As if the itching and fever of chicken pox isn't bad enough, poor littleGoldie Locks can't visit with her friends Red Riding Hood and Bo Peep, and heryounger brother is positively ruthless in his teasing. What's a fairy tale galto do? Wait for Bro's karmic comeuppance, that's what. And if the law oftraveling germs holds true, the uppance will come quickly.

Erin Dealey's rhyming lark plays havoc with favorite storybook characters, fromHenny Penny to Jack (Goldie's brother calls out the window: "Jack, be nimble!Jack, be quick! / Come and see! My sister's sick!"). Illustrator HanakoWakiyama's Goldie Locks, with her big, spotted face and tiny blonde braids, isthe picture of wretchedness, while her naughty tow-headed sibling is fiendish inhis bursting good health (for now, anyway). The distinctive artwork in retroreds and oranges is chock-full of witty details and child-friendly perspectives.Young readers who have suffered at the hands of bratty brothers and sisters willidentify immediately with Goldie's frustration and cheer when Little Brotherfinally gets his just and speckled deserts. 5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Children's Book
This book is so clever! The book is fun to read b/c it rhymes, it has characters from nursery rhymes and it gives kids an introduction into the world of chickenpox. This book is a familiy favorite!

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!!
Me and my almost 3 year old daughter LOVE this book. She's never had the chicken pox, but even so, it's such great writing and cool pictures! I highly recomend it. My daughter begs me to read it to her every night! I wish the author/illustrater would team up for more books like this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book is so cute. Goldie Locks has chicken pox and her little brother won't leave her alone. There are some familiar faces that drop by to check on Goldie and brother gets a little bit jealous.
Mamma Bear assures Goldie's mom that Baby Bear is fine because bears can't get chicken pox. Henny Penny comes by to let the Lock's that the sky is falling. Jack Be Nimble wants to play with Goldie but her dad doesn't think it's such a good idea. Little Bo Peep has stopped by to see if she can find her sheep and Little Red Riding Hood wants some company on the way to her grandmother's house.
It is a very contemporary book with humor and intrigue. Goldie's brother just can't stop teasing her. He wants to connect her dots and wants to know why she can have ice cream and treats and he can't. At the end of the story however, he ends up with some very mysterious spots.
This poem will make children laugh and get them excited because they will recognize other characters form other nursery rhymes. They will also be able to relate to Goldie if they have ever had chicken pox themselves. It is a very cute and simply entertaining story for children to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
My daughter received this as a Christmas gift when she was 4.Two years later it is still an absolute favorite in our house. Her younger sisters love it but she insists on keeping it in her room.It is a funny, well-written story that would stand out on its own, but the illustrations make it even better.I love how Ms. Dealey brings in the other characters, making it seem like all the characters are part of a big storybook world, where Henny Penny plays with Baby Bear and Little Red Riding Hood!Buy the book....you will be glad you spent the money!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story - Excellent Illustrations
Goldie Locks has Chicken Pox is a well-written, funny story that I would recommend every parent read to their child when they have Chicken Pox to keep their mind off of them. One thing I really liked about this book was that it mentions other children's stories like Henny Penny, Little Red Riding Hood and Little Bo Peep. My very favourite part was the illustration that went with this line:
"Let's Connect them!" shouted Brother.

Erin Dealey and Hanako Wakiyama did a very good job together on this book. The illustrations are hilarious. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Fun Primer - a review of "Itchy, Itchy Chicken Pox"
I don't know about yours, but my children are fascinated by the old fashion childhood diseases like Chicken Pox and Measles.Go figure-- but somehow it rates right up there with loosing your teeth. As a consequence, this book is very popular at our house. In fact, my newly turned 5 y.o. son made his dad and I read it with him four times last night.

As a primer it has a lot going for it.There's rhyme and pictures to give 'clues' as to what the words might be.And the print is large, well spaced for new readers, and there isn't a great deal of it.

On the down side, there are a few words that are harder, such as: yucky, mucky, itchy, twitchy, scratch, batch, and between. As you see though, there's repetition in the base forms (-atch and -ucky) so children can get some good practice.

Four Stars.Very Good Read-aloud.The topic is of keen interest to small fry and the text has a nice rhyme.Good primer material for fairly early readers. My just turned 5 y.o. had very little problem with reading it after the first time through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Easy Science Book
I loved having this book available to my kindergarten students.Students checked this book out to take home and every time it came back to school the kids said it was a great book. The illustrations add to the humor of the book, and the words are understandable enough for beginning readers.Great for a classroom library.

4-0 out of 5 stars cute book
my little sister had this years ago and I would read it to her. when she came down with chicken pox herself she was well prepared

5-0 out of 5 stars Itchy, Itchy Chicken Pox
My daughter and I have enjoyed reading this book numerous times. The theme was very appropiate recently when there was an outbreak of chicken pox in her school. The story highlights different aspects of chicken poxand help to prepare or soothe a child who has been exposed and/or fightingthe "itch" battle. This is a good book for beginning readersbecause of the repetiveness and flow of the text.I would stronglyrecommend this book to beginner and not-so-beginner readers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A slightly somber addition to the world of Amber Brown
Third grader, Amber Brown, has experienced one very trying year. First, her parents informed her that not only were they getting a divorce, but that her father was moving to France to take on a new job. Then, to add even more drama to the mix, her best friend since preschool, Justin Daniels, up and left New Jersey to accompany his family in Arizona where his father had taken on a new job. Now, while Amber is happy to be embarking on the unknown world of fourth grade, she's upset to be leaving her beloved teacher, Mr. Cohen, behind. Mr. Cohen has made learning fun, and his frequent trips to foreign countries with his class will sorely be missed - especially by Amber. Luckily, this year Amber has something to look forward to during her summer vacation. First, she will be flying to London to spend two weeks with her Aunt Pam in England - a place where people drive on the wrong side of the road. Then, she'll be flying to Paris, France, where she'll be spending time with her father, whom she hasn't seen in what seems like forever. However, Amber's plans instantly change when she gets to London and realizes that she has come down with a case of chicken pox. Amber is horrified. With chicken pox, she can't possibly see the sights that London has to offer, or visit her father in France. Amber just knows that her summer is completely ruined, and can't believe her luck. That is, until she discovers that having the chicken pox isn't as bad as she originally thought - especially when you're surrounded by people you love.

In AMBER BROWN IS NOT A CRAYON, Paula Danziger tackled the issue of having your best friend move away. In YOU CAN'T EAT YOUR CHICKEN POX AMBER BROWN, Danziger tackles another issue - even more serious than the last - divorce - yet manages to keep it light-hearted, and easy-to-understand for young readers. Amber Brown, as always, is her usual chatty self, with her perky disposition, and a penchant for finding the humorous side in any situation. While the majority of the tale takes place in a London flat, it is in this location where Amber truly comes face-to-face with the many monsters that are haunting her - from a sudden illness to her parents lingering divorce. The introduction of Amber's Aunt Pam, along with her father are a nice inclusion to the tale. However, they certainly do not take the place of Amber's best friend, Justin, or her mother. The storyline in this particular book is slightly more touching, and a little more heart-wrenching, but Danziger is able to pull it off, and showcase Amber's feisty, upbeat personality - even in the face of sorrow. A slightly somber addition to the world of Amber Brown.

4-0 out of 5 stars chicken pox
this is a cute story about a girlnamed amber brown who travels to london with her aunt on her way to see her father who lives in france.while in london, amber comes down with the chicken pox, and she never gets to make it to france, buther father does come to london to see her.the story tells about her time in london and her efforts to get her mother and father back together.this a cute book for any young child, especially those with divorced parents.the whole series is great.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best of Amber Brown
I read many of the Amber Brown books with my 7-year old daughter, and generally, we love them. All of the books have a portion dedicated to the fact that her parents have split up and how she is dealing with this situation.Although my daughter cannot relate directly to that, it has lead to some interesting discussions. Most of the books have a humerous story interweaved, but unfortunately, not this one.It is a story of a girl who goes to Europe to visit her father, gets sick, and is bored sitting in her aunt's flat.We were as bored as Amber. While I would highly recommend other books (I, Amber Brown; Amber Brown Sees Red; Forever Amber Brown), I have to recommend staying away from this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Thought The Book Was Great!
I just finished this story. It is about Amber Brown at school. Her best friend Justin Daniels just moved away. When she came home her parents get divorced.Guess what! Her dad moves to France. She could not believe what happened to her life. Her life was wrecked into pieces! She washeart broken. Then a couple of months later she goes to France. She wasso happy to see her dad.France was so cool. But she gets the chickenpox!I thought the book was great! 5-0 out of 5 stars Arthur Goes to the Circus
I read Arthur's Chicken Pox.In this book, Arthur gets the chicken pox.Arthur wakes up with red spots on his face.He gets to eat on the sofa and DW wants to eat on the sofa, too. Will Arthur ever get better...I think you should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Book About Being Sick That Children Will Like - a review of "Arthur's Chicken Pox"
My take on this book results from my observations of my four and six year olds (boy and girl).I think it would be popular with children precisely for the same reason that books on loose teeth are popular:children in this age range are tremendously curious about their bodies.

My daughter went frantic for a while inquiring about loose teeth. She inspected the mouth of anyone who had missing teeth or who had wobbly ones. She asked what happened to them that they got loose, and what happened to them after they fell out....

In the same way, I see her looking at this book about chicken pox.She (and to a lesser extent, her brother) are curious about the spots, what they mean, etc. Also, I think it is just dawning on children this age that they can get very ill, and I believe it is comforting to them see that they will be cared for.

[One mom commented that she was concerned about how much loving care was lavished on Arthur and D.W. But I think it is reassuring to children.]

Four Stars.Okay Read-aloud that is interesting to children.

5-0 out of 5 stars so cute
I haven't read the book but I've seen the episode on PBS and it was so cute, and also funny how DW pretended to have chicken pox just so she'll get attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars A funny look at sibling rivalry
Arthur gets the chickenpox just before the circus comes to town. So he gets all the attention and care ~~ leaving his sister, D.W. out in the cold with jealousy. She fakes getting chickenpox and learns a lesson the hard way.

It's a cute look at sibling rivalry and envy. The story is readable and fun.

Once again the illustrations are fun to look at ~~ bright and colorful and cheerful. My boys can't read yet but they really enjoy the illustrations and I enjoy reading the stories.

1-12-04

4-0 out of 5 stars Primarily focusing on enviousy
Well, now that a hopefully working vaccine for chicken pox has been developed, this story is still great for teaching one about being careful what he or she wishes for.
The circus is in town-everybody's excited to go, but when Arthur is sick with chicken pox, D.W. comes home from play group to find Arthur lying on the couch so wishes she was sick so pretends to think Arthur is just pretending to be sick. And as the story continues, D.W. shows how she wishes she was the sick one-and in the end, Arthur is better, but D.W. gets the chicken pox.
This will be a great book to teach about being careful what you wish for even when chicken pox no longer exists. ... Read more

Laura writes about what happens to her and her brother and sister when they all come down the chicken pox and the story is delightful. Laura also illustrated the book as well. I especially enjoyed the dog's footprints to help guide you through the pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting book
This book is about a creative and over imaginative girl about 9 years old who hangs out with friends younger than her that all meet afterschool and put on plays together for fun. In this book, she decides to write about chicken pox but nobody likes her play and believe that she has to have had chicken pox first in order to write about it so she writes a play about an evil stepmother instead. The rest of the plot just focuses on spying on a mysterious neighbor and some of the kids coming down with chicken pox themselves and then there is a finalized play at the end with the script and all about a chicken pox party. Not really something intellectual for a kid, but just some lazy fun stuff to read about.

3-0 out of 5 stars not a real chicken pox party
A chicken pox party is really exposing one's kids at a young age to friends who have chicken pox so they can catch the virus early in life. This book doesn't have a chicken pox party the way it is defined 16 years after this book was written.

4-0 out of 5 stars cute book
the book was so cute that I myself wanted to write plays of my own and make productions of shows I already liked.I even wanted to act out the play at the end but never got a chance.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was obsessed with this book
I would read this all day even at the dinner table. The pizza party at the end was really mouth watering, as was the picnic.

3-0 out of 5 stars favourite book from childhood but some flaws
this girl annie and her younger friends wanted to put on a play, this time about a chicken pox epidemic and no one liked the idea(though the cast of this first idea made it to the back of this book cover I still don't know why) then in the next chapter annie is working on a volcano for school and getting ideas for another play. She decides to do a play called the evil stepmother and after some debate she lets the new girl and her best friend both be stepmothers and realizes the new girl is so good at acting evil. Then the new girl's mom picks her up and realizes one of the other kids has chicken pox for real so she takes him home and the rest of the kids don't like the mom being strict with the new girl keeping her from being in the play so they all spy on her and realize she's being "held hostage" and when they find out she's her stepmother, annie gets caught up in her own fairytale and thinks something is really happening. But when theyspy on her again and get caught they realize that the new girl actually came down with the chicken pox too which is why she couldn't come out to play, and they realize they were wrong about the mother too cause she was so nice and invited them all in for pizza. Then when annie goes home she realizes SHE has chicken pox and then writes a good play that is at the end of the book. The play is about a king and a queen and children in a village who love to play hula hoops and want to have a contest but then the boy comes down with chicken pox and can't participate so he goes to a sorcerer who gives him a chicken disguuise and so the "chicken" participates and wins the contest and they end up keeping him and feeding him chicken food but after a few days he's so tired of being a chicken that he wants to get out of his disguise and can't do it and starts to sound like a chicken too. Then the sorcerer helps him come out of the disguise and they all realize it was the boy from the village and by then all of them have come down with chicken pox so they all have a chicken pox party by sitting in a circle eating candy and peanuts and being tickled and then the king and queen end up making the boy a prince

now that I think about it the story is pretty lame but for it's time it was enjoyable. ... Read more
