3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for $10, but doubtful if it is worth more
This book was useful for very general information, however a good bit of the information is freely available elsewhere (e.g. the Internet). The nicest thing about a book like this is that you feel that the knowledge within is more "certified" or more "professional" than the knowledge available online, as it is coming from a professional in the field.
The drawbacks of this book, however, are the poor editing which resulted in numerous typos and grammatical mistakes, giving the book a sloppy appearance.Hence, why I think the book would be worth perhaps $10, but not the full cover price of $14.95.I learned a little bit more than I all ready knew on the subject of carpal tunnel, but the book did not provide enough information as to make me feel that I did not need more resources. It is a fairly decent introduction to the topic of office ergonomics, but it will definitely leave you requiring further literature on the subject in order to gain more knowledge and insight into carpal tunnel and repetitive stress injuries. ... One of the world’s leading authorities on repetitive strain injury tells you how to prevent, treat, and recover from RSI

Living with repetitive strain injury (RSI) can be painful, exasperating, and devastating. If you’ve given up hope that there is any help for your symptoms, if you’ve tried medications, wrist splints, neck braces, and exercises--and have had only temporary relief--this book is for you. Dr. Emil Pascarelli, one of the world’s leading authorities on RSI, offers a comprehensive, prescriptive, practical, and long-awaited sequel to his bestselling Repetitive Strain Injury. You’ll read all about the advances in RSI diagnosis, treatment, and prevention that have occurred since the publication of the previous book. Inside is welcome advice on:

  • Recognizing the early signs and risk factors of RSI before they lead to a serious or debilitating condition
  • Finding the right doctor, the right diagnosis, and the right treatment
  • Preventing RSI using commonsense solutions such as keyboard techniques, posture, and workstation setup
  • Employing practical methods to regain the use of muscles, nerves, and tendons that have been damaged by RSI
  • Relieving not only the pain but also the emotional stress that so often accompanies RSI
  • Following specific warnings for musicians and other at-risk professionals

Because symptoms of RSI are rarely visible, health professionals, employers, and fellow employees often cannot understand what a sufferer of RSI is going through. This book is the best way to understand RSI and learn what you can do about it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some RSI-category problems not too well covered
I was hoping for a more complete discourse on Focal Dystonia, which is a pretty common musician's malady. There is some material, but I found a lot more in "Musicophilia" by Oliver Sack.Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain, Revised and Expanded Edition. The resources were pretty good overall, although it's also helpful to serarch the Internet on your own, because so many musicians and others are publishing their personal experiences and describing ways they found to deal with the problem - including what did not work. For instance, I found two guitarists who tried Botox treatment, one of the standard treatments, with very negative results.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This book covers the scientific and medical knowledge about repetitive strain injury. It discusses the symptoms and causes, and sometimes awareness itself can begin the healing process. It will motivate RSI sufferers to set up ergonomic workstations and to seek medical help when necessary. The book also mentions the emotional factors that can lead to RSI, which is something that not people are aware of.

The reason that I am giving it four stars, is that it does not cover enough treatment options for this condition. Fortunately, many physical therapists are familiar with massage therapy, stretching programs that could help relieve the symptoms. Overall, I think it is a good and informative read, but more research is necessary if someone wants to overcome this condition. Dora Farkas, Author, "The Smart Way to Your Ph.D.:200 Secrets from 100 Graduates"

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY helpful
A few months after starting a demanding programming job, my hands started hurting.A co-worker recommended an earlier version of this book. Actually, he said, "Leave work, go to the bookstore and buy and read it and don't come back until you finish it."

Pascarelli has a ton of information about RSI in this book, all of which makes sense. His main thesis is that RSI is easy to prevent and hard to cure, and his advice on how to avoid it is excellent.

If your hands are hurting, do like my co-worker said.Get this book right away and read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really excellent
I found this book to be easy to understand and very in depth. After reading it I went to my doctor with questions and I feel I was able to get more out of the expensive visit. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much of specific use to me.
A few good sketches of body parts, but the general information in this book was not of much use to me.I have put the book away, and will not likely look at it again.I think that the money would be better spent on other books of this nature that include more specifics. ... Read more

Do you want to overcome it but don't actually know much about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? If so, then you've found the right book!

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Is A Big Problem That Affects A Lot of People

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (or CTS) affects more people than you might think. Anyone who uses their hands and fingers a lot at work can get it.

CTS is caused by some kind of compression in the nerves in the wrist. Your nerves, veins, and ligaments all run through the carpal tunnel, and any pressure on the nerves can cause CTS.

Doctors don't really know exactly why it happens, but they have some ideas on who is affected.

The most commonly affected people are those that use their hands a lot, such as in cutting, typing, or anything that uses small hand held tools. Also, people who work in factories or mills can develop carpal tunnel syndrome as well.

The most common symptoms are tingling, numbness, and pain in the hands. You know you have CTS if it wakes you up at night.

Even though doctors don't know exactly what causes it yet, they do have some ideas on how to remedy it...But most people who have CTS don't even know that they have it, much less how to treat it.This means they could be trapped with a condition they don’t know that they can overcome.

The first step to helping yourself, or someone close to you, is to understand what you're dealing with. Then you can begin to understand the different treatment options.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and its treatments are not that complicated.

This book teaches you everything you need to know about CTS.

You'll discover:

- How To Understand Carpal Tunnel Syndrome…You must know what you're dealing with before you can actually deal with it.
- How To Diagnose CTS…So you can stop wondering and move forward.
- Non-Surgical Treatments...Get free without any surgery!

My husband and I have both benefitted from this book.We owned a copy for years that we would loan out to others which we finally ended up giving to a man who has terrible back and neck problems.I would also be interested to try the other Egoscue books and DVDs.
At one point in time my husband had a desk that moved a dozen ways, an ergonomic chair, and a wrist brace on both arms...the resulting back, neck, and arm pain from heavy computer usage was not getting any better. He got this book and, as long as he does the e-cises, he feels great.
We both highly recommend this book.

In general it's hard to trust books that focus on a single nutritional supplement or alternative-medicine therapy; the words breakthrough or miracle in a title are almost red flags saying, "Warning! No objectivity here!" There's no objectivity in The Pain Relief Breakthrough either, but for those interested in magnet therapy--the use of magnets to relieve localized pain--it doesn't matter. This is one of those therapies that have been practiced for centuries and defy any logical or medically sound explanation for how or why they work yet manage to make an impression on many of those who try them. Long rosters of professional athletes swear by magnet therapy. Julian Whitaker acknowledges that it is nearly impossible to prove that magnets work to relieve pain; he just earnestly believes that they do. The Pain Relief Breakthrough, then, gives a road map to those who want to try it. Whitaker and coauthor Brenda Adderly explain the history of magnet therapy, the different ways to use magnets, and how to combine magnet therapy with sound exercise and nutritional principles for a total wellness program. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Pain Relief Breakthrough: The Power of Magnets
Believe what you want. If you choose to use chemincals rather than your own body to heal itself, that's your choice. I like to stay away from chemicals (i.e. medication). So, this book has helped me in my search for better health.

I used to think magnetic and far infrared stuff was black magic until I read this book. I read this book because medicine did not help.

The concepts in this book are very simple. God created a planet with what we need to live healthily, magnetic engergy being one element. Then we surround ourselves with concrete and metal that blocks the natural engergies, and with electrical appliances that confuses our naturally frequencies, no wonder our health problems increase by leaps and bounds.

It's really all about energy. You eat to get energy, right? Well. OK, I do anyway. But it takes energy to digest food. So, get some instant energy so that your body can use it instantly to protect itself. The magnets have helped me so much I won't live without them now.

The book also mentions the benefits of far infrared. You will need to read "Reverse Aging" by Sang Whang to understand the benefits of that.

I wish I can find a doctor that knows when to apply magnetics, when to prescribe alkaline diet, and when to call for surgery -- combining every form of rememdy appropriately, instead of just prescribing chemicals.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading, generalized, and distorted.
These authors take the reader through a journey in time as well as history to set a foundation for the use of permanent magnets.Included are case studies, testimonials, wild assumptions, and generalities. This readerfelt like he was being conned by a very poor salesman. Some of theinformation may have been correct in it's original context. However, theauthors chose to present only part of the information in a general formatand discount other research which may have contrary information. This is ascary book, it has been a major seller and propaganda machine for companiesand individuals to promote sales of magnetic products at the risk of theindividual. This book has provided two sets of information for thisreader.First is that medical degrees and bibliographical citations do notalways make a credible book.Second, is this book provides a list ofpossible references with actual research information.I do not feel thatall of the information contained in this book is wrong, just misleading, incomplete and distorted. A more complete analysis with bothindications and contraindications for use can be found in "Magnetismand its effects on the living system". by Davis and Rawls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me start a retailing business

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the most informative book on Magnet Therapy!
Although we still don't know exactly how magnets work on the human body, we do know that 1) they do work, and 2) they can't hurt. This book does an absolutely fabulous job of enlightening chronic pain sufferers of an alternative, non-invasive, completely safe, effective method of relieving pain.Tell anyone who suffers from discomfort to read this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read on the subject.
Our family and friends have been using products described in this book for almost seven years. There is absolutely no doubt this age-old technology works!I like the simple straight forward approach the author used in explaining the history, applications, and theories on how these products work.We all use products every day, ie fax machines, cellular phones etc. that we don't understand exactly how they work....but they safely get the results we are looking for, and that's what counts.A very enlightening, informative book for anyone desiring a simple, safe, effective, and economical way to deal with some of the discomforts of life. ...
