The American Cancer Society strongly urges people with cancer not to use a dietary program as an exclusive or primary means of treatment, and many long-term practitioners of the diet, including Michio Kushi's wife, Aveline, and daughter Lilly, died of cancer. Michio Kushi himself developed cancer and in 2004 had a tumor removed surgically from his intestines.

Product Description
As women quickly discover, their life when treatment ends is very different from what it was before their diagnosis. Often exhausted, anxious, and emotionally volatile, they are beset by physical discomforts, fearful of intimacy, afraid for their children, worried about recurrence. There could be no more knowledgeable guide for women embarking on this complicated journey than Hester Hill Schnipper, who is herself both an experienced oncology social worker and a breast cancer survivor. This comprehensive handbook provides jargon-free information on the wide range of practical issues women face as they navigate the journey back to health, including:

•Managing physical problems such as fatigue, hot flashes, and aches and pains

•Handling relationships: your children, your partner, your parents, your friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read
For those breast cancer patients finishing treatment or who have finished treatment, I highly recommend After Breast Cancer: A Common-Sense Guide to Life After Treatment by Hester Hill Schnipper. This book is filled with excellent information on what to expect after breast cancer treatment.

Many valuable books have been written on being diagnosed with breast cancer and what it is like to undergo treatments. But Schnipper's After Breast Cancer is necessary for people who have lived through treatments and now must face the very difficult post-breast cancer world.

And she should know. An oncology social worker who has worked for years helping women through breast cancer psychosocial support programs, the author found herself diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 and a second primary breast cancer in 2005. Being on the clinician and patient sides of the spectrum, Schnipper was the perfect person to write this book.

This step-by-step primer on coping after breast cancer offers information and tips on navigating life after breast cancer diagnosis and treatments -- from the first few weeks after treatment ends to the first few months -- as well as physical and emotional recovery, fertility issues with young breast cancer survivors, and various work and family issues that survivors face.

The book reads beautifully, thanks to Schnipper's easy-flowing writing style. I couldn't put it down, and even though I have been out of treatment for years, the book resonated deeply with me. As a breast cancer survivor, I know first-hand the post-cancer fears and vulnerability the author writes about.

This book works as a type of support system for those facing a post-cancer life. Readers who are finishing treatment or have finished treatment will find this book immensely helpful and will feel that they are not alone: For many survivors, the hardest part of the breast cancer experience is acclimating to a world that mistakenly believes that once breast cancer and its treatments are "over," that it's really all "over," and the breast cancer survivor should now return to "normal."

The truth is, life after cancer is exceedingly difficult -- physically and emotionally -- and the author has the courage, honesty, and integrity to focus on this important topic.

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the beautiful, touching foreward by the author's husband, Lowell E. Schnipper, a medical oncologist at the same hospital that the author works at: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Schnipper's foreward was so moving, it brought me to tears. As a physician and the husband of a breast cancer patient and now-survivor, he is on the professional and personal side of the breast cancer spectrum, and I cannot think of a better person to have written this foreward.

After Breast Cancer: A Common-Sense Guide to Life After Treatment is a must-read for those facing the aftermath of breast cancer. The book helps readers understand how to better make the transition from patient to survivor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have After Cancer Treatment
I was so happy to come across this book. I have received many uplifting emails from an online support group that the author of this book is head of, very helpful. So to find this book that she had written, and to find out that she is a 2 time survivor of breat cancer, it was two real. I found the book very helpful, now I know that many of the things I have been feeling is completly normal once you complete active treatment. I'm not going crazy! So for anyone out there who need help in understanding the next leg of the Cancer Jounery, this book is a must HAVE!!!!!!!! I would highly recommed it to all!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars After Breast Cancer
I have purchased 9 books since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This one book covered it all and is now my bible. Excellent read and so informative while touching the emotional issues that go with the challenges of BC. Must have for anyone diagnosed.

1-0 out of 5 stars too fatalistic for Type A readers or those remaining realistic but positive
I bought this during the gap between my lumpectomy and chemo.I found it horribly depressing, with quotes like "you'll never be carefree again".Yes, there will be some changes in my lifestyle, but that's also true of diabetes and other diseases/conditions.
Her whole attitude seems to be "when" the cancer returns rather than "if", which is not how I intend to live the rest of my life, however long that may be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rings True, Says ChemoDIva
My sister just finished chemo and radiation for stage 3c breast cancer and this book, she says, is the best book she's read on the subject. Not all sunshine and roses, or something that is just too depressing for words. But like hearing from a good friend who is relating the same struggles that you are now going through. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for this book
Was told 3 weeks ago that my baby (Jeromy) has Lymphoma.Heartbroken I decided to read everything I could so I knew what to expect.Loved your book because it came from someone that knew exactly what I was going through in a personal way.Jeromy is 11 and I will fight till he doesn't want to anymore.Thank you.

3-0 out of 5 stars more autobiographical than current news
Although I appreciate the narrative and history of the author's journey with her beloved dog, I found much of the treatment information dated, which, of course is understood, and although I appreciate her willingness to share treatments and food choices, I have found newer books with updated facts more helpful. I find I don't the emotional energy to spend on a story at this time. I need information to compare to my veterinarian and oncologist's treatment suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read
This book is a must read for anyone whose dog has cancer. Laurie Kaplan gives excellent ideas about how to handle this devastating situation. Common sense and helpful hints abound along with researched facts about cancer in dogs. This book showed me ways to fight my dog's cancer aggressively and I will be forever grateful to Ms. Kaplan - finally a book to help us.

3-0 out of 5 stars Help prevent cancer in dogs!
I lost my Siberian Husky a little over a year ago to a very aggressive form of cancer.. I found out less than 10 days before she passed away.Needless to say, it started me on a crusade to find out ways to treat cancer and prevent cancer, both in dogs and in humans.I found out that 1 out of every 2 huskies will get cancer in their lifetime.. !!!!I now have another husky, Bandit, who is 2 years old.I give him one GNC Shark Liver Oil pill a day to help prevent cancer.. the same works for people as well.If you do some research, you will find that Shark Liver Oil is used in several high-end dog supplements, and that is why..My aunt had breast cancer several years ago and was given less than 5 months to live.My dad sent her a full box of shark liver oil.. she took about 4 -5 pills a day for a year.. that's right, not only did she survive, but the doctors couldn't find any more cancer in her body! She is not in remission, she is now cancer-free!

I know it sounds incredible, but God has put many things on this earth to cure illnesses, it is up to us to find them..Another natural remedy I have found works is Cat's Claw (Una de Gato), Esiak Tea, Graviola (esp. for Prostate, Lung & Colon Cancer), Turmeric (another great preventative, take 2 pills daily), and IP6 (Inositol Hexaphosphate).. IP6 is very powerful.. It kills (yes, kills) cancer cells when combined with calcium and magnesium. The only brand I trust is Jarrow formulas.. It's about $12.Take 2 pills (or 1 if you are giving to your dog) first thing in the morning, at least 3 hours before you take any other pills.IP6 is extracted from Rice Bran grown in Japan. All of the natural remedies described above can be given to dogs, either as a preventative or treatment for cancer.Simply cut the dose in half (in porportion to their weight) as a preventative, or give the full human dose, if you are using it as treatment.I like VitaCost for ordering these, also local health food stores are good. Now brand, Thompson Nutritionals are my fave brands. For the Esiak Tea, only get "Flor-Essence" by Flora.. it is somewhat pricy, but it has been shown to effectively treat cancer.

Good luck and God Bless!! If anyone wants to e-mail me with questions, I am happy to help:luxuriousfinds@yahoo.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Flax Oil - Great Book
Excellent book, I recommended it to all my family.Everyone should read it and change their eating style.

5-0 out of 5 stars TO LEARN THE HEALING PROTOCOL... GET THE DVD!
If you are looking to learn and understand the COMPLETE PROTOCOL used by Dr. Budwig to heal thousands of cancer patients, then check out the amazon link below.
A Day in the Budwig Diet - Learn the complete home healing protocol to prevent and heal cancer, arthritis, heart disease & more

You will learn that "Yes, It's not just adding Flax Oil to ones diet", but all of her guidelines must be followed precisely, which are explained on the DVD. The body will then quickly begin to heal. The books do not explain the protocol.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different Approach
Dr.Budwig has a sterling reputation in the scientific world; her fidings are presented in a clear, comprehensive manner. This is serious reading even for the lay person. Perhaps specially for the lay person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important lectures from an innovative scientist and healer
This volume contains the text of 3 lectures given by Dr Budwig in 1959, 1976 and 1972.They present insights into the foundations of the philosophy and science behind her successful treatment of cancer over a 50-year period with her Oil-Protein diet.

As a blood specialist and biochemist Dr Budwig understood cancer as a fat problem. In these lectures she asserts that electron-rich seed oils (especially flax oil) combined with a sulpherated protein can re-activate the body's vital functions. She discusses the nature of sunlight, its relation to the human organism and how the sun's energy is stored in a concentrated form in these electron-rich seed oils. She discusses this in relation to quantum physics.

The treatment of fats and oils to make them keep longer alters their molecular structure and creates problems which can result in serious illnesses. The healing of such illnesses is therefore dependent on dietary and lifestyle alterations, in particular on the ingestion of the "good fats" (properly bonded with the protein) and the complete elimination of the "bad fats".

This little book by one of the world's most innovative scientists offers hope to those who are suffering serious illness. It is based upon an holistic but scientific understanding of the human being and offers a convincing explanation (and solution) for some of the main degenerative diseases that have been the curse of humanity throughout the 20th Century.

Her other works currently in English translation are "Cancer: The Problem and the Solution" and "The Oil-Protein Diet Cookbook" which offer further science and practical recipes respectively.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little book with lots of information
This small book is full of chemistry and physics of metabolic electrons and photons, and the benefit of flax seed oil when combined with a protein to make it water soluble in the system.

There are definitive sections on Sunlight as the energy source for all living things-if they are healthy; and if they are not they do not derive the great benefit.

There is a section on Oxygen since it is necessary for all the processes in living persons.A decrease in oxygen decreases vitality and longevity.

Overall you will have to read and digest this book because of the chemistry and physics the author talks about, and this material is mostly what was presented to fellow scientists.

As a wellness practitioner I found this book to reinforce my already confirmed knowledge about flax seed oil but it goes further and explains the electron basis for these things.

The author is one of a handful of people who studied fats and oils in the body, or more accurately how they act in the body.

If you are a student of nutrition and supplements, a wellness doctor, or in a related field, this small text will surprise you with the density of facts and knowledge you will obtain.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seeking health
This is a great book on alternative therapy for cancer. Very informative and does more than give theories. It gives clinical proof and many testimonials of it's results. I would highly recommend this book and therapy to anyone seeking better health, not just for those with cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars If nothing else you will lose weight and feel great!
I bought the Gerson Therapy after watching a documentary on it.There are myiads of people who were actually cured not just of cancer but many terminal ills. You will enjoy the reading and there are many recipes you can use to improve the healing of your body or just as a preventative measure.I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about staying healthy....

5-0 out of 5 stars Gerson Therapy supports self-discipline I need to regain health
I started reading The Gerson Therapy a few months after receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer. In the intervening three years I have pieced together evidence of damage I had not realized I suffered after chemo. I was given the book again as a gift in the last few months, and subsequently bought several more copies to pass along to others. It has been an integral source of information to help me know what to do, and what help I needed in order to overcome not only post-chemo damage, but also to correct several conditions that contributed to my vulnerability to develop cancer.

The Gerson regime is narrow, well-defined, and intense--if you have Stage 4 cancer. I did not have such a crisis, and decided as I read that whatever of the program I did, it was more than I've been doing. (It's easy to get "sloppy," tired, and disgusted with trying to do everything it might take to recover from something there is little medical substantiation I have, and I certainly had slipped out of a lot of good eating habits in three years.) But I've built on that basic belief that any change now would be an improvement, and still often go back to the book to refresh myself on why I'm doing something the Gerson way, why I can't eat something and what else is there, and to remember why I do eat what is recommended.

I feel better immediately when I do, and long-standing conditions are beginning to fall away. Finally I'm sleeping better, and have the stamina and energy for exercise, gardening, carpentry and other activities. The book is helping me immensely, also with the support of a certified nutritionist and the blessing of the oncologist, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is trying to piece together "what's wrong," and what to do get back on the road to recovery.

Product Description

A practical book written for both health professionals and the layperson, this revised guide deconstructs common myths about the use of massage in cancer treatment. Reviewing literature that shows cancer to be caused by genetic mutation and the influence of hormones, the opening discussion emphasizes that mechanical action such as massage does not break tumors open or cause them to spread. The book purports that the real medical issues for massage therapists center on ameliorating the discomfort of treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. The topics covered include massage in hospitals, in respite care, for the dying, and for exhausted caregivers, with appendices summarizing research on oncology patients and massage. Charts for the adjustment of massage techniques according to the treatment a patient is undergoing are also included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatand important info

Every Licensed massage therapist should have this book. Why? Because a large portion of our population has had a journey with cancer. After they are released from the Dr. and finished with treatment there may still be plenty of contra indications to consider. This book goes over them all clearly and fully.Loved the book, loved the class even more.It will be in my reference library forever!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of information
Wonderful book! Filled with a wealth of information. If you are a massage therapist , looking to learn more about massage and cancer this is the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People with Cancer
I have been a massage therapist for nearly a quarter of a century. It is wonderful to see a comprehensive book for massage therapists about massage and cancer. There have long been many fears about massage and cancer that just aren't true. There are certainly precautions and concerns. This book addresses those well. This book also brings out the heart of the massage therapist.Addditionally, I do like the updated edition.

I shared the book with my co-worker who is a massage therapist, an educator and a nurse (who has worked in acute care oncology). She writes, "My first glance, just to peruse a few pages, lasted almost an hour!I am very impressed with the contents, layout, pictures and scenarios. It is written in terms that are clear and concise. The 'Info boxes' and stories by therapists, patients and their families help bring the importance of touch therapies done safely to a population so in need.
Medicine Hands is a pure gift to massage therapists, thank you! It is written professionally, compassionately and realistically."

As instructors at a massage school in Massachusetts, we will definitely use this text and recommend it to our students as we discuss pathologies and the appropriateness of massaging cancer clients.

Again, thank you for a book that has been long-needed in our field.

Product Description
Finally, a much-needed voice for the spouses and partners of prostate cancer survivors--an unflinchingly honest and beautifully written memoir about one couple's struggles and transformation that serves as a guide for others dealing with the disease.

Facts:
* Prostate cancer is the most common cancer, other than skin cancers, in American men.
* 90% of the 190,000 men diagnosed annually will be cured.
* 2 million men currently live as survivors.

Though many sources exist for men dealing with this dreaded disease, their partners are often left on their own to figure out how to deal with personality changes and sudden "male menopause," how to redefine love and intimacy, and how to deal with side effects of the treatment.

Victoria Hallerman, an accomplished poet, writes candidly about her and her husband's experience over the last five years, including sections in his voice as well. A manual for surviving what treatments can do to a marriage, her book is both a compelling narrative and a supportive and informational guidebook. It's sure to be a boon to the enormous and ever-growing group of wives and partners of prostate cancer survivors who, like the author, need to be able to answer the question "Who are we now?" ... This book was an excellent guide for us. I ordered it the day we found out my husband had prostate cancer, and it helped us tremendously in making the decision on how to treat him. Ms. Hallerman covers all the treatment modalities, discusses the positive and negative aspects, and opening discusses the emotional effects of both having the disease and being a caretaker/helpmate of the patient. My husband is anticipating his surgery with substantially less fear than he had prior to our reading the book, and I am feeling very confident that our decision was the right one. I highly recommend this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Let's blame everyone else for what we experience
The author and her husband were living in a perfect world before prostate cancer appeared. From the second the husband broke the news to her (belatedly, under the guise of "protecting her"), it became a voyage of despair and nightmares of doctors who supposedly didn't care about them and supposedly didn't give them all the info they needed. They resent not being warned about changing emotional states and other treatment options.I guess it's good to know that there are such elements to consider when going through the process, but acceptance should make all these things easier to swallow, rather than resistance and blaming at every turn... perhaps the book would appeal more to couples with an axe to grind over this very natural and common form of cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars review book
very good book, clearly written. pretty depressing if you read it after you have selected treatment and it failed, so make sure you read it before you select your treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GO-TO BOOK FOR MORAL SUPPORT AND ENLIGHTENMENT
HOW WE SURVIVED PROSTATE CANCER is a guide, a psychologist and a medical primer to everything you need to know. This beautifully written book holds your hand, points out the icy patches and guides you through the confusing maze of differing opinions, treatment choices and approaches to dealing with the diagnosis.

Victoria Hallerman examines the emotional and physical fallout of each of the choices she and Dean made during this stressful time. She also carefully describes how they each dealt with having made some, ultimately, unfortunate choices and how this affected their relationship.

If you're in this situation, How WE SURVIVED PROSTATE CANCER is the best possible choice you can make. It may, for you, be the neon-colored cone that prevents you from sinking into an enormous pothole on a very rough road.

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought this book was excellent, even before my own diagnosis.
My first reaction to this excellent book was one of admiration that Hallerman could construct at once a moving personal account of a marriage under siege of health crisis, a constructive guide to intelligently navigating a daunting sea of doctors, treatments and medical decisions and an invaluable resource for treatment information, support groups and internet research. This was as an objective reader and acquaintance of Ms. Hallerman.
But when I received my own diagnosis of prostate cancer shortly after this first reading, I hurried back to the book with a new appreciation of her step by step approach to making my own decisions; the wealth of information gathered in one book; the brilliant inclusion of her husband's thoughts and experiences and her steadfast insistence on getting multiple opinions and not settling for a doctor I wasn't comfortable with.
I credit her book with my own decision to switch to my `second opinion' doctor when I was under whelmed by my diagnosing surgeon and his recommendation for a radiation oncologist.I sent a copy to my GP and he said that reading Hallerman's account of her husband's hormone deprivation therapy `changed his mind' about his absolute endorsement of its use.
This book is recommended for anyone making tough medical decisions as a couple and required reading for prostate cancer sufferers and their partners.

This book is great, it has answers to a lot of questions I had after I found out I had cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice - good gift
I've bought multiple copies of this, first for myself (spouse is a cancer patient) and then for friends who have cancer or cook for a patient. Great photos make the food look wonderful. Good recipes, good tips. My only hesitation is that you can't get all the ingredients in our small town grocery stores.
The sweet potato fries alone are worth the price of the book at the "used" price - all of mine have been less than half the marked price and only one was actually used, lightly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious and Nutritious
I purchased this cookbook because I was recently diagnosed with a pre-cancerous condition.I was pleasantly surprised to discover that every recipe in this cookbook that I've tried so far has been delicious and very easy to prepare. The highlights tried so far:Blueberry Breakfast Cake, Banana Bran Muffins, Baked Sweet Potato Fries, Spicy Miso Peanut Noodles, Cottage-Style Mac and Cheese.Looking forward to trying Thai Chicken Soup and Cool as a Cucumber Dressing. All the recipes are chock full of anti-oxidant foods and are prepared with optimum nutrition in mind.I used to equate healthy eating with bland food, but not any more! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful gift
What a perfect way to share the journey of children dealing with cancer! Well written with beautiful illustrations, Butterfly Kisses is a wonderful story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely story for children whose mom has cancer
I have passed this book onto moms with cancer as a way to lovingly portray the sadness and uncertainty of dealing with a cancer diagnosis. As a stage 4 cancer patient, 4 years out, I have found this book to be one of my favorites. It is specific to women, but not to a particular cancer. Kids need some guidance with cancer questions, and I feel parents can really benefit from a little guidance as well- I know it was difficult to know how to manage the questions I was asked. The illustrations are soothing and beautiful. This one is a gem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book for Explaining a MOTHER's Cancer to Small Children
I purchased this book to help my not-quite 3-year-old daughter gain a better understanding of my cancer. As noted by another reviewer, this book is written from the perspective of a child whose MOTHER has cancer, so if you are looking for a more generic "loved one" relationship, this probably isn't for you. That said, I appreciated that the book did not specify the type of cancer (usually breast) the mother has been diagnosed with as so many books for children seem to do. When I read it with my daughter, there were ample opportunities to stop and discuss how she and I are feeling. She also liked following the titular butterfly across the pages. It seems to have clarified for her what is wrong with me, what has already happened, and what will happen next. As with any parent with cancer, my worries are only compounded by my fears about how this all is affecting my child. This book has helped provide a reference point for us as her father and I continue to talk with her about what is going on.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading & confusing for young children!
After doing a lot of research I ordered this book specifically because the front cover and everything else indicated that the book was to help kids understand when "SOMEONE" they love has cancer. I was greatly disappointed when I received it only to find all the book talks about is when a child's MOM has cancer. It's hard enough to tell my children that their grandpa has cancer let alone confusing them with a book that specifically relates to the mom. Kids take things literal. The last thing I need them worrying about is that I have cancer as well! The cover should read "when your MOM has cancer", or better yet make the actual book more generalized as to who the person they love is because very few books cover the topic of cancer for loved ones other than a parent. The best book I've found to help a young child understand when a grandparent has cancer is "Someone I Love is Sick" by Kathleen McCue. It's very basic but it is a loose-leaf book that allows you to pick & choose what applies to your individual situation and change it accordingly as the person's condition or treatment changes. It also enables you to choose who the book is about: a grandpa, a grandma, a mom or a dad so you're not sending mixed messages to the kids by telling them one thing and reading them another.

I have had close relatives with cancer and I am a cancer survivor.I wish I had this book when my father and SIL had cancer because I didn't know exactly how to help. This is the perfect book for friends and family members who want to help but don't know how.I am one of the patients often quoted in the book so I know these comments come from the heart of the survivors who wrote them.I appreciate seeing my experience from the reader's vantage point.I also enjoyed hearing about what got other people through.None of us could have done it alone.I wish there was such a book for kids and teenagers with cancer. There needs are different and I find myself wondering how to help them uniquely because I am a school nurse.I currently have a student undergoing chemo for testicular cancer. We can relate in general but he needs kids his own age to be there and to talk to.Excellent resource.I recommend it for every place of worship, library, doctor's office and as a personal resource if you love someone with cancer.

Book Review: What Helped Get Me Through (American Cancer Society, 2008) by Julie K. Silver, M.D.

Edited by the award winning author, Julie K. Silver, herself a breast cancer survivor, the objective of What Helped Get Me Through is to provide stories, memories, and personal histories in the form of wisdom and hope by cancer survivors to others living with cancer. Dr. Silver surveyed hundreds of cancer survivors from around the world and interviewed medical experts and cancer leaders during her research for What Helped Me Get Through.

What Helped Get Me Through offers guidance, emotional support, and advice to those just diagnosed with cancer and those undergoing treatment. Cancer survivors have been in the same situation, and speak their own words about survival, pointing out the small details to the major discussions of the emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of having the disease.

What Helped Me Get Through from cover to cover:

* How to manage fear, uncertainty, and speak with your young children. (Dr. Silver had to do this herself.)
* How to explore and decide upon treatment options.
* How to take care of yourself, spiritually, physically, and emotionally.
* How to interact with your family and friends, allowing them to make a difference.
* What would have helped, but was too difficult to ask for.
* What could have helped at the time of diagnosis.

Dr. Silver also has included short lists which are invaluable:

* 5 Things You Should tell Your Partner Who Has Cancer
* 5 Things To Tell Your Children About Your Cancer
* 5 Things For a Friend To Do
* 5 Things Your Oncologist Should Tell You
* 10 Tips to Help Children and Families

A personal sample: "I was my own worst enemy, and I found myself living on the computer, looking for the worst news possible.I cured that by going to work...it really helped the depression and getting back into a normal life.--Kathie, nurse and social worker, diagnosed with kidney cancer at age 53 in 2005 in Kingston, New York."

There are many survivors who participated in What Helped Get Me Through, including famous names, that are out on the front lines supporting cancer research today. You'll recognize Lance Armstrong, Carly Simon, Scott Hamilton, Sharon Osbourne, Susan Vreeland, Elyse Caplan, retired Senator Edward W. Brooke, Lynn Eib, Hester Hill Schnipper, among many many others. Cancer knows no limits of age, race, gender, nor economic position. We are all affected, as What Helped Get Me Through testifies to.

On a personal note, I walked into the emergency room to hear my own father's diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. We needed this book then. What Helped Me Get Through will encourage many families through diagnosis and treatment, offering hope. Sometimes those days are dark, but there is always hope.

BackStory Byte: Julie K. Silver, M.D. is celebrating her fifth year of breast cancer survivorship. She is also the author ofmore than a dozen books, including: After Cancer Treatment: Heal Faster, Better, Stronger (Johns Hopkins Press), chosen by Library Journal as a top twenty health book (2006) Life After Stroke (Johns Hopkins Press),and Super Healing (Rodale).Dr. Silver has received the American Cancer Society's prestigious Lane Adams Quality of Life award(2006) because she of her dedication to cancer care survivorship.Dr. Silver is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and a practicing physiatrist in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and on the medical staff at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Common Sense Explanation of Prostate Cancer
When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 2003, I panicked and tried to get all information necessary about prostate cancer. Somehow, I found this book at a big bookstore and I purchased it because the other books on prostate cancer were eithe too wordy or too hard to understand. This book told me all I wanted to know in such an easy way for a layman like me could understand. I highly recommended and I purchased this book for a friend who was just recently diagnosed. If you like the "simple, common sense, and real understanding" of prostate cancer, read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the Newly Informed Cancer Patient, BUT CAUTION!
I freaked out when I was told by my urologist, just a few months ago, that my biopsy showed prostate cancer and---by the way---would I like to be put on his surgery schedule for next month! This is a fabulous book and one I throughly recommend for the newly diagnosed man who is reeling from the shock of getting this rotten news and not sure what to do.HOWEVER, the book is written by an American surgeon and that means a heavy bias toward treatment for everyone (even low risk cancers) and preferably surgery. It turned out, in my case, that the cancer is less aggressive than my urologist was leading me to believe (get that second opinion!).Monitoring the cancer for changes is a defensible strategy for avoiding the awful side effects of ANY of the treatments for prostate cancer, if your cancer is at a low to medium risk. All that said, this is still a great book and covers most all the bases.

The book was very helpful to help me with my diet change and to understand what certain foods do or not do for me as a person currently battling cancer

3-0 out of 5 stars Cancer support books
This book is very comprehensive -- in fact maybe more than most people need. In going through cancer treatment with a loved one, there is so much to do and reading a book along with trying to keep notes on what to do and what not to do just adds to the feeling of being overwhelmed. Plus when a patient is only convinced that traditional medicine works, it's difficult to incorporate a complete change of lifestyle into the picture.I'm sure the information in this book works because it makes sense, but it's not helping my situation with my loved one, unfortunately. I did buy a juicer and we are enjoying fresh juice almost every day -- so maybe that alone will have some benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate healing guide
After being diagnosed with breast cancer I was looking for new options.Chemotherapy and radiation were not something I wanted to do to my body.I wanted to make it healthier, not weaken it.This book gave me the courage to embrace new options and ideas about healing. Its been 2 years now and I am healthy and happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cleansing Before You get sick
I purchased this book over a year ago in Canada.I have been reading/studying it ever since. As a nurse practitioner in pediatrics and a registered nurse with Intensive Care background (of 20+ years), I have hypothesized for over a decade that toxins built up in our systems manifest in numerous ailments that are "treated" ineffectively by our current methods of healthcare/medicine in America.

This book is not about cleansing as a fad, it is about detoxifying your body and then decreasing the number of toxins you allow in based on great information, truth, and common sense.

At the very least, evaluate where your body is by following the steps in determining if you are currently acidic, basic or whatever (see book instructions.)Normal blood pH is 7.35-7.45.According to the authors, people with cancer tend to be acidic.(I have not verified this yet, but will do so soon.)This acidic environment if not normal.

Bottom line, this book is well worth your investment in preventing some of the ailments (immune system problems, gastric problems, etc.) from which many people over 40 are suffering.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT Book!
This book is invaluable to anyone who doesn't live a 100% health- conscious life.I've lost 27 lbs. in two months doing this cleanse, and I haven't even followed it to the absolute letter.Using Sonne's #7 and Nature's Secret Super Cleanse products while following the basic eating guidelines in this book has yielded wonderful results for me in a short amount of time.I suffer with fibromyalgia, but so did one of the authors of this book. She was able to get her health back, so I have that hope now as well. ... Product Description
In Letters from the Land of Cancer, award-winning writer Walter Wangerin Jr. offers his profound insights into the greatest challenge we face: confronting our own mortality.'Shortly after the cancer had been diagnosed I began writing letters to the members of my immediate family, to relatives and to lifelong friends. The following book will consist mostly of those letters. They will invite you into my most intimate dancing with the cancer, even as that partner and I have over the last two years swung each other around the tiled floors of ballrooms and bathrooms. Dizzy still, and day by day, I sat and wrote: This is what I'm feeling right now. This is what I think....'From afternoon to afternoon of radiation, Wangerin wrote about confronting his mortality, about living with the messiness of undone tasks and bodily weakness. He wrote about the medical procedures he endured, the wild mood swings that unbalanced his days, and the fragilities and strengths of the relationships that surrounded him.Letters from the Land of Cancer is made up of these writings. Cadenced within the letters are Wangerin's eloquent meditations derived from his pastoral experiences with the faithful passage of death to life. Seldom has the great adventure of life and death been as beautifully presented as it is in this testimony to faith, love, and the shocking reality of hope. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Draws Us Into His Private Life, Not as Voyeurs but as Fellow Travelers
On December 26, 2005, with his adult children and grandchildren still gathered in for the holiday, Walter Wangerin Jr. discovered a lump in his neck that proved to be a malignant tumor, metastasized from his lung.

Three weeks later, he wrote the first of 22 letters --- updating friends on his prognoses and treatments, his physical and spiritual health, and his reflections on life in the shadow of death --- most of them sent out over 18 months. (A few are marked as being "never sent.") These are missives a younger writer might have posted on a blog site. I infer that he wrote them on a typewriter, engaging an assistant to format them for an email outbox. Halfway through the collection, he mentions the possibility of publication. (In the second half, his writing seems a little less intimate, as if he's consciously aware of his potential readership.) Indeed, the letters are presented here for a wider audience, interspersed with short meditations --- six by his own hand, a seventh by poet Robert Siegel.

In the prologue he explains, "I'll tell my story step-by-step from within the ongoing experience. I needn't draw from memory." Especially in the first half, that immediacy is evident. What will the doctor say tomorrow? How will he respond to this pain --- or this pain killer? "I contain pain," he writes. And "I am sincerely grateful that my adventure waited until there were therapies and drugs to serve this sort of thing [pain]" --- though it seems much of the pain is caused by curative therapies. How does this disease change his relationship with his wife, his grandchildren, and his garden? The book works because Wangerin is such a good writer. He draws us into his private life, not as voyeurs but as fellow travelers.

Some of Wangerin's more interesting comments have to do with the language we use about cancer: we battle against it. "Cancer really isn't an issue of defeat or victory. We are all going to die." He goes on to talk of blessings received as a result of his cancer. "Surely it's high Time --- isn't it? --- that we pay as much attention to the blessings of a long affliction as we do to the pain for which we curse it." He also interestingly works with words, turning slowth --- some combination of slow and growth --- into a noun that describes benefits of facing daily life at a reduced pace, not by choice but by forced circumstance.

Would I recommend this to a person of faith who has metastasized cancer? Yes, if that person has a solid familial network, for that is where Wangerin gains much of his focus and strength. The book ends with a two-line postscript, in which Wangerin states that his health was "stable" in April 2008. That's nearly 20 months before publication in early 2010. Though strangers to him, readers invited into his life would have welcomed a well-deserved, press-time update.

3-0 out of 5 stars Personal and forthright
I'm not a religious sort, and I'm generally not a fan of poetry, so whether on the spiritual or literary planes, any Biblical verses Mr. Wangerin cited were pretty lost on me. However, they could be precisely what another reader might like best.

I found that I skipped the meditations and focused on the letters. The letter on pain ("I contain pain.") is the most memorable. Other standouts: how some of his human frailties (i.e., flashes of anger) emerged at different times; his description of trying to get air; his sense of Time and paying attention; and his close examination of his grandchildren's hands.

The ending disconcerted me; its abruptness contrasted sharply with the careful thoughtfulness of all that preceded it.

For such a small book, it is meaty, and I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Letters From the Land of Cancer
This is a painfully beautiful book. Walter Wangerin Jr. is a children's author. However, he's also a Bible scholar and a university professor of writing. This particular book exposes his personal thoughts and experiences in a memoir. The title should give it away, Letters from the Land of Cancer.

Letters is a collection of actual letters Wangarin wrote to family and friends after he was diagnosed with cancer and while he endured treatments. They are honest and revealing, but poetic and beautiful. Sad, but triumphant.

The letters intertwine his expertise as a Bible scholar, his resolute faith in Christ, his stark transparency as a patient and his exquisite use of language.

If you enjoy peering into people's souls you'll love this book. If you long to empathize with someone you know personally who suffers from cancer or any other life-threatening illness, you'll cherish this book. If you enjoy poetic language for its own beauty, Letters will nourish your soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching and Compassionate
This book is not just for cancer patients. It can apply to anyone suffering an illness, whether terminal or not.
The author shares his pain, his sorrow, and his faith in God for his condition. The book opened my mind up to the possibly of death and how we can face it, knowing that God is in control and with the right attitude, we can and will survive and overcome the fear of death.Heaven is our final journey and with that will come complete healing and joy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful letters
In this powerful collection of letters and meditations, award winning author Wangerin writes with raw honesty and challenges all of us to think about our own mortality, and possibly rethink our view of cancer.

He starts by calling his 2 year long bout with lung cancer a "dance" and later on, an "adventure." He refuses to call it a "battle."

The reader finds out about half way through the book that although Wangerin can't bring himself to pray for his own healing, he is certain .."healing is surely to come;either healing of his body or his own weary spirit."

The book is really all about facing our own mortality, which Wangerin says .."brings out the child in us,the heart filled with childlike longings and an infant's perfect trust."

All of the letters, written mostly to family members and friends, are beautifully put together with the grace and eloquence associated with Wangerin. #9 and #19 are two of the best. In maybe the most poignant of all the letters, you get a sense of Phil 1:23 as the author writes to a former student: .."I don't pray for death. But I wouldn't mind an early visitation. There is just so much about this world and its leaders which is so disappointing it crushes my heart.."

The beauty of the book is perhaps summed up best by the last sentence of letter #15:.."It is a good day.Gladness is available. Christ is at hand."

This is a must read for all, for we all have to face what Wangerin so honestly, beautifully and courageously faces head on... our own mortality.

I read this book initially when my mother was diagnosed with cancer. I also read most of the other mind-body books about cancer. This is far and away THE BEST of the lot. I'm an RN and this is the book I recommend to patients with cancer.

I can't say enough good words about this book or its contents. It was given to me as a gift from a friend after I had already undergone treatments.I try to make sure I give it to friends either before orduring treatments.I don't want them to waste a minute dwelling in anegative mindset. This book teaches wonderful lessons about how to trainyourself to have a positive and incredibly uplifting outlook on yourillness.

I am still ordering copies as, unfortunately, the needincreases. The fact that it is written by a man and from a man'sperspective has helped many of my male friends to be more open to readingit. That is yet another postive.

I hope you also find value in thisbooks contents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
As a new breast cancer patient, I searched on Amazon for highly recommended books. This one was rated well and I agree with others - definitely worth buying and reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breast cancer information
I highly recommend this book to any woman who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. The author covers every subject and practically every question that one might have and answers them in a way that is not frightening or threatening, but extremely realistic. It is one of the best publications that I have on the subject in my personal library and continue to send it to anyone I know who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, no matter what stage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I bought this book just a few days before my own surgery. I was thinking I wouldnt have enough time to read it. However I found this book extremely helpful. It is set up as question-- the answer, question-- the answer. Wish I would have had it the day I was diagnosed. This is the best book I have found with real, strait forward answers.
I have referred to it several times and know since my battle is not over, I will still be reading it.
Thank You to the authors!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
More comprehensive than other options available.Very direct and to the point in answering touch questions.
Highly recommend it for all breast cancer survivors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Resource
I am currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer and was fortunate to have a friend who is a nurse oncologist who, when I contacted her to share my diagnosis, strongly recommended Dr. Chan's book.It has been 6 months since my diagnosis and I have read, re-read, tabbed and highlighted his book and as I am still fighting the fight, Dr. Chan's book continues to be the most important, comprehensive resource and reference for me in my "cancer library".The experience of reading his book is as if you are sitting in his office and you have unlimited time to blurt out all the questions that initially race through your mind when first diagnosed and the answers are all there for you. Then, as the initial fog that shrouds your mind when you first hear the words "breast cancer" dissipates and you become immersed in the new breast cancer lexicon, I have turned back to Dr. Chan's book to gain a better understanding of my disease and the treatments that have been presented. Further, this invaluable resource has helped my husband and I to organize and narrow the focus of what questions to prepare ourselves with for the many visits to the medical and surgical oncologists and reconstructive plastic surgeon.I cannot recommend this book enough-it speaks directly to patients of this awful disease in "layman's terms", and arms you with the information you need not only about the disease, but also who are the professionals you need to form your team to fight the disease. ... Product Description
For more than twenty years, Dr. Holland has pioneered the study of psychological problems of cancer patients and their families -- whom she calls "the real experts." In The Human Side of Cancer, she shares what she has learned from all of them about facing this life-threatening illness and what truly helps along the cancer journey. This book is the next best thing to sitting in Dr. Holland's office and talking with her about the uncertainty and anxiety elicited by this disease. And it is a book that inspires hope -- through stories of the simple courage of ordinary people confronting cancer.

Amazon.com Review
"There are two aspects to the human side of cancer: what cancer does psychologically to people and their families, and how emotions and behaviors may influence the risk of getting cancer and its outcome," writes Jimmie C. Holland, M.D., founder of the field of psycho-oncology (the psychological issues of cancer) and chairman of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. "The human side of cancer is all encompassing; it's about you, your surroundings, and your experience of the illness."

Doctors often don't have the time or the skills to deal with psychological issues. The Human Side of Cancer tackles the emotional issues of cancer head-on. Holland knows there's no "one size fits all" coping style and is sensitive to each reader's uniqueness and belief system. "We do have overwhelming proof, however, that how you cope with your illness can improve your overall quality of life," she asserts. The theory that cancer patients with a "fighting spirit" have a better chance of survival than those who are passive is not, it turns out, supported by research. But whether or not your personality is spunky and confrontational or laid-back and accepting, you can use your own methods of coping to make sure you live a healthy lifestyle and hang in there with your cancer treatment--which does improve your chances of survival. The authors explain how you can choose a doctor who demonstrates the "Three C's" (competence, compassion, and caring) and gives you practical instructions for making the most of each doctor's appointment. The book also covers coping strategies, the psychological effects of different treatments, psychosocial issues related to specific forms of cancer, and the "emotional baggage" of surviving.

The Human Side of Cancer combines sensitive advice and explanations with quotes and anecdotes of cancer patients, research summaries, self-help tips, and checklists. The book is for both the cancer survivor and family members. Anyone dealing with cancer will benefit from Holland's wisdom and experience. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT BOOK-IT HELPS
I am asked about this book frequently because it helped me greatly. Now I keep this book on hand to loan to family and friends. They agree it answers many questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I work with cancer patients in a major cancer center, and would highly recommend this book.Dr. Holland has written a book that can benefit both patients and professionals.Rather than pushing a "Pollyanna Positive" approach to coping with a cancer diagnosis, Dr. Holland suggests that a realistic approach that includes BOTH the acceptance of uncertainty and hope for the future is most helpful.I have shared this book with several patients as well as several other professionals, and all have agreed that this is a "must-read" book for anyone looking for help in coping with cancer.

4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent resource...
This book comes highly recommended. It seeks to instill a feeling of acceptance and comfort for distressed cancer patients. The author discusses how to cope with difficult emotions in all stages of cancer, from initial diagnosis and onwards. As a doc working with cancer patients myself, I cannot overstate the importance of Dr Holland's message. For example, one of her points that really stood out for me was the idea that negative emotions cannot cause the cancer. Some people do worry that they must always remain positive, even if they have to fake it.Not true...being real and honest is far more important...having occasional negative thoughts and feelings is normal and does not make the cancer worse.Dr. Holland presents these ideas in one of the most non-judgmental ways you will ever read.

The reason I only give it four stars is due to my personal bias toward a holistic perspective. The author presents a conventional approach to cancer. She does not give adequate merit to the effectiveness of natural ways to control swaying emotions, instead guiding readers directly to pharmaceuticals. In addition, her use of the food pyramid as a way to guide readers to proper nutrition is outdated. For this type of information, readers should choose other books.

Overall an excellent read for anybody dealing with cancer, directly or indirectly.I recommend it to my own clients.Genuine compassion in the medical system is in short-supply these days...Dr Holland gives us a healthy dose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall very helpful
This is one of the few books I can imagine my mother reading. She was recently diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer and I ordered this book (and a couple others) to help my understanding of the emotional aspects of the disease and treatments. My mother generally escews "self-help" type books and outside help such as counseling. But this book is matter-of-fact and is presented in a way that respects individual differences and styles. It's not full of "touchy feely" (Mom's phrase) jargon but does address psychological issues effectively.Mom might actually find this one helpful, as I have. One weakness I found was the short section on ovarian cancer -- it addresses mostly fertility and sexuality issues -- the first doesn't apply to the older woman and the latter may or may not -- the writer seems to miss the boat on this type of cancer in the older woman.Overall, though, a helpful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Human Side of Cancer
I just liked reading about other peoples feelings and how they dealt with their various types of cancer.I am currently in remission of ovarian cancer and plan to stay there. ... Read more

Tapping the collective wisdom of the young adult cancer community

Each year, nearly 70,000 young adults between 18 and 40 are diagnosed in the United States with cancer. While there are many sources of information for patients, the special concerns of this age group are rarely discussed. One remarkable exception is PlanetCancer.org. For nearly a decade, those in this “gap” age have sought out this online community for resources, networks, and support from those who have been there and done that.

Planet Cancer is an honest, down-to-earth guide to living in this new world, from Diagnosis to Post-Treatment. Each chapter is informed by Planet Cancer’s voice—authoritative, funny, friendly, no-nonsense. Experts address issues from all sides around bedrock “What It’s Really Like” essays: deeply personal, unflinching, and often hilarious pieces written by people who actually experienced on Planet Cancer things like banking sperm, adopting a child, or undergoing brain radiation. The book, enlivened with quotes and real-life stories from Planet Cancer members, gives the uninitiated a sense of community and removes some of the mystery and fear of the unknown.

Planet Cancer is now a LIVESTRONG initiative.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift to young adults with cancer...
If you ever have the pleasure of meeting Heidi Adams in person (which I am fortunate to say I've had) you'd know immediately the type of book she would write if given the chance. It would be real.Informative.Honest.And most of all it would be brilliantly funny.Planet Cancer is all of those things and more. If only I had this book in my early days of being diagnosed myself.Perhaps there wouldn't have been so much fear, isolation and doubt. Heidi and the movement behind Planet Cancer are a force.Collectively they strong, knowledgeable and fighting an astonishing fight.Buy this book for yourself or for a friend, love one or complete stranger that may need it.It is packed with invaluable information, stories and oh, yes....HUMOR.There is nothing truly funny about cancer. But I must admit there were days throughout my journey that became so surreal there was nothing left to do but laugh.

Planet Cancer gives a voice to young adults and provides an extraordinary amount of useful and hopeful information. It's an essential must read. It is my sincere hope that someday there won't be any need for this book. But until a cure is found for all cancers there now is a 'planet' where young adults feel welcome, embraced and very well informed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is an exceedingly well-executed, informative, funny and moving collection. The authors are armed with the necessary empathy and smarts to speak to anyone concerned with the diagnosis of cancer: patient, family, friends, and doctors. As a neurologist who often sees patients with primary and metastatic tumors affecting the nervous system, I will wholeheartedly recommend this book to my patients and colleagues. Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars What you need when you need it, whenever that is.
We all know someone who is battling cancer, and unless you are in that position it's impossible to know what it really feels like. Planet Cancer is powerful because it shares stories and perspectives from many different people, and we can all find someone, or many someones, that we can relate to.

I know the book is supposed to be for young adult survivors, butI think of this as a perfect book for anyone who is dealing with cancer (especially those of us who refuse to grow up). Sharing love, support and the gamut ofemotions are things that can make cancer bearable.
Give this book to yourself, or to anyone you know who has, or has had, cancer (because it can leave your body, but it never really does go away from your life, so even if it's been a while we can all use a dose of humor, strength and support).

5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminates an Unknown World
As a 30-something with several recently-diagnosed acquaintances, I've struggled to be a supportive friend and understand this new planet they reside on. Over and over again, I think to myself, "Just be normal. Just be normal." But it's hard to be authentic when you just don't know what's going on.

Heidi and Chris have tackled that problem, and put together an invaluable tool for me, my friends, and the community we share. From heart-melting testimonials to answers to questions I'm too afraid to ask, I swell with appreciation for Planet Cancer and for this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars I L-O-V-E THIS BOOK!!!! (and not just because I am in it)
As a native of Planet Cancer I have known about this book since it was in the early stages. But nothing could prepare me for the arrival of the actual book. When I opened the envelope a few weeks ago, tears came to my eyes as I held in my hands the words of so many incredible people - many of whom I know very well. Some have kicked cancer's butt, some are still involved in the fight and some, like my dear friend Justin Sullivan, have moved on to another dimension. But what we all have in common is that we all faced cancer while in our 20's or 30's.

Every person in the field of Oncology should have boxes of this book in their office, house, car or somewhere - so that every time a native of Planet Cancer crosses their path, they can give them this book.It is a roadmap to the rocky terrain that is Planet Cancer. It provides VITAL (I will say that again, VITAL) information for people in the "lost generation" of cancer patients. In the most honest and forthright way, the contributors to this book tell it like it is.Whether it's about the early days of being diagnosed to how to deal with work, family, kids to fertility issues to how to keep one's sanity while living with cancer.I truly wish I had been given this book on December 22, 2007 when I was diagnosed with the first of the two kinds of cancer I've had.

There's one more reason why everyone should buy this book - because I wrote some things for the book.Yes, I wrote the section on "What it's really like to have a Colostomy."You can read about me and the adventures I've had with Vesuvius - my colostomy.I put it out there for all to read in the hopes it will help someone else who is going to lose their bunghole and poop in a bag hanging off their stomach! (told you the book was honest!)

As Gilda Radner said, "Cancer gave me membership to an exclusive club to which I'd rather not belong."That is so true. But I can say this, being a native of Planet Cancer has brought some incredible people into my life - several of whom are in this book.Reading this book will bring them into your life as well and your heart will be more full because of them! ...
