Product Description
German photographer Candida Hofer makes large-format photographs of empty interiors and social spaces that capture the "psychology of social architecture." In this small volume, her photographs of libraries maintain their monumental feel. They are sober and restrained, disturbed by neither visitors nor users, though Hofer forgoes any staging of the locations. As Michael Kimmelman writes in The New York Times, "Ms. Hofer is a straight photographer whose humanity and improvisatory spirit come across if we are patient enough to appreciate the serendipity of her light, the subtlety of her color and the quiet, melancholy pleasure she seems to take in finding, as if almost by chance, poetry in institutional form."
Born in 1944, German photographer Candida Hofer is a former student of Bernd and Hilla Becher's at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. Her work was recently seen at a one-person show at the ICA Philadelphia. ... Read more

Product Description

Over the course of the past decade, there have been remarkable advances in the study of human pathogenic fungi. These developments have taken place throughout a wide range of disciplines, and have come as the result of newly available genome sequences of pathogens such as candida albicans and other model fungi. In Candida Albicans: Methods and Protocols, expert researchers explore these exciting new insights, focusing on the study of medically important fungi and Candida spp in particular. Chapters examine critical aspects of molecular methods, providing information on reporter gene assays, transformation, gene expression in vivo, and methods for large-scale gene disruption. At the same time, the work includes in-depth descriptions of disease models of candidiasis, facts about strain identification, and guidelines on the preparation of samples for proteomic investigations and tandem affinity purification. Composed in the highly successful "Methods in Molecular Biology™" series format, each chapter contains a brief introduction, step-by-step methods, a list of necessary materials, and a Notes section which shares tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.

Authoritative and cutting edge, Candida Albicans: Methods and Protocols is an invaluable source of methods for investigators in the exhilarating fields of medical and molecular mycology.

Product Description
Candida Höfer: Paris Opera

Candida Höfer’s works have something timeless about them, and opera is perhaps the most timeless cultural delight. Having dedicated a photographic series to the cathedrals of knowledge that are libraries, Höfer in her most recent cycle captures opera houses, the palaces of performing arts. Höfer’s earlier pictures of public spaces—libraries, lecture halls, museums, meeting rooms—forever devoid of people, made us sense the presence of those absent. Her opera photographs take us one step beyond: empty foyers, orchestras, stages, wings, and boxes make us imagine both theprotagonists—performers and audience—and the fictitious figures, plots, and places that populate these venues during a night at the opera. In her most recent publication Candida Höfer portrays two Paris opera houses that are exemplary for their age and time: the neoclassicist Palais Garnier (1875), original Phantom of the Opera site, and the modern-style Opéra Bastille (1989).

Text by Gérard Mortier

Candida Höfer, born in Eberswalde, near Berlin, in 1944, studied with Bernd Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Along with numerous international shows, she participated in documenta 11 and represented Germany at the 2003 Venice Biennial.

Gérard Mortier was born in 1943 in Ghent, Belgium, where he studied law and communications. He served as a assistant to Christopher Dohnányi and Rolf Lieberman in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Paris (1973-1980); director of the Brussels Opera Théâtre de la Monnaie (1981-1991); manager and artistic director of the Salzburg festival (1991-2001); director of the Ruhr Triennale (2002-2004); director of the Opéra de Paris since 2004.

Candida Royalle, maker of adult films with a woman's perspective and former porn actress, knows how to script, direct, and perform an erotic scene. In How to Tell a Naked Man What to Do, Royalle shows women how to create their own sexy scenarios (cameras optional). She describes how to present and playact a fantasy: creating the "script"; choosing locale, music, and décor; selecting wardrobe and sex toys; having "outercourse," and directing the man in his role. Though obviously aimed at women who wish to enhance their sex life, her suggestions are not as one-sided as the clever title might imply--she gives plenty of advice about playing out the man's fantasies, helping him feel comfortable using sex toys, communicating lovingly, and giving him great oral sex.

Royalle intersperses "Director's Notes," which are tips, cautions, and summaries of sexual information. Writing with humor, she warns readers about places not to make love: moving vehicle, woods (flies are attracted to perspiration), airplane bathroom. Although she promotes her own films overmuch, her tidbits about making porn films are entertaining, such as the behind-the-scenes reason that actresses keep their shoes on during sex--it's hard to keep their feet clean on the set! --Joan Price ... 1-0 out of 5 stars WASTE of money! Such BASIC advice, you'd have to be a virgin living in a cave to learn anything new!
I really had high hopes when I purchased this book, considering the glowing reviews. The title was especially alluring because I can be rather timid when it comes to vocalizing my desires and talking sexy. But seriously folks, some of the "advice" was so basic I laughed aloud! Such advice included things like personal hygiene (nothing new and edgy like vajazzling, but things like using soap on your private parts and under arms!!). Really?! And all this time I was showering without washing my privates and under arms! Another bit of sage advice included not wearing "skin tight" clothing if you're a big-boned woman! Seriously? Other tips included soft lighting in the bedroom (wow! revolutionary idea!)and a list of outdated songs to set the mood. A miniscule section on talking sexy advised readers to just vocalize what you'd like done to you, aka: "Honey? Would you please put your such-and-such into my such-and-such? Thanks a bunch." Okay, so the "thanks a bunch" was my lame attempt at a rhyme, but you get the drift. Everything was so basic, I had to keep reminding myself that Candida (which, by the way, is also the clinical name for a yeast infection) was a porn star and now produces her own line of porn! She does devote large amounts of space to promoting her movies. She also likes to keep mentioning the fact that she's such an insatiable vixen that she's only had two "beaus" (out of the thousands of men she's slept with...yikes! Diseases anyone?!) who could keep up with her! Meow!

4-0 out of 5 stars Different...
It was interesting to read...however...it didn't contain much information that a normal 20-something doesn't know...at least in my experience and those of my friends! :)

However - it does have a lot of information that all women need to know!So if you're sheltered - buy this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars look elsewhere
This book put me to sleep, sent it right to the library.I wanted to know how toto engage a man in sex, while fulfilling my own needs. But not being stereotyped or judged for my sexual desires. This is not it.This was much like "Veronica Monet's Sex Secrets of Escorts: Tips from a Pro by Veronica Monet." which I found at the library, and worth the read.It is all about catering, and ignoring your own needs, which is fine sometimes. But most women are very well versed in catering to a man.It is okay if you want a one-sided view of sexual communion/enjoyment.

1-0 out of 5 stars How to listen to Candida talk about herself
Maybe this book works for repressed middle-aged people, but it didn't tell me anything I don't already know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Candida Royalle Really Does Have Something To Say
This fascinating look into the mind of an ex-porn star turned female porn filmmaker was the first full book I'd read on my new Kindle. I must admit being surprised at how well the Kindle functions. It is very easy on the eyes and unlike working on my Mac my eyes don't get tired from reading text on the Kindle. Even reading the Kindle while riding an exercise bike or commuting by train doesn't bother my eyes and I'm not even reading text set on the largest font setting. The Kindle is proof that E-Books will soon become a favored way to publish as well as the chief method of reading books. It is a sign of the digital publishing world to come. The savings for printing, storing and shipping books will be cut those costs to basically nothing. Entire forests will be spared. E-Books are the ultimate goal of the green movement. In addition to saving a ton of money, E-Books can also be easily updated regularly.
Returning to the book review, I enjoyed this particular book because as a former male documentary film and video maker, it was fascinating to me to see how the feminine mind works. Their approach to making erotica and porn film is very different than the approach and vision of most of their male counterparts. This author/filmmaker approaches it just as she approaches sexual fantasies. In this volume the writer explains to female readers how to apply the same principles she uses to making an erotic female porn film to finding and judging potential mates. She is looking for sensitive men who are truly interested in her and making her happy. She explains how she judges whether a potential leading man for one of her films is sensitive enough to exhibit the erotic passions she desires in her own erotic fantasy life as well in her film. It only takes reading the first few chapters to realize the truth of the statement that it is "women who rule the world." They are the ones in charge just as the passive Sub is really in charge of the Dom as well as the scene.
I'd not yet reached the half way mark in the book when I began to doubt that it was really necessary to apply all the same standards to finding leading men for her films as she was using for finding her own flawless lover. Her image of her own perfect lover/mate also seemed at bit too perfect of a fantasy to actually find in real life. She appeared to have placed her own ideal lover upon a pedestal much like an ancient Greek statue of an nude Olympian. Feeling a bit inferior to her perfect model I continued reading. To me, photography, film and video are not real. The camera lies. Models and actors usually aren't at all like they appear on screen. Their bone structure and other physical features that often aren't even noticeable in real life, come together in such a way to make them appear more perfect than they really are when photographed. They are simply photogenic. Some actors also can act and too many can't. What you see on the screen is often 180 degrees from what the actors are really like. With these nagging doubts in the back of my mind I read on. It's easy to see why women tend to like this book so well. The same is probably true for her erotic videos.
Even as a male, I found reading this book enlightening. The author/filmmaker is constantly stressing how important lighting, music, makeup, mood and location are for love making both in film and in real life. She provides long lists of sample music and practical ideas for flattering lighting. She warns her readers how to avoid finding themselves in a situation where you are worried about your lover becoming more interested in the actress on the screen than you and how to avoid having their lover or themselvesexperience feelings of physical inferiority to the movie actors in her films.
Another of the many puzzling things to me was how many people really have the time or energy to spend so much time having sex. Many of her fantasy sessions seem intended to last for many hours or most of the night. That's good if you have the entire weekend for playing such games or if you don't have to get up and go to work in the morning. Perhaps the author was describing only occasional sexual fantasies? This book is well worth the time it takes to read and enjoy. It makes you want to run out of the house or office to buy some of the author's erotic films as soon as possible. This tome gives the reader lots of ideas for adding the extra orgasms back in their sex life. Every couple can benefit from some of the creative suggestions the author provides for adding zip to their routine sex lives.
One final note on the sub-topic of this review. It's difficult to resist mentioning how much I enjoyed the delivery system of this book. Although I've been doing more and more reading on my Kindle, yesterday, when I was ordering a book on Amazon.com I noticed there was a chance to order the book on Kindle or in actual "dead tree" paperback. I choose the paperback book. The price reduction for the Kindle version wasn't enough of a savings. Although I'm adapting to Kindle editions, given a choice I'll still usually pick the regular, more familiar book format. I expect that in many cases, unless I'm planning to be traveling and don't want to carry around a bunch of heavy books, I'll still favor the "real hard copy of the book" if that version is available. However, I predict that in the near future most books will only be available in digital formats. Economics and conservation goals will eventually combine to eliminate the choice. It may take decades before the new generation thinks "Digital E-Books" are the normal method of publication, but it is coming. One only has to see what has happened to photography to see the future of book publishing. I hope this reviewer's fascination with this new book delivery system doesn't distract the potential reader of this volume from buying this enlightening guide book for upgrading their own sex life with dozens and dozens of very pragmatic and creative suggestions. It's fun to have so many kinds ofyummy desserts from which to choose. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars At Long Last - - Fantastic, Tasty YEAST-FREE Recipes!
For most people, being diagnosed with candidiasis is like receiving a "sentence" of impending doom to eat bland, flavorless, monotonous foods in order to rid our bodies of the overgrowth of thenaturally-occuring bacteria called candida albicans, which many doctorsbelieve is the root cause of many debilitating diseases. For many years,it seems, one would need to endure 6 weeks to 6 months of this monotonousdiet in order to regain proper balance between these "bad"bacterias and the "good" bacterias in our intestines - andeventually regain our health and stamina. There has always been a need forrecipes to enhance the variety and enjoyment of eating that so many of usdesire in order to inspire us to stay on any new diet.Xandria Williamsnot ONLY provides us with a potpourri of these recipes, but gives a veryconcise and accurate description of the "Yeast Syndrome", whatcauses it, what the known symptoms are, and what to do to prevent it in thefuture. Her writing includes many clinical descriptions, however, shemakes all of it VERY easy to understand. The lists of foods to avoid, aswell as alternatives to those foods was a huge help for me.Many booksjust list foods to avoid......with no "alternatives" that wouldclosely replace those foods in our daily diet.I recommend this book toanyone who needs to know more about coping with candidiasis and loves tocook. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Grossly disappointling!
The recipies contained in this book include white flour--need I say more? The author also recommends store bought soy and rice milks--hasn't she read the labels of these? They usually contain refined sugars. I realize that the presence and the elimination of candida is scientifically debated, and generally poo-pooed by the medical world. Still, I believe that in the world of alternative and natural health it is widely accepted that to eliminate candida the first things to go are wheat flour and sugar. The title and kindle sample are misleading to the buyer. I will think twice before purchasing another kindle book. Can I have my money back?

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent!
This cook book is a must for anyone who wants to improve their health. The recipes are absolutely delicious and are easy to make using everyday ingredients. Look for Jane's new book coming out this fall that discusses in detail the link to yeast overgrowth and disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book-speedy service!
This modest little book was recommended to me by a friend, as I was interested in "Unified Field theories" of health.Doctors are just now linking "inflammation" to a variety of conditions. But what was causing the inflammation? This author makes a persuasive case for yeast as the prime mover; yeast begets fungus, which is as pesky for human bodies as it is for garden plants.Even better, this books lays out simple and doable ways to purge the fungus amungus and to construct a fungus-free everyday cuisine.Oh, and ordering was snappy and snag-free!

I hear the author has an updated and expanded treatise coming out--I'll pre-order!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Recipes
The recipes in this book are delicious!!My husband and I are both fighting off the result of antibiotics, steroids and bad diet habits over the years that have resulted in systemic candida problems. The information in the beginning of the book was really helpful and explained a lot of what causes what and how to help treat symptoms.I have had friends ask for some of the recipes and I would highly recommend this book to those who are fighting with candida problems.Diet plays a huge part in recovering and maintaining a healthy body.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yeast free recipes for the real people
This is a great recipe book. The introduction alone was worth buying the book. It's full of lots of tidbits and information on how to deal with the "Yeast Beast". This recipe book is for the rest of us people who are looking for good, home cooking that is simple and down to earth using everyday ingredients that are pronounceable and stuff you probably already have in your pantry. ... Product Description
The German city of Weimar, home to illustrious Renaissance and Baroque artists such as Cranach and Bach, became a major place of pilgrimage in the 18th century. With her famous library and with distinguished literary circles, Duchess Anna Amalia laid the foundations for the flourishing of literary expression in the city. Her son, Duke Karl August, called Herder, Goethe and Schiller to his court. With them, Weimar became the center of German intellectual life, the "city of poets and thinkers"--a reputation Weimar has nurtured to the present day. For her libraries project, Candida Hofer photographed the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in 2004. Shortly afterwards it fell victim to a fire. In summer 2006, she focused on historic interior spaces: the Goethe National Museum, the Residential Palace and other castles, as well as various theaters. Hofer's photographic style perfectly captures Weimar's special aura. Her strictly composed pictures seem to contain the spirit of the Enlightenment. ... Read more

Product Description
From 2004 to 2007, the noted German art photographer Candida Hofer traveled the world to photograph Japanese-born, New York-based Conceptual artist On Kawara's iconic Date Paintings in the homes of private collectors. Because this series of paintings always and only depicts one specific date--in bold, white, capital letters against a darker monochromatic ground--collectors often choose their own for a sentimental reason like a birthday, a special anniversary or an important day in history. Because of this, the paintings are often given pride of place within a collection; in many cases they are situated in a place where the collector spends much of his or her time. All this being said, Kawara is widely considered one of the most important artists of the postwar era, and his work can be found in many of the most significant private collections in the world--among them Friedrich Christian Flick's, Leonard and Luise Riggio's, David and Monica Zwirner's, Kasper Konig's, Jutta Linthe and Walther Konig's, Thomas Struth's and Yvon Lambert's. Thus Hofer's photographs capture the paintings in very good company, both in terms of their artistic companions and of the overall aesthetics of the spaces they inhabit. ... Read more

Product Description

In 1921 Sam Rodia, an Italian laborer and tile setter, started work on an elaborate assemblage in the backyard of his home in Watts, California. The result was an iconic structure now known as the Watts Towers. Rodia created a work that was original, even though the resources available to support his project were virtually nonexistent. Each of his limitations—whether of materials, real estate, finances, or his own education—passed through his creative imagination to become a positive element in his work. In The Modern Moves West, accomplished cultural historian Richard Cándida Smith contends that the Watts Towers provided a model to succeeding California artists that was no longer defined through a subordinate relationship to the artistic capitals of New York and Paris.

Tracing the development of abstract painting, assemblage art, and efforts to build new arts institutions, Cándida Smith lays bare the tensions between the democratic and professional sides of modern and contemporary art as California developed a distinct regional cultural life. Men and women from groups long alienated—if not forcibly excluded—from the worlds of "high culture" made their way in, staking out their participation with images and objects that responded to particular circumstances as well as dilemmas of contemporary life, in the process changing the public for whom art was made. Beginning with the emergence of modern art in nineteenth-century France and its influence on young Westerners and continuing through to today's burgeoning border art movement along the U.S.-Mexican frontier, The Modern Moves West dramatically illustrates the paths that California artists took toward a more diverse and inclusive culture.

Product Description
The martyrs in early Christian texts are consistently portrayed as Christ figures. Their words, actions, and deaths are modeled on the person and work of Jesus. As suchthey provide us with insights into the interpretation and use of scripture in geographically diverse locations and a variety of social settings in a period for which there are lamentably few sources. Moss begins by tracing out the theme of imitating Jesus through suffering in the literature of the Jesus movement and early church and its application in martyrdom literature. She demonstrates the importance of imitating the sufferings of Christ as a practice and ethos in the Jesus movement. She then proceeds to the interpretations of the martyr's death and afterlife. Moss argues against the dominant theory that the martyr's death was viewed as a sacrifice, finding that in their post-mortem existence martyrs continue to be assimilated to Christ, closely resembling the exalted Christ as intercessors, judges, enthroned monarchs and banqueters. The characterization of the martyr as "another Christ" ultimately conflicted with emerging theological commitments to Christ's uniqueness and the egalitarian nature of post-mortem existence for his followers. But for a brief period, Moss finds, the martyr's imitation was viewed as a way in which he or she shared in the status of the exalted Christ. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
I read this book from cover to cover recently and found it very helpful. Most of the books out there on Candida are written by doctors and they write about what they know NOT what you need to know. The authors spent a lot of time including the tidbits of knowledge that you won't find anywhere else and the book is truly geared toward helping solve the entire problem. I have read all of the other books on this topic and this one is much more helpful and resourceful. Thanks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect (nothing is)
Very good book.It covers the ins and outs. But it's the tip of the iceberg.I could add:Your immune system is the problem.Candida is an effect of something else, not a cause. They key lies in your Adrenals. If they are damaged, there goes your immune system's ability to fight Candida.Candida is like a cold. It's not really an illness in itself, rather, a way in which your body warns you to slow down.Your body warns you by stages.Candida could be considered stage 2.Don't let yourself get so immuno-compromized that you get to stage 3 (because it could be Crohn's or Cancer).
A lot of people think they go on this diet for a year or two, and then all is well and we can dive right back into the world of McDonald's, ice-cream and booze. It's like a cocaine addict saying "I'll get clean for a year or two." The fact is:Your body didn't like the ice-cream, fast food and boooze because it was NEVER MEANT to have it.If your car needs 93 octane and you give it 80 it will work at first, then it will start to knock, and eventually you'll damage it. And if you give it 100 octane, you'll burn it. Same goes for your body, pal.If you can no longer tolerate Candida (plain old yeast), it means that YOU NEVER WILL AGAIN (and you never really did, so it was just a matter of time before something went wrong). That is what this book fails to tell you. You have been consuming yeast and refined sugar all your life and you never should have.Simultaneously you have been damaging your adrenals all your life with caffeine and what-not and you shouldn't have. You've been taking fermented junk (like vinegar and wine and raisins) and you shouldn't have.THE BIG QUESTION:WHY ME????
It's genetics.That's what you and I got handed.So let's deal with it.
Recommended: Buy this book.
Buy Eat Right For Your Type by D'Adamo, so you can know what your blood type and race are (and are not) supposed to eat.
Get an ELISA/ACT allergy test (nothing damages your immune system more than every day eating something you are allergic to).
Stop all sugars (including fruit) for two years (after two years, you can have two pieces of fruit every day, three is pushing it).
Discontinue all fermented food like cheese, vinegar and alcohol FOREVER.Fermented is equal to septic.(As far as YOUR body is concerned).Remember the 80 octane scenario...
Buy an ozone generator (to get rid of mold in your house, because if you have Candidiasis, you are allergic to mold, period).
Consume VAST amounts of probiotics (Acidophilus and Bifidus BOTH).
Have vitamin B complex and magnesium (spread out the Magnesium and watch it, because too much equals diahrrea).
Keep a perfect routine.(of meals and rest).
Check yourself for Gluten intollerance (wheat, oats, etc...).
Once you get yourself balanced, you'll feel better than you ever did (because for the first time in your life, you'll be eating the way Nature meant you to).
WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!Certain aspects of modern society have failed us miserably. Our diet is one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opener!
This is one of the most comprehensive books on candida I've read. Covers everything from defining what it is, how it can get out of control, risk factors and symptoms. Clearly presents information on the various treatments including dietary and lifestyle changes, herbals, prescriptionsmeds and supplements. A good, general education on candida-related complex.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject. Comprehensive and well written.

Product Description
This past November, Berlin gained yet one more spectacular example of contemporary architecture. The new Dutch Embassy by OMA/Rem Koolhaas has been built on the River Spree in what used to be East Berlin. Renowned for his Kunsthal in Rotterdam, Congrexpo in Lille, and the villa in Bordeaux, among other extraordinary projects, Koolhaas will now also be recognized for his Berlin embassy, a structure that firmly attests to the astonishing design talent of the Netherlands' best-known architect. Two concepts underpin the design for the embassy, the first instigated by the city's strict planning regulations, which require that every corner of a city block be built up. Thus, Koolhaas designed one corner of the site to fit a freestanding cube that houses the actual embassy; the other corners are defined by an L-shaped block of three houses for embassy staff. But the principal organizing element is a continuous route that spirals through the building; the different embassy departments are strung off it discretely. The spiral winds its way through the cube accompanied by new and unexpected views of the building--and of the city. In this publication, sketches, drawings and models illustrate the design's points of departure, and Koolhaas himself expounds upon the project's context. German photographer Candida Höfer, famous for her large-scale color photographs of architectural spaces, offers her personal perspective on the embassy's exterior and interior, while Parisian architecture critic François Chaslin provides a textual analysis.

Essay by François Chaslin.~Photographs by Candida Höfer.
