ones that survive live to another day and because they are a special breed with resistance to the chemo, they multiply and come back stronger than ever. I have seen this myself in a friend who went through several chemo treatments and then died. I also know a few people who were successfully cured of cancer by chemotherapy, however they were all young people suffering from either Hodgkins or testicular cancer (like Lance Armstrong). These cancers are likely curable because they affect mostly the young and the young are better able to live through the poisoning effect. I have often thought that there must be less dangerous cures for older, less vigorous people, although slower. Well, here they are in this book.

Contrary to what some may think, Ms. Pierce doesn't completely reject the conventional treatments, as they might be useful in situations where the slow method can't work because of the fast progression of the disease. However she gives useful information and questions to ask the doctor so that a patient may determine if this is necessary and also may determine if they are being put through misery for nothing because the chemo may not really have much chance of helping. It is useful to know that rejecting a horrible treatment is more valid than one might be led to believe when talking to physicians may be more interested in protecting their behinds from liability than quality of life. They may tell you that something is better than nothing and that something needs to be backed by Big Pharma.

The alternative treatments discussed are certainly not "snake oil". Every treatment she chose to cover is based on research which identifies differences between cancer cells and normal cells. The products exploit this difference to make cancer cells self-destruct. I immediately identified some of the research as corroborating with articles I have read over the years in the science sections of mainstream newspapers, such as the Wall Street Journal.

Will they cure you? She always says that there are no claims that any of the treatments will cure everybody. What they do claim is that the cure rates are better than those of conventional chemotherapies, once you account for the misleading nature of chemotherapy "cure" rates. The alternative treatments claim that when you're cured you are actually cancer free, whereas the chemotherapy cure rates count anyone who is still alive five years after diagnosis, even if they still have cancer and are about to die five years and two days after diagnosis. Why is this convincing? Well, if you believe that big business will skew statistics in order to recover a big development investment and make profits, then you have to think about this. It's true that nobody is interested in spending hundreds of millions on trials of a substance which is so readily available that they can't sell it exclusively. Until medical care is provided on a non-profit basis I don't believe we will seek out effective, inexpensive treatments which can be self-administered instead of controlled by expensive physicians.

I also found this book to be a very easy read, despite the technical nature of her discussions. She is clear and often offers analogies which get at the meat of the concept. I give it an A+!

Living where "cancer" is an everyday word has made me perhaps a bit sensitive when I hear it in the real world and how it is being used.I was pleasantly surprised by this book as not just another soother. It actually touches reality.Makes cancer real and beatable. It makes you realize you're not alone, that there are resources out there as well as information available if you take the time to read it.This book has a great summary of everthing and I recommend it to my newly diagnosed patients. We need more realistic books about cancer, not just ones that gloss over it.

Thank you to Greg Anderson.Well done.

No punches are pulled in Henry Miller's most famous work. Still pretty rough going for even our jaded sensibilities, but Tropic of Cancer is an unforgettable novel of self-confession. Maybe the most honest book ever written, this autobiographical fiction about Miller's life as an expatriate American in Paris was deemed obscene and banned from publication in this country for years. When you read this, you see immediately how much modern writers owe Miller.Book Description

Now hailed as an American classic, Tropic of Cancer, Henry Miller's masterpiece, was banned as obscene in this country for 27 years after its publication in Paris in 1934. Only a historic court ruling that changed American cesorship standards permitted the publication of this first volume of Miller's famed mixture of memoir and fiction, which chronicles with unapologetic gusto the bawdy adventures of a young expatriate writer, his friends, and the characters they meet in Paris in the 1930s.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Necessary Evil...
I'm not going to debate the literary merits of Henry Miller's book, hailed by some as one of the greatest books of the twentieth century. I'll make a few points.

1.Tropic of Cancer is a semi-autographical book about a man in Paris in the early 1930s, an American ex-pat writer, living on the edge of subsistence, detailing his adventures among the French, sexual exploits, nights of drunken revery, etc...

2.Miller creates vivid, seedy imagery. Certain passages will leave you wanting to take a shower. A compliment to the power of his writing? I don't know-Rob Zombie movies can have the same effect.

3.For the most part, the characters are unheroic, amoral, living directionless, shallow lives. (Somewhat semi-autobiographical, being Miller fled France before the second world war, hiding out in California for the rest of his life.)

3.The writing can be self-indulgent: " The town was a shambles, corpses mangled by butchers and stripped by plunderers, lay thick in the streets; wolves sneaked in from the suburbs to eat them; the black plague and other deaths crept in to keep them company, and the English came marching on."
This type of writing goes on for pages and pages at a time.

4.At about page 120, the book becomes less indulgent and more coherent. (The change was so drastic i thought I was reading a different book.) Most probably throw the book down at about page 80, but you need to trudge on to the end to honestly say you've read the book.

5.I think most who rave about Miller haven't really read Miller:they'll display his books, or read certain passages while consuming alcohol, or learn some of his pithy one-liners, but to read one of his novels cover to cover obviously requires mental rigor. (I'd like to see even one of these litery critics write "Displayed sparks of literary genius, butcould have used an editor!"

6.Miller is a necessary evil. Every student of literature should probably be familiar with his writing.I respect him for having the cajones to write like this over 60 years ago. Will people still be reading Miller 100 years from now? The verdict is still out.

5-0 out of 5 stars don't go crazy
i was working in a half-way house for the chronically mentally ill and was reading this during down time. a really manic resident snatched it out of my hand in the crowded kitchen one day and began to read it outloud. quickly all the schizophrenics and manics looked at me like i was really nuts. that alone should stand as an endorsement.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem.
A great book even after all these years. Henry Miller was a master of what he wrote. I wish I had met him!

5-0 out of 5 stars A live saver for troubled adolscents (a least this one...)
...my spiritual liberation started with Henry Miller and _Tropic of Cancer_.
I always credit him with "saving my life" and don't think this an exaggeration. As a troubled, near suicidal 15 year old, I saw _Tropic of Cancer_on the bookshelf of my next door neighbor's - whose dog I was walking while they were away - and dove in hoping to find what reports of the obscenity trial in the New York Times would lead me to find - I was 15 and anxious for "obscenity".
No doubt, I found obscenity, but mostly I found courage! gobs of it - and joy - the courage to be who I was and just go for it - everything and everyone else be damned!
For the next decade or so, not two weeks would go buy when I wasn't reading Miller: the Topics, Black Spring, Sexus/Nexus/Plexus, The Colossus of Maroussi, Big Sur, and on and on, re-reading - but although they all recharged the joy (not to mention my vocabulary, he read the dictionary as a youth and remembered everything), nothing matched the impact of _Tropic of Cancer_.
Yes - Miller's pretentious, narcissistic and misogynistic, but he's also filled with a contagious spirit. His later works - particularly _Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch_ are more focused on true spirituality.By his late 50's he finally got the sexual obsession and misogyny under control, the earlier works are too focused on lust.
Great stuff for a 15 year old boy though! - wonderful and graphic sex scenes are interspersed with lyricism, erudition and the great joy of being alive ...no matter what...

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to any 15 year old or 50 year old...

3-0 out of 5 stars a tale of travels
I have to admit part of what attracted me to the book and held my attention was keeping in mind the time period it was written in. I was a bit shocked even by today's standards and I can see why it was banned for many years. Just for having the balls to write a book of that brashness in that time period; it is worth checking out.

When it comes to storyline, I was less interested in his large lessons on life he was trying to teach than the story itself. I choose to read it simply as a tale of a traveler and glossed over the muddy insights. In my opinion they didn't seem to have a place.

I have a friend who has hitch-hiked across America, and at times hopped freight trains to travel. Needless to say she's had some unusual experiences. When reading this I thought of her and her stories. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great food ideas
I oftentimes recommend this book to my patients that are at a loss for what they need/should be eating during treatment. It takes a lot of the guess work out of what to cook.A great gift for friends and family members who don't know what else to do when a loved one is diagnosed, buy this book and prepare a healthy meal.

Extensive cancer treatments can be devastating to the entire system, so eating healthy foods can help to combat even the worst of chemical side effects.

Well-written, easy to read, and chock full of info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for both patient and caregiver
I received this book as a gift a number of years ago when my husband was fighting cancer. Like all cancer patients he had little appetite and lots of side effects from his chemo. The recipes are great to help with the various problems encountered by cancer patients at any time during the treatment. I also found the section for caregivers to be really helpful for myself. Not only is nutrition important for the patient but the caregiver also and this book provided great food and good tips also. Now, I give this book as a gift to those I know how are dealing with cancer themselves or a loved ont.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book concerns me
This book has numerous tasty recipes that everyone in the family can enjoy. The book is also nicely organized with a chart that summarizes which recipes are particularly good for specific side efects of cancer & cancer treatment.

On the negative side, and this was a big negative for me personally, if you are trying to follow an anti-cancer diet that avoids sugar, processed flours, and other ingredients that many believe are at least questionable if not outright harmful for a cancer patient, then this is not the book for you. Many of these recipes include the use of table sugar & other processed sweeteners, processed grains, and higher amounts of animal protein than are usually recommended for cancer patients (or for anyone, for that matter). The author even recommends adding extra sugar to some recipes to make them taste better.

I understand firsthand that some, perhaps many, cancer patients' palates change during treatment. When combined with nausea or other side effects, it can be difficult to find any foods that are appealing. At times, simply getting the patient to eat *anything* in order to get some calories must take precedence over ensuring that those meals are truly healthy. If this is the situation you are facing, then this book might provide you with some tasty options. But I believe it is irresponsible for the author to provide recipes and food suggestions that at best are not truly healthy and at worst could feed a patient's cancer.

Instead I recommend "Nature's Cancer-Fighting Foods" as a source of sound nutritional advice (for anyone, not just cancer patients) and simple, health-promoting, and appealing recipes.

Book Description
If you're concerned about the "C" word, then the first thing you need to know is that cancer does NOT have to be a death sentence! There is hope! There are many potent and well-proven alternative strategies for preventing, treating, and even curing cancer... without surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation (i.e. the "Big 3").Inside this book, you will find a wealth of information that your doctor probably doesn't know. Here's why: while at medical school, doctors not only receive biased information but also learn a very drug-intensive style of medicine. As a result, most doctors are still thinking "inside the box" when it comes to cancer. The "cancer box" is largely the creation of multinational pharmaceutical companies attempting to peddle their poisons (such as chemotherapy) in an effort to increase shareholder profits.Sadly, these profits are generated at the expense of cancer patients. Cancer - Step Outside the Box succinctly explains the facts and deceptions about cancer and cancer treatments, it documents multiple cases of persecution and suppression of effective cancer treatments, it details the most potent of the Stage IV and Stage III cancer treatment protocols, and it clearly explains the relationship between nutrition and cancer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great BOOK
"Step outside the box" is a great foundation for anyone who is attempting to educate themselves on CANCER.

There are many books out there, and everyone has a view point. But our family found this to be a great book to start with.

For anyone sick, read with an open heart, and be thankful there is information out there and the truth is available to find. Bitterness will only work with your sickness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book before you get cancer
Although I have been outside the box regarding mainstream medical care all my life (I don't ever recall being given an antibiotic as a child, and I only ever gave one of my children an antibiotic except for the dentist, who did give them a couple of times), and although I have successfully helped myself and my family through small health problems with great success by each time finding natural remedies, the nature of a cancer diagnosis is to throw a person into a state of panic. And at that moment, who will be standing by with great skill and experience to guide you right into their traps but your mainstream medical practitioner? To be sure, I have been vaguely aware of alternative cancer cures and clinics, but I just didn't know much about it. Panic and ignorance would not be a good combination when important decisions need to be made!

I don't have cancer, nor anyone I know right now, but I am a nurse and I have recently begun to work around a lot of cancer patients. I can certainly attest to the way that cancer patients keep coming back, the remissions don't seem to last, and there are hideous complications from chemo and radiation. Some of the surgeries are pretty ghastly, too. Both chemo and radiation frequently cause new cancers to arise, often years later. How can we be so foolish as to call something a treatment that causes the exact disease it is supposed to cure? I don't think many people know about this, but again, as a nurse I have seen it. Radiation and chemo are highly toxic, and are carcinogenic! Ty Bollinger and the cancertutor guy are not making this up.

The sad truth is that our entire system, the medical-industrial complex, is not geared to help people live healthy lives, and those who are not willing to do some self learning are just at a great disadvantage. I wish it weren't so, but it is. Because of my job I realized I needed to know more about how to really deal with cancer, and I began searching the net and found some great websites, especially cancertutor.com. Basically, I think this book and cancertutor are equal, although cancertutor actually is much bigger and has even more info. But there's nothing like a book.
My fear of cancer has decreased because of the information in this book. I feel ready to deal with it, or able to encourage someone else and point them in the right direction - and not only that but many of the cancer cures are also preventives so you can begin implementing them now and make them part of your life. Also, many good tips for removing causes from your lifestyle.

The book is quite thorough, including many different possible causes and etiologies of cancer, and has everything you need to get started with alternative treatments, as well as how to do better while receiving regular treatments if you so desire. Just having a vague notion of using natural methods will not be enough if you actually get cancer - you'll need an action plan and part of that plan is knowing why one treatment is better than another for your particular case. It is so easy to get discouraged if you hear of someone who tried natural treatments and didn't make it. This book (and cancertutor) goes into great detail about how and why to choose different treatments based on the severity of your disease, and gives instructions, links, phone numbers. It is a very easy read while containing a huge wealth of new information.

The only area that is a bit weak is the role that hormones play in women's cancers, and the role of artificial hormones. For that, you can't do better than Dr. John Lee's books, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer/Menopause. Every woman should read these books.

I hope books like this and the internet will finally cause a medical revolution in this country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cancer Step Outside The Box
This is a most amazing book, the most truthful and eye opening book I have ever read. This book is very well written, researched, astounding, honest and very informative. For Ty to write a book like this and give the formulas, telephone numbers and e-mails for more info or to confirm all that is written proves Ty has a great heart and is totally honest. This book will help many, many people and give them hope. He should be on the many talk shows or even 60 minuets. I don't think they would have the guts to put Ty on prime time, it would be great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
This book was just amazing.I loved the way Ty actually tells you the different approaches to treatments. His book is just straight on, no hidden agendas. A desperate person spending many years of his life trying to see through all the lies about why so many people he loved died from this terrible disease. Thankfully to him willing to share all of his valuable knowledge with us. This book has so much information he names many doctors, clinics & web links where all the different treatments can be sought. He speaks on diet, the BAD foods that cause disease also how to prevent disease with different vitamins, minerals supplements. He describes different treatments for various stages of cancer and how to prevent 2 very common types. It is by far the best book in my library. THIS IS A MUST READ BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars REAL HOPE AND HEALTH FOR CANCER-FIGHTERS!!
Before purchasing them, a friend loaned me "A Cancer Battle Plan" and the follow-up "Sourcebook" and my health has been forever altered! I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Breast Cancer in the summer and after thoroughly investigating what oncology had to offer (further assault on my immune system and an almost certain expectation of MORE cancer in the future, I opted for the NATURAL AND VERY SUCCESSFUL treatment plan of detoxifying my system and altering my lifestyle to prevent further damage. I AM CANCER FREE without chemo or radiation --- and I'm healthy and more vital than ever!
I have been working directly with Health Quarters Ministries in Colorado Springs as well as local nutritionists and my health-promoting-chiropractor. I am more certain than ever: this is the way to go!! You're guaranteed better health!!

I now understand WHY organic foods are essential (pesticides on our fruits and vegetables react in the body like hormones, and breast cancer [as well as prostate and some others] is a hormone-receptor cancer. I UNDERSTAND the dangers we have allowed into our lives and I'm WILLING to exchange health for convenience --- our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made to fight [all] diseases if we give it the right tools (nutrition) to be healthy!

BEFORE YOU CONSIDER TRADITIONAL [failing] MEDICINE --- GIVE THIS PROGRAM A "COLLEGE TRY" --- YOU WON'T EVER BE SORRY YOU DID!!!!

I strongly believe "ALTERNATIVE" therapies should be employed FIRST --- not after Western Medicine has failed (and it doubtless will and historically has ... )!

There is no "MONEY" in natural cures --- that's why they are not promoted on TV or by the medical field. "Follow the Money" if you want to be disillusioned and disappointed by all that so-called modern medicine has to offer. (More often leading to an awful quality of life and ultimately a terrible death ... DON'T DO IT!)

5-0 out of 5 stars inspiring
I love this book! It is the best natural approach to cancer I have read. It gives the details you need to recover with diet, and she doesn't try to sell you anything, you can do it all with a juicer. There were two other books I had read that talk about the protein connection to cancer, The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health and Cancer: Curing the Incurable Without Surgery, Chemotherapy, or Radiation, but this one is by far the best. I would, and do recommend it to anyone I know with cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CancerBattle Plan
This is an excellent book for both cancer victims and their families. Not only does is provide hope to the hopeless, it offers advice on how to support the cancer victim and thier family. It provides some insight into alternative treatment for cancer. It is not intented to give specific protocols or treatment plans. It does however provide resources to help explore the options and offers some idea of what to expect.I recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another hopeless case helped
I, too, was a hopeless case.Diagnosed with breast cancer to the liver almost two years ago.I was told I would live 6 month with no treatment and might extend my life two years with treatment but that the cancer would never go away.A friend suggested this book and it gave me hope. I looked for all the areas I could find hope and believe me anyone diagnosed with a terminal disease needs hope. I did not follow everything in the book but I was able to see that diet and the immune system was going to be an intergral part of my cure.I wouldn't say it holds all the answers, but I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a diagnosis of cancer. She simply shared what she did and how she did it. I did it a little differently, but I have had two normal liver scans. I did do conventional therapy as well as natural therapy and diet, concentrating on building up the immune system. Just remember, your doctor does not have the last word on whether you survive - he makes a diagnosis but you do not have to accept his prognosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars I would rate this book a "10" if I could
This book is worth its weight in gold.Anyone who has been diagnosed with any form of cancer should read this book PRIOR to accepting treatment in the medical world. With the proper cooperation between medical doctors and naturopathy, many people could be healed without enduring the hardship of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.Who wouldn't want to avoid that if they could?I have purchased so many copies of this book and handed them out because I believe in what it says, and I know it to be true. ...
