The second edition of Cleft Lip and Palate: Perspectives In Management is an unparalleled review of treatment concepts in all areas of cleft involvement presented by an international team of experienced clinicians. This text can never be duplicated since it largely consists of longitudinal facial and palatal growth studies of dental casts, photographs, panorexes and cephalographs from birth to adolescence. Throughout all growth and treatment concepts, the need for differential diagnosis in treatment planning has been underscored. The underlying argument is that all of the treatment goals -- good speech, facial aesthetics and dental occlusion -- may be realized without the need to sacrifice one for the other. Every chapter author's concepts arose from extensive experience subjected to testing. The last issue of the Clinics in Plastic Surgery that was devoted to the management of patients with clefts of the lip and palate was published over 10 years ago (October 1993). Since then, several advances, modifications, and refinements of surgical techniques and treatment protocols have been described and some studies with long-term results were published. Some surgical techniques were abandoned because of suboptimal long-term results, and some promising ideas (e.g., fetal correction of cleft lip) were not further pursued because of complex ethical implications and the potential high risk for the mother and the fetus. Preoperative orthopedic techniques with mostly passive but also active devices are currently widely used in preparation for unilateral and bilateral cleft lip repair. Thus skeletal relationships are improved preoperatively and the surgeon is given the opportunity to repair the lip under less tension and more optional conditions. Preoperative manipulations of nasal cartilages with naso-alveolar molding and other devices also gained some popularity and have been incorporated in some treatment protocols. Advocates of this technique have demonstrated that with these appliances the alar cartilages are slowly molded in a more favorable position facilitating the surgical correction of the nasal deformity. Drawbacks include additional expenses, multiple visits for adjustment, and the possibility of overstretching the nostril during treatment. Simultaneous correction of the coexisting nasal deformity with undermining and positioning of the alar cartilages in a more symmetric and aesthetically appropriate position is now incorporated in most treatment protocols. ... Great resource for children with speech difficulties
This is a great little book. There are'nt many books out there that address and introduce topics such as this in a child centred way. It is great to see that material like this is available. The illustrations are really good and overall I would highly recommend this book.

Cute story for cleft affected children
I am the mother of a child with cleft lip and cleft palate and have started a nonprofit called Dylan's Smile (www.dylanssmile.com). I had hoped to find a book to give to new families as they begin their personal journey through surgeries, therapies and the social encounters that ensue. This is a cute book - however, I was confused a little by a few details (the little girl has a scar on her lip, but was only said to have cleft palate). Excellent introduction to cleft lip & palate
In preparation for possibly adopting a cleft-affected child, I started reading. This is the first book that I picked up and it was an excellent place to begin. It's a quick, easy read that explains the basics in plain English. Along with chapters on surgery options, feeding, possible speech and hearing problems, and teeth development, it includes helpful diagrams and photos. I know there are some newer resources out there, but this book was a great introduction. Equipped with some basic knowledge and terminology, I'm prepared to do more in-depth research. ... Read more
