From the author: For much of the 20th century, major depression was viewed as a malady to which children were not susceptible. In recent years, this view has given way to an understanding that child and adolescent depression not only exist, but constitute an insidious and major public health problem. Depressive symptoms in children can be subtle and varied. The diagnosis in adolescents often is complicated by behavioral manifestations associated with hormonal changes. Both the etiology and the treatment of child and adolescent depression remain controversial. However, recent developments in pharmacotherapy appear promising. Primary prevention may not always be efficacious, but evidence suggests secondary prevention can reduce significantly future psychosocial problems. (J Sch Health. 1995;65(9):390-393)

Book Description

Hastings experienced the rural and small town side of an event that touched all who weathered it—the economic crash of 1929 and its 10-year aftermath.

The author grew up in Marion, Illinois, entering the first grade in 1930, the start of the Great Depression. This book, which recalls memorable episodes in the life of that boy, is a sequel to the popular A Nickel’s Worth of Skim Milk.

What Hastings experienced as a child was typical of depression-era life. Those who were young then can relive lost youth in Hastings’ books. And there were moments worth reliving: Hastings tells of “laughter and love and tears in the midst of hunger and cold and deprivation.” Those too young to have experienced the economic devastation can see those hard days through the eyes of a trained storyteller reporting from the point of view of a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Depression
A well-written personal experience from a young boy's perspective. He gives one family's coping methods during this trying period in southern Illinois. This vivid account of day-to-day life could only have come from someone who was there. A nice complement to "A Penny's Worth of Skim Milk" also by this author (I had the honor to have had the author in my home for supper many years ago whereupon he gave me an autographed copy). Well recommended to anyone interested in this traumatic period. ... Read more

Book Description

Life in the Great Depression — long lines of unemployed, soup kitchens, men riding the rails, public works projects — these are the graphic images of the Great Depression of the 1930s, popularized by the press and seared into our memories. But outside of a few distinctive stories gathered from the oral and anecdotal writings on strategies used to survive, we know next to nothing about the daily life of the working class during those long and hungry years.

How did the families survive when the principal breadwinner was unemployed? How did they feed, shelter and clothe themselves when relief payments covered barely half of their essential needs? To answer these questions Denyse Baillargeon looks at the contribution of the housewives. By interviewing Montreal francophone women who were already married at the beginning of the 1930s, and by examining their principal responsibilities, she uncovers the alternative strategies these housewives used to counter poverty. Their recollections made it possible to shed light not only on the impact of the economic crisis on their household duties during the Depression but also on their lives from childhood to World War II, and on the living conditions of the working class from which most of them came. This material is all the more valuable because it proceeds from a generation of women that will soon disappear and who have left very little in the way of written evidence behind.

This study, which draws us into the intricate lives of individuals, reveals a previously unexplored dimension of the Depression and shows the importance of considering the domestic sphere for understanding the complete history of the working class.

Book Description
Following the stock market crash in 1929, the United States found itself in the throes of the Great Depression. While many people found jobs with newly created social programs, most farmers chose to stay home and work their farms. They were challenged by flood and drought disasters, but few gave up.Instead the depression brought out their thriftiness, faith and ingenuity.Adversities strengthened them, their love of God sustained them, and they had a lot of fun.

Ruth Myer remembers happy times during the Depression. As she states, "My childhood was happy and free from worry, as my life revolved around my mother and father, our pets and farm animals. We had enough food to eat, clothes to wear and a feast of books was available at the local library."Readers young and old will enjoy experiencing the Great Depression as seen through the eyes of a young girl growing up during that time. ... Book Description
A warm and touching first hand experience encompassing history and sociology in one of America's most trying times ... the Great Depression, this book is poignant, factual, and a very comfortable read. The personal story goes deep into family trials, tribulations, tragedies, expectations and values. It's a must read for anyone interested in American history, bygone sociology, personal history, and just plain interesting facts. It is touching, rewarding, uplifting and informative. An extraordinarily humble beginning, with minimal physical comforts and sustenance from birth through teenage years, did not hamper lifelong successes of the author. On the contrary, they are credited with promoting them. ... Read more
