5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for young children with cystic fibrosis
I have a 5 year old with cystic fibrosis and he was so excited to see pictures of other children having to do what he does every day - use a vest, nebulizer, take enzymes, etc. He just kept repeating "just like me".This has certainly helped him to not feel like he is the only one.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
This book is a wonderful tool to show your children with Cystic Fibrosis that they aren't alone. They aren't the only one in the world who needs to do these treatments. To be able to see all these children smiling is so beautiful. My son loves looking at this book and has me read it to him over and over. --Charla (A parent of a child with CF)

3-0 out of 5 stars Curious on the insight of others dealing with CF
Being a fellow person stricken with Cystic Fibrosis, I can relate to alot of what the author went through. I enjoyed her book, especially the first half, then I feel she dabbed too much into her relationship with her beau and the age old "why me" mentality. I've come to the conclusion that she was clearly having a rough time, presumably a lung infection, at the time she was writing much of this. ... Read more

Excerpt: ATP-binding cassette transporters (ABC-transporter) are members of a protein superfamily that is one of the largest and most ancient families with representatives in all extant phyla from prokaryotes to humans. ABC transporters are transmembrane proteins that utilize the energy of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) hydrolysis to carry out certain biological processes including translocation of various substrates across membranes and non-transport-related processes such as translation of RNA and DNA repair. They transport a wide variety of substrates across extra- and intracellular membranes, including metabolic products, lipids and sterols, and drugs. Proteins are classified as ABC transporters based on the sequence and organization of their ATP-binding cassette (ABC) domain(s). ABC transporters are involved in tumour resistance, cystic fibrosis, bacterial multidrug resistance, and a range of other inherited human diseases. ABC transporters utilize the energy of ATP hydrolysis to transport various substrates across cellular membranes. They are divided into three main functional categories. In prokaryotes, importers mediate the uptake of nutrients into the cell. This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on the subject of cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disease of the mucus and sweat glands. It affects mostly your lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, sinuses and sex organs. CF causes your mucus to be thick and sticky. The mucus clogs the lungs, causing breathing problems and making it easy for bacteria to grow. This can lead to problems such as repeated lung infections and lung damage. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the relevant institute for this disease, and others. In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, this disc set also includes our Medical Encyclopedia, a $19.95 value! 5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for CF Care Providers
I have kept copies of this excellent resource for residents who rotate through my Pediatric Pulmonology practice.Orenstein, Stern and Rosenstein write in a succinct and clear manner that gets the provider the information needed in care for those afflicted with CF.The book can be read in two weeks of evenings cover to cover. The system approach that they use is helpful and pragmatic.Though the book is dated in its publication, the recommendations that are made for the care and management of CF are still current. The added bonus is the price.Do not be dissuaded by the bargain basement price, the information authors provide for the care and management of CF is priceless. Whenever I get a new CF patient, I give a copy of this book to the primary care physician and I give a copy of the companion book Cystic Fibrosis:A Guide forPatient and Family http://www.amazon.com/Cystic-Fibrosis-Guide-Patient-Family/dp/0781741521/ref=pd_cp_b_2 to the patient. These books make the care and management of CF patients easy to understand and an achievable goal.
