5-0 out of 5 stars Shelley Nixon's poetry
I am priviledged to know Shelley and to work with her in a volunteer theater group to which we both belong.Shelley is one of the most uplifting, positive people I have ever met.She meets her disability and its challenges without hesitation every day.Shelley's poetry is often featured in the performances that the group does, and her writings are always greeted enthusiastically by the audience. The poetry in this book is honest, forthright and does not gloss over the hardships of being disabled.Instead, Shelley's book and her life offer other people a view of someone who deals realistically with CP every day, and does not let the disability hold her back from living her life fully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quietly moving bio of a young woman
Shelley Nixon was born with Cerebral Palsy. Many readers will expect an informative look at CP, along with an emotional description of dealing with a disability.

Instead, we get a straightforward look at a young woman looking back on her childhood and adolescence. Shelley's CP is, of course, the catalyst for a lot of her life's events, but she refuses to devote her autobiography to her disability. Instead, she writes, with funny and honest prose, about childhood, friendships, family, crushes, and art - all things important to her. She doesn't shy away from descriptions about her physical limitations and numerous surgeries (and the emotional struggles of dealing with her disability), but she refuses to be defined by Cerebral Palsy, in both her book and her life. She may not be as introspective in "From Where I Sit" as you might like, but insight can be found in her poetry, particularly "A Tree For Me."

Shelley Nixon may one day write a book about her disability, but first, she chose to write about herself. That alone is a strong statement about embracing one's own abilities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I am a senior Rehab major at Indiana University of PA and I have had over 5 years of experience working with people with CP and other disabilities. I started off having to read this book for a class and loved it! I could not put it down!! This book is an excellent source for anyone who may or who already does work with people with CP. It would also be good for people with CP because it shows everything she had to overcome throughout her life and now she has written a book when many people said she couldn't!! It allows you to view her through her point of view without prejudice and discrimination. What Shelley writes about is everything i have seen with persons with quadriplegic CP.This is not a depressing book. It is inspirational and very eye opening.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sad portrayal of life with cp, lacking positive outlook
Based on the positive reviews I read here, I bought two copies, hoping to give one to a young girl with cp, struggling to cope.I was looking for a positive role model for her, someone with a hopeful outlook, who had developed as a person despite their disability. This book is not that.I will not give it to this girl, or give to other students to read.I found this book a very sad autobiography of a girl's life.It was mostly a chronological listing of her life's events. She only touched on the subject of her emotional struggle with cp, but she gives no advice to others in her shoes, leaving the reader to wonder if she herself has emotionally come to grips with her disability. Not a book of success despite adversity that would serve as a model for others in similar circumstances.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-written, strong book
Shelley's story is emotional without being maudlin, funny without being silly, and serious without being dry. What you get from this book is a picture of a unique person who has a bunch of characteristics, including, but not only, Cerebral Palsy.I read it to try to understand what my daughter will go through as she grows up with Cerebral Palsy.Shelley is a strong and talented woman and the book reflects that.I hope my daughter grows up as well! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Review by Frederick S. Cramer, M.D.
Dr. Richard Neubauer has created a must-read for all parents, family members and other caregivers of children with cerebral palsy or other brain injury. He has taken a complex medical subject and explained it such that people without specific medical training can understand. This book is equally suited to readers interested in learning more about either cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury, with both topics handled well and without confusion.Cerebral palsy is a multi-factorial term for hypoxic brain injury in the peri-birth time period.i.e. in-utero or during the birth process, something causes the interruption of the normal blood supply and oxygen to the brain of the baby. The other type of brain injury in the young child is traumatic - e.g. near drowning, suffocation or motor vehicle/bicycle accident.

"Hyperbaric Oxygenation for Cerebral Palsy and the Brain-Injured Child" excels in meeting one of the most urgent needs of a parent with a recently injured child - the need for factual credible medical information.Dr. Neubauer includes a clear discussion of the underlying physiology of the brain and how it works, followed by the mechanics of cerebral plasy and brain injury that provides a solid foundation for later discussions related to treatment. He then introduces a new and sophisticated diagnostic technique called Single Photon Emission Computer Tomography (SPECT).SPECT scanning is of particular interest with regard to brain-injured children because it represents an opportunity to objectively access brain function in patients with cerebral palsy or brain injury - a capability that adds significant science to what might otherwise be simply anecdotal observations of patient improvement.

It is with this background that Dr. Neubauer provides readers with the foundation to understand the principle thesis of his book - that intermittent, high-dose oxygen administered as a drug directly addresses the pathophysiology of brain injury, leading to sometimes rearkable improvements in brain function and quality of life.He explains the medical basis for Hyperbaric Oxygenation Therapy (HBOT), along with a thorough discussion of why HBO can, and does in his opinion, fundamentally improve brain function in children with cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury.Dr. Neubauer concludes with a pragmatic discussion of costs, insurance, acceptance by the medical community at large, and how to find a HBOT center that is skilled in the treatment of children with cerebral palsy or brain injury.

While this book is not intended as an academic discourse on the subject of cerebral palsy and traumatic brain injury, Dr Neubauer provides a realistic perspective that not every patient will respond to HBOT.He notes that each child is different and only 70-80% can be expected to respond favorably. This is why SPECT scan is stressed as an objective technique for the parents to realize whether there is any hope for their child. For example, if the SPECT scan does not improve after six months of treatment, the child is not likely to respond.

Lastly, the book also includes several examples of clinical success with various children, with perhaps the most compelling being Rebecca Nemeth written by her father.Mr. Nemeth shares his experience of fear and frustration, along with the hope and joy realized through the improved quality of life his daughter has experienced following HBOT.

"Hyperbaric Oxygenation for Cerebral Palsy and the Brain-Injured Child" promises to remain the defining book for parents for many years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great addition to Traditional Therapy
I bought the book, well aware that the Title is a bit "overstated".I enjoy refering to it and comparing what our physical therapist do, to help my daughter IMPROVE her current situation.I think that book has great illustrations, and is a fun "Work out routine" for us to do at home.Don't be fooled by the title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Very clearly written and easy to read. This is the first book I have bought on this subject that has an exercise plan written out, clear picturese of all the exercises, detailed descriptions and reasons for doing the exercises. The title of the book is misleading since cerebral palsy has to be managed, not cured. The book indicates that a lot of hard work is required to improve thelife of a child with CP.This book is excellent for parents and I highly recommend it.I have purchased another copy for another parent of a child with CP.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fresh Approach
I have not yet mentioned that I bought this book to any one in the "medical establishment" because the standard dogma is that CP can't be cured.Because of another review, I decided it was worth giving it a try and after a month and not even having attempted all the exercises, I too am finding that the exercises are helping to loosen up my stiff son.

The book has 56 exercises divided into three parts: 1) functional training lying mostly face up, 2) functional training lying mostly face down, and 3) functional training centered on movement. Some of the exercises seem and can be difficult even for someone who doesn't have cerebral palsy but I keep trying them and making gradual progress. All of the exercises are accompanied by multiple illustrations. However, I still have questions about some of the exercises and also about general approaches to take and would love to find a chat room devoted to the ATA method to share ideas and questions with others. Some of the exercises rely on nerve and stimulus points both to help relax the patient as well as to stimulate the patient into movement. The exercises have several levels: passive in which the patient's body is moved entirely by the trainer, continuity in which the patient is stimulated into movement and guided by the trainer, and autonomy in which the patient does the movement based on the instructions of the trainer.

Whether it completely delivers or not, this book presents a positive encouraging approach toward dealing with cerebral palsy.I may not be doing it full justice, but I understand it's basic premise is that the brain does regenerate and heal itself same as other parts of the body do and that the body is also programmed for development in specific sequences that need to be respected.Consequently, with proper training the brain can be helped to rewire itself in such a way that the problems in motor control caused by brain damage can be avoided and in some cases reversed if caught early enough. There are enough studies out there that indicate the brain is more versatile/plastic then we think.I think Mr. Ata offers a fresh approach at working with CP that respects the root of the problem: poor motor control is caused by a damaged nervous system.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great additional therapy program
I really liked this book.It has been a great tool by helping me learn a great deal about cerebral palsy. My son has cerebral palsy and had very tight muscles, the excersizes in this book have really loosened him up.He has progressed a lot while I have been using this book, and he loves to do the excersizes in it.The drawings, charts, and explanations in this book are great and very helpful. The book is rather expensive, but it is a BIG book and very thorough.I would recomend it to anyone with a child with cerebral palsy if you have some extra money. ... I ordered this book from the UK and it was sent promptly to me in good condition. The packaging was secure and I am very happy with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written and illustrated book!
This book is wonderfully written and illustrated. As a parent, I was able to capture the heart and beauty this story offered. Danielle Hiner did a fantastic job of setting for us, a short story that allowed the reader into a glimpse of a child's mind so innocent and pure. A book like this should be introduced into every classroom. To teach our children sensitivity and compassion for those who may look different, but deep in their hearts, every child has the same desire...to be like every other child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Mommy, Can I Play With Tommy? By Danielle Hiner
"Mommy, Can I Play With Tommy?" is a story about a beautiful five-year-old boy named Joey with Cerebral Palsy. While watching the other children playing a game of tag on the school playground Joey is not sure he will fit in with the other children. A boy named Tommy takes him under his wing and made Joey feel just like everyone else.
Danielle Hiner has created a truly touching story not only for children but also for everyone who has any compassion for children. Danielle leaves the reader with a moral to the story but as I read the book I came up with my own. To the world you are only one person but to one person you can mean the world. This is a story of how one person can make a world of difference in someone's life, especially a child. I'm sure everyone who reads this wonderful story will come up with his own moral to the story.
The book is fully color illustrated and each picture has a story to tell in itself.
"Mommy, Can I Play With Tommy?" is a book with a lesson to learn that any parent or grandparent would be proud to share with their own children and grandchildren.

Description:
The aim of the study was to investigate associations between the severity of motor limitations, cognitive difficulties, language and motor speech problems in children with cerebral palsy. Also, the predictive power of neonatal cranial ultrasound findings on later outcome was investigated. For this purpose, 36 children (age range 1 year 10 months to 9 years 0 months) with cerebral palsy due to premature birth and white-matter damage (periventricular leukomalacia) participated in the study. Twenty-two children (62%) had an intelligence level above 70. One-half of this group exhibited motor speech problems. Children with an intelligence level below 70 (n=14, 38%) showed problems in motor speech skills as well as in verbal expressive and comprehensive skills. Neonatal cranial ultrasonography findings were moderately associated with the severity of functional motor limitations. Learning outcomes: Readers will be able to: (1) describe different hypotheses regarding the relationship between language, speech, intelligence level and severity of cerebral palsy, (2) discuss how intelligence and functional motor limitations impact language and speech performance for children with cerebral palsy and (3) discuss the predictability of the ultrasound methodology. ... Book Description
The worlds of the disabled and the "normal" often cross paths—and not always pleasantly. But just think how much better we'd get along if we ALL thought of ourselves as disabled . . .

Like the rest of the world, I have to deal with my strengths and weaknesses in my own unique manner. Many people look at the amount of accomplishments I have managed to achieve in my short life and are amazed that someone who is disabled could have done so much.

Yet I am constantly thinking of how much more there is to do! And if I sat around and spent all of my precious time labeling myself with words like "disabled" and "handicapped," I'd be too busy to ever do anything productive. That is why I say that, in a way, we are ALL disabled. But how?

Don't we all have some area in which we need help?

What about the computer illiterate who panics every time his computer makes a noise, opens an extra window, sends him an "error" message, crashes, or freezes up? In today's technological age, this is definitely a disability that is likely to affect his job performance, his level of proficiency, and perhaps even the security of his very career.

What about the person with extremely poor vision who years to be a fighter pilot, or fly domestic flights for United or Delta? Without corrective surgery, and perhaps even with it, their hopes of achieving their dreams are less than zero.

And what about the would-be athlete who wants nothing less in life than to be an Olympic athlete, a star quarterback, or a diva figure skater—but who just doesn't have the physical skills needed to achieve his or her dreams? After all, professional sports requires more than just heart, drive, and desire. It requires coordination, hand-to-eye skills, visual acuity, and in many cases, very specific physical requirements. After all, it would be difficult for a 6'4", 220-pound woman to be a petite figure skater, while it would be almost impossible for a 5'2", 12-pound man to be a defensive lineman for the New York Jets—or the next Michael Jordan!

Vision, hearing, and coordination problems. Weight, height, physical fitness. Intelligence, IQ, the money to go to a good college. Nationality, race, religion. Fear, weakness, depression. All of these, and the list goes on and on, are disabilities of some sort. Hidden though they may be, and not labeled a specific name or definition such as cerebral palsy, they are nonetheless real and legitimate disabilities that people face on a day-to-day basis.

My best friend in college once compared me to someone that was too short to reach the top shelf in the kitchen. She said that my shakes and the help I needed was no different than the short person who needed help reaching the top shelf. And she was right.

All of us have weakness that must be dealt with, just like my shakes and someone else's shortness. When this happens, a disability occurs. Plain and simple. We all have them, we all deal with them, it's a part of life. It's how we react to those disabilities, it's how we break down the barriers they present, or work our way around them, over them, or through them, that determines how big or little those disabilities are. ... "My own path to success is not finished. I have many more dreams and goals to obtain before crossing the finish line. This is likely to be the same for you. Whether your dreams are for financial success, starting a new business, or just getting a job and starting your own family, no one can determine whether you've won or lost in this magical game of life-except yourself."
~ Rob Pritts, FROM CP TO CPA

Despite your disability, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Despite your disability, you are a valuable and contributing member of society. Despite your disability, you are a unique and special individual the likes of which the world has never seen. Sound to good to be true? It isn't. That's the feeling you'll get while reading Rob Pritts' triumphant new self-help book, FROM CP TO CPA: One Man's Triumph over Cerebral Palsy.

As a popular and inspiring motivational speaker on the subject of disability awareness, Rob Pritts makes no apologies for the fact the he has cerebral palsy. And why should he? From the start, Rob has never let CP slow him down or throw up barriers in the way of his many hopes and dreams. From a self-contained Special Education classroom to the University of Illinois, where Rob obtained a Bachelor of Science degree, to obtaining the CPA certification, Rob's experiences have allowed him to excel into what his former teachers call a "Special Ed Success Story!"

And now that Rob has excelled at his life's ambitions, he is eager to share his positive philosophy with other people with disabilities in his new book: FROM CP TO CPA: One Man's Triumph Over Cerebral Palsy!

From special education teachers to their students, from corporate CEOs to frustrated housewives, from churches to colleges, Rob's message is the same: Don't be discouraged by the cards you've been dealt. Instead, make sure you've always got a winning hand by facing each day with a positive mental attitude-and a humble sense of gratitude.

Rob mixes personal stories of his life as a disabled child, student, graduate, and professional CPA with easy-to-digest lessons aimed at awakening the disability in us all. Followed by evocative journal prompts, FROM CP TO CPA becomes more than just a book, it evolves into an interactive journey through our very souls.

Reading Rob's book is not always easy. Whether you're disabled, or someone without a disability, facing up to your own misconceived notions or perhaps even prejudices is a direct result of Rob's illuminating prose and self-effacing humor. Yet I dare you to walk away from this book uninspired, and as such it makes the perfect tool for facing life more positively when you've been feeling down or uninspired.

Book Description
A practical guide to the many simple things that can be done to help children with cerebral palsy grow and develop in the best possible way. Addressed to the mid-level rehabilitation worker, the manual describes training activities, to be performed with the assistance of family members, that promote the child's mobility, self-care, and independence. Using simple text and abundant illustrations, the manual also provides advice on the early detection of cerebral palsy and the assessment of a child's developmental level. Information ranges from a list of questions frequently asked by families, to instructions for constructing special seats and tables from cardboard boxes, to detailed guidelines for the assessment and treatment of contractures.Proposed exercises and activities are in line with the need to make training practical and relevant to family life, a part of the daily routine, and fun for the child. Emphasizing the need to prevent deformities as well as to promote development, the manual also shows how to construct splints and other equipment using local, readily available materials. Particular attention is given to the importance of good handling and positioning of the child's body. ... Read more
