5-0 out of 5 stars It really seems to work
I recently ordered this cookbook for my husband who has early-onset diabetes. His bloodsugar slowly started to rise. Then we got this book and my husband started to cook, going strictly by this book. (I like it that he is cooking now too, I always had to do it before and I was really getting tired of cooking after 46 years) He started a little over 2 weeks ago and his bloodsugar went from in the 140s down to 113 and 110, he measures it once a week. It never was that low before! I hope he will keep on using it. Now he even wants to bake a cake, he has never baked a cake in his life, never even wanted to eat much cake, that's the opposite of me. I eat that way now too even though I don't have it. I hope to loose some weight from it. It doesn't taste the greatest but it's not too bad. I can see that it could reverse diabetes, he just has to stay with it.
Two days later : Well the cake did not turn out very good, it was made with 1/3 c whole wheat flour and 1 tablespoon baking powder !! That can't be, has to be a mistake. He also used salt- substitute instead of salt, for the dough, this time it should have been the real salt. I think he doesn't want to bake anymore cakes. It was the apple cake in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars easy recepies
this book is easy to follow and I was able to get the sugar substitute at the local health food store.
color pictures of the completed food would be nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reversing Diabetes
I found out about this marvelous book by watching a video on youtube.com.
As with most books I buy I found it on Amazon.com and the price was of
course quite right. The book is very well documented with many studies
and practical sense recipes, etc.,.
I am very happy with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious and Practical
This is a great book if you are cooking for someone with diabetes (including yourself)and are interested in food that is delicious and "normal".I've tried MANY of these recipes; they are great! Not only will you eat well, but you'll learn a lot about how to cook in a way that supports good health, whether diabetic or not. Everyone in your family will love the food. This book is the practical companion to Reversing Diabetes, also by Julian Whitaker, M.D. -- an excellent educational book that gives you the WHY behind this approach to healthy food prep to support health (especially for diabetics).

4-0 out of 5 stars Reversing Diabetes Cookbook
This book is excellent. The recipes are balanced, nutritious and great tasting. I don't even miss the sugar that I would normally use in most of them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible for diabetics
This is a great read and is very informative. All diabetics should read. This was recommended by a diabetic dietician.

4-0 out of 5 stars First Book on Diabetes
This is also a must read book on diabetes. These doctors and researchers have been on the front line of this disease for many years and this is their results advice and knowledge of what they have learned and discovered. If you have diabetes or if runs in the family you must read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetes Guide
The book is very informative and full of facts. It's helped me quite a bit to understand how to control my diabetes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Physician recommended
We purchased this book on the recommendation of my husband's physician, and have found it thorough, informative and helpful in understanding the disease and what he can do to keep it under control.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice overview, well organized
I have had diabetes for quite a few years, but recently was promoted to insulin status.I have been searching for a single source of information that was both simple and yet included more technical details of what was going on.

The book does a very credible job of both for many aspects of diabetes. As an example, it provides a description how insulin works at the body and cell level, the effects of exercise, diet, timing, lifestyle, and many of the other factors that affect blood glucose levels. The descriptions start at a high level (e.g. exercise uses glucose in the blood, so levels tend to drop) to a more theoretical discussion of insulin interacting at the cellular level within your body and how your liver and other organs react.

The same type of treatment is also provided for other subjects, ranging form what to do when you are sick; sex and libido issues; diet; types of insulin; managing diabetes around sports, exercise, work, travel, stress, family, entertaining; interaction of factors; complications of high and low sugars; and a bunch more.

In short, there are no doubt books which cover individual aspects of any part of diabetes with more detail and rigor, but if you want one book that does a very credible job on most of the topics, this is a good choice.

PROS:
Very readable.

Well organized- individual topics are fairly well indexed and broken down by topic, and for each topic, the discussion breaks down how this might affect different portions of the population (e.g. Type1, Type2, Gestational).

Seems to be written by people who both have actual experience as diabetics and real medical knowledge. Does not have the latest fads.

Reasonably up-to-date

A lot of info for less than $10

CONS:
My guess is that different sections are edited by different people, so the same information can be repeated multiple times.Still, it does serve to make each section self-contained.

Some of the stuff is a little obvious- such as the tip to shop around for best prices on insulin.Still, my guess is that no matter how obvious, someone probably never thought of it.

Sections on health care coverage are so general as to be useless

I would have liked to see more references included for nerds like myself who would like to read more technical reference on the subject.Sure, you can go hunt for them, but the authors no doubt had them at their fingertips.

SUMMARY:
An outstanding value, lots of good info. I had confidence that the material was good information, not someone's opinion

3-0 out of 5 stars All Natural and Tastey
All Natural and Tastey.I simply make a list of the ingrediences that I need for the recepie that I will be preparing, head to my local farmer's market, and then return home and cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a fan
I'm a fan of this cookbook author. I have her newest book, but decided to try this one too since I love her other book so much. It is definitely healthy, but it's as tasty or tastier than I expected it to be since the recipes are so good for you. All the recipes that I have tried are pretty easy and fast, but the end result makes the dishes look impressive. I have diabetes in my family so this helps me get a headstart on preventing it, hopefully. Another winner of a cookbook!

2-0 out of 5 stars Carb-heavy recipes not appropriate for modern diabetes care
Despite the positive reviews already posted, I cannot whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone with diabetes. While it does follow the current guidelines of the ADA, I would challenge any diabetics to see how their blood glucose responds to a Mango Lassi (p.272, 27g carbs) or to a serving of Roasted Garlic Mashed Baby Creamer Potatoes (p. 254, 20g carbs). At least Ms. Newgent includes a "Fresh Fact" on the page to say that "Potatoes can raise your blood glucose level quickly, so keep an eye on your serving size." Good luck with that...

There are some worthwhile recipes in the book (e.g. Party Peanut Chicken Satay, p. 88, 5g carbs), and at least she lists the carb content so that the carb-aware diabetic can make his/her own decisions about what to eat. Fortunately, there are a great number of cookbooks for the carb-conscious diabetic; I would start with Richard Bernstein's "The Diabetes Diet: Dr. Bernstein's Low-Carbohydrate Solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy meals and good for you
This is a great book for those dealing with diabetes. The recipes are simple and easy. There are many naturally gluten-free recipes and many that don't call for soy. (I am allergic to soy, dairy & gluten and my mother has diabetes). Tonight I made the Pepper Quinoa Salad with Basil. It was very good and quick to prepare. In the dessert section there are simple recipes such as Balsamic Strawberries and Grilled Figs. All in all, this is a great book. Thanks to Jackie Newgent for putting together this fantastic resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tasty food, easy recipes -- what's not to like?
I am originally from Louisiana, and French, Cajun, and Italian dishes (the more complicated and richer, the better) are second nature to me, but at 56 I was unexpectedly diagnosed with Type II diabetes. By inclination, I am one of those persons who doesn't care how "good" something is for me -- if it doesn't taste good, I'm not going to eat it! And I despise the "taste" of artificial sweeteners, and don't believe they do my body any good either.

Well, after having this book a week, I've discovered that the author seems to have an excellent set of priorities:(1) Food should look and taste good; (2) it shouldn't take forever to prepare; (3) it should follow sound thinking for helping you get your diabetes under control.

Although I consider myself an innovative cook, I would never have thought of marinating fresh sliced strawberries in balsamic vinegar. Delicious! Or how about a breakfast patty made from chopped granny smith apples and chicken breasts?

In short, if you have diabetes or cook for someone suffering from it, I highly recommend this book. If you are short of time, and just want to eat healthier, this simple book is very enjoyable and creative! ... Read more

If you or a family member has diabetes, food preparation may seem like a chore or a deprivation. What can you cook that tastes good and fits the diabetes guidelines? The authors of Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies, diabetes expert Alan Rubin (who also wrote Diabetes for Dummies) and registered dietician Fran Stach, have come up with dishes that will please not just the person with diabetes but the whole family. The diabetes diet is healthy for all of us, and if we can make it taste good, we all benefit.

That's where this book shines. The 112 recipes are as creative and tasty as they are healthy, yet most take a half hour or less of preparation (plus cooking time). Recipes include Soy Waffles, Crispy Corn French Toast, Portobello Paté, Carrot Soup with Leek and Blood Orange, Mango Tortilla Salad, Oriental Beef and Noodle Salad, and Spaghetti Squash with Fresh Basil, plus a variety of fish, meat, and poultry entrées. Some of the recipes were created by chef Denise Sharf; others were contributed by gourmet restaurants. All recipes include nutritional information: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, fiber, sodium, and exchanges.

Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies is more than a compilation of recipes. The book also gives guidelines for "what, when, and how much" to eat, including tips for visualizing portions (an ounce of meat is the size of a matchbox; an ounce of cheese is the size of a domino; a medium potato is the size of a computer mouse). You'll get shopping and cooking tips and illustrated food-preparation steps to help novice cooks.

Like the whole For Dummies line, the style is simple, friendly, clever, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, such as, "Don't go to a paint store and expect to get thinner there." -- Joan Price ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Diabetes for Dummies
I never write reviews, but, since I decided to return it, but found shipping would have been almost as much as the book itself, I'm stuck with an item that is usless to me. I was very displeased with this book. It called for eating sugar and starches not healthy for diabetics. Makes no common sense!

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
I like how it explain diabetes and what i can do to you.the foods you can and shouldnt eat. it's full of great recipes and great imformation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought it would be.
The book is okay. Not very detailed or in-depth. A lot of generalities. Would I buy it again or recommend it to others? No. It just doesn't live up to the "Dummies" series.

5-0 out of 5 stars pregnancy and diabetes
donated to 3rd party for use as a guidebook in counseling pregnant teens, ok price, good srevice

3-0 out of 5 stars Looking for menu direction
Bought this book because of Chapter 5: "Food, Food, Food" - in hopes that it would help me with sample menus. The chapter provides ONE sample menu... and not a very helpful one. The lunch time meal is tuna, which (as any pregnant woman knows) is a taboo food. Some of the guidelines were beneficial (like eat every 3 hours), but nothing new (all information previously provided by my doctor).

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very informational
I was hoping this book would help me understand gest diabetes, but the info was slim - i skimmed thru it in one setting and it ended up in the donation bag.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but not the definitive work on the subject....
The book pushed the usual medical establishment line about gestational diabetes which might work for some, but really is by no means a definitive work on the subject. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, you should read everything on the subject including this book but be skeptical. The medical establishment is pushing insulin on pregnant women when diet should be the first approach and be careful...low carb foods are NOT always better than regular. This is caused by hormones and the normal rules of diabetes do not always apply. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful!
I have purchased several copies of this book--for myself and others. It's informative, approachable and comforting. If you have a child who has been recently diagnosed or you know someone who does, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview
As parents of a newly diagnosed child with Type I diabetes, we were looking for a recently written, comprehensive overview of what we and our child were facing, and this book does an excellent job of providing exactly that. Covering topics ranging from how to deal with stereotypes and "helpful" comments from others about how to treat diabetes to glucose monitors, insulin choices, and technology, to dealing with issues like school, camp, and playdates, it is a very useful guide. We have a few quibbles--although overall reassuring, for example, it talks about checking a child's blood sugar every night after the child goes to sleep when the parent goes to bed and an additional several times a week in the middle of the night, which is far more often than our diabetes team suggests is needed. Even so, for parents (and grandparents--we bought extra copies for them) looking for an introduction to the world of Type I diabetes care, this is an excellent choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars So impressed with this book!
As a parent of a newly diagnosed child, I just bought this book and I am half way through reading it.It is so informative, so easy to read and seems to contain information on every aspect of dealing with type 1 diabetes. It gives references to other books and places. My husband, who hates to read, also is reading and indicated that it is a quick read with valuable information. The author comes through as so genuine and you truly feel like you are getting help from a friend.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a realistic and positive book!
I was so thankful to find this book specifically for diabetes and pregnancy. It focuses on Type 1 which is something I haven't found in other books. And while the stories are realistic and not always positive stories, the overall vibe of the book is very positive and actually made me feel like I can have a healthy pregnancy with Type 1. I highly recommend this read if you're a diabetic considering conceiving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed full of info and hope
I am so grateful for this book. For the past twelve years I have lived with Type 1 and basically been told that pregnancy was an unattainable goal. I fought many fears that "Steel Magnolias" would be my fait should I try to start a family, because I had no other reference points. The personal narratives in this book made me see that it IS possible to have a health pregnancy and a health baby. This book gave me back something I have long been missing...HOPE. I encourage every OB-GYN, Endo and PCP to buy a copy, read it, and recommend it to their patients. It's about time we all received this education.

5-0 out of 5 stars Down to Earth, Hopeful, and Smart; A Great Resource!
This book is a great, helpful resource for people looking to understand what it will be like to plan for and have a healthy pregnancy while also managing T1 diabetes. Cheryl presents information from varying points of view in a straightforward, down to earth way. It's not like you can't find the medical information in the book elsewhere; you probably can - but you'll probably find it in the form of one or two useful paragraphs here or there, and then have to cobble together the big picture on your own. If you're lucky, you have a good doctor or diabetes nurse and some of the information in the book will be given to you by them, but unfortunately this isn't the case for everyone, and you may find yourself wanting to get the whole picture before you're ready to sit down for a long pre-pregnancy consult with your health care team. And even when you do, you will want this book to refer to after, and to learn what other actual people experienced, and to give a copy to your husband/partner/mother whoever else you wish would understand more fully the effort involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars long overdue!
Great book with great resources! As a type 1 diabetic mother of 3 boys, I wish this book had been published ten years ago. Well organized, with relevant information, I will pass this on to all my diabetic mama friends :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book for pregnant diabetic women or those considering pregnancy
I'm a type 1 diabetic who gave birth to twin babies a year ago.I just read this book and can't tell you how badly I wish I would have had this book with me through my pregnancy.I can't think of a pertinent subject that isn't covered. The book is purposefully written so you are not intimidated-instead it is a book that welcomes the worried or nervous diabetic women and in a conversational tone gives her tons of information and a lot of hope. Many different women share their experiences in this book and prove alongside the author that staying healthy during pregnancy and having a healthy child is certainly possible with pre-existing diabetes.

I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars diabetic snacks
Tried a chicken nugget receipe and my picky children loved it.So we need to try other receipes for a child recently diagnoised with Diabetes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kids' cookbook marginally appealing
Most of the receipes in this book I really don't think my kids will enjoy. They are not big vegetable fans and this has a lot of veggie-oriented dishes.I was hoping for more creative ideas, more low-carb snacks on the sweet side. Also, it's not a visually appealing cookbook.I decided to keep it, though, as it does have some receipes I can use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Snacks for Everyone, Not Just Diabetics
Great snack, breakfast, lunch, and dessert recipes all kids are sure to love!An easy and fun way to try new foods, too.Every recipe is made from a short list of ingredients and are quick to make for anyone short on time.I can't wait to eat everything in this book!My kids will be so happy eating, they won't notice they're eating healthy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I am using this cookbook to give to families that have children with diabetes.I chose this cookbook because the recipes are not long and involved and do not use specialty ingredients. The recipes are short, nutritious and each is followed by nutritional data.It makes it very easy for the children to count their carbs! 2-0 out of 5 stars A First Book for Understanding Diabetes - COMPANION to the 11th edition of "understanding diabetes"
This book is a very condensed version of the actual "Understanding Diabetes" 11th Edition. It is little more than a detailed outline. The section on counting carbohydrates is useless. Unless you are well-versed in diabetes (i.e. diabetic educator or endocrinologist), you are wasting your money getting this book. As stated in the title, it is only a "COMPANION to the 11th Edition of 'Understanding Diabetes.' " I would not waste my money on this book, unless I was using the pages as slides for a presentation on the actual book and already had the 11th Edition book memorized.

Loving this book, my husband is diabetic and I'm finally cooking healthy meals for him and myself! We are learning how easy it really is to make balanced meals. The recipes are easy & quick to make. Since we are adding a variety of fruits and vegetables, we can also puree portions for our baby too. We've been following just a couple of weeks and I have already have lost 4lbs. Can't wait to continue! It is easy to make quick substitutions if needed in the meals. Also, since it is just the 2 of us, we have leftovers another day if we don't feel like cooking, or we need to take lunch to work. I've been traditionally one of those that often goes for take-out since it is so easy, but putting together meals from here has been so easy and convenient. We've also had much more energy since following the book. Looking forward to trying the other recipes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fake Food is not Healthy Food!
I don't normally do this but felt compelled to do so because I was so disappointed with this book.
This book my as well be called the Splenda cookbook, or imitation egg cookbook, or margarine cookbook. Perhaps if`eating healthy' were taken out of the title of the book I would've have so peeved. I wish I had kept the receipt so I could get my money back. There are no pictures and it reads like a high school textbook with as much flare and personality.
I did read a review online that touched on these issues but was desperate for a guidebook to help me plan my meals, as I am a fairly new type 1 diabetic. I would recommend the South Beach Diet book instead. Fake Food is not Healthy Food!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book
I must say this is not the easiest book to read but it is very interesting. The part I enjoyed most was the area that listed all the natural supplements that you could use to control your blood sugar. I ordered 2 copies; one for my mother, who has diabetes and one for myself for prevention.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow what a book on Diabetes a must read!
Once I picked it up I was not able to put in down, from the real story of diabetes to the approach, prevention and treatment its all there. His ability to explain the power of natural supplements such as benfotiamine (page 165) which I never heard of is unreal. I found more information about benfotiamine on benfotiamineinfo.org started using it at 300mg a week and now at 600mg and wow the neuorpathy in my feet are 10 times better!

Thank you Steven V. Joyal for writting such a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars diabetes
This book gave me some important info that I needed, but not as much as I wanted.Good read tho.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally detailed book.
The prevention and treatment of this disease is within our grasp and Dr. Joyal has given us the tools to understand and conquer it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Insightful and Informative
Dr Joyal hits the nail on the head in this well-detailed, unique, and insightful synopsis of the prevention and maintenance of diabetes. As someone who has many close friends with diabetes, I decided to give this book a try for nothing more than educating myself on this widespread disease. Dr Joyal has opened my eyes not only on how people with diabetes can prevent health complications but also on how to take care of myself with the correct balance of diet, exercise, and supplements in order to minimize my risk of contracting diabetes as well as other preventable diseases.

The great thing about this book is that it is not solely for people with diabetes. Anyone looking to become healthier and are just sick of hearing about these fad diets that come and go can definately benefit from reading this. We all know that by eating appropriate portions of healthy food, incorporating a structured and focused fitness regime, taking supplements, and reducing stress are all important factors in becoming healthier.Dr Joyal takes it a step further and tells you WHY these factors are important and how, when all done together and structured, are vital in disease prevention and maintenance.

As soon as I finished this book I gave it to a friend of mine with a serious case of diabetes. Since reading Dr Joyal's book and implementing his suggested methods, I have noticed a dramatic change in his attitude, energy, and overall well-being.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking for better ways to control diabetes or simply for the person looking to get in better shape and has questions about vital nutrients and food preparation. ... Read more

Product Description
Nearly 90 years after the discovery of insulin, with an estimated $116 billion spent annually on the medical treatment of diabetes in the United States, why is diabetes the one major cause of death that’s been relentlessly rising for a century? Diabetes Rising investigates why the nearly two dozen medications approved for type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes, and all the high-tech treatments for type 1 (juvenile-onset) diabetes, are failing to slow this modern pandemic of Western civilization. The book also profiles promising new approaches that are making significant strides toward preventing, curing, or dramatically improving treatment of the disease. Written by Dan Hurley, a regular contributor to the science section of the New York Times (and himself a type 1 diabetic for over 30 years), Diabetes Rising breaks medical news by revealing:

  • The wealthiest town in Massachusetts, where an outbreak of type 1 diabetes among the children has parents up in arms, and a state investigation underway.
  • The county in West Virginia with the highest rate of type 2 diabetes in the country (where Hurley spent an evening with a family of 10 siblings, all of whom have the disease, and the local Wal-Mart proudly announces that it sells more Little Debbie snack cakes than any other Wal-Mart in the world).
  • Why the rate of type 1 diabetes has been rising just as fast and just as long as the rate of type 2, transforming a childhood disease that was once exceedingly rare into one that now affects most elementary school systems in the country.
  • How the “artificial pancreas,” long considered a holy grail that would take decades to develop, has now reached the final stages of testing—the book describes Hurley’s extraordinary experience participating in one of the world’s first clinical trials of the device, and profiles the colorful mavericks pushing the technology forward.
  • Why international diabetes experts believe that three simple, little-known approaches—avoiding cow’s milk in baby formulas, getting adequate amounts of vitamin D, and simply playing in the dirt—could prevent many cases of diabetes.
  • Innovative public-health strategies in New York City, Los Angeles and elsewhere that are seeking to attack diabetes today just as campaigns of a century ago defeated communicable diseases—with public-health laws regulating fast-food restaurants.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, easy to understand, and hopeful
My wife was diagnosed with type one diabetes shortly after we were married, when she was 30 years old. It's been five years now and I feel like I still don't have as good a grasp on the disease as I should if I'm going to be a big help to her. So after hearing an interview with the author on the radio, I decided to read this book in order to learn more about the disease and what the prospects are for real life changing treatments and cures for my wife. I also wanted to lean more about the origin of the disease and how best to prevent its manifestation in high risk individuals, seeing as how we have recently had a son who so far has not shown any signs of having it.

I thought the book was fantastic and I promptly made my wife read it (in order to give her some guidance and hope) as well as my parents and in-laws so that all involved in her support system would have a better idea of what we were up against. The book laid out in an easy to understand fashion, the biology and history of the disease, as well as the possible controversial causes, cutting edge treatments and outlook for future cures. All told, the book was very hopeful that a cure or "cure like treatment" could be possible within the next 20 years. That may be in time to save my wife's life and the lives of millions of others. The book also laid out a plan of action to avoid contracting the disease for those who may be genetically susceptible to it. That is extremely valuable to me as I try to protect my son who may be at risk due to my wife's genetics.

I highly recommend this book not only to those who already have diabetes or have a loved one who does, but to everyone else because this disease is spreading at an alarming and unprecedented pace and can strike the perfectly healthy at any time. People should be aware that it's out there and know what to do to avoid it because once you have it, your life will be changed for ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Diabetes Rising is comprehensively informative and extremely reader friendly. Debunking dozens of myths about the disease, DR elucidates the myriad of potential causes and treatment options while painting a clear picture of the human costs being paid for our lack of understanding and action to date. In extensive reading about nutrition, health diabetes and obesity I have never found any other book so complete, professional and informational. Highly recommended to all readers!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent run-down on diabetes
After initially learning they have diabetes, many people turn to "how-to" books recommending ways to lower blood glucose levels, eat right and lose weight. This is a great companion book, which describes the history, treatment and research involved with diabetes I and II.Much of what Dan Hurley writes about is eye-opening. I recommend everyone read Diabetes Rising, not just full-blown diabetics. It is sure to motivate and enlighten anyone interested in not becoming part of this fast-growing pandemic.

3-0 out of 5 stars How Can You Write A Diabetes Solutions Book And Make No Mention Of Low-Carb Diets?
The alarming rate of diabetes growth over the past two decades alone has quite literally become an international health epidemic in 21st Century society. As the numbers have continued to rise and rise while blood sugar disorders have become much more common than ever before, the health experts have attempted to put on their thinking caps to come up with a solution that will help people suffering with diabetes have the ability to beat this problem once and for all. So far, there have been no cures found. What we need are people who can come up with solutions to this monstrosity of a disease and Dan Hurley has attempted to do just that with the release of his book Diabetes Rising: How a Rare Disease Became a Modern Pandemic, and What to Do About It.

Hurley himself has Type 1 diabetes and as an investigative medical journalist has a personal vested interest in this topic. After living with this disease and seeing so many people suffering from both the juvenile diabetes (Type 1) and adult onset diabetes (Type 2), you would like Hurley would examine ALL of the science and latest information on how to best control the symptoms of diabetes. But one thing glaringly missing element in the Diabetes Rising book is the lack of any mention of the low-carbohydrate nutritional connection to diabetes and how it would play some role in the solution. With all we know about carbohydrate-restriction as an essential part of an effective way to control blood glucose levels, this is quite perplexing to say the least.

But there are exactly TWO references to low-carb (one simply mentioning the Atkins diet and another talking about what the low-carb diet is). But that's it! I'm greatly concerned that this seemingly innocuous oversight will lead people to believe carbohydrate awareness and control plays virtually zero role in treating diabetes. I've had the privilege of interviewing Dan Hurley on my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show" podcast and he admitted to me that low-carb living is an ideal way to manage diabetes. So then it begged the question: WHY NO MENTION OF IT AS PART OF THE SOLUTION?

Even more disconcerting was the lack of any references to those medical practitioners who are doing amazing work using low-carb diets on real diabetic patients. People like Dr. Richard K. Bernstein who wrote Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution and Dr. Mary C. Vernon who co-authored Atkins Diabetes Revolution are at the forefront of effectively normalizing blood sugar levels in diabetics of all types simply by cutting their carbs and shifting them from being carbohydrate burners to fat burners. A high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb diet is the cornerstone for making this happen for diabetics and yet Dan Hurley missed this point in his book? In fact, he'd never even heard of them before I brought up their names. How can you write a book about solutions to the diabetes problem and miss the two biggest names using low-carb diets?

I credit Hurley for realizing the change in dietary recommendations in the 1970s to a high-carb, low-fat diet negatively impacted diabetes rates and that's exactly right. And while Type 2 diabetes tends to get all the press for being on the rise, he also makes the case for why even Type 1 diabetes is skyrocketing as well in Diabetes Rising. It's certainly a well-organized and sorely needed book on the subject of diabetes that lawmakers and health professionals alike should take heed and notice. And yet it's impossible for me to take a work like this seriously because of the low-carb omission. Despite heaping great praise on carbohydrate-restriction as a solution during my interview describing it as "the best diabetes diet," Hurley said he didn't include it in his book because of his belief that people won't follow a low-carb diet because we're surrounded by cheap carbs. What a crock of you know what!

I'm not a diabetic, but I've been eating a healthy low-carb nutritional plan for nearly seven years and it has helped me stave off diabetes and control my morbid obesity. Had I not begun a low-carb lifestyle change on January 1, 2004 when I went on the Atkins diet, then there's no doubt in my mind that I'd be a Type 2 diabetic today. But carbohydrate control has kept my blood sugars at normal levels and I challenge anyone to tell me I'm not a healthier man today as a result. It's disheartening to think a book about diabetes can be written in 2010 with all that we know from the science about this disease and the low-carb connection and have nary a mention of this way of eating. Completely and utterly incomprehensible!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important, wide-ranging books about the epidemic of diabetes
No library - health or general - should be without DIABETES RISING: HOW A RARE DISEASE BECAME A MODERN PANDEMIC, AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT: it's one of the most important, wide-ranging books about the epidemic of diabetes to be published in recent years. It comes from the author's interviews with hundreds of physicians, researchers and patients around the world and presents interlocking scientific theories to explain the rise of diabetes and how to prevent or even cure both types. An astounding, direct assessment that's long been needed, this is a top pick and stands well apart - and above - the wealth of diabetes history and management tools on the market. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetes Burnout
Marvellous book - gave me further insights that have been extremely useful. Recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book out there to address the psychosocial impact of diabetes
Diabetes is not only a condition you treat with insulin, oral meds, diet and/or exercise. Diabetes, as a chronic condition, takes an important toll over our emotions: it's simply hard to deal with something that won't go away ever no matter what... you can control it but you can't remove it (not yet, at least).

Dr. Polonsky has been studying this for many years and is one of the world's most respected authorities in the psychosocial and behavioral issues in diabetes, currently heading the nonprofit Behavioral Diabetes Institute. He has poured a lot of his knowledge into this title to help all of us with diabetes (and those around us) better cope with those times when we feel diabetes is just too much to cope with.

He has you explore the barriers that most affect you and, through a worksheet very cleverly titled "What's Driving you Crazy About Diabetes?" he helps you guide how you read the rest of the book, by focusing on the matters that you clearly need more help with. Each chapter from that point on contains a load of strategies to overcome the specific barrier dealt within it.

If diabetes burnout is kicking you hard or if you can merely feel it coming, don't wait and help yourself by reading this great title.

3-0 out of 5 stars took a little long

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I've found
After six years of managing the health aspects of diabetes well, I never could deal with the emotional aspects. Every day was like a spelling test I flunked even though I knew the words. This book taught me about accepting 'less than perfect' blood glucose numbers. Now maybe I can relax and stop beating myself up with guilt and worry, something that also makes things worse. This book has wonderful questionaires and evaluations that really help narrow down the reader's needs then offers concrete steps to help overcome whatever aspect is a problem in diabetes care. I will recommend this book to my friends who ask about diatetes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Now somewhat outdated
This isn't a bad book if you are new to using insulin, but just FYI: this book still talks about Lente/Ultralente, which is no longer available, at least in the US. There is some info on Lantus, which has taken over as a basal for many insulin users, but not enough. It has a lot of info on NPH, which many users have stopped using now that Lantus/Determir are available. So the insulin info is dated.

Also a caution: the writer uses a pump. Expect to read pump-biased therapy. If you want a good book that is more up-to-date on insulins and methodology, as well as dietary guidelines, get Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution (the 2007 edition). With the Bernstein book, you'll learn how to inject insulin in minute doses to approximate the results from a pump without the pump hassles or the pump cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, very easy to read
I tried to find something to read to manage diabetes with insulin but was almost impossible. There are lot of places on the net very fatalist only talking about all the complications and the terrible dead that will occur if you don't control well the sugar levels. However this book talk about the complications but only a few pages.

The author writes in a very easy way to understand how to manage type 1 diabetes with insulin, something very difficult but with the explanations on the book is easier to control the sugar, was very helpful to me because i live in Mexico and here is almost impossible to find good information even doctors are not very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, user friendly, and easily understood.
As a newly diagnosed diabetic I needed to learn as much about diabetes as I could. This book did the trick and was fun to read. The helpful hints in the shaded areas on many of the pages pushed home the important concepts to be remembered.

There weren't a lot of complex ideas that needed head scratching and rereading to understand.Things were explained in a simple manner that made sense and were easy to conceptualize.

I would definately suggest this book to anyone needing to take care of themselves or someone they love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still learning
I have been type 1 for over 20 years and have always tried to stay as well informed as possible. That being said, I still learned things from reading this book. Most of it was an overview of things I already understand, but I did discover some quality tips to tighten my control. I really hope that there will be another version some day that includes more information on continuous glucose monitoring systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful.
Definitely a must-read for type 1 diabetics.I bought this a few months after diagnosis, and it helped me really understand the effect the insulin I am taking has on my body and how to control my blood sugar even better. ... Read more

Product Description
The twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes are a 21st-century time bomb. The Atkins organisation is renowned for their work on diabetes and this book sets out a controlled carb diet and nutrition regime to help people lose weight and prevent, treat and even reverse diabetes. The conventional 'healthy' Western diet, based upon large amounts of carbohydrates and a small amount of protein and fat, results for many people in a state of hyperinsulinism, a key factor in developing diabetes. Insulin is a hormone that helps to regulate blood sugar levels in the body. The Atkins nutritional plan, based on eating the foods that balance your hormones to regulate blood sugar levels, controls the production of insulin and is therefore a great tool in treating and preventing diabetes. The Atkins plan also promotes healthy weight loss and freedom from other conditions, such as high blood pressure and heart disease. The book contains all the nutritional information diabetes sufferers need to plan their new, healthy diet, as well as recipes so the plan can be put into practice.Amazon.com Review
Two colleagues of the late Dr. Robert Atkins take on the obesity epidemic's deadly twin: type 2 diabetes. Dr. Mary Vernon and Jacqueline Eberstein, RN, adapt the carb-cutting, fat-allowing Atkins nutritional approach as a preemptive strike against this fast-growing killer. Diabetes--defined here as a condition in which glucose or blood sugar is above the normal range--is viewed as a preventable problem. "What we hope we have created in this book is a realistic and practical guide to wiping out type 2, one person at a time." Since obesity is the major risk factor for diabetes, they begin with the "fat lie" (i.e., the belief that fat causes obesity) to voice the Atkins mantra: low fat means high carbs and high carbs are broken down into sugar. With a convincing mix of essay/picture testimonials, clinical studies, quizzes, checklists, and menu planners and recipes, Vernon and Eberstein make the case for diet and lifestyle changes to alter the metabolism of those at risk for diabetes. They have done a yeoman's job of translating Atkins'smedical nutrition advice into a step-by-stepprogram. One can quibble about their missionary zeal or the omnipresent eggs in the breakfast sample menus. At times, the scientific data are overly detailed or hidden within a quiz. Thankfully, there is a spot-on summary of the book's paradigm-busting ideas in the appendix.-- Barbara Mackoff ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetics BEWARE of Adkins
My book came quickly. It was in excellent used condition. I would buy from this seller again.

HOWEVER the Adkins Diabetics diet itself is still dangerous for people like me who are already Diabetic.
After 12 days on the plan I was in the Hospital's ER... The doctors there said diabetics should NEVER
let themselves go into Ketosis, it is dangerous. Since Adkins is all about Ketosis all I can say is
BEWARE! Don't get me wrong I have always thought the Adkins diet is the best, just NOT for diabetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Atkins for Diabetics great program!
I have now been on the Atkins For Diabetics plan for almost a month. While my body has responded nicely, my husband's, who has been diabetic for much longer and whose liver seems overactive, has not. My sugar is dropping, his is not. So be sure you communicate with your doctor about changes you are making (just as the Atkins Program suggests) because you may need more carbs and not know it. But when I need to take my jeans off, now I don't even have to unsnap or unzip them, I've lost that much in three weeks!(I neither measured nor weighed, but I can tell I'm smaller.) Give it a try!

Also, as far as Amazon's role in my purchase, the estimate of how quickly I would receive my book was two weeks longer than it actually took, so if you are very close to the point of origin, you too might get yours in less time than you thought! My book was in pristine condition when it arrived. I have since made it mine, but it started out great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Atkins diabetes revolution
This was a very good and detailed book on what and how to do things
with having diabetes it does wonders

5-0 out of 5 stars Atkins Diabetic Revolution
We are so pleased with the information and layout of this material. It has been extremely beneficial since the day we recieved it.An absolute MUST HAVE for any diabetic who would like to live life healthy and medication free!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Improvement Over Traditional Low-Fat, High-Carb Diabetic Diet
I must give credit to Dr. Robert C. Atkins for popularizing an approach - carbohydrate restriction - that helps people with diabetes control their disease, and likely helps prevent type 2 diabetes in others.Vernon and Eberstein do a great job explaining his program.

I can best summarize this book by noting that it is the standard Atkins diet with a few modifications: 1) special supplements2) you add additional carbs to your diet more slowly3) the warning that diabetics may well end up with a lower acceptable lifetime carbohydrate intake level.

By way of review, the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution $5.99 is a very low-carb diet, particularly in the two-week induction phase."Very low-carb" means lots of meat, chicken, fish, eggs, limited cheese, and 2-3 cups daily of salad greens and low-carb veggies like onions, tomatoes, broccoli, and snow peas. After induction phase, you slowly add back carbs on a weekly basis until weight loss stalls, then you cut back on carbs.

As an adult medicine specialist, I have no expertise in pediatrics.I didn't read the two chapters related to children.

The authors present "complimentary medicine"in a favorable light.Unsuspecting readers need to know that much of complementary medicine is based on hearsay and anecdote, not science-based evidence. In that same vein, the two chapters on supplements for diabetes and heart disease recommend a cocktail of supplements that I'm not convinced are needed.I don't know a single endocrinologist or cardiologist prescribing these concoctions. Then again, I could be wrong.

Vernon and Eberstein provide two excellent chapters on exercise.

A month of meal plans and recipes are provided for 20, 40, and 60-gram carbohydrate levels.[The average American is eating 250-300 g of carbs daily.]The recipes look quick and easy, but I didn't prepare or taste any of them.

The 5-hour glucose and insulin tolerance test (GTT, paged 61) that Dr. Atkins reportedly ran on all patients who came to him is rarely done in other medical clinics. This doesn't mean it's wrong, but certainly out of the mainstream. The authors admit that at least a few people will have to count calories - specifically, limit total calories - if the basic program doesn't control diabetes, prediabetes, and the metabolic syndrome.Limiting portion size will speed weight loss, they write.

What we don't know with certainty is, will long-term Atkins aficionados miss out on the health benefits of higher consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains?Much of the scientific literature suggests, "Yes."

What if we compare the long-term outlooks of a diabetic Atkins follower with a poorly controlled diabetic who's 80 pounds overweight and eating a standard American diet? The Atkins follower is quite likely to be healthierand live longer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Twisting of Scripture
I had mixed reactions to this book. The information about diabetes is excellent. But the use of Scripture, taken out of context, to say what it is not saying is sad. Many of the verses he uses, such as the one that asserts that God will heal our diabetes because "by His stripes we are healed," are misused. That particular passage deals with our sin, not our physical healing. As is too often the case, it appears another author has "baptized" his good advice with Scripture taken out of context to market it to the Christian community.

I am a believer, in fact, I am a retired Army chaplain. I believe in prayer. I don't believe in twisting Scripture to market an otherwise fine book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical and Biblical Information
The conbining of the latest medical and Biblical truths was like a glass of (sugar free) cold lemon-aid on a hot day. I was able to pick up a few nice tips and lower my sugar. God is good and gave us Doctors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for the demanding diseased victim!
Diabetes is a disease that destroys if one alters from the narrow path. As the negativity of the road and limited resolutions of the disease is evident. Alternatives are needed to stay positive and hopeful in negative situations. Clearly people have beed totally healed of diabetes and not by medical methods. Dont throw out the medicine, but add the creator to the creative mix. After all, who knows the creation ... like the creator! Douglas Scott Campbell Take hope! It's not over til God says so! ...
