Product Description

One out of every one hundred young women is anorexic. Four out of every one hundred are bulimic. Overall, research suggests that eight million Americans—men and women—have an eating disorder. Yet in the face of these startling statistics, parents do not have a clear understanding of how to help their child overcome an eating disorder.

In Conquering Eating Disorders, Susan Cooper, a licensed psychologist and group psychotherapist, and Peggy Norton, a dietician with thirty years of experience, bridge the gap between the statistics and the real-life issues to help teens and parents gain the communication skills necessary to support the healing process. Parents need to know that only in Conquering Eating Disorders will you hear directly from teens struggling with eating disorders and get expert advice on how to interpret and respond to what your teen is saying—even when they're not talking.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!!!
As a school counselor, I think that every elementary, middle, and high school counselor should have a copy of Conquering Eating Disorders on their shelves, and even one to give away. This non-threatening, easy to read, and very informative book caputres the essence of this illness.I love the realistic examples, written in story format; the amazing information about eating disorders weaved creatively in the processing; and the "what to do" for parents and then their teens after each chapter.I am so impressed with this book!I have read several on eating disorders, but none have truly captured my attention and promotion as this one.The chapters are short and easy to read in one sitting, and ideal for even teens and their parents to read it together.

This book promotes the positive role that school counselors play in a child's life, and I believe that after reading it, you will become more aware and a better advocate for those struggling with eating issues.Five stars, definitely!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical scenarios put face on Eating Disorders
As a registered dietitian, I have worked with a variety of clients with eating disorders and their family members. This book provides many practical points for initiating conversation about issues that may contribute to the development of an eating disorder. Parents, teens, coaches, teachers, friends - good reference for all, and I recommend it to my dietitian colleagues, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for parents who fear that this debilitating problem could affect their children
Modern society has wrongfully taught some girls that triple digit weight of any sort is fat. "Conquering Eating Disorders: How Family Communication Heals" discusses the horrible reality of eating disorders very frankly. Bad body image is a leading cause, and many teens speak out and give their frank reasons, however distorted, why they do the things that they do. With much advice for parents, family, and friends to help a loved one overcome their harmful delusion, "Conquering Eating Disorders" is a must for parents who fear that this debilitating problem could affect their children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important help for parents
As a mother, grandmother and foster mother, I think that this book belongs on every parent's book shelf next to all the important child rearing texts we turn to.In reader-friendly style, it offers great insight into how to help the children in our lives develop healthful eating habits, feel great about their bodies and enjoy a happy relationship with food throughout their lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and Interesting
A well written and unique approach to a serious problem. This book will be of interest to parents and their adolescent children.I found it insightful and easy to understand and apply.Bravo to the authors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Student Perspective on text
I am seeking a dual certification in Special Education/General Education with a Middle School Endorsement in Science and Social Studies. This text is one of the better ones I have seen-The information is first and foremost arranged in a brain friendly manner. The companion website is VERY helpful. I have been using the powerpoints on the companion website to help guide my reading and I print them out in the outline format.
This way I can pick out the main ideas in each chapter and unit and they act as a study guide. i like the flashcard and memory games that are also available. The quizzes are awesome, because the questions are always different. My first Unit Exam is Tuesday, so we'll see if these study methods/practices are working-however I actually feel pretty confident-there are a lot of vocabulary words, but the text does a great job of not using an overwhelming amount of professional jargon-I will be keeping this text to add to my professional resource library. I would recommend this text for any educator who is learning about the Response to Intervention Process as well as general and special educators-pre-service and practicing. It helps identify the physiological and psychological etiologies of speech and language development and provides typical developmental milestones in a progressive and systematic deliniation. THANK YOU, Dr. Fogel for bringing the knowledge language of the IEP and SLPs to a level that we can all understand! A must read! ... Read more

Movies, television programs, books, and a Broadway play that have characters with communication disorders are studied. There are also references to well-known singers, actors, politicians, writers, radio personalities, and other people in the media, with an emphasis on their particular communication disorders.Because this text may be used as an introductory text, the final chapter, in a question-and-answer format, addresses the clinical and educational requirements to enter the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology, salaries, job opportunities, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and more. ... Product Description
A massive reference work on the scale of MITECS (The MIT Encyclopedia of Cognitive Sciences), The MIT Encyclopedia of Communication Disorders will become the standard reference in this field for both research and clinical use. It offers almost 200 detailed entries, covering the entire range of communication and speech disorders in children and adults, from basic science to clinical diagnosis.MITECD is divided into four sections that reflect the standard categories within the field (also known as speech-language pathology and audiology): Voice, Speech, Language, and Hearing. Within each category, entries are organized into three subsections: Basic Science, Disorders, and Clinical Management. Basic Science includes relevant information on normal anatomy and physiology, physics, psychology and psychophysics, and linguistics; this provides a scientific foundation for entries in the other subsections. The entries that appear under Disorders offer information on the definition and characterization of specific disorders, and tools for their identification and assessment. The Clinical Management subsection describes appropriate interventions, including behavioral, pharmacological, surgical, and prosthetic.Because the approach to communication disorders can be quite different for children and adults, many topics include separate entries reflecting this. Although some disorders that are first diagnosed in childhood may persist in some form throughout adulthood, many disorders can have an onset in either childhood or adulthood, and the timing of onset can have many implications for both assessment and intervention.Topics covered in MITECD include cochlear implants for children and adults, pitch perception, tinnitus, alaryngeal voice and speech rehabilitation, neural mechanisms of vocalization, holistic voice therapy techniques, computer-based approaches to children?s speech and language disorders, neurogenic mutism, regional dialect, agrammatism, global aphasia, and psychosocial problems associated with communicative disorders. ...
