Book Description
On Risthmus, the Landing Pact was law: felines were off limits. And for ten years Tsia, the rogue guide, had tried to honor that Pact and ignore the irresistible pull of her forbidden link to the cats.

For ten years, she had hidden among the mercenaries. But now her latest mission was going awry. A crash landing was followed by one deadly mishap after another. The cougar cub Tsia had rescued from a storm refused to leave her -- even when she tried to send it away.

Tsia could save the mission -- if she deliberately broke the Landing Pact to enter the mind of the cat and command his help. But if she was found out, punishment would be the loss of her biogate, her telepathic link with the felines. Her past was about to catch up with her, and only if she faced it -- and used it -- could she hope to forge a new future...with the cats! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Call of the Cat
In Cat Scratch fever we learn about the psycic links between the colonists and the animals and the promise to the cats.Tsia's guide link unfortunately is to the cats.Cataract takes place ten years later, she has avoided using her link but now the mercenaries she has been hiding out among are in trouble and her link to the cats is helpful, plus has been useful to one of the cats in giving her the ability to help it.I can't wait for the third installment to the cat series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent keeps you at the edge of your seat
A great bok Tara really puts her heart and soul into her writing.Keeps you curious the whole time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to comprehend unless read several times.
Unless you've read previous books in her "cat" series, it's difficult to grasp what's going on [I haven't read any by her except for all of the Wolf books].Otherwise, detail abounds and the *telepathy* theme is marvelous [as well as the Ixia, which I didn't fully understand at first...read the book] ... Editorial Review

Book Description
Antioxidant Vitamins and Health is about the role played by antioxidant nutrients in the prevention of chronic degenerative diseases and conditions. The book begins with some background on free radicals, the reactive oxygen species generated in vivo, then describes the mechanism of antioxidation and the antioxidant defenses of humans. Each of the succeeding chapters covers a main topic: cardiovascular disease, cancer, cataracts, and aging. The most important epidemiological studies carried out over the past two decades are thoroughly discussed and compared. The results are summarized in a concluding chapter, and an extensive list of references is provided. The book will appeal to researchers in the fields of antioxidants, cardiovascular disease, cancer, cataracts, and aging; nutritional scientists; and students in these disciplines. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good survey of the literature
An objective discussion of dietary and supplemented antioxidants with regards to major body systems and diseases, including ageing. The major clinical trials on humans are covered, but there is also quite a bit on animal studies. The author worked at Roche, so perhaps it is not surprising that the conclusions make a case for dietary supplements, but to his credit, the author considers studies that are not supportive or are ambiguous. His comment on the weaknesses of some studies are sensible.Because the book covers a wide swath--cardiovasculardisease, cancer, cataract, and aging--no one topic is treated in extraordinary depth, although the chapter on cataracts is a chapter that one finds in comparable books.

The book is reasonably priced and the presentation is clear. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must forpersons having cataract surgery
I strongly recommend this book for anyone considering cataract surgery. I wish I had read it before having surgery, I would have had a much better idea of what was going on. The illustrations are very clear and the writers sense of humor is appreciated. Also, the short history of cataract surgerymakes one feel lucky to be living today with surgeons having so manysophisticated tools. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Wordy Poetry
Of course, poetry is all words and pictures in your mind... but my opinion is that young children will have trouble with this book simply because it uses words like "moreover," "anon," "laureate," "vocation," and many others that most adults would have to look up in a dictionary to fully understand.

One deliciously clever part of this book is that the text changes as the water flows over a waterfall. (You have to turn the book to read it, as the waterfall goes across the pages from left to right and the words are turned sideways to follow the flow!

If you're looking for a beautifully descriptive poem with lots of old English language, this is perfect. The illustrations are lovely and the poem itself is wonderful... but children may need quite a bit of explanation and assistance if they were to read or listen to this book.

As a teacher, I'd say a practical use might be to give sections of this poem to children (older grades) and have them practice their context clue and dictionary skills to figure out what the words mean. ... Read more

Book Description
Cataract Surgery CD-ROM: The State of the Art provides a comprehensive look at this ever-challenging procedure by surgical experts, led by world renowned surgeon, Dr. I. Howard Fine.

Drs. Fine, Packer and Hoffman have carefully selected 28 different surgical videos demonstrating techniques such as IOL Insertion, Stromal Hydration, Limbal Relaxing Incisions, and Capsular Tension Ring and presented them in a straightforward fashion for the viewer to get the maximum exposure to each procedure. Invaluable audio narration follows each step of every procedure, and is spoken by the authors themselves, providing the user with accurate knowledge of what is happening. The authors describe their approach to all aspects of lenticular surgery including clear lensectomy, the use of power modulations and why they are important, as well as insight on how lowering the total amount of energy into the eye has resulted in clearer corneas and faster and better uncorrected visual activity in the intermediate postoperative period. Their technique for routine cataract surgery shows why it can also be used in any difficult or challenging case without any alteration in technique. The authors’ techniques are easy to emulate because they don’t involve any intraocular gymnastics and are uniform and consistent in all instances. This CD-ROM gives a unified, consistent approach to lens surgery that is useful in each and every situation an ophthalmologist will face.

Some Procedures Include:

I. Howard Fine's Choo Choo Chop & Flip Phaco Techniques Cortical Cleaving Hydrodissection Limbal Relaxing Incisions Staining the Capsules with Vital Dyes Piggyback IOLs

Book Description
This book has been created for patients who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to cataract surgery (also cataract extraction; cataract removal), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on cataract surgery. Given patients' increasing sophistication in using the Internet, abundant references to reliable Internet-based resources are provided throughout this sourcebook. Where possible, guidance is provided on how to obtain free-of-charge, primary research results as well as more detailed information via the Internet. E-book and electronic versions of this sourcebook are fully interactive with each of the Internet sites mentioned (clicking on a hyperlink automatically opens your browser to the site indicated). Hard-copy users of this sourcebook can type cited Web addresses directly into their browsers to obtain access to the corresponding sites. In addition to extensive references accessible via the Internet, chapters include glossaries of technical or uncommon terms. ... Read more
