Strap into your straitjacket and fasten it tight, for within these pages are stories of lost love, lost ways...and lost minds. A companion to Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Madness, this second installment of perennial Poe favorites includes The Tell-Tale Heart, The System of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether, The Oblong Box, and The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar. While the original stories have been neatly nipped and tucked, the dread, the gore, and the horror still reaches otherworldly heights thanks to Gris Grimly's spine-chilling visuals. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!!
Who doesn't love Poe? Who doesn't love Gris Grimly? Put them together and wow! what a combo!!! I had the pleasure of meeting Gris Grimly at a book signing for one of his very rare East Coast appearances. I just really love his style of art, so when I found out about this book coming out, I immediately knew I had to purchase it. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just in time for Halloween!
This book is great! It has beautiful and creepy illustrations on each page by Grimly along with Poe's writings. It's a good book to read with school age children for the Halloween season or for teenagers and up who will appreciate the cheeky accompanying artwork. Very cute in a creepy way! ... Read more

Product Description
Despite everything that has been written about the brain, a very important part of this vital organ has been overlooked in most books -- until now. The Other Brain is the story of glia, which make up approximately 85 percent of the cells in the brain. Long neglected as little more than cerebral packing material ("glia" means glue), glia are sparking a revolution in brain science.

Glia are completely different from neurons, the brain cells that we are familiar with. Scientists are discovering that glia have their own communication network, which operates in parallel to the more familiar communication among neurons. Glia provide the insulation for the neurons, and glia even regulate the flow of information between neurons.

But it is the potential breakthroughs for medical science that are the most exciting frontier in glia research today. Diseases such as brain cancer and multiple sclerosis are caused by diseased glia. Glia are now believed to play an important role in such psychiatric illnesses as schizophrenia and depression, and in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. They are linked to infectious diseases such as HIV and prion disease (mad cow disease, for example) and to chronic pain. Scientists have discovered that glia repair the brain and spinal cord after injury and stroke. The more we learn about these cells that make up the "other" brain, the more important they seem to be.

Written by a neuroscientist who is a leader in the research to reveal the secrets of these brain cells, The Other Brain offers a firsthand account of science in action. It takes us into the laboratories where important discoveries are being made, and it explains how scientists are learning that glial cells come in different types, with different capabilities. It tells the story of glia research from its origins to the most recent discoveries and gives readers a much more complete understanding of how the brain works and where the next breakthroughs in brain science and medicine are likely to come. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Other Brain: From Dementia to Schizophrenia, How New Discoveries about the Brain Are Revolutionizing Medicine and Science
I found The Other Brain a fascinating read. The book is amazingly interesting and easy for a layperson to read. It poses insightful questions about why particular events or symptoms are occurring and then uses the chapter to explain. It provides interesting surprises about how the brain works, how glia influences neuro-degenerative disorders, and how research is investigating new treatment options based on the impacts of the glia cells. For anyone who has been impacted by any of these diseases or who family has been impacted, the book will enlighten you on the latest understandings and research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly comprehendible read!
I picked up this book for two reasons, 1. I've always been interested in the subject of neuroscience vs neural plasticity and 2. 'The Other Brain' was featured in Seed Magazine and reviewed as an intriguing read for the general audience.
I was amazed how well the book was written and how comprehendible the context was. My professional background is in fashion design, which as far as you can get form neuroscience. The book enlightened my understanding of brain functions as well as the level of advancement in the field.
Glad to have read this book and await more form the author!

Product Description
Bringing alive the relevance and value of psychoanalytic concepts in supporting the core role of professionals working directly in services for people who are older, this fascinating new book will also be of interest to analysts and psychotherapists interested in old age and the application of psychoanalytic thinking in the public sector.

Davenhill shares an approach that has been helpful to her as a clinical psychologist working within the NHS and as a psychoanalyst working with people coming for consultation and intensive psychoanalytic treatment in the latter part of the lifespan. It will become evident to the reader that while each chapter is different and stands in its own right, there are certain psychoanalytic concepts which appear and reappear again and again. Specifically these are the concepts of transference, counter transference and projective identification, which are the theoretical and clinical bedrock on which psychoanalytic psychotherapy rests. Each chapter offers a different lens to the reader that will broaden and deepen understanding of such core concepts and their straightforward applicability in strengthening the quality of treatment offered both within old age services and psychological therapy services for people who are older in the public sector.

Product Description
Christine Bryden was a top civil servant and single mother of three children when she was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 46. Since then she has gone on to challenge almost every stereotype of people with dementia by campaigning for self-advocacy, writing articles and speaking at national conferences. This book is a vivid account of the author's experiences of living with dementia, exploring the effects of memory problems, loss of independence, difficulties in communication and the exhaustion of coping with simple tasks. She describes how, with the support of her husband Paul, she continues to lead an active life nevertheless, and explains how professionals and carers can help. Christine Bryden makes an outspoken attempt to change prevailing attitudes and misconceptions about the disease. Arguing for greater empowerment and respect for people with dementia as individuals, she also reflects on the importance of spirituality in her life and how it has helped her better understand who she is and who she is becoming. ... Inspiring story of how one sufferer from ementia ivercame guge difficulties to lead a varied and fulfilling life.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great!
This book was great; it clearly speaks to the reader and makes you want to more.It only has four chapters, so it's short and sweet. The information is presented in an easy to read format, and the medical terminology is defined so that the reader can understand. This book has definitely changed my views on what is like living with dementia.I recommend this to anyone who would like to know more about dementia, and especially to anyone dealing with this illness and their families.

5-0 out of 5 stars great insight
This book contains information that most books dealing with dementia do not - HOPE & a personal account from someone who is actually going through the disease themself! Which gives great insight to anyone connected to dementia! I would highly this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Forgetting Is the Worst Part...
This is evidence that some people can overcome the impossible. The dreaded calamity of not being able to remember in one of its worst forms hit Christin Boden at the age of 46 when she was diagnosed with progressive Althemizer's disease.Of course, she was hit hard and set out to learn all she could about this debilitating disease. The main thing is that she did not just crawl in a corner and give up.After all, she had three children to care for, so she became an advocate for people with dementia.

She wrote a book, WHO WILL I BE WHEN I DIE? and, three years after her initial diagnosis, she married again at the age of fifty and got on with her new life. She lectured around the world for the Dementia Advocy and Support Network International. She sets forth the reality of living with this major setback. Both emotional and physical needs must be considered.Unlike Michael S. Gazzaniga's proposal in THE ETHICAL BRAIN, the consideration of euthansia was not an option.

"It's like a 115-year-old brain trying to power a 55-year-old!"In the Appendix to this book, she makes a point, "Do You Believe in Miracles?"In her case, a supporting husband, along with new drugs, and her high-level of capability have slowed down the progression of this disease. She makes suggestions for caregivers about what to do without demeaning the person.

DANCING WITH DEMENTIA is a vivid account of her tenacity in exploring the effects of memory loss.Ethical challenges are a part of life and emerges as the brain ages. Normal aging involves DNA in the early stages of forgetfulness. During the aging process, we have problems with short-term memory and being able to form new long-term memories. She shows what it is like to live with dementia, the exhaustion of coping with simple tasks, and the many difficulties in communication.Even a simple TMJ probe can cause major problems if the surgeon hits the wrong nerve, causing paralysis of that side of the face and possibly making the patient unable to speak clearly.

Like Christine Bryden, as we get older, it is necessary to keep a positive attitude and believe in miracles.

Product Description
How do we motivate ourselves and others to take action or change behavior in response to the threat of dementia - a threat that may or may not be relevant to everyone? Yet, with such high stakes and devastating outcomes, how can we ignore those methods that could be useful in heading off this dreaded scourge? Longtime neurologist Robert Levine argues we cannot continue the way we have, pretending that dementia cannot happen to us. The earlier the campaign is initiated to repel and defend against the threat of dementia, the greater the chances the combatant will emerge victorious. Dementia is merciless, comes in various forms, and does not necessarily discriminate, so taking action early is one of our best defenses. Once dementia has taken hold, however, there are considerable challenges for both the sufferer and his or her loved ones. Levine urges us to take action to prevent the onset of dementia, but also caringly discusses ways to handle it once it takes root. As American society continues to grow older, tackling one of the more confusing and frightening diseases becomes a more urgent need. This book urges understanding, offers preventative measures, considers various treatments, and looks to the future to see where we might be headed. In a new afterword, Levine updates the state of the research into dementia, its causes and constitution, and considers the various approaches both the medical community and everyday people can take to deal with it. ... Product Description
Among the most frustrating challenges for any health care professional are treating and alleviating the distress of an agitated patient with dementia—especially compelling in the midst of today’s unprecedented population explosion among adults over age 65. For the first time ever, people age 85 and older represent the fastest-growing segment of our population.

As we find ways to meet this challenge, we are also transforming how we think about aging. Instead of the pejorative term "senility," which implies that simply to be old is to be infirm, we refer to the ABCs of geriatric psychiatry: disturbances in (A)ffect, (B)ehavior, and (C)ognition, which are not normal at any age.

This compact volume addresses (B)ehavior. This remarkable monograph offers practical direction on assessing and managing agitation in patients with dementia. It identifies and diagnoses the multiple types of agitation in dementia patients. It also explains how to look for and treat the underlying medical etiologies, and recommends treatment and management techniques—everything from epidemiology and neurochemistry to behavior assessment scales, medications, psychotherapy, and bright light therapy. Furthermore, this encouraging work shows that successful outcomes—with response rates as high as 70%—can be achieved with a systemic approach, involving both patient and caregiver, that includes cognitive, behavioral, psychodynamic, and reminiscence therapies.

This book will appeal to a wide audience of geriatric psychiatrists, primary care physicians and internists, general practitioners, nurses, social workers, psychologists, pharmacists, and mental health care workers and practitioners. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it
I was looking forward to reading this. My mother was recently diagnosed with with Alzheimer's and I was looking for information on how other families coped with deciding to move someone with dementia who may or may not be willing to move. This book really deals with the move once the decision was made. It does not address the nitty gritty process of coming to the conclusion that the mother would be better off in a home dedicated to dementia patients. The decisions are agonizing and that point seems to be glossed over a bit with a couple of pages on guilt and sort of summed up with "it just doesn't work for our world and our lives." I do not fault the writer's decision by any stretch of the imagination. Caring for an Alzheimer's patient at home would tax even the strongest of souls. I don't know if I am equipped to handle it. But I really would have liked a more day-to-day chronicle of what went into the process of deciding on an assisted living community rather than taking her into one of their homes. It is very touching in parts but it was not the book I thought it was going to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loving Memories
I read about this little book in Kathleen Parker's column and ordered it. I am 78 years old and thought maybe I should see what this was all about. I loved it and it brought back many memories in regards to my own Mother.I to have many things I have saved and some time I think I should get rid of some of it but these are the precious memories that children remember when they look through this things when a parent dies. I am going to give this little book to my daughter to read. This was a remarkable family and the way they took care of their mother at the end was so sweet and tender and I kept thinking what remarkable children this Mother & Father have raised. I am sure they were so proud. I read this book in one evening with a few tears here and there. Memories are something we all wish would last forever but as you get older sometime they fad and we need little reminders. Just fill your life with love and that can never be taken away even if your memory fads.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compassionate Pragmatism
Sally Hughes Smith's first-person narrative walks us along a path of joy, loss, love, and acceptance."The Circle" is a soul-searching blend of romantisim and pragmatism in which she shares with us the compassionate plan of action that she and her family implemented to cope with what is becoming a crisis for more and more families. As a practicing psychotherapist I have recommended her book to many of my collegues working with families who have loved ones diagnosed with Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. This book is destined to become a useful tool for most, if not all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars The circle reviewed
A warm, positive, honest account of the emotional journey of dealing with a parent who is aging with memory loss.Sally wrote this as a diary and friends suggested she publish it.Everyone has something to learn from this book as we are all aging.I recommend that health professionals read this , esp medical students but really it applies to all families as we will all have to deal with the loss of a parent at some stage.A very worthwhile book, and it makes a great gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Along with the furniture....
I read Sally's book and immediately passed it on to my mother. Aside from enjoying the family bits, it prompted her to make sure certain aspects of her will were in place. Sally's gifts as a writer are apparent in her anecdotal treatment of her response along with her family's to her mother's disease. She brings light to the dark and in the end alerts us to our final responsibility as a parent. ... Read more

Product Description
Jolene Brackey has a vision. A vision that will soon look beyond the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and focus more of our energy on creating moments of joy. When a person has short-term memory loss, his life is made up of moments. But if you think about it, our memory is made up of moments, too. We are not able to create a perfectly wonderful day with someone who has dementia, but it is absolutely attainable to create a perfectly wonderful moment; a moment that puts a smile on their face, a twinkle in their eye, or triggers a memory. Five minutes later, they won’t remember what you did or said, but the feeling you left them with will linger.

Brackey has broken down the learning process into the five sections of the expanded third edition of Creating Moments of Joy for the Person with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Within those sections are smaller steps. At the end of each step is a place where you can journal your thoughts, solutions, and treasures to help you achieve the overall goal of creating many moments of joy for the person with dementia, and for you!

The five sections of Creating Moments of Joy: (1)Understand the person with Alzheimer’s;(2)Powerful Tools That Create Positive Outcomes;(3)Let’s Talk Communication; (4) Memory Enhanced Environments; (5) Enhanced Moments. ... Read more

Product Description
There have been few research projects that have attempted to involve people with dementia in the collection and application of research information. The contributors to this book describe the skills that researchers and care staff need, and the methods they can use, when seeking to draw out and validate the views of people with dementia successfully. They also discuss the ways in which such views can be included in debates about dementia methodology and policy.

The book focuses on a number of projects that have taken different approaches to working with people with dementia in research. It includes a chapter examining the difficult process of interviewing people with dementia whose first language is not English and a chapter describing a project which encourages people with dementia to participate in the analysis of the research findings. This varied and innovative book will help those in the fields of health and social policy, dementia research and dementia care to hear the voices of people with dementia more clearly, and to include their opinions more effectively in the provision of services. ...
