Book Description
The architectural history of the Louvre stretches back to the early 13th century. A comparatively modest royal fortress, it became the royal residence under François I, friend and patron of Leonardo da Vinci. Louis XIV turned the Louvre into a splendid castle. Four years after the outbreak of the French Revolution, the Louvre opened its doors to the public. The royal art collections, with constant additions through Napoleon's military campaigns and forays as well as donations, purchases and excavations, today make the Louvre one of the world's richest and finest museums.Candida Höfer, known for her images of deserted public spaces, photographed the empty rooms and galleries of the Louvre on days when it was closed to the public. In her luminous color pictures, the treasures of Western art enter into a silent yet eloquent dialog with the architectural setting, the luxurious or sober décor, the building's past, and its present as a museum. Texts by Henri Loyrette, Marie-Laure Bernadac, and others ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FEAST WITHOUT YEAST
WOW! JUST THE BOOK I NEEDED TO BEGIN. THE POUNDS ARE MELTING AWAY, AS I
SUBSTITUTE FERMENTED FOODS WITH HEALTHY ONES FOR ME.THIS BOOK IS EASY TO FOLLOW AND NOT AS STRICT AS SOME. THE STORIES AND FINDINGS ABOUT HOW AN OVER ABUNDANCE YEAST(CANDIDA)IN THE BODY CAN CAUSE SOME SERIOUS AILMENTS ARE AN EYE OPENER. I QUESTIONED EATING UNPROCESSED HONEY. OF COURSE LIKING MY SWEETS I HAVE BEEN USING HONEY AND THE POUNDS ARE STILL COMING OFF.WITH ANYTHING MODERATION AND BALANCE IS THE KEY.
I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.I HAVE ONLY USED ONE RECIPE AS OF YET AND THE EVERYONES FAVORITE OATMEAL COOKIES WERE DELICIOUS, AND SURPRISINGLY FILLING.YEAST FREE COOKING TO ME IS BETTER THAN ANY DIET PILL, HEALTHIER AND A BETTER WAY TO GET TO A GOAL OF TOTAL HEALTH. THIS BOOK IS A MUST FOR ANYONE SERIOUS ABOUT THEIR YEAST INTOLERANCE, CANDIDA, CALL IT WHAT YOU WILL.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for people who like to try new things
"Feast Without Yeast" was necessary for me since not only do I have CRS but am also extremely allergic to yeast. However, because I was sick for three years before doctors realized what was wrong, my body (or my mind) learned todislike 'new' foods in fear of becoming ill.

This book is fantastic if you're not a picky eater, or if you don't like eating the same dozen items over and over again. I appreciated the depth in which the author discussed the reason he write this book, and am glad it's on my shelf for reference!

5-0 out of 5 stars Feast Without Yeast
I was so happy to find yummy salad dressings in here that will work for me.I have to cut down on fruit and eat more veggies, but I couldn't have vinegar or dairy. This pretty much eliminates all the store bought dressings.I like the garlic tomatoe dressing. It was really easy and very good. There are a lot of great receipes if you suffer from systemic yeast, although those who are very severe need to stay away from the receipes with clover honey in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars No longer a drudgery
This guide is so chock full of great information and useable recipes for the yeast free needy.More and more people are finding serious allergies to yeast, wheat, and milk, the very foods we find challenging to avoid.Lotsof wonderful recipes to try also.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good For Someone That Knows Something About Candida
Because if you DON'T know anything about Candida, you would not be able to avoid the pitfalls of the "avoid" foods that are mentioned in this book.

Proceed with caution and always listen to your own body where this book and its recipes are concerned. Not sure I would recommend it. ... Read more

When the marriage of Lady Di and Prince Charles fell apart, rumor had it part of the problem had to do with his gardening obsession. Gossip columns claimed Charles paid more attention to his gardens than his wife. The Garden at Highgrove takes readers on a tour of Charles's favorite creation--a maze-like garden surrounding the estate where he has primarily lived for the past 20 years. Various styles thrive within the boundaries of the property: wildflower meadows, formal hedgerows, outdoor rooms, carefully plotted tapestries of Queen of Night tulips. If Diana complained of neglect, Highgrove's landscape looks like it has been lavishly doted on. In one series of photos, we see the transformation of a large plot, viewed from the house, as it has been completely erased and re-created year to year. Who has time to complete and then entirely redo a garden on a regular basis? A prince, of course. Although the landscape glows with a vibrant, almost artificial green, Charles has long been a committed organic gardener. In the introduction he recalls the period when he came around to the cause of environmentalism. While driving through a declining English countryside in the 1960s and 1970s, "I remember longing to heal the countryside, to bind up its wounds and to reclothe it in its rightful form." The Garden at Highgrove will inspire gardeners, even those who don't live in palaces, who are looking for images of elegance and can't afford a staff to keep the hedges perfect. --Emily White ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This will join "Vita's Other World" on my bookshelf
This is a fabulous book and a treasure for garden lovers. It's nice for even amateur gardeners to have a selection of books on Sissinghurst, Giverny, and now Highgrove.I especially loved this book because of the unusual features including the stumpery, which is, quite simply, fantastic. The pictures are beautiful, and I even enjoy the winter scenes.(snow+England=Dickens for me!).The beautiful statues and sculptures are unique--and range from classical to modern;they all seem well-placed in this garden.I liked the way the Prince of Wales encouraged young stonemasons to give their castoffs to add to a wall that looks to be straight out of Alice in Wonderland.
It's true that not of all of us can live like a Prince, but it apparent that his Duchy employs a number of people--and it seems he has been more than generous in opening his garden to visitors and fundraisers. If I knew how beautiful and inspiring this book was--or even that there was such a book--I would have bought it earlier (big regret).I anticipate many years of delightful viewing.

4-0 out of 5 stars An inspiration and a teaching tool
If The Prince's 1993 book "Highgrove: An Experiment in Organic Gardening and Farming" was a manifesto disguised as a picture book, this title is, comfortingly, just what it appears to be: a guided tour of The Prince of Wales' very impressive gardens at his country seat, Highgrove.

Of course, there is still a strong bit of advocacy for an organic approach to gardening. But here, it doesn't edge into discussions of European agricultural policy or the historic despoiling of the British countryside. Instead, explanations of the organic method are an underlying, but essential, part of telling the garden's story

The narrative of how the garden has developed over two decades is an interesting one, and any gardener will enjoy and be inspired by the beautiful photography. And although few of us are able to garden on the Prince's scale, there is still an awful lot in here we can learn from, adapt to our own uses, or blatantly poach -- from simple decorating and arranging ideas to complex schemes of crop rotation or building construction. Helpfully, Highgrove's head gardener, David Howard, includes a chapter explaining how the transition from traditional gardening to organic approaches began, and some of the key techniques he employs and lessons he's learned. This is followed by six entire pages of listings of various types of plants cultivated in the different gardens and illustrated in each chapter. This, especially, may prove to be a handy resource for many readers.

If there's one noticeable drawback to this book, it's that there's no overall map or diagram showing where the various gardens are in relation to one another and the house. All I can think is that (assuming there is a reason for not including one) this may be for security purposes -- though that seems unlikely given the number of photographs already included. But after taking an otherwise thorough tour through the kitchen garden, the walled garden, the box garden, the fountain garden, across the terrace, past the sanctuary, under the rose arch, down the thyme walk (my favorite), along the serpentine hedge ... and all the rest, it would have been nice to have a comprehensive view of how it all fits together.

After having read the earlier title about this garden, it was nice to return six or seven years later (in publishing time) and see how it's all progressing. As the quote on the back cover says, "The Prince of Wales has created at Highgrove one of the most admired gardens in the country," and from philosophy to planning to execution, it's a garden that through this book, we can learn things from or, if we prefer, simply sit back and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read and convert
To see a garden of this scale and design run completely organically is one the best arguments for the banishment of chemical garden practices around.
This book is a great addition to any garden library, and if you do not already garden organically this may be the book that will convert you. That is assuming you have not readA Silent Spring.
Also makes a handsome gift, dispite all the photos ofPrince Charles looking very County.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful tour of Prince Charles Highgrove home gardens
I got this book earlier this year from Amazon U.K., wasn't out here yet, and really liked it. For your money you get a fairly recent photo tour of the grounds at Highrove, Prince Charles country home. There are a lot of pictures of plant life, details of some of the buildings and even some examples of outdoor sculpture. You even learn of a treehouse built for young Princes William & Harry as well as a garden seat given as a wedding present to the Prince and Princess of Wales (nice to know that the Princess hasn't been completely cleared away), two of many details that I haven't seen on television or read in some book or magazine article. I consider the book to be worth owning (just don't expect much gardening information), I just wish there could be a book tour of the interior of the house and other buildings to go with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!
I first read about Highgrove in a magazine article ( I think it was Town & Country) several years ago.I clipped the article and looked at the beautiful pictures again and again. When I saw the book, I knew I had to have it.When it arrived last week, I was not disappointed. The pictures of the gardens are beautiful, but the story of the garden's development is even more interesting. The prose is informative and easy to read.I also have a new respect for Prince Charles as a kindred gardener. While my gardens will never match the grand scale of Highgrove (my husband and I do all of the garden work on our five acres while working full time jobs), I have found lots of inspirational ideas that I plan to incorporate in my flower gardens. This book has already given me many hours of enjoyment and I know that I will turn to it whenever I need a gardening fix! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I wish this book had been written 10 years ago!

Founder and former owner of Office Plan, Inc.
MN SBA Small Business Person of the Year (1998)

I wish this book had been written 10 years ago! Not before I started my business; but after it was up and running and I knew it had possibilities for growth. It would have saved me a lot of time as I floundered around trying to learn about financing ventures. What seems so simple to answer now (Should I look for debt or equity financing?) took ages because my knowledge base was at Square One.

I read "Hurdles" because it addresses my current passion-helping women entrepreneurs who want to grow their businesses. But the book delivers so much more. It is, in fact, a compendium on both entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial financing. In order to explain their premises, the authors lay out solid information and data about entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship-males and females.

Because five researchers with strong academic credentials wrote it, I prepared myself for heavy reading. I was pleasantly surprised to find an eminently readable text. This book will be accessible to every entrepreneur trying to understand the money equation and growth strategies.

But I really think this book should be required reading for everyone who teaches in business school. In my own search for knowledge and skills to grow my business, I got my MBA. I am sad to say that none of my instructors understood entrepreneurship. Some knew they didn't know; most thought new ventures are smaller versions oflarge corporations. While this book would not be a substitute for a deeper understanding, it certainly would introduce them to the real differences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preparing for the Jumps
Reviewer: Gwen Richtermeyer, Ph.D.
Director, BRIDG,University of Missouri-Kansas City

If having knowledge about a situation better prepares you to be successful in that encounter, then Clearing the Hurdles is a must-read for women entrepreneurs eager to grow their businesses.Knowing what lies ahead, including the stereotypical beliefs that many in the venture capital industry hold about women, is a giant step in our knowledge base about why women continue to lag behind men in creating and sustaining high-growth businesses.

Broadly speaking, the hurdles to be faced can be clustered under the umbrella of capitals - human, social, and financial. The authors identify seven specific, major hurdles which speak to the entrepreneur's desire, education, training, management and financial knowledge and skills, strategic orientation, social and funding networks and financial resources.By reflecting upon her assets as well as understanding her areas for improvement, the woman entrepreneur will be better able to counter these hurdles as they come up in capitalizing and growing the business.

Clearing the Hurdles is not a passive book, however. In addition to mapping the terrain and identifying the hurdles, the authors provide illustrative vignettes that bring realism to the issues that are often missing from research-based academic work. And, the authors don't stop there; they provide workable strategies to help women entrepreneurs think through the issue and get over the hurdle.

As a gender scholar, I was particularly interested in whether and how the book would address gender bias. While the authors do not espouse a specific gender theory to guide their explanations of why women continue to face these specific hurdles, they suggest a number of possible gender theories, including social psychological, social construction, sociobiology, and social networks.By using these illustrative theories, the authors are able to debunk some of the myths concerning women and their associated capitals.

Clearing the Hurdles has value not only for women entrepreneurs, but for angels and venture capitalists that could benefit from seeing themselves through the eyes of their clients.By acknowledging their beliefs and understanding that they are instrumental in setting the bar heights, they will see more deals and create diversity in their portfolios that benefits all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Authors' credibility speaks volumes
Here, in one book, you will find the collective wisdom of five leading academics on the subject of women entrepreneurs and high growth businesses.
This incredibly well-researched book is the culmination of years of work on the gold standard of studies of women in business called "The Diana Project".
While women entrepreneurs have forged their own path and now account for over 50% of all new business start ups, issues still remain around perceptions and misconceptions of women in business by those who control purchasing and funding decisions. This book provides a road map for navigating these issues, while at the same time it holds a mirror up to everyone by laying out facts and case studies regarding the hurdles women face in breaking some of the last barriers to acheiving full economic parity. ... Read the Introduction

”The selected documents give a taste of Stanton’s often-contradictory ideas and successfully demonstrate how they evolved over time under the influence of contemporary intellectual movement. This work provides a solid basis for deeper investigations into Stanton’s role as a nineteenth-century feminist thinker.”
—Choice

”The editors are, there fore, successful in their aim: like her or not, Stanton’s ideas should be studied by any serious feminist, historian or student of democracy at large.”
—Feminist Review

“It is high time to respect Elizabeth Cady Stanton as a founding thinker and actor in the shaping of American society, politics, and ideas. This fascinating book enriches our understanding by giving us her own most eloquent words accompanied by the wise evaluations of some of our leading historians and writers.”—Linda K. Kerber, author of No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies:Women and the Obligations of Citizenship

"I picked up this book wondering what, if anything, even these formidable scholars could tell me about Elizabeth Cady Stanton that I hadn't already read. I put it down in awe—with a new appreciation of Stanton's brilliance, originality, and complexity as the intellectual genius behind the first wave of feminism. Her 19th century vision resonates for everyone in 21st century America."—Lynn Sherr, ABC News

More than one hundred years after her death, Elizabeth Cady Stanton still stands—along with her close friend Susan B. Anthony—as the major icon of the struggle for women's suffrage. In spite of this celebrity, Stanton's intellectual contributions have been largely overshadowed by the focus on her political activities, and she is yet to be recognized as one of the major thinkers of the nineteenth century.

Here, at long last, is a single volume exploring and presenting Stanton's thoughtful, original, lifelong inquiries into the nature, origins, range, and solutions of women's subordination. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Feminist as Thinker reintroduces, contextualizes, and critiques Stanton's numerous contributions to modern thought. It juxtaposes a selection of Stanton's own writings, many of them previously unavailable, with eight original essays by prominent historians and social theorists interrogating Stanton's views on such pressing social issues as religion, marriage, race, the self and community, and her place among leading nineteenth century feminist thinkers. Taken together, these essays and documents reveal the different facets, enduring insights, and fascinating contradictions of the work of one of the great thinkers of the feminist tradition.

Book Description
In a narrative gracefully combining intellectual and cultural history, Richard Cándida Smith unfolds the legacy of Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898), the poet who fathered the symbolist movement in poetry and art. The symbolists found themselves in the midst of the transition to a world in which new media devoured cultural products and delivered them to an ever-growing public. Their goal was to create and oversee a new elite culture, one that elevated poetry by removing it from a direct relationship to experience. Instead, symbolist poetry was dedicated to exploring discourse itself, and its practitioners to understanding how language shapes consciousness.
Cándida Smith investigates the intellectual context in which symbolists came to view artistic practice as a form of knowledge. He relates their work to psychology, especially the ideas of William James, and to language and the emergence of semantics. Through the lens of symbolism, he focuses on a variety of subjects: sexual liberation and the erotic, anarchism, utopianism, labor, and women's creative role. Paradoxically, the symbolists' reconfiguration of elite culture fit effectively into the modern commercial media. After Mallarmé was rescued from obscurity, symbolism became a valuable commodity, exported by France to America and elsewhere in the market-driven turn-of-the-century world. Mallarmé's Children traces not only how poets regarded their poetry and artists their art but also how the public learned to think in new ways about cultural work and to behave differently as a result. ... Book Description
Ever since her first photographic projects in the early 70s, Candida Höfer's primary interest has been public space: interiors such as libraries, lecture halls, lobbies, museums, club houses, and the urban landscape, with its public squares, streets, or zoos. Over the years people gradually disappeared from her pictures and yet the presence of humans became ever more manifest in her empty rooms—attested to by the absence of those for whom they were built or furnished. Foregoing any spectacular staging of the locations, Höfer imbues the emptiness with substance by a subtle attention to color. The silence thus instilled with a metaphysical quality lends a voice to the objects—above and beyond the eloquence of the furnishings or the pathos of the architecture. With 209 photographs, the present volume is the first major monograph on the œuvre of Candida Höfer, one of the greats of the current international photographic and art community. ...
