5-0 out of 5 stars A must -read for anyone with diabetes...
This is one of the best books about diabetes and people living with diabetes that I have read in a very long time.As a person living with the disease for over 40 years, it was such an inspiration to read about other people that have lived with it even longer than I and to read about others who are dealing with the same issues that I deal with all the time.It is so important for people to know that diabetes does not have to be a death sentence...it is a manageable disease and the proof of that is in reading this book.

I suppose I shouldn't brag too much since I'm quoted quite a bit in this book, but it is truly a book for anyone with diabetes. It is filled with amazing suggestions, (yes, even I learned some new things!) and it should encourage all who take the time to really absorb the contents.

Dr. Sheri and Dr. Steve are both wonderful people and certainly experienced in their field as they, too live with diabetes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this if you or a family member has type 1 diabetes
As the mother of two young daughters with type 1 diabetes, I've read a lot of websites and books with highly technical medical information about diabetes.

It was refreshing to sit down and read a book full of stories. When's the last time you read a book about diabetes that was actually hard to put down? This is a book like that.

One can't help but be encouraged by stories like those of the two brothers, ages 87 and 91, who have had diabetes since early childhood. Both have avoided major complications even though they lived most of their lives in the "dark ages" (pre-glucometers). The 87-year-old brother often rides his bike 20 miles at a time. The book is full of stories like these.

Interspersed between the stories of these inspiring diabetic people are the 50 secrets. I'll list ten of them here:

1.Live first and be diabetic second.
2.Control your problems before they control you.
3.Consider being a grazer.
4.Always carry a toothbrush.
5.Erase your mistakes with exercise.
6.Love (and hate) your pump.
7.Involve your family and friends.
8.Have kids if you want to.
9.Understand possible diabetes complications.
10. Respect the power of diabetes.

The 50 secrets aren't earth-shaking but there is commentary from these diabetics on all of the secrets and it is motivating and encouraging. The advice is very, very practical.

The authors don't shy away from the grim statistics: "just by having diabetes, you already have twice the risk of dying young as someone who is diabetes-free." Some of the 50 people in the book share stories about scary hypoglycemic episodes while driving. The authors make it clear that facing the reality of possible complications is much better than denial.

There is some information about type 2 diabetes in the book too. Overall, the book is easy to read and I think every teen and twentysomething with diabetes should read it. Parents of diabetics should read it too. It will wake you up a little and also encourage you. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Idea
The pH Miracle for Diabetes
By Robert O. Young, PhD, and Shelley Redford Young
Warner Books
© 2004

All persons who are diabetic, whether Type 1 or Type 2, or pre-diabetics ("impaired fasting glucose", meaning, BG readings from 110 - 126) like me, want to lead normal lives, eat "normal" things, be lethargic, and go about their business without regard to their BG readings. To place ourselves in such an arena, we all want a magic pill which will make us fit in with the lifestyles of 5/6th of the U.S. population. Unfortunately, no one has found such a pill, even though more and more books are written about the virtues of more and more pills, and new and improved dietary supplements.

Before I review this book, I must first give you a mini-review of The Acid Alkaline Food Guide, by Dr. Susan E. Brown and Larry Trivieri, Jr., Squareone Publishers, © 2006. This book gives a much more concise and better description of what pH balance is, how it affects your health, and the possible consequences of not keeping ones system "in balance". pH means "potential for hydrogen", a term used in chemistry, which indicates whether a solution, fluid or compound is acidic, alkaline, or neutral. pH can be measured in our bodies by testing saliva and urine or blood (pH strips are available for the first 2 tests), and if we have a heavy concentration of hydrogen in our systems, we are "acid based". The scale goes from 0 to 14; to be healthy, we should have slightly alkaline, oxygen-rich arterial blood (7.365 to 7.45 is ideal) - a reading of 7.0 is neutral.

Oxygen rich systems (alkaline based) neutralize formation of acids which might prove to be harmful. To help us stay in the neutral zone, our bodies use calcium and protein from bones, and possibly other places, to pump more alkaline to our systems in order to neutralize formation of acids, so as to keep us in balance. After the passage of time, if we fail to keep our systems in balance, and we become acid based, our bone formation will be reduced, calcium will be lost in our urine (leading to kidney stone formation), proteins will breakdown causing our muscles to waste away, our systems will be unable to repair cells, tissues and organs fully, our systems will age at an accelerated pace, more free radicals will be produced, we will be subject to increased fluid retention, and so forth.

The American diet is centered around foods that create acid-base systems. Dr. Brown lists about 70 pages of foods we eat, and rates them according to whether the food is alkaline-forming or acid-forming. The first time I read through the list, I determined that I could not eat any food without running the risk of forming more acids in my system. To remedy this, Dr. Young would have me become a vegetarian, but Dr. Brown has an easier solution: eat more dark green vegetables than any other food group. She doesn't require me to give up meat or eggs or nuts, so long as 2/3rd of my plate contains foods that are alkaline-forming (such as kale, collard greens, asparagus, snap green beans, etc.).

Dr. Brown explains the basis for her conclusions. Our bodies have 3 methods of getting rid of unwanted "poisons", or acid forming chemicals, all of which are filtered through our bodies:

First, our lungs supply our bodies with much needed oxygen (as we breathe in), and dispel (exhale) carbon dioxide (the "burned" waste from our system - an inference might be made that aerobic exercise helps cleanse our system, because it requires lots of heavy breathing, which gives us a double dose of oxygen; in turn the CO2expels the oxidized stuff we don't need);

Second, our kidneys filter unwanted sugars, and other waste products which we don't need (we rid our systems through urine - a preventative measure we can take is to drink lots of pure, and hopefully ionized or ozone rich water, which will keep our kidneys healthy, as well as supply needed oxygen to our systems); and

Third, our skin filters out other things, through our perspiration (which is also produced through exercise).

With this background in mind, we can have a better understanding of what Dr. Young advocates in his book. He noticed the correlation between acid based systems and diabetes, and concluded that if our systems are neutral, or slightly alkaline, our blood sugars would be "normal". As I have been checking my pH balance every morning, which I do before checking my BG reading, I can generally predict what my BG readings will be. If my system measures 7.0, which is neutral, my BG readings are pretty good (98 to 107). If my pH balance is 6.5, my BG readings will be higher (113, 114).

Although Dr. Young's book does not explain the chemistry involved in the process, he nonetheless makes a very persuasive argument that by eating lots of green vegetables, and drinking pure water mixed with green powder (the "green drink"), diabetics can improve their BG readings. Throughout the book, there are very interesting testimonials, given by both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics; all of them reported a marked improvement in their BG readings - once they began drinking green drinks, stopped drinking carbonated beverages, and changing their eating habits.

The "green drink" is simply a mixture of oxygenated water (which can be produced with an ozone machine, or by adding sodium chlorite drops to pure water) and a teaspoon of green drink powder (which is nothing more than powdered, ground vegetables). I usually have two drinks a day, instead of an extra cup of coffee in the morning and a Diet Coke in the afternoon (which I have now given up).

Dr. Young also requires us to exercise. He prefers aerobic exercise to anaerobic exercise. I have no quarrel with his observations, especially since I have a better understanding of the benefits of having more oxygen pumped through my lungs. Oxidation is a good thing as far as I am concerned, because it neutralizes unwanted hydrogen ions and other viruses. As a side note, I have switched from the treadmill to an elliptical trainer, which gives me a better, complete body workout in less time.

Half of Dr. Young's book consists of recipes, which are all vegetarian in nature. We have not tried any of them, for a number of reasons. First, Dr. Young assumes that food budgets are unlimited, even for those of us who do not live in California. Thus, we cannot eat avocados three or four times a day. Second, the ingredients used in the recipes (even by California standards) are very expensive.

As I am writing this review, I can report that my pH readings do bear some correlation with my BG readings. When my pH is 6.5, my BG readings are a bit higher than when my pH is 7.0 or higher. Because of the changed variables (new exercise regimen, taking 2 green drinks a day, watching my intake of fatty foods, eating more green vegetables), I cannot isolate one component as causing the improvement in my BG readings.

It would be wonderful to learn that an adjustment to our diets could rid us of the need for insulin, metformin, Avandia, and other such drugs.None of the books I have reviewed suggest that we remain idle - all of the authors want us to exercise regularly (which may turn out to be the most important component of all - a recent report indicated that the best preventative for Alzheimer's Disease was to do 3 hours of aerobic exercise a week - oxygen is needed in your brain, you know).

Dr. Young's book is worth owning. Before you purchase this recommended book, I suggest that you consider reading other resources on ph balances.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Revolutionart Diet Plan For type 1 and 2 Diabetics
The book, greatest purchase that you can have. It has helped out in the balance of food that can be eaten, it's simple to follow and it even stastes good. I have always had a problem with what to cook for myself, that is the toughest part about a diabetic. With this book you are watching the sugar intake, the acid intake and more. I do wish there were more recipes to choose from that are just as good as these. I want to thank Dr. Young and his wife for doing all the research and providing everyone with facts. I have been a diabetic for 22 years and the change in my food without the acid is unreal to believe. This was a blessing for me. Thank you so much.

4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PLAN
I LOVE this plan. Its an excellent idea and I felt 1000% better after the first three days and then tried to eat something that was not on the plan and was flooded with a headache, and body pains like crazy.
I gave the book 4 stars because I would like a "Menu" plan . . . suggestions to eat this for breakfast, this for a snack and this for lunch etc.He gives really great information, just not how to combine foods so you don't feel hungry. The recipes in the back are excellent, but I wish they were better "catagorized", such as this is what you eat for balancing PH, this is what you eat when you are done balancing your PH etc.I would see a recipe that I would like to try and only read from their "reward" that it was a transitional recipe.
I have recommened this book to several of my diabetic friends.I have had EXCELLENT sugar levels using the diet and my asthma has improved dramatically!

5-0 out of 5 stars The pH Miracle Books

4-0 out of 5 stars A step in the right direction
Most of the suggestions form the book seem reasonable to me as a means to improve blood sugar. The main problem with the book is that is dated and in need of an update. For example the book says that Splenda would be very hard to find which is hardly the case anymore and does not mention newer products such a PGX for blood sugar control. Otherwise most of the suggestions are probably valid. I would have given 5 stars but for the out of date issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars DIP: Simple Guide to better health
I was surprised by the simple straight forward approach to the problems that must be addressed to live well with diabetes. This book contains clear sound approaches to nutrition, life style and overall health issues related to the diabetic condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great praise for this book
After hunting through many diabetic books for a gift for a friend of mine, I finally chose this one.My friend called me immediately and said it was the best gift she had ever received -she had read it backwards and forwards and had even highlighted it.She said it was extremely helpful (she is dealing with her diabetes naturally after experiencing prescription side effects) and is putting it's advice and recipes to use daily.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Inprovement Program
This book was a quick and easy but valuable read.
It addresses diabetes in understandable terms, explains the glycemic index, discusses nutrition (diet), excersise, and the useful addition of nutritional supplements in the diabetic diet.
It notes a group of what the author defines as 'Super Foods' which can have profound positive bearing on the diabetic status, and includes a small selection of recipes.
The book also contains a very useful section that address 25 different sweeteners; basic and comparative information I have sought after for some time - all nicely compiled in one place.

I feel the information provided in this book on nutritional supplements, sweeteners and 'Super Foods' make it a valuable resource for anyone with diabetes or anyone responsible for providing meals for diabetics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The single most important book for Diabetics to read
The first think that is important to point out that while Diabetes Burnout is published by the lobbying group the represents the interests of those who PROFIT from Diabetes, not those afflicted, THAT Dr. William H. Polonsky, DOESN'T REPRESENT THE ADA, at all and the book wasn't written for the ADA.

Dr. Polonsky however started a clinic in California to help psychological issues of the grind of maintaining glucose levels as well as trains and lectures doctors from all over the globe to STOP BLAMING THE DIABETIC for the challenges and changes in dealing with Diabetes.

Heck, after reading Diabetes Burnout, it was the first time I ever have had it acknowledged that my feelings that are natural about the challenge of ATTEMPTING to manage my Diabetes are natural and not some sign of weakness.

Understand that the book was published in 1999 (I think), where there are some changes in the understanding of Diabetes and choices.

I agree that the book is not perfect and that a few parts of it seem a little simplistic on working through the psychological issues dealing with the attempt to manage diabetes.

But I would give it 10 stars if I could. It is the first and best book of its kind and Dr Polonsky does GREAT work on this subject. I have spoken to him because, I am immediately be suspicious of anything that comes out of the ADA. Dr Polonsky has never worked for, been paid by or been sponsored by the ADA. The publishing arm of the ADA just saw that they might make some money as publishers of the book.

Just look at the 238 million received by the ADA last year and look at their funding sources. The ADA posts their "Golden Circle", those are entities that have given them over a million dollars in a year. Then look at those in the 500,000 group, etc. As you will see, the funds are from Large Pharm, Insurance companies and Cadbury Schweps (sugar loaded candy and soda). Understand that the money they receive and spend on "research", just goes back to those in their "Golden Circle".

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-saving psychological help with diabetes challenges
With diabetes, there is no walking away from the difficulties of the illnes; it can't be laid aside when the going gets tough. This great book helps look at and deal with the everyday difficulties that are real parts of living with diabetes. Dr. Polonsky is like a friend who understands and furthermore, has good suggestions for how to handle what you feel you can't live with any more. Great tone, helpful information, comforting message. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetes Burnout
EXCELLENT book for those living with diabetes.Diabetes burnout is very common. This book is full of tips, suggestions, and even tests, to help you in dealing with diabetes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Golden empathy at first but it only goes so deep
When I first saw the chapter for "Werewolf Syndrome" I knew I had to buy this book.It makes for an interesting read at first to learn about others' experiences.Though one thing the author fails to do is provide instruction on the process of motivation, and only provides a very shallow surface, if any, of scientific insight into why people get "burned out".I would suggest going to the book store and skimming this book to feel better about yourself but don't take it home with you.

One chapter he could've included would have been MY GENERAL PHYSICIAN HAS MISDIAGNOSED ME!I was burned out on my diabetes type II management.I couldn't get my sugars down!I would go to my GP and get the advice of take these pills and eat right. Then come back in three months we'll see if you're better. After two years I finally went to an endocronologist, *slap-slap*, and he is convinced I am type I LADA diabetes.Sure enough after a couple of insulin shots I am feeling normal!(Well, normal feels like a drug after having hyperglycemia for two years.)This is my chapter for the burnout book, sc$&@ the GP and go to an endocronologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book tells it like it is
When I picked up Diabetes Burnout, I was truly amazed.Dr. Polonsky understands that there are "barriers to self-care," real life problems and situations that get in the way of doing what's best for our bodies.

He knows that people make a cost/benefit analysis when it comes to self-care.If the behavior is too hard or too unpleasant, and the rewards don't seem worth it, we're not going to consistently exercise, check sugars, or eat what we're supposed to.

This problem is not just true for people with diabetes. It applies to anyone with chronic illness, or really, to anybody at all.I knew about this from living with multiple sclerosis, and I wrote about it in my book. But I didn't think anybody else had developed these ideas.I was sure Dr. Polonsky must have some kind of chronic condition himself, because he knows what it's like. But he doesn't have an illness. He's just very insightful.

I really like the humor in this book.I know some reviewers accuse him of being "cutesy" or Disneyfying diabetes, but I think being able to laugh at your situation helps, even when it's really painful. His description of "werewolf eating" and "Diabetes police" are highly evocative -- they get the point across.I don't think he's talking down to anyone -- he has compassion for people's struggles and wants us to feel better.

It's true that Diabetes Burnout does not cite its sources very well and doesn't contain a lot of specific info on diets or other self-care practices. But that's not its purpose. He is giving tools for identifying and overcoming our barriers -- social, practical, psychological or economic. This is important -- some of those barriers may have been with us for decades, and overcoming them can change not just diabetes management, but also entire lives.

He also inspires by telling stories of real people he has worked with, who have made great strides in difficult circumstances. It's entertaining, inspiring and educational (just like my book :-).What more do you want?

This book is an excellent read!Immediately after I finished the book, I bought 3 additional copies for gifts for loved ones. The book explains why diabetes is accelerating out of control in our society today and it gives great advice on how to take preventative measures to avoid becoming a victim.Jack's story on how he reversed his own pre-diabetic situation is compelling and he offers great nutritional advice, hope and encouragement to those who want to "Stop Prediabetes Now....The book is truthful, easy to read and medically sound.I enjoyed it cover to cover and will continue to enjoy it for years to come. Its on my favorite bookshelf for easy reference to the many healthy recipe suggestions. This book will be a positive life changing experience for every reader.

Jack Challem has once again demonstrated his expertise at presenting a wealth of health information in an easy-to-understand, easy-to-follow book. This book could be a life-saver to those readers who follow his program and avoid the harsh realities of diabetes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pre diabetes
I have read most of Jack Challem's books, and this latest on how to avoid diabetes is by far his best effort. It should really be treated as a manual, as the book provides lessons on getting and maintaining normal blood sugar and avoiding diabetes. However, the ease of reading and understanding the profound, yet simple to follow guidelines, reads more like a great book.My family has an extensive history of diabetics, and three of my siblings have it.My mother passed away in my arms, before she would have needed to leave this earth, due to diabetes..She had several surgeries on her feet, removing toes, and part of her feet, and she was blind at the end. I do not want to have to die this way...Thanks to the information in this awesome book, I have already lowered my fasting blood sugars from 94, to a normal range of 81 within a couple of weeks. I monitor my blood sugar follow simple eating and exercise habits outlined in easy to follow guidelines and have never felt better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Recipes
I love this cookbook !My son, age 12, was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The change in diet has been hard for him. With help from the recipes in "The New Family Cookbook for People with Diabetes", we have been able to find things that my son can have.He especially likes the Chicken Nuggets, Creamy Macaroni and Cheese, and Angel Food Cake with Cocoa Whipped Cream. There are many different types of recipes in this book.I'm sure there are some for everyones tastes.

4-0 out of 5 stars The New Family Cookbook for People with Diabetes
A wonder cookbook with lots of good, easy to prepare recipes that help me stick to the diabetic diet plan my registered dietitian prepared for me.My family also enjoys many of the recipes even though they are not diabetic.

The only complaint I have about the book is the index.I use the index frequently when I am looking for a specific recipe. This book does not put letters of the alphabet in the index as a location aid in finding a listing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Me and My Diabetes
I have type 2 Diabetes. My Doctor has told me that my Diabetes has gotten to the point that I will need insulin. He tells me that I need to get more exercise. I do my best. To my scale I am losing weight; but to his scale I am the same or I weigh even more. This Cookbook to me will help me eat what I should eat and the amont I should be eating.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE TRUTH ABOUT SUGAR
As a Registered Dietitian, for more than 20 years, and Certified Diabetes Educator, for over 10 years, I was so distressed by reviewer comments regarding sugar in the diabetic diet, that I am taking time torespond.

Since 1994 dietitians and educators working with people withdiabetes have been trying to get the truth out about sucrose (sugar). Sugaris not a forbidden food for people with diabetes.

Scientific evidencefrom more than a dozen studies has shown that the use of sugar does impairblood glucose control in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.Sugar andfoods containing sugar must be substituted for other carbohydrates, gramfor gram, and not simply added to the diabetes meal plan.In making suchsubstitutions, the nutrient content of concentrated sweets andsucrose-containing foods, as well as the presence of other nutrientsfrequently ingested with sucrose, such as fat, must be considered.

Thebottom line for people with diabetes is to check the total carbohydrate ina recipe or on a food label and work that into their diabetes meal plan. Because there are individual variations in blood glucose response,self-monitoring is an important part of diabetes control.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook Period
Great food for the whole family.Almost everthing I eat comes from this book.(I am not taking drugs- just diet and exercise.)It has helped me lower my blood sugar 40 points in three months and so far I have not runout of new things to try.Even friends who do not have diabetes havebought the book, just for the reduced fat/low sugar/low salt recipes.Itis a hit in my house. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Bible??The book is less then a inch thick!
Maybe its the beginners bible and not the holy bible size they were talking about. This book is for beginners only!!The main part of this book is recipes. If I wanted that I would have bought a recipe book not a book to teach me about diabetes nutrition. This is not a complete anything!!!Try Prevention The Sugar Solution.I am returning the "bible".What a waste of my money having to return this book. Not sure why it has so many stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bibld
This is a very informative book, with lots of tips.I've tried some of the recipes and they are good.I also purchased the book for a family member and they also found a lot of useful information in the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Deliver What It Promises
I would not recommend this book for people who are trying to get their life together after a diagnosis of diabetes. I bought this book because its subtitle is "A Complete Guide to Planning, Shopping, Cooking, and Eating". It is none of those things.
I was particularly interested in the SHOPPING promise because I find that to be the most difficult part of managing my diet. Other books didn't have anything helpful, and despite its promise, this book doesn't either. One has to read through every single recipe, write down the ingredients of what you want to make, and then go out and get it. Just like every other book. So tell me: how does this help with "shopping"? I expected lists of basic staples in a diabetic's diet. There should be lists of "must-haves" for your pantry. This book lies about what it contains, and is sadly lacking in what it needs.
An expensive mistake, don't buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars most helpful book so far
Now that the condition called "pre-diabetic" has been recognized by the medical profession, even more people need information on meals, recipes and menu planning to aid in blood glucose control.I have just recently been diagnosed as pre- or "borderline" diabetic.Pre-diabetes and diabetes are medical conditions that are vastly under the control of the patient. We have all heard that losing weight and increasing exercise are vital to controlling diabetes. At this point I have read about six books on diabetes and this one is by far the best. Some of the books were a complete waste of money, in my opinion;for example, "Tell Me What to Eat if I Have Diabetes" was for processed and fast food junkies. All of the books present information on goals for blood glucose levels, what are carbohydrates, etc.But for me, I needed help with menu planning, balancing proteins, carbos, fats, calories, increasing fiber, etc.

"The Diabetes Bible" does have workable recipes - the ones I have made were very tasty. The biggest shock comes when you actually measure the serving sizes specified.A 4-ounce apple did not exist in my grocery store - they were all 8 ounces. So, if you follow their menu plans (I used the 1,200 to 1,400 calorie plan), you can eat only half that apple. It is amazing how small a half-cup portion of cooked vegetables is or two ounces of lean protein is an incredibly tiny piece (I once virtuously ate a small fish fillet, only to find out that I had consumed "four exchanges").And one cup of milk is only a few swallows.

My biggest complaint about the book is that many menus rely on reduced fat cheeses, "lite" sour cream and margarine, although they do admit you can used the real thing, but (obviously) eat even less of it.

It is no lie to say that controlling pre-diabetes or diabetes is a heck of a lot of work.Given the risks of not controlling these conditions - eye damage, peripheral neuropathy, risk of heart attack and stroke - patient motivation to lose weight, increase exercise, control blood pressure and blood glucose, reduce cholesterol, etc. should be high, but it certainly is no day at the beach. The "Diabetes Bible" at least gave me some place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy, informative reading
The first exposure I had to the Loy family was when I read the book "Getting a Grip on Diabetes" written by this author's two sons who were both diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when they were six and seven. They mentioned in their book that their mother had also written a book, and I couldn't wait to read about living with diabetes from her perspective.I was not disappointed! Her writing style is so conversational and easy to understand. It was nice to read about how she and her family dealt with different aspects of parenting kids with diabetes. My 13-year-old son was just diagnosed three months ago, so this book helped me to get more comfortable with our new life with diabetes.I thoroughly recommend reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE BOOK
This was a great book.My only wish is that I would have found it 2 years ago when my son was diagnosed. This is a book that is written for "normal" families that have been attacked by this stupid disease known as Type 1 diabetes. I will recommend it to anyone I come into contact that has a newly diagnesed child.Thank you for writing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I have read quite a few books on Type I Diabetes since my now-10-year-old son was diagnosed 5 years ago. This book and the one by Ms. Loy's sons, Getting a Grip on Diabetes, are by far the best ones I have read. Helpful information in a readable form with suggestions that are easily incorporated in to anyone's life. This is the book I have shared with friends who have had children diagnosed with diabetes.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book gave me great hope & relief.
When my 4 1/2yr old was diagnosed in 2002, I was so scared that the fun part of his life was over. I bought 10 books & decided to read this one first. I was so happy & relieved to read about this great woman's calm approach to her boys diabetes. Both of her boys were diagnosed before 7 & continued on to do great things with their lives. This is a must read, it will relieve some of your worries & give you hope that life does go on & your child WILL be just fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic cookbook
This is a good basic cookbook whether or not one is diabetic. This is not gourmet but basic good food, most of which can be prepared relatively quickly. Not all of the dishes are from scratch which can be a plus if you are not into alot of cooking but a minus if you dislike most commercial prepared foods. Nice variety of dishes and all have nutritional information, saves lots of time for diabetics!

The meal plans in the back are based on a fairly sedendary life style, so if you are active forget about these plans (or increase the portion sizes).

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, and many of the 2,200 people in the United States diagnosed with diabetes each day are unaware they have it until major complications arise.Prevention and treatment of diabetes have become an urgent priority, as the global diabetes have a serious impact on the aging American population.Particularly alarming is type 2, or "late-onset" diabetes, a chronic illness that impairs the body's ability to use the insulin it produces to regulate blood sugar levels. In The Diabetes Cure, Vern Cherewatenko, M.D., has developed an innovative program to cure type 2 diabetes using HCA--hydroxycitric acid--to enhance the effectiveness of the body's own insulin.

HCA is an herbal compound found naturally in the brindle berry and is sold over the counter.Taken in conjunction with the mineral chromium, HCA can improve your body's response to insulin without resorting to some of the "harder" and more expensive glucose-control drugs on the market. Best of all, there are no side effects.Dr. Cherewatenko counts HCA and chromium consumption as one of the nine steps to curing diabetes--others presented and discussed comprehensively in the book include exercise, stress reduction, healthy eating habits, and frequent doctor visits.

Dr. Cherewatenko also provides important warning signs that can help prevent diabetes in those determined to be at highest risk. And if you alreadyhave the disease, he will show you how to halt it'sprogression and possibly reverse its debilitating effects. With the aid of the nine simple steps outlined in The Diabetes Cure, you can beat diabetes and get your health in order. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Cure:A Natural Plan...
Excellent. This book is easy to read and contains common sense medical advice that embraces an integrative approach to healing.Written by an M.D., even the most conservative patient can be confident that the recommendations in this book are based on long term trials and personal case studies of the author himself, and his patients. In other words, this was not written by some New Age guru or quack selling snake oils.Dr. Cherewatenko does not sell anything but does include a list of Consumer Reports' Top 8 glucometers in his book, as well as specific supplements by brand name that he recommends.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in improving their overall health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cut My Insulin Use By 33 Percent!! So far. . .
IF YOU GET ANY BOOK FOR DIABETES, GET THIS ONE!!!
I have had Type 2 Diabetes for over twenty-five years, I take
five Prescription Drugs, two types of Insulin to "Control" my
Diabetes. I have started the 9 Steps (five I have been doing
already) for a month and a half now. I have had measurable
results!! So far my Insulin use has dropped by 33 percent! Yes,
for the same amount of carb/time intake, what I use to have to
take 15 units for I now only use 10! I have always had a real
problem with my triglycerides, (this made by blood like pudding)
after starting the use of the hydroxycitric acid and chromium
from the book my triglycerides have dropped from a danagerous 798
to 333 so far. This again is a measurable number. All I can say
is SO FAR this book and information has been G R E A T ! ! !

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs more up-to-date nutritional information
I have not yet read the *whole* book in detail. However, I have browsed it, particularly the nutritional advice.

IMO, the information about using the combination of hydroxycitric acid and chromium is worth perhaps the price of a *used* copy of this book.Otherwise, most of his nutritional advice basically reads like warmed-over anti-fat, anti-cholesterol hysteria. This guy needs to read more about the low-carbohydrate way of life. That said, other readers may find more of value in this book than I did.

I would recommend, instead, (1) Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution, by Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, and (2) the newest Atkins book on diabetes. The Bernstein book is a very comprehensive resource on managing diabetes (type I and II).The Atkins book continues to have very good advice on the low-carbohydrate way of life.Bernstein, by the way, is a type I diabetic who not only has far outlived the original prediction for life expectancy for type I diabetics, but he is a pioneer in the use of blood glucometers (by patients) to keep blood sugars tightly controlled.

1-0 out of 5 stars INACCURATE
For those of you know are not aware of this, THERE IS NO CURE FOR DIABETES ONCE YOU HAVE IT (short of a pancreas transplant) I can't believe this author would make such a claim. As far as slowing or stopping it, save your money. Information about how to lower your risk is widely available FREE from many sources including the internet. For example, just follow a sensible meal plan like the American Diabetes Association advises and you can lower your risk of getting this disease. But as far as "curing" it? Nope. Not true. Talk about false advertising. What a snake oil salesman. Again, I repeat, THERE IS NO CURE. ... Read more
