2-0 out of 5 stars Not a miracle
I borrowed this book from the library. I normally do not purchase books without first reading them. This is not one of those books that will make it onto my bookshelf. It is not the miracle it claims to be.

When undertaking a lifestyle change to control blood sugar the key thing to remember is that "Your Mileage May Vary."

Buying a good meter and taking your blood sugar often will give you a far better feel for what works for you than the advice of any book.

As much as I love a serving of steel cut oats (2 carb units) with a serving of blueberries (1 carb unit) for breakfast, this kind of breakfast will send my blood sugar unacceptably high for the vast majority of the day unless I'm willing to put in a fair amount of time into some heavy cardio and resistance work. Instead, I eat eggbeaters scrambled with spinach and mushrooms with Canadian bacon on the side and exercise moderately. That is what works for me.

Grain and legume based carbs, regardless of how unrefined (I have bought and ground my own wheat for years) they happen to be, will cause *my* blood sugar to go unacceptably high and stay there for too long if consumption is not followed by a significant level of activity. I really have to watch the fruit and starchy vegetables as well. I stick to berries and low carb veggies, but even then I'll see a jump unless I chase with Metformin or activity.

If this plan were to work for me, it would be imperative that I follow it exactly. People talk about the amazing weight loss after spending time at the LCA as if it's a miracle. Anyone is going to lose in a highly controlled environment like they offer. You will continue to lose if you continue to control your environment to that level. There's no "miracle" about it. Of course, everyone needs to eat better; I'm just not convinced that vegan is the only path, much less the best path to metabolic control of blood sugar for a diabetic.

5-0 out of 5 stars book
I am starting the diet in the morning cause I need to lose weight and get control over my diabetes. This book makes a lot of sence.

5-0 out of 5 stars This miracle program returned my hope!
How valuable is hope? How much would you pay to buy it?This book and the LCA miracle program it describes bought hope back into my life. The book details exactly the program I was introduced to late last year. I entered the program in Oklahoma completely demoralized with the inability to control my type 2 diabetes. For 15 years I had battled this disease but it was beating me and all the doctors, drugs and insulin that I was using to fight it. My future was destined to be like my parents and my brother an early death due to diabetes related heart disease.

Not anymore! I have lost weight, dropped almost all medications and at 51 years old, I am in the best physical shape ever. The LCA program is the reason for my life changing experience and I recomend this book to anyone else who needs a little hope back in thier lives. You can beat this disease and you too will find this program is the answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a Miracle
I have PCOS and insulin resistance. In the book it tells you how insulin resistance is the culprit behind diabetes and PCOS.I was literally teetering on the edge of diabetes and I didn't know what to do.I am so glad I found this book. The 30 day Diabetes Miracle gives you very sound advice on what to do to reverse diabetes and possibly other health conditions you may have.If you have the heart to truly want to be healthy then this is the book for you.By following a low fat, plant based diet combined with exercise you can acheive your ultimate health goals.

A few years ago if I would have known this book was telling me to become a vegan then I would have never bought it.But now that my health is in crisis, I am willing to do whatever it takes to be healthy. After reading the book and really understanding what is going on inside my body I see why I'm in this condition.

I highly recommend this book.If you are afraid of the plant based diet, I would just try it for a week, you never know you may really enjoy it.The recipes in the book are wonderful!I do not feel deprived in the least bit.In fact I am not hungry like I used to be at all.I've only been practicing this lifestyle for 2 weeks and I have already lost 7 lbs. and I have more energy.I feel refreshed and light!I never would have thought I would become a vegan in my wildest dreams but I have come to love it and I look forward to a long, healthy, vibrant life for myself and my family!

This book is truly a miracle!

5-0 out of 5 stars My "Life Miracle"
The authors have presented a very human, hopeful and encouraging approach to managing and eliminating diabetes symptoms and complications.

The 30 Day Diabetes Miracle is permeated with motivation, encouraging optimism, and dotted with humor.Sample recipes and suggested physical activities provide an easy start toward better health for diabetics.
The book provides a broad understanding of the mechanisms contributing to diabetes. Technical explanations are presented in a manner easily understood. This book is inspirational!
Following the dietary suggestions in this book, my "life miracle" was to reduce my weight by twenty two pounds, walking three miles each day, looking forward to exercising, and by reducing my insulin use from thirty units per day to zero.I have stopped using antacids and I wake up each day well rested with energy to face a great day.
To attend a lecture by the authors is incredibly enlightening. But at the very least, read this book!

Book Description

After Gretchen Becker was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1996, she educated herself on every aspect of this chronic condition — by reading medical and scientific books and journals, talking with doctors and listening to her own body. In 2001, she marshaled everything she had learned as a “patient-expert” into the first edition of this book, which she has now completely updated and revised. The First Year®—Type 2 Diabetes uniquely guides you step-by-step through your first year with diabetes, walking you through everything you need to learn and do each day of your first week after diagnosis, each subsequent week of the first month, and each subsequent month of the crucial first year.
In clear, concise, accessible language, Becker covers a wide range of practical, medical, and lifestyle issues, beginning with coming to terms with your diagnosis and then moving on to subjects including:
• Choosing the diet that is best for you
• The role of exercise
• Daily blood-glucose testing routines and understanding lab tests
• Medications and supplements
• Networking with others

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide for the Recently Diagnosed
I bought this guide the day I was diagnosed with Diabetes. It's guidance has really helped me get oriented and begin to properly deal with it.The writing is professional, yet comes from the point of view of a person that isn't just a physician, she HAS diabetes.

The chapters are easy to read and each has a summary at the end.She gives the reader the choice of getting the basic information first, then presenting the clinical reasons to be reviewed in more detail later.

I purchased this book for my mom who is 74 years old and has just been diagnosed with Type II diabetes.I myself did not read it, but she says that she could not have gotten along without it.Being newly diagnosed, she had no idea about counting carbs and food exchanges, etc. and she said this book really helped her understand all of those things. My mom also recently visited a nutrionist who told her that she was really glad she had the book to refer to because it is perfect for people in her situation and provides the important information that newly diagnosed diabetics should know. She highly recommended the book, hence my reason for writing the review! ... "The Greeks and Romans knew about diabetes. Fortunately, the way they tested for the condition--by tasting the urine--has gone by the wayside." Diabetes for Dummies has the friendly, quirky style you expect from all the For Dummies books, but this is no skim-the-surface Diabetes 101. Rubin has packed this book with useful information, peppered with warm advice for enjoying your life while living with diabetes. One of his points is that although you'd rather not have this disease, you're lucky to have it now instead of a few decades ago, because today you can manage diabetes and live a productive, quality-filled life.

The book is divided into sections on "Dealing with the Onset of Diabetes," "How Diabetes Affects Your Body," "Managing Diabetes: The 'Thriving with Diabetes' Lifestyle Plan," and "Special Considerations for Living with Diabetes." Each chapter is packed with facts and strategies on topics such as monitoring, battling complications, medications, diet, and exercise. If you skim, it's an introduction to diabetes; if you read it carefully, it's a textbook. Web surfers will appreciate the "Dr. W.W. Web" appendix, where Rubin lists many useful diabetes Web sites. (If you'd rather click than type, you can visit Rubin's Web site, where he offers links to all the diabetes sites.) Also included is a mini-cookbook of multiethnic recipes from noted restaurants, mostly in San Francisco (with the restaurant address, in case you want to order instead of cook). --Joan PriceBook Description

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but incomplete
This book is very basic. I think it deals with the subject topic very well and it addresses the most basic components of the disease. I think another book that also addresses these issues with the exercise component explored in-depth. I would buy both, because a failure to come up with a practical plan for keeping your weight down means that these books are worthless. Suffers of this disease need every advantage, and dealing with the obesity issue is key.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution
The best book I have ever read on the subject. The fact that Dr. Bernstein has lived, studied, and found solutions for this disease makes this book a requirment. Anyone who wants to take command over this disease should get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution has given me back my life
I was diagnosed with prediabetes in the fall of 2007, after having suffered from severe and debilitating chronic fatique and nerve pain for almost a year. When I started checking my blood sugars, I was shocked to see how high they were and immediately started looking for a diet that could help me bring those numbers down.My doctor had recommended a low carb diet, so I looked here at Amazon and found Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution.I started his diet in October of 2007.

My blood sugars immediately came down, and my cholesterol and triglycerides have normalized -- total cholesterol has dropped from 241 to 172, LDL dropped from 161 to 94, HDL rose from 51 to 61, triglycerides dropped from 143 to 85.The nerve pain in my arm is now clearing up, I believe I had diabetic neuropathy and did not even know it before.

Dr. Bernstein's diet is not hard to follow, once you reduce your carb intake your carb cravings will diminish and you really don't miss the carbs. And your energy levels will skyrocket so you will have the ability to exercise again!Diabetes management that seemed impossible before will suddenly become possible again!

I'm so happy I found Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution -- he has literally given me back my life!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is life-saving!
There is a saying that the diabetes community knows only too well - your milage may vary (YMMV). This is certainly true when following any plan or program to manage your diagnosis. You must understand and experiment how your body will react based on your existing beta cells, pancreatic and liver function, other conflicting and supporting hormones etc. This book is completely open about these issues and about how to acheive basic control of your diabetes. Type 1, Type 2, Type 3 (hybrid types too) all types for that matter can use all of Dr. B's work. True it is a challenge to change your eating, exercise and social behaviors but it can be done. My heart goes out to vegetarians who have a harder time with more narrow options, but it can be done. This is not a program for rich people or poor people but sick people who will greatly benefit. If you can't afford the book go to Dr. B's website and there are large sections of the book available and the forum that his site links to and support is full of compassionate and helpful advice as well. Live longer! ... Read more

Book Description
At last! This special cookbook puts flavor and choice back on the menu for people with diabetes and their families
Betty Crocker, America's most trusted friend in the kitchen, has teamed up with the International Diabetes Center (IDC)--one of the leading medical centers--to create an indispensable source of easy-to-make recipes and up-to-the-minute food and nutrition information for the growing numbers of people who have diabetes, more than 15 million of them.
Here is the first cookbook to include recipes featuring Carbohydrate Choices--the new, simplified approach to meal planning recommended by the American Diabetes Association. For people who find diet exchanges too hard, too limiting or too much work, this new method is a real breakthrough. Each of the book's 140 recipes shows the number of Carbohydrate Choices per serving, so that planning the rest of the meal is easy. From Old-Time Beef and Vegetable Stew to Creamy Vanilla-Caramel Cheesecake, the recipes are made with everyday ingredients, including sugar. No food groups or ingredients are left out, so there's no need for anyone to feel deprived or restricted to a special diet. Food exchanges are also included, making it easy for those who still count calories.
Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook is also packed with expert medical and nutrition tips from Dr. Richard Bergenstal, an endocrinologist and diabetes doctor, and two registered nurses--invaluable for the newly diagnosed as well as for those who have been coping with diabetes for years. Throughout the book, real-life advice from people who have diabetes offers inspiration and great ideas on dealing with this chronic disease. When it comes to eating and living with diabetes, people need guidance and advice they can trust. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This cookbook is dangerous for diabetics
I received this cookbook as a gift so I can't offend the giver, but itis by far one of the worst cookbooks that a diabetic could possibly use.Not that it isn't pretty, and not that it doesn't contain many luscious looking dishes, but almost every recipe calls for either sugar or flour or other sugary or starchy ingredients -all catagoriesincluded, not just desserts - none of which a diabetic should ever eat. The somewhat confusing use of 'carbohydrate choices' is further dangerous, because one - and only one - 'carb choice' is worth 15 grams of actual carb and by combining several foods from this book into a singlemeal plan, one will be way over the limit for safety. The menu plans in the back of the book prove this - add up the number of carbohydrate choices in any one day's meal plan, and you get between 15 and 17 carb choices.Multiply that by 15 and you are looking at nearly 300 grams of carb a day. What people don't realize (because they have not been told by doctors and 'diabetes educators' who do not for some reason, continue their education in metabolism) is that the word SUGAR should be substituted for any carbohydrate. In fact,The American Diabetes Association is still using decades-old protocols which encourage huge amounts of carbs in a 'diabetic diet' that invariably fails to manage the disease.A safe and sensible diet for a diabetic either on or off insulin, must restrict sugar and starch of any kind because within minutes of hitting the bloodstream it all turns to pure glucoseand out of control insulin production -the cause of diabetes.Feedingyourself more sugar only hastens complications, and they can be very bad indeed. Virtually all good low carbohydrate diets restrict carbs (sugar!) to 50 or less per day - not 50 'choices' but 50 actual carbs.I myself, a diabetic, cannot tolerate more than 30 or 40 carbs a day to maintain decent blood glucose control, and less is better if I can do it. When a disease such as this has the potential to rob one of their eyesight, kidneys, limbs, and life itself if not properly managed - it is ludicrous to demand that one be allowed daily potatoes and pastas and cereals and sugary desserts. Anyone wishing to help themselves try and maintain safe blood glucose levels before it's too late should instead purchase 'Dr. Bernstein's Diabetic Solution' - a Type 1 diabetic himself, he has helped millions prolong their lives with proper diet.He doesn't sell anything, he doesn't do anything but be virtually the best diabetes doctor in this country.Another extremely informative and widely respected book is 'Good Calories' Bad Calories' by Gary Taubes.Other resources are all over the internet. One's life is worth the effort to do the research.

1-0 out of 5 stars Better Recipes on Internet for Free
I waited anxiously for the cookbook to arrive and I was extremely disappointed when it did. I did not find a single recipe I will ever use for my family. I have found extremely good recipes free on the internet and will continue to use the internet as a source for tasty healthy recipes rather than this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this cookbook!
The recipes in this cookbook have been delicious and my family enjoys them as well.I also like that it uses the carb choices, which I find an easier method than counting carbs.

2-0 out of 5 stars ok but not what I was looking for
I was hoping for more recipes for the average household trying to get
diabetes under control. I would not recommend this unless you can afford to buy off the wall products you don't normally keep in your house

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook
This cookbook is wonderful. The recipes are easy to make and taste great too.

Book Description

Offering new hope to millions, this new nutritional approach to diabetes will dramatically alter the way we think about treating the disease

Until now, most health professionals have considered diabetes a one-way street. Once you developed it, you were stuck with it—and you could anticipate one complication after another, from worsening eyesight and nerve symptoms to heart and kidney problems.

Enter Dr. Neal Barnard, who through a series of groundbreaking studies, the latest funded by the National Institutes for Health, has shown it doesn’t have to be that way. By following the diet outlined in this book, readers can control blood sugar three times more effectively than with the American Diabetes Association’s diet and, beyond that, improve their bodies’ ability to respond to insulin—in effect reversing the defining symptom of the disease. And there’s more. Study participants lost weight, were able to cut back on and sometimes even discontinue medications, and left behind tedious exchange plans in favor of delicious foods in generous portions.

It’s a new way to treat diabetes. It’s about time.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book
Reading this book has been a life alternating experience. It is one of the most important books I have ever read.
If you are diabetic, or have heart problems, this book could save your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Neal Barnards Program does work.
I am a 66 year old nurse who has, make that HAD, type 2 diabetes which came from steroids I had to take when I had chemotherapy for cancer 6 years age. I also had moderate pain from neuropathies and osteoarthritis.
I did some research before going on this program and
found a lot information to back it up.
After following this diet breakthrough for only a few weeks I had to stop my amaryl. It is now 3 months later and my blood sugars are perfectly normal without medication and I'm amazed to find that the chronic pain I had for the last 5 or 6 years is gone.

Dr. Barnards book is easy to understand and his program is easy to follow. It has changed the way I eat forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
I've read so many "medical miracles" books, that I apporached this title with reserve...Although I wasn't specifically looking in it for a diet but more as a way of lowering my blood glucose levels, it was a big surprise how a pure vegan diet can acomplish both weight loss and lower glucose!

The ideas are presented in a very clear style, with strong scientific bases and properly conducted research. There's still room for improvement, like more examples of foods, more lab testing evidence, etc, but these are very recent findings that take time to document.

Definitevely an excelent book for a very easy way to better your body.Strongly recommended for overweight and diabete 2 type people.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book and diet is changing my health for the good.
As a Venture Capitalist, I see all kinds of plans come into my office. Fads, weird science, all of it.Being on the skeptical side, I bought this bought with the notion of adding it to the pile in my quest to get control of my health. This book, put simply, is amazing. Some people have dinged it because they believe it is a political message about being a Vegan. I don't much care because, for me, the has worked.
My blood sugars are now between 4.5 - 7 all the time 2 hours after I eat. My morning fasting sugar is between 4.2 - 5.7 all the time.My BP is now normal. My HDL/LDL readings are excellent. My tingling in the nerves is gone. My sleep cycle is back to normal.I've lost 15 pounds in 5 weeks.

The net of this book could be Go Vegan, but it is more. This is a very very well written book which makes a good case via science why this can help people.I've found tons of foods I like to eat, discovered some great 'veggie' things and generally am a much more health person.

It is worth every penny.

This book is not very helpful. The information, once it has been learned---ELSEWHERE--or, far away, long ago, on a distant planet---I can't imagine anyone needing this kind of help to do these conversions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetic Exchanges
Everyone should have one of these. Especially those new to the diabetic lifestyle. Packed with information and helps one make sensible food choices to keep blood sugar in check.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pocket sized companion
A handy pocket sized companion for Type 2 diabetics who want to know more about portion sizes and food equivalents and exchanges.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for exchange use only.
This little booklet is great for those who are going to track diabetic exchanges, and it gives you a good idea of typical/appropriate portion sizes. But unless you're really going to track exchanges (I use a different method), skip it. No frills, but does the one job well.

1-0 out of 5 stars amazon: ripoff extraordinary
book was quoted to me at one price, billed at a higher price. i cancelled order but amazon shipped it any way.
i couldn't understand return instructions so i wrote amazon twice. weeks have gone by with no response.
i got in touch with dhl and they instructed me how to return book. good thing cause amazon couldn't be bothered.
i returned the unopened package. the box was crushed so badly dhl couldn't scan the shipping label.
haven't heard a word from amazon until this review solicitation.
bottom line is don't do business with amazon they are a ripoff and are clueless as how to properly do business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive & Helpful
After just being diagnosed with Type II Diabetes, I was looking for information. This book was extremely helpful.A must read for those who want to take on participation in improving their own health!

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works!
I found the book to be informative on many things I hadn't known, including helping me understand the mechanism of diabetes itself.Clear, simple language made it a lot easier than I thought it would be.

I followed the menus and recipes completely, which turned out to be somewhat difficult as i had never previously used so much fresh produce, and it takes longer to prepare than tossing something in the microwave or stopping in at a fast food place.I was never hungry, however, and my craving for sweets disappeared during the first couple of weeks.

It has a great resource section.

The single most important thing about the book? It worked for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really does work!!!!!!
One of my children checked this book out of the library a few years ago when I was diagnosed with type II diabetes. I was very faithful about following the guidelines ,exercising, diet, vitamins and supplements. You have to be. I refused to go on medication. I lost 20 lbs. and my blood sugar readings were always within safe range --- and never above 140 after meals. I bought the book for both my brother recently (diagnosed and is on oral med and insulin!!! ) and my sister who is on oral med (and has been for several years).
I recommend anyone with diabetes buy this book --- but PLEASE talk to your doctor before trying anything new!! GOOD-LUCK!! ... Read more

Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies is more than a compilation of recipes. Thebook also gives guidelines for "what, when, and how much" to eat, including tipsfor visualizing portions (an ounce of meat is the size of a matchbox; an ounceof cheese is the size of a domino; a medium potato is the size of a computermouse). You'll get shopping and cooking tips and illustrated food-preparationsteps to help novice cooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars want to get scared?
Read the part where they discribe what happens to you as you get diabetic, and you will want to eat better, and loose weight.

Some very serious complications, so it is worth buying if you want to know everything about diabetes." This is the first "Dummies" book I have purchased. Who wants to buy a book that call's you a dum head?

3-0 out of 5 stars A good start
i bought this book a couple of years ago, because my partner is diabetic and i wanted to know how to cook for her. the recipes in here are all good, and sound delicious, but most are too involved to be practical for everyday cooking. more helpful would have been how to make regular foods diabetic-friendly. there are some good chapters explaining diabetes and carbs and all that, but the actual cookbook part could use some work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Unfortunately, my husband is a very picky eater and didn't care for many of the recipes but I enjoyed them (him being the diabetic).Very good information in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My girlfriend who I gave it to loves it!!
Gave as gift to someone who just got diagnosed with the possibility of getting diabetes. But now I want my own copy. Just to be informed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Misleading Book
This book didn't give enough information, and it was very misleading.

Look for Dr. McDougall's books on Amazon. Or, if you google Dr. McDougall, you can go to his website and see what he has to say about diabetes. Numerous studies show about 75 percent of type 2 diabetes is completely curable - within 10 days - by changing your diet. Period. You can come off all medication and insulin. He gives the information you need, completely free, on his website. Use his method, and you'll soon see your blood sugars return to normal . . . but then the various companies that make a fortune off diabetes will suffer.

Another thing about this dummies book: It's chock-full of ads. The author heavily peppers his writing with all sorts of product endorsements and gets kickbacks for them.

You might want to read Dr. Neal Barnard's Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes Without Drugs before you jump to conclusions. He is president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (a nonprofit organization with a lot of highly respected members.) He has a lot of respectable physicians endorsing his work. I encourage anyone reading this to search for his book on Amazon. You'll find it doesn't have any ads and no kickbacks from the big drug companies like the "Dummies" books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Help
Recently purchased to cook some meals for a neighbor who's wife passed away on Jan. 10, 2008. Was a huge help as he is diabetic and has heart disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend!
I finally found a cookbook that is healthy, user friendly & tastes like gourmet food. The recipes are all delicious & full of flavor using herbs, seasonings & rich non-fat foods that enhance the palate. I'd highly recommend this book. Since using the recipes & exercise, I have lost weight (easily done this time) & my blood glucose has decreased immensly. The only caveat is the expense involved in eating low-fat/non-fat foods. A bit pricey to keep on hand fresh veg, fruit, herbs, etc... But the benefits outweigh the cost of foods.

3-0 out of 5 stars The 30 Day Diabetes Miracle is more effective at controlling blood sugar.
This book was fine, but I highly recommend the 30-Day Diabetes Miracle series for managing your diabetes and creating a whole new healthy lifestyle! It's more in tune with "good carbs."

Amazon.com
Two colleagues of the late Dr. Robert Atkins take on the obesity epidemic's deadly twin: type 2 diabetes. Dr. Mary Vernon and Jacqueline Eberstein, RN, adapt the carb-cutting, fat-allowing Atkins nutritional approach as a preemptive strike against this fast-growing killer. Diabetes--defined here as a condition in which glucose or blood sugar is above the normal range--is viewed as a preventable problem. "What we hope we have created in this book is a realistic and practical guide to wiping out type 2, one person at a time." Since obesity is the major risk factor for diabetes, they begin with the "fat lie" (i.e., the belief that fat causes obesity) to voice the Atkins mantra: low fat means high carbs and high carbs are broken down into sugar. With a convincing mix of essay/picture testimonials, clinical studies, quizzes, checklists, and menu planners and recipes, Vernon and Eberstein make the case for diet and lifestyle changes to alter the metabolism of those at risk for diabetes. They have done a yeoman's job of translating Atkins'smedical nutrition advice into a step-by-stepprogram. One can quibble about their missionary zeal or the omnipresent eggs in the breakfast sample menus. At times, the scientific data are overly detailed or hidden within a quiz. Thankfully, there is a spot-on summary of the book's paradigm-busting ideas in the appendix.-- Barbara MackoffBook Description

The statistics are staggering. Thirteen million Americans have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes; another 5.2 million don't know that they have it. During the past thirty years the diabetes rate has tripled, and each year about 200,000 people die from complications of the disease. The Centers for Disease Control project that one out of every three children born in the year 2000 will develop the disease. But Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable. Find out how you can avoid becoming a statistic.

As a respected physician and pioneer in the field of complementary medicine, Dr. Robert C. Atkins recognized early on that diabetes and obesity are twin epidemics, and that the way to reverse both is to permanently change the way people eat. Yet much of the mainstream medical establishment continues to advocate the treatment of diabetes with insulin and other drugs, while recommending a diet high in carbohydrates including sugar which raises your blood sugar. What you'll learn from reading Atkins Diabetes Revolution is that rather than correcting your metabolism, such a diet can actually increase your risk of developing diabetes -- and heart disease.

The Atkins Blood Sugar Control Program (ABSCP) helps you identify the metabolic signposts that indicate trouble long before the onset of Type 2 diabetes so you can stop it in its tracks. If you already have the disease, the ABSCP offers you and your physician a strategy for weight management and blood-sugar control, while minimizing your exposure to drugs.

Atkins Diabetes Revolution presents a comprehensive lifestyle program, including diet, exercise, and nutrient supplementation. The book also contains meal plans, recipes, a fitness routine, and case studies. This groundbreaking book, a fitting tribute to Dr. Atkins, tackles one of the greatest health challenges you and your family may ever face.

This diet is not for everyone; check with your doctor before starting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Miracle!!
My husband has had type two diabetes for 15 years. He also had irritable bowel syndrome and was tired all the time . After starting this diet he has cut his insulin in half, lost 25 pounds and the IBS disappeared!! I used to think Atkins was crazy but now I'm a believer!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sugar under control
Six weeks ago I was in the hospital.I never knew I was a diabetic and was juicing to lose weight and lower my blood pressure.Over a period of time my sugar had climbed to over 850, I had a DKA seizure and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.I was told that I am very lucky to be alive. They put me on 30 units of insulin a day and told me I would need this the rest of my life.

Following the guidance in this book my sugar is now consistently 100, my blood pressure is coming down dramatically and I feel better and have more energy than I have in years.Have also lost 15 pounds.

When you look at the progression of diabetes in our society today and its exponential growth this book should be required reading in our high schools.

By the way, I no longer need insulin and able to maintain my sugar level at 100 using the principles in this book.It can save your life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Co-author Dr. Vernon needs a new approach...
...to dieting and to writing. As a previous reviewer alluded to, this book would have been much better had Dr. Atkins been able to finish himself. However, what we are left with is a co-author MD who's personality is as cold as ice; not to mention condescending and disrespectful. This shines through in the tone of the writing. Furthermore, how can we take diet advice from someone who is obese herself? There are plenty of other well-written low-carb diet books.Try another. ... Read more

Book Description
Diabetes has become a seemingly unstoppable national epidemic, affecting more than twenty million Americans. Conventional wisdom calls it incurable, but renowned Dr. Gabriel Cousens counters that claim with this breakthrough book. There Is a Cure for Diabetes lays out a three-week plan for reversing the negative genetic expression of diabetes to a physiology of health and well-being. Dr. Cousens’s method, widely tested at his famous Tree of Life centers, is to reset the DNA through green juice fasting and a 100% organic, nutrient-dense, vegan, low-glycemic, low-insulin-scoring, and high-mineral diet of living foods in the first twenty-one days. Both practical and inspirational, the book explains how to abandon the widespread “culture of death”–symbolized by addictive junk food–that fosters diabetes in favor of a more natural, nurturing approach. The program renders insulin and related medicines unnecessary within four days as the blood sugar drops to normal levels; and the diabetic shifts into a non-diabetic physiology within two weeks. The third week focuses on live-food preparation, featuring 100 delicious raw recipes. Dr. Cousens emphasizes regular consultations, monitoring blood chemistries, and emotional support, and includes a one-year support program to help maintain a diabetes-free life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!On the Program for 6 Weeks
I received this book about 6 weeks ago and have been following the suggestions by Dr. Cousens.I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 6 years ago with an A1c of almost 14.I tried vegetarian diets, all the way to Atkins, with little success.I was taking 30u of Novolog and 40-50u of Lantus daily. At my previous doctor's visit my A1c was 8.4 (with my lowest ever at 7.4) and my cholesteral was 324! I tried Lipitor but gave it up because of how it made me feel. Now, I'm shooting about 10u of Novolog and 20-25 of Lantus daily.I just returned from my appointment today and my A1c is 6.8!And my cholesteral is 164!!!I am a believer!I am probably only 90% raw and I still do put a little feta/parmesan in my salads, but I am so committed to this new way of being!I also do not use soy products, wheat or breads...My new goals are to have an A1c <6 and maintain healthy cholesteral levels. All in all this is a great book and is full of helpful ideas!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Cousens is my HERO!
I bought this book 3 weeks ago and I devoured it. I was totally inspired to convert my kitchen to raw foods and within 5 days I was off my oral meds following Dr. Cousens protocol. 3 weeks later, my FBS's are reliably under 80 and I feel like I am 25 again. Plus I am LOVING the food! There are some good starter recipes, but I would also get Dr. C's other book which has more recipes.
This book is FULL of great information that I found both empowering and accurate. I work in alternative health and appreciate Dr. Cousen's sane approach- he is not just talking about raw foods, but about mitigating mycotoxins that create disease. I have not found other raw food authors who understand and/or address this aspect of the disease cycle and I believe it is critical to maintaining/reclaiming vibrant health.
Although converting to raw IS a commitment of time and can feel isolating because it seems extreme to some, the benefits are undeniable, the food is fabulous and I can't understand why anyone would NOT want to eat this way, unless of course, they are OK with being unhealthy for the rest of their lives, going from medication to medication, injecting, and ultimately suffering the downstream consequences of chronic disease, amputations, blindness, and more. I know- I watched my brother die of diabetes complications. For me, that was an unacceptable future and I am so grateful to have found a key to turning my course around.
I feel like someone just handed me my drug free, healthy future on a silver platter. And THAT is indeed delicious!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I got this book the day it came out and read it cover to cover in a weekend.I'm now on my second read thru.In my opinion, it contains a lot of thoroughly researched information about diabetes and how it is becoming an epidemic for everyone.I don't have diabtes but I know lots a people who do.This book gives you steps to prevent and cure this disease. It also outlines the good and bad foods that will raise insulin levels and supplements to take that help with this regimine. The allopathic doctors don't have a clue on how to stop or prevent this diease but this book will tell you how to cure diabetes and stop or lower your meds within 30 days.Yes, following a raw food diet can be a challenge but it is do-able.Start slow and add to it everyday. It takes 21 days to change or create a habit.

There are lots of great raw food recipes in this book and if you buy his other book "Rainbow Green Life Food Cuisine" you could be on your way to stopping or preventing diabetes.

3-0 out of 5 stars It was OK, but save your $
I read through this book in two days. This book is definately geared toward type-2 diabetics. There is a lot of good information, and unlike a lot of other books its not just a marketing ploy for Cousen's retreats/products.The raw food diet does seem to restore healthy functioning, but I cannot see living "the culture of life" )as Cousens calls 80+% raw vegan) forever.I began eating 70-80% raw about 2 months after being diagnosed with type-1 (insulin dependent) diabetes and after just 1-week of eating this way my insulin needs dropped way down. You can buy the book if you want to- as I said, its informative... but living and eating 80+% raw is EXTREMELY difficult without A LOT of support.

**The book is OKAY, 3-stars means OKAY.I was eating raw before I read this book. But honestly, people shouldn't buy this book expecting an easy solution. They are going to need a ton of support from family, friends and their doctors in order to make the raw food diet work.I don't think that most type-2 diabetics have the strength/desire to live the
