Product Description

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common microvascular complication of diabetes. It remains a major cause of new-onset visual loss in the United States and other industrialized nations. In Diabetic Retinopathy, Elia Duh and a panel of internationally recognized experts comprehensively assess the current state of knowledge regarding the clinical management of DR as well as its underlying mechanisms. The authors outline the current understanding of diabetic retinopathy from the perspective of clinical practice, while reviewing the multi-factorial pathogenesis and pathophysiology of DR from the standpoint of biomedical research. Also included is a discussion of emerging concepts relating to the management and treatment of DR. Informative and highly-practical, Diabetic Retinopathy provides ophthalmologists, diabetologists, endocrinologists, and internists with a highly readable guide not only to understanding diabetic retinopathy, but also to its optimal clinical management.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for taking care of diabetic eyes.
Whether gleaning information from a lecture, article, text, or other source, I have found that two components are crucial (at least for me): the content and the delivery.Encyclopedic content without readability is soporific; readability without real content is just entertainment or, worse, a waste of time.Dr. Walker's book delivers the goods on both counts. As a practicing general ophthalmologist (with a cornea sub-specialty), I found this book exceedingly helpful. In fact, I feel this should book should be model for clinical "how to" texts. The author blends a humorous, satiric, and "down-to-earth" style with current and well-seasoned knowledge on diagnosing and treating diabetic retinopathy. It's more like talking to a very experienced and intelligent mentor over a beer at a national eye meeting.Advice is even offered on how to talk to patients in difficult situations--the stuff I had to learn the hard way.If you're in eye care, and take care of diabetic patients--even if you don't treat them surgically--run, don't walk, and get this book.

Product Description
Diabetic retinopathy (DR), damage of the blood vessels in the retina, is one of the problems that patients may face as a complication of diabetes and is, along with other diabetic eye diseases, the greatest single cause of blindness in developed countries. This publication starts with the description of the mechanisms of development and progression of diabetic macular edema and with the characterization of the early stages of DR. An innovative approach of multimedial mapping methods which enables to differentiate between three DR phenotypes is further described. The standards and novel approaches of laser treatment as well as current surgical options and treatment techniques are discussed. Additional contributions consider the pathology of diffuse macular edema and the implications for surgery, the treatment of DR with triamcinolone and its complications, and the application of somatostatin analogues. A new therapeutic approach is the use of vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors in diabetic macular edema. The volume concludes with articles on the latest concepts of posterior vitreous detachment by pharmacologic vitreolysis and the specific protein kinase C subtype ß inhibitor ruboxistaurin mesylate. To ophthalmologists and diabetes health care professionals interested in diabetic eye disease this book is an essential up-date. ... Read more

Excerpt: Glaucoma is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged, leading to progressive, irreversible loss of vision. It is often, but not always, associated with increased pressure of the fluid in the eye. The nerve damage involves loss of retinal ganglion cells in a characteristic pattern. There are many different sub-types of glaucoma but they can all be considered a type of optic neuropathy. Raised intraocular pressure is a significant risk factor for developing glaucoma (above 22 mmHg or 2.9 kPa). One person may develop nerve damage at a relatively low pressure, while another person may have high eye pressure for years and yet never develop damage. Untreated glaucoma leads to permanent damage of the optic nerve and resultant visual field loss, whi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=74748 ... Read more

Product Description
Abstract: Diabetic retinopathy, a retinal microangiopathy, is the leading cause of blindness for persons aged 20 to 65 years in the United States. Routine screening and early treatment are cost-effective and have been shown to help preserve sight. Primary care physicians play a key role in treatment of systemic factors that lead to poor outcomes and referral to an ophthalmologist or a retinal specialist for screening and local treatment. This article, the first of two on retinal vascular disease, provides a review of nonproliferative and proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The second article, which will appear in an upcoming issue of Postgraduate Medicine, discusses retinal vascular disease in hypertension. Colucciello M. Diabetic retinopathy: control of systemic factors preserves vision. Postgrad Med 2004;116(1):57-64 ... Read more
