Don’t Gamble with Your Future.

Nearly two-thirds of the adult population in the United States gambled in the past year. For some, this represented a casual bet or a whimsical wager on winning the lottery. But for a significant and growing portion of the population, gambling isn’t recreation–it’s life.

Many believe that Christians are unlikely to become enslaved by gambling. Yet research indicates that Christians are drawn to gambling at the same rate as others. In Turning the Tables on Gambling, you’ll explore the answers to questions such as:

• What is my risk of becoming addicted to gambling?
• Is playing the lottery or making a casual wager harmless?
• At what point does gambling become destructive?
• If gambling is a problem for me or someone I know, what can I do?

With solid insight, personal anecdotes, and practical help, Dr. Gregory Jantz describes why people of all ages and backgrounds are lured into gambling and how freedom form this destructive behavior can be found.

INCLUDES GAMBLING PERSONALITY QUESTIONNAIRE! ... Read more

Product Description
Why do people gamble, and why is it that people sometimes gamble to excess? 'The Psychology of Gambling' provides a comprehensive study of gambling behaviour and explores both theories and therapies for the treatment of problem gambling.

It is a difficult problem to understand why people gamble at all, but far more difficult to understand why a person will borrow, steal, defraud, lie, break a range of promises, prove irresponsible and commit a range of crimes all in order to gamble. In
this comprehensive study the author examines gambling behaviour, with descriptions of specific games, along with different explanations for gambling and approaches to treatment of problem gambling. In the preface the author points out there are a few
accurate statistics regarding problem gambling, and demonstrates laboratory experiments on gambling are largely unreliable. Consequently the book relies mostly on field studies in drawing its conclusions. While relying on field studies for data, the book
does not limit itself in its theoretical approach. All perspectives can coexist, and a joint approach to understanding is more effective as an explanation than any one perspective alone.

The Psychodynamics and Psychology of Gambling is thefirst volume in the four-volume The Gambling Theory and ResearchSeries. Author Mikal Aasved felt a need to fill what he perceived tobe a lack of background sources or reviews of literature pertaining togambling theory and research. This series will present major findingsof leading researchers as they study the causes and effects ofgambling, both recreational and excessive. This first entry in theseries reviews the most influential psychodynamic and psychologicaltheories that explain why people gamble. Aasved includes sections on behavioral(learning or reinforcement theory) psychological approaches togambling with discussion of Skinner’s ideas and research findings aswell as Pavlov’s principles. This book begins with the question"Why do people gamble?" and offers many theories proposed byclinicians, laboratory and field researchers, and participants as theyseek to explain the motivation behind gambling. The differencesbetween gambling as entertainment and gambling compulsion is a focusof much research. Aasved addresses ideas set forth as to why somepeople are able to control their gambling and others cannot, even whenit means sacrificing their jobs, family, and materialpossessions. Product Description
The mercurial rise in legalized gambling in the United States over roughly the last 15 years has spawned a great deal of debate among scientists and practitioners on how to conceptualize and study the phenomenon, how to treat persons who experience difficulties controlling their level of play, and how to prevent individuals from becoming problem or “pathological” gamblers. The current volume brings together a group of basic and applied behavior scientists to discuss these matters.

The book is designed to allow a reader familiar with the general concepts and principles of behavior analysis to gain a greater understanding of how the field is addressing the area of gambling. Graduate students taking classes in behavioral applications, or those enrolled in seminars specific to gambling, will find this collection of papers a vital resource. The book will also be useful to clinicians interested in understanding the basic and conceptual foundations that underlie successful prevention and treatment approaches.

Product Description
Over the past 30 years there has been a dramatic increase in the availability of convenient and legal gambling opportunities. Most people can reach a casino in a matter of a few hours, lottery tickets in minutes, or an online gaming site in seconds. Accompanying this proliferation of gambling is a growing understanding that between 5% and 9% of adults experience significant to severe problems due to their gambling activities. These problems have become a real health concern, with substantial costs to individuals, families, and communities. The objective of this book is to provide the clinician or graduate student with essential information about problem and pathological gambling. After placing this behavioral addiction and its co-occurring difficulties in perspective, by describing its proliferation, the associated costs, and diagnostic criteria and definitions, the authors present detailed information on a strategy to assess and treat gambling problems in an outpatient setting. They go on to provide clear and easy-to-follow intervention guidelines, including homework assignments, for a brief and cost-efficient cognitive behavioral approach to problem gambling, involving stepped care and guided self-change. Means of countering problems and barriers to change and vivid case vignettes round off this thorough, but compact guide for clinicians. ... Read more

Presenting the latest conclusions about the psychological processes leading to impaired self-control, this book challenges the current harm-prevention policyof "responsible gambling." The authors present the most recent and evolving research into gambling, demonstrating the psychological variables that govern the erosion or maintenance of self-control over gambling behavior. These studies provide an empirical basis for a model of impaired control of gambling. Impaired control, in its broadest sense, is considered to be the defining psychological construct of all the addictive behaviors and occupies a central position in conceptualizing the addictive aspects of gambling. ... Although gambling is enjoyable entertainment and can provide unparalleled excitement, it can financially drain and ruin some people. This manual is a roadmap and workbook for the problem gambler or potential problem gambler, who can not control the amount of money he/she loses, to seriously give up on gambling.

This work is based on over 25 years of experience in gambling by the author, who shares his insight with the reader. While attending college, the author began gambling at 18 in local New York City OTB parlors and New York horse racing tracks. Then he got caught up in casino gambling, when it debuted in Atlantic City.He also dabbled in most other forms of gambling, in lotto, poker, and sports betting. As much as the author loves to win, he hates to lose in gambling. So, after 25 years and losing a small fortune, he decided to give up on his quest of becoming a consistent winner. This book describes the way he finally coped with and quit gambling. There is also ample space for the reader to write down his/her own thoughts on how to quit gambling to personalize the manual for his/herself.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Way to Quit Gambling?
The reader of this book would be better served by going straight to the back of the book and contact the organizations listed in the appendix such as GA or the National Council on Problem Gamblers. There is nothing in this book that would benefit the compulsive gambler and help him/her stop gambling. It is poorly written. There are numerous points throughout which take up page space.Example from Page 44:"Consider the benefits of not gambling. You will not be able to lose.By not losing, your finances will improve in disbelief. Also, emotional turmoil and stress associated with gambling will vanish." There are other equally simplistic points throughout.I found this book of little or no benefit.

This is a just the Facts type approach to problem gamblers. It is a good material for the problem gambler to refer back to as a reminder of what that failure has cost him and why it isnt in anyones best interest to continue down that path. Problem gamblers can use this material as it is helpful to have around as a reminder when the gambling itch tempts a chronic gambler to scratch a losing path again. i recommend it

Editorial Review

Product Description
This is the second in a series of books intended to review and evaluate the most popular and influential explanations for gambling and the many research studies that have been conducted to confirm or refute them. This book focuses on the contributions of specialists in the social sciences, most of whom are convinced that gambling is a consequence of the social or subcultural environment in which the gambler lives. To further the understanding of why people gamble, investigators went to places where gambling occurred and spent time among and interacted with the gamblers. Some attended Gamblers Anonymous meetings and others became participant observers in gambling establishments by becoming employed as roulette croupiers or card dealers. Topics covered include the gambler's point of view, the researcher's point of view, social structure, economics, statistical tests of earlier ideas, special populations, "armchair" theories, gambling and the public, problem correlates, and risk factors. In addition, a critique of the qualitative and quantitative studies involving survey research methods and interview research methods is given that provides theoretical explanations for why people gamble. Numerous results from geographical surveys are provided, as well as tables that examine the research of problem gambling. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a superb book whose time is long overdue.
Gambling is one of the most rapdily spreading forms of addiction. In response, the biomedical addictions establishment has responded in its typical fashion of first denial, then quick evaluation whether these"new" patients can make the practitioner more financially comforable. Following this comes the inevitable third generation of turf squabbles, where various segments of the addictions and other interested communities attempt to cut themselves the largest portion of pie they can.

McCown & Chamberlain are brutally honest with this grim reality, as they are equally blunt regarding the multi impediments anyone with a gambling problem faces. While their review of the literature is not academically pedantic, it is sufficient to cause the run-of-the-mill clinician or even parent to give serious consideration to the idea that gambling may be the crack of the next quarter century.

However, these authors are not pessimists! Nor are they idealogues with a turf to defend. Instead they insist that only a unified campaign from the biological, behavioral, and social sciences will help those whose gambling has crossed the line from harmless hobby to life threatening addictions.

These authors argue from a morally neutral tone-despite having witnessed the horror of gambling disorders first hand. They admit that a major limitation of the effort is the mental health community has committed so resources into treatment that we lag behind progress made in other fields of addiction be a half century or more. McCown & Chamberlain are not afraid to attempt to experiment and to admit failures. They are open when they are stymied by our social policy and lack of treatment technology.Yet in the best spirit of scientist/clinicians they have faith that progress is always possible and site just enough science to make the reader convinced.

In addition to the above, their outstanding case studies, sensitivities to women and minorities, scientific ecclecticism and almost missionary sense of calling the scientific community to arms makes this book most readable.

Finally, their continued explorations into addictions as nonlinear constructs, often with a family sytstemic root, remains one of this books most fascinating hypotheses. We can only hope that these researcher scratch time somewhere to continue practicing both good science and good clinical practice. ... Read more

Problem Gambling in Europe

Challenges, Prevention, and Interventions

Edited by Gerhard Meyer, University of Bremen, Germany

Tobias Hayer, University of Bremen, Germany

Mark Griffiths, Nottingham Trent University, United Kingdom

As a leisure activity, gambling dates back to ancient times. More recently, the surge in avenues for gambling—casinos, sports betting, lotteries, and remote media (e.g.,Internet, mobile phone, interactive television) among them—finds growing numbers of people losing control over their gambling behaviour, usually at great personal and financial expense. Problem Gambling in Europe is the first book to offer a robust international knowledge base compiled by an interdisciplinary panel of researchers in gambling behaviour.

Reports from 21 countries throughout Western, Eastern, Northern, and Southern Europe reveal wide variations in types of wagering activities, participation by populations, social and criminal consequences related to pathological gambling, the extent to which governments acknowledge the problem, and efforts to control it (often with the involvement of the gaming industries). For each country, noted experts discuss:

  • Current legislation regulating gambling.
  • Forms of gambling and their addictive potential.
  • Participation rates and demographics.
  • Prevalence of pathological gambling.
  • National policies to address problem gambling.
  • Prevention strategies and treatment methods.

Problem Gambling in Europe brings insight and clarity to a widespread and complex phenomenon, and will be of considerable interest to all parties working to reduce their negative effects: social science researchers in addictions, gambling behaviour, and public health; clinical, social, and health psychologists and psychiatrists; treatment practitioners; the gaming industry; regulators; and policy makers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth reading
As closed for information a gaming industry is, it's no wonder why this book is full with rumors, false information, errors and wrong conclusions. Inaccuracy of this book might also be attributed to authors desire to cover as many subjects as possible without really digging deep in any of them, or checking the statements in this book to be factually correct. Errors in this book range from whole country names/locations (Serbia is not same as Siberia, nevertheless Siberia is not a country at all), not good knowledge of gambling itself (allowing authors to present backgammon as gambling, placing it in same category as poker), to wide array of factual mistakes with numbers and percentages.

If the authors have covered this subject more seriously, even if that meant smaller number of countries covered, but with all facts and statistics double and triple checked, and with some real conclusions and opinions drawn from that, this book might have some value in academic/legislative circles. As is currently, I would not recommend this book at all. ... Read more

Product Description
We are a nation of gamblers: pari-mutuel wagering at horse tracks; blackjack in Las Vegas; the NCAA basketball office pool; even day trading on the internet. Gambling is both our national pastime and our predominant cultural metaphor—play the field; beat the odds; take a chance on love. Yet gambling poses serious risks to individuals and to society as a whole.

Neil Isaacs—sports historian, licensed clinical social worker, English professor, and a gambler himself for more than fifty years—seeks to shatter the myths interfering with our understanding of gambling addiction, its causes, and its treatment. He begins by systematically debunking several commonly held beliefs, demonstrating that there is no such thing as the law of averages, that gambling is not inherently sinful, immoral, or criminal, and that money is not always the prime motivator for gamblers.

Isaacs shows how habitual gambling can lead to compulsive gambling, but avoids oversimplifying this condition. Arguing against a undifferentiated interpretation of pathological gambling as a simple impulse control disorder, he draws examples from fiction, film, and his own practice to demonstrate additional ways gambling can be abused.

A radical departure from established views, You Bet Your Life identifies the costs—in dollars, people, families, and credit ratings—of society’s failure to address adequately the burdens of gambling. ... Read more
