Williams Syndrome (WS) is a developmental disorder with a unique cognitive profile. Previous studies underlined the existence of a strong dissociation between language and other cognitive functions; this non uniform pattern has also been observed in the domain of spatial cognition with difficulties in configural processing and part integration tasks. Paradoxically, some authors have described a selective preservation of face recognition in WS subjects while these abilities typically rely on configural analysis. Our main objective was then to further explore configural face processing in children and adolescents with WS. Face processing competences were evaluated in a group of WS children through a series of experiments which tapped different aspects of configural processing. Performance of WS individuals was compared to that of a group of children individually matched for chronological age (CA-matches) and to that of another group matched for mental age (MA-matches). Taken together, the results obtained in the current study revealed that some but not all aspects of configural processing undergo an abnormal developmental course in the WS pathology. ... Read more
