Product Description
This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on the subject of cleft lip and palate. Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects that affect the upper lip and roof of the mouth. They happen when the tissue that forms the roof of the mouth and upper lip don't join before birth. The problem can range from a small notch in the lip to a groove that runs into the roof of the mouth and nose. This can affect the way the child's face looks. It can also lead to problems with eating, talking and ear infections. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the relevant institute for this disease, and others. In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, this disc set also includes our Medical Encyclopedia, a $19.95 value! The Encyclopedia presents a collection of official documents about a wide range of medical topics, diseases, illnesses, health and wellness. Product Description
Speech disorders, especially hypernasality, are common in children with cleft lip and palate. In order to simplify the diagnosis during the speech therapy of these patients an automatic non-invasive way to measure hypernasality is desirable. In this context, the author analyzes approaches to the detection of hypernasal speech. The focus lies on examining the fitness of several features for that purpose. These include pronunciation features computed from phoneme confusion probabilities, prosodic features, features based on the Teager Energy operator, and Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients. The extraction process of each of these features is described as well as the classification system in which they are tested. Finally, experimental results are presented and discussed. This work addresses researchers in the field of pattern recognition. ... Read more

Excerpt: Cleft lip (cheiloschisis) and cleft palate (palatoschisis), which can also occur together as cleft lip and palate, are variations of a type of clefting congenital deformity caused by abnormal facial development during gestation. A cleft is a fissure or openinga gap. It is the non-fusion of the body's natural structures that form before birth. Approximately 1 in 700 children born have a cleft lip and/or a cleft palate. It has sometimes colloquially been equated with the phrase harelip, but this is considered deeply offensive, and is used incorrectly, as that term refers to the pulling of the lip towards the nose. Clefts can also affect other parts of the face, such as the eyes, ears, nose, cheeks, and forehead. In 1976, Paul Tessier described fifteen lines of cleft. Most of these craniofacial clefts are even more rare and are frequently described as Tessier clefts using the numerical locator devised by Tessier. A cleft lip or palate can be successfully treated with surgery, especially so if conducted soon after birth or in early childhood. If the cleft does not affect the palate structure of the mouth it is referred to as cleft lip. Cleft lip is formed in the top of the lip as either a small gap or an indentation in the lip (partial or incomplete cleft) or it continues into the nose (complete cleft). Lip cleft can occur as a one sided (unilateral) or two si...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=239890 ... Read more
