Book Description
The 2002 edition of this very popular book has a beautiful new cover and both new and revised up-to-date information for all people diagnosed with cancer. The author is a Registered Dietitian who is also a 3-time cancer survivor (a childhood cancer, neuroblastoma, and breast cancer in 1984 and then1995). In her book, she shares both information and inspiration from her personal cancer recovery journey after her most recent diagnosis in 1995, in which she combined conventional cancer therapy with nutritional changes and many complementary medicine therapies. ... This book is wonderful. If you have received that dreaded diagnosis, your doctor is not going to give you as much advice as Diana Dyer does. This book tells you how to improve your diet to maximize your chance of surviving. If you are still healthy, try to stay that way by following her guidelines. I was struck by how far ahead of her time Diana Dyer was. She was making changes (some controversial) way before the research showed she was doing the right thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Excellent "Book on Nutrition &Cancer
WOW!! This impressive book is for the person who desires to "optimize" their own health. Diana, a Registered Dietitian, and survivor of THREE episodes of cancer herself, discusses the on-going and evolving state of nutrition research and how she uses that information to determine her own "optimal diet" to treat/prevent cancer recurrence. She discloses how she has implemented good nutrition and complementary therapies into her everyday life. She shares her own recipes, serving sizes, sample menus, tips for eating 9+ servings of fruits and vegetables, recipe book sources, her own personal grocery list, dining-out tips, and newsletter, book & internet resource listings. Don't pass up this great help-yourself book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is so helpful that I volunteered to translate it!
When I started reading A Dietitian's Cancer Story, I found it so interesting, well written, and practical that I could not stop until I had finished. Then I thought, what a wonderful information resource from which many people around the world could benefit. It has been a pleasure for me to translate A Dietitian's Cancer Story into Spanish (Historia De Cancer De Una Dietista) which is also now available on Amazon.com.I admire Diana Dyer as a nutrition professional and also as a patient who has gone through a lot to be where she is now: helping many people. The field of cancer and nutrition has been enriched with the book A Dietitian's Cancer Story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diana Dyer is a Good Teacher
This would be a very helpful book for anyone who wants to improve her or his nutrition, regardless of whether they have cancer or not. The author starts out by teaching the reader how to have a well balanced diet -information everyone needs to know. One of the things I like best about thebook is that she acknowledges that research on nutrition and cancer isincomplete, but then goes on to discuss how to include foods that have beenshown to be possibly helpful in preventing cancer. The book is packed withuseful information and helpful hints to make the dietary changes easier andmore enjoyable. Reviewed by Patricia J. Book Description
Hearing that you have prostate cancer, or even that you may have it, is very scary. But this disease, in many cases, is curable. Even if you have advanced cancer that's spread beyond the prostate, many treatments help extend your life for years. You need good information to help you with the decisions that lie ahead, and this book provides you with this information.

Prostate Cancer For Dummies can help you if

  • You have prostate cancer (or you think that you have it), or someone close to you has it.
  • You want information on treatments for prostate cancer as you form a treatment plan with your doctor.
  • You are curious about alternative therapies for prostate cancer.
  • You want to know what actions you can take over the long-term to continue to fight your prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer For Dummies explains the key issues and problems that are associated with prostate cancer, and assures you that although the initial impact of being diagnosed is devastating, you can take action to extend your life.

You don't have to read this book from the first page straight on through, although you can. You may want to read the first chapter and then move to the chapters that affect you the most. In Prostate Cancer For Dummies, you'll gain insight into

  • Discovering the key symptoms of prostate cancer
  • Recognizing the risk factors, and who's most likely to have prostate cancer
  • Getting a diagnosis, and what's involved
  • Getting well again, and how you can work with your doctor to come up with a plan to cope with your cancer
  • Changing your lifestyle to decrease your risk of a recurrence
  • Coping with the aftermath, from temporary to permanent side effects
  • Handling work and family, and how to help others understand what you're going through

It's extremely hard to hear from your doctor that you or a loved one has prostate cancer. But after you recover from the initial shock of diagnosis, you need to educate yourself, and, with the help of your physician, make a plan for getting the best treatment possible. Prostate Cancer For Dummies will help you achieve these goals and encourage you to maintain your commitment to managing your health. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book before you do anything
Absolutely the best source of information on Prostate Cancer and I've bought and read most of them. Easy to read and straight forward for all readers. So don't make any decisions until you read this book.I'm a health care professional and even I benefited from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the Newly Informed Cancer Patient, BUT CAUTION!
I freaked out when I was told by my urologist, just a few months ago, that my biopsy showed prostate cancer and---by the way---would I like to be put on his surgery schedule for next month! This is a fabulous book and one I throughly recommend for the newly diagnosed man who is reeling from the shock of getting this rotten news and not sure what to do.HOWEVER, the book is written by an American surgeon and that means a heavy bias toward treatment for everyone (even low risk cancers) and preferably surgery. It turned out, in my case, that the cancer is less aggressive than my urologist was leading me to believe (get that second opinion!).Monitoring the cancer for changes is a defensible strategy for avoiding the awful side effects of ANY of the treatments for prostate cancer, if your cancer is at a low to medium risk. All that said, this is still a great book and covers most all the bases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative Primer on Prostate Cancer
My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1999.He has had two cryo ablation procedures and yet still has the cancer (confined to the prostate).Having worked for a well-known urologist for many years, I feel Dr. Lange's book is the best literature we have read over the years and has helped answer the many questions we have had in language my husband can understand. Our urologist, however, spends a great deal of time with us explaining everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you (or your partner) needs to know
This book covers prostate cancer from the prospective of a surgeon who treats the disease and who admits that he was terrified when he was diagnosed with it himself. Prostate Cancer for Dummies covers symptoms of prostate cancer and how it's treated (surgery, radiation, etc.) and also covers how to cope with the side effects, such as impotence, depression and so on. The author factors in how cancer affects the whole family and discusses how the person with cancer can help his family help him. The newest studies on cutting edge treatments, foods to eat, how to prevent cancer from coming back and everything you might want to know about prostate cancer is in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prostate cancer data simplified
As a person who's spent hundreds of hours researching and reading about prostate cancer over the last four years, I picked up Lange and Adamec's new book with misgivings that quickly changed into affirmative head-nodding. I found the book to be well-organized, and as I scanned and flipped back and forth through its coverage of all the big questions, I concluded this is a book that has long been needed.Although the book is in the DUMMIES series, it is from start to finish a first-rate professional and easily-readable treatment of a complex and deadly serious subject -- prostate cancer.Whether it's one's first foray into the shifting world of prostate cancer data, treatment and research or one wants to double-check what one has learned, this is THE book to buy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable tale, though somewhat Lacking in Sense
Don't let the title of this review fool you into thinking I'm skeptical of Dodie Osteen's story; not at all! This gorgeous booklet, chock full of Scripture as well as Dodie's remarkable story, is only further proof to me of God's miraculous ways. God has used Dodie in many ways as a tool to spread His glory, and her disease was just another way He came through for her. Dodie is now living fulfillment of His promise to work all things for His good.

The only qualm I had with the book was not the story itself, but some of Dodie Osteen's occassionally extreme and presumptious remarks. Shortly after she and her husband found out she had life-threatening cancer, they went home to pray. At this point, Dodie turned to her husband and said "Darling, you are the head of this house. You are going to have to take authority over this cancer in my body".

Now, I've heard of men being told that they're the head of things they really have no authority over, but this is a new one: cancer? I rather think that only God has authority over disease, not man or woman. Talk about placing a load in your husband's hands!

Dodie then said that her husband "anointed her with oil as they got down on the bedroom floor, face down before God, and he took authority over any disease and any cancerous cells in her body".

This just gave me a bad taste: her husband "taking authority" over her disease and anointing her with oil? He's her husband, not a priest or an intermediary between herself and God. This display of theirs seemed overly done and rather misdirected. Just goes to show how men ruled the roost back then. (And I don't just say this because of her husband's actions; this poor woman had to go to a gynecologist who was not only male, but a friend from church! Can you imagine being a pastor or pastor's wife and having someone from your own flock inspect you in such a personal way? Blecch! The very thought makes me sick)

There was only one other comment in this book that I found offensive, but it did rather throw me. Dodie, when relating her prayers to God, said, "I reminded the Lord that my husband needed me, my children needed me, my flock needed me, and HE needed me".

I actually read this line over to make sure I'd understood it. She actually told God that He NEEDED her? I was so gobsmacked, I almost laughed. Dodie honey, God doesn't "need" anyone. Or, if He does, it's only because He chooses to. He made you, knowing perfectly well what He would do with you. The Word tells us, in fact, that before we existed, God wrote in His book everything we would do. We are needed in the world by others, yes, but only because God made it so, not because He was at a loss without us. What threw me was not only Dodie's thought that God needed her, but the fact that she "reminded" Him of this. As though God Almighty needs reminding of anything! Good heavens; I'm no stodgy conservative, but that line of thinking is laughable at best and blasphemous at worst. God knows how He plans to fit you into His works, Dodie; He doesn't need any help or reminding, and if He did, you'd be in big trouble having to entrust your disease to such a God!

Inspite of these faults of logic, this book is, altogether, a beautiful recounting of an event that could only be described as miraculous. If nothing else, I recommend you read it for the more than forty Scripture quotes in it; those alone should prove healing to the most deeply wounded soul. Rest assured, Dodie Osteen is a woman of gump, but she gives all the credit to God as the Healer of all.

Just a side note: I found just how much this book is needed in a world of cynics when I saw the customer tags for it. Some have labels such as "wishful thinking", "delusion", and the ultimately moronic "science proves there is no God". If people have nothing better to do than put this book down by insulting Christianity or making ludicrous statements about God, they REALLY need to get a life. Or at least read the book: I mean, "wishful thinking"? Dodie was told she had two weeks to live, and she's now utterly cancer free! Science didn't do that, baby, and neither did positive thinking alone. Try looking higher

5-0 out of 5 stars Outtanding book
My wife has been diagnosed with Cancer. This book has helped us to remind us of God's promises. He is faithful. Dodie's testimony is so amazing and encouraging. She offers a chapter with 40 healing scriptures that have been uplifting for us.I saw her the other day on TV and she does not look like a 90th years old lady. God is good, get the book if you need to be remind of His grace and healing power.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Those Dealing with Any Illness
I purchased this book after I was diagnosed with cancer. I found it to be very uplifting and inspiring. My husband and mother also read it and found it to be a blessing for them as ones who are dealing with a family member going through such an ordeal. I then passed it on the a friend who was diagnosed with cancer and then order another one for myself. The point being, purchase several of these as you'll want to keep one and pass on to others as inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very positive and encouraging book
I bought this book for my mother who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma(NHL) which is treatable, but fast moving. The family, church, many ministries and people prayed. Our family fasted and prayed, and today my mother is healed! It has been a year and a half since she was diagnosed.Dodie's book is really encouraging as she tells the story about how God healed her from cancer.I would also suggest Betty Price's book Through the Fire and Through the Water: My Triumph Over Cancer.Betty is another wonderful woman of God who prayed through for her miracle!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for cancer patients, but for anyone who is ill or not
I bought this book for a friend with lung cancer.I see Dodie Osteen every Sunday sitting in her son's congregation on nationwide TV nearly 25 years after being told that she had weeks to live in 1981.I have since come back and bought more copies of the book for my aunt with Parkinson's, my mother with rhuematoid arthritis, for my sister and her husband who have had breast/prostate cancer. An inspirational book whether you are ill or not that everyone should read, especially if you or someone you love is ill. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beam Ray Light
I just want to say I agree with the concepts here however I read that one reviewer paid $5000.00 for a Beam Ray Light.Hulda Clark has a book out called The Cure for All Cancers and she has instructions on how to make a similar machine that is just as effective.I just think the cost is ridiculous. I question the integrity of someone selling such a machine for an exorbitant amount of money when you can create a similar machine that will work just as effectively.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing to light the most important discovery in 100 years
There is nothing very new or interesting about the rife movement. But that is because of Barry Lynes' book. Before this book, the movement was unknown, obscured, and basically out of reach of public knowledge. However, as a result of this much-needed book, now anyone can read about the Royal Raymond Rife story -- a story which lead to a cure for cancer. In this way, this book does what every good non-fiction book strives--and rarely achieves--that is, to make an obscure yet important topic, open for anyone to discover. That is exactly what this book has done.

So, should you get the book? Well, would you like to stay in the dark about the most important cancer discovery of the past 100 years, or would you like to render it completely discovered and explored? Your choice. But for me, I chose to open the door, enter the room, and read about The Cancer Crue That Worked. And that decision may literally save my life one day, should I encounter cancer in my own body or that of a loved one.

In short, this book is essential reading for any human being who has dealt with or may ever deal with cancer. Since everyone could fit this description, I really believe everyone should read this book. Why should you face one of nature's deadliest attackers (cancer) without full knowledge of your treatment options? The rife treatment option is among the most likely to succeed. Yet it is the least known. That is why this book is so important.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS ON THE THIEVS LIST GET IT IF YOU CAN!
Buy this book if you can. This is the number one book that is stolen from your library in order to suppress the information. Believe me, main stream media does not want this book to be known. Barry Lynes tells all about Royal Rife and the machines he made that were confiscated and destroyed by the Medical Industry (AKA medical mafia) withgestapo like tactics.
Come on man this is the twenty-first century ; the future of medicine is electronic frequencies and the future doctors are diagnostic technicians;PLAIN AND SIMPLE. The book cover states FIFTY YEARS OF SUPPRESSION but it was written in 1987 so now it is more like SEVENTY YEARS OF SUPPRESSION. Even Nikola Tesla helped make some of these electronic medical devices which were also confiscated and destroyed. Need I say more ? end of story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Present Day Confirmation
Royal Raymond Rife seems to have been on to something that's recently been re-discovered.John Kanzius, a researcher and inventor in Erie, PA has demonstrated a frequency device that kills cancer cells specifically. His theories and technological devices are now being tested by Dr. Stephen Curley at the MD Anderson Cancer Center (they treat 79,000 cancer patients a year) in Houston Texas.

Although I'm inclined to believe most of the horror stories of suppression in this book, it becomes distracting to go backwards when the gist of the story is being positively reborn.

There is no possible compensation for all the parties except a future in which their theories are proven correct and human beings benefit from their simple and effective use in the cure of cancer

5-0 out of 5 stars Sorry sceptics, it's all true
This is a wonderful book, about a real cure. Of course it works, and of course the sceptics are wrong. However, the orthodoxy will of course put up a fight, and sadly try their best to convince those in the media who do not know any better to ridicule or suppress such information coming out. More power to the internet. So we must fight back, in any (legal) way we can - mainly by getting information out to the public.

As for the book, it is highly readable and a shocking expose of corruption and suppression. There is much in the world that is being suppressed at the moment, in technological fields - especially surrounding electromagnetics of which this is a form. I am widely read in this area, and sadly many other fields of research experience it too. Science is a very ego-driven corrupt cult at the moment, on the whole - mainly because the founding principles of science - an open minded search for the truth - have become corrupted into a closed minded battle of egos and power. A prime example is Robert Parks that Peter Bowditch's absurd "review" mentions below - Parks is not a man to have any respect for, despite his position, and he is as corrupt as they come.

More power to those who believe in Rife, and seek to genuinely recreate his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book taught me to teach my patients
While working in a very large private hospital in Omaha, I worked in Radiation Oncology. Finding myself alone, without a nurse to teach me how to teach my patients, a friend suggested this book. I purchased it, devoured it and put the information to use, teaching my patients about treatment protocols, systems involved in their treatment process, in terms that they could understand. I recommended this book to many of them, they always returned to thank me for suggesting the book. CC

I just finished treatment....this book was my touchstone! It is so filled with hope and love.I loved it.It focused me on Christ and it helped me dig into my faith.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Book
Praying Through Cancer totally changed my life. This book is powerful, but simple. When people are going thru cancer treatment their brain is overwhelmed with "stuff."This powerful book prioritizes this "stuff" and makes the journey very amazing.
I bought books and shared them with other cancer survivors and they were all equally moved by the power of this book.
Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Encouragement and hope
I am a 37 year old that has just been diagnosed with breast cancer.A good friend of mine found this book and gave it to me.I can't begin to tell you how comforted I feel while reading through these pages.God is speaking to me through these words and whispering that He is right here with me on this journey.I still have my moments when I feel scared, but when they hit, I reach for "Praying Though Cancer" and in moments I feel His presence and all of the comforting words of women who have been through this before me.God Bless you for such a beautiful book! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The Emphasis Is On Prevention
The title is a bit of a misnomer since the text concentrates mostly on prevention and devotes less than ten pages to traditional cancer treatments plus only one chapter to alternative treatments. The main prevention topics include linseed oil, macrobiotic diet, visualization therapy, bee pollen, nutrition and foods to avoid.

The glossary is brief and the list of resources very limited. I can only recommend this book as a general introduction to the subject of cancer prevention and treatment. The text is already somewhat dated in spite of its claim to be recently revised. ... Read more

My father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer not too long ago.He is 87 years old and has had a very full life. This book was recommended to me by the family member of another pancreatic cancer patient. The book is warm, true and full of both tangible medical strategies and spiritual hope.It has given me great comfort in this time of such unrest. If you are looking for a bit of light in this great time of darkness in your life this is the book to get. -Blessings

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for cancer pts or their families
LeShan really has it down; after 40 years of working with cancer patients hehas distilled how to fight for your life doing inner work.He says find your joy in every day, make your work the kind that makes you want to get up in the morning, make time for exercise and feeding your soul and loving others. He has research to prove it works. At last we have a guide to go further than our conventional medical treatments take us and making your life meaningful and joyful boosts your immune function.Immune function is the part the medical model forgot! You can do more and LaShan shows you how.I work as a music therapist with cancer patients and am a survivor myself. This book makes perfect sense; get it and read it!

4-0 out of 5 stars not only for cancer people butalso for heathly ordinary who wants to get the max out of life.
I dont understand somthing, why all the time people are saying that this is for people figuting cancer? LeShan in his own words says that cancer is a normal process that is heppening in every body 24 hours a day, it is only the immune system that isnt able to fight the process and as a result what we are calling a diease excist.

I am trying to say that everybody should read and accept what is in this book, the immune system is the gate for everything, dosent matter weather you are figting the "diease" or weather you are an elite athlete needs to strengen his body and mind.

It is up to you weather you use the tools writen here, but it is an eye opening book that tells you how far you can go.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is this book intended as a joke?
I've had cancer (and recurrances) for 7 years, and I've read every book on every aspect of the subject, and this book is the absolute worst I've yet to come across.LeShan writes a weird mixture of vintage voodoo and goofy "new-age" hype.LeShan's lethal psychobabble can be literally deadly as he lures frightened, newly-diagnosed cancer patients into drinking oceans of green tea while while scaring them away from conventional, proven treatment.Avoid this book, and the others like it, unless you want a good laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring - entertaining - wonderful
LeShan's message is simple -- put your life before your illness. For years, he helped people with cancer to live the lives they wanted to live, to "sing their own song" as he puts it.These people frequently recovered from cancer in the process of working on their lives.

Some of these stories are amazing. The people you meet are ordinary folks with a lot of strikes against them, but they manage to transform their lives and, in a surprising number of cases, cure their cancer.

I apply LeShan's approach in my wellness workshops and in my book, The Art of Getting Well.Get your life right and your health will likely (although not necessarily) follow.

"Breast cancer is never completely over," says author Marisa C. Weiss, M.D., a radiation oncologist. Even when x-rays are negative and doctors proclaim remission, breast-cancer survivors often suffer from continued health problems along with elevated levels of anxiety, and the specter of recurrence is just a small part of the picture.

Living Beyond Breast Cancer: A Survivor's Guide for When Treatment Ends and the Rest of Your Life Begins has won endorsements from both Bernie Siegel and former surgeon general C. Everett Koop. It deftly and with compassion maps out a guide for going back to a "normal" life: for handling fears of recurrence and worries that family members will develop breast cancer and for managing physical posttreatment problems, including the lingering side effects of radiation, fertility difficulties, changes in sex drive, and feelings of unattractiveness.

Living Beyond Breast Cancer is comprehensive--at more than 500 pages, it has the room to thoroughly cover pain control and medication, genetic testing, weight management, hormone and tamoxifen therapy, alternative treatments such as traditional Chinese medicine, breast reconstruction, and the various tests for recurrence, from PET and CAT scans to MRIs and blood testing for cancer markers. It's also a superb reference for emotional issues, from depression and generalized anxiety to insecurities about reentering the job market and revealing the cancer experience to coworkers. Weiss includes many quotes from breast-cancer survivors, so readers know they're not alone. The extensive resources and excellent index add to this book's immense helpfulness. --Erica JorgensenBook Description

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be updated
There's a lot of good information in this book...for 1998.Breast cancer treatment and survival has come a long way since then; this book should reflect that. Also, was surprised at how much stuff they covered that *wasn't* post-treatment.A lot of what this book covered was in other books for the newly diagnosed and those going through treatment -- I wanted more about actual life after treatment, not more recaps of breast reconstruction.

Disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best for Metastatic Information!
I've been reading and researching breast cancer on and off for 4 years.A year ago my breast cancer metasticized, and it's hard to find honest information (or any information) about metastatic disease. The title to this book is misleading, because it doesn't mention the fantastic, updated metastatic information. It is by far the most comprehensive, readable treatment of this I've found.I'm ordering several copies to give away.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comforting guide in the privacy of your home!
My daughter was sitting with my husband and myself in the office of myradiation oncologist. She spotted "Living Beyond Breast Cancer"on the bookshelf. She like myself was so lost when we found I had breastcancer.Neither my husband, daughter or myself knew what was going tohappen. She began reading the book and could not put it down. When theDr. came into the room he made comment about the book she was reading.Shewas so elated with all the facts, which are printed in such simple languagethat we could understand. The Dr. saw her enthusiasm and offered for herto take it home.Since that time I have not been able to seperate myselffrom this book.As I progress thru my mastectomy, I find new items ofinterest. It also helped me understand what my partner, my husband, wasfeeling.I read one of the chapters to him, at our breakfast table.Wesat and cried and agreed that the way he was feeling was as written in thebook.I never realized just how much he hurt and how comforting it was tohim to know there was a book written that could tell me how he felt.

Ihave since recommended this book to others. If you cannot get out tosupport groups or are afraid to go, this book gives you all the support youcould ever ask for in the comfort of your home or office.I am 62 yearsold and a very active business woman.I wondered if my business life wasover. The book proved my fears to be very wrong.

For myself and mydaughter, it is our lifeline!Thank you Dr. Marisa Weiss and also EllenWeiss. You have done a tremendous favor to women like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a resource that I can relate to and use!
This is the type of book I've been wanting. It offers wonderful support and needed information. The authors are empathetic and straight forward, guiding us to reach beyond (hence the title, of course) the psychological boundaries that women who have survived a bout with breast cancer put on ourselves. It offers clear, concise suggestions for what to do now and for facing the future, which may or may not include a recurrance of breast cancer. There are sections which are not applicable to me, but this is bound to be true when a text is so comprehensive. After checking this book out of the library three times, I have realized that this is a book all women who have had breast cancer need to own for themselves. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not so Shallow for a Shallow Person
Miriam articulates well what many of us with cancer want to say or at least think. The comics had the end printed on the last frame which made it really nice to read just a few strips or several at a time. My favorites are: Every thing is my Enemy, Nausea, and the Cheerful Tech. This is a fun read for those enlightened cancer patients who don't take it all so seriously. If you have had, or have the big C, you have to chuckle over some of these comics. Great recommendation for family members too while they are waiting with you during chemo.I wish Miriam, my little grass hopper, positive thoughts

1-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not upbeat
In spite of its semi-witty title, and being written in cartoon style, this is not a funny book. The author is very honest, sometimes painfully so, about her reactions to being told she has cancer, how having it affects her relationships with the people in her life, her experience with her treatments, and her thoughts on having cancer in general

The way she copes is to permenently plant herself in front of the television and become obsessed with TV Guide crossword puzzles. Her utimate conclusion is that knowing you are going to die takes all meaning out of life. Memories and past accomplishements are empty of significance, and there is no point in incurring new experiences.

What, she was planning on living for ever?We are all going to die someday and we, some of us, anyway, are bound and determined to make the most of the life we have. As a cancer survivor (so far) myself, I do not recommend this book to anybody looking for humor, hope or cheer.

5-0 out of 5 stars True, funny because it's.
I love this book and have read it over and over while going through an illness (not breast cancer).I like the episodic style, which eliminates the tedious exposition that annoys me in some memoirs and which makes every page worth re-reading.Despite the anecdotal structure, I felt by the end of the book that I had a very full picture of the narrator due to her honesty and her use of recurring themes throughout the book.

One idea that I appreciate is the book's discussion of cartooning as a "spiritual practice."It enhances my understanding of the book itself, and also I find the concept of a wide variety of spiritual practices (meditation, music, cartooning) interesting because I have the same difficulty with traditional meditation that Ms. Engelberg describes in her comics on "Stress" and "Spirituality."

Despite its unhappy ending, I find the book not only funny but also comforting in providing reassurance that I'm not the only one who worries about whether I'm doing a "good job" of being ill, etc.Perhaps the book actually works particularly well for me because I can relate to the narrator's reaction/approach to illness and yet the specific challenges of breast cancer don't hit me too close to home. The book resonates with my approach to difficulties at work and in my personal life as well as in health issues, and I would expect it to appeal to a much larger audience than those looking for writings about breast cancer.

In addition to being a good read, the book has a good collection of breast cancer support resources at the end.

3-0 out of 5 stars Meh.
Miriam Engleberg, Cancer Made Me a Shallower Person: A Memoir in Comics (Harper, 2006)

The late Miriam Engleberg released a book of cartoons (the subtitle is "a memoir in comics," though whether this is really a memoir is probably arguable; it's more a collection of sketches) not too long before her death that offer a frank, sometimes frustrating look at life with cancer. I read it about a week ago, and have been trying to come up with a review of it ever since. Time has not made it any easier for me to find something to say about this book; it just is. This is normally the bit where I'd be throwing around phrases like "profound insight" and "raw, but energetic, drawing," but none of them came to mind while I was reading it, and haven't since. I'm not saying it's a bad book, really--it's certainly miles and years better than Cancer Vixen or, lord help us, Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy--but it's not a book that really seems to open up all that much. Perhaps this is a function of the book's fragmentary style; in an actual memoir, much as I despise the things most of the time, you have enough room to get to know the main character as more than just a sketch. (Persepolis is a fantastic example of this, of course.) That never happens here; it's as if Engleberg tried to make the cancer experience universal by shying away from the personal. Not the personal details, mind you, but perceptions, thoughts, etc. that aren't common to those not suffering cancer. Nothing Engleberg reveals of her thoughts and feelings here isn't suffered on a fairly regular basis by anyone with mild neurosis--which is, when it comes right down to it, most of us. If that was the goal, it's a noble attempt, but it comes off shallow in its universality.

I continue my search for a cancer memoir that's half as good as Robert Weinberg's One Renegade Cell, and fruitlessly, but of the cancer memoirs I've read, this is by far the best of them. ** ½

Book Description
The cause of the malignancy is described in the earlier book, The Cure For All Cancers. But removing the malignancy left the tumors behind as they were, prior to the malignant development. Eliminating tumors became the focus of additional research, and is the subject of this book. The 21-Day Program described in this book does both. Once you win this battle, even advanced cancer can be cured.

The success rate for even advanced cancer is about 95%. So you can count on this method, not merely hope it will work for you. It is a total approach that not only shrinks tumors, but also normalizes your blood chemistry, lowers your cancer markers, and returns your health. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars have to be a scientist to understand it all
Way to complicated. It might work for someone that knows about chemistry and science. I went to school to be a preschool teacher. Way out of my league. It lost me. Might help someone out there though.

4-0 out of 5 stars starting point for understanding
At least Dr. Clark offers some education and explanation, as opposed to blind recommendations of cure. Reading her books, one at least has a starting point - what is a cell, how does it work, what is lacking... etc. At least now you know the names and her claims, and have the ability to do MORE research - is it really true that tumor cells continue to replicate because they are lacking 'breaks'? (obviously this is nothing new and a widely accepted claim). But she at least gives you a NAME for the break, so that you can take what she gives as a STARTING point to learn more. As no one has really found a 100% cure, we all must learn and research until one day we do find it (and we will).

If you have some understanding of eastern medicine, you won't find it too difficult to believe that there is at least some correlation between EXCESS and DESEASE - look at nature - wherever there is excess of food, something will be there to use it. Same in our body, when there is excess in our bodies (likely due to over-eating and STAGNANCY), something will find a way to use it. Fight stagnancy with movement, exercise, oxygen, BREATH...

Anyone curing themselves needs to realize the importance of attacking the disease from all sides. Obviously, no ONE cure has been proven. But for a patient, one of the MOST important things in a cure is VISION - being able to SEE ourselves healthy is as much a part of the cure as any external method. With her book, Dr. Clark helps us see, if just ONE way, to reduce the excess in our bodies... what's the worst that can happen? get rid of parasites, and you reduce the load on your immune system so it can concentrate elsewhere? That alone is worth it.

Call me crazy, but I feel a LOT safer using the fruits of the black walnut tree in my own back yard than I do swallowing some pill.

To your health!

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars, not for believing this , but for the choice;
Yes, much of Clark's work seems extreme, perhaps if mainstream medicine was a little more intellectually honest, we wouldn't need to go so far off the 'course'. For instance; When early detection is credited for longer lives, consider that in most cases, all of the 'extended' life is the time that the test was moved up,(if you took the test a year sooner, you lived an 'extra' year), ie; no real increase. Consider that many medical tests,(biopsies and mammographies), actually force open 'scar'-sealed cancer cells that never would've entered the bloodstream if left alone. Consider that many types of cancer are known by your doctor to kill you at the same point in your painful chemo and radiation treatments as you would've died , without pain, if not treated at all, yet they do their best to keep that fact unknown to their patients. Consider how the medical establishment at large claim that diet has minimal effect on helping patients,(have you ever eaten hospital food)? Ifphysicians want us to stop patronizing the 'kooks', then they had better start learning, and passing on, the truth. (Add to Mr Lewandoski): You confuse the mean, median, and mode. If you remove infant deaths and deaths from formerly untreatable war injuries from the "average age" of death, the population often lived aslong as,(and in better shape than), our current 'averages', and without all the supposed help of our modern hospitals and nursing homes. There was never an historical time when the average man was simply dropping dead at thirty, unless he was shot.

1-0 out of 5 stars 1:8000 v. 1:2
In response to the eloquent review written by the esteemed, Corey F.Dyok.Sir, in your review you have proposed that the cancer rate has skyrocketed from 1:8000 to 1:2... brilliant! In a brief review of the history of cancer for the lesser informed.Cancer has been documented in the literature for over 5,000 years.Over the past 10,000 years, life expectancy remained at 30-years until the past 150 years when life expectancy dramatically rose to 70-years."During the past 150 years, there has been a progressive elimination of infectous diseases as a major cause of death, and because most children now survive to reproductive age a sudden population explosion has ensued"[Cairns, John].So, plain and simply, diseases of old age occur frequently because we now have an aged society. And the diseases of old age are cardiovascular disease and cancer.

FYI: the Federal Trade Commision is currently in court to try to shut down Dr. Clark's website for making unsubstantiated claims...in their own words: The FTC argues that Dr. Clark's work must be scientifically proven according to their standards, otherwise we may not publish it, and therefore you can't read it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is this lady for real?
People will believe anything. This book is full of proposperous claims, and scientifically impossible devices. The idea of a 9V battery "zapping" parasited deep in body tissues is most ridiculase.Last time I checked, the skin was quite an insulator. The book has no hard facts to back up all the claims.Where are the many people that are cured from these cancers and even HIV/AIDS.There are none, because the only diaganosis cured were tested by some hocus pocus in the quacks private practice. No medically diagonosed cases have ever been cured by this money grubbing con aritist. The book tries to generate fear about being contaminated by everyday living. The cure, send money for off the wall products and supplements with no quality control packing. If you would by the brooklin bridge, this book is for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT INFO ON SUPPLEMENTS TARGETTING TUMOR SUPRESSION
My 43 year old husband was recently diagnosed with terminal lung cancer as a result of his radiation treatment 10 years ago for his Hogkins lymphoma. He underwent 4 months of chemo and also was fortunate to consult with a oncology nutritionist who recommended various supplements, some used in Europe for cancer therapy and not classified there as "supplements". My husband has the rarest type of lung cancer and it is typically described as the least responsive to chemo. The supplements recommended by the nutritionist target tumor supression, and angiogenesis (the ability of a tumor to create it's own blood vessels and spread). I bought this book because I was wowed and awed by another book of his, "Nutrional secrets that will save your life", or something like that. That the author is a neurosurgeon got my attention as someone I could likely trust to adequately research what supplements are effective for cancer. The book is easy to read and explains the action of the cancer fighting supplements, and is appropriate for readers without a medical background. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning how to not only safely fight cancer (and without all the side effects of Western medicine) but also how to prevent cancer and increase their overall immune system.

5-0 out of 5 stars A life-changing book
I wish I had read this book before I went through radiation and chemo. Even so, it has been a tremendous help to me in controlling my metastatic disease. It really gave me hope and a feeling of empowerment. It changed my life and very well may prove to have been a major turning point for the better in my health.

I have a fairly good science background so this book was a piece of cake for me to comprehend. However, many folks might find a few of the medical words a bit technical. If so, just move on. The big words are not essential to understanding the important points. You will get some very valuable information from this book.

Thank you Dr. Blaylock.
L. Cole, working on getting my MS in nutrition at age 52.

5-0 out of 5 stars Key importance for fighting cancer
This book is a must for those who have cancer and preparing for chemo and radiation. The key is that supplements actually enhances the effectiveness of the twin killers while enhancing the immunre and strength of the body.

5-0 out of 5 stars No cancer patient should be without this book
I so far have taken one piece of advice from this book and it has improved my quality of life so much that I can't wait to try more.

I am undergoing some really rough chemo treatments.Round 1 chemo left me achy and pretty much in bed for most of a week.My doctor told me there was nothing they could do for the fatigue.I looked at Dr. Blaylock's book and he recommended a supplement called Propax with NT Factor.I started taking it (with my doctor's permission) a few days before round 2 Chemo and the improvement is remarkable.

Dr. Blaylock also gives a lot of advice for any number of chemo side effects as well as ways of fighting cancer with nutrition. My advice is to buy this book - it is well worth it's price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive & informative practical advice for preventing cancer
Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (12/07)

Cancer touches countless lives every day. Chances are that either you or somebody very near and dear to you has had to fight it at some point in your life. While medicine has certainly advanced greatly in the past, mortality rates from cancer are still high and still scary.

While it seems to me that the American way of medicine tends to be geared much more towards curing the disease once it manifests itself than to preventing it in the first place, I found "Avoiding Cancer One Day at A Time" a very refreshing departure from the usual pattern. Extremely well researched and comprehensive, this incredibly readable book leads the reader through many facets of possible cancer prevention. While it is obvious that the authors have done an incredible amount of serious research, the book never gets too technical for an average reader. From a simple introduction to cancer prevention to an eye-opening Cancer Prevention IQ Pretest and a chapter on what cancer is and what causes it, the authors alert us to numerous things that we could do to increase our chances of not being one of the scary cancer statistics in the future.

While authors primarily focus on primary cancer prevention - as in before it actually happens, there is also a chapter on secondary prevention (finding cancer and preventing it from spreading) and some notes on tertiary prevention (support methods for individuals with cancer). Each of the chapters concludes with a list of practical points, and if you start your journey just by reading those, you'll have to agree that there are very many simple and eminently sensible steps we can take to increase our chances of staying healthy. If any of the topics discussed in the particular chapter really intrigue you, there are very comprehensive lists of resources and further online information available for advanced research.

Chapter 10, the "Avoiding Cancer Recipe Collection," features not only mouth-watering, yet sensible recipes, but also stories of people whose lives were changed by cancer forever. Do take a particular note of the conversion table for the recipes there: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of care.

The book concludes with Appendices, the first Appendix being the worksheets for applying cancer-prevention principles, the second one a scarily long list of carcinogens; and a nearly 30-pages long list of references.

"Avoiding Cancer One Day at A Time" was a fascinating read, which showed me how little most of us know about proper cancer prevention and how easy a great majority of those prevention steps really are. This book should find a permanent place in every American home, where it should be read, re-read and used often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful steps to prevent cancer
Paranoia would be a perfectly logical response to this cancer-prevention book. You might be tempted to rifle through your medicine cabinet and laundry room shelves, disposing of any product that isn't vinegar, baking soda or bottled water. You may never use an air freshener again or allow another French fry to pass between your lips. In fact, Dr. Lynne Eldridge and her brother, epidemiologist David Borgeson, warn against becoming fanatical in attempting to reduce carcinogenic threats in your environment. But they aren't apologetic about presenting a wealth of valuable information that could help prolong your life. The authors admit that links between certain chemicals and cancers are inconclusive, and they judge the medical establishment pretty harshly. Then they present the most current information based on studies and statistics, and leave it to you to accept or reject their recommendations. We recommend this book in the belief that much of what the authors cover makes sense. Don't get scared; get busy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Reader-Friendly Cancer Prevention Book I've Ever Read
Dr. Lynne Eldridge and David Borgeson have written an authoritative, good-humored and remarkably practical book on how people can alter their lifestyles and add years to their lives. "Avoiding Cancer: One Day at a Time" is about do-able prevention, and sets a needed example for American health care, where research and resources disproportionately address diagnosis and treatment to the neglect of keeping people healthy in the first place. This is an easy read, loaded with practical information - from everyday environmental hazards, to avoidance of carcinogenic lifestyle choices, to a deep and useful discussion of preventive nutrition. And there is a terrific "Avoiding Cancer Recipe Collection" which could be expanded into a book of its own. In sum, the best reader-friendly cancer prevention book I've ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice to help you to avoid hearing those awful words ...
In the introduction, the author says she wrote this book because she wants you to "be prepared" before the siren blows, announcing the disaster.

Say this out loud:One in every two American men and one out of every three American women will get cancer over the course of their lifetime (pg. 1).Now does the author have your attention?

Quoting from the British Cancer Control Society, "...treating disease is enormously profitable, preventing disease is not."

If far more money is spent to treat than prevent, and physicians are restricted by managed care--now is the time for us to know more and advocate for our own health. Other money issues concern how our food is produced (what is put on our plants to increase yield and what animals are fed to grow faster).

As consumers we will spend whatever is needed to treat illness, but we do not spend time and money to educate ourselves about avoiding the disease in the first place. And yet ..."80-95% of cancers that have a environmental component, only one third are due to smoking."

However:"One thousands Americans stop smoking every day--by dying." (Author unknown)

Chapter 2 starts with 25 questions--and now I AM concerned because I answered yes to too many--and my ignorance is showing. You may feel the same when you answer them.
