5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book
Though there are sections about cataract surgery, this excellent book will probably appeal to a pretty limited group of Eye M.D.s due to the subspecialization. It is aimed at people performing anterior segment surgery, but who do corneal and refractive surgery as well.Useful tips include gluing corneal ulcers and perfs, PTK, and PRK and LASIK.There are also tips for full-thickness grafts.Very useful and highly recommended.I hope the authors come out with a new edition in the future. ... Book Description

The second volume of "Cataract and Refractive Surgery" in the Essentials in Ophthalmology series provides new, clinically relevant information on cataract and refractive surgery. The chapters discuss new techniques and technology with an emphasis on areas that are rapidly evolving and essential to sophisticated clinical practice. Topics include:

New IOL technology

Cataract surgery in challenging cases, such as loose zonules and small pupils

Advanced IOL calculation methods

Customized corneal refractive surgery, including LASIK, Epi-LASIK and femtosecond laser technology

Complications of excimer laser surgery and intraocular refractive lens technology (phakic IOLs, refractive lens exchange)

Corneal implants

Accommodative and pseudo-accommodative IOLs to correct presbyopia.

This list clearly reflects the expanding interrelationship of cataract and refractive surgery. Cataract patients expect outstanding refractive results with expanded visual capabilities and minimal complications. Likewise, many refractive surgical patients undergo lenticular surgical procedures and all ultimately expect near-perfect outcomes from their cataract procedures. This book will help clinicians provide the best results for their cataract and refractive surgical patients.

Book Description
Author Marios Kyriazis brings a wealth of medical expertise to one of the most important breakthroughs in recent times to help combat a disease called “senile cataract”, which affects one in five people over the age of fifty-five.

In the past, the only treatment available for this chronic condition was painful and potentially dangerous surgery to remove the cataract. Other treatments are now available, specifically, the new Russian breakthrough N-acetylcarnosine. In clinical trials, this treatment has shown dramatic and impressive results in treating age-related cataracts.

The Cataract Cure also covers other associated eye disorders including:

  • Glaucoma
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Infection of the cornea
  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Computer vision syndrome
  • Eyestrain
  • Blurred vision

The Cataract Cure is an essential resource for those cataract sufferers who are looking for an alternative treatment and want to avoid eye surgery.

The answer to curing senile cataract is clear—don’t lose sight of it!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Cataract Cure
"The Cataract Cure" by Marios Kyriazis, MD is a good if skimpy book, but I read the same book for free on the Internet four years ago.

The "cure" seems to have arrested the development of my cataracts. There may even be a slight improvement.I recommend the course advocated by Dr Kyriazis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
There is much to be learnt in this book, and I believe the reviewer (above) missed the very question about how long to use the eye-drops. It is answered in chapter 5, page 27 and the answer is 1 or 2 drops twice daily for 3 to 5 months, and then regularly at a lower dose long-term. This I presume means life, after all, as is explained, one can't expect a condition such as senile cataract, which is caused by declining anti-oxidants and increasing glycosylation (cross-linking) to improve with age. Therefore it is necessary to "top-up" and use these kinds of preventative measures to ensure that the cataract does not reappear, for as we age its condition is accerlerated. I for one am very pleased that there is now an option such as eye-drops for this condition, and Dr. Kyriazis does explain all the ins-and-outs of quality assurance etc. I would have liked more detail, but there is still lots of good information contained within.

3-0 out of 5 stars More.....
Very interesting book. Not much information on how long treatment should continue. Is it a life long therapy or what? The book left me wanting to know more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye drops for cataract
Dr. Kyriazis is a respected research physician in the UK and he has looked in detail at recent Russian research and interviewed the people behind clinical studies (that have been published in some medical journals), on the subject of a natural antioxidant- called N-acetylcarnosine (or Can-C). He presents it simply in "The Cataract Cure" so that everyone can understand. Can-C eye-drops have been found to slow and even resverse various forms of cataract and it represents a real breakthrough for this common problem. Dr. Kyriazis points out the pros and cons (apparently formula and purity are very important to obtain the original proven safety and efficacy), plus he also high-lights other natural substances that can assist in various age related eye disorders like gluacoma etc. I for one, will be looking to take advantage of this information to hopefully prevent the need for cataract surgery. ... Book Description
Our eyes are perhaps our most delicate and sensitive organs. They are at high risk for damage, especially from UV rays and other causes of free radical damage.

Cataracts afflict approximately 29% of Americans between 65 and 74 years of age.

Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of severe visual impairment in older Americans. Approximately 1.7 million have decreased vision and 100,000 are blind from the disease.

Glaucoma afflicts over 2 million and has caused blindness in 120,000 people in the United States. It is the leading cause of blindness in African-Americans.

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness for Americans under 60. Diabetics are 25 times more at risk for blindness than the generalpopulation.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO PROTECT YOUR EYES?

Bilberry and Lutein are clinically proven to help protect against, slow down the progression of and even help reverse these and other common vision disorders. Get the facts on these powerful anti-oxidant vision enhancers! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars biblberry info
This book has a valuable amount of information regarding the health benefits of bilberry extract. It explains the way bilberry helps diabetic retinopathy.I am hoping this information will also help a family member with macular degeneration. This small easy to read book tells dosage recommendations also.

1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere. This pub is awful.
Bilberry & Lutein is replete with words and phrases like "ischaemia reperfusion injury", "artiolar tone", and "vasomotion".But mostly they are not anywhere defined.Evidently the reader is supposed to dope out their meaning from context.Lotsa luck.

Again, there are sentences like, "Italian researchers also showed that bilberry anthocyanosides was beneficial against on ischaemia reperfusion injury...."
And there are facts like, "Corn is the vegetable with the highest quantity of lutein...".(According to the USDA database, spinach, kale, and various other kinds of greens contain many times as much lutein per unit weight as corn.)

I read a lot of health literature.I found Lutein & Bilberry exceedingly difficult to puzzle out, and to the extent I managed to do so, rather unreliable. It reads as though written by someone whose first language is not English, whose knowledge of the subject matter going in was zero, and whose "research" consisted of reading abstracts of journal articles and copying out sentences from them not too carefully.I find the pamphlet (at 28 pages of large-print text, it certainly is not a book) so bad that I have strong doubts about the genuineness of the three enthusiastic reviews that are standing as I write this one.Bilberry and lutein are undoubtedly good for you, but if you want the details, look elsewhere.

At the end of the pamphlet is a full-page, 30-item, list of titles (including Bilberry & Lutein), all but two by Beth Ley, offered for sale by BL Publications. For me, this author's name on any publication is sufficient reason to reject it without further consideration.

For info on the significance of Ms. Ley's "Ph. D.", see:
[...].

5-0 out of 5 stars Shortand complete!
This book is short, yet it covers all the essential information you need regarding Bilberry and Lutein for healthy eyes.
Ley covers it all in easy to understand language. A fast read for busy readers who don't want to be short-changed on information. The title of this book is a perfect summary of its contents.

5-0 out of 5 stars PROTECTING OUR EYES!
This is aneasy to read guide to learning about our eyes and how to safeguard our vision. This compact thirty-ninepage phamplet offers insight into Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Night Blindness,"Snow" Blindness, Antioxidants, Bilberry, Lutein, and nuturing properties contained in some foods.

Author Beth M. Ley, Ph.D,has given us the first step, the basics,in helping us to help ourselves. I especially liked the chapter on foods.Spinach, collard greens, leeks, peas, kiwi fruit, zucchini, corn, grapes, kale, squash, broccoli.I knew about carrots but not the other veggies and fruits.

Author Ley includes results ofstudies documenting those at risk for eye damage, and emphasizes that our eyes are our most delicate and sensitive organs. Protect them.

Read the book. It is clear, informative, helpful.

Book Description

Good vision is more than 20/20 on a Snellen visual acuity chart. The modern ophthalmologist understands that contrast sensitivity, near and distance vision, performance under light and dark conditions, and the brain’s interpretation of input from the sensory apparatus, are all important elements in patients’ quality of vision.

In Quality of Vision: Essential Optics for the Ophthalmic Surgeon, ophthalmologist and optics expert Dr. Jack T. Holladay explores the elements of vision that lie beyond Snellen testing. He explains the “whys” behind the machinery, instruments, technology, and procedures commonly used to assess vision before and after cataract and refractive surgery. With a better understanding of these tools, ophthalmologists can deliver better vision for their cataract and refractive surgery patients.

Quality of Vision addresses:
• Measuring and treating astigmatism in corneal and IOL surgery
• The importance of correcting spherical aberration in cataract and refractive surgery
• IOL calculations after refractive surgery
• Promising approaches to the correction of presbyopia
• Other practical topics the clinician can use every day

Recognized as the leader in ophthalmic optics, Dr. Holladay incorporates practical aspects of daily practice into each chapter as he expertly explains the scientific principles, mathematical formulas, and theories behind these important issues. Additionally, Quality of Vision includes numerous color illustrations to provide visual representations of the text’s key points.

Dr. Holladay discusses what’s on everyone’s mind:
• How to take the best measurements and perform the best calculations to ensure good outcomes in cataract and refractive surgery
• How neural adaptation can improve outcomes
• How today’s excimer laser systems deliver excellent optical correction, and why tomorrow’s systems will perform even better

Quality of Vision: Essential Optics for the Ophthalmic Surgeon is the most complete and practical reference for ophthalmologists looking to increase their understanding of optical physics and their ability to deliver good vision to their patients after cataract and refractive surgery.

Book Description
In continuing his argument that the Korean War was civil and revolutionary in character, Bruce Cumings examines the internal political-economic development of the two Korean states and the consequences, for Korea, of Cold War rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. He investigates the intense border fighting and internal political instability that preceded the Northern invasion and challenges the notion of sudden Soviet-sponsored intervention. "A decade ago, Bruce Cumings opened a new chapter in Korean War studies by arguing that this horrible conflict was above all a civil war. The Roaring of the Cataract is on a grander scale and narrated in a freer, more indignant voice than the first volume....there is no better camera obscura for those daring to revisit the bloodbaths that convulsed Korea at mid-century."--Far Eastern Economic Review ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Did Cumings write volume one?
In volume one we have nothing but crap from Cumings, and the book reads like socio-cultural and statistical study of Korea after the Japanese surrender, a lot of boring, dry facts.
But in volume 2 Cumings did a much better job on the politics of the war, though I find his distinction between rollback and containment a bit too forced.

You can forget about volume one, just buy volume 2 to get to one version of the causes, and consequences of the Korean War from a revisionist perspective, with which Cumings points out that the ROK was a puppet regime run by Japanese colonization era collaborationists and war time traitors (ethnic Korean police and Imperial Japanese Army memebrs), who were contantly raiding North Korea to provoke a war of unification, while the DPRK was run by communist partisans who were the only ones fighting the Japs (as well as the Chinese Nationalists in China), whose desire to unify Korea under her own brand of Stalinist communism, led her to respond to the constant provocations, raids and incursios by the ROKA across the 38th Parallel with a massve counterattack once her volunteers returned from China, and that the unexpected collapse of the ROKA in turn led to a full scale invasion on her own initiative. There are food for thought in Volume 2 about the duplicity, complicity and treachery of the ROK, the Chinese natioalist, McArthur and the US Army and CIT in enlisting the defeated Japs to re-invade China and Korea, all in the name of democracy!

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB - *THE* GUIDE TO THE ORIGINS OF THIS WAR
It is with appreciation and gratitude that I approach scholars like Bruce Cumings.Courageous, meticulous, and honest, Cumings examines in painstaking detail the societal structure of the Korean state from the end of the Yi Choson dynasty to the role Korea played as a component of the Japanese empire to the various political movements that came to the surface upon Japan's defeat.

Cumings illustrates the existence of true patriots - nationalists who had never collaborated with the occupying Japanese colonizers - who organized a People's Republic which, despite its leftist leanings, did not have in its agenda the establishment of a totalitarian dictatorship. These individuals wanted to establish an independent Korea for Koreans and sadly they were obstructed by corrupt, moneyed rightists whose ancestors came from the entrenched landlord/yangban class which had always occupied the highest strata of traditional Korean society - but who had also maintained their privileges by collaborating with the hated Japanese invaders.

And unbeknownst to so many in America, Cumings explains the history of the Soviet-American division of the peninsula - trusteeship, the attitudes by Soviet and American military authorities towards the established People's Republic, the Moscow accords.

It is not without truth that to this day, North Korea calls the Seoul regime "US imperialists' puppets."Kim Il Sung rose to power thanks to Soviet backing and by eliminating rivals, many of who had also spent their lives fighting Japan, and the cult of personality that North Korea is today is not what the leaders of the Korean People's Republic wanted for their people.

This book is a MUST for anyone who wants more than a cursory and cosmetic grasp of the events that unfolded in Korea in 1950.I will soon order volume 2!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Students of Modern Korean History
I was an East Asian Studies (focus on Korea) at Harvard. Both Volumes on the Origins of the Korean War by Bruce Cumings are absolute prerequisites to understand and study this unfortunate part of Korean history.I note how some reviewers trashed the book because they think it is "revisionist leftist nonsense" - I believe it is a matter of the reader not liking what actually happened.Prof. Cumings scholarship is impeccable. His tendency to let his passion and compassion for the Korean people show in his writing has earned him the distrust of some. However, scholars in Korean studies - of whatever political persuasion - hail these volumes as masterpieces of scholarship and writing. Both volumes (outrageously priced as they are) are absolute must haves for any library that has a section on Korean history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book.
It is my pleasure to emphatically claim
that Mr Cummings have done an outstanding
research job regarding what really
happened before the Korean War.This
monumental work sheds light into a covered
part of history that many people are
unaware of.Having read this book,
I'm really doubtfull about all the conservative
claims that N. Korea was the sole
culprit of the War.

No Korean history is complete without this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly, the greatest education about Korea you can get.
This is simply the quintessential text on Korea in the 20th century. Both Volume I and Volume II are necessary additions to ANY university library. It is THE book to read for any and all people whose personal or professional lives deal with Korea or Koreans.Reading both volumes is a task, but there is something for everyone in this work, even if you just skip around. It is supported by heavy use of primary documentation and the sources are well cited. There are simply no sources on Korean history, society and politcs that do better (and more) than this work.Highly recommended! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I wish there was a book this thorough and readable for every section of the Colorado.
"Cataract Canyon" is an incredibly readable treasure of book, disguised by its subtitle and size as something of a textbook. But it's not just a volume of research material--though it does have excellent accounts of the area's geology, history, and ecological controversy. It's also an incredibly gripping read for anyone who loves the Colorado River, who loves rivers in general, or who loves the West.It tells the story of Cataract Canyon as one might tell an exciting narrative.
Read this book, and then visit Cataract Canyon for yourself. It will be like reading the biography of a famous historic figure, then realizing that person (although ancient) is still alive, then meeting that person and finding out she's more amazing than even the best book could ever tell.
This is an excellent, well-written, scrupulously researched book that no fan of the Colorado Plateau should be without. It contains many excellent now-and-then photos, great accounts of historical figures such as Denis Julien, and a terrific chapter on the portion of Cataract Canyon that's usually submerged beneath Lake Powell.Buy it, buy it, buy it.
(Note however that Robert Webb is only one of the book's three authors; the others include John Weisheit, Conservation Director for the environmental group Living Rivers.) ... Read more

Book Description
Cataract Surgery in Complicated Cases by Lucio Buratto, Robert H. Osher, and Samuel Masket is a text that every cataract surgeon needs. It is widely known that cases of "normal" cataracts are decreasing, while incidences of "difficult" cases are increasing greatly. This trend negates the standard approach to cataract surgery and requires a more thorough examination of practical and innovative surgical options. This book was designed to provide extensive coverage of all of these options. Complicated cases require additional preparation, and this book aims to provide surgeons with all of the information necessary to treat these difficult cases. Through personal techniques provided by more than 50 expert international surgeons, this extensive resource provides coverage of the necessary steps to employ when complex situations arise.

Cataract Surgery in Complicated Cases is essential to every surgeon, not only because of its comprehensive coverage of challenging cases, but also because of the authors' extensive knowledge of cataract surgery. This book will help the surgeon achieve extremely positive results by teaching safety and practical techniques. With over 600 photographs illustrating these complicated situations, the authors will take you step-by-step through each possible surgical approach.
