Product Description
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is increasing rapidly worldwide and it's predicted that by 2020 it will represent the third leading cause of death. Sadly, this slow-progressing debilitating disease not only affects the individual but also has consequences for the family. More positively, the urgent need to improve the care offered and to raise the public profile of the condition has now been recognised. Healthcare providers play a central role in this, through health education, early diagnosis and better management through all stages of the disease.

Managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease provides an insight into this debilitative condition. The book aims to develop nurses' and allied health professionals' knowledge and skills in caring for individuals with COPD. It takes the reader on a journey from diagnosis through to end-of-life care and examines:

  • Initial diagnosis and symptom management
  • Smoking cessation
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation
  • The management of acute episodes
  • The role of each member of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Quality of life, including nutrition, fatigue management and leisure activities
  • The future for the care and management of people with the condition.

Healthcare professionals from multi-disciplinary teams have contributed to this book to demonstrate that a co-ordinated approach for these patients is required across both primary and secondary care. Managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease can be utilised by nurses and allied health professionals caring for patients at all stages of their disease. ... Read more

Product Description
The fourth leading cause of death in the United States, COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, affects an estimated 35 million Americans. Yet only half are aware that they are seriously ill. Life and Breath, by Dr. Neil Schachter, is the first book that alerts people to their risks for COPD and explains the steps they need to take to prevent the development of this debilitating and often fatal lung disease.

Life and Breath begins witha quick quiz to rate your risk for COPD. It explains the steps of a complete pulmonary work-up and teaches you about the painless, inexpensive six-second test that can save your life.

We all know that diet, exercise, and environmental changes can reduce the risk of heart disease and some types of cancer. Now, for the first time, Life and Breath provides the medical and lifestyle steps that can prevent, treat, and sometimes reverse the signs and symptoms of chronic lung disease. Dr. Schachter discusses the role of antioxidants in treating asthma and chronic bronchitis, explains why indoor exercise is better if you have irritable airways, and provides a supportive, simple, and successful plan to quit smoking.

Life and Breath takes you on a tour of your own home, pointing out sources of irritants and allergens that can cause pulmonary problems. Dr. Schachter explains how to improve indoor air quality to protect your lungs at any age, on the job, in your home, and on the road.

If you are one of the 15 million Americans with asthma, or one of the 94 million current or former smokers in this country, Life and Breath is the one book you need to stay alive and well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, a bit outdated
Schachter's book is generally excellent, and I gave it only four stars because it is a bit outdated in the chapters regarding meds and their development; O2 and the various delivery systems available and the travel requirements for those using supplementary O2.The book was published in 2003 and there have been many changes in those three areas since that time.In all other respects, it is one of the best I've read. The chapters explaining the physical changes that occur with asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis and the ways those physical changes affect breathing are both detailed and relatively easy for the layman to understand. His explanations of the various medications that are used, what they are designed to do and how they are supposed to work are detailed and complete.I was particularly pleased with his acknowledgement that while medications can improve some aspects of breathing for COPD patients, lifestyle changes are the keys to a better quality of life: no smoking, daily aerobic and strengthening exercise and attention to diet and nutrition. He encourages routine spirometry testing for smokers as part of regular physical checkups in the hopes of helping doctors diagnose and begin treating COPD early when there is a much better chance of a good quality of life as the patient has time to make the lifestyle changes necessary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book is a very good resource for people who live with respiratory issues. It is a great tool to help people become more knowledgeable about their condition and to learn to manage your life!

5-0 out of 5 stars life and breathGREAT INFORMATION IN THIS BOOK!!!
This is a lot of information that is easy to understand and use!! Dr doesn't make it seem like such a downer. (I bought COPD for Dummies at the same time and HATE IT, it is a downer)Usefull information on how to change your enviroment to help breath better, which we all could use a little of!!! just so much information. My husband and I are very happy with this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand information
This book was very informative, easy to understand, and covered the subject thoroughly.I really didn't have much idea what COPD was until I read this book.I recommend it highly if you have breathing problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful book
A book of this sort is good insofar as it is technically accurate, and also if it zeroes in on your especial situation. As a non-scientist I am unble to judge the former, and my situation is that I was recently diagnosed with early emphysema. But I quit smoking 13 years ago, so all the pages devoted to quitting smoking were irrelevant to me.I have, however, spent a lifetime with heavy smokers, starting before my birth -- not that I can do anything about that now. Thanks, Mom and Dad, colleagues, friends, and current and former husbands!

There is a lot in this book about COPD, its causes, its course, varieties of treatment, & strateies for living with it. It is easy to understand and has a glosary, bibliography for further research, and good index.

Fortunately my condition has been arrested with the use of Spireva [mentioned in the book],but I will keep my copy just in case. ... Read more

Product Description

The diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can be devastating. It’s important to note, though, that while COPD is debilitating, it is not a death sentence. With proper disease management, people with COPD can expect to live a full and happy life. While there are no magic pills or quick fixes, there are many things COPD sufferers can do to have more energy, less shortness of breath, and an overall better quality of life despite breathlessness or use of home oxygen. This comprehensive guide helps people in any stage of COPD learn to work with their physical limitations rather than against them. Compassionate and clearly written, it covers every aspect of the disease, including the psychological and emotional issues that go along with having COPD, medications and physical therapy, identifying triggers and warning signs, creating an action plan for worsening symptoms, techniques to make breathing easier, working with healthcare providers, and much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE HAS COPD!
Positive Options for Living with COPD, by Teri Allen, is a book I really wish I had read 10 years ago. My father just died last month after 10 years of painful struggle with COPD. After reading this book the first thing I did was go to an allergist to get tested for AAT deficiency, which my father had, to find out if I was genetically programmed to get this disease early.I am so relieved the test was negative, but if it had been positive, this book informed me that I could have had medical treatment to continue in good health.

This book has so much essential information about a disease that is so terrible, and yet about which little information has been generally available. I think a lot of doctors who treated my father didn't know about a lot of these things, because if they had, he could have had a much better life these last 10 years. My father saw doctors all those years and yet none of them every suggested half of the treatments that are written about here.I already knew a few things, (like how to use your inhaler correctly for maximum benefit) and tried to get my father to do them, but he was of the generation who would listen to the guy in the white coat and not his daughter.

I don't mean to make this review too maudlin, because it was time for my father to go, and he is at peace and his suffering is over. Even though my father has passed, I am very glad to have read this book. Because I read it, I found out about the genetic test, and don't have to worry that I will develop this automatically.I now know that I still need to be careful about monitoring my pulmonary function because of years of asthma and allergies, but I feel empowered to know the things I can do to prevent COPD, and improve my life if I should ever develop it because of childhood exposure to second-hand smoke.I am also thrilled to find out that I can do a lot to ensure my children's life-long good health. My aunt on my father's side also has COPD, and I am sending her this book because now I know that even after a person has the disease, there are a lot of positive things you can do to make your life much better.

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
Until recently COPD was largely neglected by health professionals and viewed as the Cinderella of respiratory conditions. Many patients were seen as heart-sink cases with a self-inflicted disease. But views are now changing and COPD, like other chronic conditions managed within primary care, has taken on a higher profile within the Government and NHS agenda. This book reflects that change. It looks at the treatment of COPD in primary care: in the GP surgery, in outpatient clinics, and through district and community nursing. COPD management does not depend on purely medical intervention; much can be done to help these patients from a psychological, social and holistic perspective to cope with their everyday activities. Patients lead a frightening existence, struggling to breathe and to cope with their symptoms. The book helps nurses and other healthcare professionals to support these patients. ... Read more

Product Description

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. By 2020, COPD is expected to be the fifth leading cause of disability and the third leading cause of death. COPD is associated with significant co-morbid illnesses including cardiovascular disease, pulmonary vascular disease, osteoporosis, depression and thoracic malignancies. In addition, COPD patients often have systemic manifestations of their disease, including peripheral muscle dysfunction, decreased activity levels and nutritional abnormalities, all of which contribute to poor functional status, decreased quality of life and increased health care utilization. Lack of recognition and understanding of the complex interactions of these common co-morbid conditions and systemic effects often contributes to sub-optimal care for patients with COPD.

Comprehensive in covering the range of co-morbidities that often accompany COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Co-Morbidities and Systemic Consequences provides a concise, evidence-based review of the problem and its systemic manifestations. All physicians interested in this growing disorder – from subspecialists to primary care providers –will find in this timely and informative title the practical, state-of-the art approaches needed to provide targeted, integrated care for patients with COPD.
