Product Description
When you have depersonalization disorder, nothing seems real. You may feel detached from reality, even from your own thoughts, as though you are going through the motions of living without ever being truly connected to your experiences. Whether your depersonalization developed after a traumatic experience or is something you've always lived with, this book can help you reconnect with life again.

Overcoming Depersonalization Disorder can help you diagnose the type and degree of your depersonalization disorder, come to understand why it developed, and cope with your symptoms using practical skills drawn from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). Ready to feel real again? Put the practical skills in this book to work in your life right now and start reintegrating yourself back into the world and reconnecting to your own vibrant thoughts and feelings.

A bold, yet wise approach... [that] can fundamentally change the life direction of people struggling with this debilitating disorder. Highly recommended.

Product Description
Feeling Unreal is the first book to reveal what depersonalization disorder is all about. This important volume explores not only depersonalization, but the philosophical and literary implications of selflessness as well, while providing the latest research, possible treatments, and strategies for living and thriving when life seems 'unreal.' For those who still believe that such experiences are still a part of something else, that depersonalization is just a symptom and not a disorder in its own right, Feeling Unreal presents compelling evidence to the contrary. This book provides long-awaited answers for people suffering from depersonalization disorder and their loved ones, for mental health professionals, and for all students of the condition, while serving as a wake up call to the medical community at large. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Better for the professional
This is a really good book; however, it is written on a more professional level like another person said. If you are educated in college you can probably read and understand. If not, pass on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I have been living with anxiety and panic disorder for almost a year and in that time I suffered from depersonalization/derealization for more than a month. When it started I thought it would be something that would go away in a few days, but 1 week turned into 2 and that turned into a month etc.I would like to say that I do not have depersonalization disorder, but I got this book to understand more about the disorder. It's hard to describe to someone the feeling of depersonalization or derealization if they have never experienced it.I became obsessed with what was happening to me and questioning everyone( friends, family, doctors) about when it would go away?, if at all.The book includes everything to do with depersonalization disorder, including the unfortunate fact that it does not get the same kind of attention as Anxiety and depression due, real life cases of people living with this disorder, medications that may or may not help, and other ways to cope.In my case, when I started not paying attention to it and not letting it bother me, it began to go away slowly, then altogether. It is possible to live life like this, it just takes looking a things a different way.I commend those who actually have this disorder.I just got a tiny fragment of what they go through.

4-0 out of 5 stars loved this book, finally some answers for me
I really loved this book. I have had DP/DR for the last 4 years. It is incredibly difficult to live with. The vast majority of doctors, therapists, and psychiatrists have had no idea what I was talking about- it's so hard to describe. Finally I have a name for my disorder. The only reason I took off 1 star was because the medication trials they describe were so limited- 14 people doesn't constitute a reasonable study.Overall, loved this book.Really helpful to me and easy to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Depersonalization.
This book has a lot of useful information. It also had a few chapters that I feel could have been left out. Particularity the sections about DP in philosophy, and the arts. I also feel there should be more practical self-help information than there is.

Overall, if you, or someone you know, suffers from DP, this is a good introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go Read Ken Wilber!!!!
I read some of this book in the preview, and have not purchased it and gave it 5 stars in order to not badly effect its rating.I only posted in this because I see people questioning for the cure of some disorder that seems to be beyond reach.I've read about depersonalization in other books, such as Mature Thought in Adulthood, by Susan Cook Greutner one of the most widely respected researchers on ego development.Depersonalization, according to some theorists may be very very normal depending on the circumstances!! For example, Michael Mahoney has stated that it is normal for a person in the midst of what he calls a personal revolution to experience depersonalization commonly!I suggest reading the chapter on personal revolutions in his book Constructive Psychotherapy.Furthermore, the question of identity is an age old question, it's not anything new, and because psychology is largely socio-historical, the fast changing society of today's age would more than account for depersonalization. There are many ways to view the self, and many different ways which are correct, thus the person suffering from depersonalization would most likely be creative, perhaps too creative.Philosopher/integral psychologist Ken Wilber is one of the only psychologists to address this issue in a more than sufficient and satisfying way.Though it is hard to actually grasp what his theory truly is because of its complexity and his numerous footnotes( in which there are great treasures of knowledge) his books give the greatest clarity to the issues of identity to this date, and has contributed so greatly to the field that his accomplishments are compared to Freud's.I suggest first his book A Brief History of Everything, for the more advanced reader I suggest Integral Psychology. If you just want the basics and some recommendations I suggest No Boundary.A quick warning.Because of it's appeal his work sometimes makes cult's of people, blindly believing and not thinking for themselves, despite this do not be scared away by those speaking of some of it's cult-like followers, it is one of the greatest inclusions to anyone's personal development. Also for those interested in just inner deadness...very good books are written on this in Gestalt and Humanistic psychologies.I recommend Zen Buddhism and psychoanalysis by Erich Fromm which talks about the "maladie du siecle" which is the inner deadness I mentioned.Hope this helps for the reader looking for answers. ... Product Description
Depersonalization disorder (DPD) is a dissociative disorder in which the sufferer is affected by persistent or recurrent feelings of depersonalization and/or derealization. The symptoms include a sense of automation, going through the motions of life but not experiencing it, feeling as though one is in a movie, feeling as though one is in a dream, feeling a disconnection from one's body; out-of-body experience, a detachment from one's body, environment and difficulty relating oneself to reality. Occasional moments of mild depersonalization are normal; strong, severe persistent or recurrent feelings are not. A diagnosis of a disorder is made when the dissociation is persistent and interferes with the social and occupational functions necessary to everyday living. Depersonalization Disorder is thought to be largely caused by severe traumatic lifetime events including childhood sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, accidents, war, and torture. Drug use (primarily cannabis) may be a mitigating factor. It is unclear whether genetics play a role, however there is evidence of physiological factors with respect to DPD. ... Read more
